i’m literally about to go to sleep but i started thinking about L. more specifically L in my longfics.
i’ve realized that, even if they’re in drastically different situations, L in habromania and L in true successor are still the same character. light, misa, matsuda, and literally everyone else was changed, but L wasn’t.
so, i raise you this: habromania is the timeline where ryuk never lost the bet. L never died, beyond never got broken out of prison, and the kira case hit a dead end due to L’s lack of motivation. then, years later, he finds himself with light. and they both help each other to grow into better people through the power of their adorable daughter. or something.
i want to find a way to incorporate this into hab. i have a solid idea and i think you guys will really like it.
#vari posting#habromania#true successor#because i’m starting to write part two#where there’s far more L pov#and honestly#the guilt this man holds for the first generation of wammys is just#man#it’s honestly so depressing looking at how true successor went#he works through it though#just#i’m at the point where it’s at its worst#and it hurts to write#can’t imagine how hard it’ll be to read#lmao

A Baratheon sits on the Iron Throne and Daenerys, Queen of Meereen and the Bay of Dragons, must decide how to move forward.
Daenerys & Jon (Stannis Won AU)
Daenerys stared after her supposed nephew, still deep in thought.
"You can't honestly be thinking of agreeing with him." The voice jolted her and she turned, watching as Jon came from the shadow behind her throne he tended to settle in. "You have a kingdom to rule here."
"A Baratheon sits on the throne, our family's throne, doesn't that bother you at all?"
"Stannis Baratheon. As far as I'm aware, he spent all of the Rebellion in Storm's End and had nothing to do with any of the battles or the Sack."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "Is that true or just what your uncle taught you?"
"It's true, your grace." Ser Barristan took a few steps closer, looking between them. "And the enmity between he and Robert was well-known. Robert gave Storm's End to Renly when it should have gone to Stannis and passed over him for Hand, as well."
That did make her feel slightly better, knowing that the Usurper might hate that his brother was on the throne he'd stolen. "There is still the question of a Targaryen restoration. We could have an empire that stretches across the Narrow Sea."
"We? Will you marry that Aegon, then?" Jon's voice always held the oddest tone when he spoke of his supposed brother, hope and bitterness wrapped around outrage.
She chuckled. "It would certainly serve him right, to never have an heir of his own seed and be forced to name you and your children as his successors. But, no, I have no desire to be second to someone like him."
Someone who had a comfortable life, hidden away, while she and her brother were on the run, begging on the streets. Someone who had a good education and people who believed in him, and never once tried to reach out to his family until she had dragons and an army of her own.
"You could make peace with Westeros, instead of war," Ser Barristan suggested, and curiously she motioned for him to continue. "Stannis' only heir is a daughter who isn't too much younger than you...or Prince Aemon."
Jon's eyes went wide and Daenerys almost laughed at him. Her poor nephew, still not used to being treated as a highborn.
"And as he's my heir, and would be the eventual King of of the Seven Kingdoms, that would bind our Empire together through their children."
That had a certain appeal, she had to admit. It would certainly stabilize her own kingdom, knowing there would be no threat from Westeros, and it would gain her an ally. If nothing else, favorable trade deals were appealing, to offset the still fumbling economy now that slavery had been banned throughout the Bay of Dragons.
"I can't possibly marry Shireen," Jon protested, glancing helplessly between the two of them.
"Ah, that's right, you've met the newest Usurper and his family." Jon's ever-depressing stories of his time with the Night's Watch were usually best forgotten. "All the better, he must have liked you. I hear he's near as dour as you."
Jon rolled his eyes at her. "She can't be more than two and ten, Dany!"
"Five or so years is not so great a difference in age," she mused aloud, as she'd certainly done worse herself. "Of course, I would not expect you to marry right away. It might even be years before any marriage contract is finalized."
"You can't be serious. You want not only Westeros, but the Bay of Dragons to fall under the Baratheon dynasty?"
That...was a good point. Obviously Stannis would insist any of their children take their mother's name.
"I would be satisfied with a solution such as Nymeria and the Martells reached. Baratheon-Targaryen, Targaryen-Baratheon. They don't have quite the same ring to them, but I'm sure we'll work something out."
