money sense — zhongli oneshot
pairing: zhongli x gn!reader tags: fluff, established crush on zhongli and everyone knows except him, a little bit of crack, ambiguous ending but it’s not sad summary: funds are running low so aether dumps zhongli at your door one day and asks you to teach the man how to haggle. wc: 1.3k
Tumblr media
It was a little past three in the afternoon when Aether arrived at your door with Paimon, screeching incessantly. Startled by the sudden intrusion, you emerged from your workroom to see a familiar trio by your door.
Your heart skips a beat when your gaze lands on Zhongli, standing beside Aether while engaging Paimon in what could only be described as a one-sided argument. You take a few seconds to calm yourself down whilst also finding amusement in the trio’s predicament.
Before you could even raise a hand in greeting, you get interrupted by Paimon.
“We have no money left!” Paimon cried, clutching dramatically at her little head. “Y/N! Please teach this guy how to haggle, you’re the only one we know who’s the best at getting discounts!” Clinging onto you, the guide points an accusatory finger at Zhongli, with an angry pout on her face.
Aether nodded along furiously, crossing his arms as he sighed heavily while looking at Zhongli who seemed to not be the least bit bothered by their lack of Mora. Certainly, being an ex-god, the man had his quirks.
One that was simply unacceptable for a group of travellers.
Lack of money sense.
“Please Y/N, we’ve seen you haggle at the harbour and getting nearly half off,” Aether said earnestly, admiration shining in his eyes. It took you less than a second to remember what he was talking about. No doubt, he was referring to the time you spent almost an hour at Xigu Antiques, bargaining as if your life depended on it.
Unsure of whether you should be embarrassed or flattered you simply put both your hands up in surrender while ignoring the subtle rise of blush on your cheeks when you meet Zhongli’s strong gaze. The man nods his head at you in greeting and you hastily nod back, hoping that you didn’t look too eager when you did so.
“I’m flattered, but are you guys sure you’d want me to teach him how to haggle?” You ask, tearing your eyes away from Zhongli’s face as you spoke directly to Aether.
“Please.” Aether and Paimon say simultaneously, in all seriousness. It was almost comical, the way Aether and his guide were absolutely in sync for once.
“I agree, I believe haggling is part and parcel of Liyue Harbor’s culture and learning such a skill would certainly become a benefit.” Zhongli’s deep voice resonated easily in your small home.
You realised that your guests had been politely standing by the entrance, save for Paimon who was always quick to break a few rules. Heat rose to your face as you gestured for them to come in.
“P-please come right in! I’ll make some tea right now!” You stumbled across your words, embarrassed that you had forgotten your manners. As you were about to make your way to the kitchen and make tea, a warm gloved hand lands on your forearm, holding you in place.
“It’s fine, Y/N. It was our fault for intruding upon you.” Zhongli assured, his sweet half-smile causing your heart to race.
You nod meekly, not trusting yourself to speak without stuttering. You rubbed at your skin where Zhongli had touched, feeling the goosebumps that emerged.
“Then I guess we’ll leave him to you then, Y/N!” Paimon announced gleefully. The little guide floats towards your face and leans in to whisper in your ear.
“Good luck!” Paimon whispers, winking secretively.
Rather than luck, you wished you’d have a stronger heart.
Tumblr media
“I believe these tomatoes are of the highest quality. Fresh and grown with care, these tomatoes are suitable for Y/N’s diet. Farming is a skill honed with years of experience as such I will buy all your tomatoes.”
You wanted nothing more than to knock yourself unconscious with the nearest pillar.
It had been an hour since you began your shopping trip with Zhongli for groceries. It was supposed to be a simple lesson, teaching him how to pick which store to buy from and how to obtain a discount from the store.
Yet, Zhongli and his infinite knowledge were attempting to burn a hole through your wallet.
“Stop!” You throw the vendor an apologetic smile and drag Zhongli away by the arm.
“Zhongli... We’re supposed to be buying only what we need, and obtaining a discount.” You explained once more, hoping he’d understand. “I understand you hold great respect for excellent farmers but this,” You gesture to your wallet, “Has only 500 Mora.”
You hear a snicker behind your back and immediately lower your head, shoving your wallet back into your pockets.
Zhongli was quiet for a moment as he stared at you intensely. You were beginning to wonder if you had something on your face.
“I see... It was my mistake. I’ve only been seeing things in the perspective of a seller’s ideal customer. Please continue to teach me how to haggle, I am certain I will do better this time around.” He said, “So, please continue the lesson... Y/N Sensei.” Chuckling to himself, you watch Zhongli head back to the store with your face bright red and your mind short-circuiting from the witnessing Zhongli’s laugh.
An inexplicable warmth bloomed in your chest as you jogged to catch up to Zhongli.
“Pardon me, but I’d like to buy 5 tomatoes,” Zhongli said, glancing over to you. You nodded and smiled back at him, encouraging him to continue.
“That’d be 600 Mora.”
Boring your gaze onto Zhongli’s side profile, you could only hope that he had learned from his previous mistake.
“My partner here only has 500 Mora, would it be alright if you’d lower the price for them please?”
You smack your face into your hands, sinking to the floor. The mention of yourself being Zhongli’s partner barely made it through your mind as the barely-contained giggles from the vendor filled your ears.
“I-I’m sure... I can make ah... ha... an exception t-today.” The vendor managed to get out.
“Y/N, he agreed to the discount,” Zhongli stated, satisfaction practically rolling off of him in waves.
Through the gaps of your fingers, you see Zhongli turn and pause. Possibly because you were crouched on the floor and he had no idea what he had just done.
“Do you not have 500 Mora? I thought you-”
Unable to take it any longer, you stand up quickly and hand the money over, receiving your bag of tomatoes in exchange.
“Thank you...” You mumbled to the vendor, red-faced, holding on tightly to your bag of tomatoes.
“My pleasure! I wish both of you happiness!” The vendor grinned.
Before you could protest, Zhongli had intercepted.
“Thank you for your kind words.” He replied, graciously accepting the handshake offered by the vendor. Shaking your head in disbelief, you chuckled to yourself as a form of comfort and took upon the chance to gaze upon Zhongli unabashedly while he was distracted.
As the hustle and bustle of Liyue Harbor reached its evening peak, the setting sun cast a warm glow against the city, illuminating everything within reach, golden.
Yet, your focus was only on him.
Everything about him ensnared your senses and forced you to only look at him.
His dark hair that faded to ombre at the tips shone a bright gold in wisps and his eyes that seemed to hold an abundance of intellect and mysteries only made you fall for him more.
You let out an appreciative sigh, unaware that Zhongli’s conversation with the vendor had long since ended.
“Y/N?”
You blinked a few times, snapping out of your trance.
“I think we’ll end today’s lesson here.” You hastily respond, giving Zhongli a warm smile. “You did well.”
“Naturally. I was taught by the best.” He replied smoothly. “Though, I think I much prefer to call you partner rather than Sensei... I guess imitating Childe wasn’t for me.” He muttered, resting his chin between his pointer finger and thumb.
You could only laugh as he fell into deep thought.
Surely, one day you’d have the confidence to let him know about your feelings.
“Then I’ll head home first, Zhongli.”
“Of course, goodbye Y/N.”
As you waved goodbye to him, you could only think about the next time you’d see him again.
end.
This is my first genshin impact fic and it’s for geo daddy who still refuses to come home. anyways, hope you guys enjoy this one-shot and feel free to raid my inbox lol i’m looking for mutuals on here :3c

💔Dainseif x Reader
Tumblr media
a bit Houseki no Kuni crossover/ characters
It's been so long since the fall of Khaenri'ah, there isn't much I remember from those times. Most of which are small facts and details most likely lost to time. Though there is one precious thing or person I remember before the Gods' wrath fell upon the city, their name was Y/n. I remember their lovely smile, their warm embrace, the softness of their skin, and their melodious voice whispering sweet nothing into my ear.
Sadly they were taken from me in the destruction of Khaenri'ah. It was my duty as the Twilight Sword to protect the people of Khaenri'ah, to protect them, and I failed. A curse of long life was placed upon me as many of the people turned and transformed into monsters.
I fell into despair when the strange goddess from Celestia appeared before me. If I were to stop the rebellion from the abyss, she would return what I lost. At first, I had no idea what she could have meant, but I would learn soon. In desperation, I foolishly agreed to her wishes, looking back now I shouldn't have so stupidly agreed. The gods have never blessed me in the past, I should have never hoped they would in the future. After so long many details of Y/n have faded, and at times I wonder if they were just my imagination.  Yet I did meet strange people along my travels, one of them had grown dear to me.
