"By the way, Sengoku. Those bangs of yours that you grew out--and of course I mean they grew out in a good way--but doesn't it hurt?"

"It, i-it, i-i-it, it doesn't hurt at, a-a-at, a-at, at all?"

The one who responded to my exceedingly eloquent question was none other than my sister's friend, Sengoku, whose agitation was all but natural at this point--she had an expression that looked like a caricature of agitation, and her way of record scratching on the first sound of her sentence was a technique that followed the fundamentals, although scratching towards the end of the sentence was a novel sort of fade-out.

What was she, a DJ?

Though her posture was that of a kabuki actor--an unexpected blend of East and West.

"It's not like I grew them out to hide the third eye on my forehead or anything..."

"No, that's not what I meant by it 'hurting'...[?] I was just wondering if the tips of your hair would get into your eyes and poke at them."

For someone like me, who sometimes had the eyesight of a vampire, it wasn't really necessary for me to dramatically improve my eyesight, but it wouldn't really be funny if I lost my eyesight because of my hairstyle.

Although, a Sengoku in glasses wouldn't be bad.

"There's nothing to worry about there. It's true that the ends of my hair can taper off a bit, though."

"Are you talking about a shaggy haircut? You sound like an artisan."

"But I like to walk with my eyes closed so that they don't poke at me."

Rather than an artisan, this made her sound like an expert.

Hold on, you close your eyes?

Even now? Behind those bangs?

"Well, even if the ends of my hair didn't get into my eyes, just by being alive, your eyeballs will start to deteriorate over time. In that case, I think it's better to not misuse my eyesight, and instead keep my eyelids closed and fresh normally so that I only use them when I absolutely need to."

Misusing eyesight (shiryoku)... She said it like one would say misusing political power (kenryoku).

I've heard of athletes reading books, watching TV, or playing smartphone games only in moderation so as to take good care of their eyes, but to think that those bangs acted as a defensive wall.

In the first place, it was common knowledge that one grows hair in order to protect their head--so perhaps Sengoku's bangs were playing the role of goggles to protect her eyes from the sun's rays. Even the hat she wore low over her eyes was a sun visor, huh...

However, if you didn't use them at all, then by not using them, I felt like they would still deteriorate... Or rather, they'd degenerate.

Just look at those deep-sea fish that live in a world of darkness.

"I can't look at them. Because my eyes are closed."

"You got me there."

She sure showed me up[?], could have been the punch line I used, but why don't we continue the conversation for just a bit longer.

"In the first place, you're the type of person who does play games, aren't you?"

"I turn the screen off, and play with sound only."

That was a super-advanced way of playing.

If she could do that, then it seemed like she would be able to play without not only the controller, but without even the console itself--her eye level was at a high level.

"You know. The essential things in life are seen not with the eyes. You'd be able to see the world better if you looked with the eyes of your heart, Koyomi-onii-chan."

The eyes of your heart... I couldn't say it didn't sound even more shady than a third eye, but perhaps that depended on how you looked at it. Just with the eyes, that is.

Perhaps the eyes of my heart were too dull to take a straight look at the wise sayings of the little prince.

"I've seen too much of this filthy world, after all."

"That's so cool, Koyomi-onii-chan..."

Can you retort with something instead?

Can you not stare at me with those eyes sparkling like the stars, visible even through those long bangs?

That gaze was too radiant for me.

However, now that I realize it, saying that "you shouldn't judge people by their appearance" involves the premise that "we unconsciously like to judge people by their appearance", and I think that's something we should keep in mind. Especially since, at some point, the teachings started to become "it's not just etiquette that's important, but your personal appearance, too."

If you're going to be caught up by those misleads and feints, then it might be a valid strategy to just ignore your eyesight, and not look at all.

"That reminds me, the goddess of justice at courthouses is blindfolded while carrying scales, isn't she? In order to lay down fair judgments without being led astray by appearances..."

For those sorts of people who are at a poor station in life with the possibility of being brought to court for some crime or other, they may be thankful for this policy, but if possible, I would like for the courts to keep it in their hearts and not actually wear blindfolds during trials.

It's unthinkable (shingai) for someone to ascertain the truth with just the mind's eye (shingan).

Plus, aside from the defendant's appearance, can't you see your scales being tilted?

"They say that eyes speak louder than words, and that seeing is believing. Even with me having a reputation for having eyes on my back, I still think it's important to make frequent eye contact, Sengoku-uji. Or should I say, Kaga-Hyakumangoku-uji?[?]"

"You shouldn't make fun of people's names, Koyomi-onii-chan..."

Rather than a retort, I ended up just being admonished normally.

But if that was the case, then I would prefer you told Hachikuji that... But I guess they'd never actually come into contact before? Regardless, after being told that, especially after being told that by Sengoku, I had to apologize.

The act of teasing someone using their name can be as delicate as an eyeball.

In Sengoku's case, while her family name was just cool, her given name did seem like something she'd get teased for... I felt like, when I was in elementary school, I constantly asked about why it wasn't "Nadeshiko" instead.

Perhaps I'd poked at a trauma of hers--emotional scars are also invisible to the naked eye, after all.

For me, it would be that hellish spring break.

Though it was certainly a large cut, I wouldn't exactly call it precious to me.[?]

"Sorry, sorry. I'd like to apologize, including for the stuff I said in the past. If you could look the other way."

"Nadeko is sorry, too. It was a lie when I said that I grew out my bangs to preserve my vision."

"Well, of course."

"The truth is that I'm not good with making eye contact."

Rather than hiding my third eye, I was hiding my embarrassment.

That was what Sengoku said.

Because she'd been hiding something, I'd assumed it was something that was worth hiding, and mistaken it for some sort of valuable truth, but once I dug into it, it turned out to just be hiding her embarrassment--after having seen through it, it was quite the anticlimax.

The skilled hawk may not always hide its talons--it may not be talons (tsume), but dreams (yume).

And not dreams, but nightmares.

"When someone looks straight into your eyes and it feels like they can read your mind, isn't that scary? It's something that Tsukihi-chan often does."

It was true that that girl liked to look straight into your eyes without wavering.

You may as well call it, direct heat.

"It almost feels like my retinas are being scanned. Like all my personal information is about to be leaked. That's why I end up closing my eyes."

Thanks to my sister, such a cute girl ended up becoming the kind of character that uses her mind's eye... I couldn't help but feel responsible.

I couldn't turn a blind eye to this.

"All right. In that case, I'll be your eyes from now on. Just like Swimmy."

"Y-you don't have to go that far..."

I was rejected.

You could say that she was just looking at me from a distance, but my feelings were always looked down on with a bird's-eye view.

"It's hard making eye contact with my homeroom teacher, to the point that I want to wear sunglasses in class, but of course I can't actually do that, so I'm enduring it."

"So don't tell me, those bangs were actually the result of a compromise?"

There was nothing harder to get across than the endurance and compromise of someone that wasn't you... Just like the pain of being strangled by a snake.

"But, but, Koyomi-onii-chan, in the end, maybe the reason I isolate myself by not wanting to look at people's eyes is that I'm constantly looking into people's eyes. Because I was constantly aware of the gazes of others, I ended up thinking that maybe other people were aware of Nadeko's eyes, too."

That was, quite literally, an insight.

Or should I say, the focus of her attention was different.[?]

When you think that everyone thinks a certain way, it's usually because you're the one thinking it the most--when I thought that all my classmates considered me to be a dropout in school, it's because I was treating myself as a dropout the most.

It's the kind of self-contradiction where you're worried that someone set up a security camera, so you end up setting up your own security cameras. If you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you--that is, if you're feeling that way, it's because you were gazing into the abyss.

Thinking about it, there was no way my smaller younger sister was staring into people's eyes in order to understand their feelings. It's because she loved herself to the point that she believed, without a doubt, that everyone else loved her, too.

In other words, she was a self-siscon.

"That's true. Rara-chan just turns on the direct heat towards the other person for no reason at all."

"Scary... My sister is scary..."

However, it was an extremely apt metaphor--after all, she was the advisor of Tsuganoki 2nd Middle School's Fire Sisters.

"This idea has been shelved for quite some time now, but originally, in Nisemonogatari volume 2, my lovable sister was supposed to have fallen into despair at the idea of justice and turned into a pyromaniac, setting fire to the abandoned ruins of the cram school. Just a side note."

"I, i-i-i-i, i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i, isn't that too much for just a side note?"

Her record scratching went so far that she almost sounded like a chicken.[?]

Allow me to call her, Chicken Nadekko (although, if I showed no signs of remorse from earlier, she was sure to get mad at me).

"After hearing that idea, I realized it's better to keep unseen things unseen... Let sleeping dogs lie."

"Oops. Once again, it appears my quick wit has come and gone.[?] It's been exposed, my knowledge.[?]"

Incidentally, while this idea was not used, it was carried over into Nekomonogatari (White)--in a sense, it was Hanekawa's calamity, her calamity of fire.

Perhaps she didn't see the light of day, but she saw the light of the fire.[?]

In conclusion, whether it's truth or deception or light or darkness or fire or water, or perhaps like oil and water or like oil to a fire, it's enough to look at with a wink.

