This is another part in chapter 4 that people haven't said too too much about for understandable reasons--it mostly just reads like a fluffy flashback to add to the emotional distress of the current situation:

But! It's kind of one of my own favourite parts about this chapter because of how one-sided and limited the perspective is here: we're seeing Marcille through Falin's eyes, in the form of a memory, from when she was a kid.

My primary focus in this scene was to capture a floaty, kind of detached approach to other people that Falin had as a child--it wasn't that she didn't care, it was more of a childlike resignation that she doesn't understand people, never will, and just kind of going with the flow. She hadn't really learned to mask or be vigilant towards other people's moods yet, in essence. I hope that you can clearly read Falin's detailed and attentive adoration of Marcille juxtaposed with a deeply uncurious attitude towards Marcille's inner thoughts and feelings beyond what she's willing to share.

The other thing I wanted to show was a glimpse of just how much Falin was also Marcille's first friend outside of her family in ways that were so important to her, even if Falin never realized. In my head, the way she approached her social life was colored by some weird and deeply rooted belief that no one would ever bother with her if she wasn't as smart as she was. She had trouble getting accepted into schools as a kid, meaning that she and her parents did apply and were rejected--the magic academy is the first time she's ever been able to be in a social environment without her family, and she got in because she was already an accomplished mage who was fully qualified to be in the research track.

So for Falin to make her feel safe, and like she didn't have to be either helpful or entertaining for someone to enjoy her company meant a great deal to her. Falin didn't care, and couldn't even conceive of a reason why anyone would dislike that Marcille didn't have interesting things to say all the time. In much more subtle ways, Falin's unconditional acceptance of Marcille was much of a first and a revelation for Marcille as Marcille was to Falin.

(So it's unfortunate that there's such a disconnect--Falin thinks that Marcille is just uncomfortable with her like a stranger again. Marcille, on the other hand, is freaking out because her anxiety and insecurity have been renewed, and she doesn't really know how to handle the fact that she wants Falin to find her attractive and interesting and all that.

In a happier and lighter story, this would all be resolved without further hurt and miscommunication :) but we all know that's not what you're here for.)

First of all thank you so so much!! Every nice word and kudos mean the world to me, and for rarepairs they're all the more cherished 💖 And yes anon, I absolutely do plan on making more for them! As much as I can manage, a library's worth if possible. They're my absolute Dungeon Meshi OTP and Dunmeshi’s been my obsession for like 10 months now, I'm a huge shipper & I love making fancontent and yeahh it's not stopping anytime soon. Though I am a slow writer... And I really should get around to finishing my older non-dunmeshi wips too 😫

I’ve talked about marchil fanfic prompts/wips a couple times on here, and very recently even about a sequel to Grind Me Down Sweetly actually! The fic’s a lot about having a familiar routine with someone and sort of growing used to that, to knowing someone like that and with sharing his days and his living space with someone again, about growing open to the idea that maybe just maybe he and Marcille could have something in the first place. And it’s kept pretty platonic due to that and whatnot, but I recently thought that, since the arc of him becoming more aware and open to the relationship got done in GMDS, doing a sequel where we actually see the relationship grow more romantic would be cute!! Warming up to the romantic nature of their relationship like settling down into a cozy couch. And this time rather than coffee it’ll be centered around what all the best cafes have… Cats!

Gonna summarize the concepts of some of my marchil fic wips under the cut, if you’d rather go in blind when they… Eventually get written, then you can just stop here and safely be assured that I am 100% planning on writing more for them! Oh, btw I also take prompts and requests, though I can’t promise anything.

