Coffee or Tea
Bill Hader x (F) Reader
Warnings: N/A
“Guys guys!” John smiles walking into the SNL set catching all his friends’ attention. “I’d like to introduce you guys to a close friend of mine”
“And mine. Don’t exclude me like last time Mulaney” Kristen smiles joining them with said friend, Y/N. “This is Y/N, and she’s the newest member to our SNL family”
“Hey” Y/N smiles waving at the ones she doesn’t know.
“Go ahead and introduce yourself to people Y/N, I gotta go check the schedule for this upcoming Saturday”
“Alright” Y/N smiles as Kristen left her but John was still around in case she needed a buffer of some sorts.
Bill quickly pulled John over before Y/N can introduce herself to him. John was confused with what Bill was doing but thinking ahead-
“Do you not like her already?” Okay, not exactly what Bill expected to come out of John’s mouth.
“I wouldn’t assume John”
“Then. What other reason did you pull me away for?”
“I-...God I don’t even know” Bill let go of John’s arm as Y/N headed over to the two with a smile on her face.
“Hey uh. John I’m gonna step out for a quick minute. Call me if you need me” Y/N was about to just walk passed Bill when she stops. “Uh. They’ve always introduce me to new people instead of having me do it myself so. Hey” she smiles at Bill as he couldn’t help but return it.
“Bill Hader”
“Yeah, I know you from a mile away Hader” Y/N smirks before going to do her thing.
Bill felt his heart racing as John watches the tips of his ears turn red. He snickers to himself getting a death stare from Bill.
“What? Do you want me to tell you she’s a fan of your work or something? Jesus Bill” John laughs going to find Kristen to go over a skit he had in mind.
After a while they were all sat around the table pitching ideas and agreeing on most. Y/N was the newest and mainly was only going to be placed where she needed to be. Bill kept watch her nursing her drink as she wrote down notes on the skits that had him in it. John sat with her looking over what she was writing and he agreed with a few things. Bill wouldn’t stop thinking about what kind of character Y/N is. A fan? Another critic? Or just a person he’s got his eyes set on? Honestly could be all three. Since he knows she’s an actor or writer. A friend of friends. A sweet person just by aura. When the meeting was over, Kristen walked Y/N out as Bill once again grabbed John pulling him over and this time John tried to fight back by grabbing onto Fred who instantly gave in.
“John I swear-“
“Bill you need to stop pulling me over. You’re not a cop and I’m not a speeder”
“You does that one time with me in the car-“
“FRED SHUT UP” John lets go of Fred as he turns around to see Bill freaking out a bit.
“Is this about Y/N?”
“OH THANK GOD” John pushes Bill off of him before forcing Fred in front of him. “Talk to him about it”
As John left, Bill gave Fred one of those looks as he rolls his eyes.
“You can get her coffee and start a conversation Bill. It’s not that hard”
“But it is that hard. It’s been a while since I’ve asked anybody out, let alone flirt. I’m just one big goof ball”
“And you think she...doesn’t like goof balls? And not everybody knows how to flirt Bill. Honestly” Fred laughs walking away as Bill quickly follows beside him not understand what he’s about to do.
“We’ll see you Saturday Y/N” Kristen cheers before leaving as Y/N grabs her bag about to go when Fred tapped her shoulder.
Y/N turns around with a smile. “Sup guys”
“Hey Y/N, would you like to get coffee with Bill and I tomorrow when we discuss a skit?”
“I uh. Don’t drink coffee-“
“Hmm. Well the nearest coffee house probably has tea”
“Well that sounds good to me. Cool if we meet...around 10?”
“Sounds good to us!” Fred smiles as Y/N looks over at a nervous Bill before reassuring with a smile.
“See you tomorrow” Y/N leaves the two as Fred pats Bill’s back.
“Don’t flake. Because I am” Fred smiles patting Bill’s shoulder before leaving him alone to process.
