kushina headcanons (context: mutagenicity)

i think for the reborn au i will Lean In to the new information that she was stuck in a specific part of konoha after the kyuubi was sealed. this doesn't mean she twiddled her thumbs and did nothing the whole time-- she helped develop new fuinjutsu/trained people in fuinjutsu for War Reasons, kept up to snuff with combat skills, and as she grew was probably able to do more general training with younger shinobi. she might have had other duties? but for this fic she was promoted to chunin for her duties around the village at like ~14. even after minato helped spruce up her seal so she could go wherever she wanted, they were still weird about sending her on any really big missions >:( but she still won her jounin promotion :)

(minato is looser about her taking missions she wants/finds interesting than the sarutobi administration, largely because he's personally had her beat him into the ground in a spar, but also because anything that fucks with the kyuubi seal will alert him and he can go help. but ALSO also it is weirdly convenient for the love of his life to also be the village jinchuriki because like. he has a VERY GOOD REASON he can't ever be forced into a position where he'd have to send her on an overly dangerous mission, which could otherwise happen to a sealmaster. but A L S O "well she's the hokage's wife" is what anyone not high up enough to know the jinchuriki secret would think when he has to do stuff like summon jiraiya from across the continent to do something kushina should theoretically be able to do)

what this means for mutagenicity is: kushina was never on a genin team and she has no idea what they're supposed look like. like she knows but she doesn't KNOW-know. if deidara wants to be an artist, shouldn't she be encouraging him???? did you know itachi gets nicer if you sneak candy into his pockets. making a seal that peels a mouse inside out is part of the procESS

plus she has no sense for what normal beginner genin missions are like. she's under the impression they should be..... cute?? why do so many of these involve catching cats. no itachi, that's boring, let's go beat up some highway bandits

also i was thinking about her friendship with mikoto, and my hc for this is going to be that they were friendly but weren't actually that close (i think mikoto has to be a few years older, because itachi was already five when she had sasuke) BUT they ended up closer because Kushina went to her for baby advice, bc mikoto is like the only female friend kushina has who's already gotten a whole ass child through the baby phase. it's also nice to have a mom friend they can do cute little play dates with!!! they both ignore that naruto and sasuke hate each other :) this is why itachi doesn't really know much about her-- she wasn't close friends with his mom in the previous timeline so he met her maybe like. twice.
