Odesta Week Day 2: Take Me Out Tuesday
Finnick’s spent plenty of time in District Thirteen dissociating, but at least this time it’s for a good reason.
He has Annie in his arms again, and they’ve backed themselves against a wall and have started to slump down. He doesn’t care that they’re on the floor, just like she doesn’t care that his fingers are tangled in her long hair. They’ll deal with that stuff later.
It’s not until after they’ve done their fair share of crying and kissing that Finnick asks, “So, what do you want to do?”
Annie’s eyes are gleaming and her smile is practically blinding, but he thinks she’s never looked better. “I want to take you out, obviously.”
“I know you just got here,” he says, and presses another quick kiss to her mouth, “but there’s not really a lot of date night options—”
That’s as far as he gets before the blade of her knife tears through his gut.
The first thing Finnick thinks is that the blood is coming out faster than it should. He’s seen a lot of blood. He’s watched a lot of tributes bleed out on the grass or sand or snow or gravel. But his mind is cloaked in a fuzziness that he can’t shake, and for some reason, he can’t seem to focus on his own blood as it seeps into his clothes.
Finnick’s eyes eventually focus on Annie. He wants to reach for her hand and tell her that he’ll be fine, and there’s no way she’s getting rid of him that easily. Not after they just got each other back. But Annie’s not even looking at him. Her eyes are cold and impassive, but what strikes him most is the clarity. She knows what happened, and she’s standing here like it’s just another Tuesday for her.
Then his eyes travel down her body, where her hand is still gripping a bloodied knife.
This is when Finnick realizes that something is very, very wrong.
He probably should have seen it sooner, but between the blood loss and betrayal, it’s hard to accept. That can’t be Annie.
Someone comes over to take Annie away, and Finnick slips into darkness.
***
He tries to keep track of the voices he hears around him, but it quickly becomes impossible. They must have Finnick on morphling because his world is hazy and soft.
“Open your eyes.”
He’s not so sure he wants to. Who’s going to be waiting to stab him this time?
“Finnick, come on.”
That’s a voice he recognizes. Finnick’s eyes peel open involuntarily. Even now, he’s not good at sitting still. “Johanna?”
“Yeah,” she says. She’s sitting on a chair by his hospital bed, looking like she’d rather be anywhere else. “They let me out of the hospital just to talk to you. Lucky me.”
“Talk to me about what?” he asks, blinking against the fluorescent lighting.
Johanna doesn’t mince her words. “When we were in the Capitol, they messed with Annie’s mind. Turned her against you. They did it with Peeta too.”
“I don’t understand,” says Finnick. Maybe it’s that he doesn’t want to understand.
“It’s called hijacking. Something with tracker jacker venom, I don’t know. And before you lose your mind over this, she’s already showing signs of progress. More than Peeta, anyway. Probably because she’s older.”
His head is spinning. There’s way too much going on right now and not enough morphling in the world to deal with it. In all of his nightmarish scenarios his mind ran through while Annie was in the Capitol, Finnick hadn’t ever considered this. Turning Annie against him feels impossible somehow, even though he’s sitting in a hospital bed with bandages wrapped tight against his abdomen where she stabbed him.
“What do we do?” he asks after a second, voice hoarse. “How do we help her get better?”
“Do I look like a doctor?” Johanna asks, and Finnick gives a shrug. “Look, some of the doctors suggested writing a note. It might trigger positive memories of you without you actually being in stabbing vicinity.”
It’s a good enough idea for him, so Finnick spends the next half hour trying to procure a pen and some paper. Figuring out what to write takes a lot less time. It’s an old poem he wrote for her when she turned twenty, and they invited all of Victor’s Village to a party on her boat. Thinking of that day still makes him smile. Kai, the second oldest resident of the Village, had gotten Annie a year long supply of cat food. It’s a very practical gift for someone who has a cat, which Annie doesn’t.
He sends the poem along with Johanna and waits and waits for some kind of response. His note is delivered back to him not even a full day later, and Finnick is fully ready to let his mind slip away when he notices shaky handwriting on the back.
Still a better gift than the cat food.
#sorry yall i didn't realize people were writing long stuff for this#so these are all going to be short haha#but i hope you enjoyed!#ofc i was going to do the death option bc i never let anyone chill out#this was fun to write and an interesting au#maybe i will explore it more in the future who knows#odesta#odesta week#annie cresta#finnick odair#thg fic#thg#the hunger games

would be interested to hear about how you come up with character names! (for the Ravinstill family and other OCs) i'm a big fan of the thg canon naming cultures and when i see a fic writer going for some of the ancient roman deep cuts i'm excited about that haha
You know fun fact I was just talking to someone about this! @persephoneprice, hope you don't mind the @ but while some of this is a rehash of what I told you already, maybe some of the other stuff/examples can help you out!
Anyway, the first step is always to figure out the main things about the character! Since thg characters generally have pretty on the nose names for a lot of the characters, then it's useful to know what their purpose in the story/their character trajectory is.
A lot of the time, I play a weird game of word association. If I need multiple names, I usually try to stick to a theme. If the theme isn't really strong, or I can't think of one, then I try to pick whether I want the name to be Greek or Roman (this is specifically for Capitol names).
The best way to illustrate how I come up with names is to just provide examples:
My Ravinstill Naming Convention
With the Ravinstills (the family tree post), Felix having a name meaning "fortunate" and not being lucky at all (in my interpretation) influenced how I named his grandfather, Albanus. He's named for an alternative way to refer to the city of Alba Longa which in myth/the Aeneid is the city that Ascanius founds as a precursor to Romulus and Remus founding Rome. It's meant to be ironic in that Maximinius prioritizes the Capitol to basically the detriment of everything else ultimately, and Aeneas in the Aeneid does the same thing leading to the foundation of Lavinium -> Alba Longa -> Rome. But also the idea of Alba Longa as a precursor to the founding of Rome (essentially saying it comes before Rome, and Rome as metaphor for HG's Capitol) <- when I said naming was a game of word association. This is what I meant.
I named Felix's father Ascanio (which obviously comes from Ascanius) to draw a stronger connection between him and Albanus than his other siblings, but gave him the Italian version of the name to differentiate him from his family.
