A Girl and Her Cat

1975, a random fall Tuesday 

I don't know how it even happened, or how I met him. At the time I was living in a small town in Columbia run by Americans, keeping to myself, not drawing any attention to myself. He walked into my cafe and got a small black coffee. He stayed a while, reading his small novel.  

“Hi there, stranger, I got your coffee”, you said as you set down his drink. “Anything else?”

“No ma’am. Thank you”

“No problem”, you went to turn away but you had to know, “Um, hey?”

“Yes?”

“You've come in before.  What's your name?”

“Javier”

“Javier. I'm y/n. Let me know if you need anything. Maybe next time you could try a latte”, he lets out a snort. You go back to cleaning. It was extremely slow today so you got the go-ahead from your boss to close up early. 

“Miss?”

You turned around and saw Javier leaning up against his truck with a smile. 

You grasp your chest. “You scared me. I didn't notice you there.”

“Were you about to walk home?”

“Yes”

“Would you mind a ride?”

“My apartment isn't that far from here, but thank you I appreciate it.”

“Anytime.”

And like that, you were walking home, enjoying the weather. It was chilly and the leaves were falling beside you everywhere. You didn't mind the ten-minute walk to your apartment. You don't even get in the door before your cat starts meowing at you. 

“Avery, give me one moment. I'll feed you I promise.”. You love the hell out of the black cat but the girl is so needy.

You flick off your shoes by the front door, bending down to pet Avery. You walked past her to shake some food into her bowl. With how she rushes to it, you'd think she never got fed. Silly girl. You walk over to the couch and lay out, grabbing the blanket to get comfortable, a few moments pass and your cat hops up to snuggle up to you. You flip on your tv to find something to have in the background and settle on Hawaii Five O. There's something about cops that attracts you so much. You find yourself falling asleep, Avery radiating heat on your stomach.

You were woken up the next morning by your alarm clock; another day, another dollar. You were on second shift today so you didn't have to be in until 11. You got up and made yourself toast and eggs, making sure fatso had her food too. 

“Pretty girl”, you say scratching her chin and heading towards the door, adding an “I’ll be back later. Byeee”

The walk to the shop today was extra nice. You can smell the aroma of a pumpkin pie as you pass the houses in your neighborhood and hear the sounds of children playing outside. The giggles brought life to the quiet afternoon. As you come closer to the city, the more you hear the sounds of cars passing and smells of bread being baked at the bakery down the street. The bakers wave at you as you pass the front window. You hold up two fingers, gesturing back. Two shops down is Mrs. Rivera trying to hang up plants, struggling to steady herself, AND the hanging ivy pot.

“Here let me help you.”, you say as you come behind her and catch the pot, succeeding in hanging it up on her awning.

“Thank you, sweetheart!”, she says as she wipes her hands on her apron.

“No problem. I have to get going but come by for a latte?”, you ask.

“Yeah. I’ll see you” 

And with that, you were back to it. Half a block down and you come to the shop's front door. It dings as you enter.

“You're late”, your boss, Maria, gets on to you.

“Mrs. Rivera needed help again.”

“Uh-huh. Get your butt back there”, she snorts. She's not mad. Thank god.

“Been busy today?”You ask about taking off your backpack and hanging it up. The shop was basically vacant. The only customer you could see was a college kid studying in the corner. You walk around to pick up mugs and empty plates from various tables.

“Not really. The usuals mostly… Oh! A guy was asking about you! He asked if I knew if you got home safe?”, she asked, confused.

“Ah yes, Javier. He offered to take me home last night.”, you say while walking the dirty dishes to the back.

“He’s cute. You should get in there, girl”, she yells to you. “In there?”, you come around the corner and scoff, “I'm not that interested in dating right now.”

“You should. You can't just spend all your free time with your cat and nonexistent characters in your books.”

“Can.” You point out “And will” 

“You're only 24, do you really wanna throw away that opportunity?”

You could only muster up an eye roll.

The rest of the shift went off without a problem. Maria went home shortly after her talk with you. The next few hours included a couple of customers but mostly some cleaning. Mrs. Rivera actually came to see you, even getting a hot chocolate for her grandson when she got her latte. You hold a conversation with her for a while, talking about her daughter’s new job at the school. Maria said something about that a couple of weeks ago. The rest of the regulars got their usual drinks, only sticking around long enough for their drinks. The clock soon hits 7 pm.

