Is Brown the New Black? Sherwin-Williamsâ Shocking New Color of the Year
sherwin-williams.com
For years, shades of watered-down brown were the go-to choice for risk-averse homeowners. Need to prep a house for a sale? Slather the walls with beige. Want to give your home a vaguely Tuscan feel? Turn to taupe.
Sure, these bland brownish hues go with anything, but theyâre severely lacking in the personality department.
So we were frankly rather shocked to see that a new twist on brown has taken the lead in todayâs home decor: Sherwin-Williams has named Cavern Clay SW 7701âa warm terra-cotta shade reminiscent of sunsets in the desertâits 2019 Color of the Year.
This earthy brown is miles away from boring beige. Itâs part of todayâs trend of leaning into our love of all things natural.
âCavern Clay is an easy way to bring the warmth of the outdoors in,â says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. âEnvision beaches, canyons and deserts, and sun-washed, late-summer afternoonsâall of this embodied in one color.
âIâve been seeing this color pop up everywhereâfrom fashion to home decor to accessories,â she adds. Indeed, she spotted this aesthetic, which she calls âcowgirl chic,â on the runways of Fall Fashion Week 2018 and instantly thought it should take a starring role in our homes.
Cavern Clay is a bold contrast to recent years of saturated jewel tones. Pantoneâs Color of the Year for 2018 was a vibrant, amethystlike Ultra Violet, and Sherwin-Williamsâ 2018 pick, Oceanside, was a sumptuous mixture of blue and green.
Those rich hues arenât fading into black anytime soon; Wadden predicts weâll continue seeing saturated tones dominate. But she says homeowners will appreciate Cavern Clay because itâs âmore warm and elemental and rooted in the earth.â
Not sure how to integrate this shade into your personal space? Try these ideas on for size.
1. Pair with modern accents
Courtesy Sherwin-Williams
To complement this nouveau-chic shade, pair it with modern accents.
On the backsplash, subway tiles arranged in a herringbone pattern keep this kitchen from looking dated. While the bar stools and lights add their own rustic styleâwith wooden seats and iron framingâtheir lines are entirely contemporary.
âThis colorâs resurgence is made contemporary with clean lines and modern shapes,â says Wadden.
2. Embrace Southwestern textiles
Courtesy Sherwin-Williams
Southwestern style is currently oh so chic, and Cavern Clayâs umber ambiance certainly plays to that in a way that feels entirely contemporary.
Consider going all-out with your desert vibes by picking patterned textiles that invoke a Western feel: Try banded geometric or tessellating Ganado-style patterns in toned-down, complementary shades.
Light-wood furniture keeps the look from going over the top. And donât skip the greenery. Fun, leafy plants perfect the space.
3. Keep the rest neutral
Courtesy of Sherwin-Williams
Cavern Clay may be a brownish hue, but itâs still a saturated tone. Unless youâre careful, pairing it with bold neons or velvety blues could create a riot of color thatâs, well, too riotous.
âCavern Clay ties really well with a natural palette,â Wadden says. âIt goes great with gray, too.â
Soften the shade with white molding and plain textiles. Here, a gray blanket perfectly softens the dramatic look, so the room still feels Southwesternâbut not overwhelmingly so.
It also pairs well with deeps browns such as Sherwin-Williamsâ Moth Wing SW 9174, Wadden says. Feeling bold? Consider a modern update of â70s earth tone combinations by pairing Cavern Clay with a dusty denim blue or even a fresh avocado.

