Happy Holidays Everyone! I started making these yearly playlists in 2001 as an attempt to connect with friends in the wake of 911. It was just before the dawn of ITunes, and way before social media. We were not in touch like we are today. I burned dozens of individual cd’s one at a time, printed up customized jewel case covers and snail mailed them all out. It was an annual month-long labor of love. Over the past few years, streaming music has made it much easier and faster to compile and distribute, and frankly much more fun. I still look forward to putting the playlist and blog together and sharing it with all of you. Particularly this year as it gives me a chance to connect with so many friends I haven’t seen in quite some time. It was a tremendously challenging year for all of us. I was grateful to have had my family here in LA the entire time, we remain healthy and well. The west coast Herzogs know just how lucky we have been. The next year will not be without its own challenges, but I'm hopeful we are able to move past this pandemic and the exhausting events of the past 4. More than that, I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in 2021. Until then, be safe, be well, and be good to one another. Enjoy the music.

Khruangbin - Time (You And I) Don’t ask me to pronounce the name of this eclectic trio from Texas, but this dubby disco tune had me returning to its chilled out groove often during the last few decidedly “un-chill” months. Dreamy and funky, the groove takes me back to NYC’s early 80′s club scene and Ze Records releases from the likes of Kid Creole and Coati Mundi.

Bill Withers (1938-2020)- Use Me The legendary Bill Withers left the playing field at the top of his game in the early 80′s, hardly heard from again. And while he didn't pass from Covid, his healing pop hymn Lean On Me seemed to be everywhere as people found music to help them cope with the challenges of the pandemic. Withers left behind a legendary and enduring group of hit songs that moved easily from soul to folk to pop, not to mention the subtle rolling funk of this one.

Black Pumas- Fire Strong debut from an unlikely Austin duo that garnerd both buzz and grammy nods. The critics are calling it “psychedelic soul”. Not quite sure that nails it, but like the artists coming up next, they’re carving out new ground while drawing inspiration from classic sources.

Charley Crockett- Welcome to Hard Times

Three artists that are literally changing the face of Country and Americana music. Soulful, authentic and diverse, reaching back for inspiration but always looking forward. If you like this sort of stuff they are all worth checking out. Each album is filled with quality songs.

Low Cut Connie_ Private Lives Philly’s Low Cut Connie are back at it with a double album that plays like the soundtrack to a boozy night at your favorite bar. Sweaty, funky and not a little bit messy. If Peter Wolf and Bruce had a kid it would be this blue eyed soul boy. Adam Weiner grew up in the shadow of the Jersey shore and can't help but have a bit of that E Street hustle.

Willie Nile- New York at Night One of New York’s beloved adopted son’s dropped this love letter right into the jaws of a battered metropolis driven to its knees by the pandemic. It was heartbreaking to listen as the “city that never sleeps” came to a full stop. Somehow I still found myself coming back to it, imagining night’s ahead, when NYC is back on its feet and I’m roaming its streets. Looking for music, a beer, or maybe just a slice, and fueled by the irreplaceable energy and promise of the greatest city on earth.

The Long Ryders- Down to The Well Americana pioneers the Long Ryders reunited last year for a surprisingly solid album. This single sounds like it could have been recorded during their 80′s heyday featuring their trademark Byrds like jangle and harmonies, but the lyrics mark this song as unmistakably 2020.

The Speedways- Kisses Are History UK power pop outfit reach back to the the 60′s on this sweet slice of retro pop perfection.

Billie Joe Armstrong- That Thing You Do

In the early days of the pandemic we had all our kids (+ a significant other) at our house for a few months. It worked out great and we were luckier than most. The biggest issue was keeping enough food, weed and wine around. There were some great nights with amazing meals, followed by gathering around the TV together. We re-watched The Sopranos, binged Billy On The Street, and revisited some of our favorite movies. One night we went back to a old family favorite, Tom Hanks’ underrated love letter to the one hit wonders of the post Beatles era, That Thing You Do! I’ve seen the movie several times and it never fails to please. A true feel good film and a perfect Kodak snapshot capturing a simpler time in American pop culture.

While we watch the unlikely chart topper’s The Oneders fizzle as fast as they rose to fame, its not really the point. The movie is really an old fashioned love story. Playing like a perfect hit song you can listen to over and over, full of both hooks and heart. I always thought the title track, written by Fountains Of Wayne leader Adam Schlesinger (who we lost to Covid), brilliantly captured the British Invasion sound every group wanted after The Beatles stormed America. Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong must agree. During the pandemic he cut an album’s worth of cool covers including a faithful version of this one.

Gerard Way (W/Judith Hill - Here Comes the End A tale of discovering music in 2020: Heard this on a Netflix trailer for the series The Umbrella Factory. Turns out it is performed by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) who also writes the comic book the series is based on. (got all that?) He’s joined on this searing garage/psych rave up by the talented and versatile Judith Hill doing her best Merry Clayton.

Hinds- Spanish Bombs I’ve been following this Madrid based, all female outfit of punky garage rockers for a few years now. I think they are pretty great. This track, recorded for a Joe Strummer tribute bursts with an unbridled joy the stone faced and politically minded Clash could never muster. I bet Joe would love it though

The Secret Sisters- Hand Over My Heart Have enjoyed their harmonies for some time now. This one gives me vague Wilson Phillips vibes and I don’t really mind.

Tame Impala- Breathe Deeper I know I’m supposed to like this guy, all the cool kids do, I’ve even seen the band at Coachella. Over the years very little of the music has stuck to me, but the pandemic offered a bit more free time to dig into this funky dubby, chilled out jam, and it stuck with me. Not to mention that 2020 was all about deep breaths.

