(lol buggybastard your tags made me laugh) but they also, along with a few other tags and comments made me want to come on here and say something a little more explicitly about why i wrote this
When i say The Enemy, and Villain, i mean somebody like my previous client, who was an executive at a major oil company, who spent his life personally profiting off the destruction of our environment, who sat in meetings and participated in decision making about things like purposefully derailing the development of sustainable alternative fuels.
And the reason it is important to look at in the context i am highlighting is because it is really easy to think of people like this as inhumanly evil in a sort of movie antagonist way. But usually, they aren't. Usually, they are people you would probably actually like if you met them.
That seems like a really important piece of the puzzle when we are talking about changing things for the better.
I have another client right now, and it's much the same. I'm not sure what his exact job was before he retired last year, but i know he had a high corporate position in a medical insurance company, and that's the sort of person i tend to think of as Bad.
But he's very sweet and pleasant, and he and his wife worry about the local ecology and have beehives set up in their yard because they care about that sort of thing. He loves his two little dogs, and he keeps a little herb garden on his deck that he personally waters and cares for, and his family and friends and neighbors love him. He's like, a very nice man. Who has a seven million dollar house paid for by helping an industry that i consider to be incredibly harmful to our society.
Does that mean it would be morally correct for me to steal from him while i am here house sitting and taking care of his dogs?
Let's look at the oil industry guy. He sat in those board meetings, and i have to assume some of those meetings had to do with suppressing alternative fuels. If he raised a big fuss about it, maybe he would have been fired, and the company still would have done it. I wasn't there, but i don't think he did raise a big fuss. How evil does that make him, really?
I don't think he's a great person, and i highlight a personal defect of his with my story about his dog. I even think he has a particularly bad iteration of this defect. But in my line of work i meet people all the time who don't do what's best for their dog when it's inconvenient for them. And i can't make them. It is sad, and wrong, but depressingly common.
I would say, to be able to have these jobs in these positions at large immoral corporations does require some kind of disconnect or moral flexibility. But what kind of person are we really talking about?
I can talk about "eat the rich" and bemoan the evils of these industries (and i truly do believe that these companies and their actions are evil in a major way) ... but could i pull the trigger if i was facing this actual man over the barrel of a loaded gun? And if i could, would that make me a good or bad person?
My current client, the medical insurance company man, wanted to send his kids to the best schools he could. And he did. Wouldn't i do that too? The company who pays him, i'm sure, has participated in absolutely ruining the public's access to quality health care. They have also, i'm equally sure, helped fund important medical research. With the goal of increasing their profits. It's not a simple black and white situation is what i'm getting at, despite the very clear and simple view i have that these medical insurance companies are awful and must be stopped.
That company has no Man At The Top. There is no one person who can walk into work and say "we're going to stop doing this thing and do this other thing instead." It is run by a board who are responsible to shareholders etc etc and the accountability is spread and thinned until it practically doesn't exist. This is supposed to be compensated for with government regulation, but that isn't happening right either.
Personally, i don't think i could make a bunch of money at a job like that and feel ok. But having been homeless more than once, i'm not actually 100% sure what decision i would make if i had an opportunity at that kind of income. Because there are just about zero things this man could have done in his position that would have changed anything for the better in any significant way. One could argue that rather than quitting and letting a worse person take his job, it was better to take this company's money in the form of as high a salary as he could get, and spend a percentage of it on things like beehives and the charitable donations i know he's made. So what responsibilities to society did he really have, and what kind of person are we really talking about?
It sucks. It sucks to meet these people and have to come to terms with the fact that many of them are not even total assholes, let alone someone it is easy to hate.
And now we get back to John Hammond. He is a satisfying fictional character to realize is a villain, because he IS The Man At The Top, nothing about Jurassic Park happens without him. If he stops, Jurassic Park stops. There IS accountability. So when he dies it feels like justice (and solves a problem). And that's fiction for you.
But the part about his character as written that is so brilliantly depicted is: he is, in fact, a sweet old man. We the reader spend most of the book really liking him. He cares about people, and, for example, he refutes the lawyer's idea of putting Jurassic Park behind a steep paywall for the sake of becoming wealthy, and instead insists that everyone should have access to this place of wonder, even at the cost of profit for himself. He is, fundamentally, mostly a decent normal person.
His flaw is that he will not hear the people telling him he is wrong. He won't hear that his "place of wonder" is going to result in people's death, and probably a worse world for everyone on the planet.
Many people refuse to hear that they are wrong. The difference is, he has money and (therefor) power. And that changes the scope of his human flaw into something that can have a huge negative impact on the world.
But his flaw is still a normal human flaw.
We all know people who are otherwise good people but have a hard time acknowledging or accepting when they are wrong. This does not make them Evil. It's not good, but usually it results in things like, idk, being 20 minutes late to Aunt Suzy's birthday dinner or whatever.
I believe in order to achieve the kinds of change we want to see, we need to create a societal awareness of the difference between having common human flaws in an average situation and having common human flaws in a situation that is full of mundane activities but which ultimately perpetuate the large scale evils of a broken system.
And, as a society, to start to have a group perception of what that actually looks like, who is actually participating in those scenarios, and what a truly good person should do in those situations.
After all, I myself have worked at companies i despise the ethics of in exchange for money to live my life. Even now, i am essentially being paid in Evil Medical Insurance Company money to take care of these dogs. And i can't even get health insurance right now.
It's easy to understand that Coke and Nestle and Exxon and these companies are EVIL, but the people who make up these companies often cannot be accurately defined by a sort of comic book image of them, even tho that concept is easier for us to hold in our minds.
If we as a society conceive of these evil things as only being done by Evil™ people, we prevent normal people from realizing when they or someone they know is being the villain ...because they know they are not Evil™
And it prevents us from addressing the true problems of a system that makes it easy for normal people to do these evil deeds as a part of a normal life.
i want to talk about real life villains
Not someone who mugs you, or kills someone while driving drunk, those are just criminals. I mean VILLAINS.
Not like trump or musk, who are... cartoonishly evil. And not sexy villains, not grandiose villains, not even satisfyingly two dimensional villains it is easy to hate unconditionally. The real villains.
I had a client who was a retired executive for one of the big oil companies, i think it was Shell or Chevron. Had a home just outside of San Francisco that was wall to wall floor to ceiling full of expensive art. Literally. I once accidentally knocked a painting off the wall because it was hanging at knee height at the corner of the stairs, and it had a little brass plaque on it, and i looked up the name of the artist and it was Monet's apprentice and son-in-law, who was apparently also a famous painter. He had an original Andy Warhol, which should have been a prize piece for anyone to showcase -- it was hanging in the bathroom. I swear to god this guy was using a Chihuly (famous glass sculptor) as a fruit bowl. And he was like, "idk my wife was the one who liked art"
I was intrigued by this guy, because in the circles i run this dude is The Enemy. right? Wealthy oil executive? But as my client, he was... like a sweet grandpa. A poor widower, a nice old man, anyone who knew him would have called him a sweetheart. He had a slightly bewildered air, a sort of gentle bumbling nature.
And the fact that he was both of these things, a Sweet Little Old Man and The Enemy, at the same time, seemed important and fascinating to me.
He reminded me of some antagonist from fiction, but i couldn't put my finger on who. And when i did it all made sense.
John Hammond.
probably one of the most realistic bad guys ever written.
If you've only ever seen the movie, this will need some explaining.
Michael Crichton wrote Jurassic Park in 1990, and i read it shortly thereafter. In the movie, the dinosaurs are the antagonists, which imo erases 50% of the point of the story.
book spoilers below.
In the book, John Hammond is the villain but it takes the reader like half the book to figure that out. Just like my client, John is a sweet old man who wants lovely things for people. He's a very sympathetic character. But as the book progresses, you start to see something about him.
He has an idea, and he's sure it's a good one. When someone else dies in pursuit of his dream, he doesn't think anything of it. When other people turn out to care about that, he brings in experts to evaluate the safety of his idea, and when they quickly tell him his idea is dangerous and needs to be put on hold, he ignores his own experts that he himself hired, because they are telling him that he is wrong, and he is sure he is right.
In his mind, he's a visionary, and nobody understands his vision. He is surrounded by naysayers. Several things have proven too difficult to do the best and safest way, so he has cut corners and taken shortcuts so he can keep moving forward with his plans, but he's sure it's fine. He refuses to hear any word of caution, because he believes he is being cautious enough, and he knows best, even though he has no background in any of the sciences or professions involved. He sends his own grandchildren out into a life-threatening situation because he is willfully ignorant of the danger he is creating.
THIS is like the real villains of the world. He doesn't want anyone to die. Far from it, he only wants good things for people! He's a sweet old man who loves his grandchildren. But he has money and power and refuses to hear that what he is doing is dangerous for everyone, even his own family.
I think he's possibly one of the most important villains ever written in popular fiction.
In the book, he is killed by a pack of the smallest, cutest, "least dangerous" dinosaurs, because a big part of why we read fiction is to see the villains face thematic justice. But like a cigarette CEO dying of lung cancer, his death does not stop his creation from spreading out into the world to continue to endanger everyone else.
I think it is really important to see and understand this kind of villainy in fiction, so you can recognize it in real life.