“Another tea?”, you ask the college student in the corner. He’s been here for your whole shift and has gotten two hot green teas with sugar.

“No ma’am. I'm about to leave but I appreciate it.”

‘Alright. Don't be a stranger”, you say, taking his cup and saucer to the back to clean it off. You place it in the strainer to left it air dry. As you are in the back, the customer packed up and left, leaving the shop empty.

You walk past every table, wiping it down and stacking chairs on top, then grabbing the broom. You quite enjoy the quiet chill night, humming a simple tune. The night offers an array of noises through the open door: Grasshoppers chirping and the soft whistle of the breeze. You finish sweeping and put up the broom. “The tips were pretty good today”, you think, pushing the money into your pocket, removing your apron, locking up, and heading home.

You had Thursday off and planned to spend it accordingly. You slept until you couldn't anymore, got up, and fed Avery, offering extra pets to the needy cat. She snuggles up to you on the couch, laying in the space in front of your stomach. Your newest interest? Murder mysteries. So you are relaxing on the couch reading Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile. 

You get pretty far into the book before hearing a knock at your door. Weird. Then walk to unlatch the door, swinging it open.

“Uh... hello?”, you questioned the man in front of you. He’s standing there with his hand to the back of his neck, looking nervous

“Hi. Umm, I'm new to building. I live across the hall. I’m Anthony”, he reaches his hand out. You take his hand and shake it.

“Y/N”, you respond, smiling.

“Nice to meet you, Y/N”

“Would you like to come in for some coffee? I just put on a fresh pot”, you invite.

“Yeah, that sounds nice.”, his face sparks up in happiness. He takes your invitation and walks into your apartment, you close the door behind him.

‘Wow. Nice apartment. How long have you been living here?”

“Eh, a while”. Boy, you have NO idea.

He sits down at your dinner table and you bring over two coffee mugs.

“Cream? Sugar?”, you ask.

“Yes. Both please”, he responds and you hand him the containers of cream and sugar.

“Just moved here?”

“Yeah. From Arizona. The owner told me that you're one of the only Americans renting here. Thought I might come by and say hello.”

“Arizona, huh?”

“Yeah. I used to live in Georgia when I was a young girl but I’ve been around the world a lot. Been a while since I’ve been in the United States”, you drift off for a second but reel it in. “ Where in Arizona are you from?”

“Tucson. Wasn’t a bad place to live but I went to college for a major in the Spanish language. I wanted to visit places where I could hear the different dialects and see the different cultures. Thus, I am in Columbia.”

“Ah, you see I just wanted to see the world. I’ve been almost everywhere”

‘What was your favorite place to visit?”, he asks, fully focused on the conversation and not realizing Avery’s furry body rubbing against his shins. She meows. “Oh, well, hello there pretty girl. What’s your name?”. He reaches down to pet her back.

“That’s Avery. But back to your question, I was living in Greece for a while and I just adored the blue waters and sandy beaches.”

He takes a sip of his coffee and asks, “So what brought you here?”

“Need a change of scene. I had a friend who lived here but she passed away a couple of years ago”, you reply back nonchalantly, shrugging your shoulders.

“Oh, im so sorry to hear that. Not too pry but we’re you close?”

“Yeah, We knew each other for a while.”

“How’d she die?”, he asks further

“Old age”, you let slip.

“Old age? he responds surprised.

“Uh... yeah. A family friend.”, you try to make up a better story to keep suspicion off of you.

That conversation kind of ended before it started, instead opting for a conversation about Anthony’s studies in places like Cuba and Spain. The talk circled around to different places you’ve visited, Rome being a topic that seemed to trail on and on. The sun outside seems to start to set.

“I’ve got to get going but it was nice to meet you, Y’N”

“You too, Anthony. Let me know if you need a cup of sugar or anything”, you say following him towards your door. He steps through and across the hallway to his front door. When he shuts his door, you follow suit. You turn around and you can feel Avery’s judging eyes on you.

“I know, I almost blew my cover”, you tell your feline friend. She meows.

You weren't wrong when you told Anthony you’ve been living in Columbia for a while. The problem is his definition and your definition of “a while” were completely different. The truth is you lived in Columbia for 40 years and in this town for about 20. You didn’t age. The only person who could possibly know is Mrs. Rivera but she is very good at minding her own business. You were one of the only ones who came to her husband’s funeral a year ago. You’re practically family. The town’s oldest residents have passed and the owners of the apartments change every couple of years. The rent is paid in cash and the tenets come and go. Every couple of decades you move to another small town in another country. 

