Adam Driver celebrated his 40th birthday last month. And looks better than ever. Like Harrison Ford and Hugh Jackman, he's maturing like a fine wine!

Meanwhile...it will be exactly four years this month that Kylo Ren/Ben Solo faded into the Force and took my four decades plus love of the SW franchise with him.

As a woman in her fifties, I'm too old to 'fall in love' with another franchise. And I intend to avoid ANY Disney products in future, another franchise that I loved as a little girl, because they are no longer entertaining but promoting what I see as a highly toxic agenda.

The more I see of Adam's performance in the ST the more I simply cannot believe Disney did what they did to him. His outstanding portrayal of the broken Ben Solo dominated the entire trilogy. The others gave good performances but Adam was sensational - only matched by Mark Hamill in TLJ, both of them easily as good as some I've seen win Oscars - and better than some of the said winners.

The way they treated him in TROS was diabolical.

That whole mess of a film was from start to finish just a two hour plus promotion of how great Rey's character is, and how we must all WORSHIP her, as the rest of the cast did.

Unfortunately it had exactly the opposite effect on me.

I have completely lost all interest in Star Wars. I don't want to watch any of the spin offs. As for further Rey adventures to quote 'frumfrumfroo' ...you couldn't pay me to watch them. Especially if Boyega is in them after his treatment of Loan Tran and his behaviour on twitter.

His fans tediously drone on about hard done by he was in the ST, but he had far more screen time than Adam. Heck, all three of the Trio did - despite Poe and Finn being the supporting characters (no, 'J' of the JCF, Finn was not meant to be 'Black male lead' as you told me before getting me banned). Finn was conceived as a supporting player right from the start.

Adam was playing the last descendant of the OT heroes. He shouldn't have just had a major role, the entire saga should have been HIS story. Not that of a rogue stormtrooper. Not that of a Han clone pilot.

And certain not that of the daughter of a failed Palpatine clone.

Adam's behaviour has been a masterclass in dignity since aTROSity. No ranting on twitter. No moaning about hos 'hard done by' he was. Domhnall Gleeson and Loan Tran have been equally classy, with Domhnall making just one lighthearted joke about his shameful abrupt exit at the beginning of TROS(he SHOULD have been Big Bad) and Loan making no complaint over her truly racist erasure from TROS (she was a MAJOR character for crying out loud.) The three of them deserved better.

As Kylo/Ben did. As Hux did. As Rose Tico did.

As anyone who truly loved SW did.

They let every single one of us down.

And I am so very sorry for Rian Johnson, whose beautiful film was the most critically acclaimed of all three and who reacted to it's brutal retcon with good humour, joining its three stars in class.

Friday, 12/23:Had my friend, Dana's birthday and honestly, was just really tired.

She cried in the car about multiple things

Tuseday, 12/27: I had lunch with Marie and we talked things out regarding how we felt about each other. We're friends again.

Was having some mix emotions regarding one of my friend's, Mae because we've never been close and it's just making me feel some type of way.

Friday, 12/30: had dinner with my college friends which was cool.

Saturday, 12/31: went out to a DJ show in NY with Mae and her boyfriend. It was fun.

Sunday, 01/01: Hung out with boo thang. That's it.

Overall, just been applying to jobs and internships. I had two interviews last week. One with a financial firm, I believe they're based in London, but they have offices in New York and Dubai and that was the hardest interview of my life.

Somehow, I got into the second round and had to do a case study and never done that before, but I did it and didn't make it to the 3rd round interview, but it's whatever.

And then the other interview was with a talent managment agency based on the west coast. Which was not for a marketing internship, but for an event coordinator internship. Which was cool, but its only commission based.

And then yesterday, I had an interview with a entertainment tech company, also based in the west coast. This is only credits. But they're funded by Hugh Jackman and Margot Robbie. But I am leaning towards either this one or the talent management one. I think at this point, I'm not gonna get paid for what I want so I'm probably going to take up a part time job in the meantime.

I got a couple rejection emails, but we can't win everyone right?

The Music Man on Broadway with Hugh Jackman & Sutton Foster (Review)

If you do not wish to be spoiled for a 60 year old musical or don’t wish to read about me gushing over it, do not proceed.

