another petty thing that bothers me about acotar on a technical level is that all of the characters sound the same- none of them have fun or unique speech patterns, nothing special to distinguish them from each other. like I really wish I could describe it better but it all just feel….. early 2000’s fanfic writers idea of “sophisticated” speech. idk if that makes much sense but it’s writing 101 that you can’t have your characters all sounding the same because it’s just boring, it makes your characters feel lifeless like the cardboard cutouts you’re trying to elevate them from

#I’m sure someone’s complained about this before but I was forced to read some of feyre’s internal monologue #all of the ic sound the same on page and that’s one of many reasons I just roll my eyes every time I have to read their dialog #it would be cool if it were intentional like they had all picked up each others speech patterns over the years they’ve been friends but no #it’s just sjm being lazy once again :/#pls take this as a gentle reminder to go over your dialog and make sure that readers can tell who’s speaking just at a glance #it’s a technical skill I don’t see many people intentionally developing anymore and it’s kinda driving me crazy #sjm critical #acotar critical #writing advice with gold ig #gold talks.tag