Sweetheart of a grandfather. Wanted the best for everyone. Right up until what was best for everyone inconvenienced the pursuit of his own interests.
And my client was like that too. His wife had died, and his dog was now the love of his life, and she was this little old dog with silky hair in a hair cut that left long wispy bits on her lower legs. Certain plant materials were easily entangled in this hair and impossible to get out without pulling her hair which clearly hurt her. When i suggested he ask his groomer to trim her lower leg hair short to avoid this, he refused, saying he really liked her usual hair cut.
I emphasized that she was in pain after every walk due to the plant debris getting caught in her leg hair, and a simple trim could put an end to her daily painful removal of it, and he just frowned like i'd recommended he take a bath in pig shit and said "But she'll be ugly" and refused to talk about it anymore.
Sweet old man though. Everyone loved him.

The Secrets to Finding a Financial Advisor
 1. How often do they meet with their clients?
It is important to know how often your financial advisor expects to meet with you. As your personal situation changes you want to ensure that they are willing to meet frequently enough to be able to update your investment portfolio in response to those changes. Advisors will meet with their clients at varying frequencies. If you are planning to meet with your advisor once a year and something were to come up that you thought was important to discuss with them; would they make themselves available to meet with you? You want your advisor to always be working with current information and have full knowledge of your situation at any given time. If your situation does change then it is important to communicate this with your financial advisor.
2. Ask if you can see a sample of a financial plan that they have previously prepared for a client.
It is important that you are comfortable with the information that your advisor will provide to you, and that it is furnished in a comprehensive and usable manner. They may not have a sample available, but they would be able to access one that they had fashioned previously for a client, and be able to share it with you by removing all of the client specific information prior to you viewing it. This will help you to understand how they work to help their clients to reach their goals. It will also allow you to see how they track and measure their results, and determine if those results are in line with clients' goals. Also, if they can demonstrate how they help with the planning process, it will let you know that they actually do financial "planning", and not just investing.
3. Ask how the advisor is compensated and how that translates into any costs for you.
There are only a few different ways for advisors to be compensated. The first and most common method is for an advisor to receive a commission in return for their services. A second, newer form of compensation has advisors being paid a fee on a percentage of the client's total assets under management. This fee is charged to the client on an annual basis and is usually somewhere between 1% and 2.5%. This is also more common on some of the stock portfolios that are discretionarily managed. Some advisors believe that this will become the standard for compensation in the future. Most financial institutions offer the same amount of compensation, but there are cases in which some companies will compensate more than others, introducing a possible conflict of interest. It is important to understand how your financial advisor is compensated, so that you will be aware of any suggestions that they make, which may be in their best interests instead of your own. It is also very important for them to know how to speak freely with you about how they are being compensated. The third method of compensation is for an advisor to be paid up front on the investment purchases. This is typically calculated on a percentage basis as well, but is usually a higher percentage, approximately 3% to 5% as a onetime fee. The final method of compensation is a mix of any of the above. Depending on the advisor they may be transitioning between different structures or they may alter the structures depending on your situation. If you have some shorter term money that is being invested, then the commission from the fund company on that purchase will not be the best way to invest that money. They may choose to invest it with the front end fee to prevent a higher cost to you. In any case, you will want to be aware, before entering into this relationship, if and how, any of the above methods will translate into costs for you. For example, will there be a cost for transferring your assets from another advisor? Most advisors will cover the costs incurred during the transfer.
4. Does your advisor have a Certified Financial Planner Designation?
The certified financial planner (CFP) designation is well recognized across Canada. It affirms that your financial planner has taken the complex course on financial planning. More importantly, it ensures that they have been able to demonstrate through success on a test, encompassing a variety of areas, that they understand financial planning, and can apply this knowledge to many different applications. These areas include many aspects of investing, retirement planning, insurance and tax. It shows that your advisor has a broader and higher level of understanding than the average financial advisor.
5. What designations do they have that relate to your situation?
A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) should spend the time to look at your whole situation and help with planning for the future, and for achieving your financial goals.
A Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) typically has more focus on stock picking. They are usually more focused on selecting the investments that go into your portfolio and looking at the analytical side of those investments. They are a better fit if you are looking for someone to recommend certain stocks that they feel are hot. A CFA will usually have less frequent meetings and be more likely to pick up the phone and make a call to recommend purchasing or selling a specific stock.
A Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) has more insurance knowledge and will usually provide more insurance solutions to help you in reaching your goals. They are very good at providing techniques to preserve an estate and passing assets on to beneficiaries. A CLU will generally meet with their clients once a year to review their insurance picture. They will be less involved with investment planning.
All of these designations are well recognized across Canada and each one brings a unique focus on your situation. Your financial needs and the type of relationship you wish to have with your advisor, will help you to determine the necessary credentials for your advisor.
6. Have they done any extra courses and for what reasons?
Ask your prospective advisor why they have done their extra courses and how that pertains to your personal situation. If an advisor has taken a course with a financial focus, that also deals with seniors, you should ask why they have taken this course. What benefits did they achieve? It is fairly easy to take a number of courses and get several new designations. But it is really interesting when you ask the advisor why they took a certain course, and how they perceive that it will add to the services offered to their clients.
7. Who will be meeting with you?
In future meetings will you be meeting with the financial advisor, or with their assistant? It is your personal preference whether or not you wish to meet with someone other than the financial advisor. But, if you want that personal attention and expertise, and you want to work with only one individual, then it is good to know who that person will be, today and in the future.
8. Are you the ideal client for the advisor?
Are your financial needs similar to many of their clients? What can they show you that indicates a specialization in your area and that they have other clients in your situation? Has the advisor created any marketing pieces that are client friendly for those clients in your situation, over and above what they offer other clients? Do they really understand your situation? Once you have explained your personal needs and the type of client you are, it should be easy to determine if you are an ideal client for the services they provide.
9. How many clients do they work with?
It is important to know how many clients your prospective advisor works with. Are you one of 100 clients or one of 1000? Based on your assets are you in the top 15%, or the bottom 15% of their clients? These are important things to know. Ask if you are one of their top clients or one of their bottom clients, if will you receive more attention or less attention?
10. Do they have a network of professionals that they trust and can refer you to when you have a need?
It is valuable for an advisor to have a strong network of professional individuals available to their clients, in which they have full trust. Your advisor should know and trust these individuals completely, so that if an issue arises with them, your advisor will be able to go to bat for you.
11. Ask the financial advisor for a list of clients that you can contact.
Are there any clients that have given testimonials and who would be willing to speak to you about the advisor and the services provided? Ask these individuals how they enjoy working with the advisor and their staff. Ask some of the questions that you have asked the advisor, such as, Who do they meet with when they have their meetings, the advisor or an assistant?
12. How does the financial advisor contribute to the community?
Whether or not this is important to you, it is a good question to ask. You will discover if the advisor has given back to the community and if they are doing things over and above the day-to-day job to give back and help others.
13. How do they feel they will best help you and support you in achieving your goals?
This may be a question that you want to ask the advisor in a second meeting, if you have a two meeting process. Ask: How can they bring value to the relationship? What do they feel they can help you with? What will they do to ensure that you achieve your goals?
14. Do they have any tools that they have developed specifically for their clients?
I have touched on this earlier as well. This is really where you can see if a financial advisor is pro-active and if they specialize in a specific area or a specific type of client. An advisor who is pro-active should be creating some tools or have some processes in place to support their clients in their target market. Some of the tools will be used behind the scenes, but should be able to be explained to you, and provided to you during your relationship, to help you achieve your goals and keep you on track.

A study in kissing.
One.
Hel is sitting at the table, head propped against her arm as she studies the charts for the sector. Somehow, on top of all the things she normally does, the human is trusted with planning the most optimal route, and she oddly finds it enjoyable. Being able to align as many promising destinations as possible in one go so that they visit the most places and accomplish the most tasks is exhilarating. Yet the woman is also tired. Thus, her focus is half-drifting. That is why she doesn’t notice when he walks in, sits beside her and starts talking, asking questions about the ongoing assignment. He tries to get her attention again. And again, frustrated that she doesn’t respond, and starts leaning in, hoping to find answers over her shoulder. What he discovers instead is her face, however. Adask is forced to admit the simple fact that he cannot merely pull away now. Since he is close to her ear, he tries her name again, this time quieter, tone - altered. And, ultimately, react she does for his breath tingles against her neck. She finally notices, turning slightly. Abruptly. The realisation that he is too close for comfort hits. This causes her to stare at him rather coldly. Also results in some additional frowning for good measure. He determines to linger further. Meanwhile, she is not moving in return, inspecting and waiting. He definitely pushes for a kiss. And she dodges at the last moment. And gets up with surprising grace, not forgetting to grab the charts. Watching as he almost falls over, unable to predict her action. There is no pleasure in his dismay, however, so she decides to leave hastily, recognising as she departs the familiar thud of his forehead landing against the table surface.
Two.