You lived a normal life but you didn’t know your parents. You lived in the orphanage until you were 18. It was then you took up a job, reading in your spare time, and traveling when you could. You didn’t even realize your immortality until you were 40 looking 20. And then 50 looking 20. You did try to date but soon came to realize that you’d outlive them, leaving a trail of broken hearts. You were pretty sure you were incapable of love. 80 years old and not prepared for what happened next.

Henry’s cheeks flushed, and he scratched at his earlobe, eyes resting anywhere but on the four faces of shock that his friends wore.

“Yeah it’s me, quit creamin’ your pants, Criss.”

You were the first to come forward, running curious fingers through the sandy locks, mesmerized by how short they were now. It had taken years of nagging, innocent little taunts and remarks about how outdated the boys hair had been, but finally, he had cut it to a somewhat normal style. The sides were buzzed short and with a bit of a longer cut on top, styled a top his head with mousse to give it a little extra volume. Henry looked unsure, a little nervous to show his face you’d guess, he had always been defensive of his hairstyle, and you figured he might be worried that you and the others would see his as defeat instead of an image change.

“I like it. You look very handsome.” You said sweetly as he swatted your hands away.

“You saying i wasn’t handsome before?” He snapped, but the smirk that played on his lips was evidence enough that he was happy with your compliment.

“Oh god, you were hideous.” Patrick said from behind you, and you turned, eyes lifting to his mop of dark hair.

“Uh huh.” You said absently, Belch snickering from beside Vic, who both heard the nonchalant challenge in your voice. You took to Patrick, clicking your tongue and pushing long locks from his face, noticing how his jaw tightened.

“Something wrong with my hair, Princess?” He mimicked your sweet tone, taking your hand and spinning you around to pull you close so that your back hit his chest. You muffled a little laugh as he rested his chin on top of your head, chest vibrating against your back as he spoke. “I thought you liked boys with long hair? What happened to that?”

“Henry buzzed his hair, I see the light, I’m a changed woman.” You said with enough theatrics to shame a drama kid, closing your eyes with a wistful expression.

“Hmph.” The dark haired boy grunted, wrapping an arm loosely around your waist as your eyes opened again, seeing Vic run a hand across the soft fuzz of Henry’s head.

“Its a good change. I bet Carly Henderson will actually look at you now.” Vic said with a little smile, Henry snickering.

“I’ve had her twice with that glorious mane of mine. I’ll have no problem with her, mullet or not. She’s easy.”

Belch gave Henry a little side eye at the comment, but left it be, sticking his hands in his pockets. “You look good, man.”

Two weeks passed, Henry’s popularity with the girls in your grade growing by the day. Lunchtime was hell for you and the others, girl after girl coming up and trying to schmooze some attention from your friend, who was getting quite an inflated ego from it all. Vic was the first to complain, you quickly followed up as the second, but more so because you were being bothered in and out of class because Henry Fucking Bowers decided to ditch the mullet and get a nice haircut for once.

You had a few classes with the boys, but for the most part, you spent most of your time at Derry high school without them, only seeing them during gym, homeroom and lunch. Thus, you were an easy target for the female population of Derry High to hound about each and every one of them.

Usually they would ask about Patrick, Mr. Tall, Dark and Psychotic. You would be fair enough to warn those girls who had heart eyes for that boy, but rarely did they listen to you. The few that made it into Patricks romantic life ended up regretting it, not having believed how rough and handsy he could be. The boy was overwhelming, and not the least bit romantic.

You always seemed more eager to showcase Belch or Vic though, happy to pimp your sweet boys out to the masses. Vic had a certain type, however, and even when girls approached him, he sent them away more often than not. You had no idea what he was looking for, but apparently it couldn’t be found in Derry.

Belch, or Reggie as you lovingly took to call him, had grown in popularity since freshman year. He rose to stardom in various sports around school, and girls fawned over how tall and muscular he had become over the years. He was a sweet boy, with a lot of love to give, and you had successfully set him up on numerous dates. A few built on to becoming long and lasting relationships, but after a few months girls seemed to lose interest and ghost him.

You blacklisted those girls, hoping they could feel your shame eyes burning into their backs as you walked to classes.

Henry though, Henry had never been a favorite of the girls. He was crass, unbelievably rude, and you had heard plenty of girls calling him ‘Damaged Goods’. Henry was rough around the edges, cruel nearly always, but you could never bring yourself to call him damaged goods. He was your friend, and despite being a hard headed dick sometimes, you knew that what was under that thick skin of his was a guy in need of a lot of love and acceptance.