"My Queen, when that Aegon finds out you're considering this."
"He'll take the Golden Company and leave us in peace, hopefully." She waved a dismissive hand. "We all three know he's no real dragon."
But perhaps this Shireen would prove to be, she'd have just as much, if not more, blood of the dragon as some Blackfyre did.
"I'll send out a messenger." She walked by Jon, patting him on the shoulder as she passed. "Don't look so sad, nephew, there are worse things than being sold in marriage."
He winced and she knew he'd gotten the message. One thing she could always count on, since he showed up last year confused and desperate, was that he'd do his duty to his Queen.
Notes: This fic is a lot of little AU tweaks wherein Stannis goes North but still manages to win in the end, Jon flees to Essos after his murder/resurrection, and fAegon never encounters Tyrion and doesn't go to Westeros early.

Pokemon Next Gen (Successors): Eidolon Matsuba
Eidolon is the son of Morty and Sabrina. Much like his mother, he’s detached from emotions but like his father, he has the power of clairvoyance and be able to befriend and understand Ghost-type Pokemon, his ability to see things others can’t seem to be heightened by the psychic abilities he inherited from his mother. Something he discovered when he was a kid was that he’s able to see deceased people and Pokemon, he can also talk to them and he’ll often tell people that their deceased family is always watching over them. Despite his looks, he does have a soft side that he’ll only show to anyone close to him. As he has a higher connection to ghosts and spirits, he’ll take over the Ecruteak City Gym instead of the Saffron City Gym, Sabrina didn’t mind and was honestly hoping to give her gym to someone else.
Eidolon’s main colors are indigo, black and purple. Indigo represents his perception and helps him open his third eye, in his case, speaking with those who have passed on. Indigo also helps him concentrate and is a representation of his devotion to his training, said color also represents his wisdom and his need for structure and order. He’s also sincere, mostly to those who had a family member, friend or Pokemon who passed and he will always comfort them by saying how their friend, family member or Pokemon is always watching over them. From black, he’s mysterious and a little secretive. Eidolon is also intimidating, unfriendly and unapproachable, all traits that are included in the color black but Eidolon is also independent, has self-control and is disciplined, black also represents his growth from a child to a teenager. Black could also possibly represent his powers and how aloof he is all of the time. From purple, Eidolon has the traits to be a leader and the color helps with his special psychic abilities, he also is currently the only psychic to be able to see those who have passed on thus making him unusual and unique. Purple also helps him spiritually, helping him get in touch with his deeper subconscious. Purple represents his empathic said and controlled emotion, as well as how he’s respectable and selfless.
His Pokemon:
Gengar- Eidolon was given Gengar back when he was a Ghastly and Eidolon was glad that his first Pokemon was a Ghastly. The two trained up until he had evolved into a Haunter, Eidolon also used the device to evolve Pokemon that need to be traded to evolve Haunter into Gengar. Gengar and Eidolon were given a Keystone and Mega stone, the two of them have mastered Mega evolution but they don’t use it in official battles just yet. Gengar is a prankster and can be a little ruthlessly cruel in battle, as he’s Eidolon’s strongest Pokemon he can only be used with really experienced trainers. There are times he can be silly in battle and cause trouble as he does so, much to the annoyance of anyone who battled him before. Despite being a trouble maker, he’s still extremely loyal to Eidolon and will stop acting up if Eidolon even so much as says his name. He stays out of his Pokeball.
Given in an Ultra Ball.
Ability is Cursed Body. Mega Gengar’s ability is Shadow Tag.
Held Item is Gengarite.
Moves are Shadow Ball, Perish Song, Mean Look, Destiny Bond, Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Sludge Wave, Venoshock, Focus Blast, and Phantom Force.
Galar Corsola- Eidolon caught his Galarian Corsola after tripping over her while she was hiding, an empty Dusk ball fell from his belt and he ended up catching it. He was very confused as to why Corsola looked different and he did some research, which made him learn that he found a regional variant and felt bad for the poor Corsola. He was going to let her go but she refused and wanted to stay with him, so he let her. Corsola is very shy, she’s often found hiding her true self due to thinking that she might not be as cute as a normal Corsola, but she’s still a hard worker, wanting to prove to others that she isn’t useless or baggage. She refuses to evolve.
