Hey Ray, I’m here with my monthly dose of Undertale gushing 😅Even if you never play the game itself, I feel like it’d be really worth it to listen to the soundtrack. You can find it on Spotify (which I’d recommend instead of Youtube because just searching for the songs there might reveal a few spoilers in the thumbnails) and truly the creator of the game Toby Fox outdid himself with that one. The video above is my favorite cover of one of the absolute fan-favorite tracks; Megalovania, which plays during the climax of a Genocide run. But that’s not to say the other tracks are bad, far from it! Hopes and Dreams, Battle Against a True Hero, Bonetrousle, Death by Glamour, and Spider Dance are 5 other songs that are very beloved, but I’m holding myself back from listing like 10 other tracks which I believe are just as good. 

(Btw the video says it may contain spoilers at the start but I watched it and couldn’t find any, so either there aren’t any or they’re too subtle for even me, with my extreme undertale obsession, to notice at first glance. So you probably don’t have to worry about it😊)

Something I really admire about this soundtrack is its ability to convey emotion. It can make you feel joy, fun, hope, hype, anticipation, serenity, sympathy, playfulness, courage, sadness and even honest to god fear or dread at times, an effect that is magnified tenfold when they’re paired with their in-game scenario. The way Toby handled parts of the soundtrack during a Genocide route in particular (as well as some specific events during other routes) is a masterful exercise in building tension and constructing a creepy atmosphere that not many non-horror games I’ve played have been able to match.

I myself have about half the soundtrack downloaded to all my devices so I can listen to it whenever, it’s so good. My personal favorite is the track that bears the game’s name, because of the magnificent way it slowly builds and because of how it makes me feel every time I hear it in-game. However, there is no universal “best” song as far as I know, because so many of them are so good there is no clear consensus on which is superior. You should give it a listen sometime, I promise you won’t regret it 😊
