2024 New Music Releases I Loved
It's that time of year again! Here's the list I've kept all year of brand new music that I adored throughout 2024, so nobody can tell you that there’s no new alternative music or that alternative music genres are dead. There is SO much good shit; this year has radically altered my music listening with the innumerable mind blowing releases. And realistically I’m well aware that this is barely even beginning to scratch the surface. This is just the stuff I personally listened to, but I know I’m missing TONS of stuff.
Purple text means it was a favorite of the year, but that doesn't mean I don't love the non-purple ones (they wouldn’t be listed if I didn’t recommend them!). It just means I haven't spent as much time with them, and/or they didn't shape my year in quite the same way as the purple ones did :)
Genres are being used pretty loosely to give broad ideas, don’t get too hung up on them.

And finally, my personal top five albums of the year out of all of these:
5: CD Ghost's Vignette II — Dreamy, bright, and so nostalgic while still sounding very very now. Just kind of a perfect EP to be honest. "Constellations" is one of my favorite songs to come out this entire year.
Tumblr media
4: tassel's A SACRIFICE: UNTO IDOLS — Like no other. I was able to witness one of the best shows I've ever seen, period. from this band earlier this year. So much style, coolness, and energy, with a fresh, heavy sound. Literally nobody is doing it like them. Meshing classic gothic rock, industrial, and power noise into one unrelenting nightmare album.
Tumblr media
3: Profit Prison's GILT— Sleeper hit favorite for me. I had never even heard of Profit Prison until this year but this album is just so good from start to finish. Fallen asleep to it on long bus rides numerous times; it somehow has both a fun high energy quality and a sort of wistful melancholy. Super timeless, consistent, and pretty. Kinda can't get enough of it.
Tumblr media
2: IAMX's Fault Lines2 — Was waiting for this one and it did not disappoint. I will fucking die on the hill that Chris Corner's recent outputs have been some of the best of his entire career. With irregular beats, heaviness, experimentation, modular synth, some of his best vocal performances, this album has, like, everything. "Neurosymphony" was my most listened to song this year, and "Infinite Fear Jets" and "Conflict Medication" are also two of my favorite things to come out of this year. But really, the whole album is just to die for. Incredible work as ALWAYS.
Tumblr media
1: TR/ST's Performance — Album of the year. Performance is a perfect album. You kind of just need to hear it for yourself, start to finish, to believe it. A perfectly captured snapshot of the very end of a doomed relationship and all of the heartbreak, grief, relief, and regret that follow. I kind of don't have much else to say on this one. Experience it for yourself. TR/ST's magnum opus. Angel told me to say it's his Norman Fucking Rockwell!. The best single album to come out of this year for me. Instant classic in every way.

Well, Schlossberg just confirmed they don't see what happened to Robby this season as sexual assault and fans shouldn't either. Isn't it SO great when you have dudebros like them to lecture us on how severely drunk teenagers can consent /s
I would never let a producer in the entertainment industry tell me what is and isn't sexual assault. I mean, when Shirley Temple was twelve years old, she was 'loaned' to another studio for a film and the first thing that happened was, a big Hollywood guy took her into a private office and showed her his naked body (after they had taken away her mother to another office and came on to her). Anything could have happened but I think she did the best thing you can do in such a situation and embarrassed him by howling with laughter. Assault of minors is rampant in the industry, of course they don't want people raising questions about taking sexual advantage of teens. And no, I am not saying Schlossberg himself did but he is part of a culture that still has absolutely no problem with the concept, of course he is echoing those sentiments.
They may not have meant it to be read that way but every writer who thinks they own a story or its interpretation doesn't respect what stories are. Stories are formed and informed by the writer(s) but they are its own beast and affect people in different ways. And when you're ever lucky enough to create something that then inspires others to continue it themselves [Like HE DID!!!], you'll have to live with the fact you never quite own a story. People will take it and reshape it and expand it when they love it enough. Sure, you can say whether or not you agree with an interpretation, you can choose to engage with it or not, but once you send a story out into the world, you're not the only one shaping it anymore. Ask Kamen about the Daniel he'd envisioned. That Danny Webber was an insecure all American kid, not a skinny, sassy Italo-American punk. He had to rewrite it into a musical to get his timid white boy on stage. Authorial intent is not the be all, end all. That doesn't mean that the audience gets to tell the writer what to do, but the writer can as little tell the audience what to do. I'm interested in what writers intend and what they have to say but when it isn't on the page I feel free to disregard it and when it is no one can make me think it's not.
