Pokemon Legendary Themes Ranked

I saw a video of a youtuber I like doing this tier list so I thought I’d get my own opinions in first so I’m not biased by theirs. This list is a little incomplete- there’s a few things I know are missing, most pointedly side game stuff, but I suppose they can’t win em all. Thus, here are my objectively factual opinions, no nostalgia bias here surely. Here’s a link to the list in case you want to do the same.

(Tiers are sorted in increasing quality right to left)

D Tier

Mewtwo (FRLG): Y’all know Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres also use this, right? It’s just a marginally more dramatic version of the regular wilds music, so it gets the fail from me.

Mew (Emerald): This is the same as the last one! Except it gets the edge because it is slightly higher pitched, and because it’s in a game where it’s not a remix of a song you’ve just heard dozens of times.

Mewtwo (XY): I just really dislike the soundfont XY uses for most of its themes. This sounds like a shitty youtube remix from the late 00s with like 300 views, and most of them are the same person who really likes the song for some reason. Am I just biased against the kanto wilds theme? Maybe.

Regis (Crown Tundra): Narrowly dodges being the worst Regis theme since the Platinum one exists (It’s not on this list though). I think a lot of the more recent versions of older themes suffer since they were designed with the lesser hardware in mind. It is a shame because I do really like some of the additions to the theme.

C Tier

Dynamax Legend (Crown Tundra): Mewtwo is already back for his last appearance on the list. It’s just a remix of the max raid theme, which I don’t really care for- especially after hearing it over and over and over again grinding Lairs for shinies.

Calyrex (Crown Tundra): This song being dramatic makes no sense in universe- the player knows this is the big legendary, but the character sure doesn’t- but it ultimately feels hollow. This is deliberate, since it’s actually just one half of another song.

Steeds (Crown Tundra): h o n s e theme is the other half of that song, and it’s the better half, but its still incomplete.

Aura Trio (X/Y) and Solgaleo/Lunala (S/M): These two get lumped together because I always get them conflated, which signifies to me that neither has made a strong impact. Listening to both again, I think I like the latter more, but it’s narrow.

Regis (ORAS): It’s just not the same without the horns. My gen 6 bias is showing, but I don’t really like the soundfont.

Deoxys (ORAS): similar to the Regis, this is held back by the soundfont (why the fuck is there an organ in this??) but also by the fact that at this point, the Deoxys theme just isn’t special anymore. And that’s kinda sad.

Calyrex 2 (Crown Tundra): The full version of this theme is much better, obviously, sounding suitably regal for the king of the tundra, but it overall lands at a meh. The percussion sounds like it’s trying to rip off the Weather Trio’s, which is a big no-no.

B Tier

Eternatus 1 (SwSh): We are now entering the songs I like zone. Eternatus 1 goes in a lot of different directions, and despite how 13-year-old me would balk at it I actually enjoy the dubsteppy bits of it. Sorry to disappoint you, you edgy fuck.

Ultra Beasts (SMUSUM): I don’t know why these are separated, they’re the same theme. I really like the UB theme, but the thing is it isn’t really a legendary theme- it had to be a bit less bombastic seeing as you can just encounter a bunch of these bad bois. And while it sounds suitably alien, I still think it doesn’t belong on this list.

Weather Trio (ORAS): Why is this listed as this, its just for Rayquaza. Extremely dramatic, but a retread of one of my S-tier picks (spoilers oops) and not different enough for the remaster to make it worth it.

Primals (ORAS): the same as the previous, but I do like this much better, what with the song “reverting” to the original every so often. This should probably be higher, but I don’t want to separate it from the “full” version.

Eternatus 2: It’s kind of a shame how little time you get to hear this, because it’s a big ol “you’re fucked” and that’s pretty great. There are bits of this that sound like they’re sampling Kirby Super Star, and I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Galar Birds (Crown Tundra): While I know everyone used to adore this one, I think the honeymoon phase is over for me at this point. I still like it, but at the end of the day it’s still a Kanto Wild remix.

Legendary (BWB2W2): This is really good! The way the tempo shifts around the song is a really nice touch, and that build section is excellent. Just a solid overall theme.

Tao Trio (BW): Reshiram and Zekrom’s themes are slightly different, but even Game Freak forgot that one. Kyurem’s is the same but where they have different SFX it just has dead air, which while fitting is a bit less good. I adore the beat this one has running, almost a throbbing bit going on there.  Edit: Ok on relisten I’ve heard Kyurem’s a bit closer, and it’s a little different with some record skips, but they’re pretty unecessary imo.