Alright so GMDS sequel: I think in canon both Marcille and Chilchuck have a special dynamic with Izutsumi, where they care after her, not unlike Senshi but with more feelings attached. With her traveling around, I feel like every once in a while they’d talk about her, dealing with the worry and the uncertainty. Marcille is like "My fragile baby bird out into the world… She needs to at least live to be 100 years old 😭" while Chil knows how it’s like and just trusts her to be alright, like with Puckpatti. And so!! Every time she sees a stray cat while strolling out her heart pangs… There are many strays in Chilchuck’s neighborhood, and with her pushing for it they start leaving some food out for them. At one point she sees one standing out in the rain all pitifully in front of Chil’s shop and she invites it in (to Chilchuck’s despair), and from then on it’s still a stray but it has a home to go back to… Until Marcille officially adopts it. And it can showcase Marcille and Chil’s growing relationship alongside that metaphorically, where she sorta moves in and they grow more boldly affectionate, and it’s like… Domesticating love… 😌 Man didn’t want a cat, a cat daughter nor a new lover, but they took a liking to him and were stubborn about getting close to him and now there they all are. I like to say that post-canon despite Chil living alone in his shop he gets a second family of clingy asses, and this is exactly what I mean. Vibe wise I’d like it to have that cozy energy of spending a slow afternoon at a nice quiet cafe on a rainy day, but we’ll see how I manage it! It’s not the highest on my writing priorities currently though.

Other marchil fic ideas I’ve talked about are… Following them on that time pre-canon where they went to shop for a pouch together would be cute. I have a long post talking about them being sick and caring for each other would be like and that’d make a fun whump fic too. He gets sick and she dotes on him, she indulges herself and kisses him anyways, and then of course he passes it on to her right as he gets better so then it’s her turn getting taken care of hehe.

This one’s more convoluted, so either Marcille invites him to a fancy social event at the castle as her plus-one (aka emotional support) maybe already dating maybe on the verge of confessing, OR they’re already dating and then Marcille’s mom visits them and it’s very sweet and maybe marriage talks happens~, but in both cases Chilchuck is going through SO much stress. Just Chilchuck’s heart being on the absolute edge of giving out, going through the five stages of grief over the banquet not having his favorite kind of alcohol and Marcille not letting him be an ornamental plant in the corner of the room and doing the bare minimum. Or having to engage with her mom and seeming worthy of being her lover as his shit is only barely pulled together after they hurry to ready his house to host her as a guest. And I have a bunch of wips where I tackle them properly doing a confession or a proposal… I was planning on making a comic about it even. Here’s a lil taste of them talking about getting into a relationship together~

I have non-marchil dunmeshi fanfics I want to prioritize too, but idk idk I’ll see what I end up getting around to… I like having a new vision to offer with each fic, so I tend to prioritize fics that take a new angle for the same ship or tackle different characters and themes, so I can see myself pushing myself to do other stuff before falling back into my marchil comfort zone.

answering the last question first because the context is needed... my s/i is a half-foot beastman! a rabbit, to be exact.

it took me a while to really warm up to anyone who wasn't laios or falin for a bit! due to my s/i's past (which is a whole post in itself) there's a lot of trust issues and new people are scary.

i met falin and marcille in the dungeon -- basically i split from my original party, and when i ran into falin she just has such a kind caring vibe so i was like. "pls i have GOT to get out of here" and she agreed immediately ofc. marcille was a little iffy about it but is incapable of saying no to falin!! so! i suppose i did become a temporary party member, though not really much of a fighter. i was originally taken down to be bait so i was kind of a liability but --

honestly i am SUCH a picky eater. both irl and my s/i... this is made even worse by my race limiting my diet even more. but gosh uhh i like sweet stuff, and plant-based meals. laios celebrates our anniversaries with carrot cake and i think that's my favorite just for the sentiment 🥰

i love everyone for different reasons, of course, but i am probably closest to falin! she's just so sweet and patient and a great listener. laios and i don't have a lot of issues with our relationship but when we do i know i can always go to her, and as a bonus since she knows her brother so well she usually gives really good advice regarding him!!

conversely, i probably get along the least well with chilchuck. he thinks i lack self-respect because i let people treat me like a kid. i mean really im just a little bit 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 but he doesn't need to know that. he does like me at the end of the day... he is in fact not immune to the cute act

Day 9 Lovestruck

In such a place as the dungeon, moments of peaceful safety were few and far between. Each of these moments however was to be enjoyed and were often spent around a campfire eating and celebrating another day of life. Such was the situation that night as the group huddled around the fire as senshi was preparing the dinner for that night. “Laois, mind being a good man and helping me cut the vegetables?”