I try to name the rest of the Ravinstills after pre-Roman Republic inspired names (although some names have some overlap like Junius and Tullius). A couple of them are also named for Trojans (Creusa and Kassandra), or Aeneas' connection to Aphrodite (Cythera). Sabina is named for the territory of the ancient Sabine people who bordered Latium.
Felix's mom (Metaneira) is named for a queen who accidentally stops her son from becoming immortal and is the only one besides the Ravinstills who survive the Dark Days to have a name that isn't related to the Aeneid/pre-Republic Rome in some direct way. In a way, her different naming convention also sets her apart.
Marius and Gnaeus are named for Gaius Marius and Gnaeus Pompey of the Late Roman Republic, because in my mind, I was comparing Snow to Caesar and wanted them to be named for Roman politicians/generals who rose to power and fell from it around the same time as Caesar, and people always talk about Marius and Pompey before getting to the Julius Caesar history class section. Also Coriolanus is sometimes thought to be called Gnaeus Marcius Coriolanus (but Gnaeus could also just be Gaius), and I think the similarities in name are fun, because those two were always meant to be tbosas' Coriolanus' (one-sided) political rivals before I decided anything else for them.
Other Thoughts
The Capitol also seems to have a tendency to have either simple surnames (typically words) or fancier/surnames.
Simple: Snow, Price, Creed, Moss, Click, Trinket, Crane, Fling
Fancier: Heavensbee, Ravinstill
There's also the average American sounding surnames: Anderson, Breen, Canville, Phipps (?)
Fabrica What-Not seems to be an outlier in the surname department, but she does prove you can go wild with them if you want, but if you don't want your OC standing out with their surname, then you can try to come up with one that fits those above categories. If you're not making a Capitol OC, then I recommend just comparing the common conventions for surnames (or also first names) and trying to follow those in whatever District or location you're OC is from.
Or if you don't mind making your OC related to a canon character, you can just steal their surname (thank you, minor character Satyria Click for your service to my OCs).
I've rambled about my other OC names in author's notes on my fics, but if you don't want to dig through those author's notes (they're long and there a lot of them), feel free to ask about specific ones!
Thanks for the ask! I hope this is coherent!

Hi Steph! how about 7 and 10? and one of questions you're hoping someone asks?
hi rach!!!!! <3
7. tell us about the plot of the first fanfic you ever wrote
the oldest thing i could find that i actually saved to my google drive (i deleted lots of things i used to write) was a sirius black x reader oneshot where the reader gets stick and sirius is dramatic about it, LOL. it's so weird to imagine a time when i pretty much only read & wrote x reader stuff! (and weird to imagine a time when i thought sirius black was straight????? haha). (p.s. ALL of my old fanfic is scrubbed from the internet thank GOD)
10. at what point in the process do you come up with titles, and how easy or hard is that for you?
like 85% of the time i come up with the title before i ever start writing--or the title actually inspires a lot of the plot (this is especially true with song lyric titles). otherwise, i find it to be such a struggle to find the right title after the fact! i've started keeping a list of song lyrics/poem lines/etc that would be good fic titles so it's easier when i'm stuck hahaha
100. open question to the writer
it was so hard to come up with a question for myself!! i'm gonna go with: what other fandoms have you ever thought about writing for?
i currently have one WIP for the hunger games fandom that i open up and chip away at once every few months. waiting for the day when the THG brainrot eclipses the TLOU brainrot, and it hasn't happened yet! i also have a Prospect x TLOU crossover fic that's basically all outlined, but none of it is written. a few months before TLOU HBO premiered, i planned to write a steve harrington x OC longfic?! it was all drafted and everything. weird to think about lol.
thanks for playing the ask game!

BOOK SPOILERS:
Ok, soooo, not saying this was bad or anything but who’s with me on the “I feel like they’ve reduced Thalia and Luke’s closeness before annabeth as a family unity in here to maybe make him less redeemable”? I mean I know it’s also a tool in narrative in case we never get to see Thalia but - it’s kinda like how when adapting gale hawthorne in THG they had to make him angrier and less morally grey as to solve the “triangle” with less of a divide.
I just really dislike the order of the sentence “Thalia didn’t make it (first) BUT Annabeth and I did and we are family ever since (after Thalia, like this dude isn’t at least 70% motivated by his tree hugger ass)”? It’s not just the ship thing (tho yo if u turn into a tree and then a guy raised a war against the gods because of u and then he dies and u give up on men entirely maybe that’s u know a romantic Greek tragedy) but also because so much of Annabeth’s romantic feelings for Luke and his power over her are NOT just based on her sisterly love but on how he knows it’s not sisterly love and how it he has never seen annabeth that way because it has always been Thalia and him adopted annabeth. The show could have reduced this too because age gaps and stuff but my man, my man: Luke would never see Annabeth that way and it IS a lot to do with Thalia and their family unity and a lot of what he does (the whole sea of monsters book) is just a tangent to HAVE HER BACK.
“Oh u need this girl back from the dead to mess up the prophecy? Sure titans I will totes do it haha no second intentions at all lol. Son of Hermes are known for honesty especially me now excuse me while I manipulate demigods, gods and titans to get Thalia back….FOR THE CAUSE HAHA. The cause.” The cause is he breaking the system again because Luke only picks sides to be a winner himself. And his winning narrative has his girls with him.
EDIT: oh forgot to mention: the thing with Thalia and Luke for Annabeth’s character writing is exactly that she is so so young and naive that her whole thing with LUke (that he uses over her) is that she is too young so he sees her as a little sister when LUKE AND THALIA CLEARLY HAVING FEELINGS FOR EACH OTHER showcases just how naive and young and even annabeth’s hubris. She was so young and blinded that she didn’t even see the very obvious dynamic. And if u think this is just me ranting about a ship that doesn’t actually exist please let me remind you that riordan sold a whole book of short stories leading with Luke’s diary tales and his time with Thalia.
Thalia and Luke and their motives, hidden feelings and journeys/destinations are actually a major plot point AND shines a giant light on Annabeth’s own shortcomings and growth arcs that go beyond trusting Luke blindly. Arguably, Luke liking Thalia and having her be disrespected by the gods sets in motion the whole first series.