Caught in a Dusk Ball.
Ability is Weak Armor.
Moves are Mirror Coat, Strength Sap, Giga Drain, Will-O-Wisp, Hex, Psychic, Substitute, Shadow Ball, Iron Defense, and Night Shade.
Golett- Golett is an odd case, even for Eidolon. They just walked up to Eidolon one day and wordlessly let themself be caught by Eidolon’s Ultra Ball. Golett doesn’t talk, they mostly just look at someone and will occasionally nod or shake their head when asked something. Eidolon isn’t sure if this is how Golett acts normally or they’re possibly an old relative from either of his parent's side to watch over him and keep him safe, either way, Eidolon doesn’t want to release them into the wild and just keeps them on the team. Golett is strangely strong despite still being unevolved, Eidolon always has to make sure he holds back a little bit when facing another trainer.
Caught in an Ultra Ball.
Ability is Iron Fist.
Moves are Shadow Punch, Mega Punch, Earthquake, Phantom Force, Heavy Slam, Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, Dynamic Punch, Stomping Tantrum and Drain Punch.
Super-Sized Gourgeist- Eidolon was almost lured into following his Gourgeist into the afterlife, had Gengar not have been around he would have been done for. Once weakening her enough, he caught Gourgeist and had his entire team keep her under control. Gourgeist is stubborn and huffy, she’s also cruel and enjoys scaring others by singing as her hair wraps around their bodies. She honestly doesn’t like Eidolon or her other teammates, but she does have a crush on Eidolon’s Galarian Corsola despite the fact both of them are females and in different egg groups.
Caught in a Dusk Ball.
Ability is Frisk.
Moves are Explosion, Moonblast, Seed Bomb, Phantom Force, Giga Drain, Shadow Ball, Rock Slide, Power Whip, Nasty Plot, and Leech Seed.
Litten- Eidolon found Litten sitting next to a small rock, he was confused at first but let him be thinking he was waiting for his trainer. The next day he saw the same Litten still sitting exactly where he was from the previous day, this went on for a week before he decided to ask someone about the stray Litten, all people knew is that Litten was waiting for someone, some people would give him food and water when they pass by so he doesn’t starve. That was when Eidolon used his clairvoyance to try and find Litten’s trainer, after a good while he did find a lead. That lead was at a hospital, he picked up Litten, ignoring all of the scratches he was getting and carried him to the hospital where Litten’s trainer was, sadly Litten’s trainer didn’t have much time left to live but was still happy to see Litten before she died. Eidolon and Litten stayed by her side during her entire time at the hospital until it was time for her to pass on. Litten was in a depression but Eidolon was there to cheer him up and let him know that no matter what his former trainer will always be with him, soon Litten fully got used to Eidolon and joined his team. Litten is a bit of a loner, mostly spending his time on his own either training or messing with whatever he sees. He likes cuddling up to Eidolon when he sees that Eidolon is sitting on a chair or relaxing, so far he only smiles at Eidolon.
Caught in a Luxury Ball.
Ability is Blaze.
Moves are Fire Fang, Double Kick, Scary Face, Flamethrower, Shadow Claw, Acrobatics, Flare Blitz, Crunch, Swords Dance, and Leech Life.
Hatterene- Eidolon had caught Hatterene when she was still a little Hatenna since Eidolon is always calm she warmed up to him very easily and was very happy to be caught by him. With a lot of training, she evolved into Hattrem and then into Hatterene. Hatterene is a calm and collected Pokemon, she hates loud noises or anyone who isn’t calm and will use her ability to cause headaches, she’s also fiercely loyal to Eidolon and will only battle or attack under his orders or if someone is going to attack him. Hatterene is allowed to battle in gym matches so long as she has a Ghost-type move in her moveset, Eidolon agrees to this as he would like to use his Pokemon to their fullest. She’s currently the second strongest Pokemon on his team.
Caught in a Love Ball.
Ability is Anticipation.