"Right. Nadeko can't become like Tsukihi, who always says 'Look right into my eyes and speak', but I do think that I'd like to cut my bangs short someday. It's really hard being cursed because I had no idea about my friends' feelings or even my own feelings--it was too terrible to even look at."

In Nadeko's case, it wasn't the light of the fire that I saw, but snake eyes.[?]

Saying that, Sengoku turned her face downward, as if lowering a shutter--taking a wait-and-see approach for the looks of her downcast eyes, it didn't seem like those eyes, or rather, that day would come. But when the day comes that Sengoku did show her eyes as if she were rolling dice, if you asked whether a demon would show up or a snake would show up[?], then, well, of course what would show up would be a snake.

And they all lived happily ever after.[?]

Kazakhstan: The Greatest Country in the World

I'll readily admit that my knowledge of American history (particularly when it comes to the oppression of BiPOC) is a little sketchy in places. So I conflated Juneteenth (the fact that certain places didn't emancipate slaves for 2.5 years after they should have) with the Tulsa massacre. However, I hope it counts for something (however small) that I at least knew it was something horrific to do with racist and oppressive BS, that noone in their right mind would be so callous or insensitive to wish anyone hapiness/celebration while remembering that. I wonder how many white Americans can honestly say the same. It seems that I am at least one step ahead of them. Most just take what they learned in K-12 and accept it as the whole truth. K-12, though? That strikes me as a class for advanced students. It seems to me that the average American isn't much more intelligent/educated than the average K-9. (It's one of the reasons why I'm proud to not be an American.)

Too Little, Too Late

Honestly, more white Americans know the history today than did a month ago, and more knew last summer than did the year before, which is definitely … something in the right direction?

Yeah, it's fucking sad, and infuriating, though. Your schools don't teach you this shit, or about Tulsa, or about Rosewood, or Rosa Parks, or about the legacy of lynching, or anything much beyond "slavery was really bad and then we fought a war to get rid of it and then it was mostly better and then Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech and made it all the way better". (Sometimes it's even worse. I know someone who had a friend who grew up in the South and though he admittedly didn't pay a ton of attention in history — with no serious repercussions because he's white — it was at least into his twenties before he realized that the Confederacy lost. He thought that they must have been fighting to end slavery instead of keep it! I mean, how problematic and appalling is that?!)

You don't teach kids about indigenous genocide, either. They don't learn about how their government has (sometimes quite literally) stabbed them (and the first nation's people) in the back over and over again. Growing up, I didn't learn about how Lincoln ordered the largest mass hanging in US history, executing 38 people who had fought because they were starving as a result of their lands being stolen (not just their original lands but part of what they had been forced onto, too) — and that a bunch of the names we saw everywhere like Ramsey and Sibley were dudes who were heavily involved in that "conflict", but I was taught the gist of the attrocities committed by men like Custer when the West was lost.

Your shit's fucked up from top to bottom and side to side.

Your whole education system is garbage, not just your History. Your countrymen (collectively) can't spell, have poor reading comprehension, struggle to identify their own country on a map (never mind anyone else's), are still stuck in the 1960 as far as race relations go, have no grasp of basic Physics or Biology, lobby against teaching evolution in schools (as opposed to Creationism), ad infinitum, ad tedium … Yet I, an individual from a Third World country, have a better education (Cambridge syllabus) than the average individual from what is allegedly The Greatest Country in The World™ Hmm … Something doesn't add up here (but then again, my country's Maths literacy is a known weakness). #JustSaying

Honestly, if my country of origin was one that once housed the thousands of minds that successfully worked out and executed the challenge of going from near-Earth orbit to manually landing a craft on the moon and getting it back to Earth without incident in less than a decade (using technology less powerful/accurate than the average pocket calculator, nog al); a feat so statistically improbable as to be practically impossible … to this sordid state of affairs, I would either retreat to the backwoods and whittle while seriously contemplating my ancestors' poor life choices or I would dilligently apply myself to getting a proper education through online courses. I certainly wouldn't run my mouth about how great my nation is when it's clearly appallingly and embarrassingly backward. Only an idiotic, ignorant, arrogant motherfucker does that. This is far beyond something rotten in the state of Denmark. So yeah, I'm very much anti-American and I'm definitely not ashamed of it.

Now, I realise, of course, that generalisations are generally wrong and not every American is an illiterate and poorly-educated backwoods hillbilly, but fuck me, the smart ones are needles in the haystack (and it's a very big haystack).

Perhaps if your government spent as much on mitigating its education, housing, medical aid (health insurance), unemployment and potable water shortage crises as it does on exploring the Universe and persecuting/murdering BIPOC (particularly non-Christian ones) around the world while claiming to be "liberating" them of anything other than natural resources (particularly gold, diamonds, oil and tungsten) and their lives while foisting cheap crap on them, I might not be such a harsh critic. But don't mind me; I'm just an anti-consumerism anarchist with no idea of how the world really works.

Having worked for some morally bankrupt organisations myself, I'm certainly in no position to criticise, but I do think it's at least a little hypocrytical for someone who worked for Baby Killers International to wish BIPOC a restive and peaceful Juneteenth.

The idea that it's made a holiday is all well and good, but the government still allows cops to murder minorities. It's a consolation prize and a hollow one at that. Not teaching why it's even a holiday in the first place is all sorts of problematic, but only in America. The government has been scared to death of its people (all of them) since the 60s (which is a good thing). Now, they're seeing a lot more whites side with BIPOC than did back then. The only thing keeping them safe is their brainwashed right-wing. This is beyond disturbing.

The Greatest Country in the World

"We're The Greatest Country in the World™", you cry? Maybe sixty years ago you could broadly claim it was heading there and maintain a straight face (if you ignore a lot of problematic shit like abusing Oppenheimer's genius in order to commit war crimes). It certainly isn't any more. Why; what the fuck happened to a nation that used to be an inspiration? Well, you didn't just rest on your laurels; you destroyed them. Meanwhile, the rest of the world struggled and persevered to become what you once were. Unfortunately, we bought into the nightmare of consumerism and greed you packaged and sold to us as The American Dream™.

Powerpuff Girls 2016 - “Watch It!”

Yeah, this show should watch it.

Our episode begins at the Townsville Art Museum. Townsville seems to have fifty department stores and about a hundred science conventions, but this art museum that was featured in Man Up 3: The One That's Even Worse Than The First One gets to be featured again. This Art Museum proudly displays art that's good according to that sign. Or maybe it's just a sign saying "Art: That's good!". I can't really tell.

Dame Elsbeth, presumably the owner of this museum, has called the Powerpuff Girls for an emergency. Buttercup immediately assumes a red bee is the problem, and tries to hit it with a rolled up newspaper until Elbeth protects it. See, it's not just a bee, and it's not just a ruby, it's a Rubee! Get it? Someone doesn't, and it's no surprise which one.

Bubbles: Uh, I'm confused. But that happens a lot, so it's okay!

I would chalk that up to Bubbles being written like Patrick Star again, but I tend to get confused by what happens in the reboot, too. The Powerpuff Girls were called because this priceless artifact, the most valuable item in the entire museum, is completely unprotected from potential thieves.

They did have a high-tech security system in place, but someone shoved a meatball sub into the control panel, causing it to malfunction. I have read so much Not Always Right to tell you that nothing is unrealistic when it comes to people ruining technology in unique ways. Oh, if only if there was some other way to protect valuable pieces of art. Like, I don't know, some sort of glass box surrounding it like that Anubis thinker right next to the security guard? Maybe it's just too powerful to be in one? I don't know.

The head of the museum decides that three six year old girls are perfect candidates for protecting this artifact. They are superheroes with really, really big eyes, but the former does cause a problem. What if something bad happens in Townsville, and the Powerpuff Girls have to stop it? Monster attacks seem to be pretty high in this season, though that's not that much of an accomplishment.

This episode is no exception, and it's even something that isn't a silly monkey with a silly hat or someone who sounds just like him. Cat-Thulhu has risen, destroying the city and eating 1d3 pieces of catnip every turn. If you wanted to hear the Mayor call something "eldritch", this is your episode.

Blossom comes up with a plan: one of them will keep a close eye on the Ru-Bee, the other two will fight Cat-Thulhu. Buttercup is excited to answer that call to Cat-Thulu to avoid having to learn anything, until Blossom tells her she's going to be the one to watch the Rubee. Buttercup tries something to get out of this, and it's confusing to say the least.

Buttercup: Come on! Let's decide by age or something.

Blossom: Fine! Bubbles and I will fight Cat-Thulu, Buttercup, you stand guard.

Buttercup: Wait, Bubbles isn't older than me!

Blossom: I'm counting mentally.

The joke requires enough brain cells to realize she's indirectly calling Buttercup less than intelligent, but not enough to remember that the Powerpuff Girls were born at the same time. I can see what kind of joke they were going for, but it just doesn't work in the context of this series. Even of the context of this episode, judging by that "I'm normally confused" line from earlier.

Once again, PPG 2016 does another three shorts episode, focusing on how each Powerpuff Girl would protect a priceless ruby. Buttercup starts out by looking around for any suspicious people, and her eye manages to spy a Steampunk Waluigi laughing maniacally. Buttercup reacts accordingly.

Buttercup: Sus-piiii-cious.

