Its super funny how my arms have gotten noticably stronger but are still hilariously weak a lot of the time.
For example, I'm pretty much incapable of doing a pull up. I'd give other examples, but that's easily the biggest one, everything else pales in comparison.
#Admittedly the whole reason for that is that I actually don't work out.#All of my exercise is just me fucking around. Most of the reason I have good legs is genetics.#it's easy to tell that I dont actually exercise my legs when you learn how easily my breath fails me when I run for any real amount of time#All of my stamina is in my legs. If I get out of breath I'm no longer capable of running without putting my torso in pain.#I was in my school's cross country for a year. I backed out due to the schedule probably wise given how overwhelming shit in school got.#My heart and lungs did become able to keep up with my legs during that. Somewhat at least. My main hindrance was still those tho.#I've been told I was good and I probably was for an 8th grader lol. I just wanted to focus on school and not school.#My flexibility is similarly maintained but I actually had to get to that. It's just easy to maintain and slowly build by just fucking aroun#I can do a funny ragdoll for example. The one where you drop to your knees and your torso flails around a little.#Normally put my back to the floor as well though

She was fidgety; even Cinder mentioned her pacing, shooting a critical eye her way. Glynda sat, intent on stillness; moments later, Cinder mentioned her bouncing leg.

On her way down the street, Glynda couldn't help but stare at the car, its tinted windows revealing nothing within. As she passed it, she kept glancing over her shoulder, expecting an attack or something. But nothing came of it.

To answer Cinder Fall and she doesn’t have a license, but she does have several warrants for her arrest felt like inviting Winter to question not only her integrity, but her sanity as well.

summary: donghyuck, your crush, dance teacher, and friend, has you come over after a late night of practice.
The boy sighed as he walked around the small studio, waiting for you to come through the doors at any minute. He was stressed obviously, not knowing how to make you learn the dance faster, not because you had to or anything was rushing the two of you, it's just that he noticed you getting frustrated whenever you would mess up or fall a bit on the tempo. He knew how it could be for a person that had just started learning their favorite idols' dances, it reminded him a bit too much of how he used to be when he'd started. Though, he did get a bit more help from his relatives, yknow, being a wizard and all he had books that had been handed down to him that he refused to use unless it was extremely needed. He played the song, wanting to start with something easy so a girl group's song would've been easier on your body, structure and all.
"FANCY" had started blaring through the speakers, the boy running to the middle of the room to get in position and revise what he had taught himself that morning, seeing if he would mess up because that would be catastrophic in his mind, messing up while teaching you something you thought he was good at. His masculine body moved through as gracefully as possible, though he nailed the whole dance, he still found where he messed up, going over and over the same part till he got it completely right, for you. "Fuck, fuck, fuck," he kept on exclaiming, running a hand through his hair before he slumped down on the ground, running the small drops of sweat that had started to form on his forehead and cheeks. You'd been watching him dance the part over and over, impressed, though confused on why he was being so hard on himself when even you didn't see the mistake. When he'd fallen over you quickly ran over thinking he passed out or something from exhaustion, which wasn't such a rare occurrence and was making you worry about the boy even more.
"Donghyuck," you said, pressing your cold hands to his wet and pink cheeks, "Are you okay?" He sighed out and you wondered what had been stressing him so badly, whether it was the dance or schoolwork. Truth be told, it had been you and your cute face that made him so flustered and forced him to close his eyes and roll on his tummy from how fast his heart was beating. "Geez, could you stop stalking me," he scoffed and managed to pull himself up before leaning over to hug you, the soft smell of not only your shower gel but also your coffee made everything he was saying about himself go away. It was obvious to everyone how much he liked you, he practically adored you and the thought of you being with him, though there were times where he thought you wouldn't even dare to do with someone like him. "Are you ready? Do I have to tie your shoelaces again just like the last few billion practices?" he teased you because he knew you were clumsy and couldn't bother to tie them amid practice.
You guys played around for a bit before starting to warm up, the new odd exercises making your hips sore out of nowhere. He knew you wouldn't be flexible and would need to warm up lots, he cared for you and a sprained muscle was the thing he wouldn't want to happen to you. Once he'd started teaching you, you noticed how he positioned your arms and used a different count-system to make you get accustomed to the tempo, catching the beat, everything you didn't bother about focusing because his voice counting to the melody was enough for you to remember it. You were happy with how quick he'd helped you learn since he knew you were impatient with yourself just like he was with himself. You danced along with him and managed to finish the intro and the first part that lead to the chorus, feeling happy and satisfied with yourself, for the most part, you leaned over to Donghyuck, wrapping your arms around him and whining, "Hyuck, I'm tired, can we go now? Let's finish it tomorrow!" you said and heard him sigh, though he knew it was too late to just let you go home by yourself, so you'd stay over at his place for a bit.