The next day came quickly as Bill didn’t know how to dress besides his usual button down with his sleeves rolled up and jeans. As he got closer to the coffee house he spots Y/N in a deep red flannel and skinny jeans. Jesus. The observation he has.
“Hey Hader”
“Hey Y/N, you look...nice”
“Thanks. So do you”
“Bringing back flannels into fashion?”
“Excuse me? Who said they ever left” Y/N smiles catching a laugh from Bill which made her blush a bit.
“So, Uh shall we?” Bill smiles watching her nod, he got the door for her taking a deep breath as she walks in.
The two stood in front of the counter as Y/N smiles nudging Bill.
“Coffee or tea?”
“Well coffee for me...and tea for you?”
“Yeah, um. I’ll take a green tea and what’ll you have?” Y/N looks at Bill after giving her order to the barista.
“Uh a cappuccino, and I’ll pay”
“Hey no, I got it. You can take care of the next time” Y/N smiles paying for them both as Bill walks over to where they get handed off.
Y/N was about to join him when her phone was blowing up. She waved for Bill’s attention catching it and pointing at her phone to take a call. He smiles to reassure that he knows what she’s doing. As Y/N walks out she immediately took the call and Bill watches her look annoyed for a second before laughing. Someone is making her happy.
“KRISTEN I SWEAR TO GOD”
“What?! I was curious how it’s going!”
“Well—I just bought our drinks”
“Y/N WHY DID YOU PAY!”
“Because I got nervous and said I would”
“Oh my god. You are so dumb” Kristen laughs on the other line looking at Fred across from her as he was texting Bill.
Bill: Someone is making her smile
Fred: And you automatically think it’s her boyfriend or some shit? She’s single
Bill: How do you know??
Fred: Uh
Fred: Sources
Bill: Fred
Fred: What? I don’t reveal my sources
Bill: THEN WHY IS SHE LAUGHING AND SHIT
Fred: I don’t know!
Kristen looks at the texts before laughing making Y/N even more confused which lead to her eventually ending the call.
“Oh shit. She hung up”
“Okay okay hold on” Fred finishes a text to Bill with the ending of you’re on your own and then setting his phone down. “Why are we doing this?”
“Because. I think they look cute together. But they both need a push into the deep end”
“If they panic you know they’ll call us”
“Mm. Bill would call me and Y/N wouldn’t call anybody. How much you want to bet on that?”
“Ten bucks”
“Ah hell no. Fifty”
“That’s an extreme for a blind first date”
“But you have the fifty”
“Fine fine” Fred shakes Kristen’s hand.
Meanwhile...
“So, Fred is obviously not coming” Y/N laughs before taking a sip of her tea.
“Yeah, he also kinda had the paper copy of the skit” Bill says calmly as he held his coffee.
“Uh Huh” Y/N smiles. “Glad he’s not coming...”
“Really?”
“Yeah, Uh Sorry if that sounded weird”
“If we’re being honest, I uh. Kinda wish I just had the guts to ask you out instead of having Fred help me”
“Well...” Y/N smiles as she started blushing over the fact that he said that. “If you...ever want to ask me out, without saying anything. You could just bring me tea. Whenever”
“I’ll keep that noted” Bill smiles.
——
“That was a successful night for SNL, now I’m tired as hell so I’ll catch you all later” John laughs grabbing his bag as Bill looked around for Y/N before stopping John. “Yeah?”
“You seen Y/N?”
“She usually hangs outside after acting. It gets hot in the building Bill” Kristen answers for John as he only agreed.
“It’s also...very cold out” John smiles adding that before leaving.
After getting a few things, Y/N flinches to the sudden noise to the back door opening. She looks over seeing Bill which always brought a smile to her face.
“Hey Hader”
“Hey Y/N”
Y/N moves over so Bill could sit with her, and when he did, he handed her a cup. She laughs a bit opening the lid and taking a sip.
“They only got Irish Breakfast here, sorry if it’s not exactly the green tea of your liking”
“It’s the thought that counts right?”