Bloo said it better, needless to say. She confronts this, and he says he's just a gem afficinado, and thieves are just. Buttercup decides to take this rather suspicious man's word for it, and grabs a baby who happened to be crawling around where the Rubee is. Before she can punch out a baby, another guy shows up to be in awe over the Rubee.

This leads to Buttercup giving a slideshow beatdown to a bunch of people who just happened to be wandering by the Rubee, using the baby as a weapon! The baby doesn't seem to care, which was probably the best case scenario with this entire "joke."

Meanwhile, we get a most shocking twist. You will never believe this, this is a scene I could not see coming.

Get this, Blossom and Bubbles are tied up by Cat-Thulu, absolutely helpless without the help of that rascally little green princess that normally takes on giant monsters like they're nothing! What an unpredictable turn of events.

While the two girly ones are struggling against the giant monster, the boyish one set up this airline security system. Don't think about it too hard; the show barely mentions how this would have solved the problem of the episode and just disappears after Buttercup's plot. It doesn't even attempt to explain how Buttercup managed to get said security system on a 6-year-old's allowance.

This new security system leads to another problem: namely, Buttercup being way too suspicious. She ends up arresting Barry for the crime of carrying a piece of gum with him, because he could have reshaped it into a Gumblebee that can be used for Indiana Jones-style swiping. Heh, Rubee, Gumblebee, their use of bee puns is as good as it can get. She then has the baby arrest him so they can make this joke:

Buttercup: You've been cuffed, son! Take him away, baby.

Get it, because it's a baby. That’s all I got; the baby doesn’t even really appear after Buttercup’s part with one little exception, which is not that much of a missed opportunity.

Buttercup gloats that nothing can get past her, and she almost catches a rather familiar looking crook until Blossom gets Monster Punch Girls Downed into the museum. This ended up being enough of a distraction for that familiar looking crook to nab the Rubee, and Blossom has to tell Buttercup someone is stealing it. I'll give you three guesses on who it is.

Yup, it's Discount Jojo. Again. They really waited until near the end of the Season to dump a lot of his episodes, didn't they? He doesn't even have a good reason to steal the Rubee, he's just doing it because he's evil. Buttercup just throws a vase at him. Leave it to Buttercup to irreparably damage the property of the museum while trying to protect other property. I guess that Rubee was just that valuable for nobody to notice.

Blossom, knowing that she couldn't defeat Cathulhu with Bubbles, decides to let Buttercup fight the monster, while she looks at the ruby. It's her turn. Don't think about the "mentally" joke here, because that only existed for that one scene.

Blossom's part is pretty simple. While she watches over the Rubee, a tour guide shows up to talk about its history. Blossom then gives that tour guide a "well, actually" and gives the true story of the Rubee. She then becomes the new tour guide, guiding these people to another part of the museum. Rubee be damned, she just can't help herself but express her knowledge.

...that's really about it for Blossom's part of the plot. It's kind of a sad theme with these three plots episodes; when all three sisters are involved, Blossom always gets the short end of the stick. She had the worst part in The Squashening, she had the worst part in Splitsville, she had the worst part in the Small World special, and she had the worst part in Checkin' Out. The only episode I can think of where she didn't get the worst part was in Memory Lane of Pain, and that's only because Bubbles' part was just telling her how useless she is as an actual superhero.

If there's any positive thing I could say, it's that there's nothing offensive here. In fact, there is this one scene where Dame Elsbeth comes back and asks Blossom if her sisters are looking over the Rubee that she totally forgot about. Blossom looks back, and realizes that the Rubee is missing again, and she has to distract Elsbeth...by grabbing her and throwing her out of the room. I don't know why I chuckled at that, but I did.

This would have been a good opportunity to use different villains. I'd think the Fashionistas would have loved that Rubee on their fashionable rings, and I bet it was probably shiny enough for Pack Rat, a villain that hasn't made a major appearance since Season 1. Unfortunately, well, maybe somewhat fortunately for the latter case, that wasn't in the budget.

Instead, Discount Jojo just continues to steal it again and again, just evilly laughing about how he pulled off this perfect heist. At least there's some variety in how he's stopped. In this part, Blossom eye lasers a Gem Foot to kick Jojo right in the rear, causing him and the Rubee to fly across the room. A good visual, but leave it to Blossom to irreparably damage the property of the museum while trying to protect other property. I guess that Rubee was just that valuable for nobody to notice. I'd argue that boot should probably be more valuable than that ruby. I mean, look how huge it is!

As for Buttercup, surprisingly, it turns out that Cat-thulu was too powerful for her, too. Well, that might not be entirely the case. The reboot does make sure to show that Buttercup probably could have taken this eldritch abomination on if Bubbles wasn't trying to pat its tummy! Yes, they're seemingly going with the "Bubbles is grossly incompetent" angle that was also used in Memory Lane of Pain and a few other episodes.

At least she's not incompetent to show up just in time to grab the Rubee from Jojo's hands. Blossom asks the Cathulhu-scratched Bubbles what happened to Buttercup, and she says that Buttercup said she can handle this monster all by herself!

Buttercup: (in Cathulhu's maw) AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!

Bubbles: I believe in her!

After the umpteen times Buttercup had to save her more feminine sisters, this is not entirely a Patrick Star Bubbles joke, even if it was most likely intended to be one. I'm sure they would use different terminology for it, but you get what I mean. Blossom tells her she will go help out Buttercup, and Bubbles should look at the Rubee, and...

Blossom to Bubbles' ears: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...

Bubbles also can't focus on anything, never mind a Rubee. I did not have high hopes for Bubbles' part in this story.

...and that might have been a good thing in the end, actually. Maybe my standards are getting pretty low, but I actually really liked Bubbles' part of the plot, where she just tries to entertain herself from this boring job of watching something that doesn't move or talk. Even George, the security guard that was trying to fix the security system by using other sandwiches, manages to be useful in this plot by being the person that tells her after all of her actions, she only spent ten minutes watching the Rubee. Bubbles goes mad from boredom.

Literally, as, much to the surprise of Bubbles, the Rubee comes alive. It's clearly a hallucination by Bubbles due to her boredom. I wish the scene could have implied the seemingly obvious without outright saying it, but I guess they didn't think of their audience that highly to assume they wouldn't figure that out without the bee saying "no, I'm just an hallucination, tee hee!" Show, don't tell.

Honestly, that's my only real complaint about this part, and it's a minor one. There's a musical number where Bubbles transitions to several different scenes with this personified Rubee, and it's pretty cute. I even like how Jojo comes in as a pretty good transition out of the musical number, and his method to play along with Bubbles' delusions in this part's "Jojo steals the Rubee" scene. Maybe it's in contrast to the other two parts, where he just yoinks it when the other sisters are away, but I thought it was clever.

Blossom and Buttercup end up beating up the monster, crushing all of Discount Jojo's bones. You'd think they'd be more careful after that Silico incident. Also, I can't help but see some sort of meaning to how Bubbles was involved in both of the times they weren't successful, and how she wasn't involved when the monster was defeated.

The episode ends with a callback to how Steampunk Waluigi said that a thief would be the one you would least suspect. At least, that's the most charitable explanation, and that alone makes it better than most of the reboot episode's endings.

Does the title fit?

The Powerpuff Girls do have to WATCH IT.

How does it stack up?

While not my favorite of the three shorts episodes, I expected a lot worse out of this one. I could see this as a decent Season 5 & 6 episode and a fourth-rate Season 1-4 episode, so that puts it up pretty high by reboot standards!

Next, the return of Donny and Man-Boy. May they have mercy on our souls.

The city is buzzing like nothing you have ever seen before. Music as far as the ear can hear, topless cars driving by without rush, every corner different than the one before and people as carefree as the wind - it's truly magnificent. New Orleans is at ease beating with his own heartbeat uncanny from the cities you stepped foot in.

“I knew you would make the right decision.” Her voice reaches you first before you can even see her descending among the crowd.

Unlike the first time you met, close to a week ago people don't seem to avoid her. They don't cross the streets, they don't stare, they just move past her, not fazed by anything. She seems to be much more at ease here.

She´s home.

And that cradles the green-eyed monster within yourself. Especially now that you´ve been on your own for the last months.

“That was fast, you do have eyes and ears everywhere.” You say, more or less impressed by how far information travels for someone like her.

“And now you do too, considering you´re willing to join us.” She says, your gaze drifting by her, which she seems to take as a sign of indecisiveness “Not to worry, you do not have to stay if you don't like it.”

“I'm here, aren't I?”

“Follow me then.”   

She leads you along St. Peters street as you could gather from the street sign.

A cinnabar- orange colored building stands taller than the others on the intersection, it´s multiple floors creating a shadow that's drowning out the daylight on the street. In one of the windows of said house, a figure stands, presumably a man judging by the top hat. The mystery man lingers for but a moment before he closes the curtains.

“I would stay away from that house. Nothing but trouble.” Mae says, returning to your side.

You didn't even notice you stopped walking.

“This is your first time in the crescent city, correct?” She asks looking over her shoulder, and you answer with a nod “ Then I´ll have to give you a tour sometime. You ain't gonna find nobody better to show you around than me. I´ve been here since the very first day, laying down the first stone in Spring 1718.”