---------
The last thing I remember is seeing a red sky with a strange goddess glaring down at everyone below. Red and black cubes floated about her. Some was calling out a name, Y/n I believe, then suddenly everything goes black as I was shoved to the ground. During that time of darkness, all I could feel was a strong will. I didn't want to perish and return too... I can no longer remember. Whenever I try to search my mind all I can find is a strange figure standing ahead of me, with its hand outstretched to me.
When I finally opened my eyes, I found myself surrounded by ruins that had long burned. Plants grew through the fissures in the destroyed stones, many skeletons were scattered along the ground. I felt strange for some reason, looking down at my arms, they sparkled in the sunlight. It shined a gleaming blue, it looked like Noctilucous Jade. My whole body seemed to be made of it; my legs, fingers, even my (Hair length) hair glimmered of the gem. Who am I?
I shakily got to my feet, as my body shined in the sun. The land ahead was a beautiful green as the leaves and trees swayed in the gentle wind. I was quite obviously alone, but why? Why was I so desperate for life? Maybe If I wander about I'll... Find my answer.
-------------
As I tracked the abyss, I came across a small group of the abyss mages. Who was occupied with corning some poor wanderer, raising my hand and unleashing my power made quick work of the horrid creatures. Something was off about this wanderer, so I approached cautiously. This being looked to be made of precious material, jade perhaps. Yet their form looked familiar to me, somehow.
A brief image of Y/n flashed in my mind. Yet I quickly shook my head, they are not the same. Everyone from Khaenri'ah
"umm, thank you, sir," They said as they slowly stood.
As looked them over, and noticed they wore greatly diminished garments of a Khaenri'ahen citizen. "Where did you get those clothes?" I asked.
"I don't know, I just woke up with these clothes," The being said as they looked down at their clothes.
"So wondered, why do you travel teyvat?" I asked them.
"I do not remember, I just remember not wanting to parish and return to someone. Yet I can't remember who?" they said with a confused look in their eyes. " Why do you travel?"
"That is not important," I said simply.
"So why do your eyes appear so sad?" They asked again.
"What do you mean?" I asked them.
"You seem lonely. Can I travel with you, just till I find my answer," They begged?
Staring at their sparkling face, I couldn't shake that feeling of familiarity. Still, if they really are a tiny few of Khaenri'ahen that survive, and didn't turn into monsters. I guess their companionship would be fine I suppose.
"If that is what you wish I won't stop you, but I will be following dangerous monsters. I will not always be able to protect you, so follow at your own risk," I warned them.
"Thank you, Mr... Umm,"
"Dainseif," I answered. ," And what of your name?"
"Mr.Dainseif," They smiled warmly
"I don't remember my name, I'm not sure if I have one," The being said.
"Hmm, well from now on your name is... Jade," Dainseif said.
"Well, my name is jade. Mr.Dainseif,"
--------------------------
It has been 500 years since the fall of Khaenri'ah.
I have been traveling with Jade for almost as long, even when they learned many things of me. Even when the abyss princess offered Jade the option to join her and her war on destiny, Jade always remained by my side.
"Why didn't you leave with Lumine, jade?" I asked them.
"I understand her, but I don't think the entire fall of Khaenri'ah is your fault. And I don't think you're a bad person, so you must be doing this for a good reason," Jade smiled.
"No, I'm doing this for a selfish reason. The gods of Celestia promised me, that if I take down the abyss, they would return Y/n to me," Dainseif said with a sad and bitter look on his face," I was foolish to accept, but I now know better to anger the gods."
"You must really love this Y/n. That so sweet," Jade smiled warmly.
"I think they would have agreed with you, but it's unlikely they would actually return them to me," I explained.
"Well, it wouldn't be godly of them if they don't uphold their own promise right?" Jade asked.
"I suppose, but who can say," I said as a sigh escaped my lips." I really do hope Y/n is waiting for me at the end of this journey."
"So it's off to mondstadt right?" Jade asked with an excited smile on their face.
"Yes,"
----------------
In mondstadt we met a very odd but familiar-looking traveler, he looked very similar to Lumine, but with longer hair and different clothing. With him a floating child accompanied him, they seemed to be interested in Mr.Dainsleif. Soon they accompanied us on the hunt for the abyss herald. Soon we found ourselves in wolvendom
"Stay here Jade, I'm going to look around for further clues. If danger comes around, just find me, or run to safety and I'll come and find you," Dainsleif said gently to me.
"Alright, be careful," I said with slight worry on my face.
Dainsleif nodded as he patted my head softly. As I waited for his return My mind tried to dig further into my hazier memories. She remembers running with someone pulling her past the destruction of Khaenri'ah. Yet I was pulled from my thoughts when the traveler and Paimon shortly arrived.
"Oh, where did Dain go?" Paimon asked.
"He went to investigate the area further," I answered." He'll be back soon."
" O-oh alright. Hey, Jade right? So how long have you been traveling with Dain?" Piamon asked.
"For as long as I can remember," I answered simply.
"What is Dain like, if I may ask?" aether asked.
"Well. When I first met him, he was quiet and hard to talk to since he mostly kept to himself," I said, as I thought back. " Though Know he is very caring in his own way, and he is very lonely behind his stoic face."
"Lonely? W-what makes you say that?" Paimon asked.
"Well, a long time ago he lost his lover. And at times, I think he projects them onto me," I said slowly.
"What do you mean?" Aether asked.
"Sometimes when he is in time of sorrow, he would hug and hold me close, and whisper sweet things to me, but the name he calls is Y/n," I said sadly." The next day he would ask me to forget about it."
"Wha that so sad, Paimon feels sorry for him," Painmon frowns.
"What about you? Why do you travel with him?" Aether asked.
"At first I simply followed in hopes to learn about myself, and why I am this way along my journey with Dainsleif. Maybe learn what I have forgotten, but know I follow Dainsleif to keep him company. I can learn about my origins after Dain finishes his journey." I smiled.
But before we could continue our conversation, abyss mages and hilicurls appeared. They surrounded us as they slowly closed in on us. Aether readied his sword, as I unsheathed my sword as well.
The fight was tough, I got scrapped and chipped along the way but we managed. It of now was an ice shard flew past and cracked a good chunk of my face. Half of my face was broken off, but thankfully traveler made quick work of the monster.
"Ahh! Jade are you okay?!" Paimon gasped.
"I'm fine, thou could you help look for my face?" I asked.
"Jade!" Dainsleif called out.
I slowly and nervously turned to face Dain. As I slowly opened my one eye and saw the sadness and worry in his eyes.
" What happened? I thought I told you to run away at the first sign of danger," Dainsleif said as he cupped my cheek and held me close.
" We were surrounded, there was no choice but to fight," I said to him.
"You need to be careful, you're too fragile," Dainsleif sighed as his fingers traced the cracks on my face. As I stared I could see he wasn't seeing me.
"I'm fine, I just need the left side of my face," I said as I looked away.
"Y/- Jade, please be careful," Dain stuttered as he looked away bashfully," I'm sorry."
--------
Soon the two groups parted ways as Aether and Paimon watched them leave.
"Wow, Dain must really miss this Y/n person if he mistakes two different people," Paimon sighed sadly.
"Something tells me there destiny and journey are more intertwined then they relieaze," Aether said veguly.
"What makes you say that?" Paimon asked.
"Aether is not wrong about that," Venti said as he suddenly appeared.
"AHHH! Tone deaf bard what are you doing here?!" Paimon gasped.
"I was around dragon spire for awhile. Those two have such a tragic story," Venti frowned sadly.
"What do you mean?" Paimon asked
"The princess the knight searches for has always been by his side, and the companion made of beautiful jade's answer had always been beside them," Venti said sadly as he strumd his lyre.

Twelve Rounds
Read on AO3
“You know on the scale of the Qresh heist, your best plan, and the Leith escape route, your worst fucking plan, this is somewhere way closer to Leith,” Magnus whisper yells in the small space between them.
They’re trapped in a closet, oh the fucking irony, with a couple dozen guards just on the outside, guards that the guy they’re supposed to be picking up and taking back to the Rack wasn’t supposed to have.
Alec just rolls his eyes wiggling a hand into the miniscule space between them to undo the latch on his thigh holster. The fact that Magnus is blaming this on him, when the plans only gone to hells because Magnus’ intel was bad. It’s not because of Alec’s plan, Alec’s plan was simple and efficient dammit.