“Right”
Y/N looks over at Bill before leaning in and kissing his cheek. She smiles watching his face turn red as she rests her head on his shoulder.
“So, can I take you out tomorrow?”
“Yeah, you can”

the thing journal, 6.18.2017 - 6.24.2017
the things i watched or listened to last week. in this post: i’ll keep you in mind, from time to time; the bridge; henri; under your spell; the last man on earth; beautiful thugger girls; into the maelstrom; makes me sick; truth is a beautiful thing; blind; the taking of pelham one two three; big fish theory; wolves
1) I'll Keep You in Mind, from Time to Time, by Moose Blood: One day I'll remember to write down what I think about an album when I listen to it on my computer and I literally have WordPad open in another visible window. It was a great time, it's a dope emo album and I'm the sort of person that will listen to emo in 2017 and describe it as "dope," and I apologize we're starting this off with me forgetting how I reacted to something.
2) The Bridge, dir. Eric Steel: a wonderful documentary about the golden gate bridge and the people who use it! you and your family will never look at the full house credits the same way again! This is a difficult film to review because it's a difficult film to watch. There is footage of people jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge, there are interviews with people who either knew someone who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge or, in one instance, are someone who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge, the throughline of the film is someone pacing back and forth along the bridge, struggling with the decision, not sure what they want to do. It's a brutal watch. And it has to be, it would have been irresponsible if this film tried to romanticize suicide, if it tried to present the jumpers as heroes flying to freedom. The people being interviewed say the jumpers were trapped in the prisons of their own heads, never quite found stability in this world, but those people are also clearly affected by the choice the jumpers made, are left wondering or, worse, knowing what they could have done better.
3) Henri, dir. Yolande Moreau: gpsh this movie took forever to get where it needed to go, and then when it got there, it didn't really do anything. i dunno, i guess i just never got on its level. i never quite figured out if the dude's relationship with the butterfly was condescending or creepy or if i was meant to think it was adorable that this mess of a man kept hanging out with the poor young woman, i could never tell if the film was sympathetic to its characters or if i was meant to laugh at those pitiful souls (it's a french film, so probably "laugh at" more than “laugh with”), and it didn't seem to take any of its characters problems seriously. i dunno, it just didn't seem like a film that needed to be made, it didn't seem to be saying anything about friendship or society or whatever, it just presented some idiots and said "make of this what you will." maybe i'm missing something, but i don't think i am? (also i signed up for Mubi. this is worth mentioning, that i signed up for a service that will present me with various foreign films and documentaries, so. look out for that, i guess.)
4) Under Your Spell, by The Birthday Massacre: shout outs to everyone who listened to this band because of game grumps There are moments on this album I can only describe as nu-metally; there are instrumental breaks on "Counterpane" that sound directly lifted from mainstream rock radio in 2003, straight-up Chevelle vibes in 2017. What The Birthday Massacre understands, though, is that 2003 has a place in 2017, and that's as color to the 1980s, and they somehow use buttrock to make their Depeche Mode-y song more interesting, feel different than it had on Superstition. The Birthday Massacre know how to make great rock songs, and it's so nice to know music like this is still being made in 2017. (Words used in this review include "nice" and "interesting." I swear I'm trying.)
5) The Last Man on Earth s2, cr. Will Forte: Binging this show may be a mistake, since the main character is so misanthropic and gross and none of the characters are good people. (Except Carol, who is trying her best all the time to just be as darn nice as possible, Kristen Schaal kinda carries this show.) It's not that I'm not impressed by this show, it's a really solid show, I just question whether I'm enjoying it. Or maybe I'm just not paying attention, I dunno, we've been over how bad I am at watching things. I loved the integration of Jason Sudeikis into the group and thought he and Will Forte played well as a successful younger brother and fuck-up older brother, like the perfect use of Jason Sudeikis is as a handsome and charming foil to a Will Forte type, and I liked Todd's slow evolution into a legit jerk, it's good! I like it! I shouldn't be consuming this in one gulp.
