A slight glance at the clock on his nightstand indicated that it was 10:49 pm, and he knew that within a matter of minutes he’d be doing the exact thing he said he would never do. His palms had grown sweaty and he felt his heart rate quicken at the thought, and all he could think to do was wipe his palms on his sweats. He remembers the conversation he had about his thoughts with Minghao vividly, even though it had happened months before his current situation.

“I just don’t see how you can do it, how do you not get embarrassed? It was going to be a long night.

Stuck on the Wednesday evening shift for the third time this month, you mindlessly fiddled with the pen in your hand. He’s not some rich asshole trying to flash his cash. “A good suit can last you five years, if you treat it right.” Your hand reached over to graze one of the deepened blue sleeves of a jacket at your left. “And a classic colour will never go out of style.”

Paul let out an embarrassed chuckle. “I think you’ve already noticed how lacking in style I am…” He glanced to your nametag, murmuring your name with a goofy smirk curling his lips. You’d never seen a grown man, especially not one of this stature, appear so adorable. It was horribly distracting.

“I’m sure you have expertise in other areas,” you stumbled, realizing only when the words came out how offensive they might seem. Yet Paul conceded to your comment, his rumbling laugh making your chest feel tight.

“Debatable,” he shrugged. “I’m just glad I found some qualified personnel to help me in this instance.”

Oh boy. Humble and charming? You were in so much trouble. Surely someone as sweet as this had another waiting for them at home. “I’m sure your partner could help you pick out something nice too.”

There was rustling you heard emanating from the changeroom stall, doing your best to ignore the urge of picturing Paul, a man you’d met only minutes ago, gradually slipping off his clothes to reveal the toned muscles underneath. Finally, a response lit up on your phone screen.

The waistline of the jacket needed to be taken in, the shoulder lines sitting slightly off, and the trouser length needing to be taken up slightly. “A couple of adjustments and it’ll be perfect.”

“You mean taking it to be tailored?”

“No need.” You pulled out the wheel of berry pins from your pocket, kneeling down on the floor next to Paul’s feet. “All our tailoring is included in the price. “You do all the tailoring yourself?” Paul asked as you slinked another pin through the fabric.

“Sure do,” you chirped, moving onto the other leg. “3 years at a design school taught me a few things about cutting and sewing.” With the hemlines in place, you straightened in front of him, plucking out a roll of measuring tape from your other pocket. “I just… need to take a few measurements to properly alter the jacket.”

His cheek twitched, the line of his jaw seeming somewhat strained. “Sure. F-fine. Do what you gotta do."

You went with determining his arm length first, feeling out the boney point of his shoulder and striping the lined tape all the way down to his wrist. Then, after taking a deep inhale, you curled your arms around his hips, focusing hard on the little black numbers to ignore the fact Paul’s breath had started to skate over your skin with this close proximity. It was when you were lining up the thickened stripes indicating his chest circumference that you made the mistake of peering up, finding his alluring stare fully concentrated on you.

You shook your head, wishing you could give another answer just to keep him here. “You’re all set.” The full price of his items flashed on the monitor in front of you, spouting it to him as your fingers flicked across the keyboard to finalize the purchase, with a personal discount that wouldn’t show on the receipt.

“When should I come by to pick it up?” he queried, passing you his credit card. “Oh, but there’s no pressure. Whenever you have the time is just fine.”

An idea flared. “If you give me your number, I can text you when it’s ready.”

“That works for me.”

Erasing all evidence of the conversation you’d been having, you brought up the number pad, handing your phone over. Paul swiftly typed in his details before placing it back in your palm. ‘Paul the Suit Guy’ the contact read, unable to stifle your laugh.  

“So I’ll see you tomorrow?” His eager expression made your heart quiver through a beat.

“Y-yeah,” you stammered. “I’ll see you then.”

Paul waved his hand in an awkward flourish to signal his goodbye, eventually moving far enough from your vision for you to finally take a full, relaxed breath. In a dazed hurry, you keyed in your returning message to your co-worker.

