#1: Digital Humanities: My Perspective and Involvement

For me, Digital Humanities is just as it sounds: humanities gone digital. As a student researcher during the summer of 2023, I was heavily involved in the process of learning the basics of qualitative research as I conducted a project in Composition Studies. Due to the extensive use of technology, programs, and other digitized resources, I would go as far as to say that the entire project would be a prime example of Digital Humanities. I had to complete my IRB application through a website which issued training videos I had to painstakingly watch for hours on end. Even after I had finished the application, I was doing research with primarily digitized sources through academic databases, creating online surveys so they were easily accessible to other students around the nation, using AI to transcribe the hours-long interviews I conducted over Zoom, creating PowerPoints and posters to present among my peers through projections, even dolling out compensation for my interviewees’ time through apps and online communication — everything about the project was conducted through digital resources, and probably would not have come to fruition without them.

There are some concerns that arise with this, particularly with the growth of AI use. Whether you’re completely for it, completely against it, or somewhere in the middle, AI is a strictly digital experience as of present. However, AI, when used in collaboration with one’s own ideas and advancements, can be incredibly beneficial to people overall because of its digital use. It can be a tool for those without ample physical resources in their area, much like how the true purpose of Digital Humanities pans out for me.

From my perspective, Digital Humanities is a fascinating phenomenon in the world right now. As we move forward with digital research, projects, and presentations, I believe that the Digital Humanities makes the humanities more accessible to wider audiences. Down to its core, the humanities should be more accessible to as many people as possible, not just academics or behind paywalls. While there are setbacks, the pros are immeasurably important to those growing in a digital world.

I’m incredibly excited to venture into the realm of Digital Humanities, especially that I’m now more aware of what it is, what it can encompass, and how I’ve already been apart of it. To know that the Digital Humanities has been rooted in linguistics makes me all the more excited to venture further into Digital Humanities as linguistics and languages are something I feel very passionate about and something I can definitely see myself going with Digital Humanities in the future.[2]

I've seen you post about having career goals related to linguistic anthropology and you've also posted that discrimination, especially linguistic discrimination, is one of the worst things about society your opinion. I was wondering if you had any ideas about how one could counter linguistic discrimination, either as part of a career or on the side. I'm especially interested in hearing your thoughts on how one might be able to do this outside of doing ling anth in academia.

Hi honey! I’m really honored to receive this question because it’s so insightful and dedicated to something I’m incredibly passionate about. It overlaps with sociology, law, and politics. So, first I’ll talk about what I’m personally planning to do outside of/past academia, and then I’ll talk about other avenues one can take, both on a large and small scale.

Right now, my goals are to be either a medical or legal interpreter, and I’m leaning toward the latter. What that means, for those that don’t know, is that I want to go through a graduate degree or certificate program in order to be certified to translate specific languages orally in a highly specialized workplace, namely a hospital or a courtroom.

The reason why I’m so passionate about this job is because, while we have laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (which prohibits discrimination based on “national origin,” which is closely tied to the native language you speak) we still see a lot of prejudice and violence against people who choose to speak their native/a different language on their own terms in public.

More specifically, what I aim to do is make it easier for non-native English speakers (especially, but not limited to, immigrants) receive the same services all people have a right to but they may have difficulty getting, such as medical attention or accurate legal representation. Interpretation is incredibly high stakes in my eyes because you have to translate automatically, in person, with a lot of pressure on you to do it quickly and accurately. And that’s really scary, but to me, what’s scarier is that someone might not be getting the care they need or be understood in a courtroom, and that could impact their health, their safety, their freedom, or their ability to get justice.

While someone might not necessarily be actively sabotaged in a courtroom or a hospital, those are high profile environments with a lot of pressure, and not a lot of time for patience and forgiveness if you’re trying to get through a case or to the next patient. The odds are stacked against someone who doesn’t have the specific vocabulary needed to accurately describe their symptoms or deliver their testimony.

And that’s not even counting the ingrained and/or active biases that are found on a serious level in the United States healthcare and justice systems. One of the reasons I’m leaning toward legal interpretation is because I would love to be employed by an organization that protects immigrants from being exploited or abused by our current administration. And that’s so much easier to do when you have bilingual representation to fight with you for your rights.