For everyone else, let’s dive in

First a little back story. I believe it was sometime in early 2019 that it was announced that Hugh Jackman would be starring in a revival of The Music Man on Broadway. Now, that is not one of my favorite musicals, but I had already been regretting not going to see Hugh during his north American concert tour, so I was like: hell yes. Not too long after that it was announced that the female lead would be Sutton Foster, who is very notable in the Broadway community (she has won 2 Tony awards for best actress). I’m not a huge fan of her voice, but I was still all-in for Hugh.

The show was scheduled to open in August of 2020 and when tickets went on sale in Sept of 2019, I bought a pair for the third week of performances because it was around my birthday.

And then...well, we all know what happened in 2020. Broadway shut down in March with no opening date in sight. So...we waited, and waited, and waited, through 3 sets of rescheduled dates until FINALLY the show was supposed to open in December 2021. And it did! for one week! and then everyone in the cast got Omicron and they shut down for 2 weeks. 

But finally after all that time I was able to go and see the show and, guys, it was worth every second of waiting.

For those unfamiliar with the show, the premise is that a con man who travels from city to city swindling people out of their money is currently going by the name Professor Harold Hill. His current con: pretending to be a band leader, selling instruments and uniforms to unsuspecting families and then leaving town before he gets caught because, of course, he cannot actually lead a band. He goes to Iowa to run his latest scheme and tries to win over all the townspeople, including the music teacher slash librarian, Marian Paroo. Singing, dancing, and comedy follow.

This adaptation was pretty close to the original. They changed some of the lyrics to one of the songs “Shipoopi” (the originals are no longer PC) and they added a lot of dancing, and an “epilogue” scene i guess we could call it (which in reality was just an excuse to have Hugh & Sutton tap dance) but otherwise it stayed pretty true to its quirky origins (Yee Gods!)

Now I do feel like I can be a bit of a Broadway snob. (I think this was the 12th show I’ve seen on B-way, not including musicals/plays I’ve seen elsewhere) So some of my comments may be a bit nitpicky fyi haha

Hugh was, overall, absolutely incredible & amazing. I do think that he struggled a bit with the talk-singing songs like Trouble in River City and the beginning of 76 Trombones. I kind of half wonder if that was due to the accent he was putting on, which was inconsistent at times. When he sang-sang songs in the second act it was much better, but I could also hear a little Aussie coming through so it was probably more his natural singing voice. 

Insofar as dancing & general performance though - Hugh was utterly amazing. He’s so funny and SUCH AN AMAZING DANCER OMG. 

I thought Sutton Foster was mostly good in the role of Marian. Acting wise she was great. She and Hugh played off each other fantastically. In fact there were 2 scenes that they both laughed during when they shouldn’t have. One during “Marian the Librarian” and another right before “Til There Was You”. In the second instance, Marian is mad because another salesman who is trying to get Hill in trouble tells Marian that Hill has a girl in every town so she’s mad at him, but Hill (not knowing what she’s mad about) reminds her that people aren’t always truthful and she has this huge revelation that the salesman could have been lying to turn her against Hill and when she realizes this she gives Hill a really big shove and boy did she ever go for it-- she almost knocked him over haha.

The song I liked the least was definitely “My White Knight.” You can find the lyrics here but basically she sang the end bit more like a threat than a romantic notion haha. it was just a little harsh in my opinion.

But the climactic scene at the footbridge (”Til There Was You”) when Hill discovers that Marian has known the truth (that he’s not a professor) all along was A++++++ so incredibly well done. 

Also i wanted to say that the little boy who plays Winthrop (Marian’s little brother) was FANTASTIC. This kid was probably only 6-7 years old and he absolutely killed it.

But overall, I absolutely loved this. It was funny and fun and carefree and had so much amazing, incredible dancing that I want to go back and experience it all again.

listening got some money, by bill wurtz. hello it’s a tuesday show

reading fallow week, bc i don’t have anything more interesting to say than “hey here’s another six-issue comic book limited series with a cool concept but atrocious execution and an author/artist combo who have never interacted with a real human woman before”

watching Steel Dawn (1987, dir Hool, free on tubi rn) movies that are under two hours my beloved. this is the exact sort of schlocky eighties post-apoc movie my brain needed right now. utter nonsense. loved it. big cowboy-western water baron vibes on this one (literally just 1953′s Shane but post-apoc), with added bonus of lots of fucking around with scrap metal and machinery. mwah. catnip to me, personally.

don’t know that it’s a good film or achieves all its plot beats in a coherent manner but it was fun to turn my brain off for a little bit. the dialogue is. whoo boy. the dialogue is your typical eighties b-movie dialogue.