Purple Reign: 7 Pretty Ways to Use This Trendy Color in Your Home Decor
Houzz/iStock
Itâs the color of royalty, a signal of wealth and powerâand interior designâs hottest color in 2018.
Sure, purple might inspire you to hum a few tunes from (or mourn once more) that musical genius from Minneapolis. But itâs also a fresh shade with a strong personality and lots of versatility, says Olivia Rassow, style editor at Birch Lane, an online retailer of furniture and home decor.
And homeowners are catching on.
âJewel-inspired tones have been trending in the marketplace,â says Misty Yeomans, senior color marketing manager at PPG paints. âThese colors, including the purple hues, evoke feelings of elegance and grandeur, which appeal to consumers.â
But too much of this grape hue could backfire in your home, much like a Barney-themed birthday party run amok. Instead, ease into the trend with some smart advice from the pros. Here are seven ways to introduce this yearâs hottest color into your home decor.
1. Paint a purple accent wall
Photo by kmh design inc. âPurple on its own may intimidate those who live in mostly neutral spaces, so think about using this shade on a single wall or the ceiling,â suggests Sasha Bikoff, an interior designer in New York City.
Your room will seem brighter and more welcoming with just a pop of this tone, she adds.
And when selecting a shade of purple, think in terms of rich tonesâbolder, deeper shades of violet create an electric feeling on an accent wall, particularly when paired with complementary colors such as clean, grassy greens, Yeomans notes.
Her picks? Glidden Regal Purple or the more modern Purple Surf, especially in a dining room with warm wood furniture or flooring.
2. Lay down a purple rug
Those who are color-shy can introduce purple in subtle ways with wall art or rugs.
âA light purple rug adds vibrancy and personality,â Bikoff says, âbut because itâs not at eye level, the room doesnât feel aggressive or too bright.â
Or move into the hue slowly with a single item.
âA purple statement piece like a sofa, headboard, or armchair that uses rich texturesâsuch as velvet and silkâ brings excitement to the space,â she adds.
3. Try purple in a powder room
Photo by Slotegraaf Construction Drew Henry of Design Dudes saves purple for a half-bath.
âThese spaces are guest-centric and made to be impactful, so itâs the ideal spot to go a little crazy and showcase the latest trends,â he explains.
Paul Miller of MakeNest Interiors agrees: âViolet towels in a white bathroom are warm and luxurious,â he states.
4. Pair purple with unexpected colors
Photo by Charlotte Crosland Interiors Purple doesnât always have to be paired with its opposite on the color wheel. You can achieve harmony in your decor with some surprising combos.
âWe love to add purple to a mix of blues and indigos for an unexpected twist on a classic palette,â Rassow says.
Case in point: The 2018 Pantone pick marries nicely with Oceanside, a deep teal that was named the Sherwin-Williams color of the year, Henry notes.
âI would also pair purple shades with gray and simple whites, though yellow would be a great color to accent withâjust use it sparingly,â he adds.
And if purple is in your wallpaper pattern, match it with muted silver, pale pink, or even bright red, Bikoff says.
5. Use purple in your accessories
Photo by Justine Sterling Design If you fear making a commitment to an eclectic hue, you can always dip your toe in the purple pool with accent piecesâthink lamps, a bright throw, or vibrant pillows.
âGetting a few pillows for your couch or bed is a good way to test the trend and frees you up to switch them out next year at low cost,â notes Henry.
Flowers and houseplants are other easy ways to add a bit of purple.
âA potted purple queen adds beautiful color in a kitchen window or a softly toned guest room,â Miller says.
Or look to kitchen accessories in this shade, including a Dutch oven, blender, or dish towels.
6. Give purple to the kids
Photo by Shana Dee Nursery Decor Purple is young and vibrantâand therefore the perfect pick for a babyâs nursery (try soothing lavender) or a tweenâs bedroom (electric magenta).
âViolet shades invoke creativity and imagination, and make for great color choices in a kidâs playroom,â Yeomans adds.
To unite the space, pick bedding and window treatments that have a touch of purple in them.
âMuted purples are neutral enough to work in many spaces,â Yeomans says. âAnd a grayish purple, like Gliddenâs Violet Verbena, has a chameleonlike presence that appears polished yet playful in childrenâs spaces.â
7. Steer clear of clichés
As with any color trend, itâs important not to make tired mistakes or mix in wild shades that arenât cohesive. One sin from the past that designers want you to avoid: adding pops of purpleâno matter the shadeâinto an all-white room.
âThis was popular 10 years ago, but it should be long gone by now as itâs just plain tacky,â laments Bikoff.
And refrain from using multiple shades of purple or pink together, Henry warns.
âThis look can very easily begin to clash,â he notes.
Finally, make sure to choose your shade of purple carefully.
âPurple [can] quickly look juvenile,â Miller cautions. âSo keep the color sophisticated with a version that has red or bluish undertones.â

