If the OPM manga were to be a 'better-drawn' webcomic, what would have to change?
A thought experiment.
The OPM manga currently consists of 190 main chapters + 35 extra chapters, not including specials like 'Catch and Smash', the Christmas specials, or polls. So that's a total of 215 chapters telling us something about the story.
It's based on the webcomic, so what'd have to change?
Short answer: more than you think.
Tumblr media
First, you have to lose all the bonus chapters. (-35 chapters, 190 left)
Then you have to lose chapter 20, 'Rumors' even though it's foreshadowing for the Monster Association arc. (-1 chapter, 189 left)
Then you have to lose the bits of the Boros fight where he kicks Saitama to the Moon. (no change to chapter count)
You have to lose the entirety of Genos fighting G4 (just skip from the beginning to the end, where he brings the bits to Dr Kuseno). And you have to fix his damage. (no change to chapter count)
You have to lose Charanko taking on Garou, and pretty much everything from chapter 48 all the way to chapter 80. (-32 chapters, 157 left)
You have to redact out the martial artists in chapter 80, and also, it's awkward to explain why Genos has a new build but you can handwave it as being the rebuild after he asked Dr Kuseno to improve his parts. Yes, you're lying, but you've already started, might as well continue. Skip straight to Death Gatling and his posse surrounding the hut. Difficult to explain why he's brought friends, but again, handwave it as the heroes being on notice about Garou. (no change to chapter count)
You really have no choice but to keep the next couple of chapters in, although you could rip out most of chapter 83, so that Genos and Garou go from glaring at each other to Bang kicking the heck out of Garou. (no change to chapter count)
Sadly, Senior Centipede is already dead, so you have a bit of a problem. A clever way to spin this might be to edit things so it looks like the monsters ambushing the heroes gave the necessary distraction for Phoenixman to pounce, even though the heroes were making literal mincemeat of them. Then you can have Bang, Bomb, and Genos explain what happened back at Saitama's place to Fubuki, with no explanation of how they got back, just as in the webcomic. There! Now we've gotten rid of Elder Centipede! And Saitama coming out to rescue. And his giving that big a shit about Genos. Phew! You lack shame and integrity but we already knew that. (no change to chapter count)
Alright, the aftermath. The executive meeting meeting has to be kept. This Narinki guy is rather annoying, let's cut him out. I guess there's no harm in having the heroes gather. And Fubuki going to Saitama's place is okay as that's how you'll get around cutting out Elder Centipede, by having her hear what happened on the battlefield. Saitama can storm out as usual. Just remember to remove the mercenaries. (no change to chapter count)
Garou wakes up, but he doesn't meet the mercenaries. Goes to dinner, dashes and dines. You can keep Fubuki and Saitama dashing-and-dining on her. Tareo meeting Garou, okay too... his fighting the monsters, okay. It's all right until chapter 89. (no change to chapter count)
You have to lose Kuseno coming around. It's just lucky Saitama came across this extra, free meat (he won't admit it's from a monster). You have to lose Child Emperor and Sekingar talking. Indeed, lose everything about the support heroes. Makes chapters 93 and 94 difficult, but you'll manage. (no change to chapter count)
Come to that, lose Orochi and Garou fighting. Gyoro-Gyoro distracts Garou and throws him into a wall. You can keep Saitama going to look for the noise. (no change to chapter count but boy is chapter 92 strange).
Lose everything after Phoenixman being stabbed by Child Emperor and pick up again once Zombieman fights Vampire, then skip to Amai Mask fighting Do-S (but only the original version, also skip the disciples meeting her and edit out the mercenaries), and then skip to the disciples fighting Devil Long Hair. Pretend the mercenaries don't exist. Pretend that Machine God G5 doesn't exist. Sub in the originally-drawn fight with Evil Natural Water as well. (-4 chapters, 153 left)
Lose Child Emperor and Saitama coming to the surface, also lose Puri Puri and Nyan. Keep Pig God and Superalloy Darkshine. Keep Atomic's and Zombiemans' very bad encounters with the cadre. Already mentioned how to hack up the disciples meeting Evil Natural Water. (-2 chapters, 151 left).
Keep Tatsumaki fighting Gyoro-Gyoro, but lose everything with Saitama and Orochi. Lose Do-S reviving with monster blood and her rematch with Fubuki. Keep Amai Mask meeting Fuhrer Ugly. (-3 chapters, 148 left)
Keep Puri Puri meeting Garou, and Saitama meeting Flashy Flash. Lose EVERYTHING on the surface team, including Drive Knight vs. Nyan and Genos swooping in to take care of G5. Go straight to Puri Puri being thrashed by Garou and Superalloy Darkshine taking over. (-5 chapters, 143 left)
Keep Child Emperor meeting the disciples and Evil Natural Water. Edit out the mercenaries. Skip the scene of Genos reviewing the cadres' information as he runs in. Keep the New Fubuki Group stuff (yeah, we know it's a plot hole how they're facing Rover, but deal!). Remove all the Manako hijinks. None of this underground mine stuff. Cut straight to Pyskos fortifying herself to face Tatsumaki and Garou and Darkshine fighting (no change to chapter count)
Keep Tatsumaki and Psykos fighting. Ah, now you have a problem... Orochi. Hmmm, on second thoughts, CUT straight to Tatsumaki raising the base as Garou and Darkshine continue fighting. You'll be explaining Psykos's transformation as her new form, induced by the combination of the drug she drunk and the monster bodies we saw her have in the lab. (-2 chapters, 141 left)
Cut chapter 131, it's just complicated to explain why all these guys are in hospital. Alas, you're really stuck with 132 through 134, unless you want to cut the story to nonsense. You can skip 135, won't do to give away Amai Mask's 'secret'. Yes, Genos's power and Drive Knight's return really have come from nowhere but it can't be helped (-2 chapters, 139 left)
Trim away Blast telling Tatsumaki to protect her sister. You have to keep the pesky cyborgs dogging Psykos, unfortunately, in the name of any semblance of sense. You also have to keep Saitama and Flashy, but you could edit every panel of Manako possible. Remove the next chapter. Don't need this God stuff or Blast appearing too early. Remove the chapter after that. Put Tatsumaki lifting and throwing the base with the next one. The cadre have to come back, but Suiko and Suiryu can disappear. (-2 chapters, 137 left)
Remove 142 completely (that's where Drive Knight drops Genos). Cut the next chapter down harshly, either skip the bits with the mercenaries being tormented or call them civilians who didn't get away in time. Unfortunately, the rest of the heroes rallying and giving Black Sperm a tough time until Vomited Fuhrer Ugly appears has to stay. You can cut the Sword Master stuff as you never introduced them! Re-explain Atomic getting the Sun Blade as a flashback. (-1 chapter but a lot of hacking, 136 left)
You'll have to keep everything that happens afterwards until Saitama, Flashy Flash, and Manako appear on the surface without explanation Cut way back on Saitama running to Genos. Let's say he loses interest as soon as he realises that Genos is okay. Keep the three way fight between Flashy Flash, Garou, and Platinum Sperm, but remove everything to do with Evil Natural Ocean, the aircraft destroyer, and Sage Centipede. Phew, now Metal Bat can be disappeared too. Skip the next 4 chapters, in other words. (-4 chapters, 132 left)
Saitama vs Garou right off the bat. How brave are you feeling? If you're feeling very brave, remove all the planet bulging, volcano-destroying crap, remove all the interplanetary stuff, and have Saitama beat Garou somewhere far away from the heroes. Edit out Tareo's death, the deaths of the heroes and Genos's murder. Edit out the time travel. Edit out the explanations. Give Saitama his clothes back. Have him punch out Garou in one mighty hit and then pretend it's nothing to do with him. (-6 chapters if you're brave, 126 chapters left)
Goes without saying that chapter 170 has to go. (-1 chapter, 125 left).