Ledisi (feat.Corey Henry)- What Kind of Love Is That Ledisi is back with some slinky, sultry R&B and jazzy vocals

Dinner Party- FreezeTag An R&B/Jazz collective featuring Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder and Kamasi Washington use sweet soul on heartbreaking and all too familiar tale..

Toots and The Maytals- Time Tough I’ve written an awful lot about my love for Reggae over the years. Right after Bob Marley kicked the door down for me, Toots showed me around the house. Ska, rock steady, and roots. He was true reggae royalty and sadly we lost him to Covid, just after he released what would be his last album. Check my Toots tribute blog and playlist.

Mungo’s Hi Fi- The Beat Goes SKA! These clever UK roots reggae collective never fail to surprise. This kitschy Sonny & Cher cover managed to make me smile every time I heard it. No mean feat in 2020

Stone Foundation (feat. Durand Jones)- Hold on To Love Frequent collaborators with Paul Weller (he appears on a track on the album), Stone Foundation are back with another batch of their UK soul revival stylings. This one features Durand Jones ( of Durand Jones & The Indications) on vocals and some great reggae style horns at the top.

The Pretenders- You Can’t Hurt A Fool Can’t resist a good torch song, especially sung by the smokey voiced Chrissie Hynde. Was kind of shocked at how many good songs were on this album.

Shelby Lynne_ Don’t Even Believe in Love Sultry country soul and one of her strongest albums in awhile.

Jaime Wyatt- Neon Cross Outlaw country has a new bad girl. And in case you didn’t think she was serious, she enlisted producer Shooter Jennings (and his mom Jessi Colter on one track) to help make her point.

Daniel Donato- Justice 25 year old guitar prodigy call his music “cosmic country”. Ok, now I’m listening. You should be too.

The Jayhawks- This Forgotten Town 30 plus + after their debut this Twin Cities alt country group led by founding member Gary Louris continue to deliver. They find their inner Neil Young on this one.

Lucero- Time To Go Home God I wish I was in a bar right now listening to this, even if I might be crying in my beer.

John Prine (1946 -2020)- Lake Marie We lost so many this year, but this one really stung. A true American songwriting treasure, who was still making great music against all odds right up to his untimely passing. His songs are known for their simplicity, and economy of words. but this one goes against the grain. I’m still not exactly certain what it’s about. Sorrowful and haunting, yet somehow uplifting and redemptive. I heard him perform it live here in Los Angeles a just over a year ago and it has stuck in my head ever since. There is surely a place in heaven for the great John Prine. He sang about it on his final studio album in 2018. Ironically it became the last song on his last record.

It's been four months, and I still can't get over the amount of bad faith this fandom is willing to put behind every single decision Steve “makes”. It's especially jarring to see ex-pro-Steve blogs pull this crap, since they constantly call T*ny and B*cky stans out for doing the very same thing.

Somehow, in their brains, T*ny stans (or whoever else) assuming the worst of Steve =/= them doing the same damn thing.

You'd think that something as positive and good as starting a support group for the survivors of the snap would be free of discourse right? Well of course not, because that actually makes Steve so ~irresponsible and selfish for leaving Nat alone to deal with the post-snap mess (because as always, Steve OWES his time and labor to some character/cause, so how dare he try to get better when others are hurting)! And also, ~he's not even a certified therapist, he doesn't know what he's doing, so how dare he try to do what Sam did! (never mind that pre-aeg, people would gush at the thought of Steve trying to be more like Sam!). And so on.

Not only are these assumptions not backed by ANY evidence, they are the worst possible assumptions you could make out of a 5 minute scene that just meant to say “hey, 5 years have passed, this is what they've been up to”.

Five years have passed. The time in between is a blank canvas. We don't know what happened in the meantime–for all we know, Steve might've gone to therapy himself and taken a course (I doubt you could just... hold a session without permits anyway but lol) that qualified him as a therapist. Maybe he was working side by side with another therapist. In the meantime, he could've continued to help Nat whenever an emergency occurred. But no, these self-proclaimed Steve fans, the ones who love the REAL Steve, not the fake Steve we got in aeg, would rather go for the worst alternative, the one that tears down the character they so like in order to, what? Stick it to the russos? Show how much the filmmakers don't know the character compared to them, the only people who truly understand Steve?

In the end, I guess, what this really does (other than confirm how hypocritical people can be) is reaffirm the sad truth, that ship or no ship, people will find ways to complain about Steve's actions in a way they wouldn't dare with anyone else. And it’s exhausting.

1: Paul and Timothy to the people of Philippi, Grace to you The people of Philppi are amazing people and they're so generous and they've helped him so much He prays that their love will grow even more Now, Paul wants them to know that he's in prison right now, but that's actually good news Now all the guards have heard of Jesus and his prison time is inspiring others Though of course there are those who want to hurt Paul, and those who preach Christ in envy But it really doesn't matter, if he dies/gets executed, that'll be good for Paul as he'll be closer to Jesus earlier And if he lives, he can continue to travel around and evangelize For Paul, it's a win-win, but since the latter would also be good for others, he hopes that's what happens Paul wants to make sure that if he visits them or not, they continue to be model citizens and be like citizens of heaven Also, Paul isn't going to back down because of nay-sayers

Always Safe and Never Bored

This year, we opened a school.

We closed one, too, but more on that later.

I wish I had taken more time to document the past year, for my own sake, and because leaders I admire share their thinking and learning in public.

The last time I wrote here (2 years ago 🤦‍♂️)

Families everywhere sacrifice and work hard. There are nerds, everywhere. Theater nerds, physics nerds, bits of both. Some get to go to a school where they are never bored, and always safe. Some don’t.