Color and Quality at a Discount
On your next flip or rehab project, be confident in your color selections! Think Realty Supplier, Sherwin-Williams, has been committed to supporting homeowners and professionals with exceptional products and color expertise for more than 150 years. The company provides customers with resources to confidently choose colors, like their annual Colormix Forecast and for the past ten years, their Color of the Year. Â
The 2020 Color of the year is Naval, a bold navy blue that has quickly become a ânew neutralâ according to Sue Wadden, Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams. âThe use of color in interior design is changingâitâs not just about what a space looks like anymore, but the feelings a space can evoke.âÂ
Wadden explained that Sherwin-Williams paints have smooth finishes and a more durable surface through an easy application process. Although that typically means a higher investment up front, property owners will save money down the road because they will avoid having to buy more coatings for repaints in the long run.Â
In its long company history, the Sherwin-Williams brand has become synonymous with timelessness. Â
âSherwin-Williams has perfected paint qualities such as washability, paintâandâprimerâinâone solutions, and technologies that help reduce odors and moisture to provide maximum durability for our customers. These types of features can help make the painting process easier for professionals, because we know quality paint starts with quality raw materials,â Wadden said.Â
How to Pick the Right Color?Â
With hundreds of choices, picking the right colors can be overwhelming. When it comes to choosing paint colors, you want to create a space in which homeowners can envision themselves living and that helps them feel at home. For the interior of a home, warm, neutral paint colors make a space feel more inviting while appealing to several different design styles. Â
Wadden suggests Accessible Beige, a neutral choice with a gray undertone that works great with differing wood tones and open floor plans. Mindful Gray is a timeless warm, greenish gray that also suits a variety of spaces.Â
âWhen choosing a color for your property, I always recommend playing with color online with tools like our ColorSnap Visualizer, which can help test a color in the space before committing. We recently added an augmented reality feature to virtually paint the walls in a space as well,â Wadden said.Â
When choosing exterior color palettes, Wadden encourages property owners to keep in mind the architectural style of the home. Â
âYou can start by looking at the neighborhood to find inspiration and determine the direction of your color palette. Homeowners should consider their surroundings, too. If you have a beautiful backdrop of trees, consider colors that complement nature, such as navy or even black. If you live in a desert climate, dusty beiges and terra cottas may be a better choice for your environment,â she said. Â
Painting your front door is one of the easiest and quickest ways to boost your curb appeal since this project does not take a lot of planning or preparation. If you want your front door to stand out, consider Oceanside or Begonia. For a more classic and elegant look, try Color of the Year Naval, or a true black, like Tricorn Black.Â
 Color TrendsÂ
Homeowners and professionals are switching cool grays and whites for warmer neutrals and deep jewel tones that bring character and life into a space. Specifically, bold blues and greens are becoming more popular. Â
âThey are colors that come from nature, so they feel familiar and help anchor us as life pulls us in so many directions,â Wadden said. âIn addition, the Play palette from Sherwin-Williams 2020 Colormix Forecast is rooted in a fresh white with pops of pink like Eros Pink, accented with rich blues and golds like Oceanside and Auric. Using any one of these hues can add a sense of fun and brightness to your home, perfect for summer.âÂ
Think Realty featured the Play palette (pictured here) in the March issue earlier this year. Â
For exceptional coverage and uniform finish, property owners can check out the new Emerald Designer Edition Interior Latex paint. Â
âProfessionals can choose from an expansive selection of 200 new hues divided into five designer color collections. Available in flat, satin and gloss sheens, Emerald Designer Edition is a great, high-performing choice with an exceptional finish,â Wadden said. Â
More Than PaintÂ
Sherwin-Williams offers more than just materials for walls. The company also offers durable flooring options like Vinyl Plank, which particularly suitable for investment properties. Vinyl plank has quickly gained popularity and has become a mainstay in the flooring industry, replacing carpet in many homes.Â
Vinyl plank has come a long way since appearing in 1933. Todayâs vinyl plank options are much higher quality than even what was available five years ago. Modern vinyl plank stands up to heavier traffic volumes and is easier to maintain than its predecessors. Additionally, water-resistant finishes are becoming more sophisticated, with many manufacturers now selling 100 percent waterproof vinyl plank.Â
One of the biggest benefits of vinyl plank is its longevity â the average life of vinyl plank is 10 or more years. Â
âThis enables a better return on investment for property owners than many other flooring options and is why around half of the top real estate investment trusts in the country are installing vinyl plank at properties in varying scales. For homes that are frequently replacing carpet during resident turnover, vinyl plank is a good option,â said Justin Brazie, director of marketing-applicators and decorative products at Sherwin-Williams.Â
Another significant benefit of vinyl plank is the variety of colors, finishes and textures, with many high-end styles offering the look and feel of stone, wood and ceramic tile. Currently, gray is the color of choice for many, with natural, wood-colored options not far behind. This product variety helps to provide an even better investment for property owners as occupants look for stylish, trendy options that also help to justify higher selling prices. Â
Think Realty members can save up to 50 percent off paint and receive wholesale pricing on flooring at Sherwin-Williams stores nationwide. Â