So it was different, hearing girls ask about him. What did he like? What were his favorite movies, colors, and flavor of candy? Did he like going out on dates? What was he like outside of school?

You welcomed these questions the first few days, but eventually it became exhausting, and you addressed this at lunch one day, holding a bag of hot cheetos out for Patrick to munch on while making a point to keep eye contact with Henry.

“Dude. You gotta ask a girl out. I am begging you. For the love of god, pick one.” You said quickly, glancing around in search of the mob to come. “Please.”

“God, yes, please.” Vic agreed, leaning over and nipping a cheeto from Patrick’s fingers. He munched on it for a second before frowning. “And make sure she isn’t annoying. Don’t mess with the dynamic of the group.”

“The fuck you talking about, ‘The dynamic’?” Henry scoffed, no lunch packed for himself that day as he chose to steal from your carefully made meal. He dipped a carrot in hummus as he looked to Belch. “You hearing this shit?”

“I am… And I agree. We already have a…” Belch paused, sipping at a coke his mother had packed for his lunch. “A set role for each of us, I guess. You, the leader,” You noticed Henry puff up a little at that, pleased to be recognized as such. “Patrick, as literal Satan. Vic, the romeo, stealing hearts wherever he goes while being the most fashionable and stable one of us. Me, the guy with the wheels who make sure you all don’t run around like lunatics. And [First Name], the queen of the bowers gang.”

“Aw.” You smacked a hand to your chest, feeling loved. “Thank you, Reggie.”

“Literal Satan?” Patrick repeated, stuffing hot cheetos on his mouth. “Really?”

“That was an understatement, you’re right.” Vic nodded, jokingly assuring Patrick, but continued where Belch left off. “Don’t get some girl who fucks that up for us, man. There’s already going to be a challenge with having two girls in a group, don’t snag a girl who wants to take over one of our roles.”

“Right- wait. You think… It would be a challenge to have another girl around?” You looked to Vic, then to Belch, who at least had the decency to look guilty. “Why?”

“You don’t play nice, Princess.” Patrick answered, stealing a swig of your lemonade and smacking his lips. “You get a little jealous when we screw around with other girls.”

“I- I do not!” You defended.

“You do.” Belch said, and Patrick gave an amused snort at your side. “My last girl backed off because of you, actually. You’re a lot for someone who doesn’t know you like we do, and, well, you’re really… Touchy feely? Handsy? Like P-”

“You better hold that thought, Reggie. I am not as handsy as Patrick.”

Henry, unimpressed and munching on another carrot, looked you dead in the eyes. “You’re worse sometimes. You get away with it better as a girl, I guess, but you kiss our cheeks, play with our hair and hug us all the time.”

“Not to mention calling us at all hours of the night.” Vic added.

“You steal my shirts and wear them to school, people thought we were dating for a solid three months at one point.” Patrick patted your arm. “Face it. You’d intimidate the hell out of any girl who dated one of us.”

You sat there for a moment, shocked to silence. Then, slowly, you took your lemonade and took a long gulp before setting it back on the table. “I’m ruining your love lives, aren’t I?”

In unison, the boys nodded. “Yep.”

“Ah fuck me. Is this why no boys ask me out? Am I unapproachable, because people think im pinning after one of you?”

“For the most part, yes.” Belch shrugged, scratching at his neck. “I keep telling the guys on the team that you’re available, but I guess they’re not hitting you up, huh?”

You groaned, resting your forehead on Vic’s shoulder. “I’m cockblocking you all and myself.”

“Huh.” Patrick said, catching your attention. “When was the last time you went out with a guy?”

You narrowed your eyes. “A long… Long time ago.”

I'm an 18 year old guy on my parents' insurance and I have a 2003 Mitsubishi lancer that's probably not going to last me that long so I am looking for another car. Can I get liability insurance if I do a roll over?

I'm currently financing a vehicle and I simply can't afford it anymore. I'm considering doing a trade in for a cheaper car. I would be trading in my car which has a higher value than the car. How do I challenge my auto insurance company's appraisal of damages to other car in an at-fault(my) acci ?