Since August 28th, 2019, we've been building a school in the South Bronx where every kid is always safe, and never bored.

Our school is very data driven. We geek out over NWEA MAP results. We look at student work every day. We have a part of our school day dedicated to tutoring and reteaching. Data gives you a direction, but you need a motivation to drive there. For us, every internal goal and external benchmark, comes back to this:

Every kid deserves to go to a school where they are always safe and never bored.

The most exciting, the most scary, and the most sacred thing about running a school is that, while kids and adults are in our building, we have the power and responsibility to make this true.

Always safe

We do home visits for every student. We ask a lot of our kids when they come in our building, so we think it's important to take the first step- before I ask you come into my house and do things my way, let me come to your house and learn how you do things. We learn so much, about how we can be partners with our families and build on what they're doing, about where we need clear lines of difference, where we can learn from our families, and where we may need to be a support or a respite.

We greet every kid, by name, before they enter the building, and several more times before they enter their classroom.

We talk to our families at least once a week, rain or shine, positive or negative news.

We have small-group advisories that meet every day.

We have clear, consistent, and logical consequences for student behavior to celebrate when our students demonstrate our values and educate them when they choose not to.

We serve healthy and nutritious food that's so good, I eat it most days.

We have yoga for every kid, every day.

We have kids from 72 different elementary schools across the Bronx who feel safe in our building, every day.

Never bored

Our school is designed for content nerds. Our teachers are content nerds. Our kids are content nerds. It's awesome.

I've been privileged to work with tremendous educators in my careers, and the best teachers are content nerds. Love for kids is a prerequisite. High expectations are essential. Content nerds are, well — If you get excited about Tier 3 vocabulary words, the area model for multiplication, demonstrating phases of matter, adding conditionals to code - you're a content nerd, and our school is designed for you.

Our day is long and varied. Every kid has English, Math, Science, Computer Science, History & Geography, and Health & Wellness, every day. The academic day starts at 8:10 and goes until 4:45. Like I said, a long day.

So what does a long day designed for content nerds look like? Our teachers only teach half the day.

At most schools, here's what that looks like: a constant ping-pong between teaching and "prep" periods which are also your only time to grade, call families, attend meetings, eat, use the bathroom, be a human being, etc.

At Creo, it looks like this: if you teach English or Math, you only teach in the morning, and have the entire afternoon to give feedback on student work, plan ahead, collaborate with colleagues…and be a human being. If you teach CS, Science, History, or Health & Wellness, you have all morning to do this, and teach only in the afternoons.

There is a tremendous amount of intellectual labor that goes into good teaching. Every great teacher knows this and we think that in order to be a great school, we should provide and protect our teachers' time to do it.

I could go on- about our curricula (shoutout to Uncommon Schools' Reading Reconsidered Pilot of which we are a proud member, Core Knowledge's incredible and free knowledge-building resources, Amplify's Science curricula that have made our kids scientists, our internally developed CS and Health & Wellness resources…curricula could and should be a whole post to itself), about the results this has had for our kids (they love coming to school, and…we do have midyear NWEA MAP data that is very, very encouraging), and about how our families have embraced and supported and informed the work we do.

I really want to write that post, and I will.

However…

March 14

I am writing to let you know that effective Monday, March 16, we will be suspending in-person classes at Creo College Prep until March 30. This decision was not taken lightly, but we believe it is in the best interest of protecting our students, staff, and families in these uncertain times. In the last 24 hours, more than half of the charter schools in New York City have closed, and we have decided to follow their example rather than wait for the DOE. Our most important responsibility is keeping your child safe, and this is the best option we have to do so.

On Friday, we sent all students home with lessons for next week, as well as a novel to read. Our team is committed to preparing lessons for students for every day that we are out of session. We will be preparing video lessons for students to continue learning new material, and holding office hours to ensure that students are able to ask their teachers questions.

Our school year began with visits to many of your homes. Our school opened this year in temporary space. Next week, we will “open” in a new way, on the internet and in your home. We are committed to each and every student continuing to learn, and supporting you however we can.

March 26

Today we begin Distance Learning at Creo. What does this mean? On Friday, students brought home homework packets to begin learning at home. Today, our teachers began preparing video lessons for everyday learning and creating work that can be completed at home.

Here is how it works:

Visit creoprep.org/distance-learning. There is a letter there for students. Students should read the entire letter, and then be able to explain to you their responsibilities.

Students should visit creoprep.org/distance-learning every single day. There are videos for every subject, every day. Teachers are recording their lessons so that students can make progress every day.

After watching the video, students should complete the lesson for that day. For each subject, teachers have prepared a packet for the week.

Our teachers are holding Office Hours. During this time, students will video chat with teachers. They will get feedback on their work, receive grades and THRIVE points, and be able to ask questions.

April 11

While we hoped and intended for a very different last three months of fifth grade, we have a plan.

Here is what we will do:

Continue Distance Learning, every day, 9am - 3pm. We can’t send our students to school, so we will continue to send the school to them. As long as your family wants a Creo education, a Creo education will be available for your family.

Continue social-emotional supports for our students, including daily small-group advisory check-ins with every student and counseling sessions.

Continue to support you with accessing technology and critical services, including food, internet, and technology.

Here is what we will not do:

We don’t give up. A year ago, our school had never existed. By last month, our students received as much instructional time as a DOE school has in an entire year. We still have 48 days of school left, and we’re going to use it to do great things, together.

We don’t lower our bar. We still expect every student to be in class, every single day. We still expect them to try their best on their work. We still expect them to be consistently kind to their classmates, their teachers, and their families.