6) Beautiful Thugger Girls, by Young Thug: The Young Thug brand of trap is my preferred brand, for two reasons. One, Young Thug has an insane voice, and I don't mean that his songs are written from the vantage point of a crazy person, I mean that Young Thug makes these fucking mouthnoises that I was unaware a human could make. Every Young Thug song is an exploration of what his vocal chords can create. Two, Young Thug doesn't just make trap. There's a strong sense of artistic identity on his records, and that lets him play around in other genres, like, there's legit country influence on this record. It's not as towering a work as Jeffery, but few things in this world are; this is Young Thug taking some time to figure out the places he can take himself, and it is a thrill to listen to him explore his abilities.
7) Into the Maelstrom, by Bigelf: There comes a time when you need to set aside ego, forget whatever goals you've set, and admit that something is beyond your ken. I stopped listening to this halfway through. It's a prog album that didn't even have an incredible opener, just an okay one, and the rest I found interminable. I thought we were compatable. Y'know? I usually like prog. I usually like albums that start with a song called "Incredible Time Machine" and follow that up with "Hypersleep." But, like, I dunno, this just wasn't fun to listen to, like, there's no acknowledgement that "Incredible Time Machine" is a silly thing to name a song. My favorite prog bands are aware of how nonsense prog is and embrace it, but this took itself a tad too seriously for my liking. Which isn't to say it wasn't good, just that I didn't want to spend more time in this space, like by the time you get to the third six+-minute-long song of the album, you realize this is time you could've spent listening to "Style" on repeat, or something.
8) Makes Me Sick, by New Found Glory: Yes hello hi welcome to The Thing Journal, where we review French cinema and New Found Glory albums like they're the same thing. For me, current New Found Glory is like finding a sweater I haven't worn in months, putting it on, feeling insanely good about how I look in that sweater, and then not wearing that sweater for another year. It's a comfortable and uncomplicated album, like hell yeah, I'm here for a song about staying indoors during the summer, you made this song just for me!
9) Truth Is a Beautiful Thing, by London Grammar: Early frontrunner for The Hotelier Award for "Album I Don't Completely Understand But Am Aware Moved Me Deeply." Like, you know that Parks & Rec episode, where Tom commissions an abstract art piece, and as he stares at $20 of art, he realizes he's deeply affected by the way the shapes interact and flow, but can't describe what he's feeling or what he's looking at? That's how I feel listening to this album. I don't know what it is about this particular brand of ethereal dream-like pop that left me floored on the bus ride home, I don't know what I actually felt as the woman crooned over the simple-but-expansive soundscapes, but here I am, trying to figure out what I listened to ("simple-but-expansive soundscapes" is the fifth draft of that phrase) and what emotion was stirred within me. This was so cool. How is it so cool? Ugh I hate that I keep complaining about how I'm bad at describing music but Criticism Santa never ever visits MY TREE'S UP, DUDE. I'M WAITING. WE CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN AT ANY POINT.
10) Blind, by Eskil Vogt: I think I got half an hour deep into this film when I realized I wanted to see this again. The way this film plays with the reality of blindness, how it gives you the sense of the main character's read of the situation before she hears a noise and realizes there's something different entirely, it's just so fucking cool. It reminded me a lot of Charlie Kaufman, and while I can't be 100% sure it's a warranted comparison and not a comparison I'm making because I have a limited frame of reference, but just the way it explored the blind woman's mind, how the story she was writing changed as she felt worse about her blindness, how she got crueler and crueler to the blind character as she felt worse and worse about herself, the way this film dissected loneliness, it's all these things I've come to associate with Kaufman and all these things I love to see in film. It's such a quality film, legit my only gripe is that everyone talked so low and softly, I honestly couldn't tell if the film was going for a low-key vibe or if the Norwegian language is just people muttering at and somehow understading each other. So it's entirely possible my main problem with this film is the Norwegian language, which honestly sounds like a mess, what's up Norway, how come none of y'all enunciate.
