Catching Up
It's my wonderful friend @minky-for-shortâs birthday so I wrote her a fic! And I'm posting just in case anyone read my fic 'I will love you if I never see you again' and wanted more dad Jupeter and more of their daughter!
Bianca has an announcement for her dads and there's only one way Nureyevs can communicate. And if youâd leave a comment on Ao3, Iâd so appreciate it!
------
There were many reasons they werenât a conventional family.
There was their clunky surname that was hard to wrap your mouth around. Steel-Nureyev. Or maybe Nureyev-Steel, theyâd never formally decided which way it went. Mostly because they never really had to use it and had never needed to write it down in any official capacity.
There was the fact that a female sewer rabbit lived in their modest Hyperion apartment, turning it into a tiny apartment and the rabbit into, technically, a house rabbit. It was fine, they rarely had guests over that werenât Rita, Jet or the Aurinkos. Or Mick but he was terrified of Small Fry, as Juno insisted on still calling her.
There was the fact that, for months long stretches at a time, Juno and Nureyev would have no idea where their eldest daughter was. They would hear nothing from her or her wife, Desta, not so much as a message over their comms. Nothing but Junoâs anxious, obsessive tuning in to the police scanners of all the major planets and some from the outer rim to boot. Rita had hacked his comms so heâd be able to pick it up and Nureyev pretended he didnât know how much he clung to it and that he wasnât equally as worried, all the time, gnawing away deep down inside himself.
But there was also the fact that when, finally, theyâd hear her boots in the hallway or see the coat that used to be Junoâs hanging on the coat rack by the door and hear her singing from her old bedroom, when their Bee Bee finally came home, the cards would always come out.
Juno tried to be a good host, tried to catch their attention to offer drinks but they were already focused. They sat across the dining room table from each other, like they always did, with the same matching smiles and narrowed eyes and playful determination. Nureyev laid the cards out himself, as he always did, so many that they took up a whole table in an array that still didnât make a lick of sense to Juno, much to his irritation.
âHave they always done this?â Desta asked, her voice soft and quiet as always. Her lips were a bright blue today and she was smiling more than usual, âThis game?â
Her eyes were on Bianca, with the same exasperated tenderness Juno was sure sheâd see in his own eye, fixed on Nureyev.
âIt used to be chess,â Juno hummed as he poured wine, âHe taught her to play when she was six, they practised every night until she could beat him. Then he would cheat and she had to still win and tell him after how he cheated. Then they both cheated. And then they moved onto this. Same system, just with a game a million times more complicated.â
Desta looked at the splayed out cards, at the rapid fire way Nureyev dealt and shrugged, accepting the wine Juno held out to her and sipping mildly. Juno wished he could have the same blase attitude to not having a clue how Rangian street poker worked.
âCanât you guys catch up normally?â he sighed, bringing Nureyev the glass of red wine he didnât need to ask to know he wanted, âLike with a conversation? Iâve heard some families have those.â
âThis is way more fun,â Bianca waved away her own glass and squeezed her mamaâs hand instead, âCos I get to catch up and beat my daddy at something.â
Nureyevâs eyebrow arched, âConfidence. An interesting play, given how our last game went.â
Bee Bee hummed, tilting her head so her earrings rang. Desta had clearly made them, they were exquisitely wrought discs of ceramic and bronze, painted with tiny flowers. Sheâd been doing a lot of pottery work lately, straying away from her usual canvasses.
âFunny, daddy, I donât recall how our last game went. I prefer to focus on the game in front of me. First rule of thieving, right?â
Nureyevâs smile curled up at one end and he was clearly suppressing a chuckle, âLetâs start then. You can have the first question.â
Bianca tilted her head in thought, âHmm...have you read Sephyâs manuscript?â
Nureyevâs eyes widened, âWhat? Have you? Heâs not been letting anyone read it until his editor gets back to him, not even Idun!â
Her eyebrow lifted and her grin became truly smug, âIs that your question, daddy?â
He bristled the way a cornered cat would, âNo. I want to know what planet you were just on.â
âWorks for me. Letâs play!â
If Juno had thought Nureyev was fast back at the Oasis, now he thought he must grow four extra arms to keep up. He and Bianca were a flurry of effortlessly manicured, pale, spidery hands and laser burned, clever fingered, dark brown hands, all working to outwit the other set in ways that there was no hope of following. Juno gave up quickly, motioning Desta over to the sofa to the side of the table, making polite small talk about her latest gallery opening on Jupiter where the art scene had gone wild at the idea of an anonymous artist with such magnificent, bold pieces. He didnât know a damn thing about art, especially good art, but the way the kidâs eyes lit up when she talked about her work was good enough for him.
