“The radios won’t last us much longer, so just—stay safe out there, Buckley.”

The radio crackles back almost immediately, “don’t I always?”

Eddie shakes his head, glad that no one is around to see the embarrassingly fond smile on his face, “I’m serious, be careful, it feels worse today.”

“Aye, aye, boss.”

Eddie can picture the ridiculous little salute he’s sure Buck is doing wherever he is, and his heart aches a little that he can’t be out there with him.

The feeling gets all the worse when his brain reminds him that if something does go wrong, he probably won’t know until hours afterwards, when it would be far too late for him to do anything.

“Hey Buck?”

It’s a shot in the dark, the estimates on the radio signals have them pushing the boundaries.

It’s a long minute before the radio crackles again, and Eddie can’t help the sigh of relief when it does.

“Yeah, Eds?”

His words are riddled with static and the moment of relief is sucked away.

“Just—come back in one piece, alright? For—for Chris, and—for me.”

The response comes back in static and crackles, and Eddie’s heart sinks when the radio cuts out completely.