Schlossberg is just some guy. He can tell me what to think but he doesn't control it. As the Germans say: thoughts know no master.

Album Review #55 - L'amour toujours by Gigi D'Agostino
Ah, sadness, the all ever recurring sadness, have you noticed how most dance music is just happy? I mean, naturally, if you are dancing you are happy, you are energetic. But, to be honest, I like dance music that retains that feeling of sadness, not just of sorrow, but also that feeling of wistful thoughts, for some, it could be nostalgia, for others, it could be something they haven't experienced yet, something they are longing for. Okay, actually, despite what I have said just now, there is actually quite a lot of dance music that retains that feeling of sadness, but I don't think there ever was a music genre that properly depicted that sensation of longing in such a romantic way, than Italo Dance.
With the duration of this whole album, it might seem a bit too long, but keep in mind Italo Dance is a singles genre, this album all in all has several remixes of its own songs, alternate versions, and repeats, if anything, I think seeing it as a boxset it is more fitting, a boxset where you can pick the versions you want, make yourself a nice playlist, activate the cross-fade, and enjoy all in all a nice DJ Mix, you can still play it in full, and a lot of the songs might sound similar at times, but if there is something true to the the Italo Dance formula is the ever lasting downcast trance you end up in when you play it. When you play Italo Dance, you are not only listening to it, you are feeling it on every limb, go ahead and try it, slowly move, standing up, sitting down, dancing it is just a fantastic activity, not just when you do it as a coordinated and practiced skill, but as an expression of the soul, I want to move my arms, my shoulders, even if I look silly, even if I am crying and tears are coming from my eyes, I want to move as well and express what I am feeling with my extremities, my head, my skin.
A downbeat, robotic sounding big emotional delivering vocals, a piano carrying the main melody and careful, or sometimes a silly, cute simple synth that sounds more like a sampled horn than anything else, and at the end delicate keyboards that create a flimsy but delicate atmosphere around you. Even songs like The Riddle, as I mentioned in my review of the single, even with its majestic nature, it maintains a feeling of pure optimism, as if you were going into an adventure, and it is beautiful, absolutely beautiful, songs like The Riddle are songs that I want to describe my life with.
Chansons for the Heart doesn't have just a body with energy but also a kind heart and a wishful soul, it is a beautiful filled with brimming passion which I would recommend to anyone with a broken heart to give it a try, if you allow it to, it will make you cry. Oh and there is also a whole bonus disc, but that one is just okay.
8/10 for Chansons of he Heart
5/10 for Beats for the Feet
7/10 for the whole album

Mon Amour
Tumblr media
--prompt from @flashfictionfridayofficial
Anna didn't like how she looked.
The well-ironed cigarette pants held her legs together, though as she stepped across the tiles with her high heels, she landed with an awkward gait. One tumble in the wrong area, and her pants would split open like a wedding veil inside a car. The bohemian top which she found in a vintage store danced with the wind, but the lace ebbing only hovered over her cleavage, bursting out like pomelos from underneath the bustier she added last minute.
Only her silvery eyeshadow, which twinkled like stars and traced themselves to the moon, provided some form of confidence for Anna. With her fine fingers and photos printed and scattered on her bathroom counter, she created a vision which would keep others from looking at her chest.
"Hey, nice makeup!" Claudia called out from the corner, waving her arm and alerting everybody with her layers of charm bracelets. She rushed over to Anna, still trembling and hesitating to get her glimmery jacket off her body.
"Thanks--I did it myself." Anna grabbed onto Claudia's arm, a source of solace admit the Italo-disco and trance. The violet lighting provided a sense of elegance, and at the same time, almost dragged her away in its trance.
"What do you think of this place?"
"I just got here; I don't know what to...expect." A certain breathlessness entered Anna's chest; the oud and rose emanated from her collar only amplified the anxieties. She fiddled with Claudia's hands, hoping that she wouldn't squeeze too hard and break her bones.
Claudia laughed, brushing an auburn lock away from her eyes. "Then expect nothing. Come with me."