It was the precise moment your thumb had pressed into the ‘Send’ button that you realised your recipient wasn’t the one you’d intended.

Hot breath stings your trembling fingers as Diego huffs a laugh; it’s barely a sound, a mumble of a chuckle, but you feel it vibrate through your body and hit your hand and it almost does you in. Or is this just another friendly motion you’re yet again reading into?

You continue on, slipping from the topic of your coworker to the free muffin you got with your coffee last week, to the prospects of buying a pet to keep your apartment less lonely, and to what probably felt like a thousand and one things ranted at him. All the while your hands continue, making neat work of a task that had just felt impossible.

And miraculously, aside from a chuckle thrown now and then, Diego stays silent. Maybe he actually means it. Maybe he does like your voice -- or he’s so bored he’s falling asleep, you don’t know. But it’s okay, you don’t let yourself linger on that, too content with taking in his relaxed features and the gentleness of the afternoon sun on the two of you.

“Aaaand….there!” With a triumphant shout, you throw the eyeliner to the side and your hands plunge towards the sky, fist-pumping like you’d just won the lottery. Your body bounces up and down on his lap like a child meeting Santa; in your excitement, you barely notice. “You’re done!”

“That’s it?”

“Yup.” You grabble for a mirror, looking away from him for a moment as you reach for the handle. Wiping it off, you’re focused solely on making sure the glass is clean enough for him to see himself in, and your brain is distracted enough to totally forget what you’ve even done, enough so when you look up, all you have is,

“Oh.”

Look, you know Diego is an attractive man. You’ve known since the day you met; he’s a beautiful guy, a handsome asshole who wormed his way into your befuddled heart before you could even learn his name. He’s pretty enough that if he wasn’t so set on his weird vigilante career, he could probably shoot for being a damn supermodel. He’s a catch! But all those years of knowing that and feeling like that could not prepare you for the sight in front of you.

Diego squints at you, cocking his head. “Is it okay?”

“I…” Delicate black lines his upper lash line, making his deep brown eyes stand out even more. He’s smiling still, full lips curving up to only make your heart pound faster. A strand of his hand falls across his face, painting the gentlest of shadows but it doesn’t bother his pretty face. “I...no, no, yea-ah…”

“Wow,” he laughs, jabbing a finger into your side. “Eloquent.”

“I-I-shut up,” you stammer. You force the mirror into his hands and look away. You’re still on his lap, still straddling his lap and the logical part of your brain begs you to get it together and fall off, already. But the stupid, foolish, absolutely idiotic part leaves you paralysed. “Just look for yourself.”

You squeeze your eyes shut and wait for him in the silence. There’s nothing, though, for achingly painful seconds, until the mirror shifts down. “Huh.”

“Huh, good? Or bad?” 

“I wasn’t expecting this.”

“Really? What’s wrong?”

“It’s not bad,” he assures you, his smile evident in his tone. “Just different. Don’t know how to feel about it.”

“O-oh...well, if it makes you feel better, I think it looks great.”

“You do?”

Oh, dammit. That came out with way too much enthusiasm, didn’t it? Your legs are concrete as you shift, face angled towards the floor. Hopefully he’s strong enough to push you off him when your body literally catches flame from humiliation. 

“You look good man,” he mocked back to you. But he’s grinning, egging you on like a child who knows he’s got you twisted around his pinky finger. “Come on, say it like you don’t have a gun to your head!”

And maybe you do, maybe you’re holding the revolver to your temple, just asking to get screwed if you dare speak beyond the most stilted compliment you’ve ever extended to someone. He’s a friend, you remind yourself; friends are allowed to compliment the other. They’re allowed to say they look good and not make it a thing, even if they wish it was a thing, and--

“--hey? You in there?”

“Sorry,” you say to the floor. You swear a thousand curses before looking back to Diego. And, yeah -- he still looks impossibly good. The ageing afternoon sun falls just perfectly against his skin, flushing him into the being of a god, standing in your apartment while you, a mere mortal, remains stuck to his thick thighs.