1718...that would make her close to 200 years, if not much older.

She crosses the street in a hurry, greeting what looked like traders in front of a shambled bar, the dirt crawling up the cracked walls fading with the orange bricks. You look up to catch a glimpse of the sign above the door, but it's empty. Strange. There seems to be no name set for the bar yet.

When Mae opens the door, the smell of spilled spirits, cigars and old wood dances around you, seeping into every pore. She greets several people sitting on tables, some with revolvers on the table, some reloading them with wooden bullets, others so preoccupied with their gambling they don't even bother to look up.

Mae continues through an archway and halts in front of yet another door, knocking against it in an alternating pattern. The small opening on the top is pulled back, a pair of eyes looking through them, their color not recognizable by the dim lighting.

“Lots of secrecy for someone that recruits people on the streets.” You say, just as the door snaps open, a woman on the other end holding the door open for you to step through.

“Believe it or not, we´re not the most favored bunch in this community. Or anywhere else really.” She says, walking into the open courtyard-like room, the ceiling beams high up her head “Welcome to our HQ.”

Several heads turn at your and Mae´s arrival, curious eyes scanning you up and down, a collective habit as it seems. The walls are made of patched up bricks that stretches out to the entire length of the room. The edged staircase on the left is accompanied by a dark red wallpaper, the sound of a lone guitar player in the back bouncing off of them.

It all has a shambled feel, which actually is much homier than you'd anticipated.

“I can give you the grand tour later if you want. But this precious one is our training area, gotta know how to defend yourself if you´re gonna have a run in with the big dogs.”

The fighting area is empty, but the scratched and slightly cracked floor is evident enough that fights must occur regularly.

“So that's what you're doing here? A fight club?” You ask her, trailing your fingers along the improvised stringed fighting area boundaries.

“I wish. But no. People come to us when the mortal or supernatural law fails and they need someone to take out the trash.”

Take out the trash, huh? How very inviting.

“You´re hired guns then?” You ask, the revolvers and the all over somewhat brute environment making much more sense. Not that you´d have any prejudices, of course not, but this is different than what you've expected.

The question is, is it different good or different bad?

“You could say that. Though, our currency, however, is not money, it´s blood, magical components and most importantly information. Gotta keep all species happy.”

“All species? There are witches, vampires AND werewolves living under one roof?”.

You never heard of such a thing. There has always been a mutual segregation among the species, how come it seems to work here only?

“Granted we lack a few in the werewolf department, but yes, we´re abiding the ancient rules. We´re one big dysfunctional deadly family. You´ll fit right in.” Mae gives you a wink and continues on to another bar counter.

“Howdy boss. What can I do you for?” A dirty blond-haired man asks her, drooling with a southern drawl. The dresshirt he´s wearing is crinkled and greased and the suspenders are slightly off. All in all, he doesn´t seem to care much about it, unlike the somewhat uptight men you´d see dressed outside of these walls.

If your mother would be here now, she´d go ballistic. There was nothing worse than a wrinkled dress-shirt. She would always make sure there were no wrinkles anywhere to be found after you pressed the clothes in the slick stones.

“Howdy? Seriously? Where are we, the wild west?” You mutter, the words slipping out of your mouth before you have a chance to catch them.

“Aren't you precious?” The man laughs loudly, a few tousled strands of hair falling over the side of his face which he ruffles back with his palm  “Name´s Shank.” He says and extends his other hand.

“Y/N Salvatore.” You reply and shake his hand.

“Ah, the girl I heard so much about.” He says, his pale grey eyes lingering “I ain´t gonna lie, you´re much scarier in person.”

“Me scary? I think you got the wrong person.”

He cocks the side of his eyebrow and knowing smiles as if he's see something lingering within that you couldn't.

“Care for a drink?” Shank asks, not dwelling on his silent discovery.

“It's already noon, so why not?” You shrug your shoulders  “Bourbon, neat. Please.”

“A Bourbon girl, I like you already. Coming right up.”

Shank generously fills the glass and sets it on the table all the while preparing another one, presumably for Mae. He slides her glass over the slick surface, landing directly in her hand. The liquid filling the crystal glass is as crimson red as her lipstick.

“Now to your potential mission. You remember what I told you?” Mae asks and you nod “You're gonna observe him.” She says and slides a drawn portrait over the wooden table. “Kol Mikaelson, part of the original family, the first vampires ever created. He's the black sheep of the family and most likely cooking up a revenge plan. I need you to observe him, watch where he goes what he does and who he talks to. He's dangerously reckless, so you have to proceed with caution.”

“Black sheep of the family and dangerous? Right up my ally.”

“Thought as much. With your family history and all.”

There it is again. Her strange knowledge of you and your life. How long has she been following you?

“You seem to know an awful lot about me when I know nothing about you.” You say, swirling the bourbon in your glass, avoiding to look at her.

“Then shoot. What do you want to know?” She asks, ready to receive any question.

You contemplate on several questions that are worth asking, but one in particular interests you the most, especially because you just lost yours; Family.

“These people here are your family, right? Your chosen one at least. What happened to your real one?”

“Hitting the hard questions I see.” Mae sighs “Well, my family and I had a mutual understanding. They wanted me gone and I wanted them dead. So I killed them.”

She killed her own family. Who knows what else she's capable of? Perhaps it was a mistake coming here. You look around, searching for any type of exit you could slip away easily when nobody's watching. But there is none. The only exit is the one you came in, walking by several filled tables.

“You killed your own family? Just like that?” You ask her, having no choice but to continue listening to her story.

“Not entirely voluntarily. I was falsely charged with an act of crime that only someone of my kind could commit. And me being the only freak in the village, they blamed me and destined me to be hanged.”

“I assume your village has never seen a vampire before?”You say, the word village indicating that she must be much older thanas you first thought.

“No. I wasn't a vampire then.” She shakes her head, her I was what people call a shiphoner - a witch without an own source of power. My people, or coven as you could say, only housed a few of us, but by then I was the only one left.”

“But yet you´re still here, so I assume they didn't go through with it?”

“Oh, no they did. Their hatred of the unknown was proof enough. I was dangling in the wind, with death gripping my feet.” She stops to take a sip of her crimson liquid “ But unlucky for them the ropes were dripping with power so I used them to free myself. And then I burned everyone. Guilty, innocent, old and young. I turned every witness to ashes.”

The memory of that event seems to rattle her. She tightens her grasp around the glass while her face remains unchanged. Lucky for you, you´ve always been paying attention to the glimpsed other people would ignore. A cruel present your father's violent outbreaks have gifted you.

“That's terrible.” You say, just imagining the cries of the dying and rush of guilt after the rage had calmed send a shiver down your spine.

“I ain't no saint, Y/N. Nobody here is.” She replies.

“No, I mean that they just blamed you for it, because you weren't like them.”

She seems to be surprised at your words as if she expected you to judge her for actions that were fueled by betrayal.  But you´re not innocent either, so why would you judge her based on one of presumably many mistakes? You didn´t burn an entire coven, sure, but you still have blood on your hands. Much more than you´d ever thought possible when you first turned.

“The world is a terrible place, Y/N. But nothing much has changed in that regard, has it? Even the mortals segregate when they should reunite.”

She´s got a point. There is a war seething among humans right now. Another nasty comment, another dirty look might be the final straw  Reuniting instead of segregation is the only solution. On the supernatural and human side.

“That is why I set the foundation for the empire you see today. We are united here. Vampires, Werewolves, witches, sometimes even mortals. You don't have to be ashamed of who or what you are.” She says and hits the exact point you´d always struggled with; being ashamed of what you are. A blood-sucking monster.  

There is power and most of all truth in her words, a power that for once seems graspable and truth that should be as clear as day, yet for most, it's overshadowed by a casing of prejudice and taught hatred. You haven't met anyone as free from said casing in a long time. Perhaps ever.

A few hours have passed since you arrived at the Headquarters, and you spend your time roaming the halls before you found yourself in the extraordinarily organised library. There are files upon files of vampires reaching back to the earliest supernatural creatures - the Mikaelson family. All files of the Mikaelson siblings either had a drawn portrait or photograph. All but the infamous Klaus Mikaelson.

Perhaps that's a good thing. You heard terrible tales and you would rather stay away from him as far as possible.

You flip through Kol´s file, interested to learn as much about him as possible before agreeing to your mission. Besides his handsome features, he seems to have travelled a similar path away from his siblings.

As you flip to another page, a small piece of paper appears, floating from the high ceiling. It lands directly on the page. It reads:

Meet me in my office

-Mae

You close the files, carrying them with you to her office.

When you open the partly glass door, the smell of burned paper escapes the room.

“Everything okay?” You ask.

“Oh, Y/N..I...got rid of a few belongings. Burning bridges, closing doors - however you would like to call it.” She smiles, her usual striking hazel eyes dull and overshadowed with sadness.

A folded picture on the floor catches your attention, the edges torn and the image on the topside faded.

“I think you missed something.” You pick the picture from the floor, without looking at it handing it to her.

“Oh. That's not…thank you. ”She says, her gaze flickering to the photograph in her hand. She traces her fingers along the outlines of herself next to Klaus at the opening of the Opera House in 1859. She looks at the camera while Klaus looks at her, the image frozen in time.