Now with her balance, Anna turned her head at the pretty people surrounding her, each adding a fuse to the kindling building up in her chest. When they glanced at her, their diamond eyes only radiated on the streaky periwinkle lighting which painted her face in shades of blue. In contrast to dreams of being the belle of the ball, their presence made her want to collapse in the ever-trembling floor.
"Do you want to meet my friend?" Claudia shouted out, but Anna's lips remained sealed with the taste of dry wine.
"Let me go get him for you!"
As Claudia lost herself in the crowd, Anna hesitated, torn between following her friend and staying within the music. The rising synthesizers made her want to reach for a hand lacquered with cherry red nails, yet the claws also saw her retreat back into the shadows. Dancing to the ecstatic rhythm, she felt a paroxysm of fear build in her lungs, ending in an invisible scream.
A synthesized string section accompanied that piece, and Anna fought the urges to push them away and advance to the next room. Something that would give her a modicum of silence, something that would keep her tongue from drying out. She slid her fingers into her scalp, letting bits of hair fall out and her hands to get oily.
"Anna!" Claudia shouted out from a distance, but the bass pounded the sound out of Anna's periphery. Instead, she rolled her shoulders and rose her fingers up to the ceiling, which turned into a virulent magenta due to the changing light. "Anna!" She heard her name call out again, but it was a mirage, just a mirage.
Until Claudia bumped into her with a gentle force, and introduced her friend. He stared at her with beady eyes and adjusted his hair with an awkward grace, before offering Anna his hand to confirm their acquaintance. Smiling a little, Anna replied, and tried to grab onto him.
"I'll see you later." Claudia told him, before kissing him on the cheek. Anna stood with trembling legs, as she noticed a trail of sparkles where her friend laid her lips. She stared at the light dancing off for a good minute before her friend grabbed her hand, and the dreaminess faded away.
Anna bit her lip. "How long have you guys known each other?"
"Not too long," he replied, before the music smothered the last of his words. "But she's been really nice to me."
"Of course she is!" Anna giggled, before landing her ankle in the wrong direction, and thus breaking the spell of stability. Lifting her foot, she bounced a few times to maintain balance, while noting the mild damage on her ankle.
Just then, he reached over and took it from Anna. Barely hanging on to her inhibitions, Anna turned her gaze onto the others; her heart taking off from the gates and speeding towards the terminal. Yet the grazes gave her a sense of belonging, tearing at her skin and her conscience.
Letting her ankle down, she tried to make a move, finding the sparkles cascade upon the man's stubble. The prickly hairs only drove her to further muddied her judgement; she took a moment to touch them before kissing them.
The glitter fell onto her lips; she admired the sparkle as time seemed to pause at that very moment. Claudia's friend hesitated on how to approach her, fiddling his hand against her back as if trying to figure out how to play a violin. A hesitant giggle, and then a locking eyes, and them another kiss.
Anna bit her tongue. Mouth to mouth always scared her, with its saliva and high expectations and angst. A kiss was sour like a fresh lemon, and stubbornly so. But she bit again so she could find some sweetness.
And everything stopped, and the temperature rose.
She didn't know that somebody was watching from the other side of the hall, with an outfit just like hers.

Muscle Memory presents: Body Of Light
All Star music band ! This sounds super cool
Tumblr media
Muscle Memory are here to make your body take control. Brooklyn duo Michael Tapper and Steven Reker have already cut a distinct shape separately in the local scene as dancefloor-filling DJs, and together they’re making dance music that’s weird, wooly, and with a throbbing pulse that moves you from the inside out.
They’ve already captivated live audiences and listeners alike with the alluring “Taste of a Kiss,” and with plenty more singles in the pipeline Muscle Memory are set to provide proper satisfaction to anyone with a sweet tooth for left-of-center electronic music.
Tapper and Reker have been notable city stalwarts for a minute now; you’ve doubtless heard the former’s stick work behind the drum kit for bands like We Are Scientists, Yellow Ostrich, and Fool’s Gold. Meanwhile, Reker’s own off-kilter approach to songwriting has shone through in his seminal indie rock band People Get Ready, as well as his dancing and choreography work for artists like David Byrne, Khruangbin, and Fleet Foxes.
