Imagine, for a moment: when Layla comes to Yggdrasil, Basim's is not the only body hanging there. And I don't mean Svala. Layla is weirded out, but goes ahead with logging into the simulation. Except there is no Reader. Basim leaves her there, alone. And when Basim wakes up, he goes to take off and restore the other person on the branches. Curtain falls when, rejuvenated, the person ends up looking very much like Altaїr - or, rather, *Desmond*

This… could totally be the twist ending of Desmond is Fenrir (in a way) idea we had before!

And Layla won’t even recognize Desmond since he’ll be wearing a Hidden One outfit (maybe that looks like a combination of Basim’s Mirage outfit and the Assassin robes of his ancestors as a reference?)

Although, this does bring up the sad ending that Eivor, who Basim most probably fell in love with, is already dead as well as Hytham.

Unless…

Okay, Hytham would be more of a case of “I’m satisfied with this life but… you two still have more things to do, right?” and it will definitely be bittersweet.

As for Eivor…

She’s a Sage.

Maybe this time, Basim made Aletheia believe that reviving him would mean they could be a family again but Basim was just using her (and Layla) so he could reunite their family once more.

By finding the latest Sage of Odin.

As for Desmond?

Well… he was just thinking that he’d return to his time and finish what he had started before the whole ‘need to die to save the world’ bit.
