910: The Final Sacrifice

I grew up in Calgary, which means that the riff about Edmonton being kind of like hell but less so is at least six times funnier than it would be otherwise. My sister did her IT degree at the same school (the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) as the people in this movie were taking their film classes. I’ve probably been to places where they shot scenes and didn’t know it… all of which makes The Final Sacrifice particularly dear to my heart, even by MSTie standards.

Seven years ago, young Troy’s father was chased down and murdered by armed luchadors in the woods somewhere. Now, grown into a man of at least twelve, Troy is determined to find the killers. In an attic he discovers a mysterious map and a bunch of information about the ‘Ziox’, but before he can puzzle it out the luchadors attack! Troy escapes by climbing into a truck driven by Canada’s second-greatest hero (after Wolverine), the one, the only Zap Rowsdower. Together, the two of them set out to conquer Zap Rowsdower’s car trouble and uncover the secret of the Ziox, a lost civilization that once ruled the land of Fish Creek Provincial Park!

First, some Canadiana. The Lemon Mine is a legendary lost gold deposit supposedly found by prospector John Lemon. Also, Maple Syrup Rustling is a thing that goes on in Canada. Over the winter of 2011-2012, nearly three thousand tonnes of it were stolen from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, one barrel at a time. Canadians regard this in the same way as other countries might think of big art or bank heists, with the perpetrators becoming folk-culture heroes. Also also, Brain Guy was wrong. The worst thing ever to come out of Canada is, hands down, our geese, which attack livestock, destroy aircraft, and don’t even taste good. They are the worst of all birds and we apologize.

Second, some racism. According to the movie, the Ziox were a lost civilization who lived in Southern Alberta eleventy thousand years ago, “way before the Indians” and built cities of gold in the middle of the prairie. Since Sartoris and Zap Rowsdower, among others, are descendants of these people it appears they were supposed to be white. Because there’s no way anybody who wasn’t white could have built huge cities full of golden pyramids, right? It’s not like there were entire cultures in the Americas who were known for exactly that!

Those peoples didn’t live in southern Alberta, though, for the excellent reason that there’s nothing here. This area is miles upon miles of rolling grassland, from the foot of the mountains all the way to Manitoba, with not much in it but buffalo and buffalo by-products. There’s some sandstone you can build quaint town halls with, but not pyramids that will last thousands of years. The wildlife aren’t suitable for domestication. There’s no meaningful amount of gold. There weren’t even very many trees until Europeans started planting them as windbreaks. For as long as there’s an archaeological record, the indigenous peoples around here have been nomadic hunters. Permanent settlements couldn’t get started until the railway arrived to bring in supplies.

On to the movie. When you want to tell a big story but have only a little budget, one popular way to do it is by having most of your adventure happen in the middle of nowhere so you can save your money to make a big impression in only a few key scenes. Take, for example, The Princess Bride, which is mostly just a few people in the wilderness but put enough into the palace sequences to make us believe we were in a Renaissance-era world. The Final Sacrifice is a stellar example of a film that’s too damn cheap to even get away with that. They wanted demonic idols and spectacular caverns and an ancient city rising from the earth but all they got is a bunch of toothpick models and papier-mache, almost as pathetic as the dinosaur puppets in Future War.

The nail in the coffin is that The Final Sacrifice can’t even do wilderness very well. The outdoor scenes are in very open scrub, which are rather desolate but don't give the impression of somewhere miles from civilization. It looks, like I already observed, a lot like Fish Creek Park, which is about a twenty-minute walk from where I grew up and sees a steady stream of picnickers and brownie troops all summer. Any given shot in The Final Sacrifice looks like if you moved the camera three inches to one side you’d see a bunch of little kids making s’mores.

I’m pretty sure the writers originally had something much grander in mind, and had to tone it down a lot to get it to the screen with the money they had – because when you think about it, it’s obvious that The Final Sacrifice is a story about the lost continent of Atlantis. You’ve got an ancient advanced civilization that was punished for its hubris and blasphemy by sinking, and which promises untold power and wealth to whoever can find its remains. That’s a tale that ought to span continents, with adventurous archaeologists and deserted isles and plane crashes and such things… but all anybody had was a small town and some back woods a few hours’ drive out of Calgary, so they had to make do. The result feels like a story trying to be bigger than it is, as if the events in the movie only think they ought to have world-shaking implications but actually don’t matter to anyone.

Adding to the impression that there’s something missing from this movie, the story depends an awful lot on some very odd coincidences. I can buy that Troy lives only a couple hours’ drive from the site of the Ziox city – that’s where his father lived and worked, and since Troy’s aunt didn’t know about the cultists there was no reason for her to move. But then the truck he climbs into just happens to belong to a former member of the cult? Zap Rowsdower is supposed to be an alcoholic drifter who just wants to get away and forget, so why the heck is he still in the area? Canada is big. Go to Halifax. Go to Resolute Bay. Hell, leave the country. Why stick around within a few miles of the evil cult that threw you out?