We don’t pretend this is normal. We know that many of you are working on the frontlines of this crisis, in hospitals and grocery stores, on trains and buses, in danger and in our thoughts. Some of us are caring for the sick, some of us are grieving the lost. Our first concern is making sure our children are safe. If we can help reduce stress — around deadlines, promotion to 6th grade, technology access, food — we are here for you.

At Creo, you’ve seen us wear and say “Creo in the Bronx.” I believe in the Bronx. Now, that is true more than ever. Together, we made a new school. We will not be back in the same building until next school year, but the school is not the building.

Today, we can say this: Creo in Creo. I believe in Creo. In your living rooms and kitchens, our kids continue to learn. In their living rooms and kitchens, our teachers continue to teach.

It is normal to feel grief and frustration, because we are all experiencing loss, every day. We wish it were different, but so does everyone in these times. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

If you need time to process, to grieve, to care for your family, take it. If you need us, we will be where we have been since August 28th: building knowledge, skills, and character, educating your student to thrive in college and to assume responsibility for identifying and solving problems in our community and our world.

Always safe and never bored

I spent 116 schooldays as Principal of Creo College Prep, a corporeal school. I've spent the last 33 days as the principal of an online school that we never intended to open. There are as many approaches to distance learning as there are schools in the world, and we don't know yet who's "right" or "high-achieving" or appropriately and capably responding to trauma, and I won't claim that what we've done in the past 33 days is right for anybody else.

We know where our kids are, because we've sat in the living rooms and kitchens where they're now logging on to Office Hours. We know who is safe, and who needs help, because we know our families and our we reach out, every day. We can't keep our kids and families safe right now, because the world isn't safe right now and no school can't change that. We never could, even pre-pandemic. All we could do, pre-pandemic, was show up every day and work hard to make a school where every kid was always safe, and never bored.

If you're logged in and thinking about Number the Stars or the area of a rectangular prism, or biomes, or debugging code, or perfecting a yoga pose, you aren't safe from the world, but you are safe to try, and fail, and try again with us. This is the same fiction, the same magic we conjure in school every day. We aren't safe from the world, but we can feel the safety of teachers and classmates celebrating our successes and learning from our errors. Our team of content nerds is still making that happen. Our team of content nerds- the teachers who keep teaching, and students across the hardest-hit borough in our city who keep showing up, never bored.

10 Minutes With Chelsey Walker-Watson: Part Two

We continue our conversation with Atlas Coffee Roasters’ Chelsey Walker-Watson, discussing lessons learned from competition, working with the Glitter Cat Bootcamps, and more.

In part one of our interview with Chelsey Walker-Watson, we discussed getting interested in coffee, and how an initial café job spurred a coffee career that eventually led to multiple finals appearances in the U.S. Brewers Cup. Coffee competition not only resulted in personal and professional growth for Chelsey, it also led to her sharing those experiences as a mentor to other coffee competitors through the Glitter Cat Bootcamps.

In part two of this interview, we talk to Chelsey about growing from competition, working with the Glitter Cats, and more.

Are there any lessons you’ve learned about life/yourself from competing for a while?

To me, personal and professional growth are the biggest reasons to compete! I now realize that I love public speaking when I am sharing something meaningful to me, especially a perspective that could be valuable for other coffee lovers to consider. I realized that I know a lot about how to make coffee taste great and am not limited to hospitality as a skill. Although I viewed myself as shy and risk-averse, through competition, I know that I can be creative and vulnerable.

Speaking of public speaking, I know you took part in the recent Glitter Cat Bootcamps with sessions about gender equity and coffee careers. Can you describe what you talked about there and how those presentations went?

[Glitter Cat founder] T. Ben Fischer and I met while waiting in line to come on stage for the nationals results last season, and I complimented Glitter Cat and expressed a desire to support their efforts. Atlas later became an official sponsor for the 2020 bootcamp season. T. Ben asked if Atlas could support the bootcamps with a presentation related to career sustainability and mental health, and I suggested sharing the Gender Action Learning Systems (GALS) efforts of some of our producer-partners in Uganda, DRC, and Rwanda.

GALS is a community-led empowerment methodology that uses value principals of inclusion, respect, and equity to improve rural farmer livelihoods; Glitter Cats’ objectives include to “increase the diversity, representation, and success of competitors who self-identify as part of a marginalized community” and to “provide professional tools for career development beyond the competition stage.” Clearly, the values of both groups of coffee professionals are aligned, connecting the beginning of the coffee supply chain to the end.

I presented this workshop for Glitter Cats at the Barista, Brewers, and Roasters Bootcamps, while my colleague Tymika presented to CIGS competitors. We spent half of our time sharing the GALS work of coffee producers, exploring the vision journey of Bukonzo Joint Cooperative Union in Uganda as an example, and the second half of our time was focused on a goal-setting activity inspired by GALS to explore our personal needs and dreams.

Because literacy levels can vary in rural communities, GALS tools use illustration as the basis for communication to ensure accessibility to all members. Community members create individual explorations of their lives and their aspirations, and then move on to the household and cooperative level. The Glitter Cats applied those principles to draw a specific personal goal, including their current state, what they wanted to accomplish, the actions and milestones to do so, and the challenges and resources along their journey. Tymika and I led the group by sharing our own personal goals. The experience was powerful, and it involved great vulnerability and self-reflection for all, as well as opportunities to explore our shared experiences.

Finally, I also included a personal speech in each workshop to explore some of the inherent challenges (and responsibilities) of retail coffee professionals, such as the realities of emotional labor and working at the end of a long supply chain, the struggles surrounding our identity and authenticity of self when serving the public, and our duty to be our own advocate since we are the only people that will ever know our needs.