They broke off when the hand ended, Bianca grinning in triumph and Nureyev scowling and gritting his teeth.
âNo,â he said, short and clipped, âMy own son, my flesh and blood, whom I gave life to will not let me read his manuscript.â
Biancaâs smile softened a little, âHe just cares about your opinion. He doesnât want you to read it until itâs absolutely perfect and even then heâs probably going to still worry you donât like it.â
Nureyev gave a non committal grunt but it was clear sheâd mollified him. Juno would have piped up and told him that he hadnât been allowed to read it either but Nureyev already knew that. And he knew it didnât stop either of them being so damn proud of their son, selling his first novel to a publisher at just twenty years old, after a childhood of watching him typing away on his comms, writing his little stories.
âYour turn, daddy,â Bianca smiled sweetly, shamelessly using every weapon sheâd had since she was born to wrap the galaxyâs greatest thief around her little finger.
He drew in a breath and set his shoulders. Juno had seen him square up for fights before, he knew that look behind his cat eye glasses. Clearly Bianca had caught him on the back foot, bringing a new level to the game that he hadnât known she could. But he was drawing himself tight as a bow, his knuckles threatening to burst out of his skin, his teeth showing under his lip.
Once again, Juno wished that they could catch up with their children over dinner maybe, cups of tea and biscuits even, like normal people.
âWhat planet were you just on?â Nureyev asked again, still stuck on his first question.
Bianca smiles broadly, dark gold eyes wandering around the room, âDid you and mama redecorate?â
âPlay,â Nureyev looks insulted by her question, setting to the cards.
Juno just watched this time, heâd learned that a comfortable silence was best with Desta sometimes. He saw a lot of his younger self in the girl his daughter had brought back from one of her first big jobs. That didnât bode well at all for the poor kid so he was always careful to give her space and just be a quiet presence beside her. It seemed to be working, she shifted closer to him after a minute of nothing but cards hitting the table, sounding like bird wings, and actually rested her head on his shoulder.
Juno smiled and let his eye wander over the table, not trying to make sense of the erratic movements and patterns that seemed to rise and fall apart within seconds, but just watching his husband and their daughter be brilliant at something. He had fun finding the eerie similarities in their expressions and their mannerisms, how she looked so much like him but acted so much like Nureyev.
He was so deep in his own thoughts that the only reason he didnât miss the reveal was Nureyevâs startled noise of dismay.
âWhat?â he looked down at their cards like he was looking at a cat with two heads doing a tap dance across the table, âBut...but IâŠâ
Bianca tilted her head, humming innocently, âSomething wrong, daddy?â
âHow did you do that?â he demanded, stunned, âIâve never used that method with you and I invented it myself, how could you know about it? How could you counter it so fast?â
âThis is all very nice but all I care about is if that wallpaper is new,â she actually pretend to stifle a yawn. Juno had to swallow a laugh very quickly or heâd have been sleeping on the couch.
Nureyev trembled, âYes. Yes, itâs new, we redecorated after your motherâs pet chewed through the plaster.â
âHey, her new teeth were coming though, okay?â Juno piped up indignantly, âThey were hurting.â
Bad move, all of Nureyevâs frustrations flowed at him like a blistering wind via the glare he gave him. Maybe he should start fluffing the couch cushions now. Desta giggled beside him.