Home Renovation Ideas
Hello, everyone! Itâs wonderful to have you on Home Bunch today and I am truly excited to present the impeccable work of this talented builder on the blog. Donatelli Builders specialize in building upscale custom homes and performing luxury renovations in the Chicago suburbs area and itâs an honor to have them here for the first time. Please, keep reading to know more details about this recent home renovation:
âHaving spent years in the home they built in 2002, our clients John + Lisa were ready to bolster the overall function and design to better suit their lifestyle. Thoughtfully crafted and curated with the help of local Architect and interior design team Z+O architecture + interiors, the spaces now flow together while still maintaining room definition. The first floor is reimagined and embodies everything the homeowners intended; welcoming, bright, purposeful and a place to gather with family and friends.
No details were left unturned from floor to ceiling. The whole house electrical system has been enhanced, streamlined and uncluttered. Counter top pop up receptacles are installed to reduce unsightly wall outlets, shelf lighting has been added to create ambience and all the controls are programed together to be operated in a convenient phone app. The kitchen windows have been lengthened down to the counter tops to fill the space with light and brightness; easily transformed with automated Lutron window shades fully compatible with the lighting control system. Trim details tie together seamlessly to carry one room into the next in perfect choreographed form and function.
The spaces now have a finish and flow; retiring dated designs and technologies for a thoughtfully composed layout that best suits the way the homeowners live and entertain in their home.â

 Home Renovation Ideas
As you walk through the front door, centered in the home is the Kitchen. The overall layout now makes sense with distinct work zones and a place for family and friends to gather. Box beams were added to break up the vast ceiling and give definition to each area in the Kitchen, and carefully coordinated lighting align within the pattern of the box beams. The windows were replaced, enlarged and specified in black to create a focal point and add a connection to the beautiful back yard. The knee wall under the window wall was removed so the new windows sit directly on the countertops. Finishes were kept neutral, incorporating elements of interest with the blue cabinets, walnut shelves, brass cabinet hardware and light fixtures. No details were overlooked including adjusting cabinet layouts to allow for perfect tile back splash layouts and never placing switches or outlets within those tiled spaces for the most pleasing look possible. Alignment of shelving and range hood with grout joints and pop-up counter top outlets with wireless charging and USB ports make this exceptionally user friendly with a timeless contemporary look.