“Must be a special picture.” You say, pulling out of the trip down memory lane.

“It was. Now it's simply a fading photograph, a reminder that the person you´d take a bullett for can easily be the person pulling the trigger.” 

She clears her throat, shaking off whatever bothered her about the picture and hands you a stack of cards with a crow printed on the front, contrasting with the light paper.

“This is our calling card. Leave this at any of your potential missions and everyone knows it was us that did the deed.” She explains

“A crow, huh?”

“That's what the locals call us. Crows or bringers of death. Appropriate don't you think?”

You turn the card around, reading the Latin phrase that´s written on the back “What does this mean?”

“Not fluent in Latin I see? It means “never be afraid of darkness” - an old sentiment I thought fitting.”

Never be afraid of darkness. If only someone had told you that all the times you were locked in the basement for protecting your brother, maybe it would´ve brought you some comfort. But still as silly as these simple words may sound, there is indeed comfort in them.

“You know, I don't get it. Out of what reason do you want me to follow this Kol Mikaelson? There as to be a reason?”

“I was close to his family. And despite past grievances, I don't want to see them hurt. Kol, fairly so, has a thirst for revenge and I need to know what he's cooking up so I can interfere.” Mae says, rounding her table to lean on the front “I know this all might be a lot, but give us a chance if you dare. You won't regret it.”

“I'll think about it.” You reply, not knowing if you should stay, despite how eerily comfortable you already feel. Perhaps it will clear up in time.

“That's all I ask.” She says “ Now how about I show you around? There's a lot to see in our Crescent City.”

The feeling of a excitement washes over you as you step into the blinding heat of the day, a feeling you thought you buried long ago with your humanity. But perhaps after all the grievances in the past, especially with your brothers recently, it´s time for a fresh start. Here in New Orleans.

Maybe it was the right call coming here after all. Maybe, just maybe being surrounded by darkness doesn't seem so bad for once....

A/N: Did anyone catch what building I hinted at in the beginning? That's right, the Mikaelson Compound. But who was that at the window...hmm.. ;)

I realize that this does not really contribute to the current happenings of the story, but I felt like there should be a little more background. And I´m a sucker for flashbacks anyway.

Constructive criticism: DCEU in general

I am a big DC fan. When I was little and couldn`t even read, Superman was the first comicbook superhero I was introduced to. The second one was the Hulk.I am however not one of those DC fans who completely ignore the flaws of the DCEU movies. I have studied dramaturgy and I have seen several educational videos on youtube on how to make movies competently.The DCEU movies have two problems. One is the vision of Zack Snyder who who has to make every heroic character into a damaged, dark and depressed antihero who is reluctant to help others. Snyder has however left the DCEU, partly because of a family tragedy but also because he was fired. (I want you to know that in this case I separate the art from the artist. From what I`ve heard Snyder is a nice guy, he has my sympathies.) So with Snyder gone the DCEU technically only has one problem left, and in this case the problem lies with Warner Bros: The movies are too rushed. WB are too concerned with catching up to Marvel than to take their time and tell a good story. If they had taken their time and planned things out beforehand they could have made it much better. It also helps that Marvel, who understand their comics more, have their own studio. If I could run so fast that I could screw the laws of physics, travel backwards in time and change these movies, this is what I would have done.

2013: Man of Steel Make a few changes, like Pa Kent not telling little Clark that maybe he should`ve let those kids in in the bus die. (Yes, I know, he didn`t say it directly, but it was in the subtext.) I`ve gone into more detail about it in my constructive criticism of Man of Steel.

2014: Wonder Woman Yes, it has a few flaws, but I`m not gonna change a thing... with one exception. That scene where Diana gets a package from Bruce with the photo of her and Steve Trevor. Remove it from this film and put it as a mid-credit scene in Batman v Superman. (I mean, in this hypothetical Flashpoint universe WW comes out before BvS, so it works) 2015: Green Lantern Parallax is not the villain, but Sinestro. See my constructive criticism of it. 2015: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Remove and change all the stupid stuff. (Once again, I`ve gone into more details about this movie`s shortcomings in a previous constructive criticism.) Here`s one thing I would like to add though: Amanda Waller has a cameo in this movie. (She could be one of the people in the interview montage that gives their two cents about Superman and how he affects our world.) And after Batman v Superman I would have made two solo movies, one for the Flash and one for Aquaman (not necessarily in that order) to properly flesh out and develop their characters before Justice League. That way, there`ll be enough room for Cyborg and Steppenwolf to get sufficient character developement.

2016: The Flash In this version Barry is not Sheldon Cooper-ish. Plot Barry`s mom was killed when he was a kid and his dad was framed for the murder. Barry grows up and studies to become a crime scene investigator. He is friends with journalist Iris West. (They are not a romantic couple... yet.) Meanwhile: Somewhere else, a guy named Mark Mardon is being tested as a human guinea pig by some unknown man who`s face we don`t get to see. The tests on Mardon finally give results: He developes superpowers, more specifically: weather manipulation powers. To test his powers he creates a thundercloud. Meanwhile: Barry Allen is ready to go home after a hard work day. He`s about to shut the window when he gets hit by lightning and thrown into a case full of rare chemicals that the police have confiscated from a gang of criminals. He wakes up the next day at the hospital. Later he discovers that he has become superfast, but he also realizes that it is not ordinary superspeed. If it was, his clothes would burn up from the air friction, so it`s something more than just superspeed. He does an act of heroism, while hiding his face by wearing a red hoodie jacket, and realizes that he could become a superhero. (He`s also inspired by Superman who gets mentioned on the news.) Speaking of the news: Amanda Waller gets interviewed on TV, she mentions that a special jail has been built that`s strong enough to hold superpowered individuals. She thinks that it`s a necessity after the destruction of Metropolis. He studies hard with the forensic science stuff while making his Superherocostume from scratch. Mark Mardon goes around and steals hi-tech devices and chemicals, things that are sciency in general. Turns out the confiscated, rare chemicals that, combined with lightning, turned Barry into a Superspeedster are some of the chemicals that are needed to make the drug that triggered Mardon`s latent superpowers. Mardon steals the science stuff because of a quid pro quo thing: The unknown scientist gave him powers so that he could lash back at society (He`s a jerk with a crappy childhood) and in return, he uses his powers to help the scientist do more illegal science stuff. Barry fights Mardon and wins. Mardon gets taken to the special jail by Amanda Waller`s goverment guys. Barry visits his dad in jail to tell him that he`s passed the test and is now a licensed forensic scientist. Iris figures out Flash`s secret identity but keeps her discovery a secret. (This could be revisited in a possible sequel.) Mardon also gets visited in jail. We never see the face of his visitor but we see that he`s... wearing a yellow version of the Flash`s costume? And... he seems to be vibrating, and his voice is vibrating too. The man tells Mardon that he`s willing to give him a second chance, not yet though, maybe in the future. But if Mardon screws up a second time there will be no more second chances... ever. Mardon gulps and understands. Pre-credit epilogue or mid-credit scene: Barry is out late at night running as the flash and runs into Superman who asks him if he wants to join his team. Barry`s answer is a mischievous smile. 2016: Aquaman I`m gonna borrow a little from Lion King on this one. Plot It begins with a mother telling a bedtime story to her son about the atlantean kingdom. How the Princess of Atlantis got married to a man that turned out to be cruel and when the princess realized that she ran away and left the kingdom. One day she would return, save her people and end the evil man`s tyrrany. The mother and her son both suffer from a condition: they need to rehydrate a little more often than normal people (either by drinking an extra glass of water or take a bath/shower) or else they`ll get weak. The mother needs to rehydrate every sixth hour, her son every eighth hour. The mother`s name is Atlanna, she`s married to a lighthouse keeper named Tom Curry and her son is named Arthur. Atlanna has a nickname for her son: Orin, which is the Atlantean version of "Arthur". When Arthur gets older his mom disappears for a few months every year but always comes back. As time goes by Arthur starts to discover that he has powers: He can breathe underwater, control underwater creatures and developes superhuman strength and stamina. One day Atlanna disappears and doesn`t come back. Arthur suspects that his mother`s stories are true and his father confirms that they are indeed true and tells him about his first meeting with Atlanna, how he found her washed up on the shore. Arthur and his dad say their goodbyes and he starts to look for his mom and the city of Atlantis. After some searching he finally finds Atlantis, meets the resistance who are trying to overthrow Orm Marius aka: the Ocean Master. Ocean Master has a henchman: King Shark. He meets Mera, a leader of the resistance, finds out that he has to go on a quest to find "the trident of Atlan". After going though lots of troubles he and Mera finds the place where the trident is hidden and he is reunited with his mother. Atlanna has been wounded (it happened years ago), she can still move around and give orders but she can`t engage in most kinds of strenuous activities, like close combat. She`s sorry for leaving Arthur but she couldn`t just stay with him and his father knowing that her people were suffering. Arthur understands. He tries and succeeds in getting the trident from the giant sea monster that guards after it has deemed him worthy. In the end the resistance is victorious, Ocean Master is defeated and believed to be dead, Atlanna abdicates and is reunited with Thomas Curry. Arthur is crowned the next king of Atlantis. One day he visits his parents to tell them how things are going. As Arthur and his parents have their reunion a woman comes walking, It`s Wonder woman in civilian clothing. She tells Arthur that her people and his people were once allies thousands of years ago. She wonders if he`s interested in rekindling that alliance. Arthur finds her proposal intriguing. ( I changed my version a few months after I had seen the movie to be more similar to James Wan`s version.) (And yes, I`m aware that I`m following the Marvel formula with these two examples, but what Marvel is doing is working.) 2017: Justice League See my constructive criticism of it.