Last question, back to competition: Will you compete in Brewers Cup this year? If not, are you comfortable sharing why?

No, I am not competing in Brewers Cup this year. In approaching my last competition season, I knew that it would most likely be my last, and I decided not to compete for several reasons.

Competition, regardless of your work ethic, takes immense time and resources, and I have other goals to prioritize outside of coffee.

These days, most U.S. competitors and finalists (and certainly winners) are using luxury coffees for Open Service, primarily Geshas because they are often outstanding. I competed with a natural process Yemeni coffee (also high-end, but an underrepresented origin) for two years and a washed Kenya, and I think that I performed as well as possible using coffees that represent an authentic and direct relationship for me and coffee stories that need to be told.

I always want to bring something new to the competition stage. To that end, I am focused on supporting the Glitter Cat Brewers this competition season. Many of them are first-time competitors with an interesting perspective to share, a lot of which has not been voiced on a competition stage, so watch them perform if you have the opportunity!

Your dance sneakers stride through Seoul's busiest streets, Spring breezes licking your ankles and anticipation tightening your grip on the speaker clutched in your hand. You scan the street horizon in search of a suitable dance floor for your little spectacle. Pace quickening, your eyes pin-point a wide clearing up ahead next to an intersection, unoccupied and spacious.

/Perfect./

Within minutes you've reached your destination, set down the speaker, plugged your phone, and tapped on the playlist labeled "N/Y's Jams." You peer up from the device and smile at the bustling pedestrians, too hurried to notice your preparations. Women click past in heels as high as their income, tourists drag aching feet and filled cameras, stylish persons sip macchiatos with shades stained caramel by the late afternoon sun. Everything all too familiar. Today, however, they would be in for quite a treat. Continuing with your task, you hit "play" and take a few good steps back, centering yourself in the middle of the concrete square.

/Alright, let's do this.../

You take multiple deep breaths before the music kicks in, mentally preparing yourself for what's to come. First up on your playlist was "Really Really" by WINNER so it didn't surprise you when the opening bass sends your body spiraling into its rhythm. Each step fitting its corresponding count like pieces of a puzzle finally aligning. Every movement flawlessly practiced, interlocking step with melody. Your worn dance shoes are enough proof of hours dedicated to hard work. Time to put it to the test... It starts with one person. Then a few more trickle in. Then clusters of pedestrians form a circle surrounding the main attraction they all came for: You. The music omitting from the speakers echo through the streets of Seoul, bouncing off skyscrapers and across local vendors, entrancing all who hears it like a spell. It tugs at their curiosity and guides their feet towards the beckoning sound.

JungKook POV:

JungKook's afternoon didn't quite go as planned, for he didn't expect to hear his group's song "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" while strolling along the city sidewalk. Curiosity surged through his veins as he turned toward the sound, trying to locate the music. His eyes quickly stopped at the nearby intersection where a crowd surged forward, gathering around something clearly very enduring.

/Hmm must be a street performer.../ /I wonder if they're using the original choreography./ /They must be good if a crowd this large managed to form this quickly.../

Deciding he could afford a little detour, JungKook tugged his face-mask over the bridge of his nose and approached the crowd. The river of pedestrians were hard to push through but JungKook managed to reach the front of the audience, finally seeing what all the fuss was about. In the center of the circle danced a girl, all eyes glued to her sharp steps, every movement laced with precision. She obviously had practiced and perfected the choreography almost too much. Having memorized every subtle step, she gave herself freedom to stylize the choreography a bit, adding her own twist to the rhythm. JungKook could hardly recognize it as his own dance and, needless to say, he was impressed. Suddenly, the girl spun around, catching JungKook's eye in the process, a smile instantly spreading across her cheeks. She refused to let go of his gaze, at least not until she stopped dancing and began walking in his direction.

/Oh shit, does she recognize me?/

JungKook barely had time to collect his bearings before she spoke. "Hey, you know the choreography, don't you?"

Clearly not ready for the unexpected interaction, JungKook's palms began to sweat. "Oh, uh, yeah I do but how did you know?"

JungKook didn't think it seemed possible, but her smile grew even wider as she explained, "You've been marking it since you showed up. Do you want to try it for real this time?"

"Well, actually-"

She made a gesture beckoning him to the dance floor. "It will be fun! I promise it isn't as scary as it looks."

Little did she know, stage-fright was the least of his worries. A smirk crawled up his face as JungKook stepped out from the audience and joined the dancer in the center of the circle. The audience, finally realizing what was happening, burst into wild cheering for the brave new-comer. The girl still held a smile to her face as she high-fived her new partner.

Reader POV:

You quickly knelt down to your speaker, rewinding "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" to the beginning and gave the boy a thumbs up. He returned the gesture and you supposed he was smiling under his mask from the way his eyes crinkled in excitement. You returned to your spot on the floor next to the newbie and knelt down. Following your action, the boy hovered his hands over your eyes, mimicking the exact pose in the ever-famous music video.

Both of you shot up off the ground, ready for the dramatic entrance and slowly nodded your heads in union to the music, before sliding yourselves into the next count of eight. From the corner of your eye, you spot him hitting every step, not daring to miss even a single beat.