So, that’s a little background on what I’m specifically studying and fighting for. Here are just a few quick bullets that I always tell people when talking about linguistic discrimination and our role in it.

On a large scale, you can:

Go into a career like mine (law, interpretation, translation, etc) that focuses on combating it.

Support political campaigns and anti-discrimination bill campaigns by volunteering your time to organizations like the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) and RAICES (Refugee And Immigrant Center for Education and legal Services)

Attend conferences, meetings, workshops, and rallies that center around this topic and intersecting ones that you may be interested in.

Volunteer your time to places like housing projects. This is something that I’m on an email/calling list to do. Specifically for me, it’s the Boston Housing Authority, and their volunteers send in a resume, state which languages they have high proficiency in (mine is currently only Spanish) and then attend a training to understand how to do it accurately and with cultural sensitivity. It’s great practice if you need to polish your language skills, are planning to go into a career like mine, or want to use highly-specialized vocabulary. I’ve had to pick up a lot of words that have to do with landlords, rent, housing laws, etc. A lot of the people serviced by the BHA are immigrants or non-native speakers and struggle with things such as reading official letters or making appointments with native English speakers. When they struggle to do this, they’re more likely to get taken advantage of by landlords, evicted unfairly, or mistreated.

Support (through volunteering, donating, etc) indigenous or indigenous-helping groups that combat issues ranging from seizure of land in the Amazon to indigenous groups working on their terms to preserve/revitalize their language(s). It’s really easy for indigenous voices to

Call out linguistic discrimination that you see, such as people denying individuals service based on hearing them speak in another language, or unnecessarily bothering them in public. Whenever possible, take video of the incident.

Have polite and informed discussions with people who want to know more about it or might not understand why it’s a problem. This is particularly important to have with kids, and while I was volunteering/teaching Hebrew I made sure that it was integrated into the lessons.

Remain informed on cases involving linguistic discrimination.

Call your representatives when cases come up concerning linguistic discrimination or immigration policy.

Vote for representatives who believe in acceptance and equality for people who come from different backgrounds/languages.

Boycott/denounce companies and organizations that improperly handle workplace/customer discrimination or instigate it themselves.

Follow native speakers, particularly indigenous individuals and/or minority language speakers, as well as linguistic/social activists and journalists/academics, on your social media feeds (my preferred one to check is Twitter) for updates and opinions on issues that may help you get more informed outside of a classroom/professorial setting.

Be aware of the kinds of resources you should reach out to (administration, superiors, HR, etc) should you find yourself experiencing or watching someone experience linguistic discrimination.

Disclaimer: before stepping into any confrontations, make sure you assess the danger of the situation (this where it’s really good to go to trainings to learn how to handle these kinds of situations). Your goal is to always de-escalate and make the person being discriminated against safer, as well as of course keeping yourself safe too. If there’s violence or anyone is in immediate danger, call the authorities and document whatever you can safely. I’ve only ever seen people being verbally abused for their use of their language(s), but it’s a scary world out there right now.

Overall, it’s really important to remember that this kind of discrimination does not exist in a vacuum and almost always has ties/roots in other forms of discrimination and racism. While it may seem like you’re only doing something small by stepping into and diffusing confrontation/condemning discrimination, you’re having a ripple effect that lets people who linguistically discriminate know that they should be ashamed of their words/actions.

ALSO, friendly reminder that people who discriminate/harass someone for speaking in another language, having an accent, etc, are not entitled to be put up with due to free speech. That isn’t what it means.

[06.08.17] ohayō gozaimasu, from tokyo! i’ve been waiting for some time to write my first post from japan, simply because this country is so much to take in. today marks my fourth day in tokyo – four of six total days that i plan to stay here – and i just adore this place.

culture shock isn’t new to me – i have had the privilege of traveling throughout my life to some incredible places – but this country is something totally new to me. there are a lot of rules and ways of living that, understandably, i am very much unaccustomed to.

first and foremost, i sort of screwed up on the tattoo front. people give me strange looks. aghast looks. concerned looks. i guess that i am straight up banned from all public pools and gyms. being the tourist i am, i was pretty excited to see what the japanese hot springs were like. yeah, fat chance. two different baths i visited had huge signs deterring anyone with ‘excessive’ ink from going in. i definitely should have done my research on that front, beforehand. that being said, all things shibuya-related seem to be tattoo friendly, but i’ll get to that later in the post.

