ok one more thing about only friends bc i still ponder on it sometimes. ive mentioned the realism of the characters (i.e. you know theres queer people out there like that) but to expand on that it's rly striking to me how they represent a very specific microcosm of queer identity and yet theres still aspects of them that are relatable. like personally i cant relate at all to the sex or romantic aspects of their lives but theres still other things that i have in common with them. like small things like im into old music, i used to go to bar trivia when i was in uni, i had friendships dissolve after realizing i just cant forgive them for certain things, ive struggled a little w alcohol (albeit briefly), etc etc etc. and well maybe that's not necessarily directly linked to queerness, but idk it's at least indicative of a well rounded character i think? that despite how different they are from you theres still parts you can understand and connect to no matter what. like that's humanity. none of us are completely different from anyone else