Zacian/Zamazenta (SwSh): This is one I kinda wish was less dramatic, considering it’s not as oh shit as the situations their other themes have. I kinda hate the opening to this, but the rest of it makes up for it I suppose.

Eternatus 3: Yeah this is a Z/Z theme not an Eternatus theme let’s be real. A suitably triumphant third act to the climax of SwSh’s (lackluster) story. This is kinda just a banger, very much appropriate for the beatdown it accompanies.

Dialga/Palkia (DPPt): Closing the tier with a song that I actually love, but it’s occurred to me that it’s a little odd sitting next to some of these other ones. I mean, it’s mostly built around this very pretty little piano line, which makes it feel less weighty than the competition. It’s a classic, and hasn’t aged poorly or anything, but it’s less of a climax than I would expect. With that in mind, I shudder to think of what would happen to this in a potential remake.

 A Tier

Mysterious Being (SwSh): This is getting carried here by that bass alone. The rest of it is ok I guess.

Arceus (DPPt): Ah, the track no one ever got to hear. I really love how sparse this is, being basically only percussion most of the way through. I think the Arceus event is something we should have actually gotten to experience, I’m pretty sure it would have blown little me’s mind.

Lugia (HGSS): HGSS, the games where every legendary got its own theme. Bring this back please, I’m begging here. I understand the reason this sounds the way it does is because it’s based on the Shadow Lugia theme from XD, but I haven’t played that one, so I can’t comment. I’m sure not complaining, though- considering Lugia’s other main appearance (in the movie, of course) I wasn’t expecting such a menacing theme.

Legendary (DPPt): For a “generic” theme (fucking Rotom gets this btw) this has a lot going for it. The animation that plays when you start a fight with this music is burned into my brain. It’s fast, it’s tense, and it sounds great.

Lake Trio (DPPt): Unlike Mysterious Being, while the bass slays here, it’s not alone carrying the song. This track was always my favourite out of Diamond and Pearl, and those games have a fucking great soundtrack, so.

Black/White Kyurem (B2W2): I really love that this is a remix of the (also very menacing) theme you hear when you boot the game up- you’ve heard a version of this while staring at the fucker, now here’s the real version for when you have to fight it. The references to the regular Tao Trio theme are well placed, but this more bombastic version sounds like Kyurem is here to fucking kill you, which to be fair, it kinda is.

Legendary Beasts (Crystal/HGSS): I’m lumping these together since, although HGSS gave each their own remix, they’re basically the same theme. This was the first Legendary music ever written for the series, and it still holds up really well. As for the HGSS remixes, I don’t think Entei’s slower rockier version works as well, but I really like the punchy percussion on Raikou’s version.

Regis (RSE): Hella bass and Hoenn Horns? What’s not to love? I do think the original version of this theme is by far the best one, being an ample payoff for the puzzle that was getting to it in the first place, and it makes hurling balls at the golem’s much more tolerable. I literally never caught Registeel as a kid so I could go back and listen to this whenever I wanted.

Tapus (SMUSUM): Again, why are these separated. Considering this game has literal aliens in it, the Tapu theme in SM is somehow the most messed up sounding one, but it works extremely well. The surprise vocalisations work really well with the… I’m hesitant to say tribal, but I don’t have another word for that vibe to be honest. It does feel like you’re doing a transgression with this song, which you are (why the fuck are you allowed to catch these things in universe lmao).

Ultra Necrozma (USUM): Probably the most climactic song in the entire franchise, and it makes sense- this isn’t just the climax of those games, but the finisher to the entire 3DS era of the series. The church organs, therefore, are pretty justified. This song sounds like a Big Deal, and the organ getting pretty jazzy when it gets to some of the less intense bits is a really nice little touch. And then the percussion picks up again and oh fuck here we goooooo. A fitting track for arguably one of the hardest fights in the entire franchise.

 S Tier

Dusk Mane/Dawn Wings Necrozma (USUM): Haha oops I like this one more than Ultra. I think it’s just the unstoppable percussion that opens this that does it. I don’t think anyone who went in blind saw this moment in the games coming, and the intensity reflects this- its like a prelude to Ultra but it doesn’t have as much of a low point, with the onslaught of noise fitting the sheer OH FUCK that is seeing everyone’s favourite bag-dodger getting bodyjacked out of nowhere.

Weather Trio (RSE): Anyone who understands my bias is gonna understand this one. It’s almost entirely carried by nostalgia, but I just love this fucking song. Compared to some of the other things on this list, it feels nearly minimalistic, seeing as it’s pretty much just the drums, horns, and that bell, but that’s all it needs. It’s the first song in the series for a proper legendary, and it suits that fact.