second, i feel like the epitome of a stupid, ignorant american. a minnesota friend asked me on whatsapp the other day what my ‘low’ so far was, and i told her about how, when i entered a charbucks to steal their internet for this blog, i apparently swung my drybag across someone’s table and destroyed their school notes with their iced latte. not the first time i’ve spilled an ice latte on someone (#laprima) but i guess i had no idea i even did it this time. i sat down, got to work, and was approached a full fifteen minutes after my drink-slaying by the victim. he asked me if i was unaware of what i had done, or if i knew and was passive aggressively ignoring him. needless to say, i was duly embarrassed - especially when he told me to try to be much more careful. i apologized profusely and proceeded to flee the hell out of there. imagine the inner-turmoil that poor guy probably faced in those fifteen minutes.

moments like those are unforgiving. i keep tripping over the stupid speed humps in the middle of the street. there are like three different subway systems and i keep buying the wrong tickets for the wrong network of lines. i don’t know what to look at on the subway when we’re all packed like sardines and i feel all the eyes on me and my sleeve of ink. maybe they’re counting the number of bobby pins in my hair?

thankfully, there IS an app for my blackberry that teaches preliminary japanese. that has proven quite helpful to distinguish basic salutations, iced and hot coffee preferences, and some other things. aside from that, however, i’m a blind, stupid, white american.

just the other night, for example, i went to the shibuya crossing - a huge, four-way intersection akin to times square in new york city. after an insanely fun night of bar-hopping and exploring the area, i naturally had the munchies. ‘no problem,’ i told myself, after seeing a close by mcdonalds. ‘i’ve got an app for this.’

well, i’ll spare you the long story, but in the end, i accidentally ordered 3 big macs. three. big. macs. i guess that when i said ‘three,’ trying to confirm that the big mac was at around 300 yen, i ordered three, huge, big macs. i wish i could play it off cool, but i know that all eyes were on the slightly tipsy, visually exhausted and beardy faced american with short shorts and a tray with three big macs.

in addition to the whole language struggle, i’m having to rework the order of operations involved with everyday and common tasks. for example, the first time i entered a traditional ramen venue, i was met with continuous banter and excited arm movements urging me to go back outside (or so i thought). so i went outside. then the chef went outside and motioned for me to go in. so i went in. at this point, all customer eyes were on me, of course. well, it turns out, you’re always supposed to order your food from this atm-esque machine, get a ticket stub, and hand the stub to the chef or waiter.

this sense of automation is ubiquitous across tokyo. everything seems to be like an atm dispensary. cigarettes, tampons, ice cream, coffee, beer, ticket machines... what have you. that’s cool and all, but it just takes a lot to get used to it.

all of that aside, tokyo is gorgeous, and its people are wonderful. generally, people are very nice. i’ve learned to bow at least as low as the person who has bowed towards me during a salutation. everyone rides bicycles, and noone - i mean, noone - locks them. the bicycles are shaped pretty weird. think of a west coast customs styled, elongated chopper. but with tiny wheels, and baby seats on the handlebars and behind the rider’s seat. mothers ride these things like absolute bosses, carrying their toddlers around, weaving in and out of traffic. i love that. and generally, the age spectrum of riders is very, very wide. 70-85 year old women and men ride these things without worry. oh, and noone wears helmets - not even the police officers or firemen (they ride bicycles, too) - but i did witness, strangely enough, the ambulance drivers wearing badass, full-faced helmets.

i also quite enjoy the quirkiness of this city. i haven’t been able to ascertain whether it’s a city culture or national identity, but it’s certainly interesting. everything involves cute drawings. cats are everywhere. i can definitely see the influence of manga and anime on even everyday advertisements, instructionals, and precautionary street signs.

random moments of strange architecture keep things upbeat. in between two seemingly brutalist buildings, for example, will be hidden a cute, traditional style homed, but with rounded off windows - because why not? i quite enjoy this. it makes wandering the city a lot more fun.

