I'm gonna froth at the mouth over this in the tags so bear with me but reason #1278038 why the way rick went about breaking up jiper was bad: rereading her povs in hoo where she gushes over jason feels like even more of an unreliable narrator queer girl comphet psychological horror story
#it's not that that isn't interesting (it's fascinating actually. especially for a daughter of aphrodite!!!)#it's that it Obviously wasn't his og intention. the ending of hoo is clearly intended to give a positive impression of jiper#this is worsened because shelper is wildly underdeveloped so it's like Dude what did you even do this for#literally just an afterthought. a footnote really. he said “ok here's your canon sapphic rep pls stop shipping theyna now” /j#she was a main character in one of the main couples in hoo it's so crazy? how can that happen. he would never do this to percabeth#can you imagine if percabeth broke up offscreen and 2 months later annabeth was with some complete rando and then percy died. girl what#it's the kind of setup/payoff issue that is difficult to put into words because he set up something (jiper and all its complex morality)#to ultimately be good because they're making the choice to love each other in the end (poorly executed but whatever I don't hate it)#and then in toa????? he just obliterates them for no payoff and creates a new impression of the most literal case of comphet imaginable? wh#toa is my absolute least favorite sorry#marginally related but if we can Be. Chill. and acknowledge that he originally wrote nico as crushing on annabeth#(we can argue all day about how Definite the crush was but come on. he did not put percy's speculation of it in there for no reason)#(and he obviously did not plan for nico to be gay back then you will literally never convince me of this)#(representation was NOT on his mind in the first 5 books that's why the cast is almost completely white except charles and ethan)#(the disposable poc who die tragically btw)#then I see a similarly confusing debacle but like. in the opposite way#something something sexuality is fluid you can be gay and feel confused about how u used to have a het crush but are still gay#nico says so himself to piper which is hilarious#it's just the lack of consistency and poor planning that I hate........... it is a ginormous pet peeve of mine and it's All Over His Books#piper already reads as having so much growing to do regarding her gender and sexuality because Somebody#(the man writing her) littered her pov with internalized misogyny/anti hyperfemininity and went nowhere with it#rr crit#percy jackson and the olympians#piper mclean#jason grace#pjo hoo toa#anti jiper#<- I PROMISE I am not actually anti-jiper I am very neutral about it as I am with all jason ships. they had cute moments#tagging that just in case#this comes from a place of deep love for the franchise and it's characters btw I have been a fan since I was 8

Not me debating writing an Aventio fic based on a book I really loved... urgh-
I got Aven recently and just finished his arc in Penacony and I am incredibly bored! I wanna write while I have the energy...
Lemme know if I should :p
Basic premise is its based on a book called Written In Red, which I feel absolutely fits Aventurine??? Look at the book first, give it a read, and tell me the main character doesn't remind you of him. I will go feral.
Anyways if you don't, the premise of the book is that the main character, a blood prophet who is also a slave, escapes and runs away from captivity to a town in order to hide and live amongst sentient predators called "Others", basically ancient as fuck monsters that can swap between animal and human forms. Others actually do prey on humans, but it's modern times and they have a begrudging agreement to coexist with humans because they make decent stuff that the Others can't create. The main character ends up living among them and figures out herself, while also teaching the Others some new things. It's actually a nice book in my opinion.
I'd have to reread the book but yeah. That would be the very basic idea. I already have a character list of who is who lmao.
I wouldn't make it a carbon copy of the book though, not with the characters I have in mind, but it would be a similar plot at least. Consider giant wolf Ratio, everybody, that's all I'm giving you.
So...
EDIT: Holy crap that's like 50 people and it hasn't even been a day-
Here you go ya feral bastards jesus-
Warnings for gore, violence, blood, people get torn apart and eaten you have been warned. (Can only be viewed if you have an account)
Enjoy
#hsr#aventio#ratiorine#honkai star rail#should i write it or not? honestly leaning for it but also ive never written for hsr...#mind you i have a good idea of the personalities but dear god how am i gonna write Ratio correctly??#dude has the kind of long ass monologuing speech that puts me to sleep the way my mom does#i love ratio to bits but also i want to shake him and tell him to talk NORMALLY PLEASE#aventurine will be SO fun to write tho- vibrating as we speak bc i am going to torture this man a lil more#theyre my fave ship currently- also we underestimate acheron/aven friendship#adding on the fact that the original characters in the book kinda fit too and i really dont have to do too much lmaoooo#also jesus fuckign christ 30 votes for hell yeah in an hour??? fuck it ill write it holy-#ill try to get through most of the book before i post anything bc i am editing and adding and changing a bunch of crap from the book i hate#im not shying from the gore tho. its a gory book#warning yall now bc there will be graphic violence tags and people being eaten and not in the fun way