It was a quiet walk to his place, the boy seemed fairly off about something but he didn't dare say anything whenever you asked if he was okay or not. Even if he did seem okay he had a lot on his mind, wondering how the fuck he was going to hide the books from his parents before you even managed to see them. His apartment was a mess, potion recipes all over the place, hopefully, however, you wouldn't notice them once you walked inside. All of the recipes were some form of 'love' potion and he wasn't just going to reveal his never-ending crush on you, nor was he going to try out one on you and not reverse it immediately, similar recipes to reversal spells all over his living room floor. He was thoughtful, he knew he had flaws more than a normal person would, which is why he'd thought you wouldn't be interested in him, he was too weird for you to like him like that.
"Donghyuck!" he snapped out of his worried thoughts and looked up at you with a slightly tilted head, "Unlock the door," you said blankly and the boy mentally kicked himself for not noticing that the two of you had been standing for quite a while in the cold. He apologized before quickly unlocking the door and running in first to pick up all of the papers everywhere but before he could do anything your figure rushed inside right behind him. "What are these?" you asked, picking up one of the pieces of paper from his hands, the boy swallowing a bit too hard at the thought of what you'd think. "Ah! This would be fun to make!" You pointed the paper to Donghyuck, "You have the ingredients, right?" he nodded, head slumping down as he set all of the papers down and decided to take your coat and bag.
"You wanna," he stopped in his tracks to his room a bit, "You want some of my clothes? To like, get comfy and all?" he asked you and of course you couldn't pass up the option to wear something of his, he always smelled so nice and his clothing was always loose around you. You followed him and he gave you a pair of pajamas before leaving the room to change in the bathroom and let you have your peace. Once the two of you met back in the living room, the actual potion-making had started, gathering all the ingredients first was the most important thing before you moved to the kitchen. It did state that the potion had to be put in a warm glass bottle before drunk, and so, the boy provided everything that you needed, even if some of the ingredients sounded a bit odd. "Did you put a pan outside to collect rainwater for this?" He hummed in response, watching you shrug and pour in the water, his lower lip between his teeth. He knew it would work since he was in presence, he was scared that he might not be able to reverse it after a while, however.
After about an hour and a half, the whole house smelled like apple pie, Donghyuck jumping up to take it off of the stove, telling you that he'll bring it over in a bit. He wasn't going to taste it since you had wanted it he was going to leave it for you. He watched you drink it up bit by bit, his leg moving up and down, squeezing his fingers, biting his lip, he was anxious. "How is it?" he asked, "Do you feel anything?" You raised your brow at him, shaking your head, "What am I supposed to feel?"
"Love."
"This potion didn't make my love for you even stronger, it sucks," you blurted out, raising the little bottle to take in the little sip that was left, the last sentence you'd said out of the blue making him confused. He felt a bit relieved, maybe it was the potion working."It doesn't even taste like apple pie," you pouted before looking at him and his expression. He was blushing. "Hyuckie, what's wrong? Did I say something bad?" you asked him over and over and he still couldn't believe what he'd heard you say. He moved without thinking and sat next to you, bringing his knees to his chest and moving one hand to softly trace over your fingers.
He was calm and happy for once, "You really like me?" he mumbled out and glanced at you, his grey bangs covering most of his eyes so you weren't able to see how teary-eyed he'd become. You softly grabbed his hand, earning a small gasp of relief from the boy, Hyuck, of course, I like you, I think I've been pretty obvious about that by now," you sand softly and turned toward him, your other hand grabbing to caress his cheek, "You're literally the cutest person ever, how could i not?" You felt your hand encounter something wet, probably a tear that he shed because he'd never really been complimented on his cuteness. "I really like you too," he said, "Like, more than a lot, it's indescribable even," he quickly leaned over to press a peck on your cheek, your skin encountering his burning and pink cheeks. He was shy, embarrassed even and too scared to initiate anything in case you were uncomfortable. Though you weren't disappointed when you'd kissed him, he didn't move for a second, not realizing what was happening at the moment, it was a shock to him. Eventually, he kissed back and pulled you closer, his hands gently resting on your waist as he pulled you even closer, letting out a soft whine when he'd pulled back because of lack of air. "Wanna make another potion tomorrow?" he asked softly, knowing he would suddenly be interested in the books he was given on his birthday, happy to see you agree.
The two of you fell asleep on his couch that night, happy that somehow his weird magic scripts brought the two of you together.

what are your gym goals and can you make a beginners guide?
lol i still really feel like a beginner, but ye, i can share some things that have helped me!
i want to bulk up and get myself what puberty didn’t give me Lol. that is, a nice peach, bulking up my arms, keeping my abs defined. also using it to get a handle on mental health, managing anxiety and shifting chemical. so far so gooooood. i’m really happy.
first thing i did about a year ago when i started this was to watch many youtube videos. a lot. of videos. hours worth. it helped me feel like i knew what i was doing as soon as i walked into the gym for the first time. i knew what i was going to do, what to expect. wasn’t wandering around lost. so i suggest whitney simmons, jazmine garcia, nikki blackketter, grace fit uk, and heidi somers, if you’re looking for badass, genuinely lovely women to follow.