11) The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, dir. Joseph Sargent: I don't usually like things about New York City because 50% of all things are set in New York City and it's really hard to use New York City in a unique way. Everything is set in New York City, y'know? I more than understand that New York City is the greatest city in the world. The other 7000 TV shows I have seen about New York City have made this abundantly clear, I don't necessarily need you to chime in on this front. This film, though, this film is awesome. This was like the thing I kept wanting Brooklyn Nine Nine to be, a thriller with incredible comedy, like this is straight-up the funniest film I've seen in weeks (Bob we know what you've been watching you haven't seen a comedy in weeks we don't think) shhhhhhhAnd the comedy is mostly derived from the way the film uses New York. At the outset, no one is as concerned about the people on the train than about how the trains aren't running on time, like it's way more important that the subway runs on schedule than it is that the train not get hijacked. Like, so many people in this film treat this like just another day of New York's bullshit, the research department taking as long as they usually do to create the list of names, traffic impeding the delivery of money to the train. I loved it so so much.
12) Big Fish Theory, by Vince Staples: Vince Staples is a rapper whose projects demand attentive listening, multiple listens to grasp everything that he's going for, so of course I listened to this once on a walk and am throwing it in between a 40-year-old movie and an okay punk album. I have no doubt that the second listen will be rewarding, that I'll unlock what's great about this album and connect to it, and it's not like I didn't enjoy my first listen, Vince Staples is great at what he does and makes music that can be enjoyed even when being skimmed through, but there's so much going on, abrasive dark production and meticulously crafted lyrics, that I know I didn't catch everything. I caught a lot -- imagine not immediately understanding like "BagBak" is going for -- but Vince Staples is on that Kendrick/Danny Brown/RTJ level where he makes work that demands its audience's full attention while still being something the audience can enjoy.
13) Wolves, by Rise Against: The album opens with "Light all the torches and wake up the King/The smoke you've ignored is a flame you can't contain," which is a predictable way for Rise Against to say "I told you so," but, as previously discussed, Rise Against has as much of a right as anyone to say "I told you so" a thousand times. The main problem I have with this album is that it doesn't feel markedly different from the rest of their catalogue. There isn't any acknowledgement that there's more of a sense of urgency in these times than there was previously -- things were still bad in the last few years, but it wasn't "let's elect a monster" bad -- but Rise Against is putting out the same album they've always put out, fire and brimstone here, glossy pop-influenced single material there, the only difference being that they'll now acknowledge that they've always been right. Like, it might have been worth exploring the space they glimpsed on "Bullshit," which is a song where they are 100% excoriating their listener base for not doing enough ("Oh no, please don't life a finger, don't get up, just sit right there/Don't worry about the thoughts inside your pretty little head"), try to analyze the current situation so that, when Rise Against says it's time to fight, there's actual strategy involved? But this is fine, standard Rise Against is usually fine. Ugh, the Trump administration isn't even leading to better punk music, THEY SAID THE MUSIC WOULD BE BETTER. WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO MY SILVER LINING.

Clayray Closeout 2016
Oops, I was too busy celebrating New Year to post about these. I’ve tracked my music tastes using Last.fm for ages and had posted about my top tracks each year for the past 5 years, so here we go again. But first!
Music - Artists
Glass Animals
Beyoncé // Britney Spears
Secret
Civil Twilight
Jeon Hyosung
Tegan and Sara
Heather Maloney
Jesse & Joy
Sonamoo
I got really into Glass Animals this year. I had first heard them back in 2013, but their most recent album How To Be a Human Being (which you will soon see is very high on my albums list this year) really snagged my interest. I saw them live in September and was in the Top 1% of listeners on Spotify this year, so yeah, I was in deep. Not only do they make fantastic music, they are adorable British boys and I also just love how the album was such a fully engrossing creative project for them with other offshoots in different media.
