Homecoming
Masterlist here.
Word count: ~1100
Requested by anon.
Request: Can I request a marvel scenario where Steve has been away from home for a long time, away on a mission or something, and he surprises his s/o by coming home like, in the middle of the night?
A/N: Of course! I’m answering these requests a little out of order because this girl needs a little break from all of MCU!Loki and Stardew!Sebastian. I’ll get back to them shortly but I’ve been sleeping a little on Steve and I wanted to give him some love! This takes place right before Age of Ultron!
REQUESTS OPEN!
~~~
Steve had been gone for weeks.
You knew what the golden boy of the Avengers had been doing. Any time you heard of an explosion or “other worldly” hands at play, you knew he definitely had a role in it. You scoured the internet, looking for pictures, glimpses of him. He’d survive, you told yourself, but sometimes a 3 AM search couldn’t be helped.
Well, it was more like 4 AM.
It wasn’t like you couldn’t directly contact him; as a former SHIELD agent, you had access to cameras everywhere. Besides, contact would mean jeopardizing the mission, which you had no intentions of doing. But SHIELD had fallen thanks to Hydra, so you were left to your own devices, employed by Stark Industries by day. You worked with Pepper and Maria, making sure that the company was up and running as always. You and Maria made sure that any publicity about the Avengers didn’t reveal any identities, and the news reports didn’t completely attack them at every chance they got.
While Tony had offered to let the two of you stay at Stark Tower, you couldn’t help but think that the tower would put you in more danger than safety. Steve agreed with you, the two of you opting to stay in a brownstone a block or so away.
You weren’t entirely helpless. As a former agent, you knew how to fight, and was even equipped with special enhancements to your appearance. You’d known what you needed to survive during your time as an agent. When Steve had left, the two of you had been discussing your role within the Avengers. You still needed more training, but with enough time, you’d join them on the field.
For now, the team scouted out possible Hydra locations, and that was that. Even if those locations were global, causing them to be away for days, even weeks at a time.
Your shoes clicked on the linoleum floor as you made your way out of the building. Pepper had released you later than usual, insisting you walk home with an escort. Even though it was early summer and the sun set later, the streets of New York could be dangerous. You’d heard enough stories to know that much.
“Ready to go?” Your escort, Leo, held out his arm as you approached.
Leo was one of Tony’s personal security guards. He lived with his wife and daughters in the Bronx, and was often your escort during the nights that Steve was away. While Pepper didn’t doubt you knew how to defend yourself, she’d said that it was better to be safe than sorry.
“Mhm.” The two of you walked out of the building, starting the walk to your apartment building.
“How was your day?” He asked, making small talk as you joined the crowd of people outside. Your grip on his arm tightened slightly, not wanting to lose him in a place like this. He slowed down at this, trying to lead you through everyone without being jolted too much.
“Busy. No break ins?”
“A couple.” He shrugged, hurrying you across the street with the others. “All homeless. Luckily, Tony’s initiative helped them, instead of... you know.”
Tony’s new initiative surrounded the homeless that often crowded around the tower. He kept a constant supply of support packs, including things people needed to get back on their feet. He claimed it as a reputation booster, but you knew he was doing it for them. Despite his claims, Tony had a huge heart, especially for those down on their luck.
“That’s good.” You turned into your block, the crowd thinning as you walked.
“Any word about them?” Leo asked as you reached the doorstep. “Do you know when they’re coming back?”
“It’s unclear. They said they’re wrapping things up right now, but it could be any time, honestly.” You sighed, rifling in your bag for your keys. “I miss him, though.”
“He’ll come back soon.” Leo gave you a smile, stepping down from the porch. “Have a nice night, (Y/N).”
You got into your apartment safely, locking the door immediately after you. A quick glance at your phone brought on a small wave of sadness; the screen saver was of you and Steve, smiling brightly. The photo had been taken the day you became friends, and you’d held onto it, especially on the days where you couldn’t have the real thing.
Dinner was quiet and lonely as always. You tried to tell yourself that the situation was temporary, but temporary could mean a long time too.
After dinner you showered and changed into comfier clothes, slipping out of your unofficial work uniform and into one of Steve’s sweaters. You settled on the couch, flicking through movies before landing on Singing In The Rain. That movie always seemed to cheer you up, no matter how many times you’d watched it.
You’d lost track of time, but before you knew it, the credits were rolling. You sighed, noticing that it was close to eleven. Work would be difficult tomorrow if you didn’t sleep now, but you couldn’t, knowing his side was going to be empty.
Before you could reach for your charcoals and sketchbook, two quick knocks came from the door. Sketchbook forgotten, you got up from the sofa to answer whoever was knocking this late.
“I’m sorry, can I help- Steve?” You asked. Before you was Steve Rogers, pristine as usual, fitted in a grey henley and jeans. A duffle sat at his feet.
He smirked, looking at your pajamas. “Seems like someone missed me.”
“Oh, don’t get cocky on me now.” You sassed, taking hold of his collar and pulling him towards you. “That is not the first thing you say after you’ve been gone for over a month.” You met him in the middle, pressing your lips against his. Your hands moved to cross loosely behind his neck, jumping up and wrapping your legs around him. He chuckled, hugging you closer.
When the two of you finally came up for air, you leaned your forehead against his, panting a little.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about coming home on the ride back. The things I’d say to you, what I’d do... Whatever I expected, this is a hundred times better.” He grinned, letting you step back onto your feet. “I was hoping to surprise you in the morning, but I don’t think you would’ve liked that.”
“I prefer this much more.” You smiled.
“I see your wardrobe has changed into wearing any and all of my clothes.” He teased, and you rolled your eyes, still smiling wide.
“Shut up.”
Your worries disappeared, and any thought of work had flown out of your head.
He was home, and that was all that mattered.