i follow their instagrams and youtube and screencap workouts i like. sometimes i do them, sometimes i just incorporate exercises i like into my workout. these are great for a couple reasons. you learn to use machines and you learn good form. i’ve also bought jaz’s flourish strong program and such, and they’re helpful. bodybuilding.com is also a good resource :)
if you hated it one day, it might not be that you hate working out. i discovered a couple weeks ago that working out at 7 am (or just 40 min after i wake up) is the worst possible thing i could do for my body. the time you workout also matters. the best time for me is mid afternoon or evening. depends on your energy levels!
eat a preworkout an hour-45 minutes beforehand. i like to have black tea for caffeine, and either a granola bar or a bit of fruit with peanut butter. even a piece of whole grain bread and peanut butter is good.
wear layers. dude it might be 98 degrees out, but i’m still going in there with leggings, a crop top, and a flannel. this is me and my anxiety and the need to feel covered lol. by the end, i have the flannel tied around my waist, but it’s like a security blanket. keeps me from feeling exposed.
your shoes matter. running shoes = cardio. think cushy, comfy nikes/adidas/whatever. flat soled shoes = weights. think converse, vans, i even end up wearing minnetonkas lol. lifting shoes = lifting. fat soles are 100% find, but some people find that the slightly elevated heal helps. i haven’t gone that far, but it might be an option for you.
take music. also, wear a baseball hat if you really want to keep yourself from everyone else. if anyone watches you, they’re either assholes or they’re gathering inspiration (seriously).
begin with some bodyweight activation/warm up if you’re doing strength training. that is, leg swings to warm up your hips, rolling your wrists and ankles and shoulders. do a few squats, really squeezing your glutes. calf raises. activate your muscles. warm them up. also a good time to use a foam roller.
stretch afterwards! damn it! stretch! so important to avoid injury!
keep track of your workout with an app like myfitnesspal. it helps me keep track of my weights and sets so i know for sure whether or not i’m increasing. also gives you something to do between sets.
take it slow! don’t put too much stock in numbers! so many really strong people still use 5 lbs for some exercises, doesn’t mean anything. speaking of which,
define your goal and work accordingly. fewer reps (1-5), heavier weight = strength mid range reps (6-12), mid range weight = muscle buildingmore reps (15+), lighter weight = enduranceif you’re trying to lose weight, do not forgo strength training. muscles burn calories faster than fat, so you’re going to want to lose fat and gain muscle. since fat is lighter than muscle, you might notice that your weight doesn’t change as much, but that’s cool. likewise, if you’re trying to gain muscle, cardio is also good for building endurance. stairmaster is your boo that will Actually Murder you.when you’re working with weights, it’s a good idea to calculate your max rep. enter what you usually work with, for how many reps you usually work with, and this calculator will tell you your max rep (the max weight you can lift at one rep). why is this important? so i’m someone who doesn’t feel like they succeeded if they don’t go to burnout/have pain. knowing your max rep helps you manage your fatigue. that is, you choose a weight you can manage for 11 reps, but you only do 8, for example. so i like to do 3 sets of 12 reps, so i should be going at about 70-75% of my max one rm.this can help you if you decide to lift heavier and less, or lift lighter and more.you can also combine these concepts. if you want, you can create descending/ascending reps for altered weighted sets. that is, for example, you can increase your weight and decrease your reps with every set, or decrease your weight and increase reps with every set.ALSO. i’d be doing you a disservice if i didn’t mention diet!!! start eating cleaner and according to your goals. for example, if you’re bulking, you need to up your calorie intake, and your protein intake. no matter what your goal is, ffs, don’t use a ~diet~! no! my guy! diets are not sustainable, and we’re trying to build a happy lifestyle here. balance is everything. my coworkers have had success with going sugar free and/or vegetarian (i’m already vegetarian, almost vegan). but those are lifestyle shifts more than anything. they’re making good choices, rather than restricting and cutting out foods. i will say that once you get over the hump, you’ll crave less. gluten free made me cry once a week, but now i dont even crave bread or cake or pasta. this is coming from someone whose favorite foods were always those. same thing with cheese. regardless, get over the hump, build a lifestyle, and MAKE YOURSELF HAPPY. that’s the whole entire point.
end with a light, easy burnout on your focus area. your goal isn’t to make this hard, but just to exhaust the muscle group. so i tend to do bodyweight + 10 lbs on a small movement and just go until i can’t. makes me feel accomplished. THAT BEING SAID. do NOT burn out your body! im sooo sick of this “i vomited at the gym!” mentality. nuuh. don’t hurt your body. be gentle. you don’t need that. when i say burnout, i mean light, easy, and for one muscle, like your glutes. working out until you see stars or throw up isn’t good for you. at all. your body is doing its best. be nice.
workout in splits. this is why building routine is so important. currently, my workout schedule is a little sporadic, so i am there much longer doing a full body workout. however, if you can for sure get there more than twice times a week, make a workout split. the major muscle groups are as followed, with recommended pairings:back + bicepslegs + shoulderschest + tricepsabsthe logic is in the fact that when you work triceps, you’re probably also working your chest in the exercise, so fitting them together makes sense. creating splits helps you isolate the muscle group and really get them done.