Luke is a handsome, talented, charismatic, and CLAIMED demigod. Aside from his time running and his cabin being crowded what would make him angrier and selfish to the point of joining the titans? Would anyone say I dunno THE FACT THAT THE GODS KILLED THE ONE PERSON HE LOVED AND CARED FOR ABOVE ANYONE ELSE AND THAT WAS RECEIVED WITH GRATITUDE BECAUSE WOW A PROTECTING MAGICAL TREE? COOL.
Opinions?
The ultimate betrayal.

SOME WIPS
Oh, that’s fun. I was tagged by @katnissmellarkkk and @jhsgf82 and I must say GIRLS I’m shocked of your lists of wips lol. You are so productive! I wish you endless inspiration! ❤️
Ah, the rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. I have deemed that this isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? DnD campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!!
Ok, first of all, I don’t have many wips because I’m that kind of person who should start and finish something soon or it will be abandoned forever lol. So I try to finish every illustration or delete it if I can’t finish it immediately. Unfinished illustrations make me nervous. But I still have some! I will list only ones that I actually have started drawing and have at least a rough sketch of it.
Work/BMC/Patreon:
1. Draco+ferret
2. Mafia porn lol lol lol
3. Biker!Peeta
Personal stuff:
1. First kiss / everlark
2. Three blondes (Donner twins and the apothecary daughter) / I did this sketch around the time I posted sqq generation line up (sometime in 2020) and I’m not sure I will ever finish it
3. Victory Tour, District 7 red dress comic / hot hot hot 🥵
4. Dark!Peeta portrait / not sure I will finish it
5. No unicorns ff / super old sketch that I don’t like but can’t delete also lol
6. Haymitch selfie/ for INSTAPANEM
7. Nervous / there was a challenge among thg fan artists and I fail to meet the deadline
8. Mr.&Mrs. Mellark kitchen fun / early days
9. A Man for All Seasons / ff
10. Rye bakery
11. Rye & Peeta wrestling
12. The Act poster
13. Everlark kiss animation / probably will never finish because animation is hard!
14. Everlark outfits, district 5, Annie’s wedding dress
Lol. I said I don’t have many wips and here we are. But honestly almost all of these illustrations are on suuuuper rough stage and will probably never be finished. Except for The Act and Everlark Outfits. Ugh.
I won’t tag anyone because I’m sure everyone already did it but if not please join! That’s actually fun and even helps to organise things haha ❤️

curious, what late-2000s YA other than thg do you like?
HAHA well i guess most of it is just stuff i read at the time so it’s stuff i liked when i was 10 years old… so not sure how much of it holds up honestly. i haven’t reread most of it in ages. but i loved all the books from that era like uglies, suzanne’s gregor series, the original grisha trilogy, city of ember (city of ember was the series that got me into fanfiction which is a #cursed fact about me). and i mean… obviously pjo, we can’t talk about me and ya fiction without bringing up pjo. i just feel like the 2000s were such a peak for ya especially ya fantasy and im very grateful for it because a lot of those books were what got me into reading in the first place!!

AHHHHHH! GUYS!
If you write fanfiction, pleeeeease, you don’t have to put “ (time skip because I’m bad at writing (insert insecurity)” because that’s what fanfiction is here to solve! It’s okay to be insecure, obviously, about any aspect of your writing. But if you don’t practice writing that, then you won’t develop any confidence and that part of your writing will plateau and not improve. In other words— you’ll stay just as insecure about it as you are now, for as long as you don’t allow yourself to practice writing it.
Now, I’m not saying you have to publish scenes that you aren’t proud of. That is just a catalyst to a whole different set of issues. But practice writing the types of scenes you’re least confident at writing, and keep them in a private place until you gain enough experience that you might feel ready to publish scenes of that type. If you don’t get there anytime soon, that’s fine too. It can take time.
But you don’t have to tell your readers that you’re insecure about anything. You don’t owe us that vulnerability. If you don’t feel comfortable writing a fight scene, or publishing it, that’s fine! You don’t have to put your reason for timeskipping in parenthesis— you don’t even have to outright tell us about a timeskip! Even just seeing: *timeskip* or (timeskip brought to you by (insert witty one-liner)) is jarring and hurts the flow of your story. You can build timeskips into your works as PART of your story. For example, let’s say I am a writer who is not confident at all about writing romance (spoiler: This is actually a weakness of my own, and part of the reason THG is a romance story— I’m practicing). Let’s set up a basic scene and timeskip without breaking the scene.
—————-
*sample start*
Marinette took a deep breath, looking in the mirror as she analyzed her appearance with all of the scrutiny of a perfectionist fashion designer. That is to say, she kept straightening the same piece of hair for the last five minutes even though her entire look was spotless, perfect but if only that one strand could lie five degrees to the right...
The sound of the doorbell made the girl jump, and she scrambled for her purse before nearly breaking her ankle in her rush to get to the door. She swung it open, beaming at her date on the other side. “Hello! Hi! Wow you’re gorgeous— ignore that I said that! Uh, yeah, haha,” she ended up just shoving that stubborn strand of hair behind her ear before giving her— date? Significant other? She didn’t know yet— a lopsided smile. “Uh, ready to go?”
Several hours that included a romantic dinner, stroll down a particularly scenic route, and lots of talking later, Marinette’s date stopped in front of her apartment complex. The pigtailed girl looked up at them with wide eyes, caught off guard as they placed a single, sweet kiss on her cheek before winking. Marinette thought they might have said proper goodbyes— probably, since the next thing she knew she was inside her room sitting on her bed— but all she could remember solidly was giving the empty air a dopey smile as her fingertips brushed where her crush’s lips had been.
— — — *end sample*— — —
See? Just cut off at a point where you feel comfortable, and then bring the story back into focus without specifically stating that there was a time skip. Your readers will pick up on it, and they don’t need to know why it’s there. Maybe you time slipped in order to save writing time or to gloss over parts you deem unimportant and focus on the good stuff. If you timeskipped because you’re not quite happy with how you write that particular type of scene but still want to move the story forward, nobody needs to know. For all the readers know, you timeskipped as an artistic choice. Just zoom back in on the story where you feel comfortable picking up from the aftermath of a scene. If the two sentences (the one before and the one after the timeskip) don’t mesh well enough, you can just add a page break like the ones I used above to separate the sample from the rest of this post, and it does the job just fine without any words attached. Some examples of timeskip sentences include:
For fight scenes:
It took a while, and left (character) panting from exertion, but finally it was over. They leant their body weight on the wall beside them as they tried to regain their breath, eyes raking the skyline to survey the aftermath.
