Don't chase the rabbit!

Since Anon didn’t specify what they wanted the memory to be of, I’m picking my own memory.

Jessica remembered dying. Well, truly dying, not being turned. She remembered those bright golden eyes, momentarily holding a lie the archangel hadn’t himself believed, softening with absolute despair as the wooden bullet pierced through her heart. Those weeks, those absolutely terrible weeks filled with arguing and torture, all at the hands of Russell Fucking Edgington had come to and end. From what she’d understood, the ancient vampire had paid dearly.

That wasn’t the part of the memory she treasured, though. 

Jessica knew she wasn’t supposed to get into Heaven. Even if she were human, half of the things she’d done would’ve warranted her a basket straight down with her name on it. Gabriel and Michael had pulled some strings, though. Making friends with angels seemed to have its benefits. 

She wasn’t sure how long she’d been spending her afternoons lying out under the sun on her granna’s front yard, her own little slice of paradise granting her all the apple pie and playing with her sister, when Gabriel appeared. When the two of them first met he’d held the weight of the world on the tip of his wings, hardly giving to the emotional anchor that dragged his heart down. Now, though, she saw the sadness, saw the pain. 

He’d insisted he wasn’t supposed to interact with the memories, something about it not being his right. But that warm Louisiana afternoon they both got something they’d never had: A family meal that didn’t end in blood. They played the piano and danced with the family members that had long since been left behind. 

They laid together out by the lake that hadn’t been too far away that night. In the warm quiet of the evening they discussed bringing her back to flesh and blood, the benefits of staying here, the fact that she only had one real memory to visit. Eventually they fell just as quiet as the night was. 

Even though her prayers hadn’t been answered, even though she’d been so sure the angels didn’t care. He proved her wrong. And she missed him terribly.