âYou have something, donât you?â Nureyev swiveled back to his eldest with realisation chasing away the clouds annoyance, âSomething big. Thatâs why youâre playing like this.â
Bianca gave no reaction but a pretty smile, âAll you have to do is ask, daddy. Well, ask and win, I guess.â
âWas I born yesterday, treasure?â Nureyev sniffed, âI know how this game is played. I will ask but only when I am in the correct position, perfectly poised to strike.â
âCool, daddy,â Bianca seemed more interested in her nails, her posture looking like she was having a lazy brunch with a friend.
Desta murmured softly, close to Junoâs ear, âThey do...love each other, right?â
âHard to tell sometimes, isnât it?â Juno whispered back after a rough chuckle, âBut yeah, theyâre devoted to each other. Theyâre just like this.â
They continued to be âlike thisâ for another half hour, playing round after round, questions fired like shots by Nureyev and tossed out lazily by Bianca.
âDid you pull that job over in Olympus with the melting bank notes and not come visit us?â
âSo howâs your yoga class? Does Bitch Jan still go?â
âWhy do you call your mother when heâs at work when you know I wonât be there?â
âThat necklace is cute, is it new?â
âHow the hell did you win that last goddamn round?â
âI saw you having dinner at that place on Third Street on Auntie Ritaâs feed, is it any good? I was thinking of taking Desta.â
âWhat exactly did I do to deserve such a terrible child? No that is not my question, shut up Juno!â
The rounds went on and Nureyevâs blood pressure steadily climbed. He lost again and again to Bianca, with her barely breaking a sweat, having to give up the mundanities of their empty nester life, his attempts at baking and their redecorating and the silly streams they liked to watch.
Juno had never seen this happen before. Heâd never say it out loud but Bee Bee had always been the better player, when you looked at it all together, but there had never been a game where Nureyev hadnât taken more than a few rounds from her and it had never been so easy.
Juno narrowed his eye and studied his daughter, now with her feet up on the table and rocking her chair back on two legs, clearly enjoying this. But equally as clearly up to something. Nureyev had it dead to rights, there was something she held, something that had to be big with all the effort she was putting in to make him unwrap it.
Before he could help it, Juno was adding it up. And, in less than a moment, in less time than it took for Bianca to tear her winning hand into shreds and playfully blow them in Nureyevâs direction, he had it.
âHoly shit!â he yelped, slapping a hand over his mouth a second too late.
Bianca shot him a sparkling grin and a look in her eyes like she knew heâd get it eventually. She put her finger to her red painted lips.
âWhat?â Nureyev looked like he didnât know whether to flip the table or cry now, eyes darting between the two of them, âOh come on! Now he knows?â
âHe is a detective,â Bee Bee pointed out, âAnd you are supposed to be good at this game, daddy. You are getting old, huh?â
Nureyev grit his teeth, finger trembling in the air, a million cutting responses crowding on his tongue. But then he dropped his hand to the table and inhaled sharply, letting it come out again in a long, low hiss.
âYou know what? Letâs do this. My question...what are you keeping from me, Bianca Nureyev?â
Bee Bee only smiled, almost in acceptance, and pondered a moment, âUm...did you like that podcast I sent you?â
The creases on Nureyevâs brow deepend, âBut...but you know that? I told you that? Weeks ago?â
Bee Bee looked untroubled, âPass or play, daddy?â
âPlay,â Nureyev eventually said, after a long moment of him clearly wracking his brain for what new machination their daughter had just put into motion, deciding to let it run.
The difference was palpable, even from where Desta and Juno sat. Before sheâd been snake-like in how quick and deadly her movements were, now she was deferential, walking right into his snares without a care, doing something no self respecting Nureyev or Steel had ever done. She was playing fair. All while smiling like sheâd already won.
It was a quick slaughter. No one was surprised when they turned their cards over and Nureyev held the winning hand. No one but Nureyev himself.
âI...I donât understandâŠâ he muttered to himself, as his hands moved automatically to tear his cards, âHow did you...after everythingâŠâ
âWould you like your answer?â Bianca swung her legs down, leaning close, now intent and eager.
