Just some ramblings about the canon Shattered Glass continuity. The craziest thing about the Shattered Glass continuity to me is how Megatron, who was a mathematics professor, predicted that there would be civil war.

Like I assume they meant that he was able to predict this through like observation of the political instability/climate currently happening around him. But the way it’s phrased makes it sound like he computed the probability of there being a civil war. Like my guy really used math to figure out there will be civil war and made the Decepticons beforehand to resolve it.

Now that also makes me wonder if he predicted that Optronix would be the one to cause civil war? Like Megatron out here trying to obtain omniscience through math of all things.

Also this guy invented transformation technology? And like came back from the dead?? And he forgave his murderer??? Like SG Megatron is really just… “what a mech, you know?” Sksksksk

I mean to be fair, Optronix is also pretty crazy. Like my guy was an archivist who realized life had no meaning and decided he would make history remember him by being the world’s worst warlord. Like that’s crazy. He’s one of the most (probably actually the most) sadistic/evil version of Optimus Prime (which is crazy that he’s still a Prime in this continuity!) but he was able to replicate Megatron’s transformation technology so he isn’t an idiot despite his brutality.

(Entering MegOP territory now cause I can’t be stopped) Man, you know, maybe that’s why Optronix is so pissed all the time in this continuity. There was only one other mech who had the same intellect as him but said mech is too much of a nice guy (again, Megatron forgiving Cyclonus even though the guy killed him is crazy). So Optronix being his crazy sadistic self scared off the guy. I can see why he is relentless about SG Megatron (even being pissed that he wasn’t the one who got to kill Megatron lmao). Like Optronix fumbled the only mech intellectually-equal to him. I’d be embarrassed too /j

(A mild panic on the topic of: This is not a question, oh god, this is NOT a question. This is a recommendation of a fandom at BEST.)

So I was reading a fic one day and my brain went very quickly in succession:

a) /Oh/, this is the good stuff

b) No wonder you think so, remember spydoc telepathy edition (And you, Taka, are like an ambassador of that land in my mind)

c) Actually many fics from this fandom are like this

d) Do we think…?

So I had two facts:

1. This is a thing someone I have a great respect for would probably enjoy.

2. There was no indication Taka has seen or engaged in the fandom of Pacific Rim. Despite its notoriety in this neck of the woods due to the concept of drifting in particular.

And what I am doing with those facts is telling you this. I think you are great and I think you would like the fics of Pacific Rim. So if you feel like checking it out, it’s very low effort on entrance. Only one movie to see. Or two. Depends who you ask.

Here are two excerpts to judge for yourself. (Is this a spoiler? I know people for whom this would be a spoiler. For me it’s a tester.)

1) What’s a Little B&E Between Friends? By VoiceOfNurse (Part 20, Chapter 1)

Newt was aware, in as much as Hermann was aware. It was difficult to separate himself out, when Hermann’s mind was locked around him like a steel trap made of numbers and chalk dust and spite. They were one organism in two parts- four lungs, drawing breath, two hearts beating in time. There was cold, and there was pain, but it was far away. 

There is no room for (masters-monsters-precursors) here. They are (insects-vermin-insignificant) when faced with (memory-language-connection). We are (brilliant-unstoppable-rockstars). We are (music-logic-science). We are (Newt-and-Hermann) and they are nothing. 

2) What’s a Little B&E Between Friends? By VoiceOfNurse (Part 20, Chapter 2)

They were Drifting. Tendo couldn’t quite work out the whys and hows of it, especially now that he was being bitten to within an inch of his fucking life, but he was certain. He’d hurt Hermann by moving too fast, probably jostled the guy’s leg, actually, which was folded weirdly under him with Newt on top, but the closest set of teeth bit him. Newt wasn’t even conscious in the traditional sense of the word, but Hermann was. Hermann was, and apparently Newt’s teeth were available to rectify the situation. Newt’s urges, too, because Tendo didn’t really picture Hermann as a biter. 

HELLO MY FRIEND oh my days I'm SO sorry but I'm laughing so much because this probably happened because tumblr search function is useless but 'no indication' sksksksk, oh my sweet summer child: here's the pacific rim tag on my blog LMAO - or, even better, the entire pacrim au I came up with for s12 of doctor who one time. Also. Also. Buddy. This is so funny, I love you so much. Are you aware that I'm obsessed with the works of one of the biggest Pacific Rim fanfic writers ever? I did, to be fair, literally take their name off my blog description yesterday to replace it with Bloodywood instead, and I'm more on the Stargate Universe side of things these days - but cleanwhiteroom is one of my favourite authors, and I read Designations Congruent with Things before I touched any of their Stargate material. If, my dear anon, you've not heard of cwr, then I really highly recommend their stuff, but I'll add a link below and see if I can dig up the other fic that I really loved from back in the day. Thank you for the fic rec though!! Those excerpts look excellent haha, I shall check that fic out when I get chance because you're absolutely right I love that kind of thing.