Considering that I've only considered the first 170 chapters, you've removed 64 of them wholesale and butchered a lot of the rest. Nice one!
I'll stop here.
It's readable. There's holes you could drive a truck through. And those holes are going to be real problems later on in the story, but hey, at least it's sorta faithful to the webcomic, eh?
Isn't that what really matters?

I'd love to know what you see as the similarities and differences between 1. Sam and Melinda and 2. Jay and Jim. I think a lot of the characters' differences stem from the genres they're in, like of course Jay is more goofy than Jim because Jim is in the more serious show. Jim is more of a "guy's guy" but I'd live for him having a secretly nerdy side that wants to play games with Jay and Pete :) I love the way Jim and Jay both accept and support their wives completely yet still express their own differing views. As for Sam and Melinda...obviously they're both caring and brave and determined, but (to me) Sam is more extroverted and chipper while Melinda is more introverted, sensitive and cerebral. Sam is more achievement oriented and eager to please and impress while Melinda is used to people viewing her as a weirdo from the time she was a kid so more or less ignores other people's views of her lol. And Sam is definitely more oriented towards the future, a 'can do' type who's into lists, plans, goals, milestones etc, while Melinda's antique shop, sentimental attachment to old items and need to help ghosts resolve prior conflicts shoe her as someone who's strongly attached to the past. This is why Jim is the perfect partner for her --Jim is very attuned to his surroundings and lives in the present, so he pulls Melinda out of her head and helps her appreciate the present moment too! I plan to cover all this in the fic I'll probably end up too lazy to write :) Anyway, I love all four of these characters and would love to hear your thoughts on them!
Melinda: I definitely agree with you, especially re the extraversion introversion thing. A big difference though is that we mostly see Mel deal with ghosts who are way angrier and at least creepier in appearance first off compared to Sam. Like, since Mel's ghosts by and large have to have their whole stories solved in an episode (with a few exceptions such as Kate Payne), she doesn't have time to be as easy and chummy with her ghosts the way Sam is (because we know that being sucked off is a goal on CBS Ghosts but it's not as easy to figure out how to make that happen as it seems to be on Ghost Whisperer.)
One thing I wonder is that IF we saw Sam have to deal with ghosts who were naturally harsher and not as immediately friendly (like send her to deal with the dealmart after dark peeps or the ghosts from the asylum for the criminally insane or whatever the heck was on the same ground as that one coffee shop), WOULD Sam become more guarded and serious like Mel? Would she see helping ghosts more as a job or transaction instead of her thinking now, which is "here are these ghosts who are my friends, or at least not people who are going to treat me harshly. Let's work together to get them where they need to go!"
Also I think Sam has it a wee bit easier than Mel when it comes to being able to tell others about what she can do. Sure, Bela had the "Delia" reaction to finding out Sam could see ghosts initially (i.e., you're crazy, sick, need help, etc.) But because Alberta, Isaac, etc. have powers that can engage the senses of livings, it didn't take long to convince Bela that Sam and Jay were telling the truth and there wasn't any time where you looked at Sam and went "Oh, you poor baby, let me wrap you up in a blanket". (Like I sometimes feel when Mel has to reveal her abilities to ghosts' family members so they can do what they need to do.)
Jay: Totally agree with your assessment of Jay as well, especially him being allowed to be goofier than Jim, but I love that both guys support their wives' ghost seeing endeavors so wholeheartedly and love them so much. (And I know that if there was ever a time Sam was in genuine harm from the ghosts, Jay would just save her like immediately, like when that one ghost made Mel's hair get stuck in the garbage disposal and she was so scared she was crying. I can't remember what episode it's in at the moment though.)
I loved the episode of GW where that super model that Jim had known before reached out to him to help her. It was so interesting to see and I think it would be nice if Jay got to have the same opportunity in an episode.
(I think that if GW had been structured in a way to allow Jim to interact with the ghosts the way Jay does, he totally would have been cool with it. And I think he does have like a gamer side and would be up for playing games with Jay and Pete totally.)
I love them all too...so much.

Alright as someone who studies medicine I'd like to tell you that a cadaver is used to dissect and learn about the human anatomy. As in the structure of the body, the organisation of every organ in the body and what the features of those organs are.
The human anatomy remains same no matter what the weight of the individual who donated their body is.
The purpose of cadavers for first year medical students is just that. To tear every body part out and study what the exact structure and organisation is underneath the skin. It won't change if the person is fat or thin. The only difference however is that a fat person will have a lot of extra fat tissue that would need to be removed and it will also be very oily on dissecting which does indeed hinder the process of studying the structures underneath.
As someone who's seen both thin and fat dissected bodies, i apologise to those whom it offends but it is definitely harder to dissect a body with a very high fat percentage. It can be extremely hard to trace subcutaneous blood vessels and nerves if there is too much fatty tissue, and in the process of removing the fat there's a high chance you may damage the structures lying below. Not to mention, that just removing the fat will take way too long. Even in thin individuals removing the fat can be a tedious and unfortunately smelly process. It may get worse when there's more fatty tissue.
The bodies are stored everyday under formalin and then brought out the next day for the students to dissect and once the class is over it is stored under formalin in lower temperatures again. It may also be tough for the staff working in dissection halls as they need to transport these bodies in and out everyday.
And yes, doctors do have to treat both fat and thin individuals but they DO NOT learn how to treat individuals in their anatomy class they only learn to first identify the whole composition and organisation of the body because that is the initial step. Dissection has nothing to do with learning how to diagnose a patient.
Later, they're exposed to the hospital environment where they see all kinds of patients, no matter what the weight or height or socio economic background.
And after coming to medschool I've realised that doctors can be really blunt in what they say and it may appear rude to someone else but usually they're just speaking about something that's medically important. If a doctor tells you to lose weight it's not because they're fat shaming you it is because you're probably prone to coronary artery disease or fatty liver and they want to prevent the worse case scenario rather than wait for it to happen and then treat it.
The reality of medical school is that once you're exposed to all sorts of sights you just somehow become insensitive to them. And other people may not realise that and start regarding medical professionals as rude, ignorant or mannerless.