I read-ended another car at an intersection. Both of us were stopped at a light. When the light turned green, the other car started moving and immediately slammed on brakes. In the meanwhile, I had taken my foot off brake and hit the car (at < 5mph). The other party has filed claim for $1350 for damages and also for unknown amount of bodily injury. There is not even a mark of any collision on my car (as the speed was low). My insurance company has agreed to their claim related to damages and is waiting for the exact amount for the bodily injury claim. i had a weird dream that both of my parents were monsters

i believe my mother was a demon, and my father was a sort of law enforcement angel. neither knew the others identity, as they had disguised themselves as human andhad fallen in love. both fully believed the other was human.

this changed when my mother gave me a necklace for my birthday. in real life, that necklace is something my sister bought from scotland that has ogham on it, something about holly trees. but in the dream, it was a sign of my mothers demonic heritage, and she likely gifted it to me due to her needing to do something, and wanting me to have something to remember her by.

and thats fine. but my dad saw the necklace. and as a demon hunter angel, he recognized it instantly, and asked if he could have a look at it. ‘to find its history’, he said. and i said sure, because im the sort of kid who would love to know the history behind family heirlooms. so i gave him the necklace to look over,and i went off to school for the day.

while i was out, a demon appeared nearby, a creature with a texture like potato skin and a shape similar to a hexagon? or a d20, that might describe it better. a big potato beast with the facets of a d20. who then split in half to explore. my mother saw this, and promptly left the house and shed her human form. she was sort of vampiric looking, with large horns and glowing eyes.

my father didnt see her leave, but noticed she was gone, and he then went into his secret study behind the bookcase, which could be opened by manipulating the fantasy books he had on his top shelf. he then left by a secret entrance.

at this point i arrive home, having been held up due to heavy books and bus times. im walking part of the way home, coming down the bike track next to the dog park, which was wear the potato demon was. but i see no sign of any of them. what i do see is the backyard of the house directly on the corner of where the bike path diverts into a small sandy path that connects back to the streets. its a wide backyard, lush and green, and a brand new pale grey stone sort of courtyard has been built. two people stand there, a parent and a child, and as i walk past they turn to look at me. being awkward, i just avert gaze and keep walking.

in their renovations, theyve extended their backyard to the left, meaning the sandy path is only big enough for one person, if even that. but since im small, i get through without much issue, and head on home (which is far closer to the bike path in the dream)

i find noone home, but i do find the necklace i gave my father on the top shelf of his bookcase. when i grab it, i accidentally trigger the mechanism, with two ‘layers’ of books falling forward and then pushing back in, and the bookcase swings open to reveal my fathers secret study.

the dream seemed to end there, but i imagine once inside i found a bunch of stuff about demons, and perhaps sign of a scuffle (between my father and potato demon, perhaps?) and so i would assume my parents had been kidnapped by demons. especially as their cars were in the driveway/garage. so then, yknow, go hunt for my parents.

there was a very weird tangent about my mum wanting to fuck the potato demon?? who i believe was called Kayli. that or my mum was kayli. there was some fucking weird shit going on there. it was possible a trick or trap? because Kayli had split in half, and my mum ended up getting deeply distracted by one half. which might mean the other half had time to go and attack my dad? who even knows. i dont. it was weird.

but yea! my parents were starcrossed lovers but they didnt even know it and wont find out until probably one of them dies at the end, or my dad goes to capture/kill my mother and suddenly goes ‘oH FUCK’. possibly both, if it was kill, and he didnt realise until too late. because, and heres the thing, both were in disguise. their demon/angel forms do have similarities, but if you werent looking for it, you wouldnt see it. my dad has no reason to look for my mothers face in a demon, and she no reason to look for his face in an angel. meanwhile i, who have probably been on some deep journey involving the bike path slipstream between dimensions and the wooded paths ‘out back’, ive learnt a lot about both. for instance, ive probably found out that my mum is a demon, just because i have her necklace and have been attacked/treated nicely by demons because of it. they look at it and go ‘oh, [mums name in the dreams] kid! how is she doing?’ ‘w-what?’ ‘? thats her necklace, isnt it? and you look ust like her, except more human. hows she been doing? havent seen her in decades!’ ‘??????????????????????????’

so i dramatically bust in to find my parents locked in mortal fucking combat and i go ‘Mom????!’ and shes like ‘wHAT’ and dads like ‘WHAT’ and its very confusing and conflicting for everyone involved.

alternatively, if my father has the necklace, then my mother recognizes it (no shit, its hers) and demands to know why he has her necklace. which is instantly confusing because, well, he got this from his child??? who got it from their mother??? so who the - oh fuck me. thatd be just sort of how it goes.