7-elevens are also a quirky haven for me. everything is dirt cheap and i can always grab a mysterious lunch, whose meats i can’t identify, for less than 3-4 dollars. they also accept credit cards, which is a growing rarity in japan as i’ve come to realize.

from an urbanist’s perspective, tokyo is quite interesting. each hub of the city is centered around the subway stations. around these epicenters, there is a lot of commotion (something i’ve tried to capture in the photographs), both vehicular and pedestrian. a lot of noise and advertisements. but just take a walk, two or three blocks away from this node in any direction, and you quickly meet the quiet, slow life. people actually walk slower than i do, which is incredible, because i’m lazy. i quite enjoy this polarity between paces - fast and slow - all within an approachable distance. it makes for eclectic experiences which are all close to home.

color is an interesting thing to address, but i haven’t been able to quite yet wrap my head around it. at first, tokyo seems to be vibrant in bright colors, but upon closer inspection, these colors come not from infrastructure or architecture, but rather advertisements. advertisements, as the photographs likely will show, are everywhere. they smother everything. and any other natural color (by natural, i mean to reference color that spawns from anything that doesn’t try to incite shopping) comes from landscaping elements. you’d think that this would evoke something ugly, but strangely, it’s fun and quite pretty. perhaps it’s because i can’t read anything that i am comfortable with it. i’d likely be far more overwhelmed with all my surroundings if i could identify certain advertisements and their meanings - but in general, everything is washed into one, multicolored landscape. it is, certainly overwhelming at times.

tomorrow i’ll be visiting a couple of museums and doing the whole touristy thing, but for the most part, i’ve been trying to blend into everyday civilian life. i’ve been walking my butt off for kilometers on end through the city, and have tried to avoid the rail system as much as possible. i seem to be more interested in the outskirts of tokyo (which don’t really exist, since the city is so large). so, i guess i like the interstitial zones, the back alleys, and the little markets i seem to run upon.

i’ve made a friend at the tiny hostel i’m staying at - she’s from australia, and she thankfully speaks a decent amount of japanese. other than conversation and having a good time, she has definitely proven to be an asset whenever we have gone out and i don’t know what i’m doing. it was with her that i survived the bar-hopping in shibuya and met some other people. i hope to meet several more people along the way. there’s something quite empathetic with meeting a fellow traveler. you don’t have any inhibitions or barriers, because whether you like to admit it or not, you’re both lost as hell.

tonight i’ll be meeting up with some carnegie mellon kids who are also in tokyo, so it’ll be good to see some familiar faces. i’m pretty excited to go stalk sou fujimoto’s house NA later in the afternoon, and i think that it’ll definitely be a highlight of tokyo. i just have to wrap up some loose ends before i start traveling down south to yokohama!

Police brutality has gone from a niche concern – one most white people considered impolite to bring up at dinner parties – to a compulsory national conversation. It’s long overdue, which has left many playing catch-up, especially white folks and popular media. As David Dennis Jr. pointed out in his excellent Twitter thread (seriously, go read it!) superhero shows have an especially tall order, given that they rely on portraying lawlessness and a fictionalized criminality that the hero can then clamp down on. But that image is out of touch with reality and can send damaging messages.

We’ve long discussed this problematic aspect of the genre in our reviews and features, whether it’s Barry Allen’s personal private prison kept in the basement of STAR Labs or Oliver Queen’s incredibly short-lived interest in reforming the prison industrial complex…before he went right back to adding more people to it. But Batwoman has taken a different tack that other comic book shows could learn from.

Batwoman has, to greater and lesser degrees, explored gentrification, corruption of police and the legal system, police brutality/the lawlessness of privatized law enforcement, and the wrongful conviction of a Black man. The show is not perfect, and it must be stated that no other show is doing quite what HBO’s Watchmen did in terms of exploring this country’s legacy of race, anti-Black violence, and policing. But Batwoman is a superhero show that spent the last year actively engaging with questions like “was that an appropriate use of force?” and “isn’t this a gross violation of the civil rights of the people of Gotham City?”

In the Gotham of Batwoman, a private security firm called The Crows operates with near-impunity within the city, keeping the incredibly well-heeled secure while everyone else hopes for the best. Gated community is an understatement, and frankly, the firm is closer to a mercenary paramilitary operation.

