also, i finally finished the mysteries and all i can say is. it sure was a book and you sure can read it
#as always i maintain that it is beautifully written HOWEVER#it suffers greatly from this-might-as-well-happen-itis#there were a great many more conveniences than i generally like in my books (especially if they purport to be mysteries)#and i swear to god if i had to read about one more fucking character prevaricating around an important plot point for six chapters#i was gonna scream#i can also see how it influenced northanger abbey#not just in the gothic pasticheness of it all but in the roundup at the end of the book#i think the mysteries resolved all its loose plot points in about three chapters or something?#which when converted to radcliffe is like three paragraphs#which is what i didnt like about NA too#the weirdly jarring wrap up at the end#its not quite as egregious in the rest of austens novels#anyway annette and ludovico are the mvps of the whole business#the mysteries of udolpho