Their laughter is becoming obnoxiously loud, even for a crowded transport hub bar, as Helena is doing her best to pronounce the alien girl’s name. It doesn’t resemble at all any word she knows - a powerfully distinct mixture of sounds, most of which are hard to emulate. And she does have a talent for imitating. But Hel doesn’t give up - for each attempt, she is compensated with cackling very peculiar and mesmerising. Her company’s laughter vaguely resembles the honking of Terran geese every now and then, and the human woman finds that incredibly alluring and intriguing. What other sorts of noises is this one capable of? Helena’s endeavours and mimicking the other’s name lead to miscellaneous fun discussions and comical misunderstandings that provide amusement. Eventually, it takes both of them to another place entirely after the gleeful meeting of eyes ( multiple in the case of the alien girl ) and a series of consenting nods. There, Hel discovers another sort of pleasure in the movement of her lips against that of her current company. It’s not about the feeling of skin on skin for her, but more of the art. The skill of kissing. The mechanical movement. When she takes on the challenge of figuring out what will bring the most satisfaction to the other. Setting a clear goal of eliciting a wide spectrum of entertaining sounds while narrowly avoiding the damage sharp alien teeth could cause to her own tissue. Somewhere among the myriad of expertly planted kisses, she finally whispers her name correctly. And is very much rewarded for this.
Three.
They end up alone together, again, when everybody else goes planetside to engage in the simple joys of shopping. It has never brought Hel any particular satisfaction unless there was a set goal. If she were to need to purchase a utility, she would have gone. Exploring a busy market could’ve brought some benefits, but Helena figured it would tire her out more. Also, she has an assortment of reading material that has piled up. So does Vur, and they find themselves engaging in the activity side by side. After a while, however, she notices something has changed. Usually, Vur would sit very still without moving. But she realises, in retrospect, that he has shifted. And is staring at her methodically, blinking with both sets of his eyelids. Flop-flop. As soon as she finishes the logical section, Hel grants him the attention he apparently seeks, wondering how long he’d been waiting for her so patiently. She utters a standard question: what is the matter? And he, in return, inquires about the human kissing practices. She is slightly startled since she’s assured he’d been in extensive communication with her kind before and must have asked around. She argues she’s not the best person for the request due to her specific views and experiences, and he makes a good point that, for him, there lies her definite value. She doesn’t protest too hard before she begins sharing her insights. At a point during the conversation, she is aware of his eyes shifting to her mouth pointedly and then back to meet her gaze. It happens a few times at precise intervals. She stops talking and tilts her head at him in sheer amusement. He asks if they could practice, and she agrees immediately. All in all, it is time well spent in a session that grants more fun than expected. They share techniques and stories, appreciating interesting discoveries pertaining to similarities in their kissing interactions. Hel is surprised to learn that his species mostly use their tongues, and that’s it, even though they do have lips. One would think that his version of kissing would be gross, and, in a way, it is, but it’s still the entertaining type somehow. When everyone returns and the two pull apart, she realises that she is actually very grateful. Not only due to the knowledge she acquired but simply because Vur did something nobody ever did: he thought to ask her.

Corporate Lawyers for a Variety of Negotiations
Tumblr media
A business lawyer is an attorney who specializes in business law. Business lawyers are experts at handling disputes between small businesses and large corporations as well as between employees of small companies and large corporations. These lawyers have access to legal research and documents that are often needed in court cases. It is important for them to know all the laws pertaining to their area of expertise. They must also be able to negotiate with management and owners about such things as workers compensation, intellectual property rights, and taxation. Find out more details in relation to this topic here: https://www.venerable.law/what-we-do/.
Some areas of business law include: contract law, commercial law, and government regulation. In some instances, business lawyers may work with clients who have business disputes that involve other entities, such as franchisees. In franchise agreements, business lawyers help franchisees comply with requirements and regulations regarding licensing, leases, and sales. The agreements may affect workers, franchisees, consumers, and investors.
Prior to hiring a business lawyer, you must ensure that they have the right experience and knowledge for the position. Before interviewing potential business attorneys, request letters of recommendations, which can be obtained from the bar association, or through the Internet. Meet with potential candidates for a face-to-face interview. Your goal is to hire someone that will not only be a good fit for your company, but one that you can communicate easily with.
It is important that business lawyers have experience dealing with different types of contracts. All contracts require different types of negotiations. For instance, most employment contracts, whether on behalf of an individual or a company, include non-compete provisions. Non-compete clauses restrict an employee's ability to pursue certain jobs within a company, as well as the type of access he or she will have to company secrets. The laws governing these clauses vary from state to state, and business lawyers must be aware of the different areas of the law in which they must evaluate and craft the best agreements for their clients.
Another area of contract expertise that a business lawyer can offer is in the realm of mergers and acquisitions and mergers and divestitures. In a merger or acquisition, there is often concern about an individual's ability to market a business to current and potential customers. A merger and acquisition attorney can help the buyer or purchaser to work with a business broker to sign purchase agreements that prevent competitors from selling the acquired company to other companies, as well as requiring that any employees of the acquired company be given job security. Additionally, the attorney may be called upon to help the buyer or purchaser negotiate any tax issues associated with the sale, such as determining if the purchase price is reasonable based on a variety of factors, read more to get enlightened.
Divestiture is also a common practice in business, and corporate lawyers are usually called upon to review any potential divestiture agreements. Similar to acquisitions, there are many different areas of tax and business law that a corporate lawyer can help a client to navigate. Divestiture involves the sale of a company's stock. Like acquisitions, the lawyer must analyze the financial records of any potential seller in order to determine whether there is a valid business reason for the sale and whether the price being offered is fair and justifiable.

Importance of Corporate Governance
Corporate Governance
Corporate governance is a concept of rules, relationships, and practices that determine an organisation's direction and control (Nordberg 2010). It enables the business to be more successful through better decision making. Good corporate governance is committed to protecting the interests of all segments of society, and corporate governance primarily involves balancing the company's stakeholders such as senior management executives, shareholders, customers, suppliers, financiers, the government, and the community. Furthermore, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has defined Corporate Governance as a system by which business corporations are controlled and directed. Therefore, a good system can create overall market confidence enhancing its efficiency, which will ensure that all financial stakeholders receive their share from the companies' earnings and assets, ultimately to the nations' overall wealth and welfare.
Tumblr media
The design of Corporate governance is between directors, management, shareholders, and stakeholders. The board of directors of a company is directly accountable for its governance, which means the companies are regulated by the board of directors or top management. Some other obligations of the board of directors are establishing the company's aims and objectives, determining the approach to achieve the aims and objectives, and provide the leadership to place them into effect. (John & Kedia, 2006). Apart from the board of directors, the shareholder's corporate governance role is to assign the directors and satisfy their appropriate governance structure. The shareholders are the owners of the company.
Two types of mechanisms are generally used in corporate governance, namely, internal and external mechanisms. The internal mechanism consists of Ownership structure, the board of directors, executive compensation, and disclosure, which directly affects the organisation's wealth. The external mechanism helps in improving the governance of a corporation indirectly. Those are the market for corporate control, legal framework, and the competition.
Objectives - To establish good corporate governance, it should possess some primary objectives like maintaining the balance between social and economic goals, holding efficient management in the business organisation, developing a better working environment, and ensuring business growth and development. (Bizfluent 2019)
Corporate governance is required to separate ownership from the management to gain global capital to protect investors' interests, achieve foreign investments, and obtain financial assistance from banks or financial institutions. Moreover, to globalize the economy (Dzingai & Fakoya 2017).
Tumblr media
Corporate governance's vision is to apply the core principles; accountability, fairness, transparency, trusteeship, eco supportiveness, employees' welfare, and integrity, which will usually outshine other companies and attract investors, stakeholders, and even shareholders who can support finance and further growth(Escuder & Tinoco 2007).
Poor corporate governance - Organisations that do not maintain sufficient affairs with auditors or do not select auditors within a required parameter will publish incomplete business reports or financial documents. Poorly structured management makes it too difficult for shareholders to eliminate unwanted occupants or stakeholders (Investopedia 2020).
Good corporate governance - The key feature of good corporate governance is transparency. It will ensure equal respect to all shareholders, making a non-partisan environment that can be achieved by holding Annual general meetings(AGM) to provide information on organisations' performance, opportunities, outlook, and risks. (Larcker & Tayan (2019).
Accountability is the obligation to explain, justify, and take responsibility, and it should be maintained towards both shareholders and society. This can be applied while listening to the shareholders' complaints and grievances, resolving, and rewarding them. Corporate governance can be implemented towards society by providing contributions, donations, charity, and assistance on different social requirements.
Tumblr media
Corporates are the trustee of the shareholder and their money. Therefore, a strong trusteeship should be maintained in order to establish good corporate governance.
Employee welfare is an essential principle concern with companies' human resources. This can be improved by identifying and rewarding employee performance, holding workshops to upgrade employees' skills, and launching a fund system for the employees.
The environment's protection should concern each socially responsible organisation by minimising waste generation and maintaining the ecological balance. Also, the resources must be sustainably used while establishing a safe working environment. (Investopedia 2020)
 Importance of corporate governance
Corporate governance's primary importance is that it enables management to make better decisions for its proper functioning with a limited legal framework. This will link the organisation management system with its financial system. Thereby it improves the growth of the organisation and future economy (Utami & Sutejo 2018). Corporate governance also supports investors by making the growth of the organisation transparent. This also improves efficiency and the effectiveness of the organisation, which will result in more gain. As a result, it will improve the international image of the organisation in the corporate world.