By the end of the season, The Crows have expanded their reach through an app that’s available to all Gothamites, even those who aren’t clients, so anyone can call in the mercenaries if they see big bad Alice and her brother Mouse, or Batwoman, whom Crows head honcho Jake Kane views as equally villainous. It’s easy to imagine the Crows’ app going the way of SketchFactor in DC and other IRL safety apps, which quickly turned into racial and socioeconomic maps, with white and upper class folks flagging anything that made them uncomfortable – namely, Black neighborhoods.

For example, the season finale deconstructed the media and law enforcement trope of the giant invincible Black man, using the show’s own gossip host (voiced with juicy irony by longtime Batwoman comic fan Rachel Maddow) to introduce a suspect with barely-coded language. The show goes on to deconstruct that narrative, introducing the audience to his brother, who worries about his sibling who was nothing like the man described on TV. Gotham’s professional football league used him for entertainment and several people in positions of power abused their privilege to do serious harm, in this case irreparable CTE that turned a gentle man into someone who literally couldn’t feel pain, yet another harmful stereotype of Black folks that has caused harm from slavery to the medical field.

Gotham’s actual police force is so incompetent as to be a non-factor. They only come up in maybe a handful of episodes, but they feature prominently in one of the season’s best arcs: the wrongful conviction for Lucius Fox’s murder. His father’s murder was a defining moment in Luke Fox’s life.

Normally the calm, logical, emotionally removed man behind the comms and tech on Team Bat, we watched Luke put together the pieces and realize that a fellow Black man had been set up to take the fall for his father’s death and then pursue the real killer. This wasn’t a clunky after school special one-and-done story so the creators can check a box. While there’s a lot we don’t know about Batwoman season 2, namely the LGBTQ actor who will play the new lead and how they will be written in to pick up the threads from last season, I hope Batwoman will continue working with “villains” who are more complicated than we’re used to seeing on shows with tights.

I also hope they’re able to portray more of the income inequality that showrunner Caroline Dries discussed in an interview with Den of Geek earlier this season. “One thing we had in Gotham City is this idea of the ‘us-versus-them’ in the districts where people are protected and then other districts where they’re left to their own devices because they can’t afford private security.”

Dries told us that, unfortunately, this wasn’t as emphasized as she would have liked, due to the limitations as production.

“In a perfect world, you’d have a bird’s eye view of the city and you would actually be able to see districts,” Dries said. There were some references to this earlier in the season with checkpoints between neighborhoods, but as the season went on, Dries said those little bridge scenes were the first to get cut due to time and money. Fortunately, it sounds like it will still be part of season 2, and likely more pronounced.

“If I had all the time in the world and all the money in the world, I would have been able to dramatize that disparity better and the segregation a little bit better, visually,” Dries said. “But we’re going to continue to keep that alive, especially now as we’ve seen the Crows sort of becoming more heightened in their power and becoming more authoritarian and scarier.”

As television reorients itself around a long overdue reprioritization of Black lives, the landscape will shift, in some cases dramatically, as with the cancellation of long-running show Cops. But for other shows, like Batwoman, there’s an opportunity to continue pushing even further forward on the very social issues that once caused trolls to review-bomb the show with so much online hate. Heading into season 2, as the social and cultural landscape shifts, Batwoman should continue Kate Kane’s legacy of fighting injustice intersectionally, centering the marginalized while upending comic book tropes about law and order.

As we have come upon our year and a half anniversary of moving to Paris, we have noticed many comparisons from living in Los Angeles versus Paris. I’d like to share the ones that I find challenging and downright ridiculous.

The biggest one is life without a car. In LA, we spent so much time in our cars and that it created an insulated feeling. In my twenty plus years of driving in LA, I’ve rarely had to deal with public transportation. Things like worrying about being pickpocketed, or having a man stand too close to me weren’t an issue. If it’s hot or cold outside, there’s air conditioning or a heater to keep you comfy. Life in Paris means you have to be prepared for the weather and many times that means dealing with a hot, crowded bus or giving up all personal space. One the flip side, I do love that our family spends more time together going for walks, or renting scooters for the weekend to explore new neighborhoods (and mostly Invader hunt).

It has been freeing to not spend so much time stuck in miserable traffic.