rest 👏days👏are👏important👏 consider rest days a part of your split. as in, make. sure. you have rest days scheduled. do not workout every day. nope. your body needs time to rebuild iteself. give it that time.
experiment to keep interest. there are a lot of ways to work a specific muscle group. the easiest example i can give is that i have found i love doing abs on an exercise ball. that is, depending on the way i drape my spine over the sphere of the exercise ball, i can go beyond a full crunch, since my spine is arched, while also receiving support on my crappy spine.
take classes and/or get a trainer. i havent gotten a trainer bc im poor af and would be too anxious at this point Lol. however, i love yoga classes so much. i swear by them. integrating yoga with strength training is a serious aid in terms of mental health, physical stability, and flexibility, which are also important when you’re bulking. so it all cross pollinates and gets my interest hyped! :)
afterwards drink a cup of lukewarm water and eat a protein bar. makes all the difference when you feel like you just died, i promise. alternatively, make a protein shake, drink protein water, however you’re getting protein.
take progress photos every month or so. same place, same poses. i take them in snapchat and use the date filter, bc it’s easy. i suggest dumping them all in a specific folder- and not looking in that folder for quite a while. that way, when you need motivation later on after progress has surely been made, you’ll see the difference. it makes me weepy and i love it even if some months i know nothing has changed. (that’s okay.)
so ye. really all my advice comes from doing research and keeping myself comfy. take it slow! do you! everyone in there is present for the same reason, to better themselves. we all start out sometime, we all have different goals, and we are all making progress. so are you. it’s all good.

Curl your eyelashes! I know it sucks. But it’s so worth it. No amount of makeup or mascara is going to give u the same effect of just curling your lashes. Sometimes I don’t even wear makeup and I’ll just curl my eyelashes anyway for just a little oomph
Pro tip: go slowwww when crimping, it will hurt if u catch some skin (not that I have to tell you). Start halfway down your lashes. This 1) curls the tips.. which tend to ‘fall’ if they’re packed with mascara 2) it gathers the lashes together all nice so when u go in to curl the base of the lashes ur not fighting with all the hairs. *
Curl them a bunch of times before adding mascara.. I curl my lashes like… a stupid amount.. like 5-10 times per eye, minumum, before I even put mascara on. Like I said mascara with weigh them down immediately so don’t worry if they look over curled. I tend to do my hair in 3 sections. And so between each section of hair I stop.. let the straightener heat back up and curl my lashes
Only buy lipstick with blue undertones and NOT orange or yellow undertones. Especially reds. Orange undertones make teeth look yellow while blue undertones make them look whiter
HAIR
Use a ceramic straightener.. NO METAL!! * Homemade shampoo: Baking soda and water; I only wash my hair every 4 days and i do it once and it holds a curl (without product) until I shower again
Use a skinny straightener to curl hair instead of a curler
Bonus tip..when curling; try to grab different sized sections of hair or use varying sized barrels to get big, full, natural looking curls
Rinse hair and skin under Cool water before exiting the shower which closes pores and hair shafts reducing frizz and leaving hair and skin looking glowy… if u dare !
HYGEINE
Alright this ones a little strange but I actually brush my teeth every time I poop lol I’m already in the bathroom. Just sitting there doing nothing.. and if your a healthy pooper then your brushing ur teeth 2+ times per day. Also it’s just an easy reminder.. before I started doing this I used to forget all the time and realize 10 minutes after I left the house for the day that I didn’t brush… yuck!
Work up a sweat in the bathroom before showering Another little time saver (bonus laundry saver if you do it nude) I try to exercise in the bathroom before showering. Giving myself like 20 minutes minimum to just do some squats and exercises.. work up a little sweat before hopping in the shower and washing it off. Sweating also opens your pores making cleansers more effective
^ this is also a great time to put on any masks that need to be rinsed put or use this time to rub some lemon over the dark areas of your skin (elbows, armpits bikini area, etc.) to lighten them and rinse it off in the shower
Use a buzzer instead of a razor.. 95% of the time I use a buzzer.. legs, admits, bikini area.. 1)it’s saves time 2)you can buzz in or out of the shower and 3)I hate razor itch more then anything.. and u look like a money scratching ur pits or a pedophile scratching ur crotch for the next 2 days after shaving. There are times when u NEED to get close and that calls for a razor. But the majority of the time you can get away with a buzzer.. think of how smooth a mans face gets.. And they make ones specifically for women.
CLOTHING, COLORS + STYLE
No empire waists.. ever.. they don’t look good on anyone.. it makes perfect models look like they have no curves and it makes curvy women look pregnant. Just don’t do it.. trust me. Instead try a fitted shirt. One that gently hugs the waist. Or even a belt.
