Haru: Tohru, tell your bf to accept this secret passionate love for Yuki and join the new Yuki Fan Club.
Kyo: I said replace me with her, dammit! Not add her and not get rid of me!
Tohru: Kyo, please, honey, just accept your secret passionate love for Yuki. Also, thanks for adding me guys! Kyo has been complaining about this group chat for over an hour, and I wanted in so bad, but didn’t want to just invite myself.

15.
Today really was a Happy Birthday, wasn't it? Molly thought to herself while jamming to music in her car. I can't wait to get home and tell Toby all about it.
16.
"Another time, I forced everyone to listen to Kidz Bop instead of original songs, claiming they were more Good Place friendly as you do. Another time I said the only people who make it to Heaven are the ones that love the movie Citizen Kane and refuse to watch anything else, so we kept watching it repeatedly as you do. Another time, I forced you to retake French, which I know you hated in high school, cuz I had Janet put a French filter on Chidi's voice...as you do," he rambled off.
"You know adding 'as you do' doesn't make it better...especially as NO ONE DOES THOSE THINGS," Eleanor said, now standing, and looking at Michael accusingly.
17.
His eyes began to water. He slid off the chair next to her. He pulled her into an embrace. She stiffened as he buried his face in her hair that hung near her neck and over her shoulder. His tears were hot as they soaked her sleeve and hair.
18.
Jane attempts to put her hands on her hips, but there isn't room. Instead, she sticks them in her armpits.
19.
"But I-I," Meg stuttered. "NO BUTS! I want you to think about how disrespectful you've been while were gone," Juliet retorted. Olka belly laughed and whispered, "Butts!" Astrid kicked her sister in the shin.

Fruits Basket Final Season, Episode 1
Tumblr media
Sounds of intense sobbing and blubbering and also wheezing.
Okay. I’m okay. I’m FiNe.
BUT CAN I TAKE A MOMENT TO SCREAM ABOUT THE OPENING ANIMATION AND HOW IT MADE ME WANT TO CRY AND ALSO THE ENDING ANIMATION AND HOW IT MADE ME WANT TO CRY TOO BECAUSE THAT WAS NATSUKI TAKAYA’S ART I’D KNOW IT ANYWHERE AHHHHHHHHH
Okay okay, so we leave off where the second season did, with Tohru finding out that Akito is a girl. Kureno clarifies his explanation as to why he can’t see Uotani, saying he has another girl whose side he must stay by. He also explains that Akito was raised as a man (I don’t remember the story, but there was something like this in one of my classes last year) by decree of his mother, Ren, an honestly terrifying woman who Akito hints at being too flirty with the zodiac men. (IS RITSU OKAY THAT’S ALL I WANNA KNOW.)
Then we get a bit of backstory on some Sohma philosophies. Akito is very attached to the “bonds” between her and the zodiac members, as they are her only reference to love. Ren says that the bonds are unnatural, and they do not constitute real love in the slightest. Kureno agrees with Ren, and it seems that the guilt from THAT is what keeps him with Akito. It’s all very twisted.
We see Akito attack her mother (ngl that was a badass scene and I am still in shock), making the point that she’s never known another type of love. Parental love was a sham when it came from Ren, so the bonds are all she has. Honestly, it’s something to be pitied. Ren says that the love between her and Akira (yes, Akito’s father) was real, and if Akito kills her, at least she can be with him again. There is a flashback to Akira telling Akito she was born to be loved, which, considering how Akito is now, probably warped her as much as Ren’s bad parenting.
Sohma parents that aren’t Hiro’s really need to work out their shit.
There is another flashback to back when Akito was first conceived. The Mabudachi Trio (Hatori, Shigure, and Ayame) plus Kureno had the same dream and cried before running to Ren and lowkey being a little weird and touching her stomach. Basically, the zodiac spirits kicked in and automatically attached them all to Akito already, which is all fine and dandy, except it trapped them. And Kureno knows this. And he apologizes that all this mountain of complication is keeping him from Uotani.
But Tohru can’t even move.
Hanajima comes to her rescue and takes her back to her house. They sit down, and without explaining it in its entirety, Tohru explains what precisely she was shocked about.
To put it in non-Takaya terms, Tohru really wanted to get Kureno to see Uotani again. Even with his roundabout explanation, Tohru learned the precise reasons why he can’t see her. She says that Kureno is a caring man who puts others’ feelings before his own, and in the face of that depth of selflessness, she was speechless. She couldn’t comprehend sacrificing so much of yourself just to keep one person happy (even if she does it in her own way every day).
Now, I’d like to think another part of Tohru’s conflict here is that she can’t imagine giving up so much of herself to help Kyo and make him happy. That might be because she doesn’t know how, due to her non-zodiac nature, or because she’s never had to. What she selflessly does for people every day is on a smaller scale than what Kureno is doing. But it’s a little more effective and long-lasting, as we can see from the flaws in Akito’s relationship with the former Rooster and her general temperament.
In any case, Tohru continues to explain that Momiji and others have helped her track down Kureno time and time again to convince him. But when it came her turn to directly tell him to see Uo, she couldn’t do anything. And that kills her.
Hanajima calmly tells her that, of course, Tohru is much the same way as Kureno. (I love their juxtaposition, too, especially how Uo describes him as being very much like Tohru in his airheadedness.) She says that she’s afraid that someday, the weight of trying to help others with crush Tohru, and she won’t ever smile again. I think that’s something a lot of the zodiac fears as well.
That’s when Uo pops in and says that would be the end of the world.
Uo and Tohru have a nice little moment together, which in a way, finally resolves Uo’s arc of moodiness and despair. Hana’s brother, Megumi, gives us a little hope that maybe someday things will work out.
The episode cuts then to Rin, who has snuck onto the Sohma estate, possibly to confront Kureno, as it seems that she overheard a lot of his conversation with Tohru. She’s stopped by Ren, who asks if she wants her help. If you haven’t noticed already, their hairstyles are eerily similar (which, thanks to a lovely commenter on a previous analysis post, explains why Akito has always hated Rin so much).
Back at Shigure’s house, Kyo has found Tohru’s scarf, and those two are just too cute again. Yuki sees Tohru smiling and seems relieved, and Shigure jokes that Yuki is hopeless in the kitchen. (We still love him.)
So for the most part, Tohru feels better, and life can go on. But she’ll still be puzzling things out on her own, because that’s the way she is.
Alright, it’s now time to obsess over these new songs and try not to break into random sobbing fits. See you all next week hopefully!

Kyo Sohma x Reader (Fluff)
Warning: uh... None?
A/n: I think was absolutely cute. Low-key kinda proud of this one!
"T-Tohru?" You asked the brunette girl standing about five feet away from you. She was accompanied by two very attractive young men, one with silver hair and one with orange hair. She turned to where you were and her eyes widened.
"(Y/n)? Is… is that really you?!" You nodded and you two ran towards each other, your (h/l) (h/c) hair flowing behind you. You two collided in a hug and you stayed like that, silently crying into each other's shoulders.
"Miss Honda? Who is this?" The silver haired male asked behind you and Tohru.
"Oh! Yuki! This is my sister!" She smiled brightly.
"You have a sister?!" The orange haired male practically yelled and it made you frown slightly.
"Calm down you dumb cat. No need to yell, we are right here." Yuki spoke coolly.
"Shut up stupid rat!" The ginger yelled again.
"Oh! It's okay Kyo! No one really knows!" Tohru smiled nervously.
"Why's that? She got something wrong with her?" Kyo asked a bit rudely and you frowned even further.
"Do you ever know when to shut up?" Yuki responded, irritation laced in his words.
"What? If no one really knows about her there has to be something wrong with her! No one would just want to keep their child a secret!" Tears started to prick the corners of your eyes. He didn't even know you! How could he just say that?!
"You don't even know me, you pathetic excuse for a human being." Anger and sadness are very evident in your voice. "You have no right to say anything about me, even if it's just an assumption. No one knew about me because I was given up for an open adoption. Our mother didn't make enough money to keep both of us and decided an open adoption was best for everyone. We still got to see each other and spend time together. That's why no one really knows about me, you asshat!" You shouted at the ginger male.
"HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT?! YOU DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING!"
"YOU NEVER ASKED NOR GAVE ME A CHANCE TO EVEN SAY IT!" You shouted right back.
"I'm sorry for his ignorance miss….."
"(L/n), (y/n) (l/n). It's a pleasure to meet you Yuki." You said and then bowed. "And it's quite alright. It's not like you're the reason he has no filter." You spoke towards Kyo that time and the anger in his eyes was showing. "Next time you want to say something about someone, make sure you have the facts first." After that you ignored Kyo every chance you got. But now being at the same school as your sister, you tended to spend a lot of time at the Sohma household. Even Shigure had taken a liking to you, I mean… what young school girl HASNT he taken a liking too. But you were different, you tending to flirt back with Shigure, who in return, would usually just go back to his room because he had no idea what the fuck to do with that. He never had someone down right flirt back before and he was a bit awkward about it.
"I've never seen Shigure retreat to his room so quickly before." Yuki spoke surprised.
"Has anyone ever flirted back with him?" You asked as you ate the rice balls your sister made.
"No."
"Well then that's why, the poor old man probably hasn't got a good lay in years and now doesn't know how to respond to someone flirting back." You said nonchalantly which caused the others to spit out their food. "What?"
"That's fucking gross, (y/n)!" Kyo yelled.
"Don't listen then gingy." He rolled his eyes and that's when you two got into another argument. By the time you both cooled down you realized that everyone had left the house. They just…. Left. You groaned as kyo walked towards you.
"What wrong now?"
"Nothing.. just everyone left when they said they would go to the park with me." You pouted. Kyo couldn't help but let a small smile slip into his face.
"The park?"
"Yes! I wanted to swing on the swing set and go down the slide. Maybe play tag or hide and seek."
"Doesn't that sound a bit… childish?"
"So?! It's fun!" You argued, making Kyo pinch the bridge of his nose in annoyance.
"I'll go with you if it'll make you stop pouting." You instantly smiled. You didn't care if it was Kyo, the boy you may have hated but also had a stupid crush on, you had someone to go to the park with you.
"Yay! Let's go!" You grabbed your hands and ran towards the door to put your shoes. You dragged him out the door and all the way to the park, hand in hand. Kyo couldn't help the small blush that crept onto his face as he looked at your connected hands. Fingers laced together. It just felt… right to Kyo. He would never admit out loud that he liked you. Your personality, the way you were proud of who you were and the things you did, the way your eyes sparkled when you talk about your favorite food or the way you could hold your own against him. The way you would get angry when he beat you while sparring, knowing you weren't trained like him but still went against him anyway. He shook his head and cleared his mind when you two came to a stop.
"So, what do you want to do first?" He asked while putting his hands in his pockets.
"Let's see you can swing the highest!" You smiled and ran towards the swing set. Another small smile made it ways to his face as he watched you get excited about swings. You waited for him and smiled when he sat next to you. "Okay, the first one to reach the top bar wins!"
"What do I get if I win?" He asked.
"Anything you want! And if I win, anything I want!" You smirked, you were the best damn swinger in the world. You got this in the bag.
"Deal."
~~~
"I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND! HOW THE FUCK DID YOU WIN!?" You yelled once you reached the Sohma household after hours of swinging rematches.
"Long legs short stack." He chuckled as you pouted. You two entered the house and it was still empty. "They went out for dinner." Kyo said, coming next to you with a note written in Tohru's handwriting.
"Oh.. okay then. Want me to make something for dinner?" You asked as you made your way into the kitchen.
"Sure." Kyo shrugged and followed you. "So, I thought of what I wanted for winning." He said nervously.
"And?"
"Kiss me." He whispered, if he wasn't standing directly behind you, his mouth right next to your ear, you would've never heard him. You slowly turned to look him in the face.
"What?" You couldn't believe he said that. You had to have been dreaming! There was no way in Hell that Kyo Sohma would ask you to kiss him.
"Kiss me." He repeated himself. You didn't even have time to think as your face moved closer to his own. The two of you locked lips and butterflies immediately began to warm your tummy. It was perfect.
He pulled you closer, bodies flush against one another. Your arms around his neck and his around your waist. That's when his eyes shot open and he pushed back a bit. He saw the look of hurt in your eyes and felt awful. He looked at himself, awe stricken. He hadn't transformed. He was still human. He looked back at you who now had a look of confusion written on your face. He smiled and pulled you closer to him, crashing his lips against yours. It was filled with passion and love and need and hunger. Once you two pulled away, breathing heavily, you asked. "What was that push about?" He pecked your lips again.
"I'll explain some other time. Right now, I just want to hold you, okay? Please?" You didn't hesitate to bid your head yes. You spent the rest of the time cuddling on the couch. When the others came home, they found the two of you cuddled on the couch sleeping peacefully.
"He didn't turn?" A surprised Yuki asked.
"I guess he found his one true soulmate." Shigure shrugged and smiled. "Too bad too, I was ready to finally flirt back with her." Yuki then slapped him upside the head.
"I'm so glad they are happy together." Tohru smiled and placed a light green blanket over the two of you. "Goodnight sis, night Kyo. Sleep peacefully." Everyone went to their separate rooms and went to bed. The next day you awoke alone on the couch. You entered the kitchen.
"So, care to explain why you pushed me away last night, Kyo?" Everyone looked at the two of you and sighed. Kyo then began the story of the zodiac and your eyes widened. "WHAT?! NO WAY! TOHRU, HUG HIM I WANNA SEE KITTY KYO!" Suddenly Kyo ran and you chased him.