Some main elements of corporate governance
Roles and the power of the board - Good corporate governance is composed of different elements. One such element is the roles and powers of the board. The board's designed role and powers will strengthen the accountability mechanism and lead to achieve organisational goals. Therefore, to have good governance, there must be a clear identification of the board's rules and responsibilities, chairman of the board, and the CEO.
Legislation - One of the fundamental elements of corporate governance is clear legislation and regulations that will again ensure the organisation's effectiveness.
Management  environment - A management environment is another crucial element that will set up an organisation's framework and maintain better functioning processes.
Risk management - Risk is a component of business functioning and governance that should be taken into consideration. Identifying, analyzing, and tackling risks will slow down the organisation's effectiveness. Therefore, there must be a risk management plan throughout the active duration of the organisation.
Tumblr media
Various theories of corporate governance
Some of the various theories that explain corporate governance principles are the agency theory, the stakeholder theory, and the stewardship theory (Nicholson & Kiel 2003).
Agency theory - According to this, there is an agency relationship between the shareholders and the organisation's management. Here the principal party appoints another party (agent) to perform some functions on its behalf. In actuality, be that as it may, directorate and CEOs may advance their advantages instead of investors' interests. As such, there can be a uniqueness of interests among investors and administrators. A robust administration framework is required, in this way, to shield the interests of investors. (Yusoff & Alhaji 2012)
Agency theory presents a tight perspective on corporate governance as it proposes that an organisation is capable just to its shareholders. It does not consider the interests and privileges of different stakeholders like workers, customers, creditors, government, and distributors (Tricker 2015).
Stewardship theory - This concept depends on the presumption that an organisation's management will follow up on their own as capable stewards of the advantages under their influence. They continuously work to accomplish significant levels of income, which yield tremendous benefits to the shareholders.
The stewardship concept depends on the suspicion that directors will consistently work for the corporate's performance and utilise such performance in shareholders' interests. This may not generally remain constant. Besides, this concept oversees the interests of stakeholders than shareholders (Yusoff & Alhaji, 2012).
Stakeholder Theory - This concept recommends that an organisation must be run with concern for all the stakeholders. The interests of stakeholders are various and may frequently be confounding. So, a compromise or harmony is required between them. A top managerial staff comprising of the agents of different Stakeholder gatherings could be authorized with this duty.
The stakeholder concept observes the shareholder's powers as far as other stakeholders. However, the board of directors may not always be able to maintain fairness. It is likely to tension the interests of some stakeholders and underemphasizes those of other stakeholders. It is troublesome, and a good governance system is required for this task (Yusoff & Alhaji 2012).
Tumblr media
 Challenges
Recently, COVID- 19 has created an enormous impact on governance in companies all around the world. Corporate governance becomes even more critical in the current situation of the pandemic. The company needs to realize that they are quite bad at risk-management. We were unprepared for the pandemic. So, what is the relationship of this to corporate governance? We need to change our thinking pattern and start by identifying the risks that the company is facing. This crisis shows once again that it is time to transform the way we do business. Therefore, the Boards' priority is to review the business model and think in new ways about risk management and resilience.
Challenges and problems that corporate governance facing at different levels
In an organisation, the challenging aspects can be divided into two different levels, which are individual and group level. Lack of accountability, indifferent attitudes, communication barriers are some of the individual levels' challenges, lack of coordination, lack of adequate resources, and lack of rationality in decision making are some of the challenges that an organisation faces at the group level (Zalewska, 2014).
Tumblr media
Summery
Corporate governance is a concept of rules, relationships, and practices that determines an organisation's operations, controlled within a legal frame, and managed efficiently. Corporate governance is mainly based on essential principles like transparency, accountability, fairness, trusteeship, eco supportiveness, employees' welfare, and integrity, making the foundation for an organisation's good management system. Poor corporate governance can lead to financial losses, collapsed social networks, and, finally, results in an organisation's deterioration. *part 7 is out, check Masterlist*
You eye him while he takes his seat again and notice that the food was left exactly how it was before you threw your little fit. You get rid of that memory and aim for more basic and calm conversation in order to make up for whatever you two fought off.
“So… what is this?” you point to a plate which looked delicious.
“It's a rolled pastry with beef, vegetables, some you don’t know because they're Asgardian and cheese?” his eyebrows furrow at his explanation. “It sounds terribly normal but I have to keep it simple for your Midgardian tastes.”
“I'm fine with everything honestly. And I would like to know more about this one,” you take a bite of the roll and your eyes widen. “It's so goooood,” you throw your head back and Loki can't help but smile shortly at your overreaction.
“Ok, I would actually like to know about everything here,” your eyes scan the table and a hint of pride can be seen in Loki's glimpse. He feels pleased with your own satisfaction.
“There will be enough time.”
You look at him and can't help but feel content at his remark. This has to mean something, he wouldn't keep you with him just to toy with you, right?
“I recommend this,” his golden magic shoves a plate in front of you and you smile.
“It's beautiful.”
“The dish? Well, I wouldn't call it beautif…”
“Your magic.”
He raises an eyebrow and you cough.
“I mean, the colours and the way it works. Better than that blue thingy you have on your scepter.”
The Tesseract? Have you just assumed his magic is better than a cosmic box combined with an Infinity Stone? He shakes his head in amusement at your statement and continues eating his food. Sure, he worked intensely on developing his magic skills while he was “dead” and he reached a point where he can be called one of the best sorcerers in the nine realms, yet he also analyzed the Space Stone and he indeed grasped a better hold on its power. He took his time giving the fact that he was hidden from everyone over the assumption of being dead, but, even if he still needs time to comprehend them, he wanted to show off his new powers. And what wouldn't be a better target than the planet he almost owned and the race that caused his mother to sacrifice herself?
His hatred is paused by another satisfied sound escaping on your lips when you bring a piece of cake in your mouth.
“What did I tell you about…”
“I am sorry but I usually don't eat a lot. And since I wanted this cake so much I should refrain from eating much of a meal before it. You know, counting calories and macros, I bet you don't worry about getting weight and so on. Trivial things for a God right?”
“My strength requires a lot of replenishment.”
“Obviously,” you take another bite.
“I would much prefer you to be as replenished as I am than starving for such an idiotic human goal.”
You roll your eyes and take a bite from another cake.
“You know Loki, life on Earth is really hard. I mean, you underestimate the hardships a Midgardian goes through.”
“Is this why you hurt yourself?” he asks and you stop your fork from getting another piece of cake.
You're afraid to reach this subject with anyone, moreover with the God of Mischief.
“Let's make a deal,” his voice interrupts your thoughts but you still don't raise your head to meet his eyes, “You answer a question I ask and I will also answer one of yours.”
You finally look up at him and chew on your lip.
“I assure you that I can get all the information I need with only a touch, so you should be thankful that I am feeling a little bit… generous today.”
“Ok…” your fingers are starting to fiddle with the fabric of your robe and wait for him to start.
“Why did you self-harm?” the question sucks all the air from your chest and you gulp.
“Life,” the word barely escaped from your lips with a choke.
“You're testing my patience.”
“I'm sorry…” you whisper.
“What exactly in your life made you do that?”
Silence.
“Well, I did warn you,” his body vanishes and by the next second your back meets his chest, one hand wraps around your stomach and the other one sticks to your forehead. You feel a weird pressure trying to get in your head and you lean on Loki's shoulder when your memories start to project in your mind. From high school when comments about your appearance made you starve yourself, to college when you felt useless, stupid and hopeless, to your boring work life. The times your heart broke because of failed relationships, the times you felt your existence a failure to your parents and friends. Nights you barely slept, anxiety attacks, moments you let your blood flood the sink, scenarios on how you could just end your life… he watched everything. You pant when the memories stop and struggle to get away from his grasp.
“No…” a muffled sound meets his neck and he does something you both get surprised of: he hugs you tightly, warmness from his body taking over your, making you totally give in.
“Stop,” his voice is stern and you do as you're told. “I would have done it anyway, sooner or later.”
You lay in his hold absent-minded, realizing that he knows everything now. You are ashamed, embarrassed, you never told anyone details about your depression.
“I am… not exactly proud that I invaded your privacy in this forceful way and pained you by reminding of those…”
“You mean that you're sorry?” you would have laughed at his attempt to avoid this word if you weren't in the given situation.
“I do…” there's a long break and then a soft whisper, “Apologize.”
He would have never said that to a mere mortal. But he can almost feel all your misery radiating through your delicate frame. He now concluded how easily to break you are, not just physically but also mentally. There was a slight panic in his chest when he blood on your skin. He now has second thoughts on this whole matter. At first, he didn't mind breaking you, wrecking you, that was his plan, but now it’s different. Why? He keeps questioning his actions. Why? You're messing his plans, his… crave for power and domination.
“Well…” you shift awkwardly.
He clears his throat and let's go of you, even if the absence of your touch makes him sigh.
“I guess this didn't work as I wanted,” you sit back in your chair and drink a glass of wine to bear with another awkward exchange.
“Let's say I would prefer you not to drink a lot, it doesn't seem like you can handle alcohol,” his hand pushes the glass away. “I will answer some of your questions if you behave.”
You look at him standing to your left and search his eyes. God, how can someone have such a beautiful pair of eyes? The blue irises are like an unknown yet mysterious place that fascinates you, wishing you would never stop falling into their profoundness even if you know it’s dangerous.