/WOAH, okay so maybe he's not so much of a newbie.../ /But where on Earth did he learn to dance like that?/

You were right, he knew the choreography and he knew it like the back of his hand. His precision was breathtaking but you refused to be left in the dust. You began hitting your steps harder, cleaner foot-work, determination coursing through your blood. Peering over at him, it appeared your dancing had the same effect on him as well. His breath more labored, cheeks flushed the color of a beet. Both of you were pushing yourselves to your full potential. And absolutely loving every second of it. And apparently you weren't the only ones because the crowd cheered and screamed like never before, only giving you both more energy. Through the entire track, they ceased to decrease their volume. The song finally concluded, leaving you and the boy gasping for air, nearly collapsing from exhaustion. Even so, the sweat that flooded your clothes and the burning sensation searing your lungs didn't stop you from letting a joyful chuckle escape your lips. Releasing a laugh of his own, your temporary dance partner beamed up at you from where he sat on the concrete, still trying to regain his breath. Sweat coated the tips of his coconut hair and heat stained his ears red. You assumed you appeared similar but didn't bother to care. You managed to find the breath to ask, "Where did you learn to dance like that?"

"I think I'll keep that a secret." He said with a smirk before continuing to pant.

"With that kind of skill, I would too. Oh, by the way, I'm Y/N."

"Nice to meet you, but I refuse to believe I'm the only one with skill here," he replied.

You walked over to where he lounged on the floor and offered a hand up. He gladly accepted and you took the opportunity to ask, "I don't believe I've been told your name yet?"

"I think I'll keep that a secret too."

You smirk, he had just confirmed your assumptions. "Okay, so that means you're either a fugitive or an idol judging from the mask...and I'm pretty sure fugitives can't dance..."

His casual laughs are muffled by his face-mask. "Are you sure? I hear some can break dance almost as good as they break out of prison."

You immediately face-palm, sending the boy into bubbles of laughter. "I hope you realize how terrible that pun was."

"I should really stop learning how to flirt from my hyungs." He realized too late the weight his words held and regretted speaking instantly, nose flushing bright pink. You giggled and the boy-still flustered- checked his watch, eyes widening when he read the time. "Oh! I'm gonna be late! The members are waiting for me."

"So you /are/ an idol."

"Possibly." He flashed another shy smile.

And with that, he began fast-walking out of the clearing and crossed the street at the intersection. When reaching the other side of the road, he remembered something. Turning back around, he shouted in your direction, "Thank you, it was a pleasure dancing with you!" A few people passing by gave him confused looks but he paid no attention. You yelled back, "The pleasure was mine!" You waved him off and the nameless idol continued down the avenue without looking back.

•The next day...•

"... and as our top news story: BTS's JungKook was spotted yesterday in Seoul participating in a street dancer's performance as well as having further conversation with the stranger after-hand. Let's take a look at what footage was released..."

You have never moved so fast before in your life, shooting up from your desk with your mouth wide open, hardly believing what you were hearing. You stepped closer to the T.V. where the newscaster played footage taken of you and the idol dancing to "Blood, Sweat, and Tears." Your mouth dropped to the floor.

/NO WAY. NO FREAKING WAY./

The footage was shaky, taken in a hurry but there was no mistaking it. You and JungKook danced in the center, sweat dripping from your foreheads, faces as red as a tomato, but the wide smiles you two wore were the most prominent feature present. Both of you lost in the bliss of music, but knowing exactly what steps to take. Both of you so happily at peace. The video cuts away, leaving the news anchor alone at a desk and she proceeds reading off mundane news for the day. But you couldn't seem to hear her through your inner screams.

A Visit with Mikko Kääriäinen of Cardinals Folly

There's something about that voice. Mikko Kääriäinen (best known as Count Karnstein) of the Finnish band CARDINALS FOLLY croons like a stern master with ice water for blood. Dare not knock on the door of his estate seeking shelter from the tempest. His singing incites shivers as he wails and thrashes about, bemoaning the wiles of the devil and the fate of foodhardy thrill seekers. Mikko joined our own Stephanie V. Cantu for her podcast Crypt of Despair last year and I was eager to get to get a proper interview with him in these pages. Come with me now, into the shadows to a domain where doom is law and riffs conjure soul-stealing specters. This is the twisted realm of Cardinals Folly...

You draw significant inspiration from mysticism and the occult. What are your own beliefs about the supernatural? And while we're on the subject, have you ever encountered something uncanny, unearthly, or otherwise unexplainable?

I guess it's mere curiosity that has brought this devious individual and many others on the brink of great things. Teenage rebellion is a pathway to many things you will be able to truly understand later on, to expand your consciousness to unnatural levels. I believe in the devil as an ideal collaborator in spiritual rebellion -- a dark power of nature, relentless illumination, self-deification, and resistance of the right-hand path. A cultivated inspiration and idol for individuals like us. Of course, The Master will always take care of its own, the truly initiated and dedicated, and therefore things will always happen. From everyday charms to weirder incidents. I don´t want to pick out anything special, for it´s not about bragging how weird your life has been. That´s the naturality or unnaturality of this kind of mind -- you just live it. Nothing is that strange anymore. That´s almost like a Biblical term to me, at this point. Reference based on the many, the majority, what they would think.

Interesting. I’m guessing you’re well read on the occult. For the novice, what tomes would you recommend for reading? I’m guessing Dennis Wheatley’s novels will be among them, given the band's name.

Well, for someone willing to get both a factual and fictional overall briefing about the western esoteric and occult practices, I recommend the following starters:

How long have you been singing and playing bass? I'm curious about what lit the fire inside of you to get started with both.