“Easy in, easy out,” Magnus had said tossing the tablet across the table at Alec nearly knocking over the very expensive, treat himself glass of hawk Alec had ordered. “The guy’s not smart and has never so much as bought a weapon to protect himself, the trip alone to get him won’t be longer than twenty minutes. We pick him up, we bring him back, warrant done and we make an easy 500 joy.”
Alec had scrolled through the warrant, reading it with a doubting eye.
“This guy has had six warrants on him go untouched, you sure it’s that easy?” Alec had asked and Magnus had just waved it away the rings on his fingers glittering in the low light of the bar.
“I already sent out some feelers, the intel is good,” Magnus said with a smile. “He’s just not wanted for anything big so no one’s ever bothered going through with the pick-up, now the price has gotten a little higher and I think we should add a little padding to our current bank balance.”
Alec had sighed dropping the tablet down. “The ship still needs new nav panels, they’re about to fall off, babe.”
“Exactly and 500 joy will fix those right up and we’ll still have some leftover to get a room for the night, a fancy one at the Westerley Inn instead of above the bar, maybe for a few nights,” Magnus said leaning across the table getting incrementally closer and closer to Alec. “Think about it, Alexander. No sleeping in the cold ship, nice fresh warm sheets, no running out of hot water in five minutes.”
Alec had wanted to say no, fixing the nav panels before taking on another warrant, easy or not, should have been the priority. But after being Killjoy’s together for seven years, lovers for six and husbands for two he’d always found himself saying yes to every single request, idea and silly whim Magnus had ever had.
Alec let out a long-suffering breath, “Fine, let’s do it.”
Magnus had beamed leaning across the table to kiss him once before accepting the warrant and running off to the ship to get things ready. Alec had smiled, shaking his head in amusement at his husband.
Now he wishes he had a better resolve to just say no.
“I’m not the one who got bad intel,” Alec whisper yells back. “If your intel had been good my plan would have worked.”
Magnus scoffs attempting to cross his arms in annoyance but realizes at the last minute there isn’t enough room to do so. He settles for poking Alec in the side once instead.
“Really?” Alec whispers looking incredulously at Magnus. Magnus just shrugs huffing in annoyance.
“How was I supposed to know the intel was bad,” he argues. “It was from a trusted source.”
“Jace is not a trusted source, if you had told me it was Jace of all people I never would have even agreed to take the warrant in the first place,” Alec whisper shouts back. He feels ridiculous whisper fighting with his husband in a poorly lit linen closet. They should be playfully bantering to the annoyance of their catch with a completed warrant in their hands right now.
“He’s your brother,” Magnus hisses back.
“Exactly and I know just how stupid he is,” Alec replies attempting to wave his hands around as he speaks angrily the way he likes to. He gives up after a second realizing there’s just not enough space to do that. “He fights, he’s a great shot, but his intel is garbage because he never thinks ahead. Simon is who you get the intel from.”
Magnus sighs and Alec can tell from the look on his face he knows Alec’s right.
“I have half the mind to just slip out of here and call it all off n-” Alec starts, but Magnus lifts a hand slapping it over Alec’s mouth silencing him. Through the closet doors Alec hears the slow purposeful footsteps of at least six people maybe closer to eight walking outside.
Magnus drops his hand but not until the footsteps have disappeared.
“Good news I think they’ve given up searching for us in the house,” he whispers biting his glossy bottom lip in thought.
“Bad news there are two dozen of them and there’s two of us,” Alec replies. “Not to mention the guy we’re supposed to be taking with us.” He tacks on suddenly remembering the whole point of this at the last moment.
“We’ve faced worse odds and lived to drink about it,” Magnus says with a smile. Alec’s face doesn’t budge determined to hold onto his stony annoyance.
Magnus sighs tilting his head and slipping his arms around Alec’s waist. “I’m sorry my intel was bad and that your brother is stupid,” he says pouting in that frustratingly fake, but frustratingly sexy way that Alec never can quite resist. “And also that you’re plan sucked.”
Alec huffs out a breath unable to fight the smile creeping at the corner of his lips.
“You fully loaded?” Alec asks tapping at the side of Magnus’ thigh holster.
“For you?” he says shifting his hips up against Alec’s. “Always.”
“Magnus, be serious,” Alec says not able to resist shifting is own hips back in retaliation.
Magnus groans then his face goes fully solemn. “I’m always serious about you and my load.”
Alec only barely stops the laugh he lets out from being too loud. He is married to a ridiculous, brilliant, beautiful man.
“Twelve rounds a piece, that’s one shot per guard for both of us. And then the hopes that the idiot we need to catch doesn’t count them or doesn’t know how many are in a sidearm and buys it when we threaten to shoot him too,” Alec says pointedly shifting a bit to the side so their hips are no longer pressed together, trying to ignore the thoughts Magnus’ completely unsubtle innuendos put inside his head.
“Don’t miss,” Magnus says with a wicked smirk unholstering his weapon and bringing it up to the ready. Alec does the same with a matching smirk of his own.
“For you?” he says winking once before reaching his hand above Magnus to push open the closet door. “I never do.”
Magnus chuckles delighted and uncaring if the guards hear them as Alec shoves open the door. Magnus spins gracefully his electric blue ammunition flying down the hall instantly hitting through the wrist of the first reacting guard. Alec moves behind him the two of them working in perfect tandem like they always do bobbing and weaving as they should around and over one another disarming the guards one by one hitting them in just the right spots to take them down, but keep them alive.
They’re not here on a kill warrant and even if they were they’re not fans of taking out more than the target anyways. They’re only getting paid for them in the end.
Alec ducks behind a near wall Magnus covering him as he heads towards the door of the house already wide open the hot Westerley desert air blowing inside.
“Shit,” he says harshly just before catching sight of one of the last guards hovering outside of the door. Putrid yellow ammunition makes its way around the corner narrowly missing him. Alec ducks behind a shitty looking old couch that reminds him annoyingly of the chair he never saw his father get up from as a child.
Magnus comes sliding in next to him a grin on his face. “Got mine,” he says popping his head up once over the edge of the chair. Another round of ammo whizzes past him, actually grazing the stark neon pink patch of hair at the front of his head.
“Well he’s almost out of ammo, or he’s a terrible shot,” Magnus says ducking back down quickly.
“We’re also almost out of ammo, I’ve got one round for this one guy,” Alec says. He takes a deep collecting breath. He dips his head around the corner of the chair catching sight of the guard in the reflection from the window. The guard doesn’t take a shot despite Alec’s vulnerable position which tells him he’s definitely down to his last round as well.
He starts to make the move to take his final shot changing course at the last second.
“Switch me,” Alec says to Magnus holding out his gun. Magnus doesn’t question him taking the weapon and unholstering his own empty one and placing it in Alec’s hand.
“Shoot high and cover me,” he says not bothering with a countdown knowing Magnus will know exactly when to take his shot. He moves from his safe spot behind the chair immediately staying low.
The guard shifts just slightly from his perfectly shielded position taking his final shot at Alec just a shy too wide. Magnus takes that as his queue just as Alec’s about to reach the doorway shooting once high into the wall roughly right above the guard’s head startling him into a crouch.
When he stands to his full height Alec’s right in front of him waiting with a big smile.
“Hi,” he says with a large grin raising the base of his gun and smacking it into the center of the guy’s forehead hard just once knocking him fully unconscious.
Magnus sidles up behind him standing up on his toes just a bit to look over his shoulder at the unconscious man.
“Technically you missed,” Alec says turning to look at him over his shoulder. Magnus chuckles.
“You told me to, I was just being a good husband and listening,” he says holstering the empty weapon. “We should go find the warrant.”
Alec nods pointing over to a wooden barrel tilted up against the side of the house. Magnus gives him a ‘you’ve got to be kidding me look’ before walking over to the barrel kicking it once dislodging the lid as it goes down.
And out comes tumbling the mark with a high-pitched screech.
“No tracks?” Magnus asks gesturing to the clear sand before them guessing that’s how Alec knew he was in the barrel.
Alec shakes his head. “This one,” Alec explains pointing to the unconscious guard at his feet. “Shot his eyes over to that barrel right before I knocked him out cold, so either he really loves pickles or..”
“You should have hired better security,” Magnus says lifting the man up from the ground cuffing his hands together behind his back.
“Raj Laghari you are being taken into custody for six active level three warrants against you ranging from petty theft to extortion, you’ll be taken to the Rack where you will await further charges, trial or imprisonment as seen fit,” Magnus rattles off pushing the guy along in front of him.
Raj starts crying and Alec just rolls his eyes. This guy is an idiot, that much intel was right. They walk quietly back to their ship locking Raj up in the cargo hold before prepping the wavering nav to take them back to the Rack.
