Omg OMG wait. Ellie and Otto possibly having been Lab partners years ago. They stopped once their difference of paths was made clear. Maybe Gisu asks about it and Otto is like "Well, she was very talented and was making pretty big breakthroughs but..it seemed she always were pushing the limits, taking dangerous risks, upping the power. She always wanted..more. she wanted power even at the cost of others. I couldn't live with that so I left."
And then if Gisu asks Ellie about it and Ellie goes "That old coot was always taking the safe way, he was wasting his talents with his boring machines while I was doing exciting experiments. Sure some of his machines were useful but he could have poured his talent into something that would change the world, make tomorrow mean more than today. He was always so slow. Listen kid, he abandoned me when I needed him most, if you think you're not replaceable then you're dreaming kid."