I started everything with this band. I needed a vision of a band to make happen, to actually give a damn. Never been one of those bedroom metal musicians. Cardinals Folly and its early version symbolize my musical career. I simply started to play bass and sing when we started playing doom in 2004, without having any experience. To be honest, the more I see in this life, the more I like my choices. There´s a shitload of stagnated bands out there. Bands with members who can play, but are pretty clueless about anything else. I´m glad I had no specific pattern to start laboring when we started. I´ve learned it all myself along the way, which certainly suits me very well. I´m a person of my own. Our heaviest influence among traditional doom bands was Reverend Bizarre, when we started. Reverend Bizarre was emerging in Finland and it felt the closest thing to us. Of course, there are also typical old school legends like Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Cathedral, etc., but Reverend Bizarre was so present, especially in our early works. Now all that really remains from their influence is the cinematic gothickry, but that I love too much to ever let it go. Besides, it´s nothing that unusual in metal, generally. They just did it really well, I want to do it even better -- really combine the themes and the music.

Holocaust of Ecstasy & Freedom by Cardinals Folly

I admit I’m a little late to the game. The Coven was the original incarnation of Cardinal’s Folly, right?

You could say so. The idea didn´t change one bit and we simply continued with a new drummer and new moniker. Like I said, we were total newbies back then to everything regarding functioning as a band, so we made up a proper fitting name hastily in our excitement, without giving it too much thought. Our first drummer left and we got a new one, who was really into doom and very experienced with the underground. So we forged our visions stronger and had more artistic approach. I found the true name for us and we set the course to where we are today.

Around 2012-2013, there was a complete change of line-up. Was the future of Cardinals Folly in doubt at that point in time?

I´ve always been very demanding regarding people´s input in Cardinals Folly. I never chose to be the leader of the band. It came naturally, because of my level of ambition, temperament, and vision. Cardinals Folly is my baby, and I was never truly happy with the input of the previous members. Our guitar player had no time to really play in a band and since we took our name in 2007, our drummer had always had self-doubts about his playing and we always argued about many things. He´s a friend of mine still, and probably always will be, but we weren´t exactly the dream team, musically. I was always pushing forward and he was stalling.

With Juho joining in guitar around 2012 and Joni in drums 2014, we got the right dedicated members to push things forward. The future of Cardinals Folly has never truly been in doubt, as it´s always been a major creative outlet for me. But you can speculate if I had made it to this point without these guys. Probably not. The band would exist anyway, but you kind of need the lineup to truly make it something. After all, band life is about sharing our views, rehearsing, talking crap, playing live, doing records, drinking together -- that´s what it is to me.

So how did you come to meet your current partners, Juho and Joni? You’re the primary songwriter, naturally, so I’m curious how these two contribute to or otherwise enhance your musical ideas.

They both just answered the ads I had left. I really like that I didn´t take them into the band because of some guaranteed friendship. They weren´t old fishing buddies. That sort of thing is overrated, when it comes to band members. Also, if the band has ambition, it can fuck over the friendship or the friendship can fuck over the band, if you know what I mean. You need brutal honesty, sometimes. Making music like Cardinals Folly is about ambition and vision, so it doesn´t help one bit if you´re a great guy otherwise. Previous members were perfect examples of that.

Juho trained on a few songs on acoustic guitar over the weekend up north at his parents and returned early from his holiday to make it to the audition down south, where he nailed everything totally. Joni did the same, without missing a beat. The musical collaboration and understanding is on a very high level here. An exceptionally high level that even most pro musicians can´t reach with each other for different personal reasons. I´ve seen this. We can together spice up the original idea and structure for a song without changing the atmosphere or screwing anything over. We simply enrich it with good flavors. I or Juho come up with a few matching riffs and we complete the song usually as a group, throwing in riffs and fixing the arrangements for whole band. The original idea remains, but grows some muscle around itself.

Lyrics sometimes exist already before the song, but usually some interesting theme pops up after the feeling I get from the music and I finish the lyrics in a frenzy of inspiration from that. In my opinion, combining the music with the fitting and believable lyrics of a similar atmosphere is very important. If you fuck that up, you´re not in the game anymore. Our approach is similar and we talk the same “language,” because we´re not educated musicians, but three guys on a mission they all completely understand, both spiritually and musically. I feel we´re a real band -- a three-piece unit. We work everything together, despite of who wrote the original ideas. Nothing is ever personal. We understand our art and wish to push it forward. That is the priority in Cardinals Folly for us all, despite also being friends. It's very easy for me to say this, since it´s nothing, but a transcription of what happens in the world of Cardinals Folly nowadays.

You balk at trendiness in music, “laughing at stoner/retro trends as Cardinals Folly since 2007.” In “Hyperborean,” there is the declamatory “No Trends!” in the chorus. Obviously it’s an important sentiment to you.

It feels very natural to me, that a metal band not only plays hard, but also views hard. With my current understanding of the music I´m doing, I certainly wouldn't settle for less, in any way. This is my chosen lifestyle. Metal music in general is dominated by trends, which is understandable, but spoils the danger and excitement levels of this kinda music completely. I´ll be honest with you, I rarely even listen to new doom anymore. I do still get excited when I hear something totally ass-ripping, like the new Caskets Open album, for an example, but mostly you can predict the moves of the bands, even their behavior. The whole thing is just like my mom making a metal band, and as much as I love my mom, she´s not cut out for this. I feel I need to look elsewhere if I want inspiration. I´m over 30, but I´m still a rebel. I just don´t feel it enough.

Are you coming across many acts that are going their own way, perhaps even a little misunderstood? We’d love to know about bands in Finland, in particular, that have earned your respect and patronage.

Well, just to make it short by recommending some Finnish bands you might not know about: Caskets Open, Seremonia, Kohti Tuhoa, Vinum Sabbatum, Slave Hands, Chestburster and why don´t you also check out the Lithuanian band Hellhookah, because so far Arnas is the only one staying up and downing vodka later than I do! Great people, great band.

