I don’t mean to create a straw man, but when people attack Lyanna by stating she ‘should’ve done her duty,’ they are, frankly, advocating for her to have been raped.
However, I doubt that group is ready to have this conversation.
#it’s very thematically consistent that roberts rebellion ended in the horrific rape of elia martell and the murder of her children#the rebels were actually the champions of the status quo#< that statement was a simplification but i think it’s generally true#it’s most likely that lyanna’s ‘disappearance’ was her last ditch effort to avoid her arranged marriage and rhaegar ended up helping her#then metaphorical punishment strikes like lightening and rhaegar’s family is horribly murdered and his city viciously sacked in response#it’s a fitting ending to a conflict in a world that’s backwards and cruel and sets the thematic undertone of the new monarchy and westeros#however#there’s just not enough info on what went down before the rebellion to build up a ‘one true’ narrative about it#technically sleeping with robert would be considered lyanna’s ‘duty’ and wouldn’t be called rape but read cersei’s chapters—#—and you’ll know where the author and narrative stand on husbands ‘taking their rights’: it’s that this is sanctioned rape.#asoiaf fandom critical#anti elia stans#lyanna stark#rhaelya#rhaegar targaryen#le sigh… fandoms