Try red: pretty pretty please try red.. lips, clothes, heels, nails. Just try it. I don’t care if your blond, brunette or a redhead. Pale skin, olive skin, brown skin. Make sure u try it on before buying.. don’t just buy it because U like the shade of red.. there are a lot of different shades of red so make sure it goes well with your skin color. Ull know if it DOESNT match.. trust your instincts. If ur still unsure ask an employee for an 'honest opinion’. (Specify honest opinion in order to show that your not just fishing for compliments) Bonus points if you actually wear it out and don’t just let it sit in the back of your closet. U might not like it but at least u tried it. And I would put money on the likelihood that you receive compliments and/or the man in ur life ends up loving it on you.
Let him dress you Trust ur man.. and if u can’t do that.. then you can put ALL ur faith in the fact that he wants to be seen with a hot girl just as much as you want to feel sexy. So let him dress u sometimes (if he’s willing.. which he should be.. cuz that’s hot as fuck) and ask him for his opinion as often as it strikes you.Even if u don’t like what he chooses.. don’t just suggest something else.. TRY WEARING IT.. he’s the one who has to look at u all night anyway. And if he doesn’t like it u bet ur ass he won’t be suggesting that next time lol
Don’t add unnecessary pieces u will rarely ever see me with a belt that isn’t actually holding up my pants. Or a scarf on a warm day. Or even sunglasses on a cloudy day. If it’s unnecessary then drop it it’s not doing u any good and even on the best day- u carried it around all day and never used it.. on a bad day- I probably lost it (I don’t mean accessories like jewlery shoes or bags)
Dont wear brands or labels my grandfather always said “why spend your hard earned money on anything that has a brand or name sprawled across it? They should be paying YOU for the free advertising” and I’ve always taken that to heart. My only 2 exceptions are musicians and sports teams.. and that’s because you are actually trying to show your support.
Black is and always will be your best friend. But find your “color” or 2 (ones that compliment your skin, hair and eyes) and try to wear that just as often
Bonus tip. Take notice when people compliment you. If they say something along the lines of “I like that shirt” or “that shirt looks nice” - they are most often complimenting the shirt. If they say “you look nice in that shirt” or - then they are compliment YOU and more likely then not.. the color on you LTake notice when people makes unsolicited compliments.. especially if u get multiple compliments in one day.. and note what they are complimenting u on. A Physio’s Step By Step Guide To Kicking Your Own Ass
It’s tough to overstate the importance of positive self-talk. We all go through it. If you think you can do it, you can. And if you think you can’t, you won’t. Our eight-year-old says that.
You can see the impact of owning that kind of positivity everywhere. Positive people enjoy more positive outcomes and lead happier lives. But the best examples are most obvious in sports, where the things you say to yourself before, during and after a workout have a MASSIVE impact on your performance.
That’s all good. There are literally hundreds of thousands of books and feel-good blogs you can follow if you’re into that. But I like practical things. I like tips and “life hacks” that actually move the needle for me. So when I got the chance recently to train with a couple of top ten CrossFit athletes in Zürich at “CrossFit Kreis 9” I had questions.
If you’re into fitness and you’re not familiar with CrossFit then shame on you, but for the sake of brevity here it’s “constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity.” Lots of weight lifting, gymnastics, intense group workouts, rarely the same workout twice..
The top athletes compete under extreme load and are arguably the fittest people on the planet. I wanted to know how they managed to train and compete with such intensity. I came away with three HUGE insights that have not only transformed the way I train but the way I want to live my life.
1. The Obstacle Is The Way
Look for where it’s hardest. Where you see resistance and struggle, that’s GREAT. That’s where you know if you really focus effort you’re gonna get massive gain and massive satisfaction. Go there.
The obstacle is the way. When you find an obstacle LOVE IT. It’s what’s gonna differentiate you and your results from everyone else.
This is why you see some pros are ACTUALLY SMILING when they’re working out. They’re happy because the way forward is obvious to them. All they need to do is execute.

2. Never

Ever
..Ever say you are “wasted” or anything like that during or after a workout. NEVER say it! Do not let your mind go there. This is so important.
Do not say „omg I’m *$# !“ after a workout – or you know what I mean. Whatever you usually joke to the person next to you right afterward. It’s not a joke. Never say it.
NEVER go to your knees and talk about how destroyed you are.
Lots of us do it. It’s cool somehow. But these are trigger words and they’re extremely damaging.
The truth is for 99.9% of us you are nowhere near being brought to your knees after a workout. Unless you’ve hit your head hard or something similar it’s never anything like that. You’re not really that tired. So physically it’s not necessary – it’s much better to walk around getting rid of lactic acid and doing some deep breathing – but mentally this is *MASSIVE*
Because in those moments where your physiology is experiencing a heightened sense of awareness, the language you use and the messages you send to your subconscious have extreme meaning and impact attached to them. Your mind sets them as anchors.
The best thing to do in that moment is actually to tell yourself how awesome you are. Even if you failed a set. Talk about how lucky you are to work out. “Self talk” yourself on how super strong you are. Laugh and anchor the experience as positive and empowering. Again, look at the pros after their events. Sometimes they DO fall down because they really are in trouble but 9 times out of 10 they’re actually laughing. Almost all of that is self talk.