Then there’s Pipper. He’s been hiding from the cult for years, he says, but he’s doing it in a cabin about ten meters (that's thirty-five feet for the Americans in the audience) from the site of the idol! That might make sense if he were guarding it, but he doesn’t know it’s nearby and professes to believe it’s just a legend. So what is he doing there? Movie audiences can handle magic and aliens and all kinds of other ridiculous things, but too many coincidences will kill suspension of disbelief in a way the overtly fantastical never can.

When you want to tell a big story in your movie, it’s also helpful if the audience knows what the characters want and what will happen if they fail. On the first count, I guess The Final Sacrifice does okay. We do know that Troy wants to find out why his father died and what’s up with all this stuff he left behind, and Zap Rowsdower just wants to get away from this distasteful part of his past but is sucked back into it by Troy whether he likes it or not. On what will happen if they fail, however, the film is much less clear. Sartoris talks about raising an army of invincible warriors and conquering the world, but it’s not clear how making a sacrifice to the idol in the woods will bring that about. Does Sartoris believe the city will arise full of undead soldiers or something? The only version of the associated legends we get comes from Pipper, who says nothing about any such thing. We’re obviously meant to believe that at least some of the population escaped the sinking, since they had to go give rise to descendants like Zap Rowsdower and the luchadors.

The ending is clearly supposed to be ironic, as it is Sartoris’ death that satisfies the idol and raises the city from the ground. This would have been more effective if Sartoris himself had lived long enough to appreciate the irony, but that much works well enough. The rest of the events at the end of the film just leave way too many questions. What happened to all the luchadors? They pull off their masks and walk into the light and out of the movie. Why did Zap Rowsdower’s tattoo disappear? Does Sartoris actually have some kind of magical powers, since he seems able to telepathically contact Zap Roswdower in his sleep? Did the city actually blast off into space, possibly taking the luchadors with it? Because there are definitely shots that make it look like that’s happening. What’s going on there?

Honestly, that’s not a bad explanation. Throwing some Erich Von Daniken, Pumaman or Hangar 18 bullshit into this would actually have made way more sense. Wow, is that ever sad.

It’s easy to be really hard on The Final Sacrifice because it is so very cheap, but on the other hand it was literally made by first-year students at a polytechnic not known for producing filmmakers. When you think of it that way, it actually looks surprisingly like a real movie… but still not enough that it should ever have been released into the wild. The fact that Tjardus Greidanus’ imagination was so much bigger than his budget makes it seem like he had some honest potential. He’s still making both narrative and documentary films, and I’m kind of interested to see some of them.

December 20, 2020 - Burnaby, BC

Normally around this time I would be in Newfoundland with my parents and family doing all sorts of stuff. However this being 2020 that isn’t the case. Instead of staying in the basement of my parents house in Bay Roberts both me and my girlfriend have spent the weekend at the Hilton that is only a 15 minute walk from the please we live in.

A staycation mainly for my girlfriend but in some ways for me too. I know how much my girlfriend hates where we live and I can’t blame her I have carried a deep seeded dislike for where I have lived for some time too but I have always sort of buried it in my subconscious because I felt like this was only temporary or it was just something I could deal with for now even though every year the house was just seemingly getting in worse and worse condition, never getting better. However as something int he house would seemingly get worse that would always bring up my dislike for the house. Not counting one of my room mates whom has lived there before even my current landlord and seemingly thinks it is his house. Both me and my girlfriend share a deep seeding hatred for the man child which we know is returned from him. With that said I am not wasting thoughts and words on that piece of shit.

We are checking out in 4 hours and I can’t help but be depressed, we were only stayed here for 3 nights but I can’t help but already miss what it feels like to actually live somewhere decent.

A clean floor that isn’t sinking, comfortable bed, room to move around, furniture one could lay or lounge on that wasn’t your bed, no mould, no room mates and a clean and functional bathroom all to ourselves. It is probably my white male privilege but I remember a time where I had all of these things and I miss them dearly. With that said I know I have it ok where so many others either don't even have a warm and soft place to sleep in, even less room and so on. I know I am just being a whiny white male brat but it is what it is I am over privileged.

This makes me miss living in my bachelor apartment even more than ever. Its funny yet irritating at the same time; I moved out of that apartment apartment around 2012 because the rent was just way too high for me to afford. Mind you I was making less than half the amount I am making now. I wish I had the job I have now back then because even if they jumped the rent up 20 bucks every year it would still be less than the rent I pay right now. My girlfriend would be able to have baths anytime she wants, we would have privacy, we may not have quite as much room but enough room and we may have to pay through the nose for internet and laundry (though I would push to wash and dry our clothes inside our apartment versus paying 2.50 per shot in their machines) but we would at least have our privacy and feel we are living in a decent place.