1. Pair with modern accents Courtesy Sherwin-Williams
2. Embrace Southwestern textiles Courtesy Sherwin-Williams
3. Keep the rest neutral Courtesy of Sherwin-Williams

Feel the spring colors
Choose the right color
With the coming of spring, the atmosphere changes, the almond trees finish blossoming, and flowers illuminate the paths of nature and the courtyards of the houses. It is also a perfect time to refresh our homes & and to bring shades into the rooms.
What's the quickest way? Paint...
A new shade will quickly change the feeling in every room. The right color for the house can make us feel safe and calm, help us sell or rent the property, upgrade space with minimal expense and effort and more.
But how do you choose the right color from the huge and colorful selection? What we see in the pictures and ads right now is accurate for our home or office? And what do you do when the trend changes (and it changes, because that's the nature of a trend)? As a color company, BG Paint from BG Bond offers a glimpse behind the colorful scenes in the field.
First, you will need to know how international color companies determine global trends. The leading companies in the field employ forecasters and trendologists (believe us â it is a real profession) to conduct experiential journeys around the world in search of emerging trends in design, culture, technology, leisure, nature, and so on. The trendologists migrate in diverse destinations, track different people, and try to absorb the future trends and formulate them into a concrete forecast - a real shelf product. In our case a color or several colors will reflect what we want or need in life.
So what is the colorful outlook of international companies?
Pantone - the Oracle of the paint companies - announced at the end of the year that 18-3838 Ultra Violet is the leading color for the coming year, 2018. This deep, dramatic and thought-provoking purple reflects the mysteries of the universe, expressing originality, resourcefulness and visionary and futuristic thinking. According to one of Fenton's arguments, deep purple is a mystical and even meditative color
In contrast to Panton, you will not find a hint of purple in the announcement of the color of the year by the American color company Benjamin Moore. Their 2018 palette features warm colors like the Caliente AF-290 which is a kind of deep wine Bordeaux. The declaration, which was made no less than at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, explained that the color is strong, radiant and full of energy. Alongside it are a 23-tone inspiration palette, combining a wide range of reds and pinks (including versions of the necessary millennial pink), and complementary shades of neutral, gray, brown and heretic lightings.
Some color companies abandoned the sweetness and softness, and this year they announced a declaration full of daring and drama. Glidden, the largest DIY retailer in the United States, has announced Deep Onyx black and dark as the color of its 2018 year. The reason is that it is quite fed up with the ticking ticks that characterized the past year and it's time to make place for neutral and authentic. Just like the little black dress, it is a classic color that will blend well with a variety of styles and colors, especially when it comes to a home in a modern and contemporary style. By the way, they recommend painting a single wall power, for example the wall behind the double bed or wall in the living room or in the dining area, rather than the whole house.
Dulux continues the soft, soft colors of the warm, light browns and announces Heart Wood as the color of its 2018 year. The company explained at the end of an in-depth study they concluded that color is leading to many homes around the world. Heart Wood is a light brown color combined with deep pink and warm, creating a relaxed, warm and warm atmosphere that blends with a range of colors, as they offer a more neutral rose blossom, blossom tree, neutral burr and also more dominant colors that complement the selected shade like blue, Very dark. Dulux also offers unusual applications for their color, such as painting only 3/4 of the wall, painting on a wall with a Heart Wood rectangle, and the rest in a neutral color, painting the ceiling further down the wall, and more.
Like most counterparts, Dulux does not place all the chips on just one color and offers another palette, or, more precisely, world concepts around colors. Under the inspirational names kinship, essential, escapade, and reflect, you can find a variety of suggestions for submission to similar and complementary color collections, each of which has a whole visual content. There are a range of colors, almost every style and taste, from colorful to almost imperceptible colors to walls and brightly colored items.
Sherwin-Williams also offers some visual content worlds and above all has announced that its color of the year is Oceanside SW 6496, a combination of rich blue and deep green that together create a look of the turquoise family. This decision stems from the desire for wandering and traveling around the world and it is a relaxing and universal color that is relevant in many cultures, from the Far East through the Mediterranean basin and exotic destinations to Europe and the United States.
At the end of the review of the global color map, the question is whether there is one color suitable for a farmer from Texas, a software engineer in New Delhi and a kindergarten teacher from France who is about to design her home. Is it right to change colors at home regularly according to published forecasts? The answer, of course, is NO for both questions.
Color is primarily a personal matter. It is possible and fun to catch up with world trends, but everyone has to dive in and find out what makes or turns him or her off and choose accordingly.