Your mind is paying attention to everything when you’re in that extreme state. If you say „omg I’m so exhausted” even if you’re just joking, your mind will anchor that and associate that negative talk with working out. And that’s gonna hurt you next time you work out.
(Note: it should be obvious but NONE OF THIS is any kind of medical advice. See a physician before training yada yada. If you really are broken after a tough set then by all means go and lay down. We’re talking about performance here)
3. Be Your Own Boss
Ask yourself this: how much does your internal narrative affect your output? What do you think?
That’s widely variant for me, as I would expect for many. But it’s probably close to 90% at times.
Mid-workout or mid-set, when you’re really positive and owning that internal conversation, and you know “you can do it” then you just shut that negative voice down right?
All of your focus is on moving and working and you’re loving it. That other annoying “you“, the one coming up with excuses for stopping, or distracting you with life’s problems and sapping your energy, that voice is nowhere.
Sometimes that negative self talk can stop you even getting to the gym in the first place. Many people don’t even work out at all because of this. Sometimes it’s completely rational „I’ll feel even better if I get xyz done.“ But it has no place inside the gym.
There’s a method you can learn right now though that will shut that voice down forever. I did it, I tested it and the results are profound.
Test one: Stop Thinking Inside The Box
To be crystal clear (again): I do not recommend the following. You really need to be your own person sometimes. This was an experiment. I needed to see if you could get this “mind over body” thing and shut that voice down.
I used to talk to myself like this after a workout: „That’s already good. Important to just keep moving. Think of the long term. Do a better workout tomorrow. Dont want to overdo it.” Sound familiar? I even cheated a lot. “Noone will notice you did 7 instead of 8 reps“ and so on.
Running was the worst. I love to run but I would rarely go all out. Especially sprinting. I would plan 100m and do 80m. Then tell myself that still puts me in a top percentile of most people and way better than doing nothing which is all true. You even hear good trainers say „yeah great man you kept moving that’s the important thing.“
That is all bullshit.
The big takeaway I got from my pro CrossFitter friends was as follows. “The only conversation you should have with yourself when you are training is about moving and working. Technique and effort. Motion and intensity.”
Of course we’re talking about focus here, but focus inherently means different things for all of us. For training we want to shut down other distracting thoughts. Do you want to put more energy and discipline into what you’re thinking, or free up that energy so you can go heavier and love your workout?
To test this thesis I picked a simple exercise that’s physically challenging for me but technically easy so I didn’t have to think much – burpee box jumps. (If you want to try this yourself pick something that’s tough but kind of easy to do, and something you like so you’ll want to go for it. Do NOT try this with a bar!)
Burpee box jumps are exactly that: burpee, then jump up on a 24 inch box, jump back down, repeat. All you need to think is drop. get up. jump. drop. (Here’s how they’re done if you’re curious)
So I started to do these and was determined not to allow any other single thought into my head. If I caught myself drifting (which is natural) I just went back to my chant. “Drop. Get up. Jump. Drop.”
You can even shout this to yourself. Single word orders are extremely powerful and will disrupt almost any thought pattern instantly. That’s why it works so well when you bark at your kids (note: Kids, if you’re reading this, relax. We love you very much. Go read something else)
I’m usually pretty tired after 10 of those burpee box jumps, and I am cooked by 20. I did 52.
Well, technically I did 51 and then I fell onto the box and then hard on the floor. I got quite a bad bruise on my side and hip and it hurt a lot. My legs failed on the 52nd rep and I fell. (I strongly suspect the 50th rep was some kind of mental milestone and I gave up, but who knows.)
My point is it’s EASY to push past your max once you know how. Using single word instructions you can shout at yourself to control that internal conversation during a workout is extremely powerful.
If you’re doing squats then just “drop” – you’ll figure out how to get up again. If you’re doing press then just control the weight down to your chest and then “pop” or “drive.” Like that.
Shouting the words to yourself shuts down all of the other internal talk so you can just focus on moving and working and feeling good.
Test Two. You Don’t HAVE TO Do This. It’s a privelege.
The second test I did was a more controlled one and something you can carry over into life (which is kind of the idea of all this.)
Last week I had a reasonably tough CrossFit workout here in Noosa that was split in two rounds. It was kind of a weird workout with strict pull-ups (lots of them!), double unders (skipping), shoulder press (I think), then more double unders, then more pull-ups.
The rounds were timed with a four minute break in between. Four minutes is sweet. You can bring your heart rate right down in that time. It’s that long. You could probably even get to sleep.
Anyway, I was tired after the first round. I was dripping sweat, everything hurt, my heart rate was maxed out, and I was out of breath. You know the feeling.