While I miss being with my parents the most this time of the year being able to live in a decent place is also something I miss about being in Newfoundland right now as well, something I always take for granted right up until I leave back for Vancouver. Having my own basement/place where I can just lay on on the couch and watch movies, play video games, hang with friends and family. Instead I stay in place where there is one room with just enough room to walk in and out of where we can sleep and when not that watch TV and let the laundry dry, then there is the other room where either of us can sleep but also work on tasks or just work in general. We share a third of the fridge with two other people with barely enough room for ourselves, even buying a mini fridge is not enough for us. We have to be mindful of when we are using the kitchen and bathroom because god forbid we are using it while jack off man child wants to use it because he will do nothing but pout and give stink eyes when we are using it. Fuck I hate that bastard.

I know I have said it before but these exemplifies the reasons as to why I need to move out of this city sooner rather than later, unless rent suddenly nose dives into reasonable levels again which is extremely doubtful there is no scenario I can see where I can afford to live here and live in a place of privacy and higher luxury than the mould dish we live in unless there were two incomes paying for it. Only way I could really live here on my own and with a semblance of luxury and privacy at this point is if I was paid 30 bucks an hour and that is not happening anytime soon. It shouldn’t have to be like this, nearly anywhere else outside of BC, Toronto and Halifax my income is a living wage for me to be able to afford live and still have a comfortable life. Here nearly impossible, one of my friends keeps telling me to move out and just deal with he high rent but I don't think she understands, I can’t blame her. I know she sort of understands but she is willing to pay more even if it is outrageous just to have privacy and luxury while me I have always been more concerned with he long game at least from the financial side of things.

I have talked about all of this way too much and I am sick of talking about it as well but at the end of the day it is nearly all I think about. 2021 has to be about figuring out how to get out of Vancouver. Where I thought I could go anywhere it is becoming abundantly clear that I only really have one option in a place to go and that is Newfoundland though I would like to go to Alberta, Edmonton in particular.

Can’t help but feel I am taking so much for granted and not being thankful for what I do have. At least I have a roof over my head I can afford, at least I have a well paying job in a work place that is not toxic, I live in a country with stable healthcare in a province that isn’t full of right wing nuts, I have a girlfriend who loves me who I know cares for me. All things considered even though I could not travel this year or see my family this year this year wasn’t all that bad.

2020 for the most part has just been a different challenge for me but filled with many challenges. The first being kept in Newfoundland for an extra week which looking back now was a blessing in disguise given that I won’t be able to see my parents at all this year.

The next challenge was dealing with Vancouver’s “snowmageddon” which is a joke because the snow the city got would be nothing compared to other parts of Canada but since it is Vancouver and it’s inability and refusal to deal with it it is a big problem to deal with.

What followed that was the obvious pandemic where within the first two weeks of March we went form living life as though everything was normal even though we knew a pandemic was looming outside our boarders to full on lock down for a month and a half where it was looked down upon to leave your house even with a mask on.

My travel plans were Ottawa, Portland, Fort McMurray, Australia, Quebec City and of course Newfoundland but instead it became none of it. Any and all money spent was on records and knick knacks inside the house as we just decided to stay at home most if not all of the time.

During this time my drinking has gone up to levels that I feel are getting out of control nd my mental health has taken a hit because the one thing that relieves my mental health issues is something I can do. I feel like I haven’t been able to do much to relieve myself of my stress. But it is what it is.

2021 remains a cloud to me, I know there is a vaccine but I doubt any travel will occur during this time or anything really. With that said the main goal of 2021 is simply to find a way out of Vancouver and back to Newfoundland, it is as simple as that. 2021 will have its own challenges but ones I have faced before. If anything it will provide me with a true test to see if the new mental health supports I built in my subconscious really do work or if they don’t.

COVID has been a challenge for all of us and have no right to complain but this is my blog and I will complain here all I can do right now is just be thankful of what I have and just try to make the most of it. Just like being in this hotel, I only have 3 more hours left in it before we have to go back to the shit hole. May as well make the most of it.

Here's How Scammers Tried to Dupe Trend Micro Customers

Unlucky Trend Micro customers ensnared in the insider hack at the antivirus company are being bombarded with fake tech support calls seeking access to their computers. "The first call seemed very legitimate to me," one customer named Rona told PCMag. "I almost fell for it." Rona, who requested her last name be withheld, was among the estimated 68,000 Trend Micro users who had their names, email addresses, phone numbers, and customer support ticket numbers exposed in the breach. Since August, Trend Micro has been investigating why customers were receiving fake tech support calls and sourced it back to a rogue employee who was selling customer information to an unknown third party.