Nureyev almost looked terrified, like he was waiting for a trap to spring around his neck but he couldnât see how yet, âYes...yes, fine. Whatâs this big secret?â
Bianca beamed, like sheâd been waiting for this since she walked through the door, âYouâre going to be a grandpa.â
Nureyev didnât seem to register it at first, his face still set in puzzlement. Then his eyes went very, very wide and he sat bolt upright, jaw practically hitting his chest.
Bianca laughed, already standing to go and hug him as tight as she could, only just managing to get out her apologies, her assurances that it was just too hard to resist teasing him, through her giggles. If the way Nureyev clasped her close and buried his face in her cloud of hair, already crying, she was forgiven.
Juno gave himself a moment before he jumped up and pounced on them, a moment to watch them and just how much they loved each other.
A moment to think how, right now, he was so glad they werenât a conventional family.

first love! au - jaemin
âł based off of this idea i had
âł type: bullet scenario
âł warning(s): n/a
âł a/n: the amount of hw i couldâve finished instead of making this :â)
okay letâS GO
we all know how passionate is jaemin when it comes to volunteering and giving back to the community
so imagine him volunteering weekly at a daycare center near his neighborhood
he absolutely loves and adores all the children he meets and acts like a big brother figure to them
his reason for helping out in the daycare in the first place is that when he was younger, his mom would put him in a daycare and bc she had to work, and he remembers the older boys and girls who volunteered there when he was just a kid
he remembers how nice they were and the way they treated him, especially the boy who would always secretely give him a piece of candy every time he came in, and he remembers the sweet girl who would always boop his nose and ruffle his hair
jaemin wanted to reciprocate their love and affection to the kids at the daycare so thatâs why when he first heard from renjun that they needed more people, jaemin jumped on that train so quick
now heâs been helping out at the daycare (w jeno, renjun, and hyuck as well) for about a year and a half
the kids absolutely admire him and would always cheer whenever they see jaemin walk in
the people who work at the daycare were very impressed at jaeminâs ability to memorize every single childâs face and name and even remember little things about them
and when a new child joins, jaemin easily makes them feel welcome by hovering around them and asking them to join in on games
heâll tie back a little girlâs hair or give her a cute braid and heâll give a little boy a piggyback ride around the center just to hear him laugh
also you better believe jaeminâs fiercely protective of these kids,,,like fiercely protective
one time a little girl named minji tripped and scraped her knee, she only let out one small cry and jaemin was already sprinting across the room, reaching little minji and scooping her up in his arms, gently tucking her head into his neck and quietly shushing her
he then proceeded to clean the scrape so it doesnât get infected, all while carrying minji in his arms, and then after he read her a story to help her fall asleep soundly in his hold
renjun took a pic of this moment and jaemin loved it so much he made it his wallpaper
since jaeminâs super super good w the kids, the people at the daycare put him in charge of helping out the new volunteers and showing them how to do things
and thatâs where you come in !! youâve been desperately trying to find a place that takes volunteers bc you may or may not have made a stupid decision that almost got you suspended if it wasnât for your parents pleading to the school to ease up the punishment
now instead of suspension, the schoolâs making you complete at least 200 hours of community service as a chance to âwhip you into shapeâ
ofc you didnât want to but it was better than getting suspended, so you reluctantly accepted the deal and now here you were, standing inside a daycare in front of a boy w peach pink hair and a smile too bright for your liking
âhi! you must be the new volunteer, my nameâs jaemin and iâm in charge of helping you. nice to meet you!â he holds out his hand and you have to physically restrain yourself from flinching
you see, you werenât the social type, the complete opposite actually, so you could already tell that this guy was someone you werenât going to be all buddy buddy with
but you needed the hours so you just sucked it up and managed to send him your best smile and shook his hand
ânice to meet you too...iâm y/nâ you replied quietly
right behind jaemin were three other boys who looked about the same age as him; one was currently painting a picture w a 4 year old girl, another was sitting on the floor w a group of kids and reading them a story, and the last one was running around the room chasing a little boy