“You're staring.”
“Oh, yes,” you break the eye contact. “So, we're in Asgard.”
He nods.
Great. You've been drifted to another realm, though it sounds tempting to explore.
“Probably somewhere pretty far from the palace you're supposed to be at.”
He nods again and sits on the chair near you, prepared for more nonverbal replies.
“What happened to you after the…” you pause, “Avengers crash and so on?”
“Nothing special. Imprisoned and then,” he takes his time to think the answer, “Freed by the oaf of my brother.”
“And what have you been up to?”
“Studying magic and getting stronger.”
“For?”
Good question. He wanted to attack Earth again, revenge his mother’s death but now everything seemed stupid in your company. But why? You are nothing but a mortal, as Thor's lover is. He somehow understands why his brother was so protective of Jane when the dark elves approached. But his mother… Did she also feel as Thor felt? As he still feels now? When she sacrificed herself for a mortal? Was it for Thor's happiness?
Of course, the mighty real son of Odin and Frigga.
No.
He wants to hit himself for a moment that he actually assumed his mother didn't care as much for him as she did for Thor. She was the only one, the only person in his life who truly loved him.
“You…” he snaps.
“For me?” your face contorts in bewilderment.
“No. What's it with you? Is this a trick? Are you sent by one of my enemies? By Father?” he jolts, hitting the chair on the floor and you yelp. “Tell me,” he grabs your chin threateningly.
“Loki… you took me here.”
“Yes, yes I did! Because there is something about you, something that attracts me. Did he cast some spell on you?”
“Loki please, calm down.”
“Calm down?! You dare to inflict me with your affection? Affection? For whom? For what reason?” he’s screaming now and you're shaking at his outburst.
“I'm…” your lip quivers but no words are coming out.
“You're what?” his fist pounds the table.
“Understanding you,” you finally manage to respond, making him frown.
“I know how you feel. You're misunderstood because of your actions. But those actions were simply a reflection of the pain you're going through.”
He laughs ironically, “Understand me? You?”
“I was in New York when you fought with the Avengers. And I saw… your eyes. It was for a couple of seconds while Thor evacuated the building. And I just… felt it… knew it from your eyes.”
“You're completely stupid.”
“Meeting you twice… I will not call it destiny, merely a chance to…”
“To?” his tone is low.
“Know your true self. I know it sounds crazy, who do I think I am? You're a God, I'm a very non-significant human, more non-significant as usual people are. I don't know, to be honest, I am also clueless about my actions towards you. They're just led by… my inexplicable feelings.”
“Feelings?” a strangled sound comes from his throat. “For someone who almost killed you? For a monster like me?” his pale skin changes to blue and the ocean you adore becomes crimson.
So that's how a Frost Giant looks. Nobody from Earth seems to be aware of Loki’s true identity except you. When you were hiding under an office for safety while Thor was fighting Loki, you overheard the small conversation between them, including Loki stating that he's a Frost Giant, a species which they both hated. Your eyes follow the lighter blue stripes on his face and can't help to trace them with your fingers.
Loki's eyes widen and for a moment he leans in to feel your touch but hastily grabs your wrists to stop you.
“I will freeze you.”
You chuckle. “In case you haven't observed, my body’s temperature is literally 15 Celsius degrees.”
He is not amused by your joke and your lips tighten.
“Ok… it was not appropriate for this mome…” your words stop when Loki's hands wrap around your waist and his head rest on your stomach, his Frost Giant form gradually disappears. Unsure about how your movements could push him away, you hesitantly bury your fingers into his hair and gently play with his long black curls.
Your scent is taunting him, you feel like… a place where he'll always be welcomed back whatever happens, a place that waits for him, longs for him... You feel like home.
“You are not to discuss about this moment,” his voice is muffled in your embrace and you smile.
“Of course I am not,” you roll your eyes. “What will happen to your enormously evil reputation if words are out about cuddling with such a weak Midgardian?” you massage his scalp and he hums in approval.
“Can you show me around?” you mumble while you're still stroking his hair.
“Why would you give up your life to accompany someone like me?” he ignores your question and you take some minutes to finally respond.
“Because I have pretty weird standards as you might have already noticed.”
“Indeed,” he agrees and lets go of you. His hand tangles in your hair and pushes your lips onto his, gently tugging on your lower one. His hands travel to your thighs, your muscles tense at his touch. He grabs and wraps them around his waist, jolting you up on the table. Your arms tug his leather blouse, while the kiss is getting sloppy, slow, as if he has to retrace a lost map. His tongue is looking for yours which gladly joins his dance for dominance. You thought this kiss will steal your soul, you have never been kissed like this before, needy but in the same time steady, passionate. His fingers brush your back and you shiver in his arms, moment which he breaks the kiss.
“It's not entirely safe to do so… but take a quick shower and I will show you around,” he grazes his fingers on your right thigh. “A quick one.”
You nod and storm for the bathroom while Loki grins stupidly at your excitement.
What did I get into?
After what lasted like 10 minutes you return to the dining room where Loki sits on the couch, reading a book.
“What are these clothes Loki? Renaissance times much?”
“Those are Asgardian clothes.” He takes a glimpse at your figure and his gaze drops on your revealing shoulders marked by his bites. You squirm uncomfortably under his stare and he stands up.
“You would have to stay near me and don't touch anything or speak to anyone, understood?”
You nod as he grabs your waist and your body feels weightless for some seconds before a weird sensation hits you and you hold onto his shoulders strongly. Your eyes shut close and your breath stops while his arms are now rubbing your back.
“We’re here,” he states and your legs go jelly but he holds you in place. “Breathe.”
He has just teleported the both of you in an Asgardian square but your body is not adjusting really well to his magic.
“I might throw up,” you gasp but a sudden warmth envelops your chest and you instantly feel better.
Did he just use his magic to make me feel better? Oh God, I'm starting to like him more than I already do.
“This is an Asgardian square, though it is not as fancy as it is in the center. We’re in a very reserved place in the mountains.”
You glance at him and gape at his changed appearance.
He rolls his eyes at your reaction, “I cannot be seen here, especially with someone like you.”
His features could be still seen slightly due to his blue haunting eyes which remained the same but he now he has shorter curly copper hair and a beard. His face is less visible from the black leather hood he wears.
“So are we shopping?” you smile widely while you take in the surroundings.
He grabs your hand and drags you back, almost sticking your body to his.
“There are some people here who can feel if someone is not Asgardian.”
“Are they dangerous?”
“They might be. My magic is covering your smell but I would prefer you close.”
You ignore his death stare and return your attention to the blue decorated stands with different objects. The sellers are wearing simple brown and beige clothes. You wouldn't know that they're Asgardians if you weren't on another planet.
“I actually do need some things like make-up? Skincare products? Comfy clothes?”
“I much prefer you naked, body and face.”
You roll his eyes and he tilts his head.
“Did you just…?”
“So if you can transport things,” you interrupt him, “Can't you like have a short trip to Earth and steal a Chanel make-up stand? Or a…”
“I beg your pardon?”
“I was just trying. I mean… since you would do this, at least let it be something expensive.”
“Choose whatever you want from here.”
“Loki… I have no idea what these are… what language is this?”
“Give her whatever she needs.” his gaze fixes the seller and a green glow flashes in her eyes.
“Of course, your majesty.”
Did he just cast a spell on her? Her mind-controlled gaze fixes on your face as she studies it. She quickly packs a few bottles in a box and she handles it to Loki.
“Let's leave.”
“Well if you can steal from a merchant in the square I assume you can do the same to a whole line of cosmetics which probably gains 100.000 times more than this woman.”
“Your tone pet, you better lower it and stop complaining,” he groans and grabs your waist to crash your body into his. For a moment you thought he would kiss you but it appears he’s sensing something and checks his surroundings from the underneath of his hood.
“Loki?”
“We’re getting out of here, now!”

One of the leading reasons for employees not performing to the best of their abilities is the lack of feeling engaged. And this seemingly small thing is what you as an employer needs to get rid of. If you cannot get rid of it completely, you must at least try to reduce it to a large extent. Apart from performance, disengaged employees can also impact other employees or extreme cases, decide to leave the organization.
What is Employee Engagement?
Understanding Workplace Demographics
Top #12 Employee Engagement Trends for 2020
Should organizations feel that their employees are not highly engaged, the problem can be addressed by certain employee engagement practices. Following some of these will help you address the issue of employee engagement. And if done properly, it can boost the satisfaction of employees, reduce the attrition rate and improve employee retention, boost the productivity of employees, increase the loyalty in employees, etc.
What is Employee Engagement?
Employee engagement is the emotional connect that an employee has with their organization. Having an emotional connection means that they actually care for the organization, its goals, and its work. Proper employee engagement ensures that your employees do not just work for their paychecks, next hike, promotion, etc. They put in the effort because they understand the organization’s goals and work towards it.
While it is important to understand employee engagement, it is even more crucial to know what employee engagement isn’t. Employee engagement certainly isn’t the happiness of an employee. An employee could be happy but not work diligently towards an organization’s goals. To bridge this gap with your employees, you can partake in employee engagement activities. However, it is important to know employee engagement trends.