The med school that i belong to does accept all sorts of bodies and I've definitely seen extremely obese bodies as well. But from a student's stand point i do agree that dissecting a body with a lesser fat percentage would make the process as well as experience easier.
Tumblr media
Hey did you know that you can’t escape fatphobia even after death? The article talks about how these donated bodies are used for first year anatomy students to study the body, and how the 'perfect' body for that should be 170-180 pounds.

Anyways, speaking of bunny c!Dream, welcome to the Apology Cake AU, the result of c!Sam and c!Dream brainrot in the dreblr discord. In which c!Sam and c!Dream are forced to bond, and they're both terrible at it!
Important notes: c!Dream is a secret bunny hybrid hiding using magic in his mask. The mask held up during prison, so nobody found out. He appears completely human. c!Sam is a creeper urmahlullu (lion centaur), very obvious hybrid (he has toe beans). This AU takes place post-prison.
Hybrid hunters looking for fighters end up on the SMP, they got in by exploiting a glitch to access what should be a private portal. The hunters take notes about the area, but are discovered by c!Sam and c!Dream at different points. Both of them are surprised by the hunters and end up caught.
The hunters bring both of them when they leave the SMP to report back. c!Sam is brought because he's an ideal fighter, c!Dream (who the hunters believe to be human) is brought to prevent him from warning anyone else.
The two of them end up locked up together. Both of them are injured, but c!Sam is a lot worse off. Since c!Sam is a creeper hybrid, he was blinded using potions to keep him docile and more heavily injured when being captured/restrained(creepers are visual hunters).
Dream wakes up first and realizes what happened almost instantly, he also realizes that these hunters are fucking dumb because they didn't catch on that Dream's a hybrid. That means his own escape is going to be pretty simple.
Then Dream realizes that Sam is in the cell with him and fuck this just got more complicated.
Sure, getting himself out would be no problem, but Sam is clearly injured and the polar opposite of stealth. Getting him out too is going to be a nightmare.
There's a moment, while Sam is unconscious, that Dream considers leaving him behind. Not for forever. Just... Dream could get out. Go back to the SMP and alert the others. Let them come play the heroes. It'd be easier, a lot less risky, and it's probably the smart play...
But Dream also knows the moment he vanishes the hunters will assume their cover is blown and most likely move Sam. The odds of recovering him are slim if Dream leaves him here.
And....
And despite everything, Dream still believes in his big happy family. He still sees Sam as a part of that. At the end. He's given up so much for his plan, what's a little bit more risk? What's a little bit more danger?
So Dream stays and waits for Sam to rouse. There's the initial panic, learning that Sam is now blind, and the whole fuss of "shut up, stop throwing a fit, we're getting out of here".
Eventually, Sam settles down enough to accept that Dream is his best shot at getting out of here. He's not sure why Dream isn't leaving him for dead, but he'll take it. Anything's better than getting left with the hunters.
Dream even has a plan. Dream is going to break out first, get supplies and check the path out, then come back to get Sam. Easy! Admittedly, Sam is still unclear on how Dream, a human, is going to get out of his chains, but Dream insists he knows a way. Sam is able to move around a bit and practice walking. He can still do that, even if his legs hurt.
When nightfall hits, Dream does... something. Something that lets his chains clatter to the ground without breaking. There wasn't the click of a lock, no shattering noise. Just clinks and a soft clatter as the chains slipped to the floor. It's unnerving.
As Sam quickly discovers, it's a lot less unnerving than being left on his own, blind and mostly helpless. Dream assures him he'll be fast as he picks open the cell door, and it's not like Sam could stop him either way, but still...
The silence is potent and leaves so much room for doubt. Sam finds his chest seizing with the panic of being left behind. He tries everything to control his breathing, but trapped in darkness with no distractions, his thoughts are allowed to run wild.
Surely, Dream has abandoned him. He only lied and said he'd come back so Sam wouldn't scream and give him away. There's no way that Dream's actually coming back for him of all people. Particularly not when Sam would be such a dead weight in their escape. He's going to be here forev-
"Sam- come on, the hell is-"
Oh. Dream was already back.
Sam tunes back in to reality to realize that Dream is shaking him. He can feel the man's hands on him, and quickly tries to regain his composure.
"Sorry. I- Sorry."
His voice is a little too loud, and he can feel Dream flinch, hear the swish as the man searches for anyone having been alerted.
Silence. Nobody heard.
When Dream speaks, his voice is a whisper.
"I've got what I could, food, a weapon, and stuff. There's a path out. But we need to go now. And I couldn't find the keys."
Oh. So Dream is leaving him. Sam's chest seizes again, but this time it's easier to understand. At least Dream tried. At least he came back to tell him. Sam can appreciate that Dream gave him that much.
"This isn't ideal, but I think it'll work. You're going to need to put it on. It might- it might hurt? Just- Keep quiet, and don't take it off until I get the chains off you. Okay?"
Huh. What? Sam was utterly lost as to what Dream could possibly have that would let him get out of these chains until-
A smooth, convex, disk was pressed into his hands. Cool to the touch, unbroken, and familiar. Sam's brain stalled out.
In the prison- Dream had sworn, time and time again, that his mask didn't come off. He said he got cursed as a kid. Sam had believed him, after all, nothing he'd done to remove the mask had worked.
Yet here it was in his hands, and- And Sam realized he could feel Dream's breath. The other was leaning in over him, and Sam could feel little puffs of air as Dream moved green limbs, likely so the chain's would fall quietly.
"Sam, come on, we gotta move."
Right. There wasn't- There wasn't time for this. Sam pushed this revelation to the back of his mind, and put blind faith in Dream.
Lifting the mask up to his face, Sam put it on.
It took all Sam's strength not to scream.
Really, it didn't hurt. Not much. But it felt wrong. Sam felt his body shrink, limbs vanish and morph, his spine felt wrong. Everything felt wrong. It wasn't him.
Somewhere, in the distance, he could hear the soft clatter of chains and Dream was moving his arms to slide now loose cuffs off of him. It was thirty seconds at most, but if Sam had had the strength to lift his- arm? Was that his arm? It didn't feel like his arm. His arm was bigger, and different, and capable of ripping this horrid thing off of him.
In the time it took to process those thoughts, Dream had pushed the chains off his arms and guided Sam's hands back up to the mask. The moment he could, Sam yanked it off, almost sending the cursed thing flying across the room.
Thankfully, Dream managed to snag it instead. Preventing the sound that would surely give them away.
"Yeah, I know, s'not fun. Come on, we gotta go. Faster we get out, the better our chances will be."
Right. They needed to leave. Sam stumbled forward, hoping that his body would figure out how to navigate in the pitch black.
It did not.
Dream's hand was the only thing that stopped him from slamming headfirst into the wall. As it was, he still brushed it. This- This was going to be harder than he thought.