(and, later SGU - but I mean, mostly just cleanwhiteroom tbh. I was 16yo and I imprinted okay. But there were also other fics too, and they had an influence. Guh, Newt/Hermann post-drift fics are PEAK man)

Okay but actually let me tell you the story of how I got into pacrim because I think it's hilarious. So most people get into fandoms by like, yknow. Watching the film, reading the book, seeing the show, etc. I mean, how else would you do it? I'll tell you how. I was pottering about on deviantArt, back in the the grand old year of - oh, it must have been 2014. 2015? Something like that. Anyway, I stumbled across some Newt and Hermann fanart, and I didn't know the fandom but I was intrigued and REALLY liked the artstyle (I think the artist was feriowind?) - anyway I went on their profile and was MORE intrigued when I found they'd done some gorgeous cover art for THIS FIC, which got me so curious that I decided to read it. Without having watched the film. What I did was: read the plot summary on wikipedia, watched a couple of newt and hermann fanvids/clips (LIKE THIS ONE) so I could see them/hear their voices right, and then just blitz on through the fic with google images open in another tab so I could google thing like 'the shatterdome' and 'the LOCCENT pacific rim' and stuff like that for visual reference SKKSSK. Damn this is a throwback, I'm having a great time. ANYWAY. Read the fic. Loved it. Read the sequel. LOVED IT. Started looking for more fanart and stuff like that - and found a bunch of people kept on mentioning this fic called Designations Congruent with Things. Searched it up, found it on ao3, read the first 6 chapters and it almost melted my brain LMAO so I stopped. Then I couldn't stop thinking about it and I came back to it and oh my days. Oh my days. It fully rewrote my brain and DAMN I was obsessed. By this point I was vibrating in place at the mere thought of actually SEEING THE FILM, YKNOW. The film I'd read hundreds of thousands of words of fanfic about. Anyway, my friend who got secret santa for me that year literally had the easiest job on the planet HAHAHAHA so I watched it on Christmas Day and it was so so funny because like. You probably are aware of how much damn lore this film has. Like I knew the names of most of the jaegers that aren't even mentioned in the movie, I knew about Caitlin Lightcap and Sergio D'onofrio, but I had NO IDEA what was extended canon and what was fanon and what was actually. Y'know. In the film. So when I watched it I was like BUT WHERE'S LIGHTCAP for most of it HAHAHAH, but yeah it was great. SO GREAT. Guh I love the concept of the drift SO SO MUCH it's absolutely fascinating and just. AHH!! So so good.

Anyway. Absolutely losing it, bless. Sorry this is all over the place, I'm very tired but my goodness. Yes. Talk to me about drift bonds any day of the week, I'm here for it. also, those lyrics fit the swimming pool scene so well (the translation was perfect dw). i can't tell you how many times i've watched that scene over and over, it's just so natural and intimate. the way won almost breathes out more than says "i missed you." after that first kiss in the pool? it was like he could finally breathe again after having sarang in his arms and seeing her face up close and clear. you can literally feel how much they missed each other and craved each other's touch even though they were together all day. god. them!!!

now as for your points: i definitely believe we're going to see more of that ahjussi, bc the minute Sang Sik mentioned that he's the longest working employee at the hotel i saw the lightbulbs go off in Won's head. he might kill Sang Sik when they get home after the fun he had bossing him around (that and the way he had to suffer seeing the back of Sa Rang for most of the time there, more on that later) but he'll make it by the skin of his teeth out of Won's office for that information alone, sksksksk

