ramble on ultrakill ost
Up first! “Disgrace. Humiliation” and “Silence. Introspection.” These are the songs that play after their respective Gabriel fight. It’s made very clear that after Gabriel’s first defeat that he is baffled at the idea of being bested by what he calls an “object”, “nothing but scrap” so to speak. Not only is he humiliated by himself for not being able to overcome V1, who he likely thought would be an easy opponent, but The Holy Council as well, having the light of God eventually severed from his body and outcast as a result of his failure. He calls himself the righteous hand of the Father, but in the end he was not able to prove himself worthy of that title. It’s quite literally a “you had one job situation” taken to the extreme, the task being to dispose of V1 to keep it from desecrating hell.
I don’t have the Ultrakill lore and timeline in front of me so this part could be wrong, go easy on me, but I think Gabriel descended into Heresy either to get revenge or try to show the council he was still worthy. The idea behind that being if he can prove to the Council he is capable of defeating V1, he will be spared. If this is true in some reality, I have my doubts about whether they would forgive him. In their minds he should have not failed the first time and therefore wouldn’t need or deserve a second chance. And then there’s revenge, being the most likely (though I strongly believe he wants to see V1 for other reasons as well) and the simplest of the two options. Gabriel mentions in his monologue before the second fight that V1 took everything from him. Not only his status as God’s right hand man and his life (Presumably. He does mention that we’ll meet again, so the chances of him dying before Godfist Suicide are low. As sad as it is there's a good chance we will see him meet his end in the third chapter.) but the machines being responsible for the destruction of humanity who I assume are now the husks we go up against while we make our way through Hell.
We see that Gabriel has a change of heart during the second battle. He behaves erratically, and to be blunt, very homosexually. His wings change to the classic “ecstasy” texture and he shouts out questionable things that replace the mocking and degradation heard previously. Gabriel encourages V1 to “come get some blood” and to “fight him like an animal”. The second of the two is likely a jab at V1 being a machine, having to do with its battle style or whatever, but both are basically begging for V1 to not hold back.He wants this fight, and it's clear that he's having a fantastic time during it. After he is inevitably defeated once more and he comes down from his high, he takes some time to think to himself. There is silence. He is not ashamed or humiliated. He simply reflects on himself, his well-being, and the direction to take next. The introspection mentioned in the name of the song. Once he gets a hold of himself, he slaughters what remains of The Council and reminds them that God is dead and they have been chasing after an ever-fading light before he finishes them off. The defeat in both fights with V1 and the desperation seen in the second essentially served as a wake-up call. Post-nut clarity, if you will (sorry the demons told me to). One of my favorite character arcs in media by far. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