jaemin looked over his shoulder to see what you were looking at and laughed âoh i should probably introduce you to everyone else. the one painting is renjun, the one on the floor is jeno, and the loud one is donghyuckâ
you blinked at him as he gestured for you to follow him inside, which you did, but immediately regretted it when five children ran up to you and peered up at you curiously
they kept talking over each other, possibly trying to ask you a bunch of questions, and you felt overwhelmed
sensing your obvious discomfort, jaemin quickly moved over to stand next to you and clapped his hands, catching their attention
âokay kids thatâs enough, y/nâs our newest helper so make be nice and welcoming okay? go on and play w the others, iâll be right backâ
and to your suprise, the kids responded back w a loud âyes nanaâ and left
jaemin looked at you sheepishly âsorry about that, they get really excited when a new person comes by since itâs usually us four that come inâ
âitâs only the four of you volunteering here? i wouldâve thought thereâd be moreâ
jaemin sent you a sad smile as he showed you to the back room where he gestured for you to sit on the leather chair as he sat across from you
âi thought the same too, but whenever new people come they tend to leave pretty quickly afterâ âwhy?â
he sent you another sad smile âthey find it difficult to take care of the kids. my friends and i are the ones whoâve volunteered the longest, so the centerâs pretty grateful for usâ
your heart aches slightly at the revelation and you peer out the door to look at the children, heart aching even more as you see them running around and laughing
âso, what brings you here?â jaemin asked, and you winced at the question, causing him to raise his eyebrows
âi..um...i made a really stupid decision..and my schoolâs making me do community service to make up for it.â
jaemin let out a soft oh and you mentally slap yourself; great, this guy probably thinks iâm a terrible person whoâs only here bc iâm forced to, which technically isnât a lie butâ
âdo you like kids, y/n?â jaeminâs next question interrupted your train of thought and you blink before it fully registered in your brain
âoh uh..yeah i do actually. i just..iâm not...very social..so i donât know how to act around them yet.â
jaemin nodded his head at your answer, a serious look on his face, before he broke out into a soft smile and walked over to you, placing his hand gently on your shoulder
âwell thatâs good enough for me! listen, i know you probably think that i think youâre a bad person bc of the reason youâre here, but trust me when i say stuff like that doesnât matter to me. just the fact that you came here instead of somewhere else says a lot. iâll be here to help you out if you need it, so donât worry y/n. iâll make sure you not only complete your required hours, but that you also have fun doing it.â
jaemin grinned once more before he turned around and walked out âiâm gonna grab your uniform really quick, so stay put!â
you just sat there staring at the door in shock at what you just heard...it was the first time someoneâs been that nice and nonjudgmental towards you
you glanced down at the comm. service log sheet in your hands and sighed âmaybe....this wonât be so badâ
for the next few weeks, you and jaemin are practically glued to each other as he helps you get into the swing of things
as expected, you fumble a couple of times, but jaemin is always there to help you back up and even offers some advice so you donât make the same mistake
since you two spend a lot of time together, it was inevitable that you two would grow close pretty quickly, and not just jaemin, but renjun, jeno, and donghyuck too
you sometimes found yourself being invited to hang out w them outside of the daycare and itâs so..refreshing to be around them
as the weeks pass, you also slowly become fond of the kids and vice versa; youâre especially fond of a little boy named juhyun who loves to hold your hand every chance he gets
and as jaemin watches you play w the kids, he canât help but smile at how much more comfortable youâve become, not just w him, his friends, or the kids, but w yourself too; he can tell youâre rlly enjoying your time here
and as you two spend more time together, and learn more things about each other, you two canât deny the feelings brewing in the depths of your heart
jaeminâs kind, and self-less personality is what drew you to him and your willingness to learn and awkward, yet endearing nature is what drew jaemin to you
he was never rlly quite sure what his feelings for you were, until he witnessed something about you heâs never seen before
there was a new volunteer at the daycare and as usual jaemin was in charge of showing him around; you were playing w juhyun when jaemin left for a bit to grab the new guyâs uniform