"Well, I think they are a perfect couple." Yuki smirked.
For the prompts, any fandom, any ship: decadence. Just the word decadence, let's see what you can do, go wild
ahhhh thank you for this prompt!! this was so much fun to write. i hope you don't mind that i chose kyohru. i've never written them before but i've been aching to, i just didn't have a good idea. hope you enjoy :)
i promise to remember every sunrise with you
summary: an introspective night under the stars, and a moment together under the sunrise. takes place some point after tohru finds out that kyo will be locked up after high school.
pairings: kyo sohma/tohru honda
words: 1536
warnings: none
The thing he will miss the most, Kyo thinks, when he is caged, is the sky at night. He’ll miss the stars, and the way that they blink in and out with the wind, as if they are wind chimes pushed from side to side with each passing cloud. He’ll miss the lights of the planes as they fly by, the red and green blinking in the moonlight like something alien. He’ll miss the moon, the crescent and the gibbous and the full moon, all hanging in the sky like a face looking down and loving him.
He lies on the roof, now, staring up at the stars. It’s four am, and the sun is beginning to peek over the horizon, rosy fingers beginning to drift out and over, lighting the sky with her sunrise-red and gold. He wants the night to last a little longer, wants the darkness to stay and hide him for just a few more hours. He needs the loneliness, sometimes.
Other times, he wants nothing more than to be with people. He wants nothing more than to hold hands with someone— his mind speaks a name and he does not let it sit on his tongue for long— or hug them, or find the sweetness of being held in a way he has never felt before. Other times, he wants nothing more than to be in the light, reaching out to find someone there to reach back. Other times, he wants nothing more than to laugh with a friend, to let happiness fill him up until he’s spilling over with it.
He knows, though, that he does not deserve it. He was cursed long before he ever knew he hungered for such a thing as happiness, and bearing his curse means starving.
Kyo shifts slightly, moving his hands behind his head to rest on his palms, crossing his ankles. He feels steady up here in a way that he doesn’t feel in the stifling heat of the house. Though the day is humid, these ghost hours of the night are cool. He sighs, closing his eyes.
He thinks of the little hut with the cage that he will be put in after graduation— because he knows, deep down in a place that he cannot accept, that he will lose his bet with Akito. He knows, in a way that sits and settles bone deep and that he ignores so carefully, that he will never win against Yuki. His punches always land slightly off, he always commits to his dive a little too strongly, his stance always slips a little too early.
Kyo isn’t giving up. Not yet. He can keep training. He’ll win, he tells himself, and be accepted, and then he can sit and stare at the stars for as many nights as he wants. He can sit on a roof and make wishes on airplanes and track the moon’s waxing and waning and be free. He can drink in the wind and let himself drift away on it, letting it relax him. There will be no confined spaces to fear, no cages to prepare himself for, no people to get ready to miss.
He will be able to indulge this one thing. He will drink in the stars and he will hold them on his tongue and he will let them burn. He will let himself live.
There are other things, too, that he will miss. He knows this in the same way that he knows he will be locked up: with certainty, and with a carefully executed ignorance. There are things that he knows he cannot let himself hope for.
“What are you doing up here?”
Kyo opens his eyes, turning towards the ladder at the side of the house. “Tohru?”
Tohru pokes her head above the edge of the roof, looking at him with wide eyes. “Can I… join you?”
“Sure,” he says, more earnest than he had meant to make it sound. He wants her to join him in this silence, he realizes. He wants her to find him in the secrecy of his thoughts. “What’re you doing up?”
She shrugs, crawling onto the roof. She’s hesitant with every step, as if she’s afraid that she’ll fall off. He sits up, reaching his hand out to steady her. She takes it with even more hesitance, but her grip is strong when he helps her sit down next to him.
“I couldn’t sleep last night,” she says softly. “I don’t know why. But I thought I would come watch the sunrise. I didn’t know you would be awake.”
Kyo nods, turning away from her. From the roof, they can see the entire city, they can watch as the world wakes up below them. The sun hasn’t risen yet, not entirely, but the sky is turning a lighter blue than the nighttime had brought. The sun is spreading out over the horizon, spilling colors along the line of mountain and forest and city, rising up and painting the sky gold.
This, too, he will miss. This, too, will be something he aches for. Once he’s in that cage, he will never see the sunrise again. He’ll never sit with Tohru and watch the brilliance of the light.
“Why are you awake?” Tohru asks, glancing over at him.
He looks at her, and she turns away, cheeks flushed, as if she’s embarrassed to have been caught looking. He wonders why she does that— why she looks. Every time that she sees him, Kyo can’t help but feel like she’s seeing something more than his eyes, like she’s seeing straight into his thoughts rather than just letting her gaze wash over his face. It’s strange, though, because he doesn’t feel invaded so much as he feels cared for. Someone cares enough to truly see him, to try to understand him.
For so long, Kyo had thought that he was unknowable. But Tohru is trying to unravel all of his webs and nets and fears. Tohru is trying to know him, and Kyo aches to tell her every secret he has ever kept.
He won’t. He knows that would be the end of everything. One day, he’ll have the courage. Maybe right before he’s locked up, he thinks bitterly, so that she never has to look at him again.
“Couldn’t sleep either,” Kyo finally says, breaking himself out of his self-induced misery. “Bad dreams.”
“Do you want to talk about them?” Tohru asks. “Sometimes that helps.”
Kyo shrugs. He pulls one knee up to his chest, resting his elbow against it. Tohru, next to him, wraps both her arms around her legs, holding herself close.
“That’s okay,” Tohru says. “You don’t have to. I remember whenever Mom asked about my bad dreams, I never wanted to tell her, even if I knew it would help.”
“It’s just… weird to talk about,” Kyo confesses. He doesn’t look at her, just keeps his eyes on the horizon. “I just think too much, you know?”
Tohru nods, eyes unfocused. She’s drifting off into her head, he can tell. She’s going somewhere that he can’t follow.
Somehow, though, he finds that he doesn’t mind when she does that while he’s with her. He’s grateful for any amount of time with her, whether or not it’s spent in silence. If he’s going to be locked in a cage for the rest of his life, he wants as many sunrises with Tohru as he can count, no matter the amount of talking versus dreaming.
“It’s so beautiful,” Tohru murmurs, so soft that he almost doesn’t hear it.
She’s looking out at the horizon. The sun on her cheek glitters like drops of molten gold in her eyes, her entire face lit up by the sunrise. He studies the way she looks out at it, the soft frown of her lips that’s slowly turning into a gentle smile, so small that he wonders if he knows she’s smiling. The way that her hair falls in front of her face, the way that it curls at her forehead.
He reaches out and brushes her hair behind her ear. She turns to look at him, eyes still bright. “It is.”
He’s not talking about the sunrise, and he thinks that they both know it.
But neither says anything— he just turns away, looking out at the sky, indulging himself in this sunrise. In this moment with Tohru, this peace that he may never find again.
Tohru sighs, and she scoots closer, pressed to his side. She drops her head against his shoulder, and he tries not to tense up. He’s so unused to any kind of physical touch, but even as he thinks that, he can feel himself relaxing into the feeling. He can feel himself softening.
When he’s locked up, Kyo thinks, this is a memory that will keep him going. This is something that he will hold onto hungrily, when he’s starved of everything else. When Akito is the only person that he sees, when he can never find the stars again, he’ll think of this moment. He’ll think of Tohru.
For now, though, he’s just going to watch the sunrise with her, and count each star that fades.
Wish I Were Tohru
>>> a sohma yuki x reader <<<
genre: lil fluff, lil angst??
warnings: none
song: heather by conan gray
synopsis: you’ve been able to get close to the Sohma and become close friends with him. you have feelings for him, but you’re pretty sure he has feelings for Honda Tohru.
a/n: I love this boy and he needs love, I AM HERE TO SUPPLY LOVE 🥺❤️ honestly Yuki is my favorite from Fruits Basket, Haru being a close second and Kyo a close third!! I just don’t see enough Fruits Basket content on here so I thought maybe I’d make some, but this one is kinda shitty ngl. It was long but it just doesn’t feel like my best work. But, I’ve been working on this for a while, so I thought I’d post it anyway heh :)) I guess this means I officially write for Fruits Basket now!!!
Tumblr media
It all started the 3rd of December, when your feelings for Yuki made themselves apparent. On that winter day, you were freezing because you weren’t wearing a warm enough coat and Yuki gave you his sweater while you two walked to school. Your cheeks warmed up quicker than the rest of your body as he smiled at you and wrapped his sweater around your shoulders. With a close-eyed smile, he warmly said that it looked better on you than it did on him; those words struck a cord in your heart, and from then on you accepted the fact that you had fallen for the boy who had become your closest friend.
Of course, you got shit for it from his fan club and they relayed all the rules of the fan club to you during lunch. But after that incident, some of the girls from the fan club began asking Yuki for his sweater, to which he shot them down nicely. That small action didn’t go unnoticed either, and made you feel like he only ever did that for you, and made you fall even harder for the Sohma.
It’s been months since that instance, and you haven’t said anything to him about your feelings because you didn’t want to look like another one of the girls from his fan club desperate for his attention and love. But, seeing as you two have grown closer and you’ve gained enough confidence to do something about your feelings, you decided yesterday that you would confess to him today.
You walk up to him in the hallway during passing period, slightly shaking from nerves, and get his attention by calling his name. He turns around and smiles at you, earning you a glare from the class president who was talking to him earlier.
“Oh, l/n-san, hello!” Yuki greets warmly.
“Hey Sohma-kun! Can I...” you start, but trail off as you see his eyes drift away from yours and land on someone behind you. You glance behind you and see Honda Tohru, your friend, walking down the hall with Uotani and Hanajima. When you look back at Yuki, you can see his eyes follow her figure as she passes, gazing softly. Seeing that makes your heart drop, along with your confidence level.
When he looks back at you, you shake out of your thoughts and quickly say, “uh, sorry, I meant to tell you I’m busy after school so I won’t be walking home with you guys today.”
A look of confusion crosses his features briefly, but is replaced with a smile as he answers with, “Oh, alright. I’ll let Honda-san know.”
You thank him with the best fake smile you can muster before quickly walking down the hall to your next class. When you’re far enough away, your smile drops, as does your gaze. You definitely took notice of how Yuki’s eyes seemed to brighten as he watched Tohru walk by, brighter than the blue sky. It was a look you were sure Yuki never bestowed upon you, but you understand why. Obviously, Tohru is very pretty; definitely a sight for sore eyes. She’s so kind and thoughtful, among other things, Her personality draws people to her, and you can understand why. And because you can understand why Yuki would gaze at her like that, your confidence plummeted and your confession got caught in your throat. But you didn’t want Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru to know your mood was gloomy, which is why you chose to walk home alone today.
They shouldn’t see you in such a down mood stemmed from jealousy; it’s not fair to them and it would only make you as mature as his fangirls. Jealousy is not a flattering color, after all.
On your walk home, the moment replayed in your head. Your brain kept trying to pick apart his facial expression, hoping to find some solace in the evidence of a misunderstanding. Finding optimism in the hopes of a misunderstanding, you walk along the street with your head held high, deciding to try again tomorrow.
.
.
But, oh how unfortunate you’d be this week.
The next morning, there’s news of chilly weather for the rest of the week, right when it was starting to warm up a little. It doesn’t matter much to you, seeing as you grab a nice coat this time to keep you warm. You walk out the door and see Yuki and Kyo standing in front of your house, waiting for you to join them on the walk to school. Their attention turns to you as you approach them, and they greet you. As you greet them back, Kyo shifts his stance a little to reveal Tohru standing behind him with a smile on her face...and Yuki’s sweater pulled over her uniform. The same sweater he had given you to wear in December. The sweater you thought he had only given you to wear.
And yet again, your confidence plummets into the floor. All you can do to keep your mood seemingly high is smile and remain silent on your walk to school. Yuki and Tohru are caught in a conversation the entire way, which Kyo sometimes comments on, but Kyo notices how quiet you’ve gotten and how you won’t make eye contact with any of them. He ruffles your hair, causing you to look up at him in surprise because he doesn’t do that unless he’s trying to lift your spirits.
“Do you wanna...talk after school?” He asks, turning his head away from you.
You smile, knowing he’s trying to give you support. Kyo was always like that; he does care a lot, but he doesn’t always know how to show it.
“Yes, thanks Kyo-kun.”
.
.
“Alright, spit it out.” Kyo says, leaning against the wall.
You sigh, turning your gaze to the ground as you try to explain everything to him. It all sounds really stupid to you when you say it out loud, like it’s not a big deal...but it feels like one. It feels like he’s messing with your emotions, but Yuki’s not the kind to do that intentionally. Once you’re done spilling your guts to Kyo, he continues to stare at the tree in front of him as your hands begin playing with the ends on your skirt.
“It’s stupid, I know. And it’s not like I hate Tohru-chan, I could never. She’s such an angel, I can understand why you’re both so drawn to her. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if Yuki was in love with her. I just...I wish...”
I wish I were Tohru.
That’s what you wanted to say. Jealously really is an ugly shade.
“Uhm, never mind, Kyo-kun! It’s nothing, I promise. I shouldn’t be complaining like this; I shouldn’t burden you with this nonsense, especially when it’s about someone you dislike.” You add quickly, concealing your true feelings with a close-eyed smile.
Kyo looks at you with wide eyes, surprised at your change of attitude. Sure, he doesn’t really care about anything that has to do with Yuki, but when it also concerns you, a close friend, he cares a lot. The fact that you tried to invalidate your feelings pisses him off, but he tries putting that aside as he faces your retreating form.
