hi! i was wondering if you had game recs for someone that has only played sims and stardew on pc! im the person and i want to start playing more stuff but i dont want to start with something too difficult i hope that makes sense 🐣 thank you and i hope you enjoy your weekend
hi nonners!! sure thing! a huge chunk of my childhood gaming was harvest moon and sims so let's see! my gaming tastes are very unified yet all over the place so don't take this as gospel and something you will For Sure enjoy! feel free to follow up if any game/genre piques your interest!
if you never did so, i would recommend giving the sims handheld games (namely, sims bustin' out, urbz, and sims 2 on the gba/ds). they're still in the universe of the sims so you take care of your lil sim/urb but they're adventure games where you're given tasks and progress through the story. the writing is silly but good, and the characters are fun, though the games may feel grindy at times. feel free to hit me up if you'd like, i can hook you up with them!
in the farming sim/resource manager sim, i can recommend you the harvest moon games, now story of seasons. story of seasons: a wonderful life just came out on the switch, and i think other platforms, and it is a remake of the iconic a wonderful life. just keep in mind that it might feel like a step down from just how much content is in stardew valley! there's also the rune factory series, my time at portia (and the upcoming my time at sandrock), ooblets, graveyard keeper, calico, and animal crossing. oh!! and kynseed. kynseed is lovely and it looks gorgeous and it is a life sim where you play as successive generations, with lots of fae elements. it can get a bit grindy but i've greatly enjoyed my time with it.
(and i just started wylde flowers since i got it on sale this week, and i've been really enjoyed it so far, but can't provide a full recommendation since i've had so little time with it)
if you enjoy the decorating part of the sims, i can recommend you the tenants. it's a game where you play as a landlord, decorate houses, find renters, and most importantly do renovation jobs for clients.
if you're in the mood for something sandbox-y, other than animal crossing i think that no man's sky could scratch that itch (you can fully customize options such as resource availability, combat difficulty, etc) and, of course the legend of zelda breath of the wild (and i can only assume tears of the kingdom, but i haven't started that one yet)
if you're wanting to dip your toes into different genres, such as rpgs, i can recommend you the elder scrolls series (especially skyrim is more streamlined and thus, more beginner friendly) and dragon age. both series have difficulty settings you can change as you feel more or less comfortable. if you're interested in party-based, turn-based rpgs, you can't go wrong with the final fantasy series, golden sun, and octopath traveler (which is a recent favorite that i wholeheartedly love, with the caveat that if someone is looking for a large, overarching story it is not the game that will provide that)
edit to add story-based games. there are many but i won't cite what maybe most people would recommend bc i either haven't played it or dislike it. i really enjoyed oxenfree, not tonight, road 96, and most importantly of all, kentucky route zero. my sibling adores the dreamfall chapters series and i really enjoy watching them play it! and my wife (a much more casual player than me but whom i love watching play and has great taste) loved playing strange horticulture, the sexy brutale, eastshade, and coffee talk (episodes 1 and 2)
please keep in mind there's some overlap between categories! and i think that most games will be approachable to beginners. nobody was born knowing how to play games and i find that most games do a good job of bringing players up to speed.
sorry for the long reply!! gaming is just a bit of a big interest for me since it's my preferred medium and i'm a rambler haha. as i said, feel free to hmu again on or off anon!! and hope u too are having a great weekend

FEATURE: Happy 10th Anniversary To Every Anime Opening Ever Made (The Video)
I don't remember where I was at when I first watched "Supercut - Every Anime Opening Ever Made," but I do remember the inescapable truth it showed me after I watched it. Maybe I was on Gaia Online or some other forum when someone posted the link and asked "have you seen this?" I started the video and saw the seagulls flying in the sky. Then the white text on a black background showed up, saying that the following was in every single anime opening sequence...