“I can’t believe you were going to try and call it off you know how it goes,” Magnus says tossing himself into the chair at the head of the ship. “The warrant is all.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Alec says casually, Magnus knows he’s loyal to the code even when he’s frustrated. One of these days a quick and easy job is going to be just that.
Alec slips into Magnus’ lap uncaring that he’s taller and that this chair is far too small to fit both of them comfortably.
“Fuck the nav system, we’re staying a full week at the Inn,” he says tiredly pressing a light kiss to Magnus’ temple.
“Hells yes,” Magnus says in glee kicking the nav switch with his foot before pulling Alec in for a proper kiss.

Samoth and Tyr (ex-Borknagar) Interview, 1999. Ft. Samoth being a massive cunt. Part Two.
Here’s the sequel to «Samoth and Tyr (ex-Borknagar) Interview, 1999. Ft. Samoth being a massive cunt. Part One».
I like to start these usually with some background information on the source, but any background information I could possibly offer was already inserted into the first part, you know? It doesn’t feel right to just copy-paste, or transcribe, something of someone else’s and post it online, even though I do it for free, and mostly for myself*. I still want to do something kind of creative with it. The proposed drinking game was probably about as creative as I could get with this though...
Okay, so! I actually saw Emperor live. I got to see them front row, in fact. It was a really good show— I’d love to see them play again.
Any possible commentary is in (parenthesis) and bold. Asterisks below and optional.
Without further ado:
I: Can you tell us anything concerning Thou Shalt Suffer? [Death metal band Thou Shalt Suffer can be seen as the predecessor to Emperor, having both Samoth (Samot) and Ishahn (Ygg) in its line-up. After the band split up, Ihsahn kept the name for his clasically inspired synthesizer project]
S: Yeah, well Ihsahn is still working on it and I mean it seems like an endless project. I don't know when he's actually going to finish it. He's been saying every year, like: "This year I'm going to finish it.", but it's still not finished. I have already heard a little bit, but he's always like, skipping material and making new songs, I really don't.... I'm just gonna check out the album when it's coming out, if ever*...
I: What about the former members, like Ildjarn? Is he still working on his own project, Ildjarn?
S: Well Ildjarn is... I see him now and then. He has a new band - it's a keyboard kind of thing - more atmospheric music, but I don't see him that much. He's a pretty weird guy. And our old drummer [Thorbjørn - ed] is actually our sound engineer for our latest album.
I: For a while you were in many different bands, for a short while - will you do that sort of thing again? Did you leave Emperor to join Burzum in '92?
S: I don't have the time anymore. At that point we had no drummer with Emperor and everything went really slow. So I just had to play something and I joined Satyricon and I played with Gorgoroth and stuff like that. It was just because things was going really slow with my main band. I've never left Emperor. All I did with Burzum was being in the studio for a few hours to do the bass and do drums.
I: About Arcturus - what do you think about their musical development? [Samoth used to play guitars in Arcturus a well. He recorded the legendary "Constellation" demo with this band, which was originally issued in 500 copies on MCD through NAP - later there was also issued a vinyl edition with three bonus tracks, namely the "My Angel" 7-inch and a re-recorded version of "Morax" - Samoth does not appear on these bonus-tracks]
S: I think it's excellent, especially... they made a remix album now a well of the previous album. there's a lot of weird beats and drum and bass samples on it. It's coming out in April, on Garm's label Jester, the same as Ulver.
I: I had heard that they had split up - is that correct?
S: Yeah, I think so, but I think they have been discussing about doing a new album, I mean, I don't know.. these guys are a bit slow...
I: In the "Reverence" video there is a line, "Honour commanded no longer as virtue*", it's part of the lyrics, but it's shown in words on the screen. Why? It seems like an unobvious statement for Emperor. You used to state that honour was really important.
S: It is important to have honour in what you do and it's important to honour and respect the people you ...respect.
I: Then it would be a virtue, wouldn't it?
S: Well... what was the line again? But it is Ihsahn's lyrics, so it would be better for him to explain it in a bigger complex, but I think it has to do with people not putting pride and honour in what they do anymore. People just don't care about nothing.
I: OK...In some earlier interviews you've shown a strong anti-christian attitude...
S: I still have an anti-christian attitude, but it's not something I think that much about these days, anymore. I don't really bother that much about Christians, they're not a big problem for me in my personal life. But to me it's just as normal as eating breakfast to be anti-christian, so I am*.
I: There have been times that you had more radical views, for example what did you want to achieve with the church burnings?
S: Well, I didn't want to achieve anything really. It was just like an extreme statement, I would think. I didn't think it would make any difference in society. It was a destructive act, both for me and everybody else in a way. Probably more for myself...
I: How did the jail sentence influence you as a person and as a musician?
S: Well, I had a lot of time to be for myself for once... But I think of the whole thing as a good experience. I think actually for a lot of people it could do good to be in prison for a while. It kind of puts your life into the good perspective and it's kind of interesting to see life from a different perspective. To be in prison it was totally meaningless - that's the whole point of being in prison: to take away the joy of life and lock you in for a time.
T: You made the instrumental (below) in prison.
S: Yeah, "The Wanderer" from "Anthems...", that was made in prison. And that's completely different from what I usually write.
I: You had a guitar in prison?
S: Yeah, sure.
I: I thought they weren't allowed, because you could hang yourself...
S: No, it was not that extreme...
I: So we might expect more Dissection material as well - as Jon Nödveidt is allowed to have a guitar in prison. What do you think about this whole case?
S: I think it was really stupid actually, because Dissection really had something going. They even had the studio booked and the material finished... and he just had to do this...
I: Do you feel any remorse about the churches and stuff?
S: No.
I: Do you feel any remorse at all about things you do in life?
S: I mean, I do have feelings of course, but I don't see any point to regret the things I did. I'd rather see it as an experience and learn from an experience rather than "Oh, why did I do that - if I would have done differently..." there's no point. (In other words: no.)
I: It's not some code of honour not to feel remorse?
S: No. It's just a waste of time to feel remorse. I see no point in it to regret the things I've done. I mean you just bring yourself down by feeling too much remorse. What happens, happens - you can't change the past, so.
I: In an interview you made this statement that "you have to be a ruler and think for yourself" and in an interview with your wife Nebelhexe*, she made this statement that the Count had had this big influence on you and that he had got you involved in the church burnings - how do these statements match?
S: Back in '91 and '92 all the people in the so called Black Metal Circle or whatever, were pretty young, so we all were pretty easily influenced. And Vikernes was also very influenced by Euronymous, in the first place. So I think a lot of the stuff that happened back then.. it was like: everybody had extreme ideas and everybody just wanted to be more and more extreme and we all got influenced by each other. And of course Vikernes, he has a very strong personality and he was the one who started with all the extremes, like actually going out and doing it in practice, so I guess he was influential to a lot of peolpe.
I: Was it an important reason to join Burzum - because you were looking up to him?
S: Well I mean, I respected Burzum and I saw this like an honour to join something I respected, but it was not: Wow, I'm playing with Varg Vikernes or something.
I: Are you still in touch with Mortiis? His departure from Emperor wasn't completely 'as friends'...
S: Yeah, he's been living in Sweden for many years, actually. I don't see him often, but his parents are just living a few blocks away. We phone now and then, and the whole is coming along just fine. Concerning his departure, he had a bit of an attitude back the, I guess. And he and Faust also didn't get along that well so it was best thet he would leave and for a while it was maybe a bit touchy, but now it's completely good.
I: What about your future plans?
S: Well the most immediate future plans is to finish this tour and we have a gig in Norway in May and hopefully we're going to do some more Scandinavian shows in Sweden and Finland...We have an offer for the Dynamo-festival in Holland as well, but I mean so far... I would like to - I wanna play a lot more live, but I mean, not everybody in the band is too keen on playing live, so we have to make comprimises. So we are probably going to do an American tour in the summer for three weeks with Dimmu Borgir - that should be a good experience I think. We' re starting to do pretty well in America as well now.
I: Comparing your first gig in Holland in 'de Baroeg' in Rotterdam and the one tonight, I think you have really improved a lot. What do you think yourself?
S: Well that's good to hear. We can still improve a lot I think. I mean when I watch these guys of Morbid Angel, I go: 'Wow, these guys are really good.' I just hope we get the opportunity to play more live and I don't know, improve our live act.
I: Goals for the future?