“Uuuuugh,” (character) groaned, arm covering their eyes. They had several new bruises on their body, but were overall intact. “That sucked.”
A bright light enveloped the scene after the drawn-out battle, signifying it’s overdue conclusion. (Character) dropped to the ground, slapping their hand over a still-bleeding wound in their side. That could have gone better, they thought— but it also could have been much, much worse.
For romance scenes:
(Character) dropped face-first onto their sofa only two hours later, groaning. “That. Was a. Disaster.”
The sun was just beginning to set, sending a mango-smoothie highlight over (Character)’s front door as (Romantic interest) took their head in their hands and captured their lips in a passionate kiss. Pulling away, (romantic interest) grinned, pressing their forehead gently against (character)’s. “Today was wonderful.”
The door clicked closed, the sound of the lock sliding into place deafening in the after-midnight silence. Then the silence slid back in for a moment before a delighted squeal tore through it once more, (character) jumping up and down in pure elation.
For business or profession-specific scenes:
(Character) loosened their tie and reclined back in their chair. The meeting was over, sure, but damn did it sap their energy.
It took hours of arguing and lots of pinches on the bridge of their nose, and maybe lots of silent cursing out of the imbeciles they worked with, but eventually (character) was able to knock some sense into the room of gathered “experts.”
(Doctor character) peeled their gloves off as procedure demanded; grip by the wrist, pull so it turns inside-out. Grab opposite glove by the wrist and pull, leaving the first bloody glove inside the second and chucking the messy bundle in the nearest trash can. That... could have gone better.
“I knew I shouldn’t have worn the white shirt,” (character) groused as they shoved their way out of (food establishment) after their shift. Said shirt was now thoroughly stained with different ingredients and who knows what else— (character) didn’t even want to guess. The whole shift was a blur of monotonous rushing. For eight. Hours.
So on and so forth! If you have a particular type of scene you are insecure writing and want some timeskip-line inspiration, feel free to ask me! I will do my best to provide examples like above for you to make your own or just gain inspiration from. I hope this helped!

Hi @julesherondalex
I’ve been following you for what feels like ages and all of your Elriel fics make me feel so gooey and warm (in the best way of course)🥺💕
I was wondering:
What inspires you to write?
Which authors do you look up to (in terms of writing or story etc.)?
Any writing pet peeves?
Have a wonderful rest of your day and I hope you’re staying safe✨
Hi! 💕 Thank you sm for the sweet words 🥰 As for your q's:
What inspires me to write is the feeling I want to get across. I write best when I'm moved by something. The things that move me are books, TV shows, movies, experiences or fictional pairings with heartbreaking romance potential (see: my elriel fics hehe). I also simply like writing in itself and putting together stories. 💕
I certainly love SJM's style. I think it's rich and unique, which is something I try to accomplish with my writing as well. I also tend to love poetic, heartfelt styles such of Tahereh Mafi, Laini Taylor or Colleen Hoover. Sabaa Tahir has some killer lines that also punch you in the gut. And I adore Sally Thorne's writing in THG because I swooned and laughed my ass off reading that book. Then there are JKR and Suzanne Collins. They're simply badass. 👌🏼
One of the things I don't like of the writing process is how I tend to exaggerate the effort of writing. I mean, if you have bazillion other things to do it's simply easier to end up watching a show instead. Writing is going to cost energy. Can lack of motivation be a pet peeve? 😁 Other than that, it's plotting and plot holes for me. I know stuff I want to write but I don't like filling the inbetween. 😂 I hate noticing plot holes after posting a fic. 🤪
Hope this helped and wasn't overwhelming haha 💙 ty again and I hope you have an amazing day 😘

Hello! I have a quick question for you. You have mentioned Forbidden books in Invictus. Can you elaborate what they are? In terms of why are they forbidden? I'm a bit confused if this is a book canon thing since I did not read them or the severity of one having them in their possession.
Hey! I don’t think it’s mentioned in the books but it’s a classic tool of a controlling government. Books will be censured because they carry ideas that are not good for dictatures with like freedom, republics, putting something over the nation etc etc. Or even written by countries you’re at war with. When Nazis were in power, they used to burn that kind of books (although they didn’t invented the trend), it’s a way to control the population’s mind, to make sure they will only read pre-approved stuff that helps the dictature in place. They encourage you to go and burn the books, they made it a party, you want to participate because you’re taught those books are the devil incarnated.
In thg specifically, I hc a lot of old philosophical, political and maybe even historical texts would be forbidden and “replaced” by a sanctioned versions of them because that’s often what happens. Some novels would be banned entirely. Like... For instance, any text claiming men are born and remain free and equals in rights, that’s a no started in a place like Panem simply because it doesn’t fly with the “Capitols are better than Districts, Districts are little more than dogs” ideology.
So basically, it’s not canon but it’s an extrapolation based on historical precedents, the theory for which seems to be confirmed in TBOSAS since it’s clear The Hanging Tree is banned exactly because it’s trop controversial, hinting that they do control Panem’s culture to a point. And that was 60 years before THG and Snow is in power so I can only guess it gets worse during canon time.
Now I don’t really see the District people being into books because their education is very goal oriented (the mines for instance) and it’s likely a lot of them either don’t know how to read or have difficulties - that’s also a tool to control a body of people, block their access to education to keep them as cheap labor - so only victors or maybe wealthier people in each District would be able to have books but for the Capitols themselves it’s extra important, it’s making sure the Capitol citizens all are made of the same mold, that the “human hierarchy” ideology prevails no matter what.
When a government controls the culture, uses censure to “protect” its citizens from influence, you know it’s a dictature, that’s just a fact. So the punishment is harsh because it’s equivalent to treason, because it leads to thinking by yourself, to rebellion, because if one person breaks out of the mold and reaches another one, it spreads (like fire, see what I did here, haha).
