all-in-one planner can Track all your achievements and self-growth goals
A random tweet in 2020 made me really rethink my life. It read âMy phone apps have more updates than my life doesâ. Funny? Sure. Poignant? Certainly. I remember reading the tweet and laughing internally, before realizing how painfully true it was. I hadnât done much growth because I hadnât set goals for myself. I hadnât really tracked them either, and that just caused time to slip away while I remained the same. The best way to track progress is to measure it. And that's the reason I need something like all-in-one planner. Whether itâs marking your height on a wall as a child. Or standing on a weighing scale and seeing an improvement, or just simply ticking things off a to-do list. Thereâs joy in structuring your life goals and validation in checking them off your list as a testament to your own personal growth. The designers (and close friends of YD) at UDLAB just launched their second edition of the Achiever Planner, a versatile all-in-one planner and goal-tracker that lets you mark your daily/weekly/monthly progress across various fields, tracking professional events, travel plans, fitness goals, nutritional/food intake, finances, and even your own personal habits. Short of reading a Deepak Chopra book or hiring a life coach, the Achiever Planner 2 helps you easily watch your personal progress unfold before your eyes. Because itâs documented there for you to see. The all-in-one planner comes in two sizes, as a smaller A5 book in portrait mode. Or a slightly larger yet equally portable B5 book in landscape mode. Giving that its very job is to motivate you into being your best self. It comes with a rather luxurious PU leather cover, with debossed motivational messages and cheers on the front. And pockets on the back for post-it notes or even stashing your phone or stationery. On the inside, the diary/planner comes with high-quality 120 gsm paper and boasts of an undated and need-agnostic layout. Which is a fancy way of saying that the diary isnât restricted to any particular calendar year (like most planners are). And it comes with an all-in-one design that lets you simultaneously capture your work/schedule, travel, fitness, finances, nutrition, and even your habits. With a couple of pages for you to write your own personal motivational quotes and stories in. The Achiever Planner 2 builds on the success of its predecessor, which saw over 2000 units shipping to more than 60 countries. It comes with a versatile and cleverly crafted layout too. Courtesy of multidisciplinary designers and design educators at UDLAB Products (who also made this detailed designerâs guide on nature-inspired design in 2020). Itâs easy to lose your entire day to Netflix and a massive bag of Doritos. But having your own goals written down ahead of you definitely helps structure your life. Sure, everyone deserves a few off-days or recovery days. But the Achiever all-in-one Planner 2 acts as the carrot and stick to motivate you to achieve your goals and live your best year. The planners come in portrait A5 and landscape B5 across various colors. With a super early bird price of $29, and will be shipping in December. Just in time for documenting your 2022 goals and plans! Read the full article

Looking to the past, it is a challenge to find teen girls who shaped our nation- although they existed. The truth is American History is Girls History. The men who wrote history (and it was mostly white men) did not always leave room to discuss the accomplishments of women and teen girls. The more historians investigate archives and things like diaries and letters, the more we learn about women and teens who changed the nation. Surely, many amazing young women (and men)âs accomplishments are lost to history. Or, they are at least very well hidden.
Some of these young women may even be your ancestors.
This standard sized, A5 planner introduces dozens of girls and women who changed the face of: literature, sports, poetry, music, politics, technology, every aspect of culture you can imagine. Each day includes a young woman or event that changed American history or an idea for a fun and empowering activity. Supplemental pages feature movie and book lists, mantras, and activities that will leave you in awe of the power of women and girls.
The planner will be spiral bound with a cardboard cover, size A5; perfect for putting in your backpack or purse. Please consider supporting this massive project on Kickstarter:Â https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/missheardmedia/the-2019-girl-powered-planner

Hey Guys!
Welcome back. Today I am doing another collective haul. I know I only posted one of these a couple of weeks ago, but I will be honest with you, I wrote that at the beginning of last month, so I have actually brought several things since then, so I thought that I would share them with you. Lets do this shit.