though surely if my dad is a demon hunter and recognized that the necklace was demonic, he’d be looking out for her in demons? unless he thinks that she’s maybe been possessed or something, hence going on a big ol battle fight trying to find his Definitely-Human Wife, who he would believe was captured and replaced by a demon. coincide it with external drama (and the fact my mum had been planning to leave for a little while, thus changing her attitude) and he’d think the necklace was some sort of signal for demons to come kick our ass. which, well, it SORT of was, considering like a day after i get it, Kayli the Potato Fucker appears to kick our asses.

idk. its all dramatic and shit. and naturally im half demon half angel and look like a human kid. which is good fun. depending on showdown circumstances i probably haveto fight off both of them at once. maybe its like, as i travel through the ~spirit realms~ i shed my human form a little bit as well which means i ALSO look different. got like, angel wings and devil horns. shits whack. and because they arent expecting me to be there, they dont recognize me either. dad would think im a devil pretending to be an angel to fucking trick him, and mum would think im an angel pretending to be a devil to fucking trick her. suddenly im fighting my parents. who, idk. whether i recognize them depends on adrendaline and whether I have the necklace. assume i do. then it would be fun if i didnt, and i fought them both for a bit, and when i get my ass beat my mum swoops in for the kill and then goes ‘wHERE THE FUCK DID YOU GET THAT’ and grabs the necklace and then, yknow, ~revelations~. because id say i got it from my mum, and she’d be confused, and then my dad would recognize it as the one he took from me and HED be confused. the entire final showdown part after the necklace comes into play is just OOF, my guy.

admittedly at that point im probably aware that both my parents are non-human. my mum is the obvious one, since i have her demon necklace, but i probably find out my dads an angel because he’s been rampaging through the spirit realms after getting briefly captured by Kayli. depending on how that layed it, its possible id actually seen him before and possibly even freed him FROM the half of Kayli Potato that caught him. and he probably played dumb, pretending he didnt know me (for my safety, naturally) and just told me to go home. spirit realm is no place for a human. probably says something that makes it way too obvious he know where i live. maybe he mentioned the bike path slipstream? which, assuming there are multiple ‘slip streams’ like it, implies he knows exactly which one i used to get in and that i live close to it. hence, oops thats my dad, yknow. and plus he’s going on a rampage after that, and if i meet any friendly demons or angels, they likely mention it. an angel would actually be really good for that, and fighting an angel before i fight my dad makes sense as a build up thing. maybe in the middle of a friendly conversation they suddenly spot my demon necklace and go ‘oh no. ohhhhno. where did you get that.’ ‘from my mum?’ ‘your mOTHER?’ ‘yea?’ ‘..... give it to me’ ‘no? its mine?’ ‘i dont think you understand whats at stake her. your mortal soul is in peril’ ‘what the fuck are you talking about’ and then, yknow, some grown ass angel asshole starts trying to beat up a kid for a demon necklace and WHOOPS thats my demonic heritage exposed because oops i just blasted an angel in the facewith demon magic before fucking bolting. and i dont know what i look like, so i cant see the horns, though i likely suddenly become aware of them when i try and find somewhere to sleep and fail to. or when i get out of the spirit realm to sleep and look in a mirror and fuckin shit myself.

the revelations of my parents heritage are a bit awkward because once i know one, the other one gets REAL weird, as a thing to reveal. revealing my dads heritage incidentally is probably the easiest one to do, since angels are probably friendlier to humans. probably. and when i freed my dad, i didnt know about his heritage, and so didnt recognize him (its a place-faces thing). but then, yknow, talk to another angel who tells me to go home because ‘his good buddy is going wild and its not a good time to be here. its never a good time to be here, but especially not now, kid’ ‘why is he going crazy?’ ‘something about his wife? i havent seen him in two decades but i think he married some human woman who has gone missing.’ ‘huh.’

The Problem Isnt Just Trump. Its Our Ignorant Electorate.

For many of us, mornings have taken on a certain nauseating sameness. We roll out from beneath the blankets and, before the scent of coffee has reached our nostrils, we are checking the news feeds for the latest semi-literate tweet coughed up by the ranting, traitorous squatter occupying the Oval Office.