These new Jump bikes by Uber just appears on the streets and we love them. The bikes are electric so you coast along. The two issues with them is you have to use the Uber app to rent them and I am the only one with an account so I can only rent one bike at a time. They are also more expensive than renting a scooter so we don’t use them often.

Spending a day riding a bike would be tortue in Los Angeles because of barking dogs, very few bike lanes and brutal hills. In LA, many people would have dogs as guards so you can’t walk down the street without getting barked at. Since people don’t have yards here, dogs are kept as pets and are trained so well that they don’t need leashes. I was amazed at how you don’t hear incessant barking here.

It feels like French people have a better quality of life because they go outside more. They are used to sharing their space because people don’t have their own private backyards so they go to public parks. The French are more inclined to help someone because it’s the right thing to do, rather than just being a bystander.

That being said, there are rude, overly aggressive drivers and motorcycle riders that make it dangerous to walk on the streets at times. Jaywalking is law here, you never wait for the light to change and most times when cars are stuck in traffic and they are blocking the crosswalk, after the light changes, they still drive against a red light even if you are walking. Then they shout at you and throw their hands up in frustration as if walking on the green light is somehow the wrong thing to do. It’s annoying as hell.

A majority of Parisians live in apartments so the lovely old buildings all share garbage bins. Our building has about 12 units (2 on each floor) so that’s a ton of garbage. But the trash is collected everyday except Sunday. There are two trucks that come by for regular trash and glass bottles. It was hard to get used to the daily traffic jam on our tiny one-way street as the trash truck slowly collects all the bins at 5pm. It’s incredible to me that a building with 12 apartments have as many bins as we had for our small house in LA!

Which leads me to one of the biggest annoyances about living abroad. We rented our apartment from an English speaking rental agency. Along with two months deposit we paid a hefty 6% agency fee. The apartment manager, who handles repairs, apartment issues and acts as a liason to the person that owns our apartment, is absolutely savage. She speaks English but for some reason only communicates by email in French. We have been waiting to have our interphone (the phone that allows you to buzz people into the building) repaired since May 2018!!

Little did I know (I admit, I was too enamored with renting a dreamy apartment in the perfect location in Paris) that I didn’t think to ask about the building itself. We don’t have a gardienne which is someone who lives and works in the building to take care of the upkeep and renter matters (collect deliveries, deal with broken things outside of the apartment, helps you if you get locked out)

We moved in without any info on what to do when a package is delivered, so I learned the hard way by going to three different post offices looking for my package that most deliveries in Paris are dropped off at a nearby shop that have a sticker on the door that says Chronopost. For our first year here, this shop was in front of our building and even though they were terribly disorganized, we got to know the shop owners and it wasn’t too difficult to find our packages. Then suddenly the shop closed and a new business moved in that didn’t accept Chronopost packages. I asked our kind neighbor where to pick up deliveries but he didn’t know. Most times, I get an email or text with an address of where to pick up my package. It’s usually in walking distance but sometimes it’s a long bus ride away. Not so convenient for me and it would be wonderful to have someone in the building that can accept our packages. I should add, we pay a monthly building fee to cover the trash, water and elevator costs, yet when our building’s front door was broken, we were locked out for ages with no one to contact to let us in. The door was repaired and everyone got a new key but I paid for an extra key and I’ve been waiting for about three months and still no new key. There was also a time when the building was having work done to the exterior and the electricity was out in the stairwell. It was pitch dark and it was the first time I felt scared in the building. I wish I could go back in time and had the girls who checked us in the rental explain the building procedures, who to call in an emergency, what the trash policy was (we didn’t know which bin was for recycling) and how to handle deliveries. It’s all very figure it out yourself here but God help you if you make a mistake! If I had the legal right to work here, I would be the concierge of our building since I’ve home most of the day (would love a discount on our rent) but the language barrier would be too difficult.

French people I have encountered are either extremely kind and helpful or short and rude. That is my personal experience, not making a generalization. For example, we were at the parc de la Villette which is a huge park along the canals which have cute boat rentals. We saw a kiosk of park employees so we asked them where can we rent the boats. Her response (and keep in mind, Liv asked in French) “Over there” while vaguely pointing to the empty canal sidewalk with nothing there. I asked Liv to ask her to clarify where she meant. She merely repeated herself. So we walked over to the only thing she could have meant which was a sign post on the empty canal path.