The first place that I brought some items from was WHSmithâs. And all of it was office/home-wear stuff. First I picked up two of these really cute metal storage boxes. They are a light blue, aqua colour and have this cut out flower like design on them. I really like these. They where ÂŁ6.99 and on by one get one half price, so I got them for ÂŁ10.48. they are a really decent size and I now use them to house my nail varnishes. I think I am going to pick up anther couple of these at some point as I have a lot of nail varnishes and have nearly completely filled the two that I brought. Also in here I picked up two letter file, organiser things. I only want one but they where buy one get one free, so I got two. They are just simple kraft ones. They are plain brown on the outside and one is teal inside, the other is black. Really simple, but really cute. They where ÂŁ1.49, and, as I said, bogof, so I got two for that. I am planning to use these to organise my bookmarks. I tend to use postcards as bookmarks, so they take up more room. But these will be perfect to keep them all together and make it easier to chose which one I want. I will probs see if a member of my family want the other one, but if not, I will find some use for it. Also in here I picked up two clearance notebooks. One A4, one A5, they are simple black, plastic , flexible ones. One was ÂŁ1, the other 50p. Both are really simple, but will be very useful.
Also in WHSmithâs I may have brought myself 9 of the new Lego Mini-figuresâŚ..whoops. If you donât know, I tend to buy all of the kind of very novelty ones or any that I just really like. There are usually only one or two in each collection that I want, but this time there where loads that I wanted. So I got all the ones I wanted (btw, they are blind garb bags, but, you can feel them and pretty easily work out which is which, so thatâs what I do so I only have the ones that I want). They are ÂŁ2.99 each and now reside on my books shelf. Out of curiosity, would you be interested in seeing all the mini-figures that I have? Let me know.
Next I went to Topshop and I brought some underwear. I popped in with my sister and saw Disney pants on three for ÂŁ10, so naturally, I brought some. I got a pair of Lion King ones, some Aladdin one and some Beauty And The Beast ones. I am a massive child, but I donât care. I love them.
I also popped into Candle Scentral during their loyalty event and picked up a new Flamingo Candle. I got myself the scent Mermaid Lagoon. This one kind of smells like those pink and clue cola bottle gummy sweets, not that I eat them, but still. It smells like them. It was about ÂŁ9 and I love it. I really love this brand.
I also very randomly brought myself an eye mask I have been laying down listening to audiobooks a lot recently and always end up throwing a t-shirt or something over my eyes so I decided to get myself an eye mask It is a really simple black, sculpted one and it was only 82p from amazon, so if I like it, I will get a better one, if I donât, I havenât lost a lot of money. Also, while looking for this only, I ended up uncovering a highly traumatizing area of amazon.
Next I went into Wilko and brought myself a couple of props for photos. I picked up two fake flowers. One is what was called a âpom pomâ flower. It is just a nice white, puffy flower. It was ÂŁ1 and I will be buying more of theseâŚ..one I figure out how the hell I am going to store them lol. I also picked up a little like bouquet style one. These are really yellow and just look brilliant. They where ÂŁ1.50 and again, I will probs get more of this style. I also picked up two packs of playing cards. They where ÂŁ1 a pack and just really simple, basic playing cards.
Next I went a little bit nail varnish mad. If you saw my Spring Nails post, then you would probably have seen these already. But from boots I picked up three Seventeen nail varnishes. They where 3 or ÂŁ3 so I decided to give them a go (in hind sight, they are very meh). I got the shades Khaki Green, Beige Nude and also Pale Green. I also ordered a new Barry M shade. I picked up one of the Frosted Cupcake range in the shade Earle Grey, this was ÂŁ2.99 and finally I also ordered a Tanya Burr shade. It is a matte one in the shade New Chapter and was ÂŁ2.49 I think.