Dream clearly thought so too. Sam could hear him tapping his foot in- impatience? Anxiety? Fear surged again. Sam needed to prove he could do this, he could get out. Otherwise Dream would-
"Here. Just- Here."
Before Sam could spiral again, Dream reached over to grab Sam's hand in his own. Taking a moment to ensure he had a firm grip before twisting to lead the way. Oh. This- Well, it'd have to work.
"If I need you to stop, I'll tap your wrist like this," Dream demonstrated with a sharp tap. "Two taps means I need to let go to do something, stay where you are. Three taps means get ready to run. Got it?"
Sam nodded, having trouble forming any words.
Their escape was surprisingly uneventful. Sam got the hang of walking by the time they were down the hall. At least, he figured out how to move his feet. He still stumbled every time the ground changed under him, but for once his sensitive pawpads came in handy.
Dream was obviously not pleased by the pace, Sam could hear it in how he huffed softly, how he kept up that tapping of his feet whenever he had to slow his steps for Sam again. Still, the other man never complained. He kept forging forward until finally, Sam could feel grass under his feet.
"Okay, up here. I left the bodies and the armor-"
No sooner had Dream said that than the smell of blood hit Sam's nose. Ah. That- That would explain why their exit was so clean. He really shouldn't be surprised by how deadly Dream could be.
Dream took a bit of time to fit the diamond chestplate he'd managed to steal onto Sam's body, and improvise some leg armor that was a mix of diamond and iron because "you're already slow as hell, if we get into a chase and you get shot, you're dead."
It hurt to hear, but Dream was right. The leg coverings might be uncomfortable, but they'd keep the obvious targets safe.
While Dream worked to strap the armor onto his legs, he gave Sam a backpack filled with supplies so he could feel around and get a sense for where things were (bandages near the top, then food and two knives. Some extra clothing. Alcohol and water at the bottom.)
Apparently, Dream also had a pack, though smaller.
"I only found one healing pot and no regen."
Sam almost asked for it, the cuts and bruises on his body ached and maybe-
"It won't fix your sight. There's nothing physical going on there. That's going to either take time or something specialty. We need to save it for something life threatening."
Right. That, that made sense.
Sam still found himself upset as they finished up their preparations and kept moving. They still had a long trip ahead of them to get home, or at least close enough that they could warn the others.
They were out of the camp now, in the woods, so Sam thought he'd be fine. Sure, being blind made things harder, but he could feel out his steps now. Dream had even thought to find him a decent stick that he could use to check the area ahead of him.
How hard could it be to navigate a forest blind?
After the third time Sam ran headfirst into a tree he forgot to check for, Dream was fed up.
"Alright, that's it, come here."
Before Sam could protest, Dream was grabbing his hand again. Sam was... Well, he wasn't exactly happy about this, but when he tried to speak up-
"We need to move faster, we don't have time for you to learn how to walk again."
Sam didn't like it but-
Well, Dream had a point.
If nothing else, Dream was a decent guide. He kept pace with Sam's larger legs without trouble, and was conscious of their difference in size. Following him was much easier than trying to navigate the unfamiliar landscape.
So much easier, that Sam actually had time to think. About everything that had happened over the course of the night.
All the sudden, the knowledge he'd shoved to the back of his mind came back in full world-shattering force.
Dream's mask was removable. It was a hybrid suppressor. A powerful one.
Sam stopped dead in his tracks.
"You- You?! You're a- Since when- What?!"
"Sam-" Before Dream could get any further, there was flurry of sudden noises well behind them. Alarm bells ringing and faint voices shouting. Fuck.
"Come on, we don't have time for this."
Dream pulled, yanking Sam forward, pace picking up to an uncomfortable speed.
Obviously, it wasn't the time. But Sam couldn't help but notice Dream's gait was distinctly different now. Unusual. Inhuman.
Huh.

Ed, Edd n Eddy Series Bible (1996) -Analysis-
You can all finally read/download Ed, Edd n Eddy's official Series Bible right here! Thanks again to Chuckletons for sharing this with me and to Joey/Kongiscool0518 for sharing it in the first place, the Holy Grail of lost Ed, Edd n Eddy trivia!
One of the first posts I made for this blog was the Series Bible page. It was a composite of every source we had ever seen reference the series bible so far-- storyboarders in interviews, CN's old character guides, and the biggest source, an old CN UK posting about the show. Well, I figure now that we have the official source, I better update the old page (so everyone knows it's out of date), and make this new Series Bible post using the official source! Not much new information, but I was intrigued to finally learn the true phrasings of some things we had only heard paraphrased, as well as at least one detail from the movie that I couldn't believe came up this early in conception...
Unfortunately, Tumblr has apparently updated its post system to only let me add 10 images? Gonna try and only use images for what I need since you can read the actual document above, I guess I'll transcribe it too for easier reference and so we don't ever lose some archive of this.
Quickly, let's review what a series bible is:
A series bible is how creators pitch shows to networks. They can be called “pitch bibles” as well. Bibles do not usually get posted publicly, because they are initially under a strict Non-Disclosure Agreement by the network; also the creator may simply not wish to share it because it reflects the earliest stages of development.
The pitch materials typically include early concepts for characters, locations and episodes. Sometimes it exposes secrets, in this case, Ed and Eddy’s home lives, and sometimes the stuff in it is completely abandoned because it’s so early in production, in this case, casual references to school and adults.
Alright, everybody, it's time to gather 'round and read the Ed, Edd n Eddy Bible!
THE YEAR IS 1996.
YOUR NAME IS LINDA SIMENSKY. YOU WORK AT CARTOON NETWORK. A FRIEND OF YOURS, DANNY ANTONUCCI, IS WRAPPING UP A SHOW ON MTV. YOU GET THIS FAX.
Tumblr media
Linda Simensky immediately fell in love with this concept because as a child, she was best friends with 2 other Lindas for seemingly no reason other than the shared name.
I love how Danny decided last second to pencil in the correct names over each Ed, since they're arranged out of title-order.
"They're friends because they have the same name."
-the Logline for the series.
Fun fact: one storyboard artist for the movie observed that the movie is essentially all about challenging the series' original notion that the Eds are friends ONLY because of their name.
"A Danny Antonucci Cartuna"
-the label Danny used to use under announcements of new productions.
PAGE 1:
Ed, Edd n Eddy
They're best friends because they have the same name.
A gag laden, beat generated CARTOON bumper car ride of 3 misfit youths on a cul-de-sac in the suburbs of America.
Through summer vacation, part-time jobs, or just hang'n out at the corner mail box, they want to belong....but CAN'T.
From home chores, helping neighbors or eating jaw breakers, they want to fit in...but CAN'T.
Ed is into "B" monster movies, model kits and is quick to break out into rashes.
Lots of luck...
Edd is into chemistry, biology and prone to crushes.
Later...
Eddy is into pranks, is stylish and flaunts himself to the world.
Ya Right...
Ed, Edd n Eddy is a show about confusion and contradiction, that awkward part of youth, pimples, big feet, oily hair and... girls???.