S: That's difficult. With Emperor we usually make the material for one album and we don't think too much ahead. The latest album has been doing well like all albums and better than expected. In the beginning I guess and we try to support the album by playing live and get more professional. So for the new album we have no new material, really nothing... and Ihsahn is also pretty busy with Peccatum and Thou Shalt Suffer. Peccatum will start working on their 2nd album when the tour is finished.
I: What do you think of Peccatum?
S: I think it's a good album, but I mean it's not an album I wanna play myself on. I think it could have been a lot better with a much stronger production. The production is weak.
T: I think it's... the drum copmuter, I prefer the live drummer feel.
S: Limbonic Art is a band in which I like the use of a drum computer. They do it in a special way. They don't pretend, like... they don't to try to get it to sound like a real drums, they just use the opportunities they have with a drum machine.
T: ...[about Peccatum again] but I still like their live performances. The theatrical style...
S: Yeah, I think Peccatum is actually better live than on CD*.
T: Better singing... more powerful.
I: They have this session guitarist. Didn't Ihsahn consider you to play the guitar for Peccatum?
S: No.
I: You wouldn't want to do it?
S: Well, I'm not sure if I could do it. I mean some of the stuff is pretty like... technical. I am not adepted to all this technical stuff. I think Peccatum is more technical than Emperor actually.
I: There have been a number of books coming out lately about the years 92-93, like for example "The Lords of Chaos" - is there basically any truth in these books?
S: Well I mean, "The Lords of Chaos" there is some truth in it of course, but I think that book emphasizes a lot on right-wing side of the whole thing - there is a lot of Varg Vikernes in there and also the author [Michael Monian], he is very interested in the political thing. I think he made the black metal thing look much more political then it ever was. Yeah, I can understand that to the outside world, it nearly sounds like mythology, of course - for a young teenager who gets this book it's like: "Wow, this is amazing..", but to me it's like no big deal. I don't think that much about it. People expect me to wake up in the morning and think about this stuff all the time, but I mean it happened many, many years ago...
I: But you wouldn't want the whole scene to turn back again to like it was back then?
S: No, I mean the whole scene has changed and I think people think more individually these days and just do what they feel like and are more honest about themselves and I think that's a good progression. I think it's a bit stupid to think that, "now we are grown up and are descent guys" - that'd seem silly in a way, but I mean back then we were very young and it was kind of obvious that we would have to change. You don't stay eighteen forever. But I am totally respectful to Darkthrone who still represent the essence of true Norwegian black metal, I guess.
I: What is Darkthrone doing these days then? Isn't Fenriz to busy with his other activities - I heard his deejay-ing in some club?
S: I think they actually are getting back together and doing an album this spring. They even have booked a studio and anything. It's true, he's deejay-ing, but he's changing all the time so all of a sudden is like: "OK, we're doing a Darkthrone album now and that's what I do."
I: What is it with all the cover albums you're participating on? Is it just good fun?
S: Well, we get so many offers. So we say like: OK. We have plenty more offers as well, so we just thought like.. when we were in the studio for the new album we recorded a Mayhem one, we did the Thorns vs Emperor, we did a Darkthrone one, so when we are in the studio it's no big deal to just do a cover as well.
I: I also heard you tried out the new studio by recording over tracks. Was the Hellhammer track the first to be recorded there?
S: Yeah it was kind of like that in a way to check out the studio and make sure it was good enough. No, the Hellhammer song wasn't recorded there. It was recorded in our old rehearsing room, just on a four track recorder. We just did that on an evening, we didn't even have a drummer at the time - we just had a guy from Gehenna [Dirge Rep, ed], coming down for a weekend and we said, OK let's do a cover, now and we just did it and they put it out.
I: What do you think of the fact that bands from Italy and France are using Norwegian lyrics?
S: Well. I think it's pretty comical.
I: Do they make sense?
S: Well most of the time they don't make sense. A lot of these countries have quite interesting mythology themselves, so why not use those?
I: Any small bands you could recommend us?
S: There is one called the Myrkskog - they've just signed to Candlelight now actually and they are a pretty good band. [Their guitarist was playing live as a session member with Peccatum, ed]
I: Is there anything you would like to add before closing off?
S: Not really... these carrots are good, that's my final comment! (God, this is so cute but I don’t know why)
T: Not really, no - Just that I love to be on tour and stuff like that... Before I joined with Emperor I had just played out for five times, or something...
  That’s all! :)
*I do it because I’ve noticed how many great interviews I’ve lost over the years, due to websites being taken down, or something. Whilst some interviews have been re-shared over numerous platforms and accounts, I like to have my own copy because I know nothing will happen to it. The reason I share it is because I might as well, since I have nothing better to do.
*The mythical ‘Thou Shalt Suffer’ album was released— a year later, in fact. Ihsahn had been talking about it in interviews all the way back in ‘96 too. It’s called ‘Somnium’. It’s not my thing, to be honest. However, I think it’s nice that Samoth let Ihsahn keep the name. ‘Into The Woods of Belial’ was cool though.
*This is such a ridiculous question. It’s very obvious what Ihsahn meant and I feel as though Samoth must’ve been distracted if he was unable to answer it. It’s the latter half of the lyrics that stands to be questioned. 3:17 for lyric, though you’ve likely heard it before: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4FYwz2-_G_4
*I have this strange mental image of Samoth just casually eating cereal with milk that he dyed red with food colouring......
*Funny enough, they divorced a little after this interview too— around the next two years or so, I don’t know exactly when. Samoth later goes on to marry his girlfriend, who was a photographer whilst he was touring with Zyklon back in 2001. In an interview (which no longer exists, unfortunately) Nebelhexe goes on to make a few comments that make it sound like a certain somebody may have had his fingers in a few too many pots....
*The thing about some bands sounding better live than on CD is really true! I once saw this band, ‘Havok’, live (I was at a metal music festival) and I thought they were incredible, but when I listened to their studio releases, I thought it was very weak and boring.
Legal disclaimer: I am not, in anyway shape or form, claiming that Samoth literally cheated on his wife. What I am, however, saying, is that it’s very sus from my very narrow field of vision. This is just a bit of comedy. However, if you are Samoth, or a representative of Samoth, feel to sue me regardless. Please, daddy, it’s all I’ve ever wanted since I was fifteen. I’ll do anything, daddy, ruin my fucking life— take a chainsaw and literally RIP MY FUCKING GUTS— okay, I’ll stop now before anybody thinks I’m being serious.

song: Animal I Have Become - Three Days Grace
So what if you can see the darkest side of me? No one will ever change this animal I have become. Help me believe it’s not the real me
Tumblr media
The first sign that startled you was during a dinner for two you had shared in his penthouse. While you were making conversation, he excused himself to bring another bottle of wine. That was when you realized he had emptied a bottle of wine by himself. His speech wasn’t slurred, his hand movement still practised and elegant when he eventually sent you out for the night. You let that slide, thinking he must have a higher tolerance to alcohol than you did, considering you hadn’t even finished your glass.
But then Jaehee had texted you out of the blue, confessing she had found an empty bottle of wine on the floor of Jumin’s car. Driver Kim made it sure to clean it every day after dropping Jumin home, so someone must have drank it the same day she found it. Taking into consideration the only person who had rode that car was her boss and it was only 10 am, she couldn’t help but get concerned.
You asked Jaehee to send Jumin away for at least half an hour while you searched inside his office. She did as told and guarded the door while you looked around. Aside from the photo of V, Rika and Jumin that made your heart clench due to everything that went down the past year, there wasn’t anything out of the blue. You sat on his chair and kicked the desk in frustration. A cling noise made you alert. You had checked the drawers and it was only filled with papers, where was that noise coming from? A few minutes later, you found a false bottom drawer, were there were at least five wine bottled hidden from sight. You left everything as you found it and then quietly left his office, telling Jaehee you would get back to her later. You wanted to confront Jumin by yourself, at least for the first time.
Jumin was, according to your quick online research, a functioning alcoholic. C&R was rising even when its resources had been used to the fight against Mint Eye. But ever since Jihyun had gone away, you could tell Jumin had changed. The news they couldn’t find a body in Rika’s apartment and Jumin’s failure to arrest the members of Mint Eye had taken a toll on him and now you felt dumb for not noticing his hobby had turned into an addiction. That’s why you decided to wait for him in his penthouse until he came back from work. As soon as you heard the door opening, you knew you were coming into a war. But it was all worth it if you could save him.
Jumin had never looked so distraught and furious when you told him he seemed to have an alcohol problem. He repeated it was just wine, and only the best kind. He mentioned C&R was doing great and he never missed any of his work meetings. He didn’t seem to listen to any word you were saying, angrily giving you evidence that he was fine, even if you knew he wasn’t. You took few steps until you were inches away from his face and inhaled deeply.