2017: Suicide Squad See my constructive criticism of it. And after that... 2018: Solo Batman movie Batman fights crime with his old partner Dick Grayson who calls himself Nightwing now. Barbara has been struggling to walk again for years. Catwoman appears in a few scenes. The movie`s villain could be... I dunno... Clayface? Mid-credit scene: Barbara learns to walk again. It is strongly hinted that she`s gonna batsuit up in a future movie. 2018: Man of Steel sequel Superman meets Supergirl and fights Brainiac. Detective John Jones can be introduced in this one.Followed by...

2019: Batgirl and Supergirl: World`s Finest Batgirl and Supergirl team up to fight a threat and become friends. John Jones is revealed to be Martian Manhunter.

2019: Wonder woman sequel It would take place in modern time, chronologically after the first Justice league or the Batgirl and Supergirl movie. Maybe Circe could be the villain?

2019: Shazam! Just do the David F. Sandberg version with Zachary Levi. It was pretty good. 2020: Justice League 2 Justice League fights Legion of Doom.

2020: Solo Cyborg movie

3. this is actually about nick cave, i swear it, and here is where we get into that more so. here is a cover of nancy sinatra’s “these boots are made for walking” done by the boys next door some time in ‘78. i don’t know why nick sings like that, i’m assuming he had no sense of his vocal range at this time, and i wish the young charlatans had gotten a video but unfortunately the band split up fairly quick due to disputes between rowland and ollie.

6. this track is off of the birthday party’s second record entitled ‘junkyard,’ released in 1981 and expressing more fluidity within their musical style with a certain wounded animal characteristic to the music jolted by the viciousness of nick’s voice. it is around this time, or perhaps some time before, that the band had found themselves penniless in london and retreated to berlin.

7. for some years now, the west berlin music scene has been a bustling hub of creation and innovation. with acts like abwarts and malaria surrounding, a young and reverse individual finds himself forming what would the band pioneering not only unconventional instruments but the proto-industrial movement. the band was based off a fairly simple concept; destruction as a means of creation, a notion adopted from this (x) marxist era essay as well as the factory-line like gentrification of the surrounding brick paradise. thus einstuzende neubauten was formed, and by the first glance nick felt as though he’d net his match. this rubber clad being of fire and metal was blixa bargeld, who you will see in this particular clip. (x) is a performance that shows off the impulsive and chaotic nature of the band as well as their use of out of the ordinary instruments.

8. this meeting of kindred spirits leads to nick definitively deciding to part ways with the birtday party. in an admittedly dick move, nick decided to call he record ‘the bad seeds ep,” presumably hoping to get a better feel for where he was going with his career. rowland and him are hardly speaking and they both have one foot out the door. his song is off of this bad seeds section, where nick begins to show his talent for world building and story telling. 

9. this track’s off the opposite end, the part which belongs more so to the birthday party than it does to the bad seeds. i love this track for all it’s inconsistency, it attacks you from all sides musically and leaves you feeling dazed lyrically for a lack of being able to keep up. to me, this is the best way to bookend the band’s career. it displays maturity in style like no other while also perfecting the sound now heavily associated with not only the birthday party but no wave music in general.

10. admittedly i have neglected nick’s first two records ‘from her to eternity’ and ‘the first born is dead,’ i have a storage complex with my favourite musicians where i won’t listen to their entire discography because if i get stir crazy for new material then i can get familiar with one of the records i haven’t really heard. this track is off of his third record called ‘your funeral, my trial.’ like the previous two this was recorded with the first of the bad seeds lineup comprising of nick cave, mick harvey (of the birthday party), barry adamson (of magazine), blixa bargeld (of einsturzende neubauten), and for a short time hugo race. this track is one of the bad seed’s finest in my opinion, strong on atmosphere and tone with a plot line following a distinct character who’s in a strange bind - a hallmark of nick’s songwriting. this album sound tracked wim wenders film ‘wings of desire,’ with a cameo from nick and rowland in the final act.

11. let’s catch up to rowland for a moment, who is working somewhat parallel to nick as the guitarist for a band called the crime & city solution. rowland only worked with the band for one record, ‘room of lights,’ while in berlin where he was met with his brother, harry, playing bass, mick harvey once more on guitar, and a boy from a band called swell maps on drums named epic soundtracks. this clip is from the aforementioned ‘wings of desire,’ after this rowland and the mentioned members (minus harvey, replaced by rowland’s long-time girlfriend genevive mcguckin) broke off and formed these immortal souls.

12. a lot of musicians have released cover albums, and from what i can tell almost all of kicking against the pricks is except for this track. i wanted to display this song as it shows the broadness of nick’s vocal expression, in that this song makes me want to hang myself.

14. nick continues to make music as the end of the 1980s draws near, the first record of this time period is 'the good son,’ who’s most popular song is undoubtedly 'the weeping song.’ that track is definitely worth a listen as well, it is one of nick’s more popular tracks but it’s a rare full display of blixa’s vocals and a great duet. this song, however, is the title song and has a beautiful choir-sound to it which is present all throughout this album.

15. my favorite nick cave record is tied between this one and one that comes over twenty years after this one, but i’ll be damned if i don’t give this record the utmost appraisal. the album is more definitive in narrative than nick’s previous records, it all seems to be written to fit a particular story line and the sense of momentum in the record is impeccable. this track tells the story of the catholic saint, christina the astonishing, a story that nick was very attached to. as we further our way through his career his interest in catholicism becomes more and more apparent.

16. this song is the slowest on the album 'let love in,’ which is one of his most popular records. the most known track by nick - 'red right hand’ - is also off this album, but in my opinion it’s not the best track off the record. this song is inspired by a story nick read in robert smythe hichens’ “the green carnation,” and the unsettling nature of the story lingers in this song. it’s the counterpart to a song earlier in the album entitled simply 'do you love me?’

17. the huge thing about nick cave is his fascination for murder, something that, the more i learn about and listen to him doesn’t seem to be that huge of a fixation of his. at least not anymore than the bible is. this album, however, murder ballads, is obviously homicide centric. this track features kyle minogue on vocals as eliza day, but she isn’t the only guest vocalist on the album. on another track, henry lee (which is a must hear as well), there is another guest vocalist. pj harvey comes into the maelstrom of nick’s life, and as is displayed in the video, they become seamlessly intertwined in a romance that nick describes as one of the best events of his life. however, in nick’s own words, 'all things move towards their end, i knew before i met her that i would loose her …’

18. after the short lived romance between nick and pj, she leaves him feeling devastated. no one knows for sure why it is they split, but nick sure as hell took it like a landslide. this song is one off of his last album of the 90s, the boatman’s call, which is essentially the pj harvey breakup album. this song has stark similarities to tom waits’ first record, which rings nothing but lovely to my mind.

19. i really. really love rowland s. howard. he means everything to me, this is a song off his first solo album. i don’t know why i chose this one, maybe it’s because the proceeding two songs off it are too difficult for me to hear. he is so talented, he is so beautiful, i don’t know where these impressions of horrendousness come from. rowland is the kindest soul to every walk this earth, but um, here we are with another beautiful display of the sharpness of his guitar playing, and that aching voice of his. he’s my favorite guitarist, and the reason why is that he does not need to sing to tell you how much he is hurting - his guitar does that all on it’s own. we’re about to get heavy. 1999.

20. 2009. alright. so. i’m going to tell you this one thing first; rowland s. howard did not deserve to die. he did not deserve death, he did not deserve any of the numerous heartaches and horrendous experiences that he went through. he went his life a genius, and was scarcely ever recognized for his immense talent and uniqueness. rowland died in 2009 due to a liver disease. he wasn’t able to get a transfer in time. and look, rowland was not ready to die. he wanted so much more, he wanted everything of the world that he hadn’t the chance to reach before. he knew he was going to die, but he did not want to. i will tell you this with my heart bared open and bleedin to you - i would give up my life to have rowland back on this earth in a heartbeat. this song is from the last album he ever released, an album which i still find very difficult to listen to. he did not deserve to die. i don’t know where it is he acquired this seemingly immense hatred of himself, and the contempt for whatever actions he committed. he was the kindest, most loving soul to ever walk this earth, and i refuse to accept his passing as anything other than a true strike of hate by god to humanity. he means wonders to me.

21. so um. sorry. but nick comes back, with that record that i told you competes with henry’s dream to me. it’s called “and no more shall we part” and it is a really difficult record to speak of due to the cohesive story line there seems to be within it. this is the final track of the album, and i believe it sums it up pretty well. i think the line in here; “i think of my friends who died of exposure, and i remember other ones who died from the lack of it.” is in relation to rowland in the latter half. this song is sorrowful, without a doubt. this is the last record blixa did with him, stuck through for years. god bless him.