So I went outside to try to cool down and I was looking around and there’s palm trees around us and I was breathing deep and just saying to myself omfg you are so fortunate right now. This place is amazing. All the people here are so good to you. Everyone here wants to see you crush this workout. You feel amazing and ALIVE and how lucky are we all to just be ALIVE right now? Now go in there and have some respect. Give everything. Give! Everything! (Note: Pick whatever works for you OK? This is just the way I talk to myself)
I had 4:42 for the first round. I did the second round in 3:18.
That should not be possible. Not even close. I was already warm and I felt good when I started the first round. I’m reasonably fit and I genuinely went for it. When I started the 2nd round I was tired and burned physically. But I didn’t match my time. I smashed my time!
The Most Successful People Don’t Have The Best Of Everything. They Make The Best Of Everything.
Choose your own self talk. But find something empowering. Whatever does that for you. Dumbing your chant down to single word instructions that you shout at yourself shuts down any other voice. (The last thing you need when you are mid set is some intellectual talking to you.) Putting yourself in a positive state of gratitude makes it physiologically impossible to feel weak and tired at the same time.
I’m far from being any kind of top athlete but these were both massive results for me. And I think the lessons here are powerful insights you can carry over into all aspects of your life.
Look for the pain, look for the challenge and LOVE it. Because that’s where you’re gonna grow and that’s where you’re gonna feel most fulfilled. And don’t ever, EVER give up. Don’t allow it to happen.
Nobody can do this for you. You can pay doctors, physios, personal trainers or life coaches all day long to coach you and advise you on what to do. Getting help from experts and modelling behavior of those that have succeeded before you is enormously helpful in achieving your goals. But in that moment where you need to act – it’s all you.

We both really enjoyed our first lesson with Christa Dillion from Blackhill Eventing, so much so that we got her out for a second! Lessons where you get pushed and challenged to the best of your ability are definitely the kind of lessons that we need at the minute. We both feel we need something or someone to push us forward.
Have a read below about what we tackled in our lesson along with a short Q&A with Christa herself.
The 3 Exercises We Tackled
Exercise #1 – Related Distance Canter Poles
Our first exercise was a basic set of 2 canter poles with a distance of four strides in between. Trying to maintain a steady forward rhythm & focus on a good approach to the first pole was key in hitting this exercise correctly.
Exercise #2 – Bounce Poles
To begin with, this exercise was set up with 5 bounce/canter poles. As we progressed through (after a lot of time spent putting poles back in place by Christa!) the 5 canter poles became 4 with a cross pole jump put in place of the 5th pole at the end. Talk about challenging!
Exercise #3 – Double with Trot Poles and Bounce Poles
Finishing up the lesson Christa set up a small grid. This consisted of an approach of 3 trot poles into a cross pole, two bounce ground poles then into an upright, which then progressed into a spread. Both horses surprisingly rode this exercise spot on each time. I think all the pole work above definitely helped set them up for it.
How Did Coco & Dante Get On?
Orla & Coco
My focus for this lesson was getting Coco to stop tanking me into fences. She has started rushing into fences and then dropping at the last second causing her to jump like a donkey. So the exercises Christa set out were perfect!
My first issue however was Coco’s irritating spooking in her least favourite corner of the arena. Trying to get her to concentrate was difficult but after a while I decided I just needed to ignore it and try to get on with things.
After a quick warm up we started over the related distance canter poles. Well..you’d swear I had put a 1.20 spread in front of her the way she bombed at it. When she did this my focus had to be on correcting her but not letting the correction kill all of her impulsion. That is something I need to find the balance with. Coco’s a very eager jumper who tends to do a few leaps before jumps so I sometimes struggle to control that energy without killing it and having to build it back up again. The way to do this was to compress the canter by half halting while also applying leg to keep your impulsion. Needless to say I was quite nackered by the end of this lesson!
Funnily enough she took to the other two exercises extremely well. She was quite consistent with the bounce poles and our only issue with the grid was that she kept trying to pop into canter over the trot poles so I needed to contain her energy and not let it explode too soon. At the end of the grid was the scary corner so we had a few silly moments down there when we put all three exercises together but thankfully it wasn’t anything that stopped her from jumping (which has been the case before)!
All in all I was delighted with how well Coco did. I feel like our confidence is improving so the plan is to gradually start increasing the height of fences at home and getting ourselves out to do some schooling in new environments.
Darielle & Dante
For this lesson I went in not really expecting much from Dante. I have found in the past that if I do it all tends to flip & go backwards.
Working on Dante accepting the contact more from my leg up into my hand is still a major issue we are tackling, some days he’s fantastic, soft & subtle then some days hes a stubborn mule. He is a horse that likes to be in control of his own self, and when I step in and interfere or try get him to listen to me he kicks up a fuss… this at times is frustrating, but it is something I am dealing with & learning to correct myself, all whilst still trying to ignore his ratty behaviour.
As we progressed into the lesson, Getting Dante to listen to my leg aids became quite difficult that in turn with trying to half halt him, he blatantly just ignored me & continued to try do what he wanted to do, blasting forward at times or not wanting to move forward at all. This sounds dreadful, but picture an octopus trying to run… this is Dante…but he is a massive horse that still doesn’t know how much body he actually has, and to be fair to him he has come a very long way with managing it to the best of his ability & mine!
