october! slowly getting better about listening to new music, and i think it shows! open for names :)
going to put little explanations by each one cuz i don't have any predictions for november this time!
lorde - pure heroine : this one's just kinda snuck up on me, i've been revisiting where i was in 2017 a lot as of late and this album was like Integral to me then. it's still flawless btw top 3 of all time
cafune - love songs for the end : i just am a weirdly big fan of them? literally every song except shadowboxing has been a Thing for me at some point. currently it's dead 2 me (so naive)
the volunteers - the volunteers : just a really fun rock record?? reminds me of wolf alice which i LOVE blue weekend
jessica lea mayfield - make my head sing : my random country/grunge sneak, she's been a super obscure fave of mine for many years and this album just kinda hit recently with the whole resurgent trauma energy
lucy dacus - home video : to be honest i haven't been STREAMING this that much, but instead i've literally been singing the songs in my day-to-day life. partner in crime, brando, christine, please stay... literally integral to my functioning
ethel cain - preacher's daughter : i took this off rotation for a few months to avoid getting sick of it bc truthfully i could just stream it on loop forever. been really obsessed with thoroughfare and strangers as of late
paramore - re: this is why : remi wolf's version of you first kinda carried, but tbh i've just been enjoying this? i really love the base album, but i also deeply love having the alt versions to diversify the rotation
troye sivan - something to give each other : i'm sorry but he just makes good music. one of your girls & silly go fucking crazy
pretty sick - makes me sick makes me smile : this is just some trashy emo teenager rock thing but it's just kind of a vibe? lilith song has been on my mind forever
vashti bunyan - just another diamond day : i didn't really fall in DEEP love with this in the way others did, and i think she has better albums, but i would be lying if i said i didn't revisit this the most atm. title track and (the not-technically-on-it-but-it-should've-been) train song rattle around my brain constantly
hitsujibungaku - our hope : god this is one of those releases i can't tire of. i'm so excited for their new album... thank you random youtube recommendations for showing me the video to one of the songs by pure chance
big thief - dragon new warm mountain i believe in you : the juggernaut of the chart has returned... i've just been revisiting this a lot and god is it still so exquisite... the only place and dried roses supremacy
the dead texan - the dead texan : i've been meaning to listen to this ambient thing all year and god i'm glad i did. peak vibes
anri - timely!! : i have a couple of like super recurrect city pop releases as this time last year i did a big deep dive into the genre, and this is the one that consistently pops up the most just because it's SO catchy and fun. well worth the hype imo
midori - shinsekai : absolutely batshit jazz and punk fusions, track 3 has the singer making gorilla sounds and i've been obsessed with it ever since. what is up with the one random man ballad in the center tho
yeule - softscars : first time i heard this it floored me so hard i almost cried. i never really clicked with her stuff but this just makes sense to me? it's messy and big and bold and earnest and hurt and it just fits where i am rn
alvvays - blue rev : god the sleeper classic of all time for me. the way i didn't care about it for like several months after hearing it and now it's basically a mainstay. such is the power of putting bored in bristol on your album
otoboke beaver - itekoma hits : this goes hand in hand with shinsekai. just batshit insane fast punk music it's great and fun i love it
shygirl - nymph : tbh this only got a relisten from me bc it's a year after its release, and honestly? well worth it. i didn't really love alias but this has really stuck the landing w me
taylor swift - midnights : ok so i know this is gonna be the like "why is this on here" one but like hear me out. see above that i was revisiting stuff a year after it came out, and also this was like The First Thing Announced When I Got Home. tbh my horrible hot take is that this is kind of a comfort album for me now?? it reminds me of oct '22 when i felt like for once in my fucking life things were gonna be ok. it's not her best but what can you do
olivia rodrigo - guts : this is like a single hair away from fully confirmed as my aoty this year and i hate it bc i look so basic but also consider: it is just that good to me
kero kero bonito - time n place : dear future self and swimming were big moments for me during this time in 2018, and my life is kinda eerily lining up with 2018 again so hearing a song called "dear future self" that reminds me of that time is a lot to process
ariana grande - thank u, next : random ass pick i know, but idk! it's her best, it's very subtly a concept album and it's unironically thematically coherent if you're terminally online enough to read into it thoroughly. also fake smile, bad idea, bloodline, in my head, etc. just slap sorry
pearly drops - a little disaster : thank you kabob for giving me the push to give this a shot. after grimes went full unsupportable, i kinda have been itching to fill the niche she used to fill vocally, and honestly this fits? it's weirdly glacial and funny and deadpan kinda it's fun i like this album a lot
lamp - at komoyo street : i'm sorry but one of the best album covers of all time and the music lives up to the hype
-
ok that's all of them whew jesus christ
next month is relatively light on new releases, so i'll probs just play catchup with all the insane shit i have in my backlog. see you next month!

