Daily fish fact #279
Great lanternshark!
Their name comes from the fact that they were thought to be bioluminescent! They can be found anywhere between 300 and 4000 meters deep.

Daily fish fact #271
Ribbon eel!
Ribbon eels have vastly different colourations based on their age and biological gender! Young individuals are jet black with a yellow dorsal fin, adult males are bright blue with yellow accents (pictured above) and adult females are pure yellow! It's suspected that these eels also change their sex from male to female, which means that an eel could go through all three colourations!
Below is a young individual and a female individual!

Daily fish fact #226
Opah!
Opahs, also known as moonfishes, are the only truly warm-blooded fish! Their entire body temperature is consistently 5 degrees Celsius warmer than the waters they live in, which is a feature no other fish has. The opah uses this feature to their advantage by being able to hunt in very deep water for long periods of time without a need to warm themselves up in the surface waters!

Daily fish fact #218
Whale shark!
Whale sharks have over 300 rows of tiny teeth! They don't use these teeth for anything, as these sharks are filter feeders. A whale sharks' mouth is also at the very front of its head, which is unusual for sharks!

Daily fish fact #278
Barreleyes!
They have barrel-shaped tubular eyes, which are enclosed inside their head under a layer of transparent soft tissue! They use their peculiar eyes to look for prey that might be floating directly above them; they live deep underwater just at the edge of where light penetration ends, but thanks to their eyes with a large number of rods (a type of photoreceptor) they can see very well into the waters above.