“Jumin, your breath stinks of alcohol. And it’s 6 pm on a Tuesday. How much have you drunk today?”
“I’m fine, why do you keep--”
“How much, Jumin?” you insisted. Jumin’s expression faltered and looked away from your face. After accepting you weren’t going to get an answer, you sighed. “Yeah. I figured that much”
“What do you want from me? I am doing what I can. C&R was in danger after the incident with Mint Eye and now we’re rising again. I don’t know why it’s a problem”
“It’s a problem because everyone relied on you. Me included. I…” you sighed. “You were the one in charge the intelligence unit. You were the one who lost your two best friends in the span of six months. And now you’re supposed to lead your company back to the top. The only problem there is that you’re doing it on your own.”
“What else am I supposed to do?” he asked, with a tired expression.
“Let me help” you said, taking Jumin’s hand and squeezing it. You weren’t sure if he actually blushed or it was just the warm colors from the sunset outside the penthouse’s windows.
“You know about management?” Jumin asked, this time his voice much softer and with a hint of humour that made you smile. You let go of his hand and put a strand of hair behind your ear.
“I don’t, sorry. But I do want to be by your side through all this. I’ve been told I’m good at being supportive” you shrugged. Jumin smiled softly and you felt like you could breathe again. You closed the space between the two of you and hugged him, burying your face on the crook of his neck. Even if he did smell like alcohol, his perfume definitely made up for it.
Suddenly, you felt him tense again and before you could ask, he put his hands on your shoulders and pushed you away. You furrowed your eyebrows.
“You shouldn’t do that, it’s not proper. You’re waiting for Jihyun” he reminded you with a stern voice. You took his hands off your shoulders but didn’t try to take his hand again. Crossing your arms in front of your chest, you looked at him.
“Yeah” you sighed “Kind of? I mean, I really hope he’s okay wherever he is. But it’s been a year and we only knew each other for eleven days. I care about Jihyun a lot, sure... But this isn’t about him? You’ve been a good friend to me these past year. And not only to me, but to everyone else at the RFA as well. So if he decides to return, I’ll celebrate his recovery, really. But I’m no longer… waiting for him, I guess” you shrugged.
Jumin stayed in silence for what it felt an eternity. You certainly weren’t expecting that topic to come up when you decided to confront Jumin about his drinking. You may or may have not had been experiencing different kind of feelings whenever you two had friendly dinner dates, but had refused to act on it, knowing your past history with Jihyun would make it complicated for him, even if you had stopped receiving letters for the past four months. But some days, whenever Jumin chuckled at one of your jokes, you were hopeful. Maybe, one day…
No. Not now.
“You don’t have to think about that now” you assured him, scratching the back of your head. “Right now, we should just focus on you. Maybe we could start by setting an appointment with a therapist? Then we can go from there” you suggested.
Jumin took a deep breath and looked back at you once more. He cracked up the tiniest of smiles and nodded. Good. You both could figure out where to go next, as long as he knew he didn’t have to do things alone anymore.

Must Have Been the Wind
Hey guys! I kinda already posted this on my ao3 a few months ago and just realized I forgot to post it here as well so like, here you go I guess lmao
Summary: Remus goes back to his apartment and wants a nap after a bad day at work. Instead, he finds he is kept up by some very troubling sounds coming from the room above his.Remus decides he wants to help this stranger.
Song fic! Must Have Been the Wind - Alec Benjamin
CW: Cursing, and uh, Remus being Remus ig? Oh, and minor homophobic character (Lemme know if I need to add more)
Proof-read by @queroze, thank you again, even though this was a while ago lol
Remus let out a huff of breath, feeling his tense muscles relax as he practically melded into the couch. The plan was for him to catch a nice nap after his exhausting day at work.
   He was a barista at a coffee shop, which usually wasn’t too bad. He liked his job. Often, he even found it relaxing.
   However, there can be days that are just the exact opposite of relaxing.
   It seemed as though every customer he came across that day woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Oh, and don’t even get him started on the Karens. The Karens were nearly impossible to deal with.
   A frown slipped on his face, recounting the worst part of his day. There was a very verbal homophobe who came in today.
   Remus was very openly gay and always wore a pride pin on his apron next to his name. He had the unfortunate luck of having to take, and make his order. He probably had to stand there for a full 5 minutes, just listening to his lecture about how wrong gay sex is. Remus was able to shut him up by reminding him of the line behind him.
   It didn’t end there though.
   A lesbian couple walked in not long later, hand in hand. It didn’t take long for it to catch the attention of this man, who immediately jumped at the chance to pull another 500 slide PowerPoint out of his ass.
   The rest of his co-workers decided that he had to be ushered out of the shop. Nothing about getting him to leave was easy though, not in the slightest. He went out yelling and cursing the whole way.
    The two girls were very lovely though, they had a nice conversation about the upcoming pride event, and he was more than happy to give them both free refills on him.
    So he guessed the day wasn’t all bad, but it still seemed to drag him out as if he was dough under a roller, crunching off of his bones into powder and flattening all his veins against his skin.
     Yes, a nap seems like a good idea.
     Remus’s eyes fluttered closed, fatigue quickly overtaking his body.
   Just then, a sharp, yet muffled noise cut through the serenity of silence.
   Some barely-conscious part of his mind gained interest in this sound.
   What was that? It kind of sounded like glass.  It had murmured through its TV static atmosphere.
   The rest of his mind, nearly completely asleep, wordlessly communicated that it was probably nothing, and he should just focus on sleeping.
   That seemed to calm his brain enough to settle down.
There was a little sliver of his mind that wasn’t quite ready to let go of the sound yet, though. It kept listening, even if undetected by the rest of the brain. It seemed right to do so, as muffled sounds of yelling and sobbing registered through its cloudy state.
   It was then Remus blearily pried his eyelids open and sat up.
   The fuck?  Remus groaned internally, forcing his body into an acceptable sitting position. Confusion stuck onto his brain like wrinkled cling wrap as he tried to make any sense of the hazy world around him.
   A loud thud was heard from the floor above, followed by an emotionally drained cry.
   Remus grunted and rubbed his eyes in exhaustion.
   For maybe just a split second, his heart felt sympathy for the person, but he was just so tired. It’s not like it was his problem, right? He could just ignore it and go back to sleep.
   He flipped over on his side so his head faced the back of his sickly green couch and closed his eyes, trying his best to draw his attention away from the sounds upstairs.
   He must have laid there for a good while, trying and failing to push the sounds to the back of his head, his anxiety amping up little by little the longer the crying persisted.
   Eventually, Remus let out a loud, guttural sigh and stood up swiftly. He couldn’t just ignore them, he had to help.
   Making the decision, he walked towards his coat-rack and hastily tossed his jacket over his shoulders, bee-lining to the elevator.
   He silently curses the elevator for being so slow as he restlessly waited for the doors to push open, and when they do he wasted no time getting in and selecting floor 2.
   Remus usually enjoyed the tacky elevator music, but he found it only served to tick him off this time around. The music seemed to drag time out even slower and he was already so, so restless.
   Ding.
   With that, he stepped out and eagerly trodded down the hallways, stopping in front of the desired location. He raised a hand and knocked on the door with little hesitation, the anxious tapping of his foot echoed within the empty halls.
   Remus listened with rapt attention through the door, hearing as the person inside scrambled to make themself look even the slightest bit presentable.
   He waited impatiently, his gaze anxiously wandering around for some sort of distraction or stimulation. They landed on the grossly patterned navy blue carpet, look completed by the numerous stains that have accumulated over the years. Finding little interest there, he moved onto the walls. The dim, sparse lighting made the colour look like a shit brown. Impulsively, he reached to run his fingers along the many indents that found a home among the distasteful brown. The tactile stimulation instantly captured his focus, and he let the rough surface soothe him.
   Remus, too caught up in the stimulation, had forgotten his original purpose of being there. He startled back to reality upon hearing the soft click from the door. He immediately snapped his head back up, being met with a pair of mismatched eyes and a scarred face. This person was looking up at him with what he thought was supposed to be a confident expression. The effect was dampened by his pink-ish eyes, mussed hair, and the pastel yellow sweater he had hooked all the way up to his chin.
   Remus gave the other a small wave, just then realizing he had no game plan. Did he just… ask? Did he make small talk first? Should he invite him to his coffee shop for a drink and talk there?
   The other reciprocated the wave, smirking. “How may I help you, sir?” He asked politely
   Remus cleared his throat, deciding he should just be direct with this conversation. He was never really good at softening his approach anyway.
