Past Employers - An Honest Résumé

1978: Co-Opportunity Market, Santa Monica: To be a member of this co-op you had to pay a membership fee or work a certain number of hours a month. For a while, when I was around 10, I would ride the bus or skateboard to the market after school and work either in the back, packaging product, or at the register ringing people up. It was fun to work in the back because you could munch on whatever you were packaging: fill the plastic bag, put it in the heat sealer press thing to seal up, weigh and label, repeat. At the register it was all manual entry - no scanner. I was really fast. I can’t picture a 10 year old ringing up groceries today - and that’s one of the weird things about my childhood and why I miss the 70s.

1981: Paper route, Athens, Ohio: I was going to middle school and living with my dad in Ohio. I really wanted an Atari and spent the summer delivering the Athens Messenger to raise the $138 needed to get one (and Pitfall).

1986: Interaction Publishers, Inc. (Interact), Lakeside, California: I worked for Paul DeKock and David Yount, my high school American Studies teachers, at their small educational publishing company. This is when I first used a Mac and a mouse. I had an Apple II at the time, and the graphic interface of this Mac seemed silly to me. I mean - a little picture of a trashcan you use to delete something? I half-expected a little garbage truck to drive across the screen and empty the trash into it every time you clicked Empty. Lots of photocopying, collating, shipping.

1987: The Sizzler, Near Lakeside, California: Senior year in high school I worked at the Sizzler as the “salad bar attendant” to save the money to get the fuck out of Lakeside, California.

Summer, 1987: Critiques Choice, Stone Harbor, New Jersey: The summer after high school I lived in this small Southern New Jersey beach town, away from parents for the first time, working in a little tourist gift shop. These were amazing times.

1987 or ‘88?: University of Santa Cruz A/V Department: I used to hang out with Ty at his A/V gigs at UCSC, in the projection booth. After a time he helped me to get a job doing the same.

Summer, 1988: Sheraton Hotel, Station Square, Pittsburgh: Busboy

Summer 1989: Upper Crust Pizza, Santa Cruz: Cashier. This place was right down the street from the where I was staying with McKenzie and Aaron.

1990: Pizza My Heart, Santa Cruz: After being politely asked to leave UCSC because apparently you really need to attend classes, I worked here taking pizza and movie orders (they delivered pizza and VHS tapes).

1993: La Mistral Restaurant, Fort Lauderdale, Florida: Waiter

1993: Image Devices, Miami: Drove an old Volvo station wagon with no air conditioning around Miami delivering film and video equipment for a crazy guy named David Haylock. Got to go to Caracas for a day.

1994: Five Star Productions, Boca Raton, Florida: My first “real” job after graduating from Ohio University. I worked in the tape room of this half-a-scam production company, the first of a few of this type South Florida seems to specialize in. Had some trouble with Scott Wooley, douchebag owner. Fired.

1995: Teleview Racing Patrol, Calder, Gulfstream Park and Hialeah Park race tracks, Florida: First job editing and doing camerawork. Had lots of keys, owned the place. When I said I was quitting I was brought into the trailer at the Hialeah headquarters where the very Italian guy said I was being “disloyal.”

1996: Adcraft Productions, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida: Did camera work and editing for this company that specialized in sports programming. Got the first apartment of my own across from the beach on Singer Island. Good times.

1997: Powertrax Studios, Zimmerman and Partners Advertising, Fort Lauderdale: When Adcraft refused to raise my salary to $35,000 I went to Powertrax, where they doubled what I was making. I moved south to a little cottage behind a house right off the main avenue in Delray Beach.

1999: NiteLite Video, Pompano, Florida: After a couple years making horrendous car commercials at Zimmerman I went to NiteLite. I worked there about three months when:

1999: Powertrax Studios, Zimmerman and Partners Advertising: Zimmerman got the Nissan account and hired me back at, again, twice my salary. Now I was making really good money to do shitty commercials.

2001: Court of Two Sisters, New Orleans: I was politely asked to leave Powertrax and I went on an epic road trip, ending with a job in New Orleans as a waiter.

2001: A seafood restaurant in New Orleans: Left Court of Two Sisters to work at a Bourbon Street restaurant. Was there for Mardi Gras. This was insane.

2002: 24 Hour bar, New Orleans: bar tender, 5am - 2pm

2002: RHINO Gallery, New Orleans: I worked in this little gallery/gift shop on Royal Street and had a darkroom at my place down the street above the Golden Lantern bar.

