Cross is turned into a husky and he's having the worst day ever- oh no you're cuddling him and kissing him and calling him cute names and you're petting his fur and it feels amazing and------ this isn't so bad after all

For the first month after Echo joins the batch he’s lowkey convinced Crosshair is trying to kill him. Mainly bc Crosshair follows him everywhere and glares in his general direction, pops up anywhere he is, chews on toothpicks at him, and is generally a bit overbearing. It’s only after he overhears Wrecker tease Crosshair about ‘imprinting on Echo’ that he even realizes that this man is a protective oversized cat who can’t vocalize anything but will instead trot after him to every room, sit quietly next to him, and bring him cool rocks he found as if they’re the product of a successful hunt.

Echo brings Crosshair the next pack of novelty toothpicks he finds.

"coastal american mutt" as a term for describing the experience of growing up in one of the coastal US states and also being so far removed from any personal ethnic/cultural history that isnt "generic american things" (you're technically italian but your parents are WASPs, for example) is very fun.

unless you grew up in either a major city or a distinct region (lowcountry, the gulf, new england, etc.) its easy to feel as if you "have no culture" when your community doesnt fill that void. when you were brought up on standardized commercial chains. when your culture becomes what brands you consumed. culture feels nebulous and amorphous.

i think thats why you have a lot of white people who do DNA tests looking for something they can anchor themself back to- and why so many people purposefully misunderstand the results. they want something to "reveal the secret connection to their people"' not understanding the cultural and capitalistic forces that steamrolled everyone else. stopping myself there because i dont want to get into a whole 4 hour ramble on atomization.

having a term for that experience is helpful in creating bonds across state barriers and letting people feel less isolated from the experience. it denotes the difference between being inland and being on the coast, which is thankfully something even most people know instinctively. its a cute lead-in as well, because if in conversation people will probably ask what the term means, and then you can choose to specify where you're from or just to say its a catch-all (if you have no fondness for where you grew up, or if you moved around a lot).

because truthfully, you do have a culture. its just recognized as the default in most conversations between people from inside the country. its like how americans will say "oh i have no accent", when the only possible way to not have an accent is to not speak at all.

it can feel like that culture is based only on consumption, which is the nature of the capitalist society we live in, but i urge you when being nostaligc to instead base it off of your experiences. don't let them buy your sense of identity