Senshi asked laios who nodded happily, grabbing a knife as the two of them got to work chopping the vegetables.

“Moss, mind helping by slowly roasting the meat using that fire of yours..oh and please be mindful to not make it too hot, want a slow roast of the meat. Too hot and it will dry out.”

Senshi said looking over, the half dragon man smiled and made his way towards the rack the meat was hanging on.

“You got it senshi, i promise i won't burn them like last time”

He said with a chuckle, he took a deep breath  as he filled his chest with oxygen before breathing out a small stream of purple fire that crackled and sparked beneath the rack, he was going to be here awhile. Stopping every so often to catch his breath before returning to breathing the fire, using his clawed hand to rotate the rack so the meat was heated evenly.

On the other side sat the rest of the group, Chilchuck and marcille had already started helping senshi by peeling and mashing potatoes into a bowl. This only left izutsumi who sat there staring at moss as he worked, completely unaware of her gaze on him. She couldn't take her eyes off him, the way his chest filled and emptied with each breath he took, the way the purple light of the fire placed a soft purple glow to his goateed face, the way he moved as he rotated the rack.

He wouldn't leave her mind ever since they had found him. She remembered reacting with a violent fury when she realized the condition he was in and what he had endured, she had attributed it to how she was treated when she was little. However as time had gone on that anger changed into something different, she had no word for it at first. It was this all consuming focus, he filled her mind seemingly every waking hour. When she was not interacting with him her mind was focussed on him, asking where he was, if he was ok, missing his presence. She couldn't explain it but the thought of him made her cheeks feel warm and she could feel her heart flutter each time she thought of him. It took quite a while before she realized she was madly in love with this man, something she had never felt before and made her uncertain of what to do.

She continued to stare at him, watching him work as her pupils dilated wide, a side effect of her half cat soul, a sign of her attention and affection. She stared quietly before she suddenly heard a loud snapping next to her causing her to hiss and hop up and away from the sound in shock. The sudden loud sound and movement drew everyone's attention as they looked at izutsumi, her hair raised up in anger.

“Chilchuck what the hell was that for!”

She hissed angrily as she scowled at the halfling who scowled back at her.

“I've been trying to get your attention for five minutes now but you were too busy making goo goo eyes at moss!”

He yelled as he pointed a finger at her, her eyes once again went wide but this time out of anxiety as her hair stood up on end.

“I was just!...I was!...shut up shortie i was looking at something behind him!”

She huffed angrily as she quickly stood up, trying her best to hide her blush as she quickly ran off away from the group. Moss stood there blushing and looking at everyone confused.

“W-wait she was looking at me?”

He asked confused, Marcille couldn't help but giggle at how oblivious he was to it. Laios and senshi had been too busy prepping food and had not managed to see anything but based on her reaction they believed it. Chilchuck pinched the bridge of his nose as he sighed in exasperation.

“I could hear her purring from here even over the sound of your fire”

He said, causing the half dragon man's tail spikes to rattle and clack together, something that seemed to only happen out of excitement.

“Oh…”

Was his only response, a comment almost as much to himself as everyone else. I actually really loved how this one turned out, i think it flows well and i had fun writing this. also its really cute and i love it XD prompt and credits here!

22:50 PM   —  [hizzie] hope confessing her feelings to marcel and rebekah

The balmy sun was warming Hope’s skin. She was seated next to Marcel, silently enjoying the breath-taking New York’s sunset, both holding different milkshakes.

“You look happy, kid.” Marcel smiled as his ears captured a low laugh coming from Hope, whose eyes were now locked at her phone.

“Look what Lizzie sent me.” Hope turned her screen at Marcel, showing a picture of Lizzie holding an ice cream cone close to the camera, pretending that Pisa Tower was her ice cream.

“So, who is she?” Marcel finally asked, returning his attention to the view from the top of the roof.

“She is my friend. The Star Wars girl.”

“Oh, I remember.” Marcel hummed with a playful smile growing on his lips. “She is pretty.”

“Yea, she is.” A wide smile took over her mouth while her fingers were busy answering her, still laughing lowly about the photo.