Finally I also ordered myself another mug from Evie Bookish on Society 6. I ordered a Dorian Gray one, since I recently read the book and enjoyed it. It is a silhouette of Dorian with a quote inside it and is surrounded by flowers and feathers and the likes. The quote is âI am too fond of reading books to care to write themâ which I love. It is just so beautiful and looks brilliant on my shelf. There was 20% off at the time so I think it was around ÂŁ7.50 (it was dollars so Iâm not sure what the conversion at the time was).
And there we go. That is everything that I have brought over the last month or so. Quite a large variety of stuff, most of which I probably didnât need lol. Have you brought anything lately? I hope that you have enjoyed todayâs post and I will see you all again soon.
Collective Haul Hey Guys! Welcome back. Today I am doing another collective haul. I know I only posted one of these a couple of weeks ago, but I will be honest with you, I wrote that at the beginning of last month, so I have actually brought several things since then, so I thought that I would share them with you.

Week Three Pt. 1
Today in class:
Today Anna Brown came in a guest speaker to talk about publications that she had worked on as a designer. Her advice was useful for understanding how complex collaboration can get, and how to understand the viewpoint of a designer when making our own photographic publications. Since I studied design for a semester as well as taking some design/editorial focused courses, this wasnât too unfamiliar. Afterward, our group talked some more about our group theme and any developments in our individual projects.
For our group publication we listed our current thoughts around a group publication featuring our current projects:
âWe intend on making a physical publication, with two photography based projects and one video based project. The video project will exist in the book through inclusion of stills taken from the video alongside writing about the video.â - My notes
List of things we donât like with photo publications:
Michael:Â
Big ring binding, ringbind above A5, super thick card covers, dust jackets that fall off, bold colours, too many folding pages, double page spreads, very textured paper and stark white paper.
Me:
Big ring binding, massive impractical books, glossy materials, dust jackets that fall off or are ugly, bad typography and unnecessary features
Briarna:
Glossy paper, huge text, pure white paper, plain covers, staple binding, oversize books, lightweight text and harsh contrasts.
List of things we DO like:
Michael:
Flowing books without jumping pages, black and white, warm toned paper, well situated blank pages, subtle colours, full bleed next to white space, stick/sew binds, newsprint and hand written text.
Me:
Small-medium size books, card/fabric covers, polished constructions, good typography, good white space, good tactile feel, narratives/well ordered photographs and nice colour use/sequencing.
Briarna:
Textured covers, good image sequencing, colour with black and white (depending on images) and small-medium size books.
Developments in my project:
Iâve had some fresh ideas regarding my theme Iâll be addressing, as it was still unclear to me what exactly I wanted to be photographing specifically. It struck me when returning home from class, when one of my flatmates said that they had felt strange being home alone all day. I thought more into what it was exactly when I envisioned travel and adventure - what was a key aspect to how I imagined it? It was a retraction from everyday external pressures, a movement in a direction that was more pure and embracing of only being familiar with oneself.
When I think of the idea of being on oneâs own, which most people actually have time to experience, I see it as a chance for solitude - a chance to recollect and organise internal thoughts. Of course, this can also be a sign of overthought or isolation, but unfortunately this latter perception is the more often perceived notion of âalone timeâ, a negative or even selfish act in some cases (This is of course, my own perception of the topic, and some research into the subject matter just by talking to people might be helpful to see how this theory holds up collectively). In truth, a person who enjoys being on their own as well as others seems to be a signifier of a balanced and self-confident person, even if they naturally favour introverted or extraverted activities. Introversion as a topic could be interesting to begin pursuing, and I feel this will lead me to a more grounded project.
Further Research:
http://www.mankichi44.com/elimination-method/
Mankichi Shinshi - Elimination Method
In this series (which is very similar idealogically to what I will be doing), Shinshi frames individuals in their own space, or apparent headspace, and talks about how he feels that the individual is a precious being who in one-to-one contact with, have no majority vote over the other, and proposes that only by a process of elimination do we make sense of ourselves and each other in this world. The importance of the individual is exemplified well in the framing of each subject, who never seems to be aware of the photographerâs presence. Moreover, the space given to each subject suggest that each person resides in an internal world of their own.