The Hunger Games succeeds (and more so achieves sort of mythic effect) because it approaches dystopia through the timeless-- it (and Ballad) brings these universal ideas to a very personal lens and asks questions like "how do we begin to excuse evil in our lives" or "how do you hold on to goodness in the midst of oppression". And because it is so invested in the transcendent it lends itself to very powerful symbols, which give it that mythic feel.
Orwell's books (Animal Farm and 1984) both succeed through a very different approach to dystopia (Animal Farm isn't really a dystopia in the traditional sense but it has a lot of the elements). Orwell succeeds through real perceptive insight into the inner mechanisms of the subjects of his critiques. Orwell has vision that can cut deep into the way that things like propaganda or 'controlling the narrative' work and then, having dissected them, hold those tactics up for all to see.
And I think a lot of dystopias fall short because they get tangled up in the Idea of their story. The "what if" they've created. Either focused too much on the Issue-- too narrowly to be universal, too broadly to be revealing-- or too disconnected from anything genuine. And because they get stuck at that particular point they don't have much more to offer than "wouldn't this be bad?" And if you get a pretty good writer they can make that feel insightful but really it doesn't have much more to offer than whatever absurd YA book comes to mind first when you hear "bad dystopian novel".
#wouldn't this be bad' books (in terms of concept) really hinges on how valid the concept is#as a reflection of actual problems#because like with divergent (divergent I love you. they could never make me hate you.) the probably is really that the concept is#A. ill-defined and B. pretty far divorced from any real problem#(even granting that in dystopias in general we're dealing with hyperbole)#So if you compare it to something like Uglies#as far as how good they are as a dystopia uglies is more effective because there is a much clearer more real critique present#(though I think overall divergent is at the very least a more enjoyable book.)#but anyway actually the core of this post is not about which ya dystopias work and which don't#actually this post is about why I think handmaid's tale doesn't work for me and actually has very little of value to offer#because deep down I think that all it has to say is 'wouldn't it be bad if we made all women sex slaves?#the hunger games#1984#animal farm#and the quality of the and. yeah dude. that would be bad#and none of this is to hold either hunger games or the orwell books up as like perfect books#i love hunger games but its flawed#and as a STORY I don't think 1984 is particularly effective#but as dystopias I think they are exemplary#and there's a reason they have the staying power that they do

regretfully this is me seeing any modern interpretation of greek mythology now
#tumblr fyp has given me some great fanart but i don’t know if i like the medias its coming from lol#getting mad about ‘mischaracterization’ but it’s like about like ancient epics is somehow funny to me#euripides & cdpr = ‘yeah its fanfiction ok but it’s really good fanfiction so we choose to accept it’#the elbow-high diaries#edit: i said ‘ok dont get mad at it until you actually look at the full lyrics’#looked at it. got more pissed. my gut feeling was correct#stop purposefully misinterpreting homer to suit modern narratives 2k24!!#you didn’t even get the symbolism right??#you’re marvelizing the poem noooooo#dude why are my two book interests like homer and sapkowski when no one reads either and then does whatever the fuck they want#i feel like these problems could be solved by getting off tumblr and going to get a masters instead