can’t find that article right now about how hugh jackman’s wolverine is the best example of the start of a profoundly unhealthy and unachieveable male body type in film, but action movie dudes pre-whenever the first wolverine came out distress me less- mr swayze in this film is a large buff man, but he doesn’t look dehydrated he just looks like a regular dude who does physical labor for a living. i just think it’s nice when dudes have a healthy cushioning layer of fat to protect their abdominal muscles and internal organs

the okay: it’s not rapey! the female lead, a widow, has her husband’s old army friend working her farm as her right hand man but he’s not weird and overprotective about it, the other dudes on the farm are respectful, everyone’s drinking their respect women juice. even the villain is angrier about her plans for water sharing more than the fact she’s a woman.  also there are CARCASSES of SAILING SHIPS in the DESERT. because i am the person i am this made me raise my glass of gatorade above my head and hoot like a fuckin tusken raider

the weird: there’s a brief scene with some prostitutes who are getting ready for the night (i know) but they way they are chatting says they’re independent and respected which is cool. really wish we didn’t get that full frontal nudity weird voyeuristic scene tho

the bad: there is a japanese swordmaster (unsure how i feel about this trope in this context i need to do some more reading) anyway he’s the one cool non-white person with more than two speaking lines and dies in the first five minutes of the film. as with most post-apoc, this is a white settler colonialist fantasy about reclaiming the savage wasteland. the baddies’ gang is...i’m hesitant to say middle-eastern coded, bc their headdresses aren’t quite like a shemagh or a keffiyeh, but i am. concerned. 

playing my post-work routine is now dinnerdishescallsibling and then collapse and play stardew valley while listening to podcasts. we’re now in winter 2 and i am mildly cranky bc i have not Perfectly Optimized this fun game for funsies and i can’t finish the community center until summer (depending on if the cart and/or krobus are randomly selling the correct three fish and one fiddlehead fern and also three apples) bc again i do not feel like the fishing minigame is the most enjoyable aspect of the game for me. HOWEVER. i am building a stable. stay tuned

making did not take a better pic before i sent it off, but here’s one of the patches in the trio i’m making for my sister’s birthday. i have got to figure out a easier way to make patches that also looks nice but idk if it’s possible without buying a serger, which i do not have room for in this apartment. maybe if i get iron-on backing that’ll stabilize the edges enough? the issue is that coarsely woven aida cloth doesn’t really want to cooperate even when drenched in fraychek, the duct tape of the sewing world.

She knows he doesn't like surprises so she tells him she's planning him a party, this date, this time, but everything else will be a surprise


She tells him to trust her and... Ricky does


But Ricky also doesn't really like his birthday or parties for him 


(they make him feel awkward and uncomfortable and anxious) 


So Gina plans the party for the day before his birthday so it's an UN-birthday party 


(If it happens to go until past midnight so it technically IS his birthday... well... no one needs to draw attention to that)


So it's not a birthday party....


So it's a Ricky party 


It's at Ashlyn's because of course it is


Gina plans all sorts of activities to also take the pressure off of it being a birthday 


They decorate cupcakes


(Gina got the recipe for Ricky's favorite cake from his mom - it was a whole thing) 


They've got karaoke


Kourtney sets up a "photo booth" (an ipad with a light ring) 


and no one is allowed to say "happy birthday" at the party


Everyone's cupcake gets a candle and they light them and blow them out together


The party has pizza from Slices because that's Rickys fave food


Gina and Ashlyn would have a great time crafting decorations


(There is also a craft station at the party)


There is a charades tournament 


Names are picked at random for teams


EJ and Ricky are partnered up and end up winning


Like its not even close - they're just same-brain all the way


There's choosical re-dosical


It's like the 10th redosical but no one cares


Carlos has created SO many new questions 


He even watched hsm2 and 3 to use that for material, which catch everyone off guard because no one was prepared 


Except Ricky, who watched the whole trilogy several times during HSM for character study


Nini's like "you couldn't sit through ONE movie with Hugh Jackman for me but you watched ALL THREE HSM movies REPEATEDLY on your own??"


Ricky's like "to be fair... i rewatched the greatest showman. it deserved more than what i gave it the first time"


Nini has to leave the room to calm down


other than that, it's a very good party


At the stroke of midnight, Gina pulls Ricky away to give him his gift ans whisper "happy birthday" to him


Ricky tells her its his best birthday yet