“W-Wait, y/n-”
“Uhm, let’s go Kyo-kun! I’m sure you don’t want to be here any longer than you already have to.” You smile at him, taking steps towards the school gates.
That fake happiness; the facade you’re hiding behind to mask your hurt feelings, it’s definitely becoming more transparent to Kyo as all the words you uttered about the issue swirl in his mind. If he’s being honest with himself, he’s at a loss for words. He’s never cared about Yuki or what’s going on in his life, so how can he possibly give advice on an issue concerning him?
As you both walk in silence in the direction of your homes, Kyo replays your words over and over in his head, trying to think of something to say to encourage you in some way.
“L-Listen, don’t give up so easily y/n! Just tell him how you feel, I mean you’ve come this far! You know how much I hate that rat, but he’s not...a bad guy. And if I’m wrong and he breaks your heart, I’ll break his stupid face for you!”
You look up at Kyo in surprise, cause you know that must’ve taken a lot out of him to say something semi-nice about Yuki. He doesn’t dare make eye contact; his head faces away from you as his shoulders tense and he balls his fists. Something about how reluctant he is to admit it makes you laugh, and your laugh causes his eyes to widen as he looks at you.
“What? Are you laughing at me?!” He exclaims.
You shake your head with a soft smile on your face, a genuine smile.
“Nope, nothing of the sort. Thanks Kyo-kun, I won’t give up on my confession! Yuki and I planned a study session for tomorrow, so I’ll plan to confess to him then!”
“Good.”
.
.
After you changed out of your uniform at home, you set off for the Sohma residence. It’s not a long walk from your house to Yuki’s, so you slow your pace a bit to take in the scenery and steel your nerves.
After talking with Kyo yesterday, you hadn’t exactly figured out how you were going to tell him, or even when. Lucky for you, the study session you both had planned a week ago was an early one; close to right after school, maybe about an hour or two off?
After trekking up those myriad stone steps, you knock on the door of the Sohma residence. After a couple seconds, you hear Shigure’s voice on the other side of the door as he slides it open.
“Ah, y/n-chan! Hello!” Shigure greets with a smile.
“Hi Shigure-san, is Sohma-kun here?” You ask, smiling back at him.
“Oh, Yuki-kun? He’s been gone for about an hour or so with Tohru-chan. I’m not sure when he’ll be back, but would you like to wait for him here?”
Oh. He’s out with Tohru. Even though you guys had plans. It’s likely that he forgot, but it’s not like you guys made these plans a while ago; it’s been a week!
Your smile falters a bit, but remains on your face as you answer Shigure with, “Oh, I see. Thank you for offering, but I think I’m just going to head home then! Have a good day, Shigure-san!”
You bow to him before turning around and stopping in your tracks. At the top of the steps stands Kyo, staring at you with confusion written all over his face. You walk up to him and smile before trying to walk past him.
“Wait, y/n, what happened? I thought you and the rat were studying today.” Kyo asks, causing you to halt.
You bite your lip, swallowing your emotions, before turning back to Kyo with a pained smile and answering with, “He’s out with Tohru-chan right now. It’s fine, he probably just forgot. I’m just, uh, gonna head home now. I’ll see you tomorrow, Kyo-kun!”
Kyo stands there in disbelief as he watches you walk down the steps. He’s pissed now; after he admitted the rat wasn’t a bad guy, he does something like this. To his close friend, of all people! Don’t you mean more to the rat than anyone else?
Kyo grits his teeth as he runs to the house to ask Shigure where Yuki and Tohru are. Shigure gives him the vague answer of a certain shopping district across the city, and Kyo sets out to find Yuki to set him straight. The image of your sadness seeping into your smile is burned in Kyo’s mind, making him even more upset.
Kyo makes it to the shopping district about a half hour later, running from shop to shop. He asks store clerks if they’ve seen anyone matching the descriptions of Yuki and Tohru, but each one says they haven’t. Hours pass before Kyo approaches the last store and sees the silver-haired male standing outside with Tohru by his side, looking like they’re having a grand time. Kyo runs up to the two and grabs Yuki by the collar of his shirt, causing Yuki to stare at him in surprise and annoyance.
“You stupid rat! How thoughtless are you?!” Kyo starts, tightening his grip on his shirt.
“Let go of me, stupid cat.” Yuki deadpans.
“Does y/n mean nothing to you?! How dare you treat her like trash!”
“What are you talking about?!”
“You ditched your study session with her today to go out with Tohru! Do you enjoy hurting her or something?! Cause you seem to be doing that a lot lately! Do you not care about her?! If you don’t, then why don’t you just say it to her face instead of making her sad every day!”
Yuki’s eyes widen as realization hits; he totally forgot about the plans he made with you today. The guilt he feels outweighs the anger swirling in his chest every time Kyo accuses him of not caring about you. He pushes Kyo off of him and hands Tohru the bags in his hands, all except for one.
“I’m sorry, Honda-san! I have to go!” Yuki apologizes quickly before sprinting out of the shopping district.
Yuki scolds himself for being oblivious to your feelings as he runs down seemingly endless streets. Yuki always cared for you; you were the one close friend he had before Tohru came into his life. Lately he’s noticed that thoughts of you are all that consume his mind at night, and the way he feels different around you than around anyone else. But, our poor Yuki has never felt this way before; he doesn’t know why he feels like this or what to do about it.
But when he heard that he forgot about his plans he made with you, and how that hurt you, he felt like the lowest of the low. How could he skip out on plans with you? How could he hurt you?
The sun begins to set as more tears adorn your notes. You weren’t really sure why you were so upset; it’s okay that Yuki is happy with Tohru. It’s not even a big deal that he forgot about your plans...so why did it hurt most to think he forgot about you? All these doubts begin swarming your head, causing more tears to fall, as you hear knocks on the front door.
You quickly wipe the falling tears as you walk to the door, trying to compose yourself for whichever visitor stood at your door. Your eyes widen as you open the door to see a heavily panting Yuki standing in front of you. You quickly plaster a smile on your face as you attempt to greet him.
“Sohma-kun? Are you alright? What are you doing here?”
“l/n-san, I’m so sorry! I completely forgot about our plans today and went shopping with Honda-san. I never meant to make you sad, I just-”
“Yuki-kun, can we...talk? Somewhere else? Let’s, uhm, go for a walk real quick.”
You grab a pair of slip-ons by the door and head outside, leading Yuki to a nearby kid’s playground. You both sit on the swings and silence envelopes you two as you gather your thoughts. Yuki stares at you as you stare at the ground, waiting for you to scold him or do anything to let him know you were fine.
“Yuki-kun...I still remember the third of December; me in your sweater, you said it looked better on me than it did you. Only if you knew...how much I liked you. How much I still like you. I remember how every girl from your fan club asked you for your sweatshirt, and how I felt special when you turned them down. But, I’ve seen the way you look at Tohru-chan when she walks by. And I get it, Tohru-chan is very beautiful. What a sight for sore eyes, brighter than a blue sky. And I’ve been noticing lately how your gaze on her lingers, and how your face softens when you speak to her. You gave her your sweater to wear, too...not that it matters, I guess. Anyway, as my feelings for you continue to grow, I begin to see...and understand, how and why you like Tohru-chan so much. I mean, she’s an angel! She’s so kind, thoughtful, and caring...I understand why you’d want her. And why you wouldn’t want me. I mean, why would you ever kiss me? I’m not even half as pretty. You gave her your sweater; it’s just polyester. But, you like her better. And I’m able to accept that, as long as you’re happy, Yuki-kun! I just...sometimes...I wish I were Tohru-chan.”
Yuki stares at you in disbelief as you continue staring at your feet, a single tear falling from your eye. He really is oblivious. His brain can’t even begin to compute the misunderstanding going on here. After all, he has feelings for you too. So, just how did it end up so bad, he wonders. He finds it so hard to believe you reciprocate his feelings, and that while trying to find a way to confess to you, he was hurting you instead.
“I-I love you, Yuki-ku-”
Yuki’s body moves as if on instinct, kneeling in front of you with his hands caressing the sides of your face. He smashes his lips against yours, only realizing what he’s doing once he feels you kiss him back. He pulls away almost as quickly as he placed his lips on yours, a blush creeping onto his face. You stare at him with wide eyes as he collects his composure and wipes a stray tear from your eye.
“l/n-san, I...I love you, too. What you saw between Honda-san and I is a big misunderstanding, and I’m sorry not seeing how I was hurting you. I’ve been spending more time with Honda-san this past week because she was helping me figure out a way to confess to you. Shigure suggested making you jealous like the love interests in his romance novels, and I honestly don’t know why I listened to him; I knew it was a terrible idea. But, that’s why Honda-san was wearing my sweater yesterday. When I thought that didn’t work, Honda-san suggested getting you a gift, which is why we went shopping today. I was so caught up in trying to make you happy that I forgot we made plans today. And instead of making you happy, I made you cry. Love isn’t really a feeling I’m fond of; I’ve never really experienced feelings this intense before. It took me a while to realize you were the reason my heartbeat quickened; why my stomach did flips, why warmth would spread in my chest. But when I found myself wanting to be with you every waking hour, I panicked. Truth be told, you’re the person I hold closest to my heart. I don’t let people in...from experience. There’s so much darkness that doesn’t reach the surface, so many things I can’t say just yet. But I will tell you in time, because you’re the person I trust most, and I’m learning slowly how to let people in. In the meantime, the one thing I can say with certainty, is that I love you...and I want to make you happy, if you’ll let me.”
Yuki takes your hands in his and smiles warmly at you. Worried that words will fail you, you nod with a grin on your face. The night air sends chills down your spine as you gaze happily at the boy in front of you. Yuki takes notice of the goosebumps rising on your skin and smirks a little, pulling his hands away from yours to grab the bag on the ground next to him.
He hands it to you while saying, “I have a feeling this’ll come in handy right about now.”
You take the bag from his hands and open it, revealing a familiar sweater. You press it against your chest, smiling at Yuki. You look down at his sweater and realize he's wearing the same one; he got you a matching sweater.
“You just looked so cute when you wore mine...” He smiles shyly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“I love it, Yuki-kun! Thank you!” You exclaim, throwing it on.
It was just polyester, but it now meant more to you than you thought it ever could.
*****
"Who gave you permission to fall asleep?" Yuki hisses as he viciously shakes Kyo awake.
"Nhgh!"
"You idiot, you cant fall asleep now!"
"Look–" Kyo growls as he rubs an eye with the heel of his hand, fighting with all his might against his heavy eyelids to keep them open "–unlike for you, I don't stay up until shitty hours of the night, I actually get a decent amount of sleep on the regular. The fact that you're keeping me up well after" –he squints at the clock on the night stand– "fucking 2 o'clock in the morning is just cruel and unusual punishment."
"You know why you're not supposed to be falling asleep." Yuki says with an icy tone.
Kyo smacks his palms into his face, rubs the heels into his eyes until he sees stars and breathes in.
"Don't hit yourself like that!" Yuki admonishes, "You'll make it worse."
Kyo lets out a long deep frustrated sigh and refuses to open his eyes even as Yuki reaches for him, wrapping his hands around Kyo's wrists and tugging them away.
"Kyo," Yuki says, a warning when Kyo refuses to open his eyes out of spite.
Kyo slowly cracks open one eye and glares at Yuki.
"I'm. Fine."
"Hatori said–"
"Like I give a shit–"
"To not let you–"
"Like he knows anything–"
"Fall asleep–"
"I've had concussions before you stupid rat!"
"You're not cursed anymore!" Yuki snaps, his cheeks flushing with rage.
Kyo blinks up at him with his one eye, still stubbornly refusing to pen the other, shocked into silence as Yuki throws his hands up. "You're not as invincible as you were before! You don't recover as fast! You bruise more easily and it takes longer for you to get back onto your feet when you fall! You're steps are heavier and you're not as fast or agile as you were before! And when you fall and hit your head as hard as you do now and you get knocked unconscious you end up with concussions that don't go away in just an hour!" Yuki flings his book off his lap and stands up from the chair, "Hatori said not to let you fall asleep so guess what asshole, I'm keeping you awake well after the recommended 3 to 6 hours, not because I'm trying to be an asshole but because I'm worried! Now open that second eye or so help me I– I– I'll call Shi-han and have him march down here to keep you awake."
"You wouldn't!" Kyo blanches.
"I will," Yuki hisses, "I've got him and Tohru on speed dial and I'm not afraid to call them both."
Kyo promptly snaps his eye open and stares at Yuki in fear with both eyes.
Yuki clears his throat and settles back into his chair.
"That's what I thought."
*****
Kyo blinks with heavy eye lids, and reaches out a hand through the darkness towards Yuki. He doesn't say anything as he laces their fingers together and gently tugs.
Yuki moves willingly enough, glancing at the clock and throwing a look at the window to see that the sun had begun to rise, his retrieved book falling gently from his lap as he allows himself to be tugged back onto the bed. He's wary at first, when Kyo shifts and wiggles until Yuki is fully onto the bed, his front pressed intimately up against Kyo's back, effectively spooning him.
Yuki sighs and settles deeper, burying his nose into the nape of Kyo's neck to breathe him in, filling his lungs with Kyo's familiar scent and unwilling to let it go, uncompromising in his need to have Kyo be safe and healthy.
It's been well over 10 hours since the incident that left Yuki feeling helpless and frightened in ways he hadn't felt since he was a young boy trapped in a black ink stained room with only the hope of returning the small red hat to keep him going even in those dark times.