The montage began! Cameras heading towards the sun! Going right into the character's eyes! The running! This dude was right: This stuff IS in every anime opening!
youtube
This Youtube supercut turns ten years old today, and if you were in the anime fandom around 2010 you had probably seen this video at some point. Now with 3 Million views, I think the reason it resonated with so many people is that for as much anime we watched, we probably noticed these trends but didn't make the full connection until it was fully presented in front of us. Regardless of genre or tone, there was this underlying connective tissue across dozens of shows that we may or may not have seen before. And shown in such a slick and edited fashion provided a connection across the shows we love. While videos like this are likely uploaded onto Youtube now more than I can imagine (maybe even right now as I write this!), this supercut was the original, back in a time when fandom was certainly a lot smaller and growing. Even though Youtube was becoming more of a hub for anime content (as we were slowly getting out of the Bleach-episode-split-into-three-parts era), fandom was more split in the sense that everyone had their own particular hub or forum they claimed home. There was no AniTwitter or Youtube Community tab to trudge around and find out what wider fandom was talking about. And yet, everyone seemed to have come around and appreciated this, a small stepping stone to what the community would end up becoming today. I was just going to celebrate this little piece of fandom fun with an article going down memory lane, but I decided to try to reach out to Derek Lieu, the original creator of the video, to see if he had anything to add for this retrospective. And luckily he got back to me really quickly! Can you first introduce yourself and what you do? My name is Derek Lieu, I currently live in Brooklyn NY and I make video game trailers! I’ve worked on trailers for Firewatch, Subnautica, Spelunky 2, Ooblets, Dead Cells, Half-Life: Alyx, and a lot more. How did you get the idea to make the "Every Anime Opening Ever Made" video? When I learned the American X-Men animated series from the 90s had alternate opening sequences made for when it aired in Japan I became fascinated by what made those openings so distinctly Japanese. I don’t remember my precise thought process, but I started downloading textless versions of anime openings from YouTube to start, and started sorting the footage. I think the one exception I made was for Neon Genesis Evangelion because I couldn’t not include it. About how long do you think it took to edit? Believe it or not the whole project took about an afternoon and maybe part of the evening. Downloading all the openings took longer than the actual editing. After downloading them I sorted the different tropes into categories like I normally do when editing stuff. Once the footage was sorted I barely moved anything around except to adjust for music sync and also where each chunk of tropes fit into the video. I used a specific Ayumi Hamasaki song which was used for the cel-shaded Molly Star Racer trailer (which much later became Oban Star Racers). The original remix song is much longer so I edited it down to about 3.5 minutes.
youtube
Is there anything in particular that stood out to you when you were making it? (Outside of so many shows using the same shots, obviously haha) I think the main thing that occurred to me is that so many of these tropes are just great ways to create cool moving images using as little animation as possible, but which still feel dynamic and fun to watch. One interesting bit of trivia is Trigun is one of the few series whose opening is footage from episodes cut together. This was by far the exception to the rule. I remember this video very fondly back in the earlier Youtube days, and it has 3 Million views as to date. Did you ever expect it to be that successful? Haha, not in the slightest. It seems the videos I give the least amount of thought always get the most number of views and the ones I spend a lot of time get the fewest. What do you think is your favorite and least favorite "trope" in the original video? I like the head turns. I didn’t even give attention to that one when I started the project, but it very quickly revealed itself as one of the most common ones. I don’t think I have a least favorite; they’re all fun to watch. One of the funniest is a person reaching their hand out to someone on the ground; I like this one because it’s so incredibly specific.
youtube
Do you still watch any anime? And if you do, do you see any of those same shots/frames/movements in particular still being used today? I don’t currently watch any anime, but I assume a lot of openings still use a lot of these tropes. Because they cover everything from standing still to running. I later made a video for unique anime openings because there are some which have really great stylized art and interesting images. I also made one for classic anime from the 80s and earlier which helped me see where a lot of the tropes originates. Do you have any other thoughts on the video looking back on it ten years later? Reading comments from people who watched it as a kid and now are rewatching it as adults makes me feel old, haha. Also, people keep telling me I “forgot” an anime. I once tallied all the anime people say I excluded and the list was far far longer than the number of anime in my video. Also, a lot of people mention anime which released after the video was made :P One bit of trivia, I didn’t include any Naruto because at the time I thought it would’ve been funny to exclude the most popular anime at the time. Sorry, Naruto fans. We'd like to thank Derek Lieu for not only making the video, but also for taking the time to speak to us. You can find him on Twitter and Youtube.