Hot New Painting Trends in 2018
One of the toughest parts of painting is just choosing the paint color! Whether your looking to paint your house or your office, choosing the right paint color can be difficult.
Luckily there is some resource out there that can give you an idea of whatâs hot and whatâs not in 2018. House Beautiful recently looked at over 19 color trends that are making a statement this year. Here are a few of our favourites:
Sage
This lake house bathroom, designed by Bill Ingram, features the new âitâ color, according to Pinterest. Why is it so popular? The greyish green hue is soft and muted, but not boring.
Get this paint color:Â Benjamin Moore Weekend Getaway 473
Marigold
Weâre obsessed with this mustard yellow color â and Etsy predicts itâll be huge this year too. It has a retro â70s vibe that infuses any space with happiness, as evident by the kitchen in this Vero Beach, Florida, home by designer Tom Scheerer.
Get this paint color:Â Benjamin Moore Yellow Marigold 2155-30
Caliente
âStrong, radiant, and full of energy, Caliente AF-290 is total confidence. It is pleasing, passionate and makes people feel special, like âred carpet treatment,'â said Ellen OâNeill, Benjamin Moore Director of Strategic Design Intelligence.
Get this paint color:Â Benjamin Moore Caliente AF-290
Oceanside
âPeople today have a growing sense of adventure, and itâs making its way into even the coziest corners of our homes,â says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. âOceanside is the color of wanderlust right in our own homes.â
Get this paint color:Â Sherwin-Williamsâ Oceanside SW 6496
Dark Plum
Another color that proves bold is back is this dramatic purple, according to designer Francesco Bilotto. âYouâll see this tone showcased everywhere from kitchen cabinets to foyers,â he says. Designer Pat Healing opted to use this shade to create a statement on this New York dining room door.
Get this paint color:Â Benjamin Moore Autumn Purple 2073-20
As you can see, big bright colours are the in thing for 2018. But these statement colours might not be for everyone. Thatâs why Consumer Reports also took a look at the hottest colours and they came up with a bit more tame but beautiful colours that can restore a dull looking home or office:
Behr: In the Moment T18-15

Clark+Kensington: River Rapids 29B-3
PHOTO: HGTV & CONSUMER REPORT
Described as: âA rich golden yellow that brings rays of sunshine that radiate warmth and comfort to liven up any space,â says Ashley Banbury, senior designer for HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams. Why itâs hot: Inspired by the vivid colors of the tropics, itâs an optimistic, energetic hue, she says. Where to use it: Spanning all design styles, this yellow can be used to accent a door (as it does in the above photo) or to add a pop of color to a bookshelf. Banbury adds that this hue can freshen up an accent wall in the living or dining area and provides a great backdrop for bold art and green plants. Recommended sheen: Eggshell or satin are best for walls in high-traffic areas. Consider flat if youâre looking to hide imperfections on your walls. High-gloss or semi-gloss are ideal for doors and accent furniture. Where to buy: Loweâs
Glidden: Deep Onyx 00NN 07/000

2018 Is a great year for paints, there are always new innovations coming out and this year is no different. Hopefully these beautiful colours inspire you to refresh that old room!