2002: CBS Affiliate, New Orleans: Did some camera and editing here.

2002: Buy Buy Bux Sailboat: Sailed with Aaron around the Virgin Islands for a few months

Summer, 2002(3?): Watership Inn, Provincetown, Massachusetts: Worked at the Inn doing Inn things (an entire book here)

Winter, 2003: Fairbanks Inn, Provincetown, Massachusetts: Worked at the Inn doing Inn things

Got a job at this ridiculous place re-editing and censoring movies for Max Abecassis, another insane Florida business owner. We had an argument about how to make a one hour version of Million Dollar Baby. Fired.

2006: The SCORE Group, Doral, Florida: Edited bad pornography. I moved to Hollywood, Florida to be closer to this job. I told my mom she could finally say her son was living in Hollywood and working in the film industry.

2008: Canvas Films, Fort Lauderdale: Another typical Florida production company, edited things like Hair Club for Men infomercials

2011: Multi Image Group, Boca Raton: I was sick of dealing with Anthony Foy, another insane Florida business owner (who once threatened me with a serving spoon). This is when I moved to the little place at the beach in Lauderdale by the Sea. I was back in a tape room situation at MIG and once again not making much money.

2011: Ed Ethridge Productions: I worked with a guy named Ed at Teleview back in 1995, and when we needed a second editor in 2000 at Zimmerman I recommended him. When I left Zimmerman he took over my job. After years there he started his own production company. In 2011 he hired me to help him make car commercials at a substantially higher salary than I was making at Multi Image Group. I had some concerns about working with him. There were some problems.

2012: US Media Television: Another Florida scam production company run by Paul Scott, Doug Scott, or whatever name he is going by now.

2013: Institute for Individual Investors (IFII), an Agora Publishing company, Delray: Editor, another Florida scam company

Carnival Brands To Four Launch New Cruise Ships In 2020, Including Its Largest Cruise Ship

Carnival Corporation & plc, the world’s largest leisure travel company, announced it will launch four new cruise ships in 2020 across four of its global cruise line brands – Iona for P&O Cruises UK, Britain’s favorite cruise line; Enchanted Princess for Princess Cruises, the fastest growing international premium cruise line; Mardi Gras for Carnival Cruise Line, America’s cruise line; and Costa Firenze for Italian brand Costa Cruises.

Iona marks the first new ship for P&O Cruises since the introduction of Britannia in 2015. Enchanted Princess is designed from the ground up as a Princess MedallionClass ship. Costa Firenze is Costa Cruises’ second ship designed and built specifically for the China market.

Mardi Gras is named as a tribute to TSS Mardi Gras, Carnival Cruise Line’s first-ever ship, which marked a historic turning point in accelerating growth in the popularity of modern-day cruising.

P&O Cruises’ Iona and Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras will be the third and fourth (respectively) of Carnival Corporation’s 11 total next-generation cruise ships joining the fleet through 2025 that can be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the industry’s most advanced fuel technology, eliminating sulfur and significantly improving overall air emissions.

Part of Carnival Corporation’s strategy of measured capacity growth, each new ship provides an opportunity to introduce new guest innovations, energy efficiencies and sustainability approaches to cruising, while creating excitement, meeting growing demand and generating consideration of cruising as an extraordinary vacation at an exceptional value. The introduction of the four new ships in 2020 is part of Carnival Corporation’s ongoing fleet enhancement strategy, with 16 new ships scheduled to be delivered through 2025, designed to continue improving the overall guest experience while accelerating demand for cruising, the fastest growing segment in the vacation industry.

These new ships build on the momentum of Carnival Corporation’s four new vessels launched with rave reviews in 2019 – Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Panorama, Costa Cruises’ Costa Smeralda and Costa Venezia, and Sky Princess from Princess Cruises.

“Each new ship is an opportunity to generate excitement and buzz among consumers around the world, whether loyal guests or new to cruising, that will continue to inspire more travelers to consider cruising as a vacation option,” said Roger Frizzell, chief communications officer for Carnival Corporation. “We look forward to the delivery of four more spectacular ships, which will offer our guests the latest in onboard features and amenities – and help us continue our reputation for providing great cruise vacations that are significantly less than comparable land-based vacations.”

