I have a pretty shoddy memory and I’m not about to fine-tooth comb seasons 4 and 11 to find hardcore evidence for any of this, but I feel like you could draw a connection between aspheera and clouse’s “sorcery/dark magic” stuff somehow. It makes certain things connect and bit more and make a bit more sense, at least to me.
Like, the magic stuff in season 4 definitely comes out of nowhere. We already have elemental powers, but apparently “magic” is a thing? Different magic than the stuff we’re already used to?? Feels kinda out of place. And apparently one of the spells Clouse can do just so happens to turn people into Anacondrai—well that’s just totally random, the writers are just making shit up at this point. If this kind of magic existed, we would have seen it by now.
Except we wouldn’t have, because the ones who created and practiced that magic were nearly wiped out before the events of the show even started—the serpentine.
When season 11 comes along, we learn about Aspheera, and about how a suuuuper long time ago, back when ninjago was practically brand new, there was such a thing as a serpentine “sorcerer,” who served at the side of the king. Obviously things have changed since ancient times, and that stuff doesn’t really exist anymore. It might make sense for Chen to be into that sort of thing; he was a huge weeb for snakes after all. He might’ve encouraged Clouse to study ancient serpentine magic stuff in order to feed his inner snake-weeb. (I don’t remember if we ever got a real explanation for why Clouse was into the magic stuff umm. Just feel free to correct me if any of this sounds dumb idk!!)
I just think it’s interesting how a possible reason we never heard of the sorcery stuff before season 4 is because it’s been a couple thousand years since it was prevalent and also in part because of. Y’know. Serpentine war.
(Also I wasn’t like, super hardcore paying attention during season 11, so I’m just tacking this onto the end here: were the serpentine all united in Aspheera’s time? Did the 5 tribes thing come later, like they split up somehow?? Is that how it worked???? Cuz if so, that could lead to some cool lore implications— like, they started with one type of sorcery, but then when the tribes split up, different “subsets” and “specializations” started popping up. Maybe Clouse doesn’t just practice serpentine sorcery, but specializes in Anacondrai sorcery…. or smthn)