We figured if we waited there maybe a boat would come along and we could inquire about renting it, yet all the boats were on the north side of the bridge and we were waiting on the southside with no boats in sight. After waiting for 15 minutes we gave up. I also remember during a flight to Amsterdam on Air France, we left the gate late so I was concerned about making our connecting flight to Tokyo which was a fast 40 minute window. Since we were already late, I asked the flight attendant when would we be arriving? He looked me dead in the eye and said “The usual time!” and walked off in a huff. We ended up having to sprint through the airport and beg to cut the line in security to make our net flight. This is the French way, employees do not make it a habit to provide customer service of any kind. It’s so frustrating because of course we Americans are used to “the customer is always right” attitude but I am well aware, this is not America and I need to adapt not the other way around. I just try to be patient and not lose my temper. Olivia is a Godsend because once people hear how good her French is, they quickly change their tune and usually are more inclined to help. It sadly hasn’t been the case with our apartment manager.

I crack my Mom and bff, Aimee up with my horror stories of how I get treated by people here. The joke here is you can’t ask for help but God help you if you don’t know the rules. I try to take it in good humor but there are times (remember the La Redoute mattress fiasco?) when I don’t think I can stand another minute of the abuse and I lose my shit.

This was the car I rented this summer when we hosted our friends from Finland. I asked for a car to seat six and this is what they had. However, they sent me to the basement to pick up this beast and as you can see I wasn’t fitting in the doors. Luckily I was able to ask a guy washing cars to pull it out for me but it’s things like this that drive me crazy. In LA, whenever I rented a car the people at the rental agency would bring the car out to me. Spoiled I suppose. The guy at the rental place also called me to pick up the car early which I gladly obliged. Then as I was checking out he tried to add an extra day charge on the car because I was returning it after 3pm. I tried to explain calmly, that he asked me to come pick the car up early but I still needed to return it at the time I requested. What kind of logic is that?!

Yet, the coin always has another side. There are so many delightful advantages to living in France. Things I never really appreciated in LA, like the architecture. I know everyone thinks California is so beautiful and it is, but it has thousands of beige, stucco strip malls full of tacky signage and billboards on every corner. I liken LA to the internet, you really appreciate websites without annoying ads plastered all over the page (yep, WordPress has ads all over my blog now 😦 ) so when you find a clean, advertisement-free place it’s so pleasant.

It’s still my favorite thing just walking around and looking at the (non-neon) signage of Paris.

The French are well known for their amazing cheese, wine and universal health-care. Yet our latest experience has me scratching my head. Now keep in mind, we are American citizens with the good fortune to live here on a long stay tourist visa, so we pay for our own health insurance policy from America. Which means we pay out of pocket and can submit a claim with our insurance (but with the large deductible, we don’t) so obviously it’s not as expensive as we would pay in LA but we took Liv to the doctor for her annual check up and wanted to make sure all her vaccinations were up to date before school started. Since we went sure of what the French school system required, we asked the doctor for an update. He spoke French and had a medical student with him during the exam. They did the basics, checked her heartbeat, measured her height and weight. We asked about an issue she had with her ear but he needed more info from her pediatrician in LA so I had to email him later. He told us, she was up to date on her shots until she was about 12 years old and that was it. €75 to listen to her heart and tell us she’s tall and healthy. I was pretty stunned that we were charged that much for nothing. Well, hopefully next year we will be able to apply for French healthcare so we shouldn’t have to pay so much in the future. Thank goodness we don’t get sick often (knocks on wood)!

Funny story, last week we were coming from an appointment with our immigration lawyer and Liv and I took a scooter home. We were ahead of Antz who happened to notice a woman on the street looking at us with recognition. He knew she looked familiar so he asked her if she knew us. Turns it she was Liv’s second grade teacher from her French school in LA! She moved back to Paris and was teaching and she saw us riding by on our scooter. Antz texted me to come back and we took this photo. She was impressed by Liv’s French and so excited that we were living our dream in Paris.

And lastly, I get it guys, I count my blessings everyday I am here. It is a dream come true. Please don’t think I have some entitled, bratty, close-minded attitude when it comes to living abroad.