Puberty is unforgiving.
I was fascinated by the lack of art on this page, it makes the pitch feel very focused. AKA logo in the corner, the title logo again up top, then the logline appears again below.
I really love the breakdown of Danny's vision of the show. "Gag-laden, beat-generated, CARTOON bumper ride." Very accurate, and I think "beat-generated" is the phrase that interests me the most. I typically think of "animation beats" as sort of a give-in-- technically all things fit a rhythm, so all stories are essentially just a montage of beats. But this does make me realize how important the strength of the beats and their rhythm are to the pacing of a cartoon and making you feel like "that was a good one." I feel like the "seasonal rot" viewers feel over the course of a show, and the way that perception differs from person to person, depends on the type of beats you want. Even though I am very into the experimental beats of a show in its later seasons, I can definitely see how season 1's beats are more typically appealing to a wide-audience, and how important a focus on that is to the longevity of a show.
I found it really interesting how the scams are initially conceived of here as "summer jobs." It adds to the sense that adults were originally meant to be present. Honestly a little surprised nobody with access to this bible had ever thought to mention that-- scams are not referenced ANYWHERE. Their image in the Series Bible is that they have summer jobs and help neighbors, which is certainly a much cleaner reputation than the Eds ended up with in the show. Makes me realize though, were some of the early scams, like Ed's Hive Bee Gone and their newspaper routes, supposed to be leaning into this early idea of them with almost legit jobs for unseen adults?
I was very amused by the repeated phrase that the Eds simply CAN'T fit in.
Loved to finally see the official phrasing for the confirmation that Peach Creek is in America. Not much different than I was led to believe, but still nice to have the true quote.
Also love Eddy being described as "stylish and flaunting himself to the world." The bold-print reactions to each micro-description is a cute idea too, I truly wonder who we were meant to picture saying those things in reaction. Each Ed? Kevin?
The "corner mail box" is an oddly specific phrase-- the Eds do hang around mailboxes throughout the series, especially seasons 1-3, and I believe the canon map does have a corner mailbox, but the idea that the Eds hang out at one specific mailbox went the way of Bro's supposed secret treehouses.
PAGE 2:
Ed, Edd n Eddy
Show Description
Gag laden. True cartoon style, inventive, non parody, fast paced, stretch and squash
Beat driven. (even when characters stop they hold with a bounce cycle. Adults never bounce. Music can play important part, not just fill.) But not a musical.
Cartoon surrealism. (viewers see the show as Ed, Edd n Eddy would, less important things tend to blend into the background, while objects of Ed, Edd n Eddy's desires are focused. Premise driven.)
The school year's over, (yeah!!!!) and the long HOT summer vacation begins (gulp). What to do?
Stuck on a cul-de-sac in the suburbs of America is the last place you want to spend summer break, especially when you find life confusing and contradicting.
Ed, Edd n Eddy is about friendship, and serves to remind us that they're no "good ole days," just smelly runners.
You can tackle anything, when your with your pals.
Their days are spent, for knowledge, acceptance and some cash for jaw breakers. Armed with pimples, big feet and oily hair the three amigos trek into the unknown.
Ed, Edd n Eddy are dying to be grown-ups, but they're kids, and attack adulthood as only kids would. Simple situations turn into a manic rollercoaster ride. (Don't forget your barf bag).
They just want to belong, and they're willing to pull off any insane stunt to prove it. First they need to figure out what it is they want to belong to.
Found it interesting that on this page, the show's logo is replaced with the title written in a jumbled font. Seems like the font from the show's end credits.
Hehe, the continued reactions to the descriptions. Allow me to be Double D for a moment and point out the increased use of parentheticals on this page, as well as one wrong "your".
I love Danny's insight that season 1 is framed by the context of how hyped everyone still is just to be out of school, but also the sense of pressure to make use of their break.
I really appreciate Danny getting further into the details of his summary of the show's style on the previous page. It only makes sense that he had this much of a vision that early.
A second confirmation of the cul-de-sac being in America! I'm also really into the repeated focus on the Eds finding the world "contradicting." I always loved how EEnE's inexplicable cartoon antics supported that sense that the Eds are highly aware of contradictions in both societal things and the actual characters.
Tumblr media
WOW, so I'm fascinated by this dual reveal. Before the wiggling outlines, which Danny usually calls a "boiling line" and describes as a tribute to wiggling inking in early animation, the series bible instead refers to him wanting the characters to do the iconic Fleischer "bounce," which is a much more commonly recognized rubberhose animation technique. Very interesting that Danny decided not to stick to that. Did it feel too out of place? Or was the overseas team not willing to animate a weight-shifting for every single held pose? Haha, guess I can see why boiling was an easier compromise. I wonder if he had any other ideas for how to make it more of a 1930s cartoon.
The other reveal to me here is that the movie's choice, that adults don't always wiggle in the show, was an idea from the very beginning! I guess I can better understand now why it's just too difficult to communicate a stylistic choice like that overseas-- no point making Bro not wiggle, that'd just create confusion.
Also, really disappointed that my wish for a musical is officially squashed in the series bible itself. That's a tragedy. The show's over, ya couldn't let me dream, Danny!? Conversely, I love Danny's forethought to say "non parody," I definitely noticed and appreciated EEnE's avoidance of derivative parody humor.
Tumblr media
My spouse had to point out to me that Danny probably means sneakers here, lol. Canadianisms!
The comments about the Eds wanting to grow up but needing to figure out what they want to belong to are so great and relate to the movie so well. I've heard those comments before, but the correct phrasing was cool to see.
PAGE 3:
Ed, Edd n Eddy (image of Ed in right corner)
Character Description
Ed
Attention deficiency syndrome.
He has trouble...
He can't....um...
OK, he draws all day in class.
When Eddy gets a bright idea...Ed's in.
Ed is easily talked into doing Eddy's "hard work". He has great physical strength.
Ed's happiest with his Model kits and B-monster movies. He draws his knowledge from his movies.
Ed smells. Flies are attracted to him.
Ed has sayings for all situations
ED: "you can change your shirt, and Bingo was his name..."
Ed's perpetually a slave to his younger sister's whims and whines.
Ed may have to baby-sit his sister, or let her watch whatever she wants on TV, or let her dress him up in mom's clothes.
Ed breaks out in Rashes. He's allergic to practically everything, especially Guinea Pigs.
Ed's Mom xerox's his sketches and doodles for her therapist.
Ed's Dad hopes to pass on to his son, his knowledge on "pre-owned" auto sales.
Very cute bit wasting the space at the top of the page. Danny seems very invested in Ed's personality already. The old sources we used to have definitely tried to condense these down to simpler blurbs.
Weird how Danny wants to essentially diagnose Ed with ADHD here (phrasing it very poorly, but it was the 90s and... Canada?). I don't know enough on the subject to debate it, but I still gotta point out Ed's canonical cracked skull!