Deoxys (FRLG/E): By contrast, the Deoxys theme is pushing that GBA soundfont to its absolute limit. You can hear some of the best of both the FRLG and RSE soundtracks in this song, with the Kanto percussion and the Hoenn horns both doing their part, but whatever instruments the rest of this is going for are absolutely not slouching either. It’s somewhat telling that the best soundtracks for FRLG romhacks (e.g. Clover) sound more like this than like the other themes in the game.

Ho-Oh (HGSS): Oh fuck is that a koto I love kotos. By contrast with Lugia, Ho-oh is a more relaxed track that takes a lot from traditional Japanese instruments, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t dramatic- far from it. The groove in this makes it sound like it comes from another series entirely, being so incredibly different from anything else the series had to offer at that point. That main riff is so fucking perfect, man.

Giratina (Platinum): I remember having my mind blown when I first heard this. Giratina went from the generic DP legendary music (which is obviously still good) to this chaotic energetic power play, and I was sold on Platinum immediately (like everything before XY, Platinum came out in Japan some months before in other countries, so I heard this well before the game dropped). This song has so many different lines, so many different builds, and yet none of them feel out of place. I almost feel like this song is what started me down the path that would lead to me being a prog fan. After the haunting ambience of the Distortion World, this sheer energy is such a shock to the system, and the climax of the song hits harder than any individual moment on any other song in the series. It’s my number 1 pick, and I love it to bits.

My thoughts on the Freelancers Anonymous movie ✨ It’s kind of long and spoilery so it’s under a read more.

Intro.

Overall I’ve got mixed reviews about it.  Particularly with the characters and the comedy.  I’m particularly picky about comedy because I don’t laugh at things easily so while the audience laughed at some things, I remained silent.  I hate when things are advertised as “comedy” and it wasn’t funny (obviously in my opinion since comedy can be subjective) *cough cough Almost Adults* but it did manage to make me laugh and it was light hearted and fun.  Its best quality is that it’s very female forward/empowering (there’s also only 1 guy in the cast and he never talks).  The app is actually a very a good idea and I’m glad it’s going to become a reality.  What a great way to advertise a product; turn it into a movie 😂 Honestly, I’d actually bare to rewatch it again and laugh at somethings again 👌OK AND OBVIOUSLY NATASHA WAS A STAR 💖

Gayle

First topic, Natasha as Gayle because I love talking about her.  Her character was cute, very genuine, but of all the characters I felt that Gayle was very “vague.”  Sure she was quirky and determined but of all the characters, she felt the least fleshed out.  Everyone had qualities that stood out and had grown throughout the movie but Gayle was just there, being her cute quirky determined self (she did stand up for herself when her mom was questioning her life though which is relatable).  Which actually made her feel very real but surrounded by a bunch of comical characters, it felt kind of off for her to be there.  She can kind of come off whiny (maybe it’s the way Natasha does her voice for Gayle) which kind of made me cringe or meh, but yet I’m still attracted to it LMAO But this is all my opinion of course, maybe I’m just picky.  

Whoever put Gayle in thigh highs and a garter belt, I hope they have a beautiful life.  As for the rest of her outfits, they were a hit or miss.  Sometimes, Gayle looked older, sometimes she looked young.  Gayle’s casual outfits at home were honestly some of her best looks.  Also Gayle in a wedding dress 💖

Gayle was a woman of many talents; she was an online cabaret singer, read erotic novels, and angrily tap dances (that was fucking amazing to watch 😂).  How Natasha managed to pull all that off is worth praising d:  Especially the tap dancing.  Because of how quirky Gayle was, these all come off as comedic but I honestly believe Gayle was making bank on these weird ass jobs with the way Natasha portrayed her XD  Gayle’s moans were TOP NOTCH and my ears and other regions tingled.  Sign me the fuck up for those hetero ass erotic audiobooks.  Anyways... in a way, the movie was also praising the arts as a viable choice of career.

Other than her rift with her fiancee, Gayle’s conflict was with her mom who wanted her to find a “real” job.  I thought all that was very relatable and was handled and resolved very well.  A little rushed but it fit in with the plot so it was fine.  The only other person Gayle communicated with other than her mom and Billie was the wedding planner, Patty.  

Story/Plot/Comedy

The story, while very basic, wasn’t boring at all.  It’s a bunch of jobless women who make an app together.  The story flowed very nicely but I found the beginning to drag and the movie really started to pick up in the last 30 min (which was the wedding/launch party scene).  The jokes became more organic towards the end where in the beginning, they felt kind of forced.  I also think a lot of things were resolved too quickly which I’ll talk about later.  Especially in the last 5 min.  The comedy was good and bad in some parts and when it’s good, you’re laughing out loud.  When it’s bad, it feels very forced where at times I felt I had to force myself to laugh because the audience was laughing and questioned whether it was supposed to be a joke.

