It's 2024 can we please stop saying it's normal to trace or copying an entire drawing and pretending it's 100% your work? Just bc you changed the character or added clothes on a base you found on pinterest it doesn't mean you created original art
#wren text tag#tw: vent#like tracing and copying are morally grey. If you want to trace to learn stuff or practice or study it's ok ig#maybe don't post it online or if you have to... don't trace from picture/other people artworks/bases you found online w/o giving credits#unless it's a base an artist made specifically for tracing purposes#I think this depends on where you draw the line bc I'm much more strict abt copying/tracing from art rather than photographs 🤔#at least with photos you have to do some mental exercise for your mucle memory + simplification studies#personally I don't like tracing bc it feels lazy like are you a copyprinter 😐🤨#this vent needs some lore otherwise this looks so fucking umpromted it's almost confusing 🙄🙄🙄#kinda found out sb who was copying or tracing both from fucking pose references from Pinterest and other people artworks 😅#like poses ref ig they are ok but you should check the Terms of Condition of the original artist first. For the artworks plagiarized. DUDE#surprised no one has found out yet but if I see another copied drawing my netiquette is leaving my body and I'm turning into a HATER#or another comment like “omg your poses looks so dynamic”. I'm flying#btw I blocked them so my dash is free. Sadly we are also in the same disc server so I'm kinda cooked#thinking of leaving it so I don't have to start drama and discussions. I'm not a fan of call-out and stuff and if I can avoid it I will#btw I say copied/traced bc some are traced over while others are hopefully just eyeballed. What bothers me is the amount of plagiarized art#like almost half of those fanarts are copied poses. The other half are character standing on a white bg. I hope those aren't copied as well#it's already bad... but if only was just for the bases. That one traced artwork can almost be damaging to the fanbase reputation 🤦‍♀️ smh#there are only a few artist in that part of the fandom I don't need an art thief drama. I guess I will shut up and look away 😑#anyway that's the lore which didn't help with my Art Block. Actually it made worse. That's why it took me so long to be back lol 🤣😂😭#pov: you log on tumblr 🥰 and you have an art crisis 😍#Are u telling me I could have done that? Copying and tracing and taking all the credits instead of wasting time learning anatomy?! 🤯#Ok the last tag was sarcastic but wouldn't be funny. Loved vagueposting tho 💖🥰#And now that this post is published I can finally rest. I had this thing in drafts since September#To whom is asking about who this person is. I won't tell. I just want to forget what I saw. Ty and bye 💖✨️

Yo, my dudes, trace art. I was thinking about it because of this post about mental health and running the dishwasher twice, and my version of it is tracing art on photographs. Despite knowing that taking parts or all of a photograph as ref/base is common practice in the industry, I still have that stupid block about tracing being lazy and you have to redraw the whole thing to learn. I LOVE studying anatomy and learning shit, but when you’re burnt out, you just want to have a nice drawing that makes you happy at the end of your drawing session. Which is hard when you’re tired af. No brainpower for anatomy today? Trace the fuck out of a photo to make your OCs. Bam. Art is done. Sometimes you just need to thirst on half orcs you know. These are traced from a shirtless dude I found on pinterest. Thanks shirtless dude from pinterest.

When you were developing your own unique style (which, btw, i adore) what were some of your inspirations? Which artists did you study and what kind of tutorials did you use to springboard off of?
Oh that’s so sweet of you!!Oh dear so this is gonna be very long, so I’ll put a little ‘keep reading” thing so this isn’t a whole book on yalls’ dash. xD(EDIT i dont think it worked and im too lazy to fix it so sufferrrr)
So growing up, and as a VERY young child I gathered quite a few art books, most of them anime based. I think through middle school and maybe freshmen year of high school I did have a lot of inspiration from Manga like styles mainly from artbooks that I just so happened to get over the years. However, I did always have a draw to style that were similar to Disney, but not as perfect, if that makes any sense? I remember having a Deviantart, and there there was artist under Pookadoodle. I adored their work and always wanted my style to shift from a not so great anime style to something that what I could best describe at the time as “Disney, but way more creative”. I loved it when artist really push character expression, make a nose big or someone ridiculously square and short. for years I tried shifting my style into something like it, even more expressive, but never did because I wanted to develop my own style at the same time. Sometimes it made things even more frustrating because my style was INCREDIBLY inconsistent. (Here’s some arts as far back as 2014 to 2017, using pictures of an oc I’ve drawn over the years)2014:

2015:(lmbo my art got worse in some spots)

2015 Honerable mention (I DREW GF BEFORE I EVEN WATCHED THE SHOW?? IT WAS A REQUEST):

From this point forward, is when I started drawing an absolute unhealthy amount of GF, and I started putting my art on Tumblr. xDIf you want to see more of my older stuff (tho some of it is hidden lmbo), check out my rankin’ old DA here. From here I started taking college level classes and so my artwork improved immensely, but it still wasn’t quite what I wanted? I felt that my character design was bland, not enough of that body and design variation that I wanted? So overtime I began to discover artists that were leaning in the direction of the art style that I always craved. Some examples that I can think of on top of my head that really inspire me today are:Tom BoothSam Nassour(And so many that I can’t remember right now, but I’ve got a huge pinterest folder with art that inspires me art style wise and what not here)AS FOR TOOTERAL DO I HAVE THE THING FOR YOUI have SO MANY REFS that I have used over the years literally through pinterest and I have 90% of it organized into folders and such on thereHere’s my tooteral folder, in it are subboards that are labeled pertaining to what they teach you about!!!I hope this answered your question, at least just a little! Really for a while most of my inspirations are found on whims and finding random art, but lately Pinterest has been my tool to sort it all. xDI really recommend looking at that tooteral folder because there is stuff in there that I reference CONSTANTLY.Have a lovely day bean