You gulp in air desperately, trying to catch your gaze on something, anything else -- but nothing sticks. He’s still there, inches from you, desperately aching for you to stare at.

“No, uh, yeah. You look - you look hot.”

“-I look hot?”

That isn’t what you were supposed to say.

“I,” you have literally nothing to save yourself. This is the end! You’re young Leo and Rose is shoving you off the door and into the icy waters, and you’ve just got one last look at pretty Diego to satiate the freezing burn before you succumb to it. “I...wasn’t...that wasn’t what I meant.”

He has no right to look so smug. But he does it anyway. He leans away from your hands as they flutter through the air on their own accord, looking at you through half-lidded pools of caramel. “You don’t think I look hot?”

“Don’t,” you warn, with little strength behind it. “Don’t twist my words.”

“I’m just asking.”

He leans back in. You’re almost touching again. 

Is this weird? This is definitely weird.

You swallow back the lump in your throat and stare back at him. This all feels like fifth grade all over again -- awkward, sticky and like every move is the wrong move. But you can’t stop yourself from playing into his hands, because that sly, shameful part of you wants this more than will ever be admitted. You want him to look at you like this, like you could hang the stars if he asked you to...and you want him to pull you closer, as he does, and mean it.

Could he?

“Would you hate me? If I thought you looked hot?”

Diego head cocks to the side as he seemingly contemplates your words. A nudge meets your side; you look down to see his hands once again reaching for you. Though it's on their own accord this time, gently landing on your left hip, then the right. You shiver.

“That depends,” he says slowly. His eyes narrow, black wings just barely crinkling in. “D’you mean it like, ‘oH, that’s so-oo hot, woW-’”

Your laugh is hardly a whisper. It cracks even before your lips. “Come on.”

“Or, do you…” his fingers dig in a little more. They nudge at the fabric of your top, daring it to move enough so they could cradle the flesh hidden underneath. “You mean it the other way?”

Heart in throat, all the courage you can possibly muster with it, you mutter, “the...other way, probably.” Then a second later, “is that okay?”

“Mm…” His fingers finally reach your skin. You shiver under his touch, warm and unflinching as they brush against the soft curves. Diego’s face comes towards your own and you force yourself not to move. But he doesn’t stop, instead he goes past you, brushing his plush lips against your earlobe. “I would say...that if all this took was making you do my eyeliner, I shoulda asked years ago.”

“I, okay...don’t play with me, here--”

“--I’m serious,” he protests lowly. His lips leave your ear but they don’t run far. Instead, you find them a brush away from your own, just as you were minutes before. Only this time, you don’t try to clamp your mouth shut and skirt away from the touch. You nudge your nose against his own, exhaling softly as more skin meets the heat of his own. “You think I just let anyone sit on my lap like this, without thinkin’ it could be more?”

You shrug like this is normal. Like you’re perfectly at peace with the universe and the way you’re wondering how his tongue would taste, pushing back against your own. “I mean...do you?”

“No,” he chuckles low. “No, I’m...not into friendly lap dances, actually.”

“O-oh. Mm.”

He pulls you closer. He wants you closer.

“Diego…” You’re unravelling. You’re fucking unravelling, unnerved by his voice and his hands and you’re putty in them, all inhibitions sliding away like you’re three drinks in. His hands by your sides leave their marks against your skin; you can feel the pads of his fingers, burning into your skin like they were molten iron and not just mere brushes. “I...”

“Tell me.” He sounds cocky. He has a right to be, even if you’re damned to admit it. “Tell me what you think.”

Your hands shiver up his forearms, clinging to his bare shoulders as he pulls you impossibly closer. Your mind’s going a mile a minute and you refuse to listen to a single thought. You’re only feeling him.

“Y/N…”

“Fine,” you huff, with a smile. Your noses brush again; your eyes flutter shut with his image imprinted against their lids. “I think you look...hot as hell, Diego.”