The rest of the day is spent in a kind of horrified suspension, holding our breath, waiting for whatever outrage will inevitably belch forth from the White Houseonce a bastion of seriousness and decorum, now ground zero for the demise of western democracy. How many lies will Trump spew today? Which dictators will he suck up to? Will he smear a Gold Star family? Attack a woman who dares to call out his smarmy predations? Unveil a puerile, racist nickname for a Senator or member of his own cabinet?

As much as we loathe it, however sickening it might have become, every day seems all about him, a former game show host and real estate failure, a hawker of rot-gut vodka and bullshit degrees from a fraudulent University who once styled himself as the Donald. The cable news shows lead with his most recent flatulence, the op-ed pages brim with intimations of doom, late night comedians are having a field day.

He is the president and, thus, bears watching. But we would be mistaken to think that he is truly the center of our universe, a man with a plan, commanding the heights, directing the action.

Virulent as he may be, Donald J. Trump is a symptom not the disease. Without us, he would amount to nothing more than what he had always been before the bizzaro presidential election of 2016: a foppish narcissist desperate for any measure of affirmation; a joke; a nothing. He did not create his voters. They have been there all along, seething with sometimes justifiable anger and suffering their various insecurities. They created and enabled Trump. And make no mistake, in all their vulnerable humanity, they are us: Gullible, compliant, distracted, marinating in irony.

At root, we the people are the problem.

We are understandably reluctant to impugn the intelligence and integrity of our fellow citizens. It is arrogant, uncivil, bad form. Who are we, any of us, to hold ourselves superior? When Hillary Clinton referred to some Trump supporters as deplorables, she was roundly castigated on all sides. How dare she? Yet it is an uncomfortable reality that anywhere from a fifth to a third of our electorate can be fairly (if gently) described as low-information voters. If the results of numerous polls and questionnaires are to be trusted, they know very little about the world they inhabit and what they do know is often woefully incorrect.

Surveys conducted every two years by the National Science Foundation consistently demonstrate that slightly more than half of Americans reject the settled science concerning human evolution. They are not unaware that virtually all credible scientists accept the overwhelming evidence that we evolved from earlier species. They simply choose not to accept that consensus because it doesnt comport with their deeply held beliefs. Many also embrace the absurd notion that the earth is only six thousand years old. Astonishingly, in the early 21st century, around a quarter of our citizenry seems unaware that said earth revolves around the sun.

It is a mistake to regard concern about such ignorance as effete snobbery or elitist condescension. While misapprehensions about basic astronomy, earth science and biology may have little impact on these folks daily lives, does anyone actually believe that similarly uninformed views arent likely to affect their grasp of policies regarding, say, climate change? Income inequality? Gun violence? Immigration?

Profound knowledge gaps like the aforementioned reveal an inability to think critically and leave a person vulnerable to all manner of chicanery. We are all ignorant about many things. Dont get me started on my dismal grasp of mathematics! But the hallmark of a sound education is not glorying in what you think you know, but, instead, appreciating the vastness of what you dont know.

If ignorance is the key that opens the door for charlatans like Trump, improved education, whether in school or in the public square, would seem to provide an obvious solution. But here we confront the perverse Dunning-Kruger Effect identified by psychologistsessentially, the less we know, the more certain we become of our superior knowledge. We have also discovered that exposure to facts and evidence does not always have the expected impact. Many people, when confronted by irrefutable proof that some core belief is incorrect, dont change their minds but dig in their heels. What feels right to them must be right and no amount logic and reasoning will dissuade them. Emotion trumps evidence.

Not too long ago, I fell into conversation with a woman aboard an airplane. Our chat somehow turned to health care. She offered the opinion that people who couldnt afford health insurance didnt deserve medical services. Why should she pay for someones care when they were obviously too lazy to earn their own money?

Because Im my own kind of fool, I rose to the bait. Did that mean they should be allowed to die in the street? I wondered. Well, no, she said. That would be inhumane. They could always go to an emergency room. So she was willing to pay for their care, I observed, but only in the least efficient, most expensive manner. This gave her momentary pause, but she quickly regrouped, simply repeating her prior assertion: Why should she pay? I didnt ask who she planned to vote for in the then-upcoming presidential election, but given that she had also voiced the opinion that women were, by virtue of their gender, unqualified to be news anchors, Im guessing it wasnt Hillary Clinton or Jill Stein.

She is hardly the worst example of an unthinking voter. Bill Maher once invited onto his show former GM Executive Bob Lutz. One supposes that such a fellow has benefited from an adequate education and that hes open to reason. Yet, when the subject of climate change arose, Lutz denied it was happening. A bunch of nonsense as far as he was concerned.