Salesperson: It's a beautiful sunny day, the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, we got Townsville's largest donut-shaped diamond on display, and there's not a supervillain in sight!

No, this isn't a Narrator monologue, but it sure sounds like one. All it really needs is a "The City of Townsville", but apparently, that's optional in this show. A saleperson is showing off this one-of-a-kind diamond shaped like a donut, and he decides to tempt fate by specifically saying there's no supervillain in sight.

Sure enough, two supervillains arrive: the Fashionistas. They're able to bash through the walls, persumably through Barbarus's raw strength. They really don't do any joke about the donut shape, but they do talk about how they kidnapped their best friend. It's a play on "a diamond is a girl's best friend", which we know because Bianca actually had to explain it.

The salesperson refuses, so they use some perfume. Suddenly, he’s happy to get rid of it! She then talks about how this is such a lifesaver for her, wearing the jewel like one. They can’t even stay consistent; is it a donut, a best friend, a baby, or a life-saver? What is the name of this perfume, according to a female voiceover that says its name every time it’s used?

Worship. Just as the bottle says, it brainwashes people into doing their bidding. This is essentially what they did in Fashion Forward; the only difference is that it's a perfume that hypnotizes people rather than a scarf. That almost distracted me from noticing that Barbarus apparently forgot her lipstick for this shot. Almost.

And yes, this voiceover and text happens every time Worship is used, just so you don't forget it! It's almost like it's trying to use it on the viewer. It's not working.

But first, Dateline: Townsville, hosted by one of the generic newscasters from previous episodes. This episode is constantly interrupted by these newscasts, and all I can think of is that this is their way for this show to have a narrator without bringing back the Narrator.

The Fashionistas break in the newsroom to give him a little bit of Worship, and the newscaster starts to praise them as these great people. This looks like the start of a running gag, but we'll see how that goes.

The Powerpuff Girls finally confront the Fashionistas after they rob an armored car. They sure took a long time to actually fight crime in this episode! Bubbles is wowed by the armored car, because she's like that "I Love Lamp" guy from Anchorman. Blossom is sarcastically wowed that they're up to their old tricks! Either this is a sign of continuity, or they're just referring to how they're stealing stuff.

There is one reason to believe the latter: they decide the best course of action for these people is to just stay perfectly still while they spray perfume on them. Apparently, they didn't watch the news.

This perfume ends up being stronger than that rainbow that somehow didn't affect them in Painbow, since it affects them pretty well. Under the effect of the perfume, they fly off and grab every Ruby in Townsville to give to these fine fashionable women. They didn't even get told this, they immediately knew what they wanted to do.

Eventually, the perfume wears off, and the Puffs realize that they just helped the Fashionistas steal. Bubbles is worried that they're becoming too helpful, but Blossom corrects her and says it must have been that perfume that made them do it. Buttercup has an idea.

Buttercup: What are we going to do, cut off our noses? But our faces would look terrible without one!

I would imagine this would be an okay joke about how the girls don't have visible noses, but it doesn't really work when the show decides to give them nostrils for this one scene. Sad to see that return.

The episode reboots, possibly recovering from a fatal lack-of-nose-related error. We cut to a shoe museum, where the main attraction are glass slippers owned by Cinderella's...horse. Yes, with that pause, because the joke isn't just that these were owned by a fictional character known for losing her shoes. It's that these shoes belong to a animal owned by a fictional character known for losing her shoes.

Barbarus breaks through the walls once again, who would have guessed that "breaking through the walls" line in the intro seems to refer more to the Fashionistas than the Powerpuff Girls themselves, and they ask for the shoes.

The Reboot Puffs get scared off by this, and the Fashionistas run off with the shoes. Yes, because this group of eight people are going to stop these superheroes that can lift buildings full of people. Considering a previous episode had the Powerpuff Girls get bashed by the ordinary human of the two, that's not too far off.

We get another news bulletin from Dateline: Townsville, detailing their plan that they somehow have gotten. They have a blimp named the Bikini Bomber, and I am glad to know that they didn’t forget the Fashionista’s last names. This blimp has a giant vat of Worship to spray on everyone in Townsville to make them their slaves. Again, this was their plot in Fashion Forward. One thing I should mention is that the newscaster is no longer under the spell of the perfume. They could have made these news segments an okay running gag, but we got the “silly Bubbles” jokes instead.

This time, the Reboot Puffs were watching the news, but all they can do is lament that they can’t do anything to stop this from being the worst day ever. I can think of a few worse days, actually, and I don’t just mean the day they make up where they apparently fought a sludge monster at a vomitorium. It had to have been made up; it involved fighting a monster and apparently winning.

Proving even more that the reboot's Professor Utonium is a terrible parent, this random stranger just barges into the house. Thankfully, she's not here to kidnap them, she's here to pretend to not want to help the girls with their situation...and then doing it anyway. I could see where this character could go.

She's a rival perfumist who made a perfume named Divine. This perfume was stolen by the Fashionistas, and turned into the mind control formula. She will not help the Powerpuff Girls, because that's her running gag. That, and they use a music track that ends up being louder than her voice at one point.

...and we get either a parody of those weird perfume ads, or the show just gave up. It has it all. We see our lovable Sitcom Dad swimming in a pool, showing off a six-pack that he has to fill this episode's muscle quota. We see Blossom going back in the Ada Lovelace costume, which seems to only be used to have a girl in a pretty dress. I'd say that's an insult to Ada Lovelace, really. Also, lots of random stock images of animals, most of which aren't even necessary.

It's not all random, as there is a slight theme near the end: we see the same Sitcom Dad swimming in green water and turning into a stock image of a fish, and then a slideshow of garbage. There are a few shows that come to mind when I think of "slideshow of garbage", and you can guess what show I'm thinking of at the moment.

This was all leading to the Powerpuff Girls' new fragrance: Disgust. How fitting. They're going to use this to counteract the perfume. Speaking of which, here's Buttercup summing up what just happened in the previous scene.

More of the "fartsy", really. See, if we point out our segments are pointless and nonsensical, that makes it not pointless and nonsensical! The Powerpuff Girls go into the Bikini Bomber. They decided not to use their noseplugs, for the episode's benefit. The confront the pilots of this dastardly blimp, only to be called out by the Fashionistas standing right behind them.

One of the biggest jokes of the episode, and it's just something stolen from Airplane. Using these blow-up autopilot balloons as a distraction, they start spraying more Worship. So, here were the Reboot Puff's options:

a. Avoid the cloud, and take out the Fashionistas with a spinning back kick.

b. Fly up to the vat and stay perfectly still while the perfume cloud hits them right in the face.

Huh, should have picked A. They do try to resist it this time, possibly trying to use the same power that made the hypnotizing BFF bracelets not work in Frenemy. It doesn't work, and now they're praising them again. We suddenly cut to a shot where some people point at the blimp and say how fashionable it is. Clearly, that was important.

Bianca tells them to give them the vial, so they can persumably throw it in the garbage. They could have told Bubbles to do it herself, but instead, Bianca tells Bubbles to do what's best for them, and she interprets this as throw the vial into the vat. It took me a few viewings to figure out how this makes sense, and all I could gather is that the perfume doesn't overwrite that they still see the Fashionistas as villains. I think.

Thanks to that, we get this lovely shot of a blimp covering Townsville with what looks like fart gas. I'd like to say this was intentional, but if it was, they would not resist adding the fart sound, too.

Right before this gas hits them, we see the Mayor having a press conference dedicating a whole day to these villains that robbed the city throughout this entire day. It's here where they do have an explanation to why the Powerpuff Girls had to watch the news instead of getting a call on their new fancy phones: because he had a visit with them.

Much like the newscaster, neither the Mayor nor the crowd seem to be under the effects of the perfume, but he was going to go through with it anyway. This would make a lot more sense if Worship's effect was permanent and Disgust was the andidote, but as shown by both the Puffs and that newscaster, that's not the case.

We cut to yet another Dateline: Townsville segment, this time finally giving this episode the fast pace it really needed. The blimp gets caught on a radio tower, the Fashionistas parachute down to an angry Disgust-fueled mob. They could have just had cops arrest them when they landed on the ground, but that would be a sad reminder that the Powerpuff Girls don't just bash crooks into jail anymore.

I will say this: there is an okay joke involving a smoke bomb at the end with Nostrilla Dupont. Yeah, they waited until the very end of the episode to finally give that perfumist a name. It would have fit a lot better in the episode that actually used smoke bombs as a running gag, but I'll take any quality I can find.

Does the title fit?

They may have considered a double meaning, with the name of the perfume used in the episode and the way it makes everyone worship the Fashionistas.

How does it stack up?

I could see this plot doing well, since even this show did a better "Fashionistas hypnotize people" episode, but the slow pacing and constant interruption with the newscasts just does not do it for me. I like the idea, and the character of the week is pretty fitting, so I can't do the joke that this episode did my job for me, but it's a pretty low Neutral.

Next, will this reboot improve if my favorite Reboot Puff, relatively speaking, gets multiplied three times? Probably not.

I was checking my locked mailbox for any word from dearest Fliss (there was none at all), but there was some false hopes for soemthing else that have never evevtuated and it originally was one of the major reasons why dear Fliss went mentally, and emotionally off the rails several years back, and took me along with her to despair and therafter wishing to be dead after she left all of a sudden.