Being aware of employee engagement trends will help you better understand the issues and take precautionary steps. These employee engagement trends also ensure that you do not waste your energy on activities that no longer engage your employees.
Understanding Workplace Demographics
Before you can get down to identifying and resolving employee engagement related issues, knowing your company’s demographics is important as well. Going forward, it is expected that employees will stay longer at a workplace rather than constantly changing companies. There is a good possibility that you will have to handle employees from different generations at the same time.
Another factor that will become mainstream for the coming year is virtual workplaces and globalization. This will result in more flow of employees around. Adding to the mix is cultural diversity, which you will have to rethink completely to accommodate a wider set of values than they currently have. Collectively these make sure that the trends of previous years are no longer valid or need to be updated with time.
Top 13 Employee Engagement Trends for 2020
The employee engagement trends for 2020 seek to address upcoming technologies and how the workplace will get affected accordingly. Implementing a few of these will help you cope up with the changes while ensuring that your employees are well engaged.
1. Promote a healthy workplace for employees with wellness programs
There are a lot of things that are not in the right place when it comes to the wellness of employees in the workplace. Employees are usually exhausted due to stress at work or isolation from the social world. And it is no secret that employees who are worn out will always find themselves distant from engagement. Finding out a way to incorporate wellness at the workplace apart from the usual fitness classes and gym membership is an interesting challenge for employers.
An ideal way to handle this situation would be to take into consideration mental wellness, emotional wellness and if possible, even financial wellness, along with physical wellness. It is important to educate your employees about mental wellness and the support that they can get. A few employers are experimenting with sick leaves for mental well-being. Financial wellness is a concern that quite a few employees have. Apart from only providing with education, helping your employees in financially wise decisions can immensely help their engagement levels.

2. Provide opportunities for employees to grow and develop professionally
The presence of various resources these days makes it easy to help employees to learn and develop their skill set. Providing employees with the tool to help them be ready for future aids in employee engagement. Engaged employees usually have a strong affinity towards improving themselves and learning new things. Failing to offer them similar opportunities will lead to stagnation.
In fact, a survey done by LinkedIn shows that 44% of employees joined new employers for better personal advancement and development prospects. There are several on-demand learning portals or opportunities. Providing your employees with such exposure will help in employee engagement. Yes, there is a cost involved in the same. However, it is an investment that will pay off in terms of better reciprocation from your employees. Even more so when you consider that a company spends as much as 21% of an employees’ salary to find a replacement.
3. Letting Artificial Intelligence do the boring work
It is not mandatory for you as an organisation to embrace every bit of technology that is out there in the market. However, some of them can help you in the process of improving engagement among employees. On the mention of Artificial Intelligence, people usually think about losing jobs. That is not the case. As an organisation, you can incorporate AI to cover some of the most boring and redundant work. This will free up your employees to do more creative work and push their talent limits. Alternatively, they are less likely to get bored and demotivated, since they no longer have to do the boring stuff.
4. Appoint compassionate people as leaders for better health of your organization
Employees across the globe feel that the lack of good leadership in an organization is good enough reason for them to quit. Thus, hiring or promoting leaders who are compassionate and inspiring is one of the employee engagement trends for 2020. A leader who listens is authentic and leads by example has a much higher chance of imbibing your shift towards better engagement for employees.
Leaders or managers who show empathy towards their employees and have a sense of dignity when it comes to commitment are more likely to inspire employees. If your organization has such leaders, it is about time you recognize them and promote them with better responsibilities. Needless to say, the lack of such employees can have a negative impact as well.

5. Better employee experience makes way for more engaged employees
User experience has garnered a lot of attention in recent years and for good reasons. Customers and clients no longer just want a product but also expect a good user experience. According to an article in Forbes, if the cost of fixing an issue is $1 during the design phase, it is $10 during development and $100 once it is released.
We can use a similar thought process for employees as well. Surveys show that about 60% of candidates have a poor experience with companies. As an organization, you would need to put in efforts to enhance employee experience for better engagement. This goes beyond the usual benefits or compensation that you offer to your employees. Listening to your employees frequently via surveys will help you address this. You can get an insight into what the employees like and what they would like to see in the organization.
6. Understanding millennial’s holds key to long association with an organization
Millennials will constitute a vast majority of the workforce in the coming decade. It is only natural that you understand this demographic to make the most of it. A few years ago, companies felt the addition of games in office premises, monthly lunches, etc. were enough to keep millennials engaged. However, that’s not the case. While such instances are helpful, as an employer you should be able to offer them something more meaningful to keep them engaged for the long-term.
You might want to read: Hiring millenials in India
One of the factors that instantly attracts millennials towards organizations is flexibility. Whether it is working duration, office timings, working remotely, etc. These things provide them with a sense of belonging and it can fuel engagement as well. Another crucial factor that can help you get the attention of millennials is a good working culture. A culture that practices open-door policies for management, opportunities to collaborate with other teams is more likely to keep a millennial happy and engaged.

7. Frequent feedback aid in enhanced policies
A common mistake that most companies commit is to wait for the year-end appraisal meetings to give feedback. This feedback can be counterproductive. It gives employees a feeling that the feedback was only for year-end appraisal and might not even have an impact. Giving someone feedback merely takes a few minutes and if done during the year can be more effective.
The lack of a proper feedback channel or regular feedback can bring in a lot of discord and disconnect that the employees feel. Giving them feedback at the end of the year and associating it with monetary benefits leaves them feeling confused. Timely feedback will help your employees work on shortcomings and gaps. This also brings in a sense of belonging and keep them engaged with their profiles. This is one of the leading employee engagement trends for 2020. It will not happen overnight or over one or two instances. But you need to initiate it and ensure that it is followed consistently.
8. Use technology as a tool to improve engagement in employees
Knowingly or unknowingly we are surrounded by technology. The moment we set out of the home, till returning to bed we engage with technology at so many levels. As an organization, you can leverage technology for your benefit. Companies are now embracing the idea of online recognition tools for their employees. This seemingly simple idea helps employees appreciate each other and in turn, increases their engagement in the organization.
This allows employees to share their accomplishments, achievements and create a bond with other employees as well. The usage of good messaging apps also improves communication among employees. These apps allow employees to engage with each other and work collaboratively, irrespective of their location. When you assess engagement barriers in your organization, there are chances that it might be resolved with technology.
9. Improve employee’s productivity by striking a balance between work and life
Work-life balance has been on employee engagement trend for quite some time but never gets old. And there are strong reasons for the same. Offering employees, the flexibility to work at their convenience, at times even without coming to the office can boost the engagement levels to a great extent. Sticking to strict office timings might not be the most effective mode of working for several employees as well.
It is essential that as an organization you incorporate flexibility as and where possible so that employees are not burned out. Estimates show that burned out employee cost $125 billion to $190 billion a year in healthcare expenses. Once employees get a better sense of work-life balance they are more likely to be engaged and be more productive.
Good read: How to improve work life balance in your company?
10. Incorporate analytics for enhanced predictions and getting rid of bottlenecks
In a bid to make something for customers, employees use a lot of tools and thereby generate a lot of data. A rising employee engagement trend is to make use of the data generated by employees. Companies are coming up with tools to help HR understand certain fundamental issues and even help them resolve the same. The data at hand along with a good analytics tool can help you identify bottlenecks when it comes to employee engagement.
Whether it is instant polls, tools for collaboration, specialized data can help you analyze different aspects and work on them to improve employee engagement. You can even predict the future behaviour of employees using these tools. There are bound to be some noises with a huge amount of data at hand. The major challenge in all this is fine tuning the findings and to identify the actual issues.
11. Innovation via upcoming technologies
Companies are embracing newer technologies for more integrated products and experiences for their customers. One prime example is IoT or Internet of Things. The simple concept connects everyday objects with each other and lets them identify similar other objects as well. IoT is being used at various levels including, GPS or RFID for tracking and monitoring shipments, assets or even properties. Ability to rent vehicles remotely without any human intervention is another such example.
12. Incorporate a culture of recognition and rewards
This is one of the simpler and more common employee engagement trends for the coming year. Employee recognition acknowledges the efforts that employees put in openly, to inculcate a growth culture. If you do not already have a recognition and rewards system, it is about time that you start with one. And for companies that already have a system in place, it might be worthwhile revisiting them.
Recognizing and rewarding your employees is one of the most powerful ways of ensuring employee engagement. There are enough surveys and statistics to prove that employees that are recognized, are more likely to feel highly engaged. Organizations across the globe have seen better productivity, boosted morale, and a lower turnover of employees. However, the recognition program must be consistent and visible to others. While recognition and rewards are two different concepts altogether, clubbing them together can multiply the benefits. There are few reports which suggest that employees who receive rewards such as monetary benefits or redeemable points are more engaged than employees who receive bonus yearly once. In fact, the engagement level is pegged at a staggering 8 times.
Do read: Employee rewards and recognition
13. Inculcating a culture of diversity for a growth environment
Another important employee engagement trend comes in the form of diversity in the workplace. Companies that have diverse teams as well as inclusive teams, will find their employees to be more engaged. Diversity in this case predominantly refers to employees from different backgrounds. And inclusion refers to better employee experience at the workplace along with the environment that they have access to.