Below is a brief look at Carnival Corporation’s four new ships for 2020:

Iona from P&O Cruises (UK) – May 2020

When Iona joins the P&O Cruises (UK) fleet in May, it will launch as the popular British line’s first LNG-powered ship. Among the distinguishing characteristics of Iona will be the Grand Atrium, a new development for the cruise line with uninterrupted panoramic views of the sea, framed by glazed walls stretching three decks high. Located at the heart of Iona, the glazed Grand Atrium is a lively focal point that encapsulates the spirit of the ship, with each level offering natural light and breath-taking views.

Iona’s distinct “crown” will be the SkyDome, a new entertainment venue on the top two levels of the ship and capped by a glass-domed roof designed by award-winning British engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan, the team behind glass masterpieces such as London’s Embassy Gardens Sky Pool and Bulgari’s flagship New York boutique. SkyDome’s unique event space offers an ideal place for relaxation and informal dining during the day, transitioning into vibrant evening activities, including spectacular aerial performances, immersive shows and deck parties.

With a choice of 30 different bar and restaurant venues, Iona’s guests will enjoy the widest ever selection of places to eat and drink on a ship built exclusively for the British cruise holiday market. Innovative and flexible dining options include a “foodie” market offering cuisine from around the world, a new gastropub concept and a laid-back cocktail lounge.

As part of the new approach to dining, Iona will for the first time offer Freedom Dining in all of its main restaurants, giving guests more flexibility for dining. As with other ships in the P&O Cruises fleet, Iona will have The Retreat, a private, open-air deck area where cold flannels, chilled drinks, snacks and al fresco spa treatments are offered in the privacy of shaded cabanas. Iona’s Retreat will also have two infinity whirlpools.

Another new offering is the spa’s variety of destination-themed treatments with locally inspired therapies incorporated into the experience. Cruise guests might choose from rejuvenating options such as the Nordic Cleanse or the Baltic & Ice Massage, inspired by the Nordic heritage of hot and cold therapies.

Upon launch in May 2020, Iona will sail from Southampton, United Kingdom, exclusively to the Norwegian Fjords during the inaugural season with departures throughout spring and summer 2020, followed by winter sun holidays to the Canaries, Spain and Portugal.

Enchanted Princess from Princess Cruises – June 2020

Debuting in Rome (Civitavecchia) in June 2020, the 3,660-guest Enchanted Princess shares all of the spectacular style and luxury of its sister ships – Regal Princess, Royal Princess, Majestic Princess and the recently launched Sky Princess. Guests will discover exquisite, one-of-a-kind dining experiences, more pools and whirlpool hot tubs and world-class entertainment venues hosting dazzling performances. The ship also will feature breathtaking Sky Suites, with expansive views from the largest balconies at sea, which originally debuted on Sky Princess in October 2019.

Measuring 1,012 square feet (starboard side Sky Suite) and 947 square feet (port side Sky Suite), the furnished balconies will provide a private vantage of the ship’s Movie Under the Stars screen and create the ultimate space for entertaining. The two suites will also offer 270-degree panorama views and have sleeping capacity for five guests, and more room for gathering – making them ideal for families. Before Sky Suite guests board their cruise ship, they can take advantage of a pre-cruise, shoreside concierge. Once onboard, guests will also enjoy Sanctuary services on their balcony, a private suite experience manager, complimentary access to the Lotus Spa’s Enclave, enhanced ultimate balcony dining and even a deluxe telescope for Discovery Stargazing at Sea.

Enchanted Princess will offer new entertainment experiences recently introduced on Sky Princess, including Phantom Bridge, a world’s first game combining digital and physical elements for the ultimate immersive escape room; Take Five, the only jazz theater at sea, celebrating the iconic sounds, culture and history of jazz; and new one-of-a-kind production shows like Rock Opera created exclusively for Princess Cruises.

In addition, Enchanted Princess marks the second ship purpose-built MedallionClass newbuild. Featuring the complimentary OceanMedallion

wearable device, MedallionClass vacations deliver an entirely new level of service and create a vacation that is more seamless, effortless and personalized. Considered a breakthrough in the vacation industry and a CES® 2019 Innovation Award Honoree, the complimentary OceanMedallion features leading-edge technology that delivers personalized service through enhanced guest-crew interactions, while eliminating friction points and enabling interactive entertainment.