and that brings me something that i forgot to bring up in the answer to your last ask with regards to Won's trauma—he's very touchy when it comes to the subject of his mother. we saw it during his interactions with Hwa Ran where she tells him to be careful otherwise he might end up like her (iirc he left the house and ran out to the overlook[? is that the word? i feel like i might know where that is bc of Heart Signal 4 and filming locations but don't mind me i could be wrong] over Seoul right after that), we saw it in the interview when Sa Rang brought up the revised questions about his mother (hello again ep 3 panic attack and lashing out at her afterwards), and we saw it again when he lied (!!!) to Sa Rang during the dinner that he wasn't curious about what had happened to her anymore. (we know it was a lie bc of his body language and how he [once again] got up and left the room) he is the definition of 'i never bothered looking for my mother / i am angry on behalf of my mother', and, by extension, is not very good at hiding his emotions whenever that subject is brought up, so i think whatever new information we do get in ep 11 will be very crucial to whatever happens to him at that anniversary dinner (if he gets the info beforehand ofc). in contrast, Sa Rang's memories of her mother seem to be much happier, despite the obvious grief of her death—it appears that she knows what happened to her mother (although we don't yet), she doesn't hesitate to talk about her and the dreams that she had to work at King Hotel, and it's very obvious that she is the driving force behind most, if not all, of what she does.

what i expect to see from a typical k-drama cliché is that her mother and Won's mother have some sort of connection, bc it's either the main couple are long lost childhood besties or someone's parents f*cked somebody else's parents over or the parents just had something going on and never told the kids. how they execute that (whether they met briefly in the hotel or whether they knew each other otherwise), or if they never execute that at all and skip the trope, is what i'm looking forward to, and i'm very curious as to what happens.

now, as much as i do not want them to come within fifteen feet of this ride-or-die couple that is SaWon Hwa Ran and CEO Gu are both going to be a problem. that's all but guaranteed—remember when they had that argument in the house and he said 'there is no such thing as love for people like us'? the premise that they've been setting up for us is that there is a 99.9% chance that Won's father will not take it lying down if he finds out his son 1. has a girlfriend (who is not of his status per say) and 2. it's the best talent of the hotel. and that's sad, in a way, that he's become so indifferent to anything but his own success that he cannot fathom that someone would take all of their resources to go save one person (cliff side heli trip *cough*). Hwa Ran reflects this kind of mentality too, when she says that only those who fight for themselves with everything on the line win, unlike those who fight for others in order to protect them (that's the same scene where he tells her he didn't want to fight, i went back and checked), and she won't blink twice at meddling with either of them if it means she's back in the running for successor. (when Oumou Sangaré said in Mogoya that 'people today / they're not loyal / humanity / i'm concerned about them' she meant it, these folks out here with the Korean version of Succession rn) but remember that these are two Gu siblings, never mind the half, and so if she makes a move it's unlikely that Won will back down either.

ending with the swimming pool scene again bc (like you) i've gone back and kept watching and you're right—there is this intimacy about it that feels about as natural as breathing. i mentioned in the tags of one of my KTL reblogs (and OG posts i think) that Won's love language is probably touch (acts of service as well but we're focusing on the touch rn), and the acting choices that Junho makes here amplifies that almost immediately. i SCREAM, the fast and furious comparison LMAO. you are so so right, i cannot unthink this now djdjdjdjd. it's sad because both Fast and 911 started out pretty good but then just went on. and on. and on. i really wonder how long 911 will actually stay until they realize that they've completely overshot it. your reply made me think more about the family dynamics in the show. in the first season specifically, we actually had a setup with the main characters (except hen, i think) who, in some way or another, were or at least felt kinda alone? the show being about found family made a lot of sense for all characters back then. however, they simply are at a completely different point 5 seasons later that it just falls flat. you're right, all of them got their own family units outside of work now, all of them do sm better mentally and emotionally, and none of them feel as connected to each other anymore because of that (and maybe because the necessity for it simply does not exist any longer). so why go on with this shtick? then again, isn't that also true for 911 LS, with them having family outside of their crew? however, somehow it feels different to me, and i think i can pinpoint the reason: 911 LS actually invested time to build up friendships on screen and continuously makes an effort to show the characters bonding, so i truly believe it when they say that they are friends. with OG 911, they are "family", but i do not really feel it anymore? i do not wanna sound too harsh but it's simply my current feelings. family does not automatically equal being close, and i think the show has lost the plot a bit with actually, yk, showing us that these characters are real true friends who would hang out even if you removed all other family ties. i cannot for the life of me recall a reason why buck and chim, hen and eddie, eddie and maddie etc would actually hang out if they weren't "connected" by work or some pre-existing family ties.

ah yes, owen strand. in all honesty, i did not like the choice of him being such a big focus point either. the real strength truly lies in all the other characters, who all really bring something to the table. i was honestly invested in all their stories because they seemed to have something outside of work that is integral to their identity, and that just stands out positively in comparison to OG 911, where the characters' contribution to the narrative and society seems to be mostly linked to their job, and their relationships are also mostly tied through their jobs. 911 LS generally focusing more on the characters' uniqueness, no matter if it's their race, religion, culture, disabilities, or any queer topics, relativizes the importance of their jobs without overshadowing it. yes, they do incredibly essential work for society, and they love doing what they do, but they all have some things in their lives that are much more essential to them as people. taking away their uniforms only reveals how these characters' lives are not solely defined by their jobs, which i cannot really say for the OG 911 characters.