"Please be okay," Yuki pleads into Kyo's skin, peppering it with small exhausted kisses.
"I'll be here when you wake up," Kyo whispers back, "I promise. I promise."
Thank you so much Anon this was fun!
A Plateful of Planets and Moons;
a/n: au after s3 ep 8 or Tohru kills Akito, Kyo leads her to the end of world - kyoru road trip au, angst
-
Kyo hates the silence - he’s so used to Shigure’s antics, fighting with Yuki, Tohru’s freak-outs, even Uo and Hana’s scolding. He’s hardly ever noticed how sometimes, the girl beside him can be incredibly quiet.
She’s observant, the way she can pick up on his moods, how her words are always careful and calculated. Sometimes, he thinks he doesn’t know her at all.
“Tohru,” he calls her, but she’s not listening. Her eyes are glued to the floor, staring at it blankly.
It’s the first time he notices a change in her - he can’t name it exactly, just feels like something cold and hard against his spine, like goosebumps on the back of his neck, fingers tugging at his hair -
He’s surprised, he’s never been scared of her before.
“Tohru,” he says again but, she still fails to reply.
(It’s a shitty feeling, he thinks, being ignored).
-
She doesn’t say a word until it’s the evening and they’re in a stolen car, with his hands on the wheel and her head in the clouds.
Tohru doesn’t comment on the fact that he actually committed theft - she doesn’t even ask him where he learned to do that. It’s almost like nothing can shock her anymore, even sitting around in this old pick up that barely worked -
“I didn’t know you could drive,” she catches him off-guard again.
Kyo sighs, just when he thinks he has her all figured out, Tohru corners him.
“I don’t,” he admits, foot pressed against the gas pedal, going faster and faster. “Shishou only showed me a handful of times, when I managed to convince him anyways,” he shrugs, half smiling, looking at her in that usual way that he does.
The type of look that makes her squirm. “Had to learn to do it before Yuki did, you know?”
“Right,” she nods, thinking of all the people they’ve left behind.
She didn’t expect to forget about them so quickly.
“Get some sleep while you can,” Kyo suggests. “I wanna be in the next town by morning and who knows if this hunk of junk will make it until then,” he scoffs, hands firmly squeezing the wheel, unable to let go.
The car shakes, Tohru goes back to being quiet.
She doesn’t feel tired at all, not when the highway lights are beaming down her face, not while her chest is still filled with guilt.
(But, eventually, Kyo’s grunting at the traffic and his fingers tapping at one side are like a melody and they do somehow manage to lull her to sleep).
-
When the car finally breaks down, Kyo has just enough money to rent one motel room, with one bed.
They both stare at it and it’s like a scene in some cheesy romance movie.
“You can take it,” he tells her, settling himself on the couch, arms behind his head and eyelids already feeling heavier and heavier.
Tohru follows him, finding herself sitting at his feet. “Kyo-kun,” she says. “You’ve been driving all night, you should take the bed,” she explains, being insistent.
“I’m fine,” he offers, sounding frustrated.
She’s stubborn though, too stubborn for her own good. Tohru stays put, her fingers folding together on her thighs as she scrunches her nose.
Kyo wonders if she knows how much he notices these little things about her.
“I slept the whole way here - I’m not tired,” she finally tells him - still not meeting his gaze.
He hears her swallow hard and remembers how her hands haven’t stopped shaking since.
“Not tired or,” he trails off, lips pressing into a thin line “Can’t sleep?” Kyo asks.
She pauses before realizing how her heart felt as though it had fallen inside her stomach.
“Both,” Tohru responds, with her shoulders sinking in.
-
That night, she lies awake, staring up at the ceiling.
Kyo snores, softly though, like a small child who had taken a nap after playing outside all day. He sleeps soundly, even the noise of the night doesn’t interrupt him. He looks peaceful, which Tohru doesn’t really understand because she’s never seen him this calm before.
If anything, he should be running far from her, he should be disgusted with her, for what she did.
But instead, he looks like he feels safe around her.
(She spends the rest of the night memorizing his features, trying her best to remember this moment forever - because, for the first time, Kyo had let his guard down around her).
-
In the morning, they’re on a bus to nowhere and everywhere.
“It’s not your fault,” he releases, yawning between his words. “Akito was going to kill me, if you hadn’t stepped in, I’d be dead,” Kyo manages to remind her, just as she’s only begun to put it behind her.
“I know,” Tohru nods, recalling the blood on her hands and the sharpness of that knife. “I don’t regret what I did,” she informs him.
Akito came at Kyo and if Tohru hadn’t taken the weapon from her and twisted it into her chest, she wouldn’t have stopped. Akito would’ve continued until Kyo was dead - and Kyo’s death, in Tohru’s book, was not an option.
Kyo was going to be free, even if she had to kill someone for it.
“You saved me,” he absentmindedly reveals. “I’ll never forget that,” Kyo promises her - hand reaching for hers, almost holding it, almost.
“I-I didn’t do anything remarkable,” Tohru convinces. “I killed someone, Kyo-kun, I killed Akito-san,” the words fall out of her mouth as if they are a testament, as though she is not telling him but herself too. “It’s not admirable,” she croaks.
He wants to say something but that’s before he hears the cracking in her voice.
She’s desperate to be treated normally by him, she doesn’t want to be special.
So he does just that.
-
(Kyo remembers seeing it all - Akito’s dead body on the ground, limp and lifeless. Tohru’s fingers around that knife, the look of murder still fresh in her eyes. But, that’s not the girl he knows, that’s not the one he fell in love with, right?
Tohru Honda is pure of heart, innocent, caring and incapable of causing anyone any harm -
And yet, this was still her. The same girl who got nervous from his temper tantrums had just killed someone for him. So he had to do it, he had to reach for her hand because she was just standing there like her feet had been bolted to the ground. Kyo had to grab her arm and say, c’mon, let’s run.
Let’s runaway and never look back).
-
In a few hours, they are in a nameless place with people who look almost faceless.
He can see the remnants of the old Tohru - when she apologizes for bumping into trees and spends all her money on the kids in the park whining about ice-cream. She’s still there, somewhere deep inside.
Kyo doesn’t know if he prefers her the other way though, all cold and disturbed, because, and he hates to admit this, that that version of Tohru is someone who reminds him of himself.
And he somehow finds that thought rather comforting.
-
She ends up raising money helping out for some carnival game - where they make her wear some ridiculous outfit and he wants to complain but instead he just blushes.
He wants her, he’s wanted her for so long.
Anyway, she makes just enough to get them a pair of train tickets.
“Kyo-kun,” she calls him, wind in her hair, debris from the leaves blowing in her face. “Do you have any idea where we’re going?”
“Away,” he notes. “As far as we can get,” Kyo reassures her, hands on her shoulders, fingers squeezing them tighter.
(It’s only after that she realizes how his hands are shaking too).
“We can’t keep runn-”
“We’re not running,” he interrupts, looking passed her and off into the distance, where the horizon is slowly meeting the sun.
It’s this wonderful time between the planets, where the moon is out too and he turns Tohru around so she can watch it all happen as well.
“We’re not running,” he believes, pointing to the sky.
She wants to trust him, desperately so.
That’s why she looks at what’s before them too. It feels almost endless.
-
They hitch a ride with a friendly local.
She counts the stars, hums unfamiliar tunes, falls as asleep on his shoulder.
The truck owner calls them a lovely couple, says they remind him of himself and his wife when he was younger, gives Kyo some awful tips on love.
He wants to get angry, he wants to get annoyed, however, he finds himself smiling along.
It’s the only time he’s ever felt like a normal teenage boy and not some monster.
-
“How long do you think it’s been?” She’ll question him, like she always does, with that head full of thoughts (and thoughts about everyone except for herself).
“Hard to say,” Kyo murmurs, lying on the grass for tonight. They’ll find real shelter tomorrow, he decides. “I stopped keeping track after the first two sunsets,” he points out.
“Do you ever think of them?” Tohru regrets this already.
She should’ve just kept her mouth shut.
“I should be asking you that,” Kyo expresses.
“My answer is obvious,” she quips, tilting her head to one side. “Uo-chan, Hana-chan, Yuki-kun, Shigure-san, Momiji-kun… even Akito-san,” she counts them on her fingers, like they’re petals on a flower.
“Tohru-”
“I know you’re trying to be kind to me, but please, I beg you to stop absolving me from blame,” she cuts him off, sobbing, raising her hands so she can cower behind them. “I’m a murderer, a killer - you still treat me as though I’m still good but I’m not - I’ve never been good you know? I’ve been so selfish, first with my love for you and now this -”
“Stop,” and, in a moment, he’s looming over her, tearing her arms off her face and wiping her tears away. “Stop saying things like that about yourself, you know they’re not true,” his touch is soft and smooth, like nothing she’s ever felt.
“My love for you,” he finally reveals to her. “It made me selfish too, that’s why I took you, that’s why I ran, because I like having you to myself, because despite these awful circumstances, part of me, is so fucking happy,” he can’t help it, she’s right there, under him, and he just can’t help it.
He leans in to kiss her.
“I’m here with you and it feels like, that’s all that matters,” Kyo confesses, feeling her pull him into another round.
They make out for, what feels like, hours, without embracing, without transforming.
So yeah, fuck it, he’s glad Akito is dead.
-
(Soon enough, this town disappears into the next.
His hand slips into hers more times than he would like to admit).
-
His curse breaks the night they barn hop and end up spending the night on stacks of hay. Usually, when the zodiac members lose their connection to the Sohmas, they’re corresponding animals stop coming to them.
So, it’s more than a bit of a shock that, the night Kyo breaks his curse, there are cats all around them.
Tohru smiles, she always knew that he was different.
That he was special.
-
(And, despite everything, it feels although their next adventure is waiting for them, just around the corner. With his backpack filled to the brim with snacks and drinks, with her sunhat and summer dress on - they get to live the life they never had.
They get to survive. Together.
And that’s the only thing they’ve ever wished for).
Note
What do you think is each character's favorite subject in school?
tohru: not a surprise but baby girl loves home ec!! kind of has to work her butt off studying for her other classes, so she gets to enjoy herself and do something she’s naturally super good at in home ec. loves making little snacks in class for her friends and then sharing them at lunch. the sewing unit takes her fashion game to the next level. when they do a project where they take care of fake babies, she definitely ends up caring for half of the class’s infants like they’re her own. kyo is her partner and everyone teases them about it but she still has a really nice time and thinks kyo would be a great dad :’)) highest home ec grade of all time in their school
kyo: says his favorite is PE but it’s actually math. gets a 5 on the AP calc exam. tells no one but tohru, who then tells everyone and kazuma throws a party and kyo is Not Pleased. isn’t a great math tutor though because he can’t really explain how he gets his answers—he just Knows. checks tohru’s homework for her before she turns it in (read: fixes all her wrong answers when she’s not looking so he can see her huge smile when she gets a good grade back. only feels a little bit guilty). watches math tedtalks. nerd disguised as a jock
yuki: favorite subject is lit!! bullshits his way through class discussions and papers without ever actually reading the books because he’s smart and charismatic. has a premium account on sparknotes. favorite class specifically was one on ancient greek literature and epic poetry—spent the entirety of the class critiquing heteronormative readings of the iliad and taking the piss out of other students because “achilles and patroclus are clearly gay if you have eyes”
kakeru: …...i’ll be real he doesn’t like school lmao. senioritis personified. on his phone during classes constantly. laptop open playing world of warcraft or candy crush or neopets. could not tell you anything the teacher said in the last hour. doesn’t take notes because “i’ve got it all up here yun-yun…..” but doesn’t actually do half-bad on tests. only reason he does homework is because he can pretend to study with yuki while actually just flirting with him. if there’s one subject he doesn’t hate it’s history because he “thinks the fight scenes are fun” (yuki: “you mean world war 1??” “yeah it was exciting”)
uo: autoshop. hates the stereotype that just because she’s a lesbian she must like tools and machinery and automotive tech.....having said that she is a lesbian and she does like tools and machinery and automotive tech. gets a 100 on her project where she fixes a busted up motorcycle, and now she has two motorcycles. all the boys in the class call her senpai and worship the ground she walks on. smells faintly like motor oil all the time but she Absolutely makes it work
hana: creative writing. school is not her thing but she thrives in creative writing because her creativity is 100/10 and her stories are absolutely off the walls. excels in writing spooky yet also homoerotic ghost stories in particular. reads them aloud in class with the lights turned off and a flashlight illuminating her face. has made students cry out of fear. shigure beta-reads her writing. likes to subtly imply that her stories actually happened to fuck with kyo. it works
momiji: band/orchestra!! all the older students lose their minds over how well he can play. first chair violinist from day one. has a solo in every concert; tohru sits front row and films them, always cries. he’s the life of the party at Band Camp(™). even the grumpy bass clarinetists like him. doesn’t get in trouble when he talks waaaaay too much during rehearsal because the teacher loves him
haru: mr space cadet himself isn’t much of a science guy but LOVES astronomy. gets Ds on pretty much every test but he doesn’t care because his mind is expanding. buys a super nice telescope so he can look at constellations at 3 in the morning. develops very specific opinions about each planet. stans the moon. gets really into sleeping at last’s astronomy-themed album. becomes that guy whose personality is “i like space” until the class is over and then he never talks about it again
rin: art! she takes several art classes throughout high school. really loves drawing and painting, but also really likes doing ceramics projects because she likes working with her hands :’)) does a watercolor portrait for tohru as a graduation gift but gets really flustered when tohru sobs into her arms over how beautiful it is. also secretly likes doing little doodles of her and haru—he sees them once in her sketchbook and will never let her live it down
kagura: says her favorite is PE and it actually is PE. goes ham for capture the flag, tends to play too rough when capturing and gets taken out of the game. only person who is actually good at volleyball so she is constantly spiking, setting, and diving for the ball all in the same game, while the rest of her team just kind of fumbles around and tries to stay out of her way. gets first place every time they run the mile even though it’s definitely not a competition. definitely knows her mile time even though it is not a timed activity
hiro: this kid screams history nerd, but like Male History Nerd with a niche interest in military history and very specific opinions about how *insert historical figure* wasn’t actually all that bad. gets his ass handed to him in class discussions on the daily but won’t admit it. is genuinely really smart and has Better Opinions by the time he graduates, so he starts using his history nerd powers For Good as an adult—as in, arguing about inaccurate historical memes on facebook in his free time
kisa: choir. singing stresses her out, but she’s figured out that she can just mouth the words and no one can tell that she’s not actually singing! loves being in the group and hearing the beautiful music around her :’)) everyone is in awe of how cute she is in her lil choir robe. tohru comes to all of kisa’s concerts as well and films them from the front row, also while crying
machi: woodshop. gets sawdust on her clothes and loves the smell. obsessed with digging through piles of splintering and warped scrap wood. loses her damn mind when she gets to use the jigsaw. really enjoys making like…misshapen birdhouses and crooked tables, but woodshop is mostly participation grades anyway so her teacher gives her A’s on all of her grotesque wood creations. she is at peace and is One with the Wood. doesn’t wear safety goggles while chopping wood because she likes Risk
kimi: loves speech & drama. emphasis on the drama. it’s a chance to talk for a long time and everyone has to look at her and listen to her or else they’ll fail!! which is how she likes it. goes three minutes over for every speech but the teacher can’t get her to pause long enough to stop her. comes to auditions in a full professionally-made costume. knows her lines and everyone else’s
nao: AP statistics on the pre-accounting track. has known he wants to be an accountant since he was in diapers. does slightly below average in the class. still studies accounting in college because it’s too big a part of his personality to quit at this point. becomes an accountant. never quite feels fulfilled
String of Fate 2
Tumblr media
Kyo Sohma X Freader
The part 2 that I don’t think anyone on tumblr wanted XD but here it is
Soulmate Au / Red string that connects you to your soulmate
Words: 3,000+
Rating: Teen, Some swearing
Summary: Kyo thinks the universe is against him and the reader finds herself in a terrible nightmare that she hopes will end soon. And... someone should really just ban me from my keyboard already :p
.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
"NO! Stay the hell away from me!"