In my hc most Capitols don’t really care for those forbidden books because not only are they taught they are bad but who cares for moldy century old books when you can watch a movie about the glory of Capitols heores? And those who do care collect them like prized things rather than an object of subversion. For instance, Tadius in my stories tends to collect them and lock them away, Haymitch hides them in plain sight like a taunt (mostly because nobody in Twelve cares or would make a difference with a random book) and is known to read them when Tadius just like possessing something priceless. I’m sure some Capitols are also into the books for the enlightenment but mostly it would all be about having something rare and forbidden and supra expensive. It adds a thrill, I guess. Snow might also let those secret book circulation happen because the risks are minimal and it allows him to see which influential people has “breaking the law” tendencies in his city. And if those people end up poisoned... Well.
If you’re interested and you’re into movies, I’d recommend watching V for Vendetta because there’s a bit about how the culture is controlled and used to control if I remember right. Also The Book Thief, it’s closer to what I go for and it’s awesome. If you’re not really into reading the book, I can say the movie is faithful enough and it’s one of my favorite stories.
But basically, this is an extension of propaganda tactics. When you control the movies/books/art, you control the minds of a nation.

I respectfully disagree with Katniss being a Boring “Strong” Girl™. She’s a trauma-ridden teen with a mother unable to care for her kids, forced to partake in a mass-murder contest for rich folk’s fun. The films kinda diminish her to a more standard Action Girl a la Hermione being reduced to a superhuman badass in the HP films instead of the abrasive, complex human she is. Katniss is nuanced in the books at least. She’s emotionally stunted and it’s treated as a negative (though not her fault).
Yeah that’s what I mean when I say that Katniss was an acquired taste for me. She was the first narrator I’ve read to have such a constant bitter and grieving tone, and that put me off initially. Then I read the books again in high school and it made a lot more sense, plus the initial hype train was dying down. I think many of the resultant action girls that piggybacked on Katniss between like 2009 and 2015 ended up emulating all the surface-level parts of her character without the stuff that made her so effective and thematic because of the movies. The scripting and JL’s portrayal of Katniss is much flatter than book Katniss, plus I feel like Katniss’s characterization and her perspective and worldview are so hard to capture compared to characters we only saw through her eyes and were translated better by actors with different styles from JL. Like, movie Johanna isn’t much like how I imagined her to look or express herself in the books but her performance steals every scene she’s in. Movie Finnick and Prim are pretty similar to how I remember them from the books, and Claflin balances that classic Finnick charisma with underlying fear and desperation. But Katniss? Everything that was so integral about her for so many readers got the typical Hollywood treatment. Book fans saw “impoverished WOC who is forced to illegally hunt game for her family and is violently exploited/fetishized/commoditized alongside countless other young people so that privileged people can watch reality TV and the 99% can stay disempowered.” Publishers and Hollywood took that to mean J.LAW AS A BOW-AND-ARROW GIRL IN THE MIDDLE OF A LOVE TRIANGLE! FLASHY ACTION AND BOLD MAKEUP LOOKS! WE CAN MILK THE SHIT OUT OF THIS! So then all these white stabby/shooty women started showing up as book/show/movie protagonists or love interests :/.
Good point about Hermione. Movie Hermione is EM/WATS WITH ARTFULLY MESSY HAIR WHO SAVES THE DAY AND HAHA ISN’T IT FUNNY THAT SOMETIMES SHE BOSSES HARRY AND RON AROUND. Book Hermione is “ride-or-die, fearsome, authoritative MuggleBorn with frizzy hair and crooked teeth who faces bullying and violence due to her blood status despite being the most passionate and innovative Hogwarts student, advocating for equality among all magical beings, and literally saving the entire school from imploding at least three times every year.” The movies did flatten Harry and Hermione in a bunch of ways, but compared to how they did Ron and Ginny sooooo dirty I guess I just appreciate that they didn’t do the same to Harry and Hermione. So Hermione’s adaptation works better for me than Katniss’s does.
Anyway, this became a rant on the HP and THG movies but my point is that yeah, I agree with you that book Katniss is a super interesting and 3D character compared to some YA protagonists that cashed in on the dystopian craze for all the wrong reasons. Luckily Hermione’s character didn’t spam YA with weak bookworm copycats based on what publishers thought readers wanted to see, because technically HP ended a bit before YA really took off. Hollywood has a way of mechanizing beloved characters so they can be more accessible to their most valued (read: privileged) fanbases. Then all other entertainment platforms get fucked up because we keep getting fed the same narrative instead of something fresh or nuanced.

Crash an burn anon here! This may take a while so I'm sorry if it ends up being a whole bunch of messages. There's a book by Joe Abercrombie called Red Country, which is part of a pretty big body of work all taking place in the same story. (Side note, if you like Game of Thrones, I will 100% recommend Abercrombie. Less blatant magic, but I personally find the Politics to be much more interesting. Also he focuses less on Important Families and just picks characters from all stations (1 of ?)
(2 of ?) of life to follow for the stories, usually a few for each book, which I tend to like better as a way of exploring Big Expansive fictional worlds). ANYWAY. In Red Country, there's a point where the focus characters come to whats basically an Old West style frontier town, which is owned basically 50 50 by the characters I ran into shipping. They're pretty minor characters but I tend to latch onto minor characters so I'm not surprised at myself for that. It's like as soon as I don't
(3 of ?) don't know much about a character I want to explore them more. In canon, there's pretty much no romantic or sexual subtext, they both just want total control of the town and by extension any further settlements in the region, because it's currently the furthest out of the "unclaimed" territory. Hence the wannabe-dictators comment. In canon, one of them ends up winning at the expense of the lives of a pretty solid percentage of the town's population and the life of the rival
(4 of ?) and later expresses dissatisfaction because within a few months of taking total control they find theyve come to miss the political tension that came with said rivalry. (I'm being super vague here because gendered pronouns would in fact be spoilers and I'd rather keep those to a minimum in case anyones interested). Those two are basically the only ones I've come to actively ship in Abercrombie's work that I've read bc again romance is not a major portion, but the impulse is like
(5 of 5) looking at a powder keg and going "oh boy, what if I dropped this directly into that fire over there to watch what happens". Just give that whole disaster an extra layer of Complicated As Fuck and Catastrophic for both those two and BASICALLY THE ENTIRE TOWN. Fun times!