Coalition of the Anathematized by Cardinals Folly / Church of Void / Acolytes of Moros

Cardinals Folly has been prolific, releasing a new full-length every two years. Last year, you brought us virtually two albums worth of songs, if you include that fantastic split with Church of Void and Acolytes of Moros. Are you tapped out or do you have more songs in the works for us? If so, it would be amazing if you could give us a hint about the material you’re toying with.

Well, I would never consider us being “tapped out” at this point, regardless of the song situation, since we´re hungry and nasty bastards, one of the few bands actually living the shit! Every week we do something, be it rehearsal, studio, a live gig, or just sitting at a bar together, getting nutty ideas.

And to back this up, I will humbly say that our fourth album, Deranged Pagan Sons, which will wipe the floor with all our previous works, will be released in the fall of 2017 on CD via Nine Records and LP via Topillo Records. Fresh start with couple of up-and-coming Euro labels and the very finest we can offer. Eight tracks and 48 minutes of brutal, barbaric, heavy, in-your-face doom metal. The songs are the best, the sound is the best, and for the first fucking time ever, I don´t really even hate my vocals.

That’s awesome news! I think I speak for many when I say I can't wait to give the new record a spin. As we wrap up the conversation, anything you'd like to share with fans, or at least those who by now are becoming curious?

Later this year, you gotta face our new album in all its power. Join the doom metal cult Cardinals Folly and its ventures. Ride with the doomed ones! Retreating from it doesn´t do good for your metal credibility, so I suggest you open yourselves to it. Dance with the devil. It can´t be ignored anymore. We are going to blow off some steam and live to win, even if some boring jerks keep saying it´s a sin.

I just have to give a cheers to my dear Dad up there on Derby Day, who’s probably so thankful he’s exactly where he is today, knowing him and considering all things as they have been lately! Dogwood stable had a whopping eight horses in the Derby from 1991 - 2013. Second, third, fourth and beyond. My father never got that ultimate gold ring of horseracing. But he got closer than most in the history of the sport. We won the Preakness (Summer Squall), and we won the Belmont (Palace Malice), and a gazillion other important races with a continuous string of some of the top horses in the world along the way. Not only did he enter the game at a time when the old guard of American society and finance was well-ensconsed and befittingly claimed the Sport of Kings as their own. But Cot Campbell found an incredibly innovative way to break his way into the old game, initially much to the dismay of these old American families – the Vanderbilts Whitneys, Phipps, etc..- but that didn’t slow him down. He was a believer…. in his own dream. Not long after his idea was conceived and implemented and the green and gold silks were becoming a more familiar sight at the top racetracks around the country, the reality hit that he had actually changed the name of the game, and I dare say allowed for racing to continue as a modern sport that it is today. As he always said, necessity is the mother of invention! Cot Campbell therefore became known, for the span of his long prosperous career and for eternity in the horse racing world, as the “Pioneer of Thoroughbred Racehorse Syndication.” He always said to the press: I was the lucky one who stumbled into it! If I hadn’t, someone else surely would have. Second part may be truth, first part not so true. It was what he was built for. What he was made for - his destiny. His dad, another hero of mine for reasons I’ll go into another day, and his grandfather exposed him to horseracing back in the days of the great Kelso. Dad found his hero in the way of this big hearted, hard-trying beauty of a horse (look him up if you’re interested). With more exposure throughout his childhood, he fell in love with horses, and the risk and energy and every aspect of the classic romantic sport of horseracing that came with those powerful majestic animals barrelling down the racetrack. My beloved grandfather, Wild Bill Campbell, (Who I miss at times almost as much as my dad) had a horseracing stable for a brief stint called Shoestring Stable in historic Franklin, TN. When World War II broke out, there was a ban on unnecessary travel (um, how we all get that now in 2020 :-&!). He had just gotten his stable working on all cylinders and in full blown Go-mode - ready to ship these primed young racehorses off to the racetrack to do what they were born to do. Due to this poorly-timed government ban, Shoestring Stable went bankrupt before they ever broke out of the gate. But after experiencing days at the track with his grandfather and seeing his own father build and labor over his stable of racehorses (whether they raced or not), the love and passion for the sport was stamped in Cot Campbell’s blood from that time forward. A lot of history dots to be filled in after that in my father’s quite unorthodox life and early career, but one commonality for these two Campbell men was work in the fields of sportswriting, novel and guidebook and memoir writing, PR, and advertising. Believe me, there are endless (now funny)lesson-loaded stories between the two of them and their respective careers full of stunts and stints working in every possible kind of position and situation but I’ll continue on for now and revisit those on another interesting day. I was fortunate enough to work for my dad for seven years in the Dogwood Stable office (a beautiful white Victorian house with a wrap-around porch) in Aiken, SC as PR Director. My dad did not believe in nepotism. I had to deserve the job and got no special treatment or pay. And it was a highly sought-after job whenever it happened to open up. I called him 'Cot' when I was on duty, like the rest of his employees. This job was one of the most rewarding and most challenging experiences of my life. A lot was demanded and especially when we had an entry in a Triple Crown race, and even more especially when we had a favorite. Crazy, energetic bustling times. A bonus was getting to know so many members of the national sports press personally who have since become lifelong friends. That position as one of the Top 10 Horseracing stables in the country for a long time required it. EightDerby horses required it! My dad was a very smart businessman in everything that he touched....once he stopped drinking. At age 31. That decision changed his life. As it can sure do. That's another accomplishment of his I am inordinately proud of. He went on to help endless friends and strangers make that same decision for themselves. He only attended AA in the beginning of his sobriety but was a strong believer in and advocate for the program until he died, even saying he thought the best 'church' out there was AA.