How the Scam Works

Rona, who is based in Alberta, Canada, said she tried to warn Trend Micro about the potential hack in early October when she received a mysterious call on her cell phone from the scammers. The man, who had an "Indian or Pakistani accent," said he was contacting her on behalf of Trend Micro to report a problem with the company's antivirus software, which she's used for the past decade. The mysterious man knew Rona's name, as well as how she had recently called Trend Micro's help line to install the company's antivirus software on her mother's computer. He then asked Rona to open an email he had sent, which outlined the steps she needed to take to fix the problem. "I asked why they were not sending the fix through normal downloads. They said the servers were also infected and that is why they needed to do the fix via email, Rona said. "Since I was at work we decided that they would call me on Saturday, when I would be at my laptop." If Rona had been at her laptop when the scammer had called, she might have simply followed the man's instructions, assuming the request to be legit. But after the call, she thought the whole story of an infected Trend Micro server was suspicious. "So I phoned Trend Micro (the real company) and they told me it was scam," she said, which caused her to promptly delete the email the mysterious man had sent. According to Trend Micro, the company's technical support never makes unsolicited phone calls to customers. A call will only be made if it's been pre-scheduled. Nevertheless, many Trend Micro customers are probably unaware of the policy.

Red Flag No. 1: A Valid Support Ticket Number

In Rona's case, the calls from the scammers didn't stop. Mere days after the first call, she received another from a man who also had an Indian accent, but sounded different from the first. Knowing that the man was likely part of the same scheme, Rona attempted to tease out details from the caller. "Eventually, he realized that I knew that he was scammer," she said. The man then made an alarming proposal. "He said, 'You have a really nice voice. You can pay me money and I'll sleep with you. How much do you want to pay?' Maybe he was trying to get my bank account number. I don't know." Rona promptly hung up. But the scam calls continued. She remembers receiving a third call from a man who was able to quote a valid Trend Micro customer support ticket number she has received from the company. That's when she began to strongly suspect Trend Micro had a serious breach on its hands. "I phoned them (the real Trend Micro) and I'm like how did they get my valid ticket number? That's not something you guess. And they just said, 'I'm sorry for the inconvenience," she recounted. "It was pretty obvious to me that an employee was behind this, but I didn't think Trend Micro was treating ouit serisly." In the meantime, scammers tried another tactic: bombarding her phone number with robocalls—sometimes three times a day—claiming Trend Micro was going to charge or credit her bank account, and that she need to respond. In all cases, the calls came from different numbers, making them unblockable.

Why No Earlier Warning?

The story from Rona matches the experiences other Trend Micro customers have been reporting to the company. "I received four phone calls this morning from someone saying they were with TrendMicro and that my account has been auto-renewed for $299.99," wrote one user in Trend Micro's support forums a month ago. "They told me I needed to log in to my computer and they would walk me through it; they told me they could help me get my computer to run faster free of charge." One customer reports the scammers trying to trick him into visiting a fake login portal for Trend Micro after supplying a valid support ticket. "When it was obvious they were up to no good and would not explain what they were doing, I disconnected my Ethernet cable and hung up," the user wrote in a separate forum post. Another user reported the scammers wanting bank account numbers on the pretenses of supplying a refund. So far, Trend Micro has remained mum on what the scammers were after, and if they were trying to install malware on to victims' computers. Whether Trend Micro will cover the costs for victims who fell for the scammers' schemes is also unknown. For now, the company has said it's continuing to investigate the breach with the help of law enforcement. The unnamed employee accused of supplying the customer information has also been terminated. Earlier this week, Trend Micro sent out emails to affected consumers notifying them about the breach. However, Rona questions why the antivirus vendor didn't warn customers about the threat sooner. Although Trend Micro did issue an advisory about the scam on Sept. 20, it was confined to a post on the company's support site. "It was really hypocritical of them. They put announcements on their web page about different companies having security problems, but they don't talk about their own," she said. "It feels like they are trying to hide it. There are people like my mother who could have easily fallen for this." In response to her concerns, Trend Micro's CEO Eva Chen did send an email to Rona apologizing for the breach. "We are taking actions to trace the data flow and collect evidence in an effort to assist shutting down the scammer group," Chen says in the email. "I promise that we have learned from this event and have already begun taking steps to help prevent this type of incident frm happening again." Read the full article

I backed into a tree that was in my blind spot 2 nights ago and got an estimate today of $2446.00 damage. My deductible is $250. My insurance agent quoted me a 75% increase in my monthly insurance cost. 75%!!!! This is ridiculous to me considering I have no other points on my insurance or any history. In the end after paying this increase over 3 years (plus deductible), it will cost me $2410. Shouldn't insurance save you money?