at first everything was normal, but then you heard little areum start crying and your head whipped up so fast; areum was sitting next to a pile of toppled blocks and the new guy was standing next to her, glaring
âquit your crying, your block tower was in my wayâ his sharp tone caused areum to cry even louder
appalled, you stood up and made your way over to areum, carefully picking her up in your arms and tried to calm her down; you sent a glare to the new guy âwhat was that for? sheâs just a little girl, you donât have to be so rudeâ
the guy rolled his eyes âsheâs annoying thatâs whatâ
âif sheâs so annoying then why donât you leave? itâs obvious you donât get along w kids so why are you even here?â
the guy stepped closer to you âyou canât tell me what to doâ
âbut i canâ you breathed a sigh of relief at the sound of jaeminâs voice, and the guy whipped around
jaemin was standing there w a bright grin on his face, but the way he was clenching the uniform in his hands told you that he wasnât actually happy
âhere at the daycare, we put the well-being of the children as our first priority and ensure that they are safe and happy. however, since youâve shown behavior that goes against that policy, iâm afraid iâm going to have to ask you to leave.â
the guy scoffed, but left w/o a word, knowing that this was a fight he couldnât win
when jaemin came back, he saw you kneeling in front of areum, gently cradling her face and wiping away her tears, and he felt his heart clench tightly at the sight
the worry on your face and the way you held areum as if she were a fragile piece of glass solidified his feelings for you
however, he was still unsure of how to express those feelings to you
and unbeknownst to him, you felt the same exact way :â)
a few more months pass and one day jaemin decided to walk you home from the daycare
on your way there, he asks you the comm. service hours thing is going and you falter a bit, biting your bottom lip shyly
jaemin, as perceptive as ever, quickly notices and asks if youâre okay
you stop walking and sigh, looking up and locking eyes w him; your heart skips a beat when you take in his iridescent eyes, twinkling as they reflect the light of the moon, you could get lost in them forever
âjaemin, thereâs something i need to tell you...â you pause and he nods, urging you to continue âmy community service hours...i completed all 200 hours a few weeks agoâ
his eyes widen in surprise âseriously?! wait, if thatâs the case then you donât have to volunteer at the daycare anymore right?â you nod your head slowly â......then, why?â
you take a deep breath as you force yourself to step closer to him; jaemin gulps when you do so, but doesnât make any move to stop you
âwell itâs simple, iâve fallen in loveâ jaemin felt his heart stop and his breath caught in his throat
âiâve fallen in love w the kids, theyâre my absolute world now and i would do anything for them. iâve fallen in love w the daycare, itâs my safe haven. iâve fallen in love with little juhyun who keeps falling asleep on me. but most importantly...â you step closer â...iâve fallen in love with you, na jaeminâ
jaeminâs chest fills with so much happiness and adoration for you as your words register through his brain. his beautiful bright smile appeared on his face, and you canât help but smile back
and thatâs all it takes for jaemin to close the tiny gap btwn the two of you; he brings his hands up and gently cups your cheeks as his lips land softly on top of yours
the kiss is sweet and so jaemin-like that you feel your stomach doing all kinds of flips and tricks; you reach out and grab onto his jacket, tugging him closer to you as the kiss deepens
you two break apart when the need for air becomes apparent, but jaemin leans forward and rests his forehead against yours
âthatâs funny, bc iâve fallen in love with all of those things tooâ you start blushing âexcept for juhyun tho, that little guy needs to back offâ
you giggle at the playful glare on his face and jaeminâs expression softens at the sound; he plants another kiss on your lips and...letâs just say your parents werenât too happy when you came back home after the sun went down :â)
the next day, you and jaemin walked in the daycare hand-in-hand, receiving knowing looks from renjun and jeno, and a loud whoop from hyuck
and when the kids saw you and jaemin sneak in a quick kiss, chaos ensued
âjaemin and y/n sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g!â âjaemin just kissed y/n!!â âeww theyâre kissingâ
you just laugh and scold the kids for their teasing, and jaemin kisses you again for fun

We frequently see screenshots of environments, exteriors, and characters. ChrisGoingSpace has gone the route less traveled and successfully captured a stunning shot of the interior of a Vanguard Hoplite that makes many of us question what our favorite ship actually is.
Nailed it!
