How am I only just now getting that Persephone in Hadestown the musical is like. So her husband Hades is the company town CEO who works everyone to the bone but Persephone participates just as much by selling the workers happiness (which in the literal sense is booze but in the metaphorical sense is sunshine, moonlight, flowers—the things she’s the goddess of but which also bring people happiness). Like Hades is the one actively crushing people but she’s the one keeping them there in the infinite downward spiral of capitalism. it’s SUCH a good metaphor

#and like. their whole relationship as characters where they’ve fallen out of love but she can’t leave #and how they start to fall in love again when Orpheus shows them that life is about more than profit and survival #it’s such a hopeful twist to the usual tragic telling of the story. capitalism’s grip is broken when we remember to hope #and stand in solidarity with each other #I didn’t like this musical the first few times I listened to it (aside from the music which SLAPS)#but every time I listen to it it grows on me a little more #I do still have some complaints but honestly it’s such a genius allegory #hadestown