Major Project Written Report  (word count: 1,988)
For my final major project I made a 94 page book of photographs that I took in a topographic-inspired series of abandoned homes across Ireland. This idea originally came to me in the summer just before the project started, whilst I was back home in Ireland and driving through Donegal, were in only an hour, saw over twenty different abandoned sites, without having particularly looked for them. I looked at the topographic work of Bernd and Hilla Becher and from these two inspirations, I wanted to do a Becher-style topology series documenting abandoned homes across Ireland, and in doing so, investigate my countryâs fascination with family history and blood-ties.
I was very conscious that I did not want these images to look like holiday-snaps in any way. That is why keeping the aesthetic of topology was appealing: to photograph all these different buildings across Ulster in their various forms of dilapidation and decay, but try to keep the frame and scale of the images the same throughout the series, alike how the Becherâs photographed industrial structures across Germany, keeping all the sites the same scale with minimalist presentation (see Figure 1). This enables the viewer to consider and admire the architectural structure of the building and remove any distraction in the background and focus on the build.
Figure 1 (Gas Tanks, Becher & Becher, 1973-2009)
Similarly, I liked the use of negative space in Christian Richterâs photo-essays of abandoned buildings across Europe (see Figure 2). Richterâs work made me think to not only maintain the typological style when shooting the houses themselves, but to then, in an almost forensic manner, collect more data about the site, photographing any remaining items from the house: artefacts and furniture and such, to paint a picture of what the home once was. Then, to take to the extreme the idea of series, collect and list the coordinates of where the photograph was taken, and the weather, the terrain, temperature, altitude, wind direction, and really serialize the site I was photographing. This took the topography theme to an extreme level, and would help paint a further picture of the location and atmosphere of where each of the photographs was taken. I wanted my images to be as minimal and categorical as possible, therefore, adding all this information would give the viewer a mental idea of the images on a greater scale.
Figure 2 (Kitchen, Richter, 2015)
Because I needed quite a few photographs (typography works better with volume) I needed a relatively large area in which to shoot, but not so large that too much time would be lost to traveling rather than shooting. The areas circled on the map (see Figure 3), counties Donegal, Fermanagh, Leitrim and Sligo was where I decided to shoot for these reasons:Â
1. I know the area very well and how to get around.
2. There are a lot of ruin and desolate sites of which I have scouted beforehand in this area of Ireland.
3. Itâs a very diverse landscape in a relatively small area of land, with mountains, plains, forests, loughs, bogland and coastline, therefore diverse because the structures were all built to withstand the landscape they are located in.
Figure 3 (Collis, photograph, 2017)
I knew there would be a lot of data involved in this project â and I would be on the road for all of it. I therefore decided to keep a journal with all the data noted in it with a map reference in order to remember which photograph was taken at which location. To make this easier, I also took my Polaroid 600 Coolcam to take a photograph of each location and keep with each data collection page, to help order information (see Figures 4 and 5).Â
Figure 4 (Collis, photograph, 2017)
Figures 5 (Collis, photograph, 2017)
One key change to my original brief was what precisely I was photographing. In the original brief I state that my intention was to photograph not only abandoned houses, but also abandoned âoutbuildings, farms, petrol stations, siloesâ (Collis, pg. 1, 2016). However, in the final book I presented for this project I only include houses because, although I did photograph abandoned shops, churches and farms, I found in editing that the series was far stronger when just confined down to homes. I also stated in my brief that I would list the data I collected in both Gaelic and English. However, I did not do this in the final book because I felt there was already enough information in just English, and about half of the place names did not translate to both languages. I furthermore, removed the data section âfamilyâ (Collis, pg. 1-2, 2016) because I could not get all the family names for every house, and moreover, from an aesthetic viewpoint, I had already given the location of the home and detailed images of it, so why not leave an air of mystery about the place? You can tell a lot about someoneâs heritage and family in Ireland by their surname, so why not leave some mystery and let the viewer guess from the photographs and information given who the owner of the house may have once been.