“Yeah.” He’s grinning; you can hear it in his voice, that smirk that makes your gut flip like a damn rollercoaster ride. “S’what I thought, baby.”

And then he kisses you.

My tires come to a near screeching halt as I hastily pull into the lot in front of Ethan and Grayson’s house. I put the car in park and quickly do away with my seat belt, grabbing all of my essentials that are within reach and all but throwing myself from the car and shutting the driver’s side door with my hip. I can only hope that the boys are home as I approach their front door.

I had texted them about an hour ago, asking if they were down to hang out. Surprisingly, I hadn’t gotten a response from either of them. But, I chalked that up to them maybe filming for a video. Seeing their cars in the driveway now more or less confirms that theory. I had figured that if I showed up anyways and happened to arrive while they were shooting, I’d just chill out until they were done. Keeping this in mind, I knock lightly on the front door, careful to keep my noise to a minimum.

I wait for a few long seconds, tapping my foot somewhat impatiently. It occurs to me suddenly that there’s a spare key under the doormat and I don’t wait much longer before I’m bending over to retrieve it. I allow a few seconds more of a grace period before I jam the key into the lock, twisting it with practiced ease and shoving the door open. I tiptoe in and quietly withdraw the key from the door, pushing it to a gentle close behind me before walking a few strides to the living room and setting down all of the junk that I brought from the car on the nearest surface.

“Grayson?” I call out, shrugging off my jacket and letting it blanket my belongings on the couch. A few seconds pass with no response, save for the sound of music playing in the distance. It seems to be coming from the direction of the bedrooms. I roll my eyes, kicking off my shoes.

“E?” I try instead, once again, to no avail. I exhale through my nose, following the the music to its source, which appears to be Grayson’s room. I hum along to the music as I get closer to his door, tapping my fingers rhythmically onto my thigh before lightly twisting the doorknob and pushing the door open ahead of me.

“Hi - “ I begin, only to stop abruptly in my tracks, the air whooshing out of my lungs and my mouth hanging open around unspoken words. My greeting falls on deaf ears. Four pairs of deaf ears, to be exact. The scene unfolding before me includes a naked Grayson, nether regions obscured by the girl that’s fully sheathed on his length. Her features are impossible for me to decipher in my haze; all I can see is that she has long, honey blonde hair that’s messy from clearly strenuous activity. She’s laying on her back, taking every punishing stroke that Grayson delivers into her. He’s glistening with sweat, hard pecs prominent under the sticky sheen. His stomach visibly flexes with each roll of his hips.

Next to them is an equally naked Ethan, except he’s sitting with his back resting against the headboard, a brunette girl grinding sensually on his lap. Her palms are resting on the wall behind the bed and I vaguely register Ethan’s large hands cradling her, running up and down her back. Now that the door is open, I can clearly hear the sounds of grunting and groaning and moaning and creaking bed springs over the music that I heard from the living room.

“Oh!” I exclaim reflexively, still unable to look away. It’s like watching a train wreck. And speaking of train wrecks, I’m pretty sure that something equally destructive is happening in the depths of my stomach. It’s like two holes open up, one in my chest and one in my gut, as I watch my boys fuck into the nameless girls. At the sound of my exclamation, all movement comes to a halt. Grayson makes eye contact with me first. He looks like he’s seen a ghost.

“Shit! I didn’t know you were,” he trails off uselessly, gaping repeatedly like a fish out of water, “when did you get here?” he settles on instead. I find myself physically unable to answer and, as we continue our intense eye contact, it dawns on me that I should probably look away or something out of courtesy. I decide to slap a hand over my eyes. There’s silence for a considerable length of time, the previously drowned-out music now the only noise consuming the five of us.

“Fuck, I thought you had work until 8,” comes Ethan’s familiar voice after a moment, tinged with shock and maybe a little bit of panic. My throat feels too dry to even produce much sound at the moment, but I give it a shot nonetheless.

“I got off early,” I respond meekly, realizing much too late that my choice of words is more than ironic in the current situation.