Billie

Oh boy do I have a lot to say.  Billie was unlikeable which is unfortunate since she’s the main character.  Her relationship with the FA peeps were more believable and genuine than her relationship with Gayle, who was her FIANCEE.  Her and the group dynamic was actually endearing.  You want to cheer them on.  She wasn’t reprimanded for the shit she tried to pull off.  It all worked out in the end (obviously since she’s the main character and it’s a comedy) but I felt like she didn’t deserve the good ending.  She hasn’t made up for it.  She took the money that someone gave to her to help launch the app and spent it on the wedding so that Gayle wouldn’t be suspicious that she was still unemployed.  THEN, she booked her app’s launch party THE SAME TIME AS THE WEDDING TO SAVE MONEY WTF.  You’re marrying the love of your life and you want to split your time with that and your career?  I get that she’s unemployed also probably having a mid life crisis and that she finally got something going for the app but it’s just unreasonable.  Of all the characters, I found her to be the least funniest.  The thing is, she wasn’t an asshole, she actually cared too much.  She was just trying to make everyone happy.  I just didn’t like the way she went about it AND THEN made the same mistake again.  Her priorities were all over the place.  When she needed to focus on the wedding, she was focussing on the app + FA peeps and vice versa.

Billie and Gayle

The one thing I can say about their relationship was it felt unbelievable.  I believe Gayle loved her but not the other way around.  Gayle was very understanding of Billie’s unemployment and even went out to seek another job.   If anything, I felt like Billie just tolerated Gayle.  Hell, even Billie has better chemistry with her rival than her fiancee.  I just felt like Billie didn’t prioritize her enough.  She prioritized the wedding, but it felt insincere and only did it because she had to.  I honestly believe Billie would put the app before her own fiancee.  At one point, I thought they were going to break up, but I remembered it’s a comedy so they obviously wouldn’t.  I even thought they were gonna call off the wedding in the last 5 min of the movie.  Billie was lying throughout the whole movie to her fiancee and that just doesn’t sit well with me.  And before anyone asks, yes there were kisses and they were throughout the movie.  Nothing too wild.  Still felt like Gayle were into the kisses more than Billie.  One thing I commend about their relationship;  Very normal.  Very realistic. Typical couple shit.  Just like how I felt Gayle’s character, it felt very lacking in a cast full of unique characters.  But I also think it’s nice to see a normal healthy lesbian relationship being portrayed without any strange gimmicks.  They fought, they had cute moments, they had random conversations, they had dinner at home that Gayle cooked, they had to deal with mother in laws, they had to deal with changes etc. and they did it all together like normal relationships.

I felt the movie really shined (other than Natasha) when it came to these unique characters that Billie met.  However, they almost seemed like overgrown children that became more likeable as the movie went on.  Like, literally give the script to children/teens and it’d still make sense.  I actually found them all very stereotypical and annoying at the beginning and in the end, I really liked the group dynamic.  Them as individual characters wouldn’t stand out so it was good that they were together as group throughout the whole movie.  While Billie’s relationship with Gayle was dull, I found her relationship with them to be endearing and genuine.  It grew and progressed organically and I believe that Billie’s friendship and business with them will be long lasting and successful, unlike with Gayle.

The wedding planner, Patty, was supposed to be a stereotypical annoying wedding planner but I found that every scene she was in, she shined and made me laugh.  Gayle’s mom was ok but helped with Gayle’s character growth.  Gayle’s mom will be super relatable to a lot of people, especially those working in the arts.

Ending

Like I’ve said, the last 30 min (the wedding/app launch) were the best and I found myself laughing the whole time.  However I’m not satisfied with how quickly it was resolved.  Gayle found out about Billie’s scheme to have the app launch party THE SAME TIME AS THE WEDDING and what happens?  Nothing.  They kiss and the movie ends.  Gayle’s never even met the FA peeps before, so I think I’d be pretty insulted if my NOW WIFE, was also prioritizing a group of people I’ve never met and the app they made during our wedding day.