It's made things actually feel like choices genuinely matter. true!! tk becoming a paramedic is a wonderful example, but also so many other things. how the strands moved from nyc to texas, how the other characters (except judd) also moved to texas, as one pivotal point of the show. owen explicitly chose these firefighters to form a new crew because they were successful in the job before coming to texas, telling us that (a) they were accomplished adults before the new "found family" was even established and (b) were still able to recreate that success as a newly formed team. that sounds like the kind of take on found family that i would want to see depicted in OG 911 as well, and it also immediately sets up a certain freedom for the characters to make permanent, life-changing decisions that are allowed to be for the better. much unlike OG 911, where everything that challenges or remodels the found family must always be Bad™. also the fact that these choices get made and actually change the course of a character's career or life is so important for my enjoyment. they get a chance to show that they support each other through these changes and that these changes do not have to negatively affect their friendships. THAT is how a healthy found family should work imo.

i cannot for the life of me recall a reason why buck and chim, hen and eddie, eddie and maddie etc would actually hang out if they weren't "connected" by work or some pre-existing family ties - OH THIS. I think with 911ls they make a thing of like hangouts and being silly and I also like how Judd is never there lmao. Judd has a wife and children and that again makes a lot of sense. He loves his team but they're not his family. He has strong friendships but he goes home to his wife. A lot of the crew are around the same age, and have similar interests and so that makes sense. With 911 they're not close in that sense, and we don't see them close in that sense despite being very involved in each other's personal life lol. They're all settled and content in some way or another and that makes characters like Buck stand out because he's not. And in comparison therefore: he's messy. He's poor little has no clue what he wants Buck in a way that feels like they're almost laughing at him lmao. So yeah that seems like a big difference between the shows/characters. Saying that though, I do think although 911ls show that they're more like friends, we see a lot less of the in-depth talks/chat 1:1 friendship stuff we have on 911 so it's all a mixed bag.

Obviously when you have a show with loads of cast members it's tricky to find some sort of difference to make them stand out, have them all shine and I think the show has got better at allocating sl's because the first 2 seasons were so Owen centric and he still manages to worm his way into sl's but at least there's an effort to have sl's completely separate from him.

this ask is interesting because personally, i dont think artem would go to vyn for mental health services (either a diagnosis, therapy, prescriptions, any of em). this is primarily because of what i mentioned in the analysis itself that like, artem sees vyn as a symbol somebody he wants to be but is failing to achieve.

being vulnerable in the face of that...i dont think artem would do that willingly. if it happened, some kind of outside circumstance would have to push him into that situation.

if that situation does happen, ur right, vyn will not take on the offensive because at his heart, hes a doctor and artem is somebody who is in pain. he will help in any way he can and later wonder if how he holds his own image (the image of perfection and control) had somehow, even tangentially, contributed to artem's distress

if vyn comes to the conclusion that yes, he did somehow contribute to this one way or another, itd be a wake up call for vyn irt how being "perfect" can make people around him look down upon themselves (this was discussed in this response as well irt to how mc feels inadequate sometimes with vyn)

on the flipside, even if theyre friends already and care about each other, i still dont think artem would go to vyn but for a different reason. because once artem cares about somebody, he wants to be seen by them as this almost impossible balance of Super Reliable but also Not Perfect but also Correct In Every Way but also I'm Just Some Guy. there goes artem once again with the contradictions that drive him nuts.

upswings and downswings can happen either because of a cause but it's more often in my experience that it happens for no reason. my psychiatrist explained it to me like "the circumstances are not changing but your brain has difficulty regulating mood aligned with it." this is hell for me. sometimes theres no cause, oftentimes my brain is irrational and unreasonable, and no matter how much i pick it apart, making it "make sense" doesnt solve the problem

because life isnt sposed to work like that in the first place. life isnt a set of problems and solutions and so much of it is chaotic and you cannot live your life as a case study or else you will suffer for it.

so, to me, artem is bipolar cuz 1) itd clash with his unhealthy system of looking at himself and his life for a long time and thus cause him pain but then as he grows he will learn to manage it while also adopting a healthier view of who he is and how he lives. and 2) i get to project onto fictional characters....as a treat :')