You replayed the clip in your mind of the orange-haired boy who was your soul mate had jumped out a second-story window to get away from you. Kyo Sohma had ripped your heart out of your chest and smashed it on the ground. And then stepped on it.
Or at least, that's what it felt like.
"I'm home..." You called out to the house as you slipped off your flats. The house smelled good, like freshly baked goods, and a tangy citrus smell wafted out of the kitchen.
"Welcome home honey, how was your first day of school?" Your grandmother asked as she stepped out of the kitchen and smiled at you, wiping her hands on her apron. Your grandfather and Mother were nowhere to b found.
"It was fine, thank you. Where Jiji and Okaa-San? " you asked as you slipped into the kitchen and peeked into the fridge.
" They had to go to the market."
"I'm going to lay down for a bit." You told her, giving her a small fake smile as you passed.
"Not feeling well?"
Well, I met my soulmate, and he jumped out a window to get away from me, so yeah, 'I'm not feeling well.'
"Just tired, big day and all" It wasn't exactly a lie, more like... withholding details.
"Here, baked fresh. You can even eat it in your room. But don't tell you're Jiji." She handed you a muffin, and it was still warm from the oven, it looked delicious.
I wonder if Kyo liked lemon poppy seed muffins?
You felt your mood worsen as you realized that he would probably smack it out or your hand or something even if you got within speaking distance.
"Thanks, Baba." You took the muffin and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
You escaped into your new room and dropped your bag on your floor and placed the muffin on your desk. You didn't have much of an appetite at the moment.
Letting out a large sigh, you flopped down on the bed, grabbing a fluffy pillow and curling yourself around it. Hoping to find some small sliver of comfort.
This wasn't how it was supposed to be.
You lifted your hand and looked at the red string. You had someone finally found him.
Kyo Sohma was your soul mate.
And he had screamed at you to get away before even trying to get to know you. You felt your eyes burn and you clenched them shut and curled your body in tighter as if that could keep you safe.
I'm an idiot... to believe in the soulmate thing...
A true fucking idiot
Your phone vibrated, and you ignored it for a bit.
Til it buzzed again. And again. And again.
Letting out a huff you reached over and grabbed your phone, the screen lit up, and you had 4 messages. All from (BF/N).
-Miss you already!-
-Hope your making friends!-
-Went for ice cream today, wish you were here!-
The fourth message was a selfie of her and her soul mate, Katie. Both had over the top sad faces, and if you were in a better mood, you might have giggled, but all you felt was a slight bitterness. She had found her soulmate. And she's pretty sure Katie didn't scream at her to getaway.
-Katie wants to know how the cafeteria food at your school was like?-
-Also.. are you wearing a school uniform? If yes, we need pictures ;) -
You decided to answer all these questions later, and as for the uniform selfie... maybe never.
Right now, you just wanted to sleep.
Maybe this is all a bad dream
.-.-.-.-.-.-.
"Is anyone gonna tell me why Kyo came home early today?" Shigure asked the two teens as they sat down for dinner. There was a place made for Kyo, but he had yet to come down from the roof.
Tohru had tried to get him, but he was in a fouler mood than usual, snapping at her and telling her to 'go away.'.
" We had a new student today, and the stupid cat threw a fit and ran away." Yuki scoffed before taking a bite.
"Oh, a new student, that's exciting. What's he do to make Kyo snap?" Shigure enjoyed a bit of gossip.
"SHE didn't do anything. The Idiot just screamed at her and jumped out the window." The student council president had spent a good ten minutes apologizing on Kyo's behalf, but there was something about the crestfallen look on the girl's face that made him want to slap the Cat for being so rude.
" Poor (L/N)-San, she looked completely devasted." Tohru had been at the other end of one of Kyo's angry moments, and it could be disheartening and a little scary. She hoped that the girl wasn't taking it too hard.
"I think anybody would be upset had someone acted that way towards them...I wonder what made our Kyo snap on her? Was she trying to hug him or something" Shigure asked, but the teens shook their heads to say 'no.' Tohru couldn't erase the look on the new student's face and the way she stared sadly down at their hand and to the desk that Kyo had occupied all day.
Tohru had wanted to try to make friends with her during the lunch break, but she had disappeared, and when (y/n) had returned, her eyes were red and slightly swollen.
" You should try to befriend her Tohru-Kun, it must be scary being a new student. It sounds like she could use a friend like you." Shigure put forward, a bright smile on his face. Yuki didn't trust it, but then again, he rarely trusted the Dog.
"Oh! That's a great idea, I'd love to be her friend!" Tohru felt empowered with Shigure's words.
"And maybe invite her over sometime. I'd love to meet a cute foreign highschooler." This earned Shigure to have chopsticks thrown at him by Yuki, who called him deplorable as he did so.
The brunette didn't really notice the two cousins clashing as she thought of how she could introduce herself, maybe make extra food for lunch so she could share it with (y/n).
Tohru was going to make friends with the new student and make her feel welcomed. And also try and tell her that Kyo wasn't all that bad.
She thought of the orange-haired boy on the roof and hoped he would feel better soon and hopefully make things right tomorrow.
.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
It wasn't a dream, you had 'met' your soulmate, and he had no intention of seeing you.
Kyo didn't return..... it had been two days, and he had yet to return to school.
His cousin, the 'prince' of the school, Yuki Sohma had apologized for Kyo's actions. Two people couldn't be any more different in terms of looks and personality.
Well... not like you really knew anything about Kyo's personality other then he might have a temper.
Yuki was another very handsome boy, and you could see why he was so popular, but he just didn't light a fire in your heart the same way Kyo had with one simple glance.
You had asked Yuki if his cousin was okay, but the grey-haired boy simply told you that Kyo was just...like that? And that you shouldn't worry about him. He had said so while smiling, contrasting his harsh words, and you'd be lying if you said that it didn't creep you out a little bit.
They must not get along...
Tohru, a friendly girl with large kind eyes from your class, had been quick to befriend you, offering you a place with her friends during lunch hours. She even tried to defend Kyo's actions, stating that he really was a wonderful person.
Him being a 'wonderful' person somehow made you feel worse. You told Tohru that it was nothing for her to worry about, but she didn't seem convinced.
Her two friends Uotani and Hanajima were... interesting but very lovely people. Your ebony-haired classmate could even sense 'waves' and had outed you to her friends about the red string wrapped around your finger. You wondered what else her mysterious powers were capable of. Tohru was enthusiastic about you having a soul mate. Apparently, her parents had been soul mates and had been absolutely crazy for each other.
Your own enthusiasm was non-existent. Now you were just worried about Hanajima being able to connect the strings through her 'superpowers' when Kyo did return.
If she had been able to sense yours, then it was possible she was able to detect Kyo's and knew what he was to you. Not only were you heartbroken, but you were also now aware that someone else knew about your humiliating rejection.
Things at home were... fine. You didn't tell anyone what had happened and tried to put on a brave face. But your Mother, who was usually aloof to how you were feeling, had noticed that something was wrong. Her idea of a fixer-upper?
A shopping trip. At least your Mother tried.
Plus, your grandmother kept trying to feed you baked goods, but you just weren't hungry. Their hearts were in the right place, and they wanted to make you feel at home.
But how were you supposed to tell them why you were sad?
.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
As you walked through the school hallways, you wondered if Kyo would show up. He was missing so much class.
Even if you were hurt by him, and you should be angry at the boy. You couldn't do it. All you wanted was answers.
Why did he run away? Why was he so mad at you? How was he doing? Was he okay? What were his interests? What kind of food did he like? Was his hair as soft as it looked?
Perfect. I'm thinking about the guy who screamed at me to 'get away'. Maybe I should ask if I can take his homework to him, perhaps we can talk and - Oh?
You slid open the classroom door, and there he was. His beautiful orange-hair seemed to be glowing in the morning light.
Day four and the boy who successfully ripped your heart of your chest had finally returned to school. The boy at the other end of your red string sat in his desk with his arms crossed and staring out the window. You held your hand over your heart to try and calm it down and took a deep breath.
It's now or never...maybe this time... will be better
"Um... hello" You tried to greet him as you approached his desk, hopeful that this time he wouldn't try to leap out the window.
"Don't." He snapped, not even turning to look at you.
" But I-" You tried again, but this time he turned and gave you a hard glare, but you stood your ground, waiting to hear his side. You could hear a few other students in the room whispering as they looked over at the two of you.
"Come with me." He said, and he got up from his desk and left the classroom, you quickly hurried after him, a little spark of hope in you as you fell in step behind him. He would look back at you every so often, and every time you looked into his eyes, you felt your heart jump, a fluttering feeling in your stomach. You even smiled at him when you caught him looking back.
His orange eyes widened at your smile, and he let out a huff and turned around, continuing to lead you up a staircase. You couldn't help but notice that the tip of his ears were slightly red.
Maybe he's had to time to cool off, maybe he was overwhelmed with meeting me, maybe..... just maybe
He opened a door, just leaving it open long enough for you to follow. He had led you to the roof, you felt a small breeze and closed your eyes, the fresh air helping to put you a bit at ease. You were feeling lighter already.
Maybe everything's going to be alright...
You turned to Kyo, waiting for him to say something and you were met with his back. His shoulders were tense, and you could sense his agitation but assumed it was just nervous.
"Here's how this is going to work, You're gonna stay the hell away from me. Don't talk to me, and I'm gonna pretend that you don't exist." He declared, and you felt your blood go cold. The light hope in your heart had grown and been struck down all within a moment. Kyo took a deep breath and then turned to face you, his eyes glaring daggers into you. The fluttering feeling of butterflies had turned to spiders crawling.
Kyo Sohma didn't want to even try or be friends or anything. Was it so easy to squash my feelings as if I were an ant beneath his shoes. Did the universe really think that this was the man I was meant to be with?
" I don't understand.." you whispered... it wasn't even towards him, but he just sneered at your comment. As if you were supposed to be understanding.
" I never wanted this. To me, this soulmate thing is bullshit. It's a curse. I don't want you." He spat, his words felt like sharp knives, and you had no shield to protect you.
" Ya should've stayed wherever the hell you came from but because I have the worst luck in the world... you're here. Do me a favour. Stay. Away. From. Me." He sounded it out, slowly, word by word, as if he was speaking to a child.
Am I truly that disgraceful in his eyes? Does he even see me as a person? Did he ever care about the person at the other end of the string?
You were cursing Tohru in your mind for getting your hopes up because she was wrong. Kyo Sohma was NOT a wonderful person.
The universe was also wrong. Life was too short to be treated this way. Your Mother wasn't going to take any more shit from your father, and you weren't going to take it from Kyo Sohma.
"..fine... asshole." You muttered under your breath as you were about to walk away.
"What did you say?" He grabbed you by the wrist, and you tried to ignore the jolt of electricity that went through you. His touch was warm, and you were able to take in his gorgeous tangerine eyes up close. It was a shame that they were glaring into yours.