“And you like her.”

“Yes I-“ Hope eyes widened, stopping her from saying the next words. “Hey, don’t do that!” She punched Marcel’s arm who kept laughing amused with the red roses flourishing on her cheeks.

“Don’t do what?”

 Rebekah’s joined them, after taking care of some bureaucracy issues related to her company. Swiftly, the girl seated on Marcel’s lap, wrapping her fingers around his neck.

 “Your nephew h-“

“Marcel, I will kill you if you try to say another word.” Hope whispered between her teeth, making Rebekah more curious.

“I feel offended. You trust more Marcel than in me?” Rebekah opened her mouth, pretending to be shocked.

“Fine, whatever.” Hope rolled her eyes, trying not to smile. “I was just showing him a picture of Lizzie.”

“Oh, the blonde Saltzman?” Rebekah smirked and looked at Marcel, exchanging playful gazes between them before grabbing her nephew’s phone. Rebekah analyzed the female centered on the phone, zooming in to see her outfit. Her fashion sense was amazing. “She is pretty. Why were you so shy about sharing the photo?” Rebekah handed back Hope’s cell.

 Hope pressed her lips tightly before placing the phone on the glass table in front of them. She could feel her cheeks burning with the pression coming from her aunt and Marcel. Was she that obvious?

 “Oh, you like her.” Rebekah stated, looking delighted at her niece whose eyes finally met her.

 Rebekah wasn’t blind. It’s been a while since she started to notice how Hope couldn’t stop babbling about Lizzie Saltzman. It started with silly things such as ‘Lizzie and I are going to this nice art exhibition next week’ or ‘I can’t call you tomorrow, I’m going out with Lizzie’. After months, Hope started mentioning her name almost every day: she was always talking about minimal details about the Saltzman sister, about her weird obsession for shoes, her talent to style her own hair, how the matcha latte made by her was really good and so on.

 “N-no I don’t.” Hope rolled her eyes, coughing uncomfortable.

“There is nothing wrong about liking a girl, especially Lizzie. She seems to be a lovely girl.” Marcel nodded, agreeing with her.

“Yes, she is. She is really special actually. I am just afraid of screwing everything up.”

“You? Hope, you are amazing.” Rebekah leaned at Hope’s direction, caressing her hand. “Hope, you of all people, deserve to be happy.”

 Hope raised her chin, looking at Marcel and Rebekah whose eyes were focused on her.

 “Do I?”

“Of course you do.” Rebekah laughed. “Besides, I would love to meet her. Her fashion sense it’s amazing.”

“I know!” Her face brightened up. “You should see her plaid jeans collection.”

  Marcel kept quiet, enchanted by those women in front of him whose mouths were talking about things that he couldn’t understand. The sparkle on Hope’s eyes made his heart flutter: he couldn’t tell the last time he saw her this happy. The reassurance of knowing that Hope had someone next to her that was able to make her eyes shine again, made Marcil grin at her.

This is mahogany to a golden blonde ombré. My favorite part of this look is to see the darker tones as they change to the lighter hue. Long layers and textured ends, and adding a small wave pulls everything together.

Any advice for someone considering it?

It's a slightly more care-intensive look, but that's great if you want a more vibrant color and plenty of brightness. This customer is really bubbly, so this look fits her so well. It's always good when you get blond to hydrate well with a mask, make low temperature settings on your hot tools, and use sulfate-free products.

This is a soft strawberry blonde achieved with Redken Shades EQ in a light copper tone. We applied it with a bowl and a brush to clean dry hair for optimal longevity and opacity. This color has been tinted over previously blonde hair with Redken Shades EQ, so it will need some care. Gloss levels only last 4-6 weeks, depending on your home care. If you use cool water for the shampoo at home, shampoo 1-2 times a week while using dry shampoo in between, you can keep that color alive and beautiful longer.

Summer time is fun in the sun and that can also cause some colors to fade to age. If you go outdoors for baseball games, for cooking or just for a drink on the patio, I always recommend using a product with UV protection first. My favorite sunscreen for my hair is Shimmer Shine or Shimmer Me Blonde by Kevin Murphy.