As it happened, Maher had also invited Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist, educator and Director of the Hayden Planetarium. Tyson patiently explained why Lutz was misinformed. The planet was warming. Humans were largely to blame. This is how we know.

You might expect an educated person to respond by at least engaging on the topic. Tyson was, after all, vastly more knowledgeable on the subject at hand. Had their roles been reversed, with the topic being cars, I have no doubt he would have deferred to the automaker, asking questions, trying to improve the state of his own knowledge. Not Lutz. You could see him shutting down before Tyson had even warmed to the topic (no pun intended). As Upton Sinclair famously put it, Its hard to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on him not understanding it.

Anyone who has watched the focus groups of Trump voters has seen this sorry dynamic played out again and again. Everything, no matter how tawdry or malicious, is excused or minimized. You get the feeling these folks would accept the sexual molestation of teenage girls as a trade-off for Neil Gorsuch. In fact, many did in supporting Roy Moore.

Welcome to the Post-Truth Era.

Much has been written about the impact social media and the internet in general have had on how people receive and absorb information. By now, we are all familiar with bots, trolls, phony scandals and the tendency of folks to hunker down in their own info-silos. The old adage that a lie is halfway round the world before the truth gets its socks on has never been more salient.

Consider the recent attacks on one of the young Parkland shooting survivors. A teenager who had just witnessed classmates being gunned down at his own school quickly discovered that speaking up for common-sense gun regulation resulted in vicious trolling and the viral lie that he was a paid crisis actor. This was similar to what befell the grieving families of the small children murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. Imagine waking one morning in a state of searing grief over the violent death of your baby to discover that some odious prankster like Alex Jones is telling his gullible audience that the whole tragic incident was staged, that your child was actually a paid performer doused in artificial gore and posed in a gruesome tableaux of death.

That Jones and his ilk have not been thoroughly shamed and driven from the public sphere says a lot about our growing tolerance for vile nonsense.

Trump did not invent Fake News. The Big Lie has been the stock in trade of con men and tyrants since time immemorial. But he understands its value. Alternative facts as his lickspittle factotum, Kellyanne Conway infamously put it, has long been his metier. Hes a bullshitter, a phony and now hes our president.

This shouldnt have happened. But we let it happen, though Trump did have plenty of help

Unsurprisingly, the Fox propaganda machine and any number of right-wing radio ranters enthusiastically clambered aboard the Trump Train. They were abetted by many in the mainstream media who, mindful that Trump lured eyeballs to advertisers and too timid to call him out as the carnival barker he so obviously was, went along for the ride. A number of Republicans in Congress dismissed him at first. But when it became clear he had a shot at winning and that his devotees comprised at least half of their party, they scurried to adopt him as their useful idiot.

Its true that we are not all equally culpable. Roughly three million more people voted for Trumps chief opponent. But the right-minded among us didnt do enough to forestall the plainly looming disaster. The proof of that is the Trump presidency itself.

So, if we in our various incarnations are the problem, then what is the solution? Is there any way out? Wed better hope so. Whats certain is that its on us. We made a wreck of our government and its up to us to fix it.

There are positive signs:

A once compliant media has begun to take the gloves off. Genuine conservatives, outraged that their movement has been hijacked by philistines, are sounding the alarm. People are rising up and calling BS. For every Sean Hannity there is a Rachel Maddow, Jake Tapper or even Shepard Smith (at Fox News, no less!). For every Paul Ryan, there is a David Frum or Max Boot. Frothing crowds at CPAC are countered by the #MeToo movement and impressively eloquent teenagers fed up with politicians of any stripe who cower before the gun industry. On a good day, a John McCain or Jeff Flake will stand up to the cringing accommodationists in their own party. And, of course, Donald Trump himself, along with his corrupt lackeys, face a formidable foe in the person of Robert Mueller.

NSA Director Admiral Mike Rogers recent testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee should mark a turning point, though he merely confirmed what has been apparent for some time: that even as our nation is under attack from a Russia determined to subvert our democracy, the president has not directed any relevant agencies to defend the country. This is a violation of the oath Trump swore on inauguration day and smacks of treason. We have entered uncharted waters.

Whats clear is that we need to use all non-violent resources at our disposal to rid ourselves and our country of the dangerous infection spreading from the White House into our body politic. These are not normal times and our usual reflexes will no longer suffice.

Trump is a problem of our own creation. We must become the solution.