An whilst was checking my mailbox which is usually empty but for damn endless bills that can't be paid, there was a marked West Australian Police vehicle parked next door there and they two policemen were VERY quietly talking to the woman homeowner about what I do not know.

The unfenced corner house had them return from another batch of collecting stuff yesterday, but everything else they have just abandoned and left laying about the unfenced yard. That is the entire nature of this entire hellhole area.

It's HOT. It's somewhat cloudly but still HOT. More less clouds than there is of clouds. And of course there is no rain. That is also the nature of thie hellhole area where you have to use water to water plants in 'winter' because there is no rain and it's so dry that everything just dies. Dies like I want to be dead beauae I am not so far away from here with dearest sweet FLiss.

I have no idea why the Police where there and it's pointless to even ask. The abo man with the loose fistfulls of golf clubs he was carrying is like so many other abo's who wander the areas with golf clubs in their hands. Golf clubs have long been a favorite for the criminals and as a favourite weapon for assulting people and animals and breaking and entering.

The old guy seems quite noticeable by his absence for normally he is perched on his front fence watching/staring at everthing and everyone going on by and wildly waving his arms and hands in the air as he gesticulates his displease of everything of this hellhole of which is nevereding and auththorities keep just brushing aside all as if everthing means nothing, until too many innocent people make the SAME complaints and only THEN do the Police deicde they had better put in a brief appearance to make it seem like they're doing soemthing and 'on the job'. - The Police HATE ever coming to this area and so they make it a point not to as much as they can. They may like to differ, (and they DO), but that is the stark reality of this hehllhole and has been for decades. They refuse to do the things normal policing does. Or they do it so piecemeal and in such lacklustre regards it's as if they're never here at all, and that's certainly true too. - Hence the criminals have a free hand to do whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want. And I've lost count the number of times where Police berate innocent citizens whilsy all around them (sometimes quite literally) the ones responsible just prance about with complete abandon and complete derision.for rule of law, least of of all for any officers of the law. They will create complete tales of complete lies and push them onto the Police and DEAMND the Police do something about it. And as soon as the Police are gone, the criminals burst out laughing at how gullible the Police can be played for the fools that they are.....and meanwhile the innocent carry on suffering, without hope, without safety, without any future.......through no fault of their own.......

Chancellor Angela Merkel, the sensible shoes of global politics, is all but certain to win a fourth term by pledging to, well, keep things more or less the way they are. When Germans look at countries that have elected populists, they get scared back toward the political center, says Christina Tillmann, a political analyst at the Bertelsmann Institute, a think tank. And then theres the countrys history: “The whole appeal of a nationalist ideal,” Tillmann says, “just doesnt resonate very well here.”

Merkels longevity is doubtless due to her skills as a politician, but its also because most Germans recognize theyre globalizations winners. Germany has thousands of midsize, family-owned enterprises like Delowhat they call the spread across the country, distributing wealth rather than concentrating it in a few cities. And employees typically feel they have a share in a companys success. Delo, for instance, doesnt use any temporary staff, so everyone from janitors to research scientists is a full employee. Delos adhesives, which can top €3,000 ($3,600) for a container the size of a soda can, are all made at the companys factory outside Munich. And as a private company, Delo can prioritize long-term growthits sales have more than tripled in the past decadeover short-term profits. That glue for credit cards? It took seven years to develop. “A big company would have axed the project long ago,” says Herold, an engineer who in 1997 took over the company with her husband.

Successive German governments have nurtured the Mittelstand, which supplies the world with everything from tiny screws that penetrate concrete, to automated ovens for grilling 400 chickens at a time, to tunnel-boring machines as long as oil tankers. The sectors strength helped bring unemployment down to 5.7 percent in July, from almost 12 percent in 2005. Industry still accounts for more than a quarter of German jobs, a level not seen in the U.S. since 1984, the World Bank says. About 1,500 Mittelstand companies are leaders in their niches, vs. only about 300 in the U.S., says Carsten Linnemann, a lawmaker with Merkels Christian Democratic Union and head of the partys group that coordinates relations with the Mittelstand. “Most Germans know that they profit from trade,” he says.

Although the U.S. has also been a winner from globalization, the wealth has flowed mostly to the top, fostering resentment and the rise of figures such as Donald Trump. In Germany, where exports account for 46 percent of the economy, quadruple the U.S. level, stressing the benefits of globalization plays well with the electorate. A recent study by the Bertelsmann Institute found that calls to overthrow the political elite or erect trade barriers alienate German voters. Merkel isnt shy about her fondness for free trade, and she frequently praises the Mittelstand in campaign stops. On Sept. 1 she dropped in at the annual meeting of a lobbying group for the sector in Nuremberg. “The backbone of the economy is the Mittelstand, so thank you very much,” Merkel tells hundreds of delegates packed into the citys convention hall. “We must fight to ensure we keep our status as a great exporter, and that Made in Germany continues to mean something.”

A TEENAGE girl has been charged following a police pursuit in Perth’s south-eastern suburbs on Friday night that left two innocent drivers injured.

Police allege officers were conducting patrols in Camillo about 7pm when they spotted a Toyota Aurion being driven at high speed along Braemore Avenue.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it sped off heading towards Tonkin Highway.

Police say the car then crashed into two other vehicles near the intersection of Wollaston Avenue and Forrest Road in Haynes before three people ran from the scene. The fleeing group was caught by police following a short foot chase.

The male driver of one vehicle was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital by St John Ambulance with minor injuries.

A female driver of the other vehicle was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken home, also with minor injuries.

The 17-year-old girl, of Hamilton Hill, who was allegedly behind the wheel of the Toyota Aurion has been charged with no motor driver’s licence, reckless driving (evade police) and two counts of fail to stop.

She is due to face Armadale Magistrates Court next month.

A SHOCKING near-miss collision between a car and truck on Albany Highway has been captured on dashcam.

The footage, posted online by Andy Young, shows a P-plate driver in a sedan attempting to overtake several vehicles lined up behind a caravan on the busy highway.

The sedan passes the vehicle filming across a solid white line before it abruptly merges back into traffic as an approaching semi-trailer is forced off the road to avoid a head-on collision.

Several similar videos were posted on social media last year prompting police to urge drivers to be patient while overtaking.

The first was catching up with a close friend, a woman who will have one and be done with it – if that. I asked her whether she has seen a former colleague of ours and out of the blue I heard this: “I can’t,” she answered. ''I don’t want to encourage her drinking. She told me she drinks a bottle of wine most nights on her own. She thinks this is normal and has no idea she’s actually an alcoholic.”

And herein lies the real problem as I see it. Alcohol has become a ritual of sorts, especially socially, for me. As smokers miss the lighting, holding, ashing and stubbing elements of the process as much as they do the nicotine when it is gone, I miss the distraction that comes with having something to do when socialising and, for me, that’s the constant rise and fall of a glass to my lips. Without it, I feel naked, exposed, awkward. It’s this reliance that this endurance test is teaching me I have to change.

A short time later she exits, and this time has the two mini-criminals with her along with the abo schoolaged girl from earlier as well. - They all walk off together down Kalara Way street and go west along Clayton Street. As all this was just about to occur a white 4WD vehicle had pulled up in the street outside the main abo criminal housheold and was crowded around by the abo's. Some got out of it, some got into it, the usual abo criminal distracting and distributing of their numbers so Police and authorities can never track them down or keep track of them.

The very criminal abo thug who had been doing a criminal act yesterday, he quickly got into the 4WD and was whisked away further into Koongamia or further afield, as if to get him out of the way lest any authorities go looking for him. Again this is a very well-worn tactic, useful in case authorities andor Police arrive at the abo main criminal housheold with a search warrant for a specific location and person.

A Redcliffe man has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly stabbing a dog multiple times.

The dog was with a man who went to pick up his own dog that was temporarily staying at his neighbour’s house on Ranson Place, when a fight broke out about 2am on Saturday.

Police said the neighbour allegedly approached the man aggressively with a knife and the other dog moved in between the two. It’s alleged the man stabbed the dog several times, before two other people intervened.

The dog was taken to a nearby residence, and police were called. The man was taken into custody at the property and officers found the dog seriously injured.

The dog needed emergency treatment but is now stable. The vet confirmed the dog had received stab wound injuries to its head, left shoulder and left torso.

The 39-year-old Redcliffe man was charged with animal cruelty, being armed in a way that may cause fear and breach of bail.

He was refused bail and appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday.

He is due to appear in the same court on Thursday, February 15.

Mandurah police have impounded an unregistered car sporting false plates and a poorly drawn swastika.

The Ford, with a backyard-black paint job, was pulled over near the intersection of Anstruther Road and Mandurah Terrace on Australia Day.

Although cars carrying the Nazi symbol aren't breaking any road rules, police said on social media the driver was facing prosecution after being disqualified from driving three times.

The unregistered vehicle was also impounded for carrying false number plates.

"Australia Day does not make you exempt from prosecution," Mandurah Police wrote in a post on Twitter.

Western Australian road laws mean motorists who are repeatedly caught driving without a licence can be hit with massive fines or even imprisoned.

They also face having their vehicles impounded.