Hey, crash and burn anon! Sorry it took me a couple of days to get to you. My lower back was hurting like a bitch and I didn’t feel like being on tumblr too much.
Thank you for the rec, but I probably won’t be reading it. I just don’t really gravitate towards that genre at all, and I only started reading asoiaf because I was watching the TV show and I was alerted to the fact that some stuff are much better in the books. (Like say, the Dornish plan, which was completely erased in the TV show. And also like. There’s way less rape, at least with the main female characters.) But hey, if anyone else wants to read it!
I totally get wanting to explore unexplored characters! I once started writing a whole fanfic about Johanna Mason from THG, including her backstory up to and including the end of Mockingjay, that was canon compliant, up to a point. It was going to be Finnick/Johanna, because I lowkey ship them. And Finnick was going to live. And that was entirely based off one line: “They can’t hurt me, there’s no one left I love.”
Also, yeah your ship sounds loads of fun! Good luck with it, and just block/ignore antis, haha!

I actually started following you because of hunger games lol. You're the one who got me shipping JonxSansa with all your reblogs during season 6. I was a regular watcher and read the first two books but never shipped anyone on GoT. So curse you! Haha but thanks because of you I got to discover some great fics and a new fandom!
Yay! I love my THG folks! I feel like I’m ride or die with that crew. And bringing people to the ship is the BIGGEST compliment. Sorry not sorry? Lol :D We have such talented people writing for the ship. You can read and read and never run out of good stuff. (Well, you could try!)

i remember before i was on tumblr, when i liked 50000 fandom pages on fb (mostly hp & thg, but other stuff too), and i remember that a mod from one posted smth abt "sending your kids to bed early so you can work more on that smutty fanfic you're writing" and its like *nervous laugh* yeah okay haha many people here are like 12 but ok haha. i know you can have kids and be 20 (or younger ofc), but it was posted as some kind of relatable mom meme thing, it was weird, even though we all knew abt smut

Salvaged infodump
Once upon a time, THG was hosted on late MSPAF. On top of various shenanigans, the thread was also a good source of hints, most of which weren’t posted elsewhere. Unfortunately, i realised a few months too late to start preserving it, so in the end out of 69 pages there are about eleven missing. Tidbits are organised in chronological order, with links pinpointing the exact timeframe when applicable.
117-125
Character interaction is a big part of this adventure- treat the people you meet one way, and you'll get one result, and treat them another way, and you'll get a different one- it could even lead to a death of a character if you aren't careful. So yes, decisions about how you behave towards fellow kidnappees will be pretty important! Choose your friends wisely...
Also, yes, symbols on the doors correspond to symbols on the keycards. Only the keycard with that symbol can open a door with that symbol. The doors can't be opened in any other way except for the administrative override.
126-131
Haha, let's just say our antagonist has a thing for details. I wanted to include a line where the guy noted that all the information was known beforehand, the whole procedure was just to verify it, but it sounded awkward with the rest of the monologue, so I left it out.
And yes, it is very important! Think of The Walking Dead Video Game- in case you don't know, the decisions you make in that game towards the people around you can determines things like whether they'll betray you or not, help you or not, etc. The "social links" that Kate and her fellow kidnappees will have will be very vital towards future events (and its all in the audience's hands, seriously, I'm not going to decide who the characters gets close to). I might even make a small "summary of relationships" at the end of each part of the story, just to see where its strong and where it's lacking among our protagonists.
143-149
Though I have a note about this guy you might want to take into consideration! Half of his lineage is European, and half of his lineage is East Asian. This is a pretty big influence on his life (you'll see much later just exactly how), but yeah, just something to keep in mind, perhaps!
175 As reported by LuvianBlue:
AUTHOR HERE to impart a few maybe-helpful hints to understanding what those symbols mean!
They DO mean something. What they mean, however, won't really be elucidated until well into the adventure. Also, there IS a pattern to them and the way they are arranged (the picture Lawsome provided shows the correct "order" of them), and maybe later, as further details are revealed, you'll smack your forehead and realize that it was kind of clear what they were meant to be all along. Maybe.
The same goes for the characters. Each character is tied to his or her symbol more than just by wearing the same color. Things like personality, backstory, motifs and themes surrounding them...they match the meaning of their symbol in more ways than one.
I'll say right now that there isn't really a correlation between where people were put and the symbols outside their doors. I needed to create an opportunity for the character bearing the purple symbol to be able to open Kate's door, and therefore put her in a room that could only be opened by that character. I then put the rest in rooms that didn't match the symbols on their keycards...except Seth. If you looked closely at the map that Connor discovered before, Seth's keycard matches the symbol outside his door.
Is that intentional? Maybe. Maybe not. (Bear in mind that we actually never saw what Seth's room looked like, due to it being in darkness...)
207-212
The pendant has a purpose, but isn't in any way related to leashes or mind control! In fact, Seth was just being metaphorical about the leashes thing. What he was basically saying is that scientists have a tendency to depend completely upon other people in order to be able to do their work, and the same goes for the Achronists. He, on the other hand, would be the last person to rely on someone completely like they do- he'd rather be the one that holds the power and is being relied on, the one "holding" the leash.
As for mind control, no, the Achronists didn't do mind control. They were just really, really persuasive. Plus, having a lot of money to give to people also helped with getting people along with their cause. Hope that helps!
246-253
(Somewhere between 236 and 246, a discussion started concerning the meaning behind symbols and a bunch of proposals were debunked.)
This update contains a WHOLE lot of hints to backstories and whatnot. Really do read the dialogue, it contains an enormous amount of clues.
Go back and look at the dialogues and stuff again! Often, throwaway lines or things that seem like forgettable statements do contain foreshadowing. There's even a throwaway line pertaining to the symbols that is a really big hint as to what it supposed to be. (It's not in this update, though.)
The meaning of the symbols are a bit...simpler than you might be thinking they are. But they still do play a big role in how I designed the characters, their personalities, and how they interact with one another, as well as their role in the story.
???