   “Hey, so, basically I heard something shatter and a lot of crying and yelling and I was kinda concerned about it, so I came to ask if you were ok.”
   The two men stared at each other for a few seconds before Remus spoke up again. “So, are you ok?”
   He heard the other snicker quietly, a gloved hand waving as if to dismiss the question. “Oh, my. That’s ridiculous. Your ears must be playing tricks on you, my dear.”
   Remus took notice of how he subtly buried his face deeper into the sweater.
   His attention was brought back up as the scarred man spoke again.
   “Thank you for caring, sir, it’s very kind of you, but I have some urgent work to get back to. I wish I could tell you about the noise, but I'm afraid I didn’t hear a thing.” He shook his head. “Perhaps it was merely a harsh gust of wind.” He suggested.
   Remus let out a quiet sigh, but nodded and accepted the answer.
   The two waved each other farewell as Remus trudged back to the elevator.
Remus had been laying down, back pressed hard against the cold concrete of the floor. The chill from beneath seeped in through his spine and into his chest, weighing him down heavily. He just couldn’t stop thinking about his upstairs neighbor.
   It had been hours since his last visit already, and the man upstairs was still pacing across his apartment, occasionally he would stop and silence would follow. The pacing always started back up though.
   Absent-mindedly, his hands fiddled with the necklace around his neck, running his fingers across the cool, smooth metal.
   He just couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong, and he wanted to help.
   Remus knew that he didn’t have all the facts, and he didn’t really want to intrude on the man’s life. There was a possibility that nothing was wrong, and he was  just imagining things. He didn’t want to pester his neighbor with his stupid, false worries.
   But what if something is wrong?   You saw his puffy eyes. You know you heard those sounds.  His mind kept telling him.  You can’t just leave him alone, can you?
   Remus nodded to himself and for the second time that day, stood and made his way back to the other’s door. More hesitantly this time, he knocked. His raps were slow and unsure as he swayed nervously from side-to-side.
   He heard the pacing stop, and he waited, his focus on nothing but his shoes this time around. Then he heard footsteps approach the door and he looked up just as the door swung open.
   He was met with the same mismatched eyes, messy hair, and sweater. He didn't forget to take note of the new eye bags and odor he’s sporting with him though.
   “Oh, it’s you again.” the nervousness of his neighbor's voice managed to carry through despite the fabric covering his mouth.
   Remus ran a hand through his hair and looked to the side. “Yeah.” he chuckled unsurely.
   “I just- I’m still worried,” he said, smile falling. “I know you said you were fine, but… I just felt the need to check again. It’s- those sounds- they’re not leaving me alone.” he tentatively looked up into the other’s eyes. Are- Are you sure you’re ok?”
   Remus is pretty sure he saw the scarred side of his face twitch, probably in annoyance he’s sure. He knew it was a bad idea to come back up. He was always such a bother, even to his own family. What made him think a stranger would appreciate seeing his face twice in one day?
   “Yes.” the answer cut through Remus’s thoughts and redirected his attention. “I am absolutely positive that everything’s fine.” There was a hint of irritation that Remus desperately wished he didn’t hear.
   “Once again, thank you for caring, it’s very kind. Truly. But I really do have some urgent work to get back to. I wish I could help you with the noise, but I didn’t hear a thing. In fact, I’m almost certain it was just the wind. You need to stop worrying so much over such a trivial thing.”
   Remus’s body became hot with shame as he shrunk in on himself. He nodded at the man before he sluggishly made his way back.
The following morning, he didn’t even bother with breakfast. Immediately going over to slouch on his couch, he stared back up at the ceiling. It seemed to be a new favourite hobby of his apparently.
   He had a lot of time to think about the previous night, about his last interaction with the man upstairs.
    There was no way those sounds were from his imagination. He was in a groggy state when he heard the yelling, sure, but surely the pacing wasn't something his ears made up. Surely, the messy hair and puffy eyes weren't something his eyes made up.
   His mind carefully brought up the idea of confronting him again, but he quickly winced and scrapped the idea. The irritated voice of the other causing his gut to lurch in a nauseating way.
   He was most certainly not going to be looking him in the eyes for a good while now.
   He was starting to break through the surface though, right? Maybe he should just call it quits and admit that he can't help.
   He couldn't just go back up again, he didn't think he could take the ice-cold, biting irritation again.
   Remus sat, rolling the interactions over in his head. Whoever said anything about a letter?  A lightbulb sparked, setting an explosion through his body that jolted him up from his seat with a gasp.
   "A letter! That's so simple! I don't have to face him again, and he doesn't have to feel as much pressure! I'm a fucking genius!" He yelled, pumping his fists into the air with triumphant gusto.
He rushed over to his desk, brimming with excitement as he began to write.
   In Remus's very distinct, messily scrawled printing, he began:
   Sup Mr Scarface! (I haven't even thought to ask your name yet lmao)
   Listen up nerd! I  promise  I'm not playing tricks on you when I say this
   You’re  always  welcome to come in
   You could stay here for an hour or two if you ever need a friend. We can talk about the noise when you’re ready
   But… til then I’ll say it must have been the wind.
   Yours sincerely, annoying dude from yesterday ;)
   Remus let out a long, pleased sigh as he gave it a quick once-over. He saw many mistakes, but he gave them not even a second glance before he was already out of the door.
   He was going to deliver this letter and it was going to be wonderful!
Remus shucked his jacket off and onto his coat-rack upon returning from work the following day. It had been a pretty good day today. No awful homophobes, that's for sure.
   Turning his T.V. on for background noise, he moved over to his miniature kitchen. Distantly aware of a news reporter talking about some murder, he got started on his rice and gravy.
   Perhaps 10 minutes passed by when he heard a gentle rapping on the front door.
   Remus curiously strode over and opened his door, surprised to see the man from upstairs in front of him.
   "Oh, wow. Hey there, dude! Didn't expect to actually see ya this soon!" Remus exclaims.
   "I, uh, yeah…" the scarred man shifted in place for a few moments, burying his face into his sweater. "If the, uh, offer is still open, I’d love to have someone to talk to,” he mumbled through the thick fabric.
   Remus stood and processed the words for a few seconds before grinning widely.
   "Of course! Of course! Come on in, my man! Lunch will be done in a bit if you want some!”
   The other smiled and shyly slunk into his apartment
   "I’d love that.” He said. “Thank you.”
   "Not a problem at all! My name's Remus by the way!" He excitedly extended a hand for the other to shake.
   Said man looked at his hand for a moment or two before carefully clasping his own around it.
   Even more carefully, his shy voice spilled a simple name. "...Janus."

He Shines Like the Sun (Hinata x Reader)
Fake Dating Trope for my 500 Follower Event! Requested by @thejoystickofaps4 I hope I did your sunshine boy justice <3
You were busy making sure everything was stocked in your medkit. For a professional team, a few of the players on your team were notoriously injury-prone. One in particular… At least your job was never dull.
 Speak of the devil, and he shall appear, it seemed. As soon as your kit was restocked, your primary patient was standing at the door. He seemed even more nervous than usual, prompting you to usher him in and immediately look for the source of his discomfort. You didn't understand, you had attended all of practice, and for once, he was avoiding the stray balls and not diving into bleachers. The moment your eyes left him, he must have run into something. The more you looked him over, the less you saw, save for his rapidly reddening face.
"What's wrong, Hinata?" You pressed a hand to his forehead, "Are you feeling feverish." He finally waved his hands in front of him, stopping your prodding.
 “N-no… nothing like that, I’m fine.” His voice was high-pitched, making you giggle.
 “Then what’s up?” You allowed yourself to relax, happy to not have to stay late patching up Hinata again.
 “I, uh… I have a high school reunion this weekend.” You nodded, not following. “And some of the guys were teasing me for never bringing anyone, so I told them I had a girlfriend.” He chuckled nervously.
 “Congrats! I didn’t know you were dating anyone.” You smiled, trying to forget the growing crush you had on him. He was just too bright, so compelling. It made him hard to resist.
 “That’s the thing,” You watched him scratch at his neck, avoiding your gaze. “I don’t… would you? Would you mind coming with me?” Your heart fluttered, despite the warnings your head yelled out.
 “Yeah, I wouldn’t mind pretending, if that’s what you need.” Hinata froze for a moment before releasing the breath he was holding.
 “Thanks, you’re a life-saver!” He cheered, turning to head out the door. Although his voice was cheerful, you couldn’t help but think you had said something wrong. “I’ll message the details to you. Later!”