Interested in the comment about Ed being most allergic to Guinea Pigs. I don't think that animal was ever even mentioned in the show. Eddy mentioned an old gerbil once....
Neat to finally have the real phrasing of the official word on Ed's parents! I saw someone comment earlier that this seems to be hinting Ed's Dad is selling stolen cars. I've never thought to question the legality of his apparent second-hand-car dealership (I imagined he works with Eddy's dad, who has received a legitimate award for his salesmanship), but those quotation marks are certainly making Mr. Ed's practices questionable! Best case scenario, Danny meant that more like italics or something, but maybe Ed's dad IS up to no good...
PAGES 4 & 5 (Ed's turn sheet and expression sheet)
PAGE 6:
Ed, Edd n Eddy (image of Edd in right corner)
Character Description
Edd
is really smart.
is really quiet.
Edd is unnaturally-- polite.
Edd hasn't been allowed to take gym ever since the Dodge ball incident. He's been excused to free study time in the library.
Edd doesn't like it when people touch his things.
EDD: "You may enter in my room, but don't touch my Lego robot. Thank you."
Edd's learning to play Peddle steel guitar. (his Mom makes him)
Edd's prone to "crushes". Girls in School, in his neighborhood, TV, anatomy books. He mails "true loves" his socks.
Edd is always ready for action, even though he can calculate the implications.
Edd constantly mumbles.
No one ever sees Edd's parents. They both work nights. They communicate to their son solely through Post-it notes. Edd's not allowed to touch anything in the house while they're gone. Anything.
Interesting how Danny slightly differentiates the barely-used space at the top here from Ed's description, to characterize Edd as more quiet and mumbly, adding an awkward "--" mid-sentence, perhaps to create the impression that Edd halts to choose words carefully.
Everything on this page feels familiar, from the character guides and other old sources. The most interesting thing to me here is that Edd's Mom forcing him to practice Pedal Steel Guitar is established this early, don't think I knew that, but I had noticed that it existed in his room from ep 1.
I love how the explanation in the beginning for why Edd goes along with their dumb schemes even though he's smart is basically just "he's always ready for action." ?!? I guess in a way???
That weirdly phrased Edd quote amuses me because it references Lego, just like the original concept background for his room before somebody nixed the copyright-namedrop.
Tumblr media
Edd's prone to crushes thing has been reaffirmed over and over in character bios even though it really doesn't come up outside of the cupid magic in HPH and the pilot-episode heart eyes at Sarah that are barely canon. Still, I've always loved the truly disturbing statement that he mails "his true loves his socks" and how that managed to make it into canon with a comic book example, a cel animation example and a digital era example.
Tumblr media
PAGES 7 & 8 (Edd's turn sheet and expression sheet)
PAGE 9:
Ed, Edd n Eddy (image of Eddy in right corner)
Character Description
Eddy
Exhibitionist.
Megalomaniac. (quote from his report card)
Eddy is the unofficial leader of the trio.
He's always got a plan, a stunt or a weird noise.
Eddy's the "class clown". He loves showing off. He loves being the centre of attention-- no matter how stupid the reason is.
Eddy is the only kid in his grade to have been expelled for aw hole week from school. It was his turn to set up the video for science class. He switched "Our Friend Yeast", for a video he "borrowed" from his parent's room.
Before Eddy's brother went....away, he enlightened Eddy with the "legends" of the neighbourhood. Eddy knows where all the abandoned tree houses are, which sewer pipers are safe to spelunk, and the secret recipe for the "El Mongo Stink Bomb" (it's been in the family for years).
He is the one who is most able to pretend that he knows it all... and doesn't care what anyone else thinks about him.
His genes are working the fastest.
Eddy's Dad is constantly concerned that Eddy may grow up to be a ...figure skater.
Eddy's Mom never believes his little darling was involved in such a heinous act.
Funny choice that Eddy's wasted-top-space is just two one-word descriptions, and allegedly lazily swiped from his negative report card.
Wow, we knew the report card quote and the "Our Friend Yeast" story from the UK show guide, but now we also know Ed's page says that Ed draws in class, and now I realize that Ed and Eddy have series bible school blurbs to match Edd's classic dodgeball incident blurb. Anyway, it's great that Eddy's showed his entire school some sort of sex video his parents have.
Very interested that the phrasing for the Bro/El Mongo Stink Bomb blurb even seems to suggest it's a family recipe. Eddy's Dad did have prankster stuff in his closet in JJJ... did Bro learn his prankster ways from Dad?? The neighborhood's secret tree houses have come up in other descriptions (at best, I'd say this could be related to that creepy shack the Eds found in the woods), but I think it's new info that Eddy personally learned the sewer routes from Bro. Interesting...
Thankfully, I had already heard about the Bible's awkward reference to Eddy being the most pubescent as "his genes are working the fastest," lmao.
Once again the Double D in me comes out to point out that the description of Eddy's Mom seems to switch to the Dad's pronouns.
PAGES 10 & 11 (Eddy's turn sheet and expression sheet)
PAGES 12-14 (Sarah, Jimmy, Rolf, Jonny, Nazz, and Kevin lineup of all 6, then 2 zoomed in lineups of the first 3 kids and last 3 kids)
(Funfact: the kids' designs were allegedly freelanced to an outside studio, hence why their refined later-season designs are so different from these lizardy starting places, lmao)
PAGE 15: (images of Sarah and Jimmy next to their blurbs)
SARAH
Ed's baby Sister.
It's her way or the Highway.
She has everything done for her, if NOT she'll "make" them do it.
She can be quick to judge.
Whinney.
A tatrum for every occasion.
More than a handful for Ed...or Edd and Eddy.
Thinks Edd is kinda cute.
Wants Eddy to MOVE...to another planet.
JIMMY
Sarah's best friend
He is always playing with girls, boys are just too tough.
He is accident prone, when ever we see him he has a different affliction, ie: band-aids, patches, casts, lumps...etc.
He is very clean.
The Ed's frighten him, "They're such brutes".
I'm surprised how much of the UK guide was accurate to what was really in the bible for them! Also surprised Danny misspelled "whiney" and "tantrum," one right after the other. Is this how Sarah spells them? ...Sorry, Danny, I yam what I yam.
PAGE 16: (images of Rolf and Jonny next to their blurbs)
ROLF
First generation of a landed immigrant family.
Nationality not important.
He's proud of his heritage.
He has peculiar traditions and/or customs.
He eats "weird" things.
He has hair on his back..... "yuck".
He confuses the Ed's to no end.
He confuses the other kids to no end.
JONNY 2x4
He is a wanderer and very inquisitive
From early morning to supper time, he is always outside playing, with his buddy, "Plank".
"Plank" is a wooden board that Jonny drew a face on with a crayon.
Jonny has wonderful conversations with Plank. ...Plank is a piece of wood.
Jonny makes himself very "accessible" to the Ed's.