“Who is she?” I hear a female voice chime in this time and I almost visibly startle, suddenly remembering that the boys and I aren’t the only people in the room.

“Is she gonna join us?” the other girl asks and, by this time, I’m absolutely numb. Before the questions can advance, I interject.

“I’ll see myself out, I just. Sorry. Shit, sorry. I’ll just be,” I gesture behind me, not even sure with my temporary lack of sight if I’m motioning in the correct direction, “I’ll go.” I finally splutter out before removing my hand from my eyes, but keeping them closed as I grab wildly for the doorknob and pull the door shut with a resounding click. Once I open my eyes back up, I hastily spin on my heel and move as fast as my bare feet can carry me back to the living room, gathering my things back up just as quickly as I’d set them down when I arrived.

The sound of Grayson’s bedroom door reopening gets drowned out in my near-frantic haste to slip my shoes back on and force my arms back into the jacket that I’d previously shrugged off. I scan the couch for anything I might have missed, eyes too glazed over at this point to truly register my surroundings. I’m so hyper focused on making my escape that I jump at feeling a hand on my shoulder. I plaster on what I hope to be a look of nonchalance before I turn to face two anxious looking twins, both donning nothing but boxers and guilty frowns. Before anything can be said, I watch the blonde and brunette girls sweep through the area, now redressed, looking disheveled and more than a little disgruntled.

They waltz past Ethan and Grayson without so much as a word, implying that they must have been asked to leave, mid-fuck. The front door slams behind them and then, silence. No more music, no more creaking bed springs, no more nothing. I allow my eyes to journey around the room that I’ve seen a million times, scanning over the details as if it’s my first time visiting. Try as I might, I just can’t seem to face the boys; not right now.

“Please say something,” comes Grayson’s voice lowly after several wordless seconds. And that’s when I feel the telltale pinch behind my eyes. The stinging that follows is accompanied by a flood of tears welling up above my lash line. I bite the inside of my top lip hard enough to leave a harsh indent and leave my eyes watering from physical pain, instead. I clear my throat to no avail, cheeks still warm as my first tear spills. I swipe it away without a second thought, focusing intently on my shoes.

“Babe,” Ethan starts, beginning to walk towards me, but I put a hand up and he stops in his tracks. I take a deep breath in and look up at the boys with already bloodshot eyes. Up close like this, I can see Ethan’s neck and collarbones marred with love bites. Grayson appears to have a particularly prominent mark on his chest. I laugh humorlessly; nothing about this situation is funny.

“Why am I crying?” I ask rhetorically and, as expected, neither boy answers. They seem to be having trouble maintaining eye contact with me now. “You guys can fuck whoever you want, date whoever you want. I’m jealous for no goddamn reason.” I feel myself slowly getting worked up again.

“It’s not fair for me to be acting like this,” I continue, talking to myself more than anyone else at this moment. No one seems to know what else to say, so we stand in tense silence for a moment. I clap my hands together, gaining the boys’ eye contact for the first time since I began my outer monologue. “Well if that’s all,” I begin, leaning down briefly to pick up my keys, “I’m gonna head out.”

“You aren’t staying?” Grayson asks in the smallest voice I’ve ever heard issued from his mouth. His disheveled hair is a nasty reminder of what I walked in on and my momentary inclination to give in is gone without a trace.

“No, I’m not staying,” I declare, feeling so many emotions that I barely feel anything at all. That’s the last thing that’s spoken before I shuffle toward the front door. “I’ll put your spare key back,” I say without turning around, pulling the door closed in my wake and flipping up the doormat with my foot, dropping the key lazily onto the ground before kicking the mat back into place.

I unlock my car and get back in. The turnaround time between me leaving the car and coming back is so short that the car hasn’t even begun to heat up in the sun yet. I jam my keys into the ignition and start the car up, taking one more deep breath before the tears begin to finally fall at their own will. The strong front that I’d almost totally maintained while inside the boys’ house is a mystery to me, considering that I felt like I was deteriorating from the inside out ever since I set foot into Grayson’s room.