our least honorable regulars tend to come and go, and it depends on their age or how many disruptive children they have or if they're just passing through. Map Lady only stayed a few months but she gave us years worth of annoyances. but our MOST honorable regular is easy. he is a man named geoffrey who is sixty years old and deeply deeply deeply autistic and when he comes in the building i know i'm going to have a pleasant interaction and even when i am incredibly grouchy and bitchy i can see geoffrey and its like yippee a real patron has arrived. i love geoffrey. so does everybody else. he doesn't do anything in particular to be beloved but he is the mildest mannered man on the planet with only one flaw which is an unfortunate disdain for kleenexes, although for all the sniffling i WILL say he is a ready hand with the sanitizer. he reads largely music biographies and has a set of about twelve sentences for regular conversation, some of which are just echolalia material. when you chat with geoffrey you know exactly what you're going to get, which is one of the most refreshing parts of having him come in on a busy or unsettling day. the exception to his catalogue of stock phrases is when he is sharing actor/musician birthday and death day trivia. he always brings his books back on time and he always says "i always bring them back on time" and we say thank you we love that about you. and he says "sorry to keep coming in like this" and we say please do not apologize for being the best part of our day every day. we love you. geoffrey <3
#he has one of those very fast monotone speech patterns so new employees always struggle to understand him at first#but once you get in the geoffrey zone he is immediately recognizable as a cool dude with cool interests#he's a guy with some pretty high support needs but he's thriving in his middle age and he's clearly had support all his life in this way#which makes me fond of his family who ive never met. that they are good to him. and its a privilege to be a small part of that system#we know what books he likes and when an old favorite of his has been read too many times and he's the only one who reads it#we delete it from the system and he can take it to keep#and you BET your ass. if somebody famous dies. he will be in that day to tell you how old they were and how it happened#the exception recently he has no idea who liam payne is or whether he's alive. his musical interests don't extend past the early nineties#anyway he's a cool dude always walking around town sometimes reading on the lawn of the old high school#works at the tool factory part time. goes to his mom's house for christmas . his dad was a music professor

Tony Becker is one of the only times that I've seen that a character has actually been doomed by the plot when people say he is
#i probably just am not interested in enough other things to see it more often#but he genuinely fucking is#like how does it feel to dig yourself in a hole you cant come back from as a result of your own actions#and your life going downhill and everything that could go wrong going wrong#and you isolate yourself more and more from your friends and family without even realizing and are so sure of uourse#that you run into everything headfirst not ever thinking that you could ever get hurt even though your dad warned you#and you died from your best friend because of ir#that you were considering ditching everyone else for#like dude.#ggy genuinely is such a good book tony as a character is so well written#its such a tragic story in every sense of the word#every part of that book and all its characters are tragic#tony especially is because gregory beinf mind controlled is off screen#but tony is just. wow ur kinda a shitty person but wholly unaware of it#but the people on your life kinda failed you alongside you failing yourself#so he never even got the time of day to be wrong and aware of it and learn from it#nobody ever cared or was able to tell him that so he could start improving#nope. he died and his family and his best friend have to live with that not ever knowing what happened to him#and ellis' two best friends probably go missing at the same time and he just has to move on#like damn its such a good story#pandas.txt#tony#ggy#thoughts

"The series will reportedly set Wilde’s 1891 tale of the impossibly beautiful Dorian amidst the contemporary beauty industry and will recast the main character and artist Basil Hallway as siblings."
you have to be kidding me you can't do this to oscar wilde. and you can't do this to me
#original nonsense#personal#literally that haunting of hill house show made eleanor and theodora siblings so they couldnt have any homoerotic tension.#okay dude. whatever i just wont watch it who cares. but you're gonna do this to famous gay novel by famous gay author oscar wilde??#ur gonna sibling-ify famous gay people from the famous gay book? from the famous gay author?#its not even out or anything (no joke intended) so im sure they have a chance to prove themselves#and make a good adaptation but they also might not and i probably wont watch it regardless!#just bc im more of a movie guy than a show guy.#idec about the beauty industry thing like that can be cool. but whaaaaaat......#i think hill house makes me mad cuz its not like theres a lot of film adaptations of it anyways lol.#the gay tension of nellie and theo was important to me and i hate the idea that ppl like.. wont understand it bc of the show.#edit: HIS NAME IS HALLWARD NOT HALLWAY LOL