Moves are Psycho Cut, Dazzling Gleam, Shadow Ball, Calm Mind, Psychic, Hyper Beam, Mystical Fire, Future Sight, Draining Kiss and Swords Dance.

Thank you for your NDRV3 meta posts! They helped me in understanding the conflict between Harukawa and Ouma throughout the events of Chapter 5. Even though I understand Ouma’s thoughts of her better, I honestly feel sorry for Harukawa. As much as people blame her for what her actions have ended up causing, the remembering light is ultimately the root of the problem in the long term of events. My question is, what do you think would change in Chapter 5 if the remembering light wasn’t involved?
Chapter 5 is extremely interesting precisely because of howevents spiral out of control so much! The Hope’s Peak remember light in Chapter5 is honestly a really brilliant counterattack by the ringleader, preciselybecause it’s fascinating that they decided to utilize so much of the first twoDR games in order to play on the expectations of both the characters and theplayers. It’s a strategy that doesn’t rely on super strategic chess-like movesthe way Ouma does, but entirely on emotion and preconceptions, and it was incredibly effective.
I feel like the remember lights are such a better, morewell-done alternative to dr3 brainwashing. Even if they use the same similarbase technology, the fact that remember lights allow for these questions ofmorality and free will is all I could ask for. Where the brainwashing in dr3was a huge mess which either worked perfectly, without room for any loopholesor escape, or whether it needed a lobotomy in order to work, or whether youcould just be punched out of beingbrainwashed, it still left no room for argument that “no, these people are notdoing this out of their own free will, there’s no choice in the matterwhatsoever.”
But the remember lights are different: the ringleader couldn’tpredict what every character would do after witnessing them, but they couldstill implant certain likely scenarios. By using the remember light in Chapter5 to set all the remaining survivors up as “the remaining hope of the world,”and Ouma as “Junko’s successor as SHSL Despair,” it was a brilliant emotionalploy meant to motivate everyone else into action after Ouma himself had triedto crush their willpower in order to force the game to a halt.
Maki’s actions are extremely interesting precisely because whileshe was undeniably set up by the ringleader and prompted into motion by theremember light, she carried out every single thing she did under the beliefthat it was entirely her own decision, entirely of her own free will—a hugestep, considering she lived her life in her in-game backstory believing herselfto be nothing but a tool to be used by others.
Her mindset and life as an assassin is in fact the reasonshe was the first one to find the remember light in the first place. Whereeveryone else was so depressed that they were literally holed up in their roomswithout eating or showering for days on end, just wanting to die, Maki wasn’tsomeone particularly impacted by the thought of dying all that much. Eventhough the truth of the outside world was certainly horrible, she was alreadyused to so many horrible things in her life that she still went through herusual motions and routine. Everyone else was incapable of functioning even atthe most basic human level, but Maki was still able to go look around thecafeteria and the school at large, and when she found the remember light thatthe ringleader had set up, she was the one who rounded the others up and broughtthem there.
It’s precisely because of her ability to shrug off death aspart of an almost-routine aspect of her life, and her status as someone who hasbeen trained since childhood (in-game anyway) to be ruthless, emotionless, andthe perfect killing machine, that she worked so well as a pawn for theringleader. To Maki, after living a life like that, getting any taste ofsomething she considered to be “a choice of her own free will,” such as herfeelings for Momota, meant that she was very dangerous when let off the railsfor the first time.
She undoubtedly is prompted to action and goes off to tryand torture and kill Ouma because of how she was manipulated by the ringleader. But it’s also true that her own personality and her own choices are exactlywhat led to her being the most suitable pawn for the job. Because she wassomeone with no impulse control (or rather, Momota becomes about 80% of herimpulse control and then that disappears when he’s held up in the machinerybay), because she was a trained, ruthless assassin, and because she could andwould try to kill those in her way if she thought it would benefit thesituation, she walked right into the mastermind’s plans.