A few shaky, uneven breaths escape me as I peel out of the lot, making a beeline for my own apartment several miles away from here. I don’t bother to wipe my tears as they cascade continuously down my cheeks, knowing that there’s no use. My chest feels tight, a contrast against the empty feeling that had swept through it minutes earlier. When I reach a stoplight, I’m able to glance at the way my hand is fisted so tightly around the steering wheel that it’s beginning to cramp.

I reflect on my misery, justifiable or not. Grayson and Ethan don’t belong to me. They’re their own people and I feel like an idiot, assuming that they would remain celibate until I finally decided to partake in sexual activity with them. I realize that, over the time that I grew as close to them as I am now, I had internally concluded that their only means of pleasure were self-inflicted. The silly little make out sessions that I’d indulged in with the both of them were meaningless.

A part of me had always convinced myself that their kisses and lingering touches and pet names meant something. I had found solace in being their plaything and the title had never felt more fitting than now. I’ve always considered myself to be special in their lives. And maybe I am, in a way. But it was made abundantly clear today that, romantically speaking, I didn’t have a horse in the race.

I subconsciously complete all the right turns and stops until I’m rolling into the parking garage designated for my apartment building. As I swing into a parking spot and stop the car, I come to another crushing realization: neither Grayson nor Ethan has reached out since I left. The silence that they had maintained when I walked out of their house had translated to their lack of text messages or missed calls. Before they have a chance to prove me wrong, I power my phone off and throw it onto my passenger seat as if it had singed my hand. One recurring theme clouds my mind as I stare out of my window:  I was wrong about them. I was wrong about us. I was wrong.

While there are a couple of titles that we'd have swapped out for other, more worthy offerings from Namco's past, you're still getting an excellent selection of games for a reasonable price here. Throw in the new X Challenge mode and an enormous archive of museum content and this stands as the definitive way to play the Mega Man X games in the modern era. Four fantastic games, a bevy of extra content, and the ability to play at home or on the go make this one an easy recommendation. Sure, it’s been ported plenty of times and the jump to Nintendo DS certainly helped shake off the retro cobwebs, but as a piece of interactive history, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is as utterly addictive and truly rewarding as it was back at the turn of the millennium. Whether you’re brand new to the world of virtual defence law or a veteran attorney, Phoenix Wright’s first adventures are still a fine set of cases to undertake. Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch) - Our Review - Profile Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo Release Date: 18th Sep 2020 (USA) / 18th Sep 2020 (UK/EU) We had an absolute blast playing through these three gems all over again, especially now they look sharper than ever. It’s a shame that the presentation is practically barebones with no bonus content beyond the soundtracks, but there can still be no denying the quality of the games on offer here. Super Mario 3D All-Stars is the Beatles’ Greatest Hits of the video game world, and is an absolute treat whether you’re reliving it in HD or discovering it for the first time. BioShock: The Collection (Switch) - Our Review - Profile Publisher: 2K / Developer: 2K Release Date: 29th May 2020 (USA) / 29th May 2020 (UK/EU) BioShock: The Collection stands as yet another fantastic port in the Switch’s ever-growing library, combining three excellent games and all their DLC into one convincing package. Stable performance, engrossing narratives, fun gameplay, and lots of content make this one an easy recommendation, even if these releases show their age from time to time. If you’re looking for a good single-player shooter to pick up for your Switch, look no further - it’s tough to go wrong here. Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle (Switch eShop) - Our Review - Profile Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom Release Date: 18th Sep 2018 (USA) / 18th Sep 2018 (UK/EU) The Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle illustrates perfectly why the humble side-scrolling fighter was the toast of video gaming in the late '80s and early '90s. Addictive, enjoyable and – perhaps most important of all – bloody good fun when played co-operatively with friends, all of the titles in this seven-strong compendium are worth your time, and by adding robust local and multiplayer support, Capcom has done its utmost to ensure they find favour with a whole new generation of gamers.