Why did he have to be good looking?
"I said, FINE! I won't bother you. I'll leave you the hell alone. Now, do me a favour.... Let. Go." Your words felt bitter coming across your tongue, tears were burning in your eyes, but you stood your ground.
"Tch." He didn't say anything, he released you and stormed off the roof through the door you had come through. Leaving you alone.
You never prepared yourself for this. This pain. It was worse than anything. Worse than the time you tripped down the concrete stairs and broke your arm. Worse than the time you went swimming in the ocean and was stung by a jellyfish. Worse than having to leave your childhood home behind.
"It's a curse."
Those were his words.
You wanted to run away. But there was a proud part of you that felt like if you did that, then Kyo would win whatever battle you two were having.
How did it come to this?
Hot, salty tears flowed from your eyes and down your cheeks, wails left your throat, and you cried like a child. Any hope you had was gone. Kyo Sohma wanted nothing to do with you.
And if that's what he wanted... then fine. You would not speak with him or even look at him. And once high school was over, you would never look back.
You grabbed your handkerchief and tried to calm yourself down, hoping you had enough time to pull your self together before the first bell rang.
Kyo's words just kept ringing in your ears.
" I don't want you "
.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Kyo marched into the boys' bathroom, narrowly colliding with another student it was coming out. The stranger was about to yell at him to watch where he was going, but after seeing the wild look in the orange-haired boy's eyes decided it was better to stay quiet and pretend it didn't happen.
The frustrated boy went the sink and gripped the edge, trying to breathe and calm himself down. He ran the tap and splashed his face with water, hoping it could help wash away the terrible feeling that was running through his body.
He was sweating, but his body felt cold like he had a fever or something. The boy thought maybe he caught a cold or something by spending the last two nights under the stars, trying to get his head straight and come up with the best way to solve his 'problem.'
Rehearsing, going over his words. He wanted to make (Y/N) want nothing to do with him. Push her away. Make her wish that she had never met him.
And by the broken look in her eyes and the hollow sound in her voice, he succeeded. (Y/N), his soul mate, was going to hate him and stay away from him.
A wave of nausea flew over through him and leaned over the sink, retching what little was in his stomach, dry heaving.
He couldn't get her face out of his head. Kyo wanted to run his hands through her hair, wondering if it was as soft as it looked. Her small smile that was directed at him when he looked over his shoulder. God, it was beautiful, and it made his heart race and made him feel like he could take on anything.
But then...
The look on her face when he told her to stay away, when he lied. Telling her that he didn't want her. Kyo felt his heart drop to the floor, and his skin felt ice cold. Her large eyes filled with sorrow, a profound sadness that dropped him into this bottomless pit of hopelessness. The string around his pinky no longer felt tight, but there now seemed to be a heaviness to it. Weighing him down.
Everything hurt now
But this was all for the best... right?
It was always hopeless, to begin with, so better to hurt her now rather than give her any sense of hope that they could be together.
Because he was cursed, and she was free to live her life without him.
She was beautiful and glowed like the sunshine. She could have anyone she wanted. Kyo knew it couldn't be him. That it shouldn't be him.
The cursed teenager looked down at the beads encircling his wrist and to the red string wrapped around his pinkie. Taunting him.
      .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. To Be Continued? .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Hi Sophie. Love your blog and podcast! I am here to ask your headcanon on what do the fb characters do on their daily life during quarantine to cope aha :))
thank u!! we love getting messages that ppl are listening!! <3
tohru - starts doing every home improvement project she can think of. marie kondos and reorganizes the kitchen (which pisses off shigure when he cant find shit in the middle of the night, not that he brings it up), replaces all the paper on the doors, moves all the furniture to clean behind, yuki finds her in his bedroom organizing his sloppy ass drawers. shigure finally stops her when she tries to repaint. she facetimes uo and hana every single day and cries every single day. there are multiple instances of kyo walking into the kitchen while tohru is cooking a gigantic meal through tears and has to comfort her
yuki - honestly i think he kind of enjoys it at first. he gets to sleep in every day and doesnt have to interact with his classmates, but him and kyo start getting on each other’s nerves pretty fast. i think he catches up on his reading list and gets some good gardening done, maybe even expands it a little since he has the time. he asks tohru to teach him how to cook something and he learns how to boil noodles!
kyo - gets swole. like seriously swole. he def was one of those ppl who went into quarantine with a goal and then actually hit that goal and then just, like, kept going? but he also does a fair amount of lying on the floor in the living room and staring at the tv. also he becomes a total agoraphobe and is suuuuper paranoid about getting covid and is even MORE paranoid about giving TOHRU covid yet does the grocery shopping with yuki anyway (tohru stays home)
haru - nerfs his sleep schedule immediately playing video games. is awake 16 hours a day for a week and then sleeps for three days straight. perpetually stoned
momiji - starts 20 different hobbies and tries to do them all at once and burns out super fast. the one he sticks with is sewing and he ends up making a bunch of new clothes and gets rly creative with it !
shigure - honestly quarantine is not all that different from his regular daily life as a nightmare-schedule freelancer. the only difference rly is that he now has to deal with the kids all day every day. stays in his room most of the time because he’s one tom and jerry fight away from bashing both their heads in
akito - yeah honestly this isnt too different from their daily life anyway. reads a lot. was one of those people that started getting perilously horny like four weeks in
hatori - quarantining with akito. ready for death. hopes he gets covid. spends his days listlessly reading the news and staring at the same page of his novel
Fruits Basket - Vol 21
"What do you have there?"
"A knife!"
"NO-"
That's probably all I can say about this one lmao
Kyo's still thinking back to when he met Kyoko, and how he felt about her as a kid. It was strange to him, in a way, but very welcoming, because unlike the majority of people around him, she treated him like a spunky kiddo(that's what she called him because he never told her his name) who seemed to have a hard life, but still seemed nice. In other words, Kyoko treated him kindly, something that Kyo had only experienced with Kazuma, which is extremely heartbreaking, oh my god.
But that only made what happened later hurt that much more, when she died. He heard her say that she won't forgive him, and those words have stuck with him to this day. After Kyoko's death, Kazuma took Kyo to the mountains, "to train". There wasn't much training, honestly, because Kyo was thrown into the depths of just,, self-hatred, mourning, regret, all of it. The only way he could get out of it was to place blame elsewhere, and that elsewhere was Yuki. It was easy, to be expected, almost encouraged in a way. It's not even that Yuki did anything in particular (I doubt they were even around each other enough for Yuki to actually do anything to Kyo), it's just that it was easier. And that helped Kyo enough that Kazuma let him return back home, which is around the time that Tohru showed up at Shigure's house, and the start of the series. When Kyo first saw Tohru, he couldn't believe it. He just wasn't allowed to forget what had happened, was he? It was interesting, in a way, to finally meet the girl that Kyoko was always talking about, to finally hear her voice rather than a picture, anecdotes, and a lonesome dinner. But it also hurt. In the end, he says he won't forgive himself, and he doesn't expect Tohru to forgive him either, for holding all of this back.
Tohru doesn't like that though, only having those two options: to forgive or not. It's really not that simple. She doubts that her mom meant that, "I won't forgive you", because she wasn't that kind of person, and even if she did mean it, Tohru's going against it, because her love for Kyo overpowers her love for her mom. She screams at him that she loves him, regardless of all of that. It doesn't matter dude! He can't believe it though, and he runs off, with Yuki, who overheard a portion of all of this, chasing after Kyo, with the spirit of "jfc you fucking moron get back here".
Oh remember Akito? And how she was thinking about Tohru? And how she has a knife? Well, she just entered the chat. 🔪🔪
She enters the chat by vaguely saying that the curse is breaking, to Tohru, who at the moment is partially occupied with thinking how fucking miserable Kyo looked before he ran off, but now Akito's here. (That sounds bad, like a "now Tohru has to deal with Akito 🙄" thing, that's not really what I mean. Tohru's just going through a few things at the moment) She asks Tohru if she's happy now, now that Akito has became the outsider, the loner, the bad guy, after waltzing into her life (and the lives of the Sohmas) and completely disrupting it, without a speck of dirt on her hands. Tohru's putting two and two together and steps toward Akito, asking if she was there the whole time (at this point Tohru did not know Akito had a knife), and oh jeez Akito just slashed at Tohru. Despite Akito yelling at Tohru to stay back, Tohru starts thinking of things through Akito's lens, how this whole time, Akito must have been so lonely. She was marveled for being God, but because of that (and her lashing out but hush), no one ever wanted to be around her. She was told that she was above everyone else, and she treated them as such, and they did the same back to her.
Tohru mentioned how Akito always spoke of permanence, because it was the only thing that Akito ever had to hold onto. Akito lashes out at that (i don't think she cut Tohru, but Tohru does end up having two cuts, so i think this was the second, both times they were just on her arms), saying that Tohru doesn't know what she's talking about, she won't fall for Tohru's crap! She can't be won over by nice little words like everyone else (are you sure about that dude). Tohru doesn't really deny it, she agrees that she is dirty, and bad. She wished for her own permanence, to forever be with her mom, but that didn't and couldn't happen. She says that realizing this is very lonely, realizing that you can't make anything stay, you can't grab onto it with all your might and beg for it to stay, it will move on in its own time. This ends up further upsetting Akito, thinking back to Akira and what he said to her as a child. She screams that she doesn't want to be left behind, alone in this huge world of strangers who don't know or care about about, or need her. She's terrified, and she says there's no saying that someone could ever love her, she'll be all alone when the curse breaks. Tohru then offers to be her friend. (Honestly this scene is kinda heartbreaking for me, seeing Tohru all scuffed up with tears in her eyes, offering to be Akito's friend. This girl does so fucking much all the time, regardless of the fact that she just heard that the boy she loves was involved in some way to her mother's death, her personal crisis of Kyo becoming more important to her than Kyoko, and now she's cut up and bloody, probably soaked through by the rain, trying to console a thoroughly upset Akito, like,, jfc Tohru)
Akito smacks Tohru's outstretched hand, saying she's mocking her, that when Akito starts to get upset, she'll get irritated, when Akito complains, she'll get mad, she'll hate Akito, she'll abandon her, but Tohru just puts out a hand, offering to be Akito's friend regardless. And once Akito realizes that Tohru would totally be there for her if she needed Tohru, Tohru literally falls off a cliff. Kinda. Do you remember back in the beginning of the series when Shigure mentioned that the ground is kinda unstable, and that's why there was a landslide? This is the same kind of thing, the ground crumbled underneath Tohru, and she fell. The first time I read that scene, I wasn't entirely sure if it was a metaphorical thing or not. It was not.
After Tohru fell, Akito just started screaming (fair enough, honestly), screaming for someone to come help, anyone! Shigure and Yuki come (and off in the undisclosed distance, Kyo also hears the cries), and Shigure actually asks Akito if she pushed Tohru off. Akito manages to explain what happens, and Yuki calls an ambulance. Shigure takes Akito back to the house, and a little bit later Kyo comes back to the house, and overhears Shigure explaining things to Hatori over the phone, and fuckin bolts over to where Tohru is. She's unconscious, scuffed, with cuts and blood on her, and holy shit, remember that one dream Kyo had a while back? Yeah, well, this looks wayyy too close for comfort to that dream, and Kyo's pretty freaked out. Distantly, Tohru can hear him crying, and she's just like, "Don't cry, it'll be okay, there's no reason to cry." She thought about how she worried that her love for Kyo ended up hurting him, and she was sorry for that, but she couldn't help it. It's revealed that Tohru fell in love with Kyo around the time of the Dark Form/True Form thing was going down, I think when Kazuma first showed up. She wishes for Kyo to be able to live a full life, even if it's hard, even if they aren't together. (Very emotional stuff, really.)
The next day, Yuki sees Tohru's grandfather at the hospital (who is visiting Tohru as well), and he asks about "that orange-headed boy", and Yuki says he was just an idiot that has bad timing, and he made Tohru cry. He can make her happy better than anyone, and he did that. He stopped himself short, but Tohru's grandfather was like, "About that," and presumably told Yuki to fucking brawl with Kyo, because that's exactly what he did after hearing from Haru that Kyo didn't try to see to Tohru. Before the fists went flying, Yuki asked Kyo about it, and Kyo said it was for the better, that all he'd do was hurt Tohru further. He couldn't protect Tohru when she needed it, he didn't want to do further harm.
Now the scene has shifted to the hospital, with two people being stuck in bed: Tohru and Kureno. Kyo tries to see Tohru, to apologize, to talk, something, but Hanajima and Uotani are not having it. Hanajima points out that apologizing wouldn't even mean anything, because Tohru doesn't blame Kyo for anything that happened. Hanajima says that there's other things that Kyo needs to do before he can see Tohru. Certain Things, and honestly I'm not sure if she was just bullshitting and using her ominousness to her advantage or if she actually knew something, but Kyo agreed (internally, anyway): there was something he had to do before seeing Tohru again.
Yuki might as well have said that was complete and utter bullshit, who does Kyo fuckin think he is? A goddamn superhero, able to fly in the second Tohru's in trouble? Doesn't he see the way Tohru acts around him? The way she smiles whenever he's near? Kyo's shocked by that, but he doesn't like the way Yuki said it, so he asked why couldn't Yuki do it (this is actually out of order but shh), he's already so perfect and shit. Basically, he's finally saying that he has always envied Yuki, because it just seemed like he got everything that Kyo wanted, especially when they were kids. Through the flying kicks and punches, Yuki says the same thing, but in the end, he can only be himself, same thing for Kyo. Neither of them (or anyone else) can be anything other than themselves, and sometimes there are things that only one person can do. In this case, only Kyo can kinda,, make her happy, I guess. I think that was the implication, which is nice. Kyo then goes off to see Tohru at the hospital, but the visiting hours are over, but y'know it's the thought that counts, right?