ALSO HINTS FOR THE NEXT [264-274] UPDATE: 1. No one is going to die. However, Cancel's gift will not be something anyone wants to have if they want to survive... 2. An example will be made of Kate for sure. 3. There is more than one of everything. (Don't take this TOO literally, but keep it in mind.) 4. Happy birthday, Ms. Greenwood.
If you are concerned about where this adventure will be heading/want a better understanding of what and will not be present in this adventure/want to read some of the author’s rambling (without spoilers) about the basis and goal for the story in and of itself: [the resulting explanation is LONG]
312-322
(concerning Daniel's introduction)
But I never confirmed him or anyone as the one who wrote on the walls so I'm not sure where you got that from????? Besides, none of the cast has any access to any paint-like substances at the current moment, and I CAN confirm that those drawings are rather old (I would say older than Connor, and he's the second-oldest of the cast at age 40.) You won't find out until much later about where those came from. Also, I can definitely confirm the last guy is not a schizophrenic either! He's high-strung, prone to panic, and may be a little more mentally vulnerable than some of our cast, but he's not hallucinating or anything of the like. I promise that if I will show a character involved with or dealing with such a controversial topic as mental illness, I will do my research first before undertaking such a thing. I understand and realize that such things are very serious, and that not representing it with truth and honesty would be offensive and rude to those who are dealing with or have been exposed to such things. Having a few traits of what would seem like behavior of someone crazy does not necessarily crazy make. (...)
He Who Has Yet To Be Named is NOT schizophrenic + I have NOT confirmed who has gone and painted those things on the wall. I CAN confirm that those black scrawls are over 40 years old.
323-330
In order to add some fuel to the speculation, have a few hints/vague tidbits about characters and such that might help (or further confuse) your theories and such for this adventure while it's on break! 1. ACHRONICITY. MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE. 2. There is a reason why Seth is tall. 3. She had something taken away, but then got something in return. 4. Dark, moist places are more prevalent than you think. 5. Goodnight, sweet prince. Flights of angels would sing you to your sleep, but they don't particularly want to at the moment. Actually, they'll never sing for you. Not in a million years would they sing for you, you little nothing. 6. You'll never expect to see what you'll see out the window in this place. 7. He's like a glass house, and it'll only take one stone to knock him down. 8. It could happen in two ways. From the inside out, and from the outside in. One is quicker than the other, but either one will happen whether you like it or not.
Shikishima: 2 P 4:2? Like, 2 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment? Yes, this is correct! Hehehe, glad somebody figured it out.
Magnum: Psalms 2 2:4 "He that sitteth in heaven laugheth, the Lord hath them in derision" Though, oddly enough, this one fits really well, too. Hmmm.
Tantalizing phrases, as referenced by Godbot: The one who let a weed grow where it shouldn’t have The one who devoted their life to protecting a monster The one who paints their glass house to look like stone The one who was blessed with a curse The one who wanted to watch it all burn with a smile The one who took what was never theirs in the first place. The one who didn’t feel regret. The one who is one of two. The one who came after the sky fell.
331-337
as a commentary to this picture: A couple of notes about this guy: It is NOT Cancel. Cancel and this man are two different characters in terms of...well, a lot of things. They are not the same person. Things might have been added/left out for artistic/symmetry reasons. (As in, he looks like this, but not EXACTLY like this.)
And in the end, he was all alone. What a poor, unlucky boy.
K25fF: You've got to in some way make him hate you to create a paradox. Does this mean that if Kate accidentally killed Daniel in a flashback, he would stop existing in the current time? THIS IS PRECISELY WHY THIS ADVENTURE INCLUDES NO TIME TRAVEL oh gosh my brain hurts because paradoxes
Interestingly enough, I'll say now that if you somehow were able to pick and kill a very particular person out of our cast in the past, then the entire Human Game, as well as Cancel's and the facility's existence, would never have happened. Good luck guessing which one it is.
pikajens: Is Camilla's voice supposed to represent smoke?? It's interesting that Abigail doesn't seem interested in it at all. Would expect the most boring voice for her would be the typical valley girl. I designed the voices on patterns or shapes which I thought fit the characters best (Kate's is comprised of little "explosions" suiting her impulsiveness, while Seth's is sharp and full of triangles, for example), so Camilla's is more or less a collection of straight lines, though you can very well see it as smoke! Abigail finds it a bit boring because Camilla's voice is really monotone and doesn't give much away in terms of feeling. Remember those teachers in school who would drone on and on and on about a particular subject? It's kind of like that - Abigail likes voices that she can at least use to figure out who the person is she's listening to, or voices that in general sound nice to hear. Camilla's voice does none of that.
Godbot: AWESOME KEYCARD LIST This is a really good summary of events so far in the whole keycard chain! Let me help along with it a bit with some information to help you all along.
365-372
In scenes like this, there is probably a whole lot more reaction among the cast going on than you think. Just try to imagine that instead of dead silence for characters who are not speaking, you got Seth doing a popcorn.gif 50% of the time, Camilla going "Hmm." or "Oh" at random points, and Kate cursing up a storm underneath her breath...stuff like that.. I WISH I COULD SHOW/WRITE IT ALL but alas, being an author sometimes means you have to get rid of some reactions to bring others to the front. ;;
Beastnix: just to let you know two punishments at once may be fatal It won't be. Making people suffer is definitely on Cancel's list of things to do, but killing a person directly is something that the guy specifically said was more of a blessing than anything else.
So, just a clarification and some hints on what this punishment is going to do for either Daniel or Kate. It will be very emotionally traumatizing for Daniel, because actually, it's going to be more of a trigger. You know how people are triggered by the sight of blood or loud sounds or something similar to a traumatic experience they have gone through before? That's what will happen to Daniel. It'll be something very personal for him, and like I said, he will be "out of it" for a while if he chooses to take the punishment. Kate, on the other hand, has no traumatic memories associated with this punishment (as it was never supposed to be her punishment to begin with), but in conjunction with the "gift" she already has, it'll probably be more physically painful for her. I can't go into details, but it is highly possible that one will activate the other. It is also highly possible that Cancel will modify it slightly for Kate and make it worse for her if she decides to take it.
