More than once he finds himself considering the table salt, and the glass of clear tap water beside it. Overcome by the insane urge to spill one into the other and gulp it down in one fell swoop.

To eat salt like he belongs in it.

This, of course, would be absurd, and so he doesn’t. But the thought of it is soothing nonetheless. Of shedding one mortal shell to slip into another.

Or perhaps that is the point. That one of them isn’t a mortal shell. The sea seems eternal like that.

Either way, it would certainly be better than sorting through this mess of data.