Found it interesting that Rolf's bio is less clearly phrased than the UK bio set it up to be-- there they made it sound more like he mixes up who the Eds/kids are, here it's unclear whether it means that or (more likely) just means the obvious statement that everyone finds him confusing. If it's that, what a lame hollow bio Rolf got. This kid's based on you Danny, show some of that personal side!
Always loved Jonny's description, his life sounds so cute. Playing outside literally all day. Interesting to have it confirmed that Jonny drew Plank's face, I preferred to think the Eds drew him and sold him to Jonny, but whatever.
"Accessible" has always been an important vague description of Jonny to me. It really only applies to how chummy they could be with him in season 1, but it still sorta applies to his personality throughout the series as well.
PAGE 17: (images of Nazz and Kevin next to their blurbs)
NAZZ
She's cool, calm and assertive.
She is the most matured of the kids, or so she thinks.
She's into make-up and fashion magazines and Boys.
Sarah thinks she's awesome, wants to be just like her when she grows up.
When she enters a scene, all activity stops... boys freeze, they sweat, their hearts beat faster and faster. They lose their ability to talk. When she leaves, they recover and conclude it was something They ate.
She thinks the Ed's are funny.
KEVIN
He is cynical and sarcastic.
He thinks he knows the "routine". That's because he watches "60 Minutes".
It got a big laugh out of me that Kevin's description is only 2 sentences long. Nazz even has a more detailed character description from inception than Kevin. Love this for them.
Who's the Eds' rival? Well, he's cynical, sarcastic and he watches 60 Minutes, doesn't that tell you enough!?
I love the "mature... or so she thinks" remark about Nazz, a grounded flaw for her to have, being a little overcommitted to being mature like Eddy. It also perhaps suggests naiveté that makes it a little more reasonable that they didn't notice they were dumbing her down at the end of the series, but I do think the movie version of her better reflects the Bible's concept.
PAGE 18:
The Other Neighborhood Kids
Lineup of May, Lee and Marie.
The Kanker Sisters
These gals are tough. They bother, bully, provoke and bewilder everyone.
They live in a motor home park on the other side of the Cul-de-sac. The other kids have never been there.
They are proud of their Tammy Faye Baker memorabilia.
Their project "Cooking with Ketchup" closed down their school for a whole week.
No one likes them, especially the Eds.
They are determined to marry the Eds. They want them to do their dishes.
Amused that the Kankers are essentially being labeled backgrounds characters here, the role they mostly fell into in season 5. "Other" neighborhood kids...
I love that the Kankers have a school blurb to match each of the Eds', and that theirs has similar destructive-intentions to Eddy's video premiere story.
I believe all of this was all known from the UK guide as well, but still, neat stuff!
PAGES 19 & 20 (zoomed in Kanker lineup and their height chart with the Eds)
PAGES 21 & 22 (early promo art that used to be on CN's old Eds webpage, the art of the Eds eating jawbreakers at the end of ep 1 with the overhead text "Ed, Edd n Eddy love JAWBREAKERS!!!", and the art of the Eds all running with overhead text "Ed, Edd n Eddy see something shiny...."Jiggers." That weird "jiggers" statement at the end was normally edited out and I don't know what it means. Looked it up and it seems to be Chinook jargon (like when Ed said he was "skookum at X's and O's") usually said in the same sense as "CHEESE IT!")
PAGES 23+:
The rest of the pages in that bible download are from a 2004 storyboard test. The storyboard sample "It's Raining Eds," which we've seen some submitted samples of before, interpretations with Ed attempting to fly or chew gum and Edd making radioactive gum, I was surprised to find out the outline is just the original outline for the opening sequence to season 3's 'For Your Eds Only', seemingly Jonny was not written into the original outline (or was excised for easier testing purposes) but Kevin's brief cameo was. Now I wonder if they knew this would be used for a test when they wrote it, and if they would've come up with a less random way to include him if weren't forced to be a concise bit for testing's sake. (Your limit is typically 40 storyboard pages in my experience.)
I also noticed that in the included background references, the anonymous adult neighbor house next door to Ed's is officially just referred to as a "generic house."
Tumblr media
My analysis ends here, but be sure to download that sometime and enjoy all the raw storyboard sketches at the end of the document!

BNHA OC 2: Tanaka Rin
My second OC for BNHA. I came up with her second as a counterpart to Hibiki but I love her on her own as well.
Hibiki's Bio
Hero Profile
Once again, I'm so sorry there isn't a Read More. I'm on mobile and there's no damn way for me to do it.
APPEARANCE: Rin is pretty tall and of athletic build. She has bright blue hair (dyed from her natural darker blue) that, while the style changes fairly frequently, always stays short. It's never past her chin and is usually shorter than that. Because of her quirk, she is completely unaffected by the outside temperature. That means she can literally wear anything she wanted at any time, much to the annoyance of her friends. She has a decent fashion sense, but is literally blind and so can't see the colors for anything. Though even if she could, she has the confidence to wear crazy color combos. She likes people's reactions to her attire like a neon pink miniskirt in the dead of winter or a big fluffy coat in the summer heat or something. Rin does generally keep it seasonal for the most part though she still wears clashing colors. Doesn't help that Hibiki is usually the one to help Rin out in that department, and while SHE is sighted, she has absolutely no fashion sense herself. So Rin gets to enjoy walking around like a fucking disaster. For those who try to make negative comments, she cheerfully informs them that she's blind and that usually shuts them up. She also usually wears sunglasses because it's much easier to use her thermal vision when outside light is blocked out.
Tumblr media
This doesn't really do it justice, but I'm limited to what Love Nikki is giving me. I could go more clashing, but most of that also involves clothes that don't line up (like shirts going outside the coat, etc) and I hate the look of that.
PERSONALITY: Rin is bright and cheerful and very outgoing. She is persistent in her desire to befriend most people she comes across, but knows when to tone things down or when someone needs space. Like Hibiki, she will also drop everything to help someone out, though it is far less draining on her than Hibiki. She's a fixer though so she's not great to go to if you just want to vent. If you do want to do something about something or help getting something done, then she is perfect for the job.
While Rin exudes positivity, she certainly has her own insecurities, mostly stemming from her fear that she isn't good enough to be a hero. She's not the strongest or the smartest, the fastest, most technically skilled, or have the best quirk. On top of that, she's blind. While her quirk goes a long way to make her independent, she still relies on others for a lot of things and suffers from imposter's syndrome. Being at UA has actually helped her a lot to combat these feelings, but they can still hit her pretty hard. Because she hides it behind a wall of positivity, it can be hard to spot when she's beating herself up over something. Hibiki seems to be one of, if not the, only one who can consistently read her and guide her through it. Rin isn't quick to anger unless it is on someone else's behalf in which case, she really lets it loose and will want to do something about it.