Debuting in the Mediterranean in June 2020, Enchanted Princess will be named in Southampton, United Kingdom, and depart on its 10-day maiden voyage July 1 to Rome, where it will begin a series of Mediterranean cruises for the summer and fall before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale in November 2020 for sailings to the Caribbean for the winter season.

Mardi Gras from Carnival Cruise Line – November 2020

In a nod to Carnival Cruise Line’s rich history as America’s Cruise Line, the brand’s newest ship Mardi Gras was named in honor of the first Carnival Cruise Line ship that entered service in 1972 and played a leading role in generating widespread popularity for cruise vacations in the U.S. Mardi Gras will be the first cruise ship in North America to be powered by LNG, the marine industry’s most advanced fuel technology.

Carnival Cruise Line’s most innovative ship, Mardi Gras will feature groundbreaking experiences like the first roller coaster at sea, BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster. The thrill ride offers 360-degree views while guests race 187 feet above the sea with drops, dips and hairpin turns reaching speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Guests can choose their own speed on the all-electric roller coaster so no two rides will ever be the same.

BOLT will take center stage in the Ultimate Playground, spanning Decks 18-20 and home to the largest WaterWorks aqua park in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet, featuring three unique heart-racing slides designed for all-ages, an exciting zone designed specifically for kids with a 150-gallon PowerDrencher tipping bucket and numerous water toys.

Mardi Gras will introduce Emeril’s Bistro 1396, the first seagoing restaurant by famed New Orleans chef Emeril Lagasse that will be housed in the ship’s French Quarter, one of six themed zones on board offering a variety of food, beverage and entertainment choices.

Entertainment will be at the heart of Mardi Gras’ onboard experience with never-before-seen offerings including a first-in-fleet partnership with Family Feud, new high-tech Playlist Productions shows, a dedicated Punchliner Comedy Club, and new live music and entertainment options.

Mardi Gras is set to debut in November 2020, operating year-round seven-day Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral.

Costa Firenze from Costa Cruises – October 2020

Costa Firenze is the second ship for Costa Cruises built specifically for the China market, where the Italian company was the first international cruise line to start operating in 2006.

Inspired by the city of Florence and representing centuries of Italian culture and history, Costa Firenze will offer guests the chance to fully immerse themselves in Italian beauty and aesthetics, which will take shape in various aspects of life on board from interior design to dining and entertainment to hospitality.

Like its sister ship Costa Venezia, Costa Firenze will offer a series of innovations designed specifically for the Chinese market, including a wide choice of Chinese food, Chinese-style karaoke and parties such as the “Golden Party” with surprises and gifts awarded every 10 minutes.

Following its delivery scheduled for September 30, Costa Firenze will head to China, offering cruising for Chinese customers beginning October 20, 2020.

Food For Thought: Casa Calabria

My husband Jonathan and I recently went to dinner at a family-owned southern Italian restaurant at the Ocean Manor Resort in the Galt Mile Fort Lauderdale Beach area. Wow! I feel like my family (who are ‘Full-blooded Sicilian’) cooked, served and entertained us for two and a half hours.

Casa Calabria is one of Fort Lauderdale’s most authentic Italian dining experiences. Founded on the Talerico family’s recipes, Chef Adriano Serra transports you to Italy with Southern Italian dishes like homemade Calamari Fritti, Ricotta Gnocchi and Branzino that is flown in fresh from the Mediterranean Sea. It all culminates with their divine homemade Tiramisu.

We were greeted by Lina, and escorted to our table where we met our team of servers, who immediately brought us crispy Italian bread with a side of sugo (the Italian word for sauce) which is great for dunking this dense sliced bread. Of course, they still have imported EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) at every table too for those of you who like to dip instead of dunk. The serving team continued to work like Mama would have when you bring friends over in order to make everyone feel like family.

Our friendly server quickly described the evening’s specials which included grilled lamb chops, a 16 oz. T-bone steak and swordfish filet topped with shellfish in a sweet and tangy tomato sauce.

To begin our special evening we ordered the Burrata Fatta a Mano, fresh mozzarella with a rich, creamy soft center ($18). It was topped with fresh basil and artistically drizzled with EVOO, balsamic vinegar and chopped fresh tomato. It tasted like the mozzarella was fresh made just for us.

As Jonathan and I were finishing this soft, creamy delicacy, Chef Adriano came out of the kitchen to visit us and every guest. He joyfully bragged about his favorites which included his homemade gnocchi, lamb chops and the special swordfish filet. He made it sound so fresh and yummy, just like he caught it himself earlier in the day.