This summer, the duo stepped out with their intoxicating debut EP Taste of a Kiss, featuring the hypnotic title track as well as three distinct edits of the tune—including a delightfully Prince-inspired remix from West Coast producer Woolfy. With more single releases on the way, Muscle Memory are continuing to embrace their own creative regimen, discovering new sounds within their emerging collaborative approach while remaining informed by their indie backgrounds. What if Arthur Russell made an Italo Disco song and invited Gang Of Four on guitar? It might sound something like Body Of Light, Muscle Memory's 2nd single.
That was the inspiration, anyway, and to make a song that would fit in the DJ sets of their monthly residency at James Murphy's NYC club Nightmoves.

Acclaimed Paris-based electro pop sextet and JOVM mainstays L’Impératice  will be releasing their highly-anticipated, self-produced third full-length album Pulsar through microqlima records on June 7, 2024. Pulsar is an album, where the band — founder Charles de Boisseguin (keys), Hagni Gown (keys), David Gaugué (bass), Achille Trocellier (guitar), Tom Daveau (drums) and Flore Benguigui (vocals) — made every decision while capturing the band’s spirit both onstage and off. Fittingly, the album reportedly radiates with the energy and wisdom of an outfit that has helmed countless dance parties around the world on the way to find itself and its sound. Throughout the album’s material, the Parisian JOVM mainstays move freely and authoritatively among the sounds they love, bridging hip-hop, kosmiche and modern pop with their most unabashed embraces of French Touch and international house of their growing catalog. Pulsar is also the first album of their catalog to feature guest vocalists, including acclaimed folk/pop artist Maggie Rogers and rapper/producer Erick the Architect among a list of others. The album sees the acclaimed pop outfit trying a new creative approach: They split into two teams of ever-interchanging members to explore new ideas, led by the band’s founder Charles de Boisseguin. It was a way of incorporating every voice into the songwriting process like never before, pulling from idiosyncratic upbringings and enthusiasm. They then passed tracks to lead vocalist Flore Benguigui, a longtime jazz singer, who would sometimes write two-dozen vocal melodies for a song, just to see which one fit best. It was an arduous and exciting process that saw the band go from writing through recording in about nine months. For L’Imperatice, this was the sort of self-determination they’d longed for and now found. Throughout the album’s material, the band’s Benguigui boldly sings of self-empowerment, shirking beauty standards, ageism and drag normalcy throughout the album’s material. These are apt messages for incandescent anthems of experience, of fully being yourself, instead of anyone else’s version of it. The album will feature, “Me Da Igual,” a sleek and elegant, hook-driven Giorgio Moroder-era-disco-meets-French touch tune anchored by a strutting bass line, a squiggling Nile Rodgers-like funk guitar line and glistening synths serving as a sinewy and silky bed for Flore Benguigui’s sultry and ethereal delivery. Further cementing the French outfit’s reputation for crafting infectious, sensual, dance floor friendly bops, “Me Da Igual” features lyrics sung in Spanish and French while being a call to free ourselves from the injunctions to please at all costs, to reclaim your body by abandoning yourself to the euphoria of strobe lights and the dance floor — and listening to the sensations that movement and sound provides you.  The album’s second and latest single “Danza Marilú” features Italian vocalist Fabiana Martone. Continuing a bit where its immediate predecessor left off, “Danza Marilú” is a sleek, hook-driven, Giorgio Moroder-era-Italo-disco-meets-French touch bop anchored around glistening synth arpeggios, squiggling funk guitar, a supple and sinuous bass line and thumping beats. Inspired by and written as a rebuttal to Serge Gainsbourg‘s “L’Homme á tête de chou,” Pulsar‘s latest single is a defiantly feminist anthem for women of all ages, encouraging them to get on that dance floor and to be freely themselves — in spite of the looks that may ensue by insecure haters of all stripes. The acclaimed French outfit are in the middle of a lengthy international tour that will see the sextet playing four shows in NYC: April 9, 2024 at  Racket NYC; April 10, 2024 at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg; and September 7, 2024 and September 8, 2024 at Terminal 5. The September 8, 2024 show was added due to demand. And that isn’t surprising to me: I’ve caught them once, and they’re a must-see act that will have the entire room dancing the night away. Alon...