QUIRK: Her quirk is Heat. Specifically, she can make herself a heat sink or heat source and can use that to control the temperature of what she touches or the air immediately surrounding her. Her entire body is therefore unaffected by extreme temperatures (and she doesn't need to regulate a normal body temperature). This means that she doesn't get burned or frostbite so she can be standing in a raging inferno and only need to worry about getting enough air to breathe. She has yet to reach the temperature limits on her body so her intensity and range is largely limited by the amount of energy she has and any environmental constraints. Because her quirk uses her body's energy, she needs to eat a lot to keep up. Her range can increase with contact with a conductive material as it can help direct the flow of energy. Her quirk doesn't produce fire or ice and so can be difficult for an opponent to track if they're not aware of it. Rin also uses her quirk as a form of thermal imaging to navigate the world around her. This means that she has a lot of independence and doesn't need external aids for most situations. Additionally, she is completely at ease in the dark as there is little change to her.
There are, however, limitations. She can't sense through barriers such as walls, even those that sighted people can see through like glass. She can sense through barriers if a conductive material goes through it to the other side, but even then the clarity is greatly diminished. Though even that can be very useful. Another limitation is that she can't read anything printed or written on a page, screen, sign, etc. She just sees that there is a paper there. For school work, she is allowed a laptop that has a text-to-speech option so that she can hear back her notes after she types them. Rin will also have one of her classmates go over her notes to make sure she didn't miss anything, though usually her own notes tend to be better since it's faster to type than to physically write things down. For non-school work, ie. when she's out and about, she has Hibiki or someone else with her read something out to her. She would even ask strangers, but this usually only happens when she's out shopping and needs to know a price. The same goes for colors. Rin was previously sighted so she remembers colors and even processes her thermal vision via colors but she doesn't know something's real color. Hibiki has gotten pretty good at describing colors to her.
PAST: Not nearly as sordid (or detailed) as Hibiki's to be sure. She has a loving family and an older brother. Her childhood was fairly normal to be sure. Rin was always popular in school because everyone just liked her and she always made an effort for anyone to feel included. Especially the new girl, Hibiki, who keeps to herself in the corner. And she even succeeds in becoming her friend! Yay!
But her life changed forever when she turned 11. All she wanted was to figure out the limitations of her quirk. Naturally this meant trying to get her hand as hot as she could as fast as she could. Turns out that really hot things get really really bright and that prolonged exposure to bright light can permanently damage your eyes. After one too many times, her sight never returns. After that, Rin was a mess. Losing a sense was hard and it didn't help that everyone treated her like a fragile porcelain doll. Almost everyone. Hibiki didn't. In fact, she was the same calm voice of reason that she always was. In fact little had changed between them. Just the subject matter of their conversations. It was Hibiki who pointed out that maybe she could try using her quirk to sense things like the goggles police and heroes sometimes use. And like that, they went from friends to inseparable best friends.
They applied to UA together and while they both got in, Hibiki didn't make it to the hero course like she did. Initially Rin was nervous because Hibiki helped her out a lot over the last few years and now they could only be together during lunch or off hours (even though Hibiki was convinced that being in different classes mean they would drift apart, Rin insisted otherwise). She would have to face being blind alone for the first time. That anxiety didn't last very long because her class was pretty cool about it. Her teachers also made sure she had proper accommodations both in and out of class.
The sports festival was very exciting because she was able to see just how much she'd grown, but Hibiki as well. Rin made sure that they did their handshake in front of everyone to show both Hibiki and the world that whatever happened, they were still friends. And even as Rin finally knocked Hibiki out of the ring, both were smiling. Even though she didn't win, getting third was pretty damn cool.
Rin does her field training with Backdraft in the Musutafu fire department. She finds that she actually quite likes rescue work even though she still wants to fight villains. She continues to train, increasing her stamina to use her quirk more and in larger strength.
Even though she was sad that one of her classmates chose to drop the hero course, she was very happy that that meant that Hibiki was now joining the class. She was very active in getting Hibiki accepted into the group. Rin also worked hard to make sure that Hibiki was all caught up as far as the hero course was concerned. Rin got her provisional license and did her internship with a hero that was more villain-centric to get that kind of experience and was particularly useful for night missions because of her thermal vision, but it made her lose a lot of sleep. She started taking naps between classes and during lunch, relying on Hibiki to sneak her snacks during class to keep going.
OTHER SKILLS AND TIDBITS: Rin is the resident Hibiki whisperer. If you ever wanted Hibiki to do something, your best bet is to get Rin on it. Rin is down for pretty much anything and can talk Hibiki into pretty much anything even for a more passive role.
She has ADHD. She has it mostly under control, but when she doesn't, Hibiki knows how to pull her back together and get back to work.
Because Rin's body is resistant to extreme temperatures, when she thinks she is getting sick, she will "flash" to basically incinerate the pathogen. Unfortunately this also burns away any good bacteria she has in her gut as well as any non-digested food still in her system. The combo makes her nauseous anyway. She gets scolded for it every time but still insists she'll get it right some day.
She is the undisputed best cuddler because she can make her body temp juuuust the right level of warmth for whoever she's cuddling. This is especially popular during the winter.
By default, her body temperature is the normal and average level. But sometimes it will accidentally rise or lower itself without her noticing, usually due to emotions. She doesn't really notice until it's pointed out by someone that she accidentally burned or froze something.
Rin is really good to have in the kitchen because she can tell when things are cooked through to the exact temp it should be, make sure something is cooked evenly, or retrieve an ingredient that accidentally fell into boiling water too early, etc. Her favorite "party trick" is for when people are unfamiliar with her quirk, she will "accidentally" lean on a hot stove and freak them out.
She has a pretty mischievous streak in her. While she doesn't like initiating pranks, she loves being an accomplice in them. Rin is staunchly neutral during prank wars but is more than willing to lend her services to either side.
Rin likes "watching" movies even though she can't see the images on the screen. She enjoys making up her own as she hears the dialogue. The first question her friends usually have when the credits roll is "okay, what do you THINK just happened?" A lot of the time, the answer is a lot more fun than what actually happened because she has a really active imagination.
She can read Japanese braille, but it doesn't come up incredibly often. Rin is in the process of learning Japanese sign language because she wants to be good representation for disabilities and advocate for accessibility.
Rin doesn't like "turning off" her thermal vision very much, but it can get tiring after a while. She tends to do so during class since she doesn't really need it then. She'll only "turn off" outside of class if she's alone with Hibiki since she was around from the beginning. She's okay being vulnerable around her.
She doesn't like having long hair herself, but greatly enjoys playing with Hibiki's.
Rin is pansexual and has known since junior high. But she hasn't done a lot of dating since she only seems to have a consistent crush on a certain someone who just doesn't seem interested.
Rin doesn't like travelling very far by herself because she's afraid that she will suddenly get too tired to maintain her thermal vision, leaving her vulnerable, lost, and alone.
She really likes cats, but it's kind of a problem because Hibiki is allergic. Hibiki will still go with her to cat cafes to keep her company, but Rin usually feels really bad about it and so will usually ask other people to join her before resorting to asking Hibiki.
Just as Hibiki is the best hider in hide and seek, Rin is the best seeker because of her thermal vision. She is no longer allowed to be seeker.
