i keep seeing "i've read fanfic better than some published novels!" passed around again and like. i'm sure you have. they're still two different mediums though and comparing them is not as descriptive as you're implying.
it's like saying "i've seen movies with better writing than some published novels!" i'm sure you have, but that doesn't really say anything about published novels though. they're two different mediums with two different sets of conventions trying to achieve, to some degree, two different things. just because fanfic and novels are two longform written mediums doesn't mean they're the same medium.
#if you've ever tried to adapt a fanfic to an original fiction work to submit or publish elsewhere you probably know this#it's an ADAPTATION if done correctly again illustrating that you're adapting a work from one medium to another#also yeah obviously what is published is not necessarily a marker of quality it's unfortunately often a marker of marketability#i thought we all knew this already like this isn't big news#this is not to say that getting published is easy and you do have to hit some baseline standard of quality#i've been doing the literary journal circuit for a while i think i'd be a hypocrite if i said otherwise#but in the same way there are a ton of talented local bands that will never have record deals#there are a ton of very talented writers who will never get a book deal#ren speaks#ok to rb