You can start by introducing bias-free practices in hiring of employees. Other practices include better parental leaves, equal pay among employees and even exposing employees to un-bias training sessions. It is important to inculcate these into the culture of your organization. Employees get a sense of equality, belonging, psychologically safe and most importantly engaged. Once your employees feel comfortable in the culture and environment that you have created, they can expressive, innovative and happier.
Must read: How to build an everlasting company culture?
In conclusion…
To sum it up, engaged employees are more likely to work towards the organizational goals than mere pay checks. Engaged employees are known to be more productive and increase the profitability of an organization. In fact, some reports even suggest that the chances of engaged employees not turning up for work. Engagement brings in a sense of belonging towards the company along with better employee loyalty also.
There are several surveys and tools which can help you identify the level of employee engagement in your organization. Once you identify that the next obvious step is to look for solutions. To fix any issues related to engagement is a bit more difficult than usual business-related problems. However, they can still be solved. You can take the help of the above employee engagement trends and implement techniques that work for your organization. With a bit of perseverance, initial costs and consistency, you will be able to increase the engagement among employees. And once you do, you can reap the benefits of all the efforts that you had to put in the first place.

“Little Lady” Part 5 [Percival Graves x Reader]
Word count: 2k
Warnings: None I can think of
Apology: It’s been almost a year since I wrote something so I’m trying to finish my unfinished projects at first. I’m sorry if you were reading this series and suddenly I wasn’t updating anymore.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
Tumblr media
Magical abilities and skills:
                  Auror Training- Completed
Non verbal magic- Registrated Level B2
                  Apparition Training- Completed
Magical characteristics:
Wand- 11", core: tail hair of a Thestral, material: cherry wood
                 Patrons- previously panther, currently facing
                 Bogart- unknown
After reading the file Percival was even more puzzled. There was nothing that he didn't already know, but he had hoped to get a clearer picture of what was going on. Just as his informator had told him Y/N had been an auror, just as her brother. She had arrested Grindelwald. Her brother had been sent to Azkaban and she had fought her free. She had been one of the many aurors who made it their personal goal to catch Gellert Grindelwald. Around the time Grindelwald disappeared from Europe, Y/N's brother was announced missing and Y/N gave up her job in the ministry. That was about all that was written there. Absolutely no news.
Percival decided to head home for the night, it was already past midnight. The next morning he decided to go and talk to Madame President about her. The more he thought about it the more he wanted to believe she was innocent.
***
The next morning Percival headed straight to Madame President's office. The problem of Y/N Y/L/N had kept him up all night. It all started making sense to him. That girl had lost her family or at least her brother to Grindelwald and was trying to do anything she could to bring him to justice. From what Percival had heard last night it seemed like Grindelwald had at one point captured her. That would also explain why she got scared so easily when Graves touched her shoulder unexpectedly. After all he had done it without a warning and from behind, so there was no way she had seen it coming. There were a lot of questions to be answered.
"She is alone," said Madame President's secretary when she saw Percival coming in.
"Thank you," he replied and walked into the President's office.
"Good morning Graves, on the rare occasion when I didn't have the need to see you in the morning you find your own way here," she said jokingly when she saw Percival.
"It is about Miss Y/N."
Madame President's face fell visibly. "It was an unfortunate event indeed."
"Madam, I was present almost every training she conducted with the new recruits. There was no harassment. Unless we'd count the way that Hallenby kid was acting harassment. "
"I know, I had no other choice than to arrest her for 24 hours, Mr. Hallenby filed a report on her. In these cases the least we can do is arrest the person for a day and conduct an investigation. I had 5 students write their statement in the event that had occurred and single-handedly decided that she is not to be blamed. Her arrest ends in," Madam Picquery looked at the clock on the wall," 37 minutes. Then she is free to go." She didn't look to pleased with the situation.
"And that is it? She should be getting a compensation for that night," Graves said with a furious undertone.
"Indeed, but that is her's to ask. Would you have time to go free her?" Madam Picquery asked.
"I will."
"Not earlier than in 36 minutes, thank you," the woman finished and handed Percival the same keys she had handed him last night.
***
These 36 minutes were the longest Percival can remember  any 36 minute period to have ever been. He was sitting in his office and preparing a form for Y/N. His mind was filled with questions. He wasn't sure if Y/N was in the right mindset to be asked about her past right after being stuck overnight in the company of the other inmates. When he had just 7 minutes until her release Graves decided to leave his office and head downstairs. As was bound to happen, he reached the corridor leading to the cells in a minute or two and had an extra 5 minutes now. He tried to open the lock as silently as he could and entered the corridor, he was greeted with a chilly badly lit part of the building. He stopped and tried to hear anything that the inmates were saying.
"Hmmm... more or less?" a man asked.
"Less," a woman answered.
"I went easy on a pretty thing like you," the same man answered.
"Sure," the same woman answered shortly.
"Oh come on answer me now," the man said almost flirtatiously.
"No, you can guess."
"Less than 50 but more than 25 hmm... 32!" the man guessed.
"No."
"45."
The woman didn't reply for a long time. "No."
"44."
"Almost"
"43?"
There was a long pause once again. "Yes."
"43 scars is not a lot, you should be more hostile with me!" the man flirted again.
"One day I'll decorate you with 43 scars and then we can debate over it," the woman replied coldly. Graves wasn't sure but it could have been Y/N.
"Y/N, Y/N, we had a good time together, no need to get mean," the man and his friends laughed. The conversation died cause Y/N stopped answering completely. Graves decided to finally go in. He walked to Y/N's cell and opened the door of it.
"Follow me," he said to Y/N. He did only get a glimpse of her but it seemed like she didn't look too good. She was curled up in the far right corner of the cell. She stood up and silently walked to the door. Graves locked the now empty cell after her and started leading her out from between the cells.
"We'll meet sooner than you think, doll!" the same man shouted after her.
When Graves and Y/N closed to corridor's door behind them and walked into the more lit part of the building, he finally looked at Y/N. The woman had dark circles around her eyes and her hair was messy. Otherwise she looked fine.
"You have to sign a few papers in my office, is that okay?" Graves asked looking at her.
"Yes," she answered and nodded lazily. The reached the elevator and the both of them reached to the button to call for it at the same time. Their hands touched for a brief second before Y/N quickly pulled her hand away. Graves noticed that her hand was very cold. The more he looked at her the more clear it became that the poor woman was freezing. She was shaking slightly and her lips had an almost blue touch to them. Without asking Percival took his jacket off and offered it to her.
"I'm fine, thank you," Y/N replied and looked down.
"You're clearly freezing. Who's gonna train the aurors if you get sick?" Percival said and was almost surprised by his own words, they sounded childish. The elevator arrived and opened it's doors.
"If I will get sick, then I will. I doubt your coat will undo the whole night," she replied and stepped into the elevator.
Graves couldn't argue with that, she did have a good point. That didn't mean that he didn't feel like he wanted to help her. They stood by each other in silence, Graves was awkwardly holding his jacket in his hands. When the elevator stopped Graves decided to put his jacket around Y/N shoulders anyway. He made sure she saw what he was doing (not like the last time) and placed the jacket on the woman's shoulders. It was stupidly big for her and made her seem even smaller than she was. In that moment the doors opened but neither of them moved for a brief second. Finally Graves gestured to Y/N  to stepped out first. As soon as they started heading to Percival's office, Y/N felt many pairs of eyes on her. Percival noticed that too but didn't give it too much thought. Once they reached the office Percival opened the door for her and told her to wait for a minute.
Y/N walked in and sat down on a wooden chair with a leather seat, identical to the one on the other side of the table. She let her eyes wander over the cabinet. It looked more like a fancy interrogation room. There were no pictures on the walls or on the desk, no plants, the room was depressingly dark and the light there was cold. Y/N took the jacket she had been given off and walked over to Percival's chair, she placed the jacket on the chair and took her seat again. Before she could investigate the decor more Graves was back.
He sat down on his seat and sighed. "Sign this, I'll fill the rest out myself," he said and handed Y/N the form. Y/N read through the paper fast, signed it and handed it back.
"You can write a complaint on Hallenby for all this," Graves said while filling out the rest of the paper.
"I'd rather not, it would give him even more reason to hate me," she replied.
" Are you sure?" Percival asked.
" Yes."
" Well here is the signed return permit for your wand," he took it from the  top drawer of his desk.
An awkward silence took over .
"When can I teach again?" Y/N asked and stood up.
"I doubt you want to do it today but tomorrow is fine, if it's fine by you."
"I won't cancel my today's class," she said and walked out. No one had ever walked out from Percival's office in the middle of the conversation before. He was both agitated and impressed.
***
Almost without having noticed Percival found himself walking into the training hall of the aurors when he knew the class was about to start. He went and sat down in the back of the room in his usual seat.
"I wonder if Miss Y/L/N will be here?" a girl who Percival thinks was in his office the day before asked from another girl.
"No idea," the girl replied.
"Of course she won't, she was thrown to jail! I hope we'll get a proper teacher finally!" David Hallenby, the spoiled kid, said.
"And I hoped I'd have normal students but I guess life is not what we expect or hope," Y/N who had entered the room without anyone noticing said, "today we'll go through the most common dirty moves when it comes to hand combat but first, run for 7 minutes."
