In its construction the New York Central Railroad reused components from its Grand Central Station in NYC, which had been demolished prior to the 1913 opening of the current Grand Central Terminal.  The building was designed by New York architects Stem and Fellheimer.

The Fulton St El was built by the Kings County Elevated Railway Company and started service on April 24, 1888 from Fulton Ferry to Nostrand Ave. The Original Kings County Elevated Stations on Fulton St were at: Fulton Ferry, Brooklyn Bridge, (at or near Sands St) Tillary St, Court St, Boerum Pl, Elm Pl. Flatbush Ave, Lafayette Ave, Cumberland St, Vanderbilt Ave, Grand Ave, Franklin Ave and Nostrand Ave. In 1896, the KCERy built a short elevated line from Franklin Avenue and Fulton Street to connect to the tracks of the Brooklyn & Brighton Beach RR South of Atlantic Ave. The Kings County El was extended to Atlantic Ave in East New York in 1889. New stations were opened at; Brooklyn Ave, Albany Ave, Utica Ave, Ralph Ave, Saratoga Ave, Rockaway Ave Manhattan Jct and Atlantic Ave. Construction continued East and reached the Brooklyn city line at Grant Ave on December 28, 1893. New stations were opened at; Eastern Pkwy, Pennsylvania Ave, Van Sicklen Ave, Lynwood St, Montauk Ave, Chestnut St, Crescent St and The City Line at Grant Ave. Some time before 1899, the KCERR also built a stub terminal at Sands St. On May 24, 1900 the KCERR was merged into its competitor, the Brooklyn Union Elevated Railroad Company. The Fulton St El was electrified in 1900 and a ramp to the Brighton Line was built at Fulton & Franklin St. On July 9, 1900, Fulton St El trains began running over the Brooklyn Bridge to the Park Row Terminal in Manhattan. The BRT Brooklyn Fulton St El On September 25, 1915, The BRT Fulton St El was extended on Liberty Ave to Lefferts Ave in Queens. Six new stations that opened at; Hudson St (80th St), Boyd Ave (88th St), Rockaway Boulevard, Oxford Avenue (104th St), Greenwood Avenue (111th St) Lefferts Ave [Boulevard]. On April 24th, 1897, an incline from the Fulton Street El at Grant Avenue opened, permitting trolleys of the Long Island Electric Railway to operate up to the El level. This service ended four years later, on April 1st, 1901. On December 27, 1915, The Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company opened the new center track of the Fulton St El between Nostrand Ave and Atlantic Ave. On August 1, 1920, Fulton El through service to Coney Island from the Franklin Ave station ceased with the opening of the BRT Brighton Beach subway extension under Prospect Park. The BMT Brooklyn Fulton St El On July 23, 1934, The Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company (BMT) began regular service of the Green Hornet train on the #13 Fulton St El. The 'Green Hornet' was a five sectioned articulated car set specifically designed for elevated train service. On June 1, 1940, the downtown Brooklyn Fulton and 5th Ave Els stopped running.. The Fulton St El from the Sands St Terminal to Rockaway Ave was shut down. The 5th Ave El from the Sands St Terminal to 36th St was shut down. 5th Ave service from 36th St to Coney Island on the Culver El ended. The 3rd Ave El to Bay Ridge from 36th St was shut down. The famous crossing of the Fulton St El and 5th Ave El at Flatbush Ave would be removed in 1941. On June 16, 1941. Mayor Fiorello La Guardia presided at the official start of the demolition of the Fulton Street El.. Friday April 27, 1956 was the last day of BMT Fulton service from Rockaway Ave to Lefferts Blvd. On April 27, 1956, Service was discontinued on the BMT Fulton Street El between Rockaway Ave and 80th St (Hudson St). The following stations were closed: Rockaway Ave, Hinsdale St, Pennsylvania Ave, Van Siclen Ave, Linwood St, Montauk Ave, Chestnut St and Crescent St. The last #13 Fulton Street Local left Rockaway Avenue at 6:55 PM and arrived at Lefferts Boulevard at 7:17 PM. It left Lefferts Boulevard at 7:33 PM and arrived at Rockaway Avenue at 7:55 PM and consisted of C-Types 1504 and 1511. The last #13 - 14 Street-Fulton Street Express consisted of Multis 7011 and 7009 and arrived at Lefferts Boulevard at 7:01 PM. The outer section of the BMT Fulton St El was incorporated into the IND Fulton St Subway in 1956 and continues to the present time as the link to the Rockaway and Far Rockaway lines. The section of the El East of Hudson St to Lefferts Boulevard continues to be served by IND Fulton St Subway 'A' trains.

The original Grand Central Station in New York, circa 1902. Designed by railroad architect Gilbert Bradford, it was demolished in favor of the current Grand Central Terminal, which opened in 1913. According to the Book Utica, A City Worth Saving, components of the above building were reused in the construction of Utica’s Union Station which opened in 1914.