6 things to do if you've got an art block
Although I myself am going through a significant creative block right now, here are some ways I've found help me become unstuck and back on track! Right after I post this blog, I'm gonna go follow my advice so I'm not a complete hypocrite. But first! Here are the ways I usually deal with art blocks.
1. Doodle your favourite foods
Yeah, you heard me. Pick your favourite food, and it can be anything! Fruit, vegetables, dishes, desserts, drinks, candy, junk food, take-out, etc. For some reason, drawing food is a great exercise for me because I get to work with a whole lot of colour while keeping my subject very precise and small. If I'm in the middle of a large piece and get stuck or uninspired, doodling a Capri Sun, for example, or some ice cream really helps me reset. It also gives me a chance to doodle for fun, something that I don't always have time for.
2. Draw some fan art
Sometimes this can be more extensive, but I find it helps me if I take a subject I'm currently fascinated by and just draw art surrounding it. Original art can take a lot out of you, and being creative as a full-time art student is especially draining, so if you've got a podcast, a book, a movie, a game you're really into, draw some art of the characters or the setting! Here's a piece I did of all the Ooblets from the up-and-coming video game by the same name. I find it really helps me to take a couple of hours and relax by working on a creative project without having to be the one who comes up with the creative content.
3. Be creative in another medium
Got some poetry you've always wanted to write, or a craft project like scrapbooking you love? Do those instead of your art! Sounds counterproductive, and it's not the best for people on a deadline, but stepping away from making art and focusing on crafts, journaling, fiction or nonfiction writing, cooking, or maybe even art that isn't your normal medium can be beneficial for those suffering from an art block. I personally love doing calligraphy, or making small paper-cut plants.
4. Follow some prompts
Art prompts don't always have to be for Inktober- you can find idea generators and tons of prompt lists and use them any time of the year. This is a tool I often forget, since I (like many others) have tried & failed on upkeeping the everyday posting mess that is Inktober, and associate those lists only with the month of October. Use it any time, though! Draw that animal, that emotion, that person doing that activity. The prompt lists and idea generators out there are endless!
5. Create a Pinterest, or follow new artists on social media (Instagram and Twitter are full of them!)
This not only helps you look at the sheer number of people out there, it is also beneficial to see new styles! I have not found my own personal style yet, and while I may be a smidge stressed about that, I think experimenting in different art styles that have inspired me have been great! It also helps you work out of your comfort zone, and you learn something new while doing it! Go follow some artists and try to emulate their styles (*as a practice method to unblock yourself. Please do not appropriate art!) I have an inspiration blog specifically for this purpose!
6. Try a limited palette exercise
Back to the basics here, but try working on a subject with a limited palette. Here are a number of great palette generators and tools that I enjoy! Colormind: AI generated palettes
Coolors: great for image to colours, exporting palettes, etc.
ColorSpace: shows multiple palettes based on one colour! My personal favourite is COLOURlovers. It’s very community-based, and I enjoy that aspect of palette creation a lot!
Combine this exercise with other suggestions (draw your favourite candy in a limited palette, fanart in a limited palette, prompts in a limited palette, etc.) to really kill that art block. Draw that item / person in different styles, all in a limited palette! The possibilities are endless.
7. Bonus: Do something completely unrelated!
Haha I'm procrastinating on art right now by writing this listicle! Thanks for reading, go do something else before coming back to your art! Do your laundry, watch TV, read a book, do your homework if you're still in school, organize your closet, take a walk in the park, whatever you want! Check those things off your to-do list first, and maybe you'll be so happy to get back to making art that you'll be inspired again. I'm gonna go follow my own advice now.