🎤 what song reminds you of hlayk??
💋 Guilty pleasure ship but I don't have the strength!
Sorry using my phone and won't let me C&P topics and I cannot remember exact wording 😭
oh my gosh, what song does remind me the most of hlayk well okay, actually I have two answers to that 1) Carlo's Song by Noah Kahan :
They tell me, "grief is just love letting go" They say it like milk has been spilled on the floor They they don't know who I am anymore Well, I just have never shown anger before
like it's just SO George in hlayk that i tear up every time i hear it
2) Brando by Lucy Dacus for the much more literal reason that in it she says:
You say, "Here's lookin' at you, kid" Thinking I wouldn't understand the reference You admit you think we're fated I'll be lucky if I'm your third wife
every time i hear it i smile like she's shouting out my fic which is not at all what is happening there
Guilty pleasure ship - I mean, there's not really anything i'm too scared to write - i like Dean and Seamus, that might be one, maybe Salazar and Godric? idk, i don't have anything I feel guilty about shipping!!!!!! help!!!!!!

omg ur ask abt brando lucy dacus being pierresteban combined with ur fic has made me like. not be able to listen to the song normal HAHAHA like
youre yelling at me stella and im laughing cause you think youre brando but youll never come close - SO PIERRE. SOOO him being like, up himself in that way (affectionate) and esteban being more grounded about how he perceives not only pierre but them together
you admit you think we're fated, ill be lucky if im your third wife - just like... i think that pierre thinks a lot about fate, and meant to be, and his own faith, and how that translates into like his own view of the world and relationships. and esteban again, looking at the relationships pierre is having with people (piarles...) and also downplaying himself because WAAAH
thats only something you would say in the car we've been breathing the same air for too long - i can almost like. karting to present, sharing spaces, being in too long road trips together, but also obviously 'say in the car' their racing career, breathing the same air (same spaces, same career paths) for too long, the inherent like clashing in their relationship, but also the acknowledgement kind of that... it will pass???
obviously the chorus. OBVIOUSLY THEM
"would it have killed you to call me pretty instead" so many thoughts about this. so many
if the snow wasn't coming down so hard i would open the door and walk home its only a couple miles - i can literally see them becoming frustrated with each other like this and they're both too stubborn to back out of it now, especially as adults with all their history... SCREAM!!!! completely overcome, worms in my brain
every single song off lucy dacus' home video needs a fic to it I'm not kidding in the slightest. and first time needs at least two (starfish on the kitchen floor and TBD but it's on my mind). Ok under the cut cuz long rambly answer
i do think Lucy's narrator in her songs has a remarkable bite to her perspective which i really appreciate here. like. the idea of this guy - thinking he's great acting so cool and then realizing later it's just because she's young and he wasn't any different than anyone else. that perspective cuts i think because we've all - outgrown people like that, right? and it works well despite not being a direct parallel. she captures these emotions that are so universal with such specific detail.
fate... oh fate. i do think religion is one of my fav themes/topics in writing and fic is no exception. i think with pierre i do have a slight aversion just because of my own lack of familiarity with French Catholicism and like. I don't really want to learn? So it's sort of like. How do you play in a way where it's clearly meaningful but not disrespectful and so on. Hence my tendency towards Esteban POV as well. Anyway. The idea that - fate is the only thing that can bring them together, not choice, is a fascinating one. Especially if you sort of go - esteban and pierre were fated to fall out and fated for Alpine and Charles is il predestinado but pierre and Charles choose each other. How does that all fit?
I like your interpretation of the car like a lot!! I've definitely never thought of it like that. You really can taste the stale air of a car ride - of a relationship - that's gone on too long. And it will pass... It will!!
the snow.... not to being it back but... fate again. What must the circumstances demand of you... I will say this segment "what could go wrong.... who doesn't know left from right from wrong" is one of my favorite little bits of a song I love completely and entirely.
I accept and thank you for your brain worms. We both know I have them too!!

oh you were offering rec! nvm then, give me recs please (both books and songs)
ok for books i am going to recommend…
kim jiyoung born 1982 is honestly one of the strangest books i’ve read, but i really loved it and it was incredibly thoughtful and honestly too real
perks of being a wallflower, i know a lot of people have seen the movie but not read the book and it’s honestly so good and soso important to me
normal people by sally rooney, i do have some mixed opinions on this book but i will defend it with my life, it’s about two people and their relationship but more importantly it’s about class and how it affects our relationships, and also about abuse, self love, communication and mental health. the characters and writing style can be a little off putting but i would argue they’re just very real (hence, “normal people” haha)
daisy jones and the six is about a rock band in the 70s and idk if that’s a super compelling explanation but it’s amazing i swear, also the authors other book the seven husbands of evelyn hugo is one of my all time faves,
i’m glad my mom died, huge TW (tw on most of these books tbh, but i digress) but it’s popular rn for a reason, it’s really well written and thoughtful and if you grew up watching icarly you’ll definitely appreciate it
songs
be my mistake by the 1975
stoned at the nail salon by lorde (personal fave off solar power, she’s probably my second favorite artist after taylor tho)
VBS by lucy dacus (and nonbeliever, night shift, kissing lessons, my mother and i, brando, etc, i just love her rn)
codependency by orla gartland (literally all of her songs, one of my favorite artists ever she just gets me)
dead sea by the lumineers