I also saw Civil Twilight and Heather Maloney live, which is why they’re so high on the list. I almost went to see Jesse & Joy this year, but didn’t end up getting to go, but their album from late 2015 was great. In addition, I saw Aaron Tveit in concert, but considering that a lot of his music is ensemble work from musicals, they don’t scrobble as him individually, so he’s not on this list. There was a lot of Aaron Tveit this year, lol. I went to New York a bunch this year with my new roommate, and so after seeing him in concert, we went to NYC for a gala thing that he was also at. And I spoke to him!
Secret hit their 7th anniversary and then Sunhwa left the group, so there has been a lot of reminiscing about the last seven years and also, in a way, mourning the loss of the OT4. As Admin of Secret4Times, obviously this hit me pretty hard. But, looking forward to what’s next in store for Secret, and also for solo efforts. Hyosung’s solo album this year was excellent, landing her at #5 on this list. I actually am usually slightly biased towards Jieun, but her solo album came out later this year and actually I found it weaker than her previous albums (though I love I Wanna Fall In Love) so you don’t see her here.
Other music trends with me that aren’t necessarily reflected here: Went to the World Figure Skating Championships this past year and was there for the ShibSibs’ heartachingly beautiful Fix You in person and words can’t even express how much the emotion of it just filled me up. Also, what with Sing Street (which will you see on the Albums list below) and Stranger Things, there was a lot of 80′s in my life. I also went to the opera twice this year, The Merry Widow and Carmen, so I have felt quite cultured.
Music - Albums
Beyoncé - Lemonade
Glass Animals - How To Be a Human Being
Jeon Hyosung - Colored
Sonamoo - I Like U Too Much
Tegan and Sara - Love You To Death // Sing Street - Sing Street (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Royal Pirates - 3.3
Yuna - Chapters
Rooney - Washed Away
Glen Hansard - Music from the Motion Picture Once
Look, of course Lemonade is #1. Obviously. What more is there to say.
Most of these albums are recent releases by artists that I have been a fan of for a while. I have generally liked Tegan and Sara, but this album is just chock full of great, incredibly catchy songs. Many of the other tracks on that album almost made my top tracks list. On kinda the other end of the spectrum, I really enjoyed Yuna’s and Rooney’s albums, but it is more of a general wash of appreciation, rather than certain standout tracks.
I’d been a fan of Royal Pirates since their rock covers of Super Junior days, but to be honest, many of their actual releases up until this hadn’t quite made it into my heart. This album, though, finally crossed over that threshold for me.
This year I watched a lot of movie musicals. I’m generally a fan of musicals and a fan of movies, so there ya go. You can see the Glen Hansard ones - Sing Street and Once - both made this list because they had the advantage of being viewed earlier in the year. But I also watched Grease Live (TV not film in a way but whatevs), The Song (LOL does this count? This Christian kinda-musical drama was a fun watch with Sarah), 2gether (Also not exactly counting, but I’m being broad in my categorizing here), The Music Man (a rewatch obviously), Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical, The Last Five Years, La La Land, Sweeney Todd, and my Christmas rewatch of In the Good Old Summertime. I did listen to more 2gether and if La La Land had been out earlier, I would definitely have more listens to that soundtrack. Speaking of movies...
Movies
Now I don’t watch movies multiple times like I listen to music over and over again, so this is a subjective ranking and not numbers-based. I’m also only going to do Top 5 because I watch far fewer current movies as they are released than listen to music and also because I am tired lol.
La La Land I saw La La Land in a free preview and it is so so delightful. Another one of those movies that I came out of thinking, this is the culmination of everything that Clara loves. Except if I think about it more in-depth and critically, I get mad about the problematic mansplaining, white-splaining Ryan Gosling character (Shouldn’t have read that article), but as an experience, it just inspired wide-eyed splendor. Damien Chazelle went to Harvard, y’know, and I didn’t know this until recently, but he was in Chester French, and I’m friends with D.A. Wallach from Chester French on Facebook so I’m basically like two degrees away. Also I know someone from college who was like the assistant to one of the producers of this! So a lot of Harvard-ness around this, I guess.