(Meanwhile) (btw how many times do these kinda things wreck Shigure's house like can they not take these things outside or something)
Tumblr media
On the part of Uotani and Hanajima (and really everyone else who is visiting Tohru at this time), there's another level to keeping Kyo out: it's that everyone kinda knows that Tohru might be a little messed up if she did see Kyo again so soon after that whole shpeal that happened before Akito showed up. Tohru had a bomb dropped on her, and then she helped Akito calm down, and then she fell off a cliff; she didn't have any time to process the things that Kyo told her, especially that last line of his, the whole, "I'm disillusioned" thing, which all the significance that I personally can find within it is that he said that he wouldn't be disillusioned when Tohru was telling him about her father, but there really seems to be a bigger thing here that I'm not getting, idk. Anyway, there's that whole mess as well. Besides from that, there also seems to be this idea, I guess, that once Tohru is around Kyo again, they won't really be apart, so this is kinda like the last few moments with just Tohru? Or something? Hanajima and Uotani were talking about how Kyo's gonna "steal Tohru away", and seeing as Tohru is their close friend, I suppose it makes sense, from a selfish perspective (but not in a bad way), that they would want to "have" Tohru as long as they could.
Meanwhile (y'know that 60s Batman scene transition thing? That's always what I imagine when I write that, with the music included. Imagine how annoying it'd be if I put in a gif of it every time), Akito is having a Struggle Moment. She's at the hospital, and holy fuck is she guilty about stabbing Kureno, which is nice she totally should be it'd be really concerning if she wasn't, and Momiji pops up and asks if Akito came to see Kureno or Tohru (oof that guilt it's now been doubled), and Akito bursts out with confusion: why doesn't Kureno blame her?! He could've (should've-- wait what) blamed her, gotten angry, something?? Momiji says that it's because Kureno and Tohru (because Akito also visits Tohru) are that kind of stupid: they just don't blame people for things, they're always allowing for forgiveness. So why question it, why not just accept that Kureno isn't angry at her, isn't blaming her, just accept the kindness.
Akito thinks back on when she visited Kureno, and he asked her if she was okay. She thinks that if she had said she wasn't, that Kureno would have gone back to her side, and stayed with her, despite what she had done to him. He would stay with her until she no longer needed him, because he just has that kind of unselfish kindness. This kindness, in retrospect, doesn't make Akito feel much better though, as she thinks (realizes?) that she's basically been killing him, this whole time (before the stabbing, of course). No apology could fix this, no matter what Kureno would say, Akito wouldn't ever stop feeling bad for what she had said and done, not to him but to the other Juunishi as well (I suppose the Sohma family as a whole, honestly). Momiji just says that Akito has to take care of Kureno from now on, and to make sure that she doesn't do something like this again. Then he tells Akito a story (i don't get to hear it and that makes me quite sad ngl) and later Akito visits Tohru. But that'll be talked about later. Now we're talking about
(60s Batman transition sound) Yuki! And the other people in the student council. Kakeru mentions how the school is abuzz with what happened to Tohru, and how rumor has it that Kyo's the one who got her in the hospital. (Yuki doesn't really deny that, btw) Unsurprisingly, it's not really something that he has talked about, seeing as it's not very casual conversation, and it is a bit of a downer, but he realizes that he's not too upset by it. (By that I mean the overall recent series of events, not solely Tohru's accident) I guess violence is the answer, sometimes.
Kimi then asks what Yuki's relationship with Tohru even is, and Kakeru, unfiltered as usual, just drops, "She's like his mom, in his mind" as if that wasn't something that Yuki was struggling with for a long time??? Whatever dude, but one day Yuki'll probably have his revenge. At any rate, there were a lot of shots to Machi doing her thing, so if it wasn't already clear from the story so far, Yuki likes Machi. If you hadn't picked that up, it's a whole thing.
Anyway, later on Yuki and Kakeru are looking for get-well gifts for Tohru, and Kakeru just straight up says, "If I don't know what to give to someone, I'll just choose something I like, so that if they don't like it, I can take it, and I'll like it," which, as it turns out, Machi does the same thing. (That comes later but it's the not most important thing so shh) After getting a gift, Kakeru says that he's going to visit Tohru, but he insists on doing it alone, and so Yuki wanders off, walking down the street (he's makin his way downtown, walkin fast, faces pass), and he thinks about how, when he was in big crowds, he used to wonder, if he disappeared, would anyone really notice? Now though, that's not really a worry. He knows that there is at least one person who would notice, who would be worried if he disappeared. And holy shmow, he just found the perfect gift for her! He calls up Machi, and they meet up at a train station, I think, I'm pretty sure it's a train station idk I've never been in one, and it turns out that she got a gift for him as well. (It's fertilizer, remember back to that scene, with the,, yeah. Ok.)
The gift is a big Mogeta doll (probably like a stuffed animal), like the one that Ayame had in his shop, except he had the gall to write on it? Machi said that it was a limited exclusive item, but Yuki managed to find it (for a fair price too, apparently), and she really likes it. She says she'd like to thank Tohru for what she's done to help Yuki become who he is presently, that she's really glad that she was able to meet Yuki, because without him, she definitely wouldn't be the person she is today. It was some super soft stuff, there were plenty of "aw"s when I read that whole interaction. They're so fucking cute, it's great.
Anyway, other than Kakeru asking Hatori what he ate to look that handsome (which is something I still can't get over), there wasn't much else to the book, so I'll finally end this (I took several days in between writing this it's inexcusable). Yay ✨✨
A slightly naughty headcanon ❤️
Kyo’s spent some time over at Shishou’s, and Tohru happily decides to pay a visit, bringing homemade onigiri with salmon centers (of course). Kunimitsu meets her by the gate and takes her straight to the dojo. “They’ve been practicing since this morning,” he says merrily, smiling down at her. “I don’t think they’ve taken a real break for hours!
They stop in front of the sliding doors. Tohru smiles at the sound of Kyo’s voice, shouting with conviction through the complex moves. “Ah! Onigiri! I’ll take these to the kitchen for you. No food allowed in the dojo of course!”
“ Arigato, Kunimitsu-San!” She chirped happily as he made his way around the corner swiftly. She was left alone to make her introductions. Something told her to proceed slowly, to be as quiet as possible as not to interrupt their session.
Tentatively, she slid the door open to a crack.
‘K...Kyo-kun...’
There he was. His bare chest heaved with heavy respiration. And he had a look of determination on his face that shook Tohru to her core. Shishou paced back and fourth, planning his next form wisely. Kyo was ready. That look was paired with a smirk that could only come from past triumph. Her eyes roamed over the sinewy lines of his body, his arms twisting with feline grace into an offensive pose.
And they were at it again.
Tohru’s eyes danced between their forms, a punch here, a kick there....it was so fast! But Kyo was so beautiful in the execution of his movements.
Her heart had adored him for so long, but other parts of her body were beginning to take notice of him.
“HYAH!” He shouted dealing a would-be fatal blow to Shishou’s neck. The sound reverberated in her ears causing a small gasp to escape her lips. Her body began to.....tingle with an unknown emotion. The closest thing she could relate it to was excitement.
There was a secret part of her that enjoyed seeing Kyo like this. Unfettered and confident. Powerful and skilled. Yuki aside, he truly was a formidable opponent. And Shishou agreed, for he called an end to this sparring match and clasped Kyo on the shoulder approvingly, ever the proud parent.
And then their eyes locked. His gaze was so intense nowadays, sometimes she had to turn away and blush from the sheer magnitude of his unspoken feelings. But this time, she looked directly at him. Her cheeks still flushed with rose however.
“Ah! Tohru-kun! A delightful surprise as always,” Shishou waved a hand towards her, but she was still focused on Kyo, who reminded her of a cat ready to pounce on his prey.
She had to snap back quick. She moved to push the sliding door open further, but almost tripped after realizing she must have widened the doorway without realizing it. They had a clear view of her in her short pink sundress hair free of ribbons.
“Ah! Shi....Shishou-San! K..Kyo-Kun! Sugoi!” Tohru clasped her hands together in order to convey her gratitude. “ What a thrilling spar! Kyo-Kun looked so coo...confident! You must be so proud!” Tohru gestured to Shishou, who made his way toward the exit.
“It’s true. Kyo is well on his way to becoming a master.”
Kyo lit up inside.
“When he perfects discipline,” he gently reprimanded.
“Hey, I got PLENTY disipline.” Kyo retored, grabbing the towel folded on the floor and securing it around his neck.
But Shishou had already left, leaving the two of them alone.
Kyo, emboldened from his latest victory, turned his attention to Tohru, who was sporting a lovely blush on her cheek bones.
Look, mom, I finally finished the damn challenge two months late!! Ao3 FFN
Kyo has a crooked nose. It was one of the first things Tohru noticed once she had full access to staring at his face, though she had spent plenty of time before they were ever together staring at his face as well. The place where the bridge of his nose deviates from its traditional path is a dead giveaway.
For a long time, it really bothered her. When she first reached out to gently trace the jagged slope with her finger, Kyo smiled at her. A side effect of having it broken at least a dozen times in his life.
It wasn’t the shape or aesthetics of his nose that were the problem, it was the fact that anyone would ever dare hurt him. She cupped his cheek in her hand and frowned, trying to ignore her temper simmering under her skin. It wasn’t as if she actually had the capability to protect him, especially not physically, but nevertheless.
Kyo assured her that he thoroughly deserved to have his nose broken. He reminded her that a handful of times it happened was when she was actually present. It was all Yuki and Haru, he told her. Coupla’ assholes. Although, of course, he at least broke Haru’s nose in return. He never did get the chance to return the favor to Yuki. Maybe one day. Either way, Kyo just laughed it off.
Shishou showed her a picture of what he dubbed ‘the worst Kyo has ever looked.’ It was a middle school class picture. He stood in the back row, a scowl on his face. His eye had a deep, purple crescent moon underneath it. It was taken only a year before they met.
His nose wasn’t the only giveaway of the tumultuous childhood he had. He had plenty of tiny scars all over his hands, proof that he’d been known to punch through unsuspecting windows. He had a puckered spot on his shin, which he blamed on Kagura knocking him into a boulder. But just below Kyo’s left eyebrow laid a deep groove, only about a centimeter long.
Tohru only received a very cursory explanation of that mark. It was clear Kyo was not keen to talk about it. A permanent reminder of the abuse he’d received before the age of five. His mother had a matching one on her cheek. A dinner gone awry; that was all Kyo wished to explain. Tohru didn’t need the details anyway.
The marks on his body made her want to cry. She couldn’t stomach the thought of anyone intentionally hurting him. And she especially couldn’t stand the physical reminder of what he’d suffered mentally as well. The years of ridicule, abuse, victimization, and fear he had to face. Sometimes it made her cry to think about. While Kyo would assure her that he was fine, that it was all in the past, that he’d let it all go, it still tore at her heart.
“Everyone’s got scars, Tohru,” her mother had said to her in middle school. “Even if you can’t see ‘em, they’re there.” Her mother assured her that scars weren’t a bad thing. They were just evidence of the past. “It’s what you do after you’re hurt that matters.”
But if those physical reminders of his past pain bothered Tohru, her scars bothered him even more.
Her hands were littered with tiny pockmarks. Burns from pans or the racks in the oven. Tiny punctures from poking herself with a knife on more occasions than she was willing to admit. She had a piece of pencil lead permanently buried in her palm from a mechanical pencil stabbing her while she dug through her bag back in high school.
Her knees had permanent marks from the amount of times she’d tripped and tore through her tights. She gritted her teeth not just because she’d have to buy another new pair of stockings, but because she could never quite believe how she was so clumsy.
Those weren’t the scars that bothered him, especially seeing as she continued to be clumsy well into adulthood. It was the scars she found him tracing in the middle of the night. The scars he would fix his gaze on when she was able to wear summer clothing again. The scars that their son asked about on occasion, only to be met with two adults who couldn’t fathom a way to answer.
Just as Kyo assured her that his scars were nothing to worry about, she did the same for him. It didn’t stop him from pressing three of his fingers to the three parallel lines on her shoulder. It didn’t stop his face from twisting to a look of pain that broke her heart. It didn’t stop him from repeating over and over out loud how sorry he was and it certainly didn’t stop whatever awful things he was saying to himself in his head.
He had a different reaction whenever she caught him staring at the scar on her opposite side. Long and thin, but deep; the tiny suture marks still very much visible even years later. When she caught him staring at that, she could feel the tension radiating off of him. His jaw would set, teeth clamped together, mouth set in a scowl. No matter the weather, Tohru always made sure to wear long sleeves whenever Akito and Kyo were together with her in a room, though that had only happened a handful of times since they’d left home.
They were a patchwork quilt of defects, but her mother had, of course, been right all those years ago. It’s what you do after that matters.
And after all of the trauma, the injuries both physical and emotional, what they did together mattered more than ever. Because they created Hajime. And Hajime is the most perfect little boy she has ever known.
Hajime does not know anger. He does not know rejection or exclusion. He does not know judgement or loneliness. Hajime is surrounded every day by love and, in turn, returns it to his parents and those around him. He is kind, empathetic. He is precocious and articulate at only the age of two. He is everything she ever could have dreamed of.