I'm going insane about the fact that for 4 years of my life I was in a relationship with a guy who didnt tell me I was pretty because he thought I didnt wanna hear that type of simple, "trite" compliment (despite me telling him multiple times that I wish he would tell me when he thought I looked nice or pretty or beautiful). In contrast, the only pet name Tom uses for me is Beautiful and just this morning he said I was the prettiest person he's ever met. Like, who knew it didnt always have to be a battle to get a compliment from your partner?

17 Questions, 17 People
thanks @provenance, @sheisraging, & @bartbarthelme for the tag
Nicknames: crys, my last name, kiki (to my niece & nephew only), munchkin & baby girl (to my mom & dad, respectively)
Zodiac: scorpio, and boy fucking am i
Height: 5′5″ (& 3/4)
Hogwarts house: i literally couldn’t tell you if you paid me (i think there’s a mean one? maybe that?)
Last thing I googled: how do you know if a bell pepper is bad (am a culinary genius)
Followers: between 300 & 400 which is weird bc i just reblog other people’s posts mostly
Song stuck in my head: brando - lucy dacus
How much sleep: probably between 4 & 6 hours regularly
Lucky number: don’t know if it’s lucky, but 2 has always been a fave (and even numbers over odd ALWAYS)
Dream job: something creative/in the arts (or a perpetual student)
Wearing: a tank top & shorts bc old ny apartments mean it’s 90 degrees in december
Favorite song: i have literally 15,000 favorite songs, so i’m just going with an old fave, ruby tuesday - the rolling stones
Favorite instrument: trumpet & violin
Aesthetic: basic preppy bitch (think lots of stripes, sweaters, peacoats, & flats)
Favorite Author: similar (though not quite as many) to the song question.  i’ve been reading some shirley jackson lately, so i’ll go with her at the moment.
Favorite animal noise: my cat purring on my lap
Something random: i never learned how to drive (i got as far as getting a permit in my 20s then got busy then moved back to ny where i absolutely do not need to know how) but road trips are my very favorite thing on the planet, and so i am a very conscientious co-pilot/shotgunner
if you see this and wanna do it, consider yourself tagged

ellie’s albums of the month - june 2021
usually i don’t do these til like, the last day of the month or a few days into the next month, but i Knew these weren’t gonna change so i thought i’d do it early 😳 everyone rly was just like “hey it’s june lol let’s release the best albums we’ve ever done” huh?? 😦
jubilee - japanese breakfast: starting off w/ just an absolutely Perfect album 🥺 like, i already knew i was gonna love it from how gr8 the prerelease singles were, but when it came out it Still blew me away w/ how good it is 🤯 “paprika” especially is just fucking Gorgeous, it might be one of the prettiest songs i’ve ever heard 🤧
stay alive - laura jane grace: ok so this is the only one on here that wasn’t new this month 😅 but even tho it came out last year, i hadn’t got round 2 rly listening 2 it until recently 😔 and i can’t believe i’d been sleeping on it bcos Aaaahhh!!! i Love it 🥺 i mean it’s no surprise bcos i love everything laura does, but this album rly is s/t special.. obvs i enjoy the idk, heaviness?? of against me! too but it’s real sweet 2 have a lil (mostly) acoustic laura album too 😌
home video - lucy dacus: so disclaimer: obvs i love lucy dacus 😧 but even tho Now i’m in love w/ her first 2 albums too, it still took a while for me to go from like, just liking them to loving them?? but This album i fell in love w/ Instantly 😳 definitely the best thing she’s ever done and not 2 compare/pit bad bitches against each other, but i think it’s probs kicked “stranger in the alps” off from being my fav like, boygenius members related thing 🤯 “brando” is probs my fav song on here, obvs “thumbs” is up there too, and i love “christine” a lot too 🥺💕
megabear - me rex: so this one’s So good i already made a post abt it b4 this 😳 i summed up what’s so cool abt it in that post, but since then i’ve listened 2 it 3 more times on shuffle and it’s just like.. Literally amazing how well it works + how good it is 🥺 i’ve actually teared up a couple of times over how gr8 some of the combinations of songs/transitions between songs ended up in my ~shuffles~ 😭