Finally, a Color of the Year That Dares to Dream
Sherwin Williams
Paint company Sherwin-Williams has just announced its 2018 Color of the Year, and as far as house paint goes, itâs quite breathtaking: Oceanside SW 6496, an intense shade of blue-green that, according to the companyâs color experts, encapsulates our growing sense of adventureâin how we decorate our homes and otherwise!
âPeople today have a growing sense of adventure, and it is making its way into even the coziest corners of our homes,â says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. âWe are craving things that remind us of bright folklore, like mermaids and expeditions across continents. Oceanside is the color of wanderlust right in our own homes.â
We have to say, itâs a nice change from all the âsafeâ colors (like those 50 shades of white) which typically dominate peopleâs homes. And interior designers roundly applaud this new paint color pick.
Oceanside, Color of the Year
Sherwin-Williams
âShades of deep teal have definitely been trending in the home space for several years,â says Donna Garlough, style director at Wayfair.com. âThis shade is bolder and brighter than what weâve been seeing to date, but for homeowners who love drama and want a color with a âwowâ factor, this is definitely a great option.â
Some say the shade signals a return to opulence.
âThere are buildings that are hundreds of years old which have examples of rich, dramatic color palettes like [Oceanside]âballrooms, theaters, opera houses,â points out Landy Gardner of Landy Gardner Interiors. âThose deep and vibrant colors suggested opulence, which is coming back in todayâs design.â
How to infuse your home with Oceanside
Still, Oceansideâs intensity could easily overtake your home, which is why many designers urge homeowners to add only a splash.
âI would use this color in small spaces to make a bold and impactful punchâthink powder room, entryway, or a small study,â says Drew Henry, founder of Design Dudes.
âSince this is a darker color, make sure to lighten it up with bright accents,â he adds. âIâd add trim and crown molding in crisp whites, light marble tile, or white furniture and pillows. Adding this trendy color in small spaces makes your home feel relevant and also keeps it timeless when paired with crisp whites and grays in the rest of the interior.â
Yet some designers think a âless is moreâ approach is just too timid for a color like this. Laura Michaels believes itâs best to go all out.
âI used this color in a home office and used it on the walls, seagrass carpet, velvet sofa, and also on the custom lacquered wall unit,â says Michaels. âIt was a small room, and it gave it a big feel because everything was the same color. The room would have been fairly uninteresting if we didnât make such a big color choice, and it remained interesting by the use of textural versus color changes.â
See her pic below and decide for yourself!
A room that went overboard on Oceanside
@lauramichaels_design
As for what to pair it with, designer Bobby Berk suggests, âOceansideâs rich saturation pairs well with other deep-toned leathers and woods in a den, office, bedroom, or even living room. Its jewel-like tint allows for combinations of marigold, saffron, and Kelly green, and is versatile in masculine or feminine schemes, and everywhere in between! I could see this color on kitchen cabinets in a matte or high gloss, or in a powder room or entry.â
One caveat: âI would stay clear of the color in large, expansive spaces that have tall ceilings,â says Angela Harris at TRIO environments. âIt is highlighted better in a more compressed environment.â
âI donât know that it works well for an open floor plan, where several rooms should be treated the same way,â Gardner adds. âAnd I would not suggest this color in a bedroomâit is too strong. However, I recently painted a dining room a similar color and it is breathtaking. Itâs best in a confined space, and a place that is âspecial.'â

5 Color of the Year Paint Trends for 2018
Developed as a way to forecast trends in home decor and fashion, Pantone has declared a new color of the year since 2000. It seems only natural that popular paint brands like Glidden and Dutch Boy are now following suit and making their own âColor of the Yearâ selections. Although this year you wonât find any of the choices quite as loud or vibrant as Pantoneâs 2018 Color of the Year Ultra Violet. Today weâll explore the 2018 color of the year paint trends from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Glidden, Dutch Boy, and Behr.
5 Color of the Year Paint Trends for 2018
Benjamin Moore â Caliente
First up, is this spicy hue from Benjamin Moore aptly named Caliente. The strong color makes a memorable statement no matter the room. Use it to create a pop of color in an otherwise neutral room or go bold and feature the paint color in a space like the entry way below.

Glidden â Deep Onyx
Dark charcoal walls arenât a new trend but weâre not surprised Glidden chose Deep Onyx as their paint color of the year. This hue sticks around because of its innate ability to make a statement while also remaining neutral. Deep Onyx is an especially gorgeous option for a small space like a powder room or office.

Dutch Boy â Sandstone Tint
Sandstone Tint from Dutch Boy proves there doesnât have to be anything boring about beige. This paint color creates a clean, modern back drop to display all of the other elements in the room. Focus on bringing other natural fibers and textures into the space to enhance the effect.