Ghostbusters I didn’t see Ghostbusters in theatres, which I regret, but I saw it on a plane recently and it was so so great. Badass ladies were great, the humor was great, the theme song is forever great.
Zootopia I care a lot about children’s media and Zootopia deftly demonstrates how children’s media is so significant and meaningful for everyone. I thought it was going to be a cute animated movie and it was, but it delivered nuance and message in that cute animated package.
Train to Busan I watched Train to Busan only like a week ago with my family over the holidays. It’s an excellent zombie movie with some emotional heft to it, thanks to the always great Gong Yoo, and also I just marveled at the visual effects of the zombies just piling on top of each other.
The Handmaiden For some reason, I had gone into The Handmaiden thinking it was a Victorian lesbian vampire thriller. There are no vampires involved, and I honestly waited the entire time for them and was baffled. I went by myself to a screening at the Brattle and it was one of those things where I was like, is it weirder if I go by myself or is it weirder to ask someone to go with me? But anyway, it’s a lushly beautiful movie and I’m glad I got to see it.
Television
Signal This was actually really really tough between the top three shows. Signal won out in the end because of its tight plotting and emotional impact. It is def not a happy show, by any means, (really. NOT a happy show) but it is certainly engrossing and amazingly well-crafted.
Speechless The power of this show, on the other hand, is how light and happy it is. Micah Fowler is so sassy and the show overall is supremely funny.
Insecure As I said, it was really really tough to decide about placement for these top three shows. I had watched a little bit of Awkward Black Girl so I knew that Issa Rae was great, but this show is even greater than expected. The stories are so real and the performances are excellent.
The Good Place I don’t know how this happened but I guess I’m more into comedy now? I’m usually more of a drama kind of gal, bonus points if there is death involved. I guess this show does involve death, though, and it also has Kristen Bell so that works out? This show indulges in a little more silliness, which I appreciate.
The Wine Show Not a scripted show, but this show earns this place because it is just a ridiculous thing that it exists. Literally it’s just about Matthew Goode and Matthew Rhys sitting around and talking about wine. Well, they go on like missions or whatever, but that’s basically it. I found out about this earlier in the year, I think, I remember talking about it at the airport on our way to some tour stop, and then after Harvard-Yale, started watching it a bit with Raafi and Zuzanna. I’m all about educational television made entertainment, so this is great.
The above list is of new shows that premiered in 2016, but there were also some other fantastic shows that I watched in 2016.
I got really really into the Norwegian show Skam over the holidays. I had been meaning to watch it for a while, because it is a teen drama! Exactly the kind of show I like! I marathoned it all during the break. The second season is the weakest (I have my qualms about the trite plot devices and it made me like Noora less than I did, which made me very sad), but the first and third seasons are excellent. The protagonist of the first season, Eva, developed so real-ly and it was this development that gave what the best teen dramas offer. I love the Russ Group Girl Squad, and so in a way was a bit sad that S3 didn’t focus on them quite as much, but Isak’s story was done so so well.
Also in 2016, I started watching Alias, Fresh Meat, Superstore, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend... And I watched the French show Les Revenants which is SO SO GOOD. Another big TV thing for me this year was The Bachelor franchise. I had somehow gone 26 years without ever watching anything in the franchise, despite my unabashed enjoyment of dating shows, and I got sucked in this year. Like really sucked in.
I also finished my Veronica Mars rewatch as my gym TV show and for a hot second tried to watch The Wire as my next gym TV show. That was a bad idea. I have since switched over to Gilmore Girls. I haven’t finished that rewatch yet, so obviously hadn’t finished before watching the revival series.
Alrighty, I have now egotistically reflected on my tastes of the year. Onto the next!