The most beneficial exercise to us were the canter poles into the cross pole. There were a few moments where I had to pull him out of his approach as he’d cock the jaw and try run off with control, there were moments that I had to circle to get a good balanced canter on our approach. There were some good moments in there too, dont get me wrong but most of our work consisted of compressing his canter & keeping a firm leg on him all whilst trying to keep a flowing moving canter.
It was god dam difficult let me tell you, but we got there in the end!
We had some great positive moments in our lesson too, his approach to fences was a lot more relaxed, he waited and listened to me more than he did in our previous lesson, so over all great progress is being made & I am quite content with that & delighted!
Moving forward a LOT more work is needed in his canter, within the different paces pushing him forward and out of his comfort zone, getting him moving rather than letting him stick to the same consistant pace, but hey, perfection takes time!!
Q&A with Christa Dillon of Blackhill Eventing
How did you get into coaching, tell us about yourself?
Answer: I am a 37 year old farmer’s wife and mother of one small, flame haired and feral four year old boy. I am a professional lorry driver in my spare time, and I am staunchly proud of my Artic license! I competed in eventing until 2012, when a lack of horses forced a change of direction into producing youngsters. I adore showjumping, especially the training-we are so lucky in Ireland to be able to learn with some truly exceptional riders and coaches, enabling us to produce confident, well educated young horses capable of good success in any sport. During the winter, I gave a friend a hand with her horse. To my great surprise, my advice actually worked. I generally always know what to do when I’m in the saddle, but watching from the ground is a whole other ball game. My friend is extremely persuasive, and she encouraged/demanded that I took out insurance to teach. The same friend then twice over arranged training clinics for me, and thanks to her I now have a good client base. I really enjoy helping others, and I’m very grateful to those who have helped to make coaching a reality.
What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Answer: ‘Hot horses are always lazy’, from Paul O’Shea. It can be taken literally, but it’s more to make you remember that if a horse is throwing a ton of attitude at you to avoid actually working, there is pretty well always a reason. It’s up to you to figure the reason out! Also, ‘The best place for four year old horses is often the field’, from Trevor Breen. This has proven to be true a million times over for me
What’s your favourite part about producing horses?
Answer: Oh everything! Learning about who they are, how they need to be ridden, what they find easy and difficult. It’s so satisfying when they suddenly understand something, or make a big jump forward in their training. To quote Piggy French, ‘I’m just addicted to working with horses’.
Do Coco or Dante remind you of any horses you’ve owned or worked with in the past?
Answer: Coco reminds me a lot of my own 4 yr old mare-both very willing and absolute workaholics, supremely intelligent and genuine, but both with their own boundaries of acceptance-find the key, and you have the horse of a lifetime. Dante reminds me-in looks at least-of a very cool KWPN gelding I had a few years ago called Vector M2S. He went on to jump 1m40 in Ireland, before being sold to Italy. I am in contact with his owner which makes me so happy as I adored the horse. He is stabled at Luca Maria Moneta’s yard, near Lake Como.
What tips would you give to anyone producing a young horse to keep their confidence levels up?
Answer: Be patient. Find the most experienced person you can, and learn as much as you can. A young horse needs a wide foundation of education to maintain confidence throughout his training, so work hard to put that in place. Never rush or overface a young horse, praise him always-especially if he’s struggling with something-and never be afraid to take a step back or take a break. Avoid the pressure of age classes and the ‘your horse should be doing X Y Z at 4,5,6’ brigade. Train each horse as an individual, at a pace that best suits him.
Finally, in your opinion what types of exercises should we be doing with both horses to keep progressing forward?
Dante: Dante has made huge progress since I saw him a month ago. He’s a difficult horse who ultimately needs to learn to compress his frame and listen to his rider. He currently alternates between listening almost too much, or not listening at all when Darielle asks him to come to work, but I would take this as a huge positive as it shows that he’s trying so hard to work it out and very close to a more permanent and consistent way of going. Lots of canter poles so that horse and rider can work on a more consistent stride pattern. Rows of bounces can be helpful, as can gridwork with ground poles. Anything to get Dante to look at what he’s doing, and begin to learn to balance himself in a more ‘together’ canter. He’s a fabulous horse and this is a very nice, progressive partnership.
Coco: Coco is the coolest. She’s so willing and interested in work. She’s quite consistent now in her way of going, and like Dante I see a huge improvement on how she was going a month ago. With a horse like her, I would use loads of poles in trot and canter to keep her thinking. I would give her enough to do, without pushing her too hard. I imagine that variety would suit her, so I would encourage plenty of hacking, shows, trips away schooling, a spin up the gallops, lunging etc. Make every day fun for her. Coco and Orla look like best friends hanging out together, having the craic.
Well there you have it, our lesson with Christa. We are having another lesson tomorrow so hopefully we will see even more progress with both horses and continue to grow and move forward.