Another aspect of the project that transformed was the layout of the book. Although not specified in my brief what the final book would look like, I had discussed on my digital workbook early on that the final book was to be A4 and portrait, with the images sat in a fat white boarder to emphasise the minimalist theme, inspired by Richards Avedonâs book, âIn the American Westâ. However, after much editing and printing, I soon saw this didnât look right, so I went back to my data diary for inspiration. I liked the size and scrapbook feel of it. It became more and more appealing to be to produce an A5 landscape book instead of a large coffee table book. The photographs I took on this project are not grandiose or massive landscapes or giant buildings - they were never meant to be. They are hidden, intimate, quiet images of someoneâs once private home and objects within it, now lost by time and dilapidated. Therefore it would be wrong to display these images on a wall or on a large scale in a large book; there is something oddly perverse and unethical â in my opinion - about that: putting someoneâs lost private life up on a wall or in a grand book for all to see. It should be in a small, quiet book to relate to the images. I like the idea of someone having to physically take the book close to their eye, to peer up against the image to discover all the hidden details, rather than look at the images from afar on a large print. This idea came from the old convention of etching. The medium of etching was traditionally presented in the form of a small book that was handed around at the dinner table by gentlemen of high society â wannabe connoisseurs â to leaf through. I loved this idea of having this small book that one would hand around to leaf through and discover the hidden object and houses around Ireland, and with the coordinates next to the photographs, have this desire to go to these places and see these hidden ruins for oneself.
Other than these points discussed, the project pretty much remained how I originally intended and stated in my brief in 2016. This is because I was very sure of what I wanted to do for my final major project from when it was first initiated in 2016. This allowed me to make arrangements, book flights and organise everything quickly and be able to start shooting content in December (2016), which worked to my advantage, as I was able to collect a lot of content without having to rush, had plenty of editing time, and was allowed to adjust and experiment with layout and such. Therefore, the original idea and concept did not change dramatically at all, only miner details surrounding it and its presentation, showing â I think â the strength in my project.
In terms of dealing with issues during this project, I had to consider trespassing, because in Ireland â unlike Scotland â there are no Right To Roam laws. But I was lucky, because the owners of the land that I happened to meet on the road were incredibly friendly. Furthermore, some of them even gave me tip-offs for locations that I didnât know about, and each time this happened, it always paid off. I would never have even thought of Cleenish Island - one of my major locations for multiple sites - if one farmer who had a derelict in his field had not recommend it to me. Conversely, when it came to locations where there was no one about to give me permission, I just went for it and again was lucky.
A somewhat more serious issue than being chased by a farmer was possible finds in these derelict buildings. I was shooting predominantly on the boarder (see Figure 3), and in this area, arms and drug hauls have been found in abandoned houses relating to dissident activity. Recently and in the area I was shooting, an arms find was found were bomb making equipment, guns and ammunition were seized in an abandoned house in the woods, alike the kinds of houses I was photographing. These houses are often booby-trapped, so can be dangerous, and although we like to think of the IRA as a thing in our troubled past, dissident activity still goes on in the area I live and was photographing. Thusly, I was very careful before entering a building, and always travelled with an assistant to have a second party if anything went wrong.
On the subject of issues, when it came to costing, I had no money. I had been able to save ÂŁ600 to dedicate to this project (which may not sound like a lot, but was all I could dedicate). Therefore, coming in on budged â preferably under budget â was vital to me. When one goes off to photograph abroad, it usually cost a great deal, from travel, to accommodation, transportation, food, plus the expense of possibly having to go back to re-shoot. I got by this issue by choosing to photograph Ireland, because, although considered abroad from my university, I would be staying at my own home, eliminating any accommodation cost. I borrowed my motherâs car, reducing travel costs, and many of the locations were in hiking distance from my home, cutting more costs. From all these points, I was able to come in under budget (see Figure 6). I donât think this means I was cheap or didnât care about my project; nowadays photographers arenât often financed well for their projects, so one has to be clever about spending their money.