373-379
BY THE WAY, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO KNOW HOW THE COLLAR THING WORKS, HAVE A LOOK AT THIS DIAGRAM OF SORTS
This is...Cancel's computer. Remember the one he was talking to earlier? This is the very same one. It will be retrieving and posting documents/notes/videos/soundclips/etc. that relate to the cast over the course of the adventure, some of which will give hints to the plotline and some which will just be there to serve as character tidbits that won't be shown in the adventure. Now, an interesting part of this is that you can actually try to inquire things of the computer to retrieve. It won't answer anything like "WHO IS CANCEL REALLY" but if you ask something like "I want to see more about Kate Greenwood's school life", it can do one of three things: 1) it can deem the inquiry irrelevant and won't post anything, 2) it will store the inquiry for later use and post something later as an answer to it, or 3) it can answer the inquiry right away. Do think carefully about inquiries...some might turn up some interesting things if worded the right way!
Also, bear in mind that this "computer" will be a part of the universe of The Human Game, and therefore could be considered a character of its own - if you've ever watched Person of Interest, this computer is rather like The Machine, and will be a "character" that will react and change depending on what happens in the plot. (Like, if I have Cancel make an in-canon request of it, it will be shown on the actual blog, and I'll note that there are updates to it in the thread so you can take a look.) So, do keep an eye on it - things might happen which won't be expected...
nuclearInsanity: Who's doing the inquiries? And does the masked fucker know about it? You'll just have to figure it out as time goes on. And no, Cancel doesn't know about it.
JackRises: 1st of July was when it began for Kate Greenwood and the site is saying 11st of July is when it began for Daniel Nox? i'm assuming you uh added an extra 1 there I never stated anywhere that the 1st of July is when the events of The Human Game started for Kate Greenwood, only that it was the day she remembered it as before she woke up in the facility. So yes, the extra 1 is not a typo.
THINGS THAT HAVE CHANGED IN CHARACTER DESIGN
Also, want to know a fun fact about the symbols? Here one of the patterns to them - you could have guessed the genders of the remaining members of the cast during the adventure if you have paid attention to the order
THINGS THAT HAVE CHANGED IN THE STORY
THINGS THAT ARE HINTS/THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KEEP IN MIND In which I dispel some popular mysteries and say some things I think need to be said. 1. Daniel does NOT have multiple personalities! I know a lot of things point to something like that, but trust me, I can confirm he doesn't. 2. The facility is located on Earth. 3. I know a lot of you have been asking the computer/Achronicity about certain things like how Abigail lost her eyesight, what Seth's eyes look like (and his medical records), and other really obvious mysteries like that - unfortunately I can't answer such things at this time, no matter how much I want to. I might answer some after certain events in the adventure happen, to give you further details about them, but there are some mysteries I have to keep mum on, I'm sorry. I'll try to answer as many as I possibly can, though! 4. Cancel was there for the first iteration of The Human Game. 5. What monsters dwell in the hearts of men? 6. A and A. 7. Order vs chaos, science vs the supernatural, and "good" vs. "evil" are some of the main conflicts of this adventure. 8. Everyone is lying about something. Some may know much more than they're letting on.
AND FINALLY, THE TWO POSSIBLY-NEW CHARACTERS THAT MIGHT SHOW UP AT SOME POINT (OR MIGHT HAVE ALREADY SHOWN UP):
[Also we got the details on Daniel’s shirt]
428-437
Chizita: [list of all the ways/reasons/etc lies can be flung around, potential sources included.] All of those things you listed are definite possibilities, even including lying to all of you, the readers. Lies come in many shapes and sizes...
Viridis: The author has, however, confirmed there will be no time travel involved in the adventure... And yes, yes I have.
456-464
Masquerade! Paper faces on parade . . . Masquerade! Hide your face, so the world will never find you!
(in response to a comment) What Seth wasn't trying to do in this situation was control the others. No, that was one of the last things he wanted to do. If one recalls, when given the control to be the leader of the situation, he refused and pretty much said it was a ridiculous idea. Seth never wanted to gain power through using others. He wanted to isolate himself from the very start. Why? He wanted to gain power through fear and the misunderstanding that he was someone more terrible than he actually is.
475-484
Masks cannot feel pain. Once again. Masks cannot feel pain.
Redsoff: Uh, is the Mask seeing with its own eyes, or with Seth's eyes? Because maybe we could stab through the eyelids or something. The only other thing I'm curious is how long it takes before a takeover is permanent, since it seemed only minutes had passed since Seth had his "possession".
It's seeing with Seth's eyes, which you might have caught with the fact that he didn't really recognize Camilla off the bat when she approached ("is that the green cow"). It's also using his voice. It's using everything he has, really...
And how long "takeovers" actually take will be covered later. However, I can definitely say that the speed isn't always the same, it does vary from person to person, and depends on some unmentioned factors as well.
...have the sneak peek that I promised I would post. It depicts a very important event in The Human Game's history, so feel free to speculate on what it means...
???
at some point after p492 the main thread got introduced to myopic pedant and abdicated harbringer
a few vague and intriguing snippets which you might find of interest: A name is sort of like a mask, too, isn't it? I have never been here, but...I've seen this place before. I know I have. Destructive interference. We saw angels through those doors. The Heir That Never Was.
527-533
Viridis: Word of God from TRL's Tumblr is that Joe used to write under a pseudonym. And apparently his name is not short for Joseph and he has no middle names, so he's literally "Joe Verger", period. MMMMMMH. His pseudonym was Solomon Strix! I cannot confirm anything else, though…
565-573
All I can say about Seth is that I have PLANS for him. BIG PLANS.
Categories do have a relation to one another. They are all based on a certain “theme”. You will see what that “theme” is in due time.
Moreover, early on there were a bunch of ideas thrown around about the symbols’ meaning, and all of them debunked.
Other than that, i’ve had a bunch of links conviniently labeled with quotes, that i recall coming from the author as well:
when angels go bad, they are worse than anyone else.
(On the topic of Abigail) You'll see later how this will be used for something she is very knowledgeable with that no one else in this adventure has....
Cancel/The Computer IS CANON. In a way. It's possibly one-sided.
You cannot claim what was never yours.
Masks can start to display expressions. Not as much as say, a regular face
Everyone has their part to play.
@thehappinessmachine can i have this signed & stamped?
#the human game#resource#i've found a second copy of the phrases way later but the official tumblr differs