What the guys brought up was that you say you only want a simple life with just what we need, but... well, I guess we all know none of us have ANY idea what a minimal life is like, so I’d say what you mean by that is, you do value the life standard we currently have, where we never have to worry about a solid roof over our heads, food, and enough money left to support your pets. So yeah, my answer is 1) your dogs, and 2) the kinda life where we can support them x)

You’d probably agree it’s colorful but then say it’s not “stylish” though XD I think you just really like cute things but muuuuch prefer comfort first

7. If you were to decorate a room for your best friend, what would it look like, and why? !!!!! Aaahhh I’m a shit decorator with no taste, but I’d keep it minimal cause that’s how you feel best! Not a general, safe, 'everyone is worth it', or a shrug and wishy-washy kind of deliverance. It would be said with a quiet kind of conviction, like she actually means it. Because she does. And she smiles a bit at that, fondly. "Trust me, Kysme. I've been through the ringer a couple times with this kind of shit. Fucking up comes with the playing field- don't be so hard on yourself."

And I can see her doing something sweet, like reaching out and grabbing a hold of kysme's hand, gently so. Something to know that she's there, that she hears him. "But someone else's words probably mean nothing when your mind is convinced. Maybe you have to convince yourself that youre worth it, yeah?" She'd sigh, still her hand on top of his, a comfortable sort of silence.

You know with how often he takes her hand jokingly to stare at its glistening surface, it's probably the first time she held his hand of her own accord. He'd bite his lip, say something like "I'll work on it." Another moment. Then, a careful movement as to not crush the arm that was previously holding his hand, he rolls over to lie on his side, closer to her, propping himself up on one elbow. There's this intense look in his candy colored eyes as he gazes down upon her face, and this time he doesn't hide it (recap-- the time he'd get distracted looking at her while she talks about movies). He's just taking it all in, up close, straightforwardly. "...But we can change one thing first." He says, referring to the earlier question of why he hasn't kissed her yet. And---

Pt. 2--- Hypothetically speaking, if they do indeed get together, I feel nothing too much will change about their dynamics? They still have their silly banters and teasing, but finally they're not repressing their feelings so it feels more..liberating? To show some act of affection.

And I'm not saying Kysme becomes perfect boyfriend material immediately. He still makes her eyes roll to the sky with his stupidity. ("Shit, he's the biggest dumbass in the world but he's my dumbass" suddenly crosses my mind)

But there are some subtle changes in the way he acts now.(edited)

Is she going to feel bothered by his habit of occasionally sleeping with strangers (seeing her past with another pretty boy cough cough)? Cause I think the amount of times he fools around will dwindle if he's in a relationship but habits/hobbies die hard...He would try to be transparent about the matter though.

Oh gosh, your respond to the HC kind of like, feels like the perfect end already, but I will add on one thing to it- the idea of Aaliyah's heart thumping faster and faster as she realizes what exactly kysme is about to do. A loud thump, thump, thump pounding against her ears. Her eyes growing wider and her heart jumping at her throat, because holy shit...is he really gonna do it? Is he really going to do it? and when he does do it, its like something clicks in place with her head. Something nice and tender and a little scary. She'd close her eyes and sink into the kiss almost immediately, moving her hands up to cup his cheeks and hoping to god that that burning sensation comes soon- it would be safe to assume that she herself has been guilty of wondering how it would feel on her lips, sue her. (If it does come soon then she's probably left breathless and panting and if kysme asks if she needs a second she just goes "Fuck no." She was waiting for this kiss, even if she didnt think she was ever going to get it. (stay tuned for pt.2)

And I was gonna say that too, tbh! Like...they didn't need much to shift at all- theyve always been pretty comfy with each other and to the outside viewer it probably doesnt look like anything at all has changed unless they spot some nuances (like couch hand holding, aaliyah not complaining when the guy touches her, even if he grabs her by the waist or something, her sitting on his lap while watching a movie, etc) It just kind of...comes naturally. Liberating, as you say. Just...everything is right for once. (Also don't mind me but I totally wouldn't mind if this became non-hypothetical, if ya know what I mean, hueh hueh. //rubs my grubby raccoon hands together/).

The stupidity becomes endearing in a way, exactly as you say ("my big pink dumbass").

No, I don't think she's going to be bothered by it if he's honest about it (and as long as he saves his sweetest parts for her, you know? Like don't go confiding in strangers when you have a perfectly good girlfriend here to cuddle with.) The issue that destroyed her and Samael's relationship, besides the politics, was the lying to cover the hookups and the using and emotional abuse. It wasn't the fact that Sam was sleeping around, its the fact that she was the last to know, usually through other people. And what a shitty feeling is that. So even if he still has trouble with the deep conversation portion or the relationship, as long as he isn't lying to her face on petty shit, she wont make a big deal about it. Maybe even jokes about it when he tells her. ("Oh, cool. So is that the one you were talking about organizing the threesome with?") And that is to say that although she herself isn't someone to sleep around, I could see her branching out herself, once or twice. Lol (also speaking of which if we are going down this road she 'll likely tell him about that whole relationship fiasco, get ready for that can of worms kysme)