The final decision to select which of the main courses we wanted was upon us. Jonathan chose the 8 Oz. Filet Mignon topped with creamy brandy gravy and green peppercorns ($45). I went with one of the Chef’s favorites, the Swordfish and a side of fresh pasta (market price).

Both items were prepared perfectly. My serving of Swordfish was more than enough to share. I also suggest that you try the Calabria Meat Sauce with Pasta. The taste brought me back to southern Italy. This sauce includes slowly stewed chunks of beef in a delicious fresh tomato and basil sugo.

The main courses range in price from the $20’s to $40’s. And all of the selections seem to include enough leftover for a tasty lunch the following day.

Italian families love their sweets. So save room for Casa Calabria’s heavenly tiramisu ($10) and a fresh ground and prepared espresso ($2.50). Our server stressed that their tiramisu is made with mascarpone cheese. The authentic way to create this house specialty. I have enjoyed tiramisu from several different regions of Italy, and Casa Calabria’s ranks at the top with the best in Italy. Don’t miss this specialty. For those of you who are more of a ‘chocoholic’, Casa Calabria’s chocolate cake with layers of sweet hazelnut cream ($10) is a perfect selection.

After dinner, we went and hung out in their popular piano bar where almost every Italian in the area seems to be regulars. And in between sipping on their cocktails, they are singing along with live performers.

Harmony of the Seas Cruise Review Day 1 (Pre-Cruise)

January 27th the most exciting day of the year, travel day was finally upon us! I zipped up the last suitcase and headed out to the car to catch my 7:50 flight to Ft. Lauderdale International Airport! After rushing through security and of course grabbing my venti caramel macchiato from Starbucks then literally running to the gate, we were finally onboard and ready to take off!

30,000 ft in the air on my favorite airline, Southwest, I was busy with the thought of where this plane was taking me. Traveling at an ungodly speed to the world's largest and most innovative passenger ship afloat had my excitement at 10,000 miles per hour! After three hours and 50 minutes of one of the smoothest flight I have ever been on with the friendliest flight crew, we finally touched down in Sunny Ft. Lauderdale! With my excitement too extreme to handle I could not get out of the plane fast enough.

After getting through the baggage claim we searched for the complimentary shuttle to the hotel. We arrived at the Hilton Ft Lauderdale Airport/ Cruise Port hotel at around 12 p.m. had a swift check and quickly scurried up to our room to change into shorts (FINALLY) and then find a place for lunch. Once in our room, we quickly discovered that the double beds were simply not going to fit more than one person, seeing my sister, best friend and I simply do not want to be that close to each other. We approached the front desk to ask for a cot and was delighted to be upgraded, free of charge, to a suite!

After a smooth room transition, we quickly ordered an Uber to take us into downtown Ft. Lauderdale and ultimately ended up at Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort! We sat for lunch at the Landshark Bar and Grill we ordered fish sandwiches and frozen drinks, of course. After a fantastic quick lunch, we made our way to the Lone Palm Beach Bar about 50 feet from the beach and spent a few hours drinking delicious frozen drinks while being entertained by the best bartender and the extremely drunk, fellow pre-cruise, individuals at the bar!

Hours past, I watched the Coral Princess sail into the sunset and just like that it was time to meet the other part of our vacation clan for dinner. We arrived at the Hilton Ft Lauderdale Marina to meet my sister her family and friends for dinner while we waited for the rest of my family to arrive in Florida! After briefly exploring the very chic Hilton Marina I walked outside and to my delight, there was the Costa Deliziosa, the fist Costa ship I have ever seen in person! Once my brief 10-minute photo opts session was completed we headed to Bravo Ristorante. Now living in New England you get very spoiled with the incredibly delicious authentic Italian cuisine severed on almost ever street, Bravo was defiantly not authentic Italian cuisine or even fake Italian cuisine it was barely edible and the service left a lot to be desired, I urge everyone to please skip this restaurant and look for other local restaurants to enjoy!

Our day left us exhausted and ready for bed by 10 P.M. we jumped in our uber, got to our hotel, embraced the later arrivals of our travel clan and got to bed. Sweet dreams graced us all night with dreams of our next day when we would finally board the Harmony of the Seas! Stay tuned for Day 2- Boarding Day!