True, that she and Kyo spent hours when he was an infant just staring at him as he slept. At his porcelain face, framed by vibrant red hair and his tiny, cherubic hands. Even now, Hajime’s parents find tranquility in simply watching him play, basking in the smile on his face and returning it back wholeheartedly. Hajime is the center of their world. He melts any residual anger and soothes the pain that lingers in the two of them.
They are inseparable, the three of them. Hajime joins both of his parents at work every day, following papa around the dojo between classes and playing at Tohru’s feet when the after-school crowd comes rushing in. He helps cook meals, as much as a toddler can, and grabs each of their hands as they go for walks along the shoreline in the evening.
As of late, he winds up in their bed at dawn every day. Sometimes being held by Tohru, other times by Kyo, but oftentimes placed squarely in the center, where both of his parents can cocoon him and squeeze another hour of sleep out of the morning before they can start their day together.
Today, Hajime rose from bed earlier than the sun, and Tohru heard through thick, sleepy ears the sound of Kyo plucking him up by the arm and hauling him up to their bed to share his pillow. She felt the blankets shift subtly as the two boys snuggled in close to succumb once more to silence and calm.
It’s a shrill cry that wakes her up. She bolts upright in bed next to Kyo, who is pulling Hajime up from the floor. Hajime screams in agony as Kyo wraps him up in the blanket, rising to his feet in a hurried panic. Tohru looks on in horror as Kyo holds a corner of the blanket over Hajime’s face, which is profusely bleeding, and she leaps to her feet.
It is a deep, albeit small cut under his eyebrow. Once Hajime’s panicked parents figure out that they alone will not be able to stop the bleeding, Tohru throws yesterday’s dress from the laundry basket over her pajamas. Kyo grabs his t-shirt from the floor and they hurry out to the car, where Tohru sits with Hajime to keep him calm and keep the now-soiled blanket pressed to his face.
Hajime leaves the hospital with three tiny stitches, a swollen eye, and a frown, all courtesy of the sharp corner of the bedside table he collided with when he rolled too far toward the edge.
At home, Hajime curls up on their bed with the two of them, safely in the middle, a parental shield on either side of him. He falls asleep for an early nap, no doubt a result of the morning’s trauma and the child-sized dose of medicine they gave him to calm the pain and swelling.
After an hour of just watching Hajime sleep, Tohru rises to heat up a late breakfast and returns, two steaming bowls of ramen on a tray in her hands, to find Kyo staring fixedly on the mark, tears in his eyes, as he grabs his son’s hand as gently as possible so as not to wake him. Tohru rests the tray on the offending nightstand and curls herself into Kyo’s lap.
“It’s gonna leave a scar,” Kyo whispers, brushing his lips against her hair. She can’t fathom a supportive response, so she just nods against his chest. “I don’t want him to have a scar.” She nods once more. She doesn’t want Hajime to have a scar, either. She doesn’t want him to ever hurt. She doesn’t want the reminder of doctors stitching him up while he wailed.
“Now’s the time when you’re supposed to give a positive Kyoko/Tohru spin on things,” Kyo suggests, wrapping his palm under her chin, tilting her head up to meet her eyes. There’s a ghost of a smile on his lips. He’s trying to cheer himself up, too. “Didn’t your mom have a whole speech about scars?”
Tohru returns his slight smile. “She did, but I think she was referring to being mugged with a knife or in a fight.” She giggles softly, picturing her mom’s speech if she were here right now. “But she once fainted when I had a bloody nose, so she would be no good in this situation.”
They fall silent and Tohru returns her head to his chest. As they sit there in contemplative silence, a tidal wave of guilt crashes down upon the two of them. She can feel it well up in her chest and she can hear Kyo’s breathing give him away.
Scars are a part of each of their lives, but not what either of them ever wanted for Hajime. Logically, she knows that kids get hurt all the time. She used to work in a school and now that they both work at the dojo, bandages and first aid kits are a part of their daily lives. But seeing her own child hurt, bleeding, and marked, even though there is nothing she could have done to prevent it makes her feel sick to her stomach.
Tohru breaks the silence and asks “Do you think a sparring helmet would fit his head?” Kyo snorts and she smiles, though she is partially serious. “Really!” She exclaims, a little too loudly and he hushes her. “At least until it heals...we don’t want it to get worse.” She whispers the last part.
Kyo hugs her tightly into his chest again. “I’ll try to find one his size.”
*   *   *
The same night, Tohru sits on their bed folding laundry. From the baby monitor, she hears Kyo read Hajime a bedtime story, her heart melting, as it always seems to, whenever he gets into it and switches up his voice for each of the characters. She hears the gentle thump of the hardback closing and being set up on the bookshelf next to Hajime’s bed. She continues to listen as Hajime and Kyo both yawn.
“Papa?” Hajime asks, his little voice floating through the monitor like music. Kyo prompts him to continue and Hajime says “Papa match?” Tohru rises to peek out of their bedroom door across the hall, curious as to what Hajime is saying.
“Match what?” Kyo asks, puzzlement lacing his tone.
Hajime sits up and reaches his hand out to point to Kyo’s left eyebrow and the scar that sits just below it. With his other hand, he touches his own stitched up brow, though his is on the right side. Tohru smiles as she looks at her husband and Hajime. Hajime points out the scar with no mal-intent and no judgement, just making an observation as he tends to do.
“Yeah, guess we do match, huh?” Kyo responds, smiling and kissing his son gently on his injury. Hajime returns the favor, missing Kyo’s scar entirely and landing a kiss on his temple instead. “You know what mama always says when we match…” Kyo says, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye as he settles Hajime back down under the blankets. “Aw, so cute.” Kyo croons in a high-pitched voice.
Hajime giggles, a musical sound, and recites a toddler version of her frequent catchphrase “I take a picture.”
“I love you, Hajime,” Kyo whispers, kissing the crown of his son’s head.
“Love you, too,” Hajime breathes, cuddling closer to his side. “So cute.”
Day 1) crushes; yuki
Flora and Fauna (1549 words) Fandom: Fruits Basket (Anime 2001), Fruits Basket Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Sohma Yuki, Hanajima Saki
Summary:
Yuki is in the garden with Tohru and Kyo when Tohru asks Yuki if he’s had an crushes. Yuki says no. Kyo doesn’t believe him but Tohru does.
“If you don’t like being here, then you are welcomed to leave,” Yuki says without a second thought as he gazes up from underneath a large, green leaf. Kyo, his hands caked in dirt, glares back.
“I just might!” He shouts.
“Aw, but we were having fun,” Tohru laments to herself rather quietly but both boys still heard her.
Yuki sighs and leaves any other remark hanging in the back of his mind. Surely they’d be useful one day, just not right here and not right now. Kyo goes back to kneeling on the ground and steaming to himself. It was Tohru’s request to come to his garden this afternoon to pick the ripe vegetables for dinner. She even asked permission for Kyo to join them, which he accepted because he gained new respect for the two of them since that awful, rainy night; and, maybe, Kyo wasn’t as bad as Yuki always thought he was.
Tohru uses a spade to carefully unearth a decently sized carrot. A large work moves around in the hole left behind. “Is this good enough?”
He smiles. The question should probably be one for her. After all, she did the cooking and would know how much was needed to make their food. He looks the carrot over for anything to make it undesirable and then nods. “It is.”
Tohru places it in the wooden basket they’re all sharing, filled with other vegetables, and looks over to Kyo. She shuffles around the plot to see if he needs help.
“How can you tell they’re good? They’re all dirty,” Kyo says with a scowl.
“Well, they’re roots. So, of course, they’re gonna be covered in dirt, silly.”
There’s a beat of silence. Wind blows through the trees and moves all the living plants around. They sway in motion as does his hair. It sounds like ocean waves. Yuki closes his eyes and takes a deep breath in and then out. This gentle moment is freedom. Freedom like he’s never known.
With Tohru’s laughter and Kyo’s fiery attitude, here in his safe place, he’s able to relax and live in the moment rather than in his head. Perhaps, one day, he could live like this in the outside world.
“Yuki, what about you?”
He comes back to reality; opening his eyes and looking across the small plot of land to see Tohru and Kyo staring back at him. “Hm?”
“Have you ever had a crush before?”
Yuki pauses. He stares at a spinach plant before him, its leaves free of bug feedings or such. His mice do a very good job at keeping away pests. He then looks back over to the pair.
“No, I don’t think I have.”
“Really?” Tohru asks softly, in slight disbelief but not in a way so she made a big deal about it. Kyo did not have such subtlety to his nature.
“You’ve attended school here for years. And I’ve seen those girls. Surely there’s someone you liked, even if you knew you couldn’t date them,” Kyo rebuttals. Tohru looks at him with a complicated expression. Yuki isn’t sure what part of the statement has offended her.
Yuki shakes his head. His face is rather simple as he knows rising to Kyo’s energy only results in a fight. “No, not really. I haven’t given much thought to it.”
“Because of the curse?”
A beat of silence fills the air as Yuki ponders about life without the curse. If he was free to pursue intimate relationships with the opposite sex, would he? It only takes a few seconds for him to make an answer he deems accurate of the hypothetical situation.
“No. I don’t think the curse has anything to do with it.”
Kyo sits in somewhat shock. He opens his mouth to ask another, most likely invasive, question but Tohru saves him from it.
“It’s okay that you don’t have a crush.” Her smile is like a breath of fresh air. There was a slight worry in his head she may call him abnormal. Like Kyo is probably thinking. It’s the same worry that prevented Yuki from telling his own parents to Shigure or even Hatori. But she manages to quell his fear. “That’s normal.”
Without really thinking about it, those were the exact words Yuki wanted to hear. He smiles wide enough to show teeth and doesn’t bother fighting his instincts to cover it. She looks as though she wants to get up and hug him but she stays beside Kyo.
“Wait, huh?”
Tohru’s gaze silently asks if he would wish to explain himself or have her go on. He briefly closes his eyes and shakes his head. Kyo would understand better coming from Tohru. She takes Kyo’s hand to get his attention, at which his face heats up, but he doesn’t run away.
“Think of it like this,” she starts. “You like girls, right?” Kyo nods and he looks at her as if she were oblivious. “And I like boys.”
“Where are you going with this?”
“Just listen to her, stupid cat,” Yuki says as he quietly listens to Tohru.
“That’s how people usually think relationships are supposed to be but it’s not always like that. Hana, for an example, doesn’t like anyone. And Yuki sounds a lot like she did when she came out.”
Kyo bites his tongue from speaking any further. The conversation is one he does not know how to interact in. But Yuki is deeply invested and Tohru is rather knowledgeable.
“What do you mean she doesn’t ‘like’ anyone?” Yuki asks.
“Well, she said she lacked sexual attraction; she called it asexual. You can ask her more about it if you’d like. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.”
Yuki nods along, fully intending on taking Tohru up on her offer.
————
The next day at school, Yuki finds Hanajima with ease. During cleaning hours, he approaches her to talk. She doesn’t seem to have any worry about skipping out on her class duties and takes him to the roof to avoid the prying ears of his fan club. Though, with Hana around, they’d stay very far away.
She checked the hallway a final time before turning around. “You wanted to talk, Sohma?”
“Yes, Miss Honda told me you are asexual. Do you mind telling me more?”
“Of course, what would you like to know?”
 “How did you know?”
“A few years ago. I did not find people ‘hot’ and I did not want to have sex. It was a simple search on internet forums to find the term. Our conversation is not making you uncomfortable, is it?”
“No.” Yuki shakes his head. “No, but, that sounds a little similar to myself.”
“Hm, maybe that is why your waves are different? Not quite like mine but not like everyone else’s.”
Yuki shuffles his feet as he watches he closely. Hanajima moves to sit down at a nearby bench. He follows her to keep a short distance between them but he does not sit next to her. “Well, tell me about yourself.”
Like Hanajima, he found his feelings rather simple to explain. He would have never thought it any different had Tohru never brought it up. So, the words were not difficult to form inside his head nor speak aloud. “I do find people attractive and I have thought about sex before but I cannot bring myself to form relationships. It is not that I fear I will be rejected or that I may hurt someone but I do not have the want to date.”
“Is that why you reject all those love confessions?” she mumbles to herself. “I think I have an idea.”
“Yes?”
“You may be aromantic; a person who lacks romantic attraction.”
Yuki sits there for a moment. Lack of romantic attraction definitely sounded like him. He’s rather smart and could likely figure a way to have a relationship with a girl without being intimate. And surely there are girls like Tohru in this world who would not run away in fear of his transformation. But could he ever imagine himself having a romantic relationship? No, he doesn’t think he can.
“Interesting,” he settles on saying.
“Romantic attraction and sexual attraction are two separate identities. I am sure no one has told you that before, though.”
“No, no they didn’t. Thank you, Miss Hanajima.”
“You are welcome. Do know, I cannot speak for your own feelings. I suggest when you have the time, to do some research on your own. You are not alone, Yuki.”
Hanajima stands and walks ahead of Yuki and to the stairway. Yuki hasn’t moved. He looks out at the scenery. For the second time in his life, he is different. Hanajima turns to notice him staring off into space. She calls out to him and he reacts by following her back to their classroom.
“You can come to me anytime you wish to discuss this or any topic, really. Your waves are not displeasing to be around and you hold good conversation.”
“I would not mind that.”
When they return, Hanajima is immediately greeted by Uo. She doesn’t make a joke about a boy and a girl being on the roof alone. Tohru gives him a knowing smile beckons him to join their fun of a new round of cards.