The pupils stared running but Y/N walked to Percival instead. " Can you help me today?" she asked.
"In what way?" Percival asked back a bit surprised by the unusual warmness in her voice.
"I need to show them the moves but I don't want be accused of fighting with the students," she said matter-of-factly.
"Good idea," Percival said and followed Y/N to the middle part of the hall. He took of his jacket and vest, loosened his tie a bit, unbuttoned the upper button on his shirt and rolled up his sleeves.
"7 minutes is up!" Y/N shouted in a bit and everyone in the room gathered together.
"Today we have Mr. Graves taking part of our training class more physically than before. So before we start what were the most important things you learned last time? Let's go over them quickly..."
***
When the class ended and everyone had left the hall Y/N noticed that Percival was still in the room.
"Thank you for helping me out today," she smiled and told him.
"It was no problem," Graves replied.
"I didn't want to be completely alone in front of them today," she admitted.
"It is completely understandable," Percival replied and walked out of the door, Y/N followed him and locked the door after herself. Percival found himself thinking that she looked good even when she had been through so much in the last few days. " Can I walk you home?" Percival asked without even thinking.
"Thank you but there is no need for that, see you tomorrow," Y/N smiled and walked away. She left Percival standing in the hallway of MACUSA, wondering if any woman has ever declined that offer from him before.

When I graduated from college with my BA in Political Science there were a few things I thought I’d do: law school, working for a political campaign, interning at the Capitol. I graduated when the US was still recovering from their latest recession so job options and offers were few and far between. I watched friends struggle to land their dream jobs as performers and advocates and legislators. Then I watched myself make the very real decision that happiness for me was stability. I’m Type A. I like organization and being in control. A lot of my daily fulfillment comes in the form of immediate gratification. I just like to get stuff done and I like when I can “people please” while I’m at it. So quickly I made a decision I still stand beside. I forgot about my degree or any of my hobbies and I began searching for a job that paid well. I did have a degree from a good school and I quickly learned that’s all that really matters is actually having the degree. I have yet to find a job that asks for your resume (the classmate who had a 3.2 and you with your 4.0 still have the same diploma AKA no need to kill yourself in the library at 3am every night but I digress…)
So in accepting that I was done with dreams and was ready to just make life work for me, I was lucky enough to land myself with an office job that at the time I assumed would give me that gratification I was looking for while I saved some money and plotted my next move. But somehow that office job turned into my career. Six years later the world of corporate politics, red eye flights, comped accommodations and the overall sheer insanity of working in a male-dominated industry are all a very normal part of my life.
If you’ve just graduated college and have landed your first corporate job or you’re thinking of heading in that direction, I’m going to do my best to share my experiences to make your decision easier. I’m going to do so honestly; these were things I learned and am still learning...all of which I learned alone. I know that the corporate world can be extremely problematic but I truly love what I do and I’m very fulfilled by it. But simply put: it’s not for everyone.
You don’t just have to work hard, you have to work the hardest. There is the very real perception that millennials are entitled and materialistic and dependent on technology as their basis of knowledge. So work hard but also work harder than your older coworkers. It’s likely they have also had time to “pay their dues”. This is a very real thing; this idea that you have to sacrifice more and do the tougher, less desirable jobs to prove your worth. I’m not saying this was explicitly stated to me as an expectation but I have yet to find another millennial that hasn’t faced this and found it as an effective tool to get ahead. So fight that stereotype and kick butt. It feels good to prove people wrong, especially older people who think you’re a certain way just because you were born a specific year.
Make all of your social media private. And stay on top what’s not meant to be private. I think this goes without saying but make Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. all private. This isn’t just because companies really do use these platforms to get a good idea of who you are but also because after you’re hired your coworkers will do the same thing. Let people make their own judgements of you based on your work attitude and performance. You also want to draw that line between your personal and work life. They don’t need to know what you do on the weekends. Privacy is important (and respected!). Similarly make sure you’re staying on top of business websites like LinkedIn. Even if it doesn’t seem like it, everyone is on LinkedIn. Everyone. Keep yours current, ask colleagues for references...make it as thorough as possible. You have the upper hand when it comes to social media so use that knowledge to your advantage when it comes to virtual networking!
Tattoos. I have them. A lot of my coworkers have them. As you’ll quickly find, there are things men can do in an office environment that women cannot. A woman with tattoos is far more scandalous than a man with tattoos. But being a twenty-something in a corporate setting means spending a substantial amount of time picking clothing and dressing in a way that will cover my tattoos. Yes, tattoos are definitely more mainstream than they used to be but unless you’re working for some hip start-up, it’d be in your best interest to keep yours hidden.
Is this a hill you want to die on? The corporate world, especially when its as competitive as it so often is for twenty-somethings, has you often biting your tongue. You’ll find yourself swallowing words down or even just ignoring the sexist, rude things your coworkers or bosses say. If you’re thinking to yourself ‘well I don’t want to work for a company like that then’...good luck finding a company where this doesn’t exist. Often I deal with this from clients. It is a business and I am a businesswoman. I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to get a job done.
Who you are at home is not who you will be at the office. I keep my mouth shut a lot. Part of it is an effort to be respectful and learn from my mentors. Other times it is because my opinion, while correct or warranted, is not needed or requested. This is not the time to assert my authority on feminism or poverty or gentrification. I work for a company, not for my own special interests. I love what I do but at the end of the day I need the paycheck it produces so it’s important to leave your ego at the door. We’re not talking about manufacturing atom bombs; I have a client that insists women in their office wear skirts and tights everyday. I want to keep that corporate relationship so I just make sure I wear a skirt and tights that day. Is it my favorite? No. But I’m not friends with this company, we’re business partners. This isn’t about my feelings or beliefs, it’s about working together on a common goal. Let’s put it this way: I didn’t get where I am by cancelling meetings because some sexist asshole insists on an outdated wardrobe.
They hate you, but they need you. One minute your (male) bosses are making jokes about millenials (a term they use to mean anyone younger than 30...don’t educate them on the differences in generations because they don’t care) and the next they’re reaching out to ask your opinion on market content as a millennial. Similarly, they’ll criticize your age group for your dependency on technology while also needing your expertise on said technology. Social media? You’ll have more input than most of your marketing team. Find a way to give your experiences in a succinct and general manner. They’ll look at you like you’re some mythical creature because you understand things they do not but it’s okay because they appreciate it. You just may not get an actual thank you.
Don’t share your age. Everyone can tell just by looking at you that you are young-ish. Somehow labeling someone with a number magically evaluates their worth. Do not substantiate that label. Be inwardly proud that you’re young and killing it in whatever industry you’re thriving in. But do not do or say things that reveal your birthday, the year you graduated high school/college, etc. You’d be surprised how often it comes up (usually the year or an indicative event that happened around the time you graduated college) because those years are not that far away for you as they likely are for your coworkers. You also don’t want clients knowing your age. If you ever make a mistake it will boil down to the fact that you’re twenty-something, not the fact that you’re human...because twenty-somethings are not, in fact, human apparently.
Find your people. If you work a lot (and you will), it’s important that you like who you work with. Everyone’s human. You may really like your job but still have days where you don’t want to do this thing you essentially have to do 5 days/week for the rest of your life. But having friends at work, having people you can laugh and joke with, who know who you are beyond your job, is so important. Just do your best to strike that balance because at the end of the day they are coworkers and there are things they don’t need to know/see.
Remember that it is a business. When it comes to dealing with clients and coworkers while it is important to remember these people have feelings it is not your job to make decisions based on those feelings. Everyone has entered the same corporate world you have, understanding what they are getting into. Do not compromise your integrity because the coworker being unproductive is someone you like. You’re all a team. You all need to pull your own weight. If they care about their job and their career, they’ll thank you later.
This isn’t forever. Remember that whole “paying your dues” thing I mentioned? I’m a big believer in it. Like any job, things become easier as the years pass not just because you know more but because you’ve gotten to the point where you have clout: people know what you’re capable of, they know and trust your work ethic, and you’ll make less mistakes and those you make will be more easily forgiven. Moving up in the corporate world is not only an accomplishment but a power grab. You are now in more control of what job you do, who you do it for, and for what compensation.
I now have a job with an amazing company: respectful, open-minded, inclusive and with good compensation and benefits. But I honestly wouldn’t have been able to get the job with them if I hadn’t dealt with the much harsher companies first. Again, the corporate world is not for everyone but those that do thrive in it come out with grit (read: determination, perseverance, confidence, bravery, etc.), which becomes far more valuable than your college degree or the volunteering and internships you’ve done. It’s a world that whips you into shape very quickly but also shows you what is important to you and the things you need to do to get it.
Keep an open mind. I still have friends struggling to pay their bills but following their dreams and chasing those jobs they went to school for. Sometimes I’m jealous of them - they have a different type of grit my mental health never let me have. But happiness can come in many forms and my job in the corporate world and the lifestyle it affords me work for me. It’s important to realize that while millennials generally look down on corporate jobs, these positions aren’t going anywhere soon and we are a resilient, adaptive generation that should give them a chance and use them to our advantage. The job you have is only as good as you make it. Attitude is everything. Make the job you have work for you. We will not be the entry-level overworked underdogs forever; some day these companies will be ours to run.