Figure 6 (Collis, photograph, 2017)
When I think about the future of this project and the fact that I have ÂŁ189.75 left over from my budget, I could put that money towards my Degree Show and having a larger, stronger bound version of my book publish to withstand many people leafing through it. Alternatively I could have two or three prints of some of the best images from the series printed for said show; one idea was to have a Damien Hirst inspired grid printed, will all the images of the houses placed on one print, alike Hirstâs spot prints (see Figure 7 & 8).
Figure 7 (Hirst, Abalone Acetone Powder, 1991)
Figure 8 (Collis, mock-up, 2017)
I could see this as a life long project, photographing abandoned homes all over Ireland â as I know I only scratched the surface. Knowing that I could get this many images of a good quality for less than ÂŁ500, I know I could continue shooting abandoned homes across Ireland for a similar cost as a prolonged project.

âThe Colour of Spaceâ - Printing (cont.)
Today (Tuesday 21st February 2017), I headed into UCA to try and get my book printed correctly so I can move on with the rest of the tasks I need to complete. I started by using the Print Booklet command in InDesign and printing my book in A4 size, at the time I thought doing both of these would sort out the problems I was having, but unfortunately I was wrong. The print quality was massively improved which I was happy to see, but the layout was still being printed incorrectly, with the reverse pages being printed upside down. I bound the book anyway and have kept it as development evidence. Below are images of this A4 print.
I tried to find a couple of online tutorials to try and fix this problem but I came up with nothing. So I went to speak with Rob Roach, one of my tutors from last year. He really knows what heâs doing when it comes to InDesign and printing, so I knew heâd be able to solve my problem. His fix was actually really simple, export the book as a PDF and print it from Adobe Acrobat. Surprisingly, this worked really well and it was super easy to do. I canât believe I didnât think of this simple fix but Iâm glad its finally all sorted. When it came to binding the book I decided to just stick two staples in the spine of the book, the only problem I had with this was getting the staples right in the middle of the book. With my first A5 print, I was off by just a few millimetres. Below are pictures of my A5 book.
My second and third prints were a lot more successful though, they came out perfectly and I managed to get the staples right in the middle of the spine. My second book will be used as development evidence, and my third book will be used as my final piece. Below are images of my second A5 book.

all-in-one planner can Track all your achievements and self-growth goals

Thoughts on the format of the final book
I like this idea of doing a landscape A5, postcard size, book instead of a coffee table book more and more. As I said in my last post, the photographs I took on this project are not grandiose and colossal; massive landscapes or giant buildings - they were never meant to be. They are hidden, lost, intimate, quiet photographs of someoneâs once private home and object within it, now lost by time and dilapidated. Therefore it would be wrong to display these images on a wall or on a large scale in a large book; their is something oddly perverse and unethical, to me, about that: putting someoneâs life up on a wall or in a grand book for all to see. It should be in a small, quiet book to relent the mood of the images; something that one could carry around like a diary, close and private to them. And, moreover, it works with this idea of âhiddenâ; these house were hidden all over the Irish landscape, and I had to go seek them out. Therefore, the details within the photographs should be to some extent hidden. I therefore like the idea of someone having to physically take the book close to their eye, to peer up against the image to see all the hidden details, rather than look at the images from afar on a large print.Â
This idea also ties up with the old convention of etching. The medium of etching was traditionally used as a small book or portfolio that was handed around at the dinner table by gentlemen of heigh society and connoisseurs of art to leaf through. Goya famously played with this concept when he created his Los Desastres de la Guerra (The Disasters of War) (ca. 1810), corrupting this traditionally appealing and peaceful medium by giving you the last thing you would wish to look at over dinner and smalltalk.Â
I like this idea of having this small book that one would hand around to leaf through and discover the hidden object and houses around Ireland. After all, the Instagram post (which I put on this blog before) showed that people donât necessarily know that there are all these places exist. So they can look through this small book and see what is out there in Ireland, lost and abandoned.Â