It’s hard to say what would have happened without theChapter 5 remember light, because while the other characters certainly would’vemaintained more of their rationality, they would likely have been too depressedand lethargic to do much, at least for a while. And while the remember lightitself is what jumpstarted Maki’s willingness to eliminate Ouma completely, shehad already tried to choke him to death on at least two occasions even longbefore thinking he was a Remnant of Despair, even in front of a whole bunch ofwitnesses, and even though doing such would only have contributed to thecontinuation of the killing game.
Her huge lack ofself-control and her reliance on a talent that would itself only enable thekilling game further is precisely why Ouma made the whole group aware of herSHSL Assassin talent at the end of Chapter 2. He tried, very early on, to forcethe group to come to terms with the fact that whether or not they liked Maki asa person, she was clearly a loose cannon who needed to be watched carefully, and she could and would move to murder someone in plain sight with theslightest provocation (as she did when he taunted her about Ryouma’s motive video).
The possible changes in Chapter 5 if the remember light hadn’tbeen involved are therefore hard to predict, because Maki would still have beena considerable threat, and unlike the rest of the group who were all pretty suicidaland ready to just give up and die, she likely would have just kept going out ofhabit until some external force killed her.
The only possibility for some kind of different outcome Icould foresee is perhaps if everyone sort of…came around, with enough time.Considering Momota also saw the truth of the outside world and was deeplyshaken by it, we can surmise that he was probably also pretty heavily depressedfor the first few days that he stayed with Ouma in the machinery bay (though Isuspect his anger probably outweighed his depression, since it’s Momota we’retalking about). Still, it’s true that Momota managed to bounce back to feelingrelatively normal without using any remember lights at all, and that justthinking about getting back to the group and away from Ouma was all themotivation he really needed to feel like he had a sense of purpose.
If Momota had managed to either come up with some kind ofescape plan on his own (since the plan with the crossbow wouldn’t work ifHimiko and the others were holed up in their rooms and not coming to visit him)or even managed to talk to Ouma and been let go normally, since he would’vecooled his head off considerably, it’d be interesting to see a scenario inwhich Momota met up with the rest of the group afterwards.
The fact that they would all see for themselves that he wascompletely unharmed, and would know that he’d talked with Ouma without theconversation ever steering into “hope vs. despair” territory would likely makeit much harder for the ringleader to use that particular Hope’s Peak rememberlight later on. I don’t doubt she might try,as they themselves said they had actually been hoping to save it for later andhadn’t wanted their trump card to be forced so early, but it would certainlycall for some revision in their scenario.
Maki might well call off her vendetta against Ouma too, ifMomota were able to return to the group unharmed—temporarily, anyway. WithMaki, there’s so much about her being a loaded gun just waiting to misfire, which is ultimately exactly what happens in Chapter 5 as we know it. Therewould have to be heavy focus on the fact that she was the most likely to beprompted into reckless action, or else even if it wasn’t right then, she wouldstill have been the most likely to kickstart the game into action later on,too.
Still, this potential for free will even when the ringleaderlater would like to claim that “every single thing was planned according totheir scenario” is exactly what I like about ndrv3. It’s very clear that thecharacters’ choices and free will have a hugeimpact on the outcome of the killing game, and that unlike with dr3’sbrainwashing, the most the remember lights can do is twist and suggest the mostlikely scenarios. But how the characters actually act specifically, and whetherthe remember lights even work on them at all, is extremely subjective.
They can make it more likelyfor a character to do something, but the characters themselves often keepsurprising, and that’s exactly what makes them such an enjoyable, likable cast.Like with much of ndrv3, there’s a lot of moral ambiguity involved when youreally try and evaluate certain characters’ actions. Trying to determine howmuch of their actions were them being put up to something, and how much wastheir own inherent personality and free will, is extremely enjoyable when youknow that they do get a say in the matter, unlike with characters in dr3.
We can only speculate as to what would’ve actually happenedin Chapter 5 if that particular remember light hadn’t been used at the time itwas. But I think considering the ringleader’s willingness to keep adapting tonew scenarios and writing new possibilities for their “fictional entertainment,”things likely would still have reached a boil some way or other. It’s just amatter of how much the characters themselves would’ve fallen into thesepitfalls and traps with more preparation. Anyway, thank you for asking thisquestion—I hope I was able to answer it well!