 Just like a whirlwind, he disappeared just as fast as he appeared. You stood, pouting as you thought over the weird conversation before shaking it from your head. With a last look to double-check that everything was in place, you turned off the light and locked the door behind you. You had to prepare for this weekend.
  You had probably spent too much time getting ready. Looking at your reflection showed someone vastly different than who you were at work, and you wondered if Hinata would even recognize you. Maybe it was too much?
 Before you were able to question it too much, a knock resounded from your front door. Hinata stood on your stoop, looking like he was about to be ill before his eyes fell to you. You swore you could see the sparkle in his eyes as he took you in.
 "You look amazing!" His cheer startled you, a giggle escaping from your lips unbidden. You thanked him softly, taking his arm when he offered. He looked good too, finally out of his jersey or the sweats he wore to and from home. His jeans looked a little rough, but in a flattering way, and you couldn't help but appreciate the button-up he wore with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows.
 The drive passed in awkward silence, and you were more than happy to see the banner for the five-year reunion come in to view. You took a moment to breathe in the crisp air, and Hinata joined you, looping a shaky arm around your waist. The warmth of his arm sunk into the thin material separating you, and you fought to keep your heart steady. Of course, Hinata would be touching you like this, you needed to sell it.
 The noise rose considerably as you entered the building. It seemed as if you were a bit late, but it didn’t bother Hinata. You passed a few people who waved at Hinata, and he waved back with a smile, moving further with his hand leading you. He walked past most of his former classmates, stopping only when a silvered-haired man stood to wave him over to their table.
 The next few minutes were filled with introductions, Hinata's hand staying firmly planted on the small of your back. Apparently, whenever there was a reunion for one class, the rest of the Karasuno Volleyball Club would crash. The two introduced as Nishinoya and Tanaka were especially excited to meet you, and you figured that it was probably one of those two that teased Hinata so much that he asked for your help.
 They helped distract you for a moment, helped you forget that it was all fake, but the moment you looked toward Hinata, all the blood rushed to your face. He was so close, tucking you into his side. He met your eyes questioningly, seemingly noticing the closeness as you had. You had done so well until then, and now the two of you were looking away with flushed faces. A few snickers and laughs rose from the people around you, but you watched the tall blonde- Tsukishima- raise an eyebrow at you, smirking like he knew your secret.
 “Hey Hinata, are you two really dating?” You tensed, clutching to Hinata’s shirt as Kageyama stood in front of you. You could feel Hinata shake underneath your touch.
 “Y-yeah!” Kageyama scrutinized the both of you, looking for any signs that Hinata was lying. Your heart raced, and the only thing you could think to do was hide your face in Hinata’s shoulder with a whine. His arms wrapped around you hesitantly, drawing you closer to his chest.
 “Oh, I get it! This must be your guy’s first date, huh?” Kageyama seemed satisfied at his deduction, simply walking away to find a drink. You let a sigh loose against Hinata’s collar, eventually stepping away when your embarrassment at the closeness overcame that of the prior scrutiny.
 The night seemed to fly by after that. Hinata really came alive with his friends, and it was hard to resist being pulled in by their excitable personalities. Yet Tsukishima’s gaze rarely left you, sending an anxious shiver down your spine every time you caught it.
 “Hey Hinata, come with me for a minute!” Suga, the one that had waved you over earlier in the night, took Hinata from your grasp before you could refute, leaving you to the mercy of his friends.
 “So how did you two meet?” Daichi, he seemed sweet, asked.
 "Oh, well, I'm the medic for his team." This seemed to catch their attention, almost every head snapping in your direction.
 “The medic? As in the medic? The one he never shuts up about?” Nishinoya cheered next to you, dragging you further into confusion.
 “Well, I’m the only medic, so I guess?” Tanaka and Noya high-fived, and although you appreciated their enthusiasm, you were desperate to avoid any further questions.
 “I’ll be right back!” You slipped away as they tried to calm Tanaka and Noya, passing Tsukishima as he gave you a mischievous smirk.
 Hinata, where was Hinata? You followed the signs for the bathroom out to a quiet hallway. He hadn’t been in the main room as far as you could see, so this was your best bet.
 “What do you mean you’re not dating?” The incredulous tone of Suga’s voice froze you in your spot. They must be right around the corner.
 “Well, I did what you told me to and told her about the reunion, but then I said I told you guys I had a girlfriend, and she offered to come with to pretend to be my girlfriend… So I just agreed? At least she came this way!” You winced as you heard the thump, hoping Suga was merciful enough to not smack him anywhere visible.
 “Why didn’t you just say you wanted it to be a date? A real date?” When the other guys described Suga as the mom-friend, they weren’t kidding. You hadn’t heard a more disappointed Mom tone since you told your mom you weren’t continuing with your doctorate.
 "I got nervous…" You felt terrible, for suggesting the fake date and listening to a conversation you were obviously not supposed to hear. And so you stepped out into their sight. Both men froze, giving you mildly alarmed smiles.
 “I’ll just let you two talk it out. Don’t take too long, or one of the others will come looking.” Suga shot Hinata a glare, calming his expression to give you a gentle smile as he passed.
  You were alone, the noise softly drifting from the main room. “So, you didn’t want this to be a fake date?” Hinata shook his head, blushing. “You wanted it to be a real date?” He nodded, no longer looking at you. “And what would make it real?” You questioned with a smile.
 His face could light up a whole city. You hoped he would keep looking at you like that, for as long as you could stand it. After he was sure you weren’t joking, he took a shaky step. And then pounced.
 You were wrapped up in his arms, his excitement making the press of his lips against yours a little messier than you expected. But it was Hinata, your ball of accident-prone sunshine, and your first kiss with him was so perfectly him. You finally released your heart from its self-imposed cage, feeling the flutter echoed under your fingertips, braced against Hinata’s chest.
 The two of you wandered back to his friends, hand-in-hand, smiles big enough to hurt. The whole group seemed to sense the change between you, becoming even more boisterous. Even Tsukishima gave a genuine smile when he thought no one was looking.
 The floor cleared for dancing, and Tanaka and Noya wasted no time dragging you out to the make-shift dance floor. You were passed between them for a time, even enjoying being rescued by Suga for a few minutes while he twirled you over the hardwood floor. But when Hinata finally offered his hand to you, you gladly abandoned your dance partners, preferring to sway with your head nestled against Hinata's shoulder.

In Mystic Falls
Elijah finished his account of the battle against the Hundings for Sophie's Grimoire. Then he opened his diary. He had been doing some writing for days. This entry was of a more personal nature.
                ‘It is assumed that happiness is hard to capture. And how can one feel happy having lost so many dear people close to one's heart. Having existed now for more than a millenia, I can say with certainty that love is the driving force for all. The scars of the soul are mended with it, making it possible to look to another day, and I am witness to it. We are ruled by our fears and disbelief and it clouds our minds. Love is not a weakness but the ultimative strength.What would we be without love. I have allowed myself to believe in it. I have searched long enough for it. And it has been bestowed on me when I have least expected it. I have read a long time ago that one would know one's true love by the look in his or her eyes as they are the windows to one's soul. Maybe she is the one I was looking for all my life.'
He closed the diary as Elena came into the library.
"Hey" the doppelganger said joining the Original at the table.
"How are you? I saw Antoinette leave."
"I am fine. You?" Elijah replied.
"Went to the Wickery Bridge with Matt."
"You did?!" Elijah was somewhat surprised.
"Kind of needed closure. I don't know. My life changed twice there." "And did you get closure?"
Elena nodded a little. "I had dreams, thoughts about how my life would be. Whether to go to Whitmore or even New York, if I was going to move away after college. I wanted to study medicine like my-  father. And then -you know-things first changed when my parents died."
"And second time when you were told you were a doppelganger?! Your life was never going to be completely your own?!" Elijah concluded.
"No-but I made peace with it. It was especially weird talking about with Katherine! Both of us didn't really have a choice in the matter. You know, I get her." Elena said.
"Well, only you can say that." Elijah remarked.
"Klaus killed her parents as punishment for turning and disabling him from breaking the curse." "I know, Elena." Elijah sighed a little.
Flashback
At the Plantation house, near New Orleans
Elijah found Katherine at Damon's grave planting flowers. She got up as she saw him standing there.
"Hello" Elijah said.
"I thought we said all there is to say?!" Katherine said looking at him in a serious manner.
"Yes. But there is one thing I need to say. It's about Klaus."
Katherine sighed a little. "What about him?!"
"It's about me as well."
 The doppelganger looked at him calmly.
Elijah flashed back for a second to a moment 500 years ago when he had a conversation with her.
"What is it?" she now urged the Original to speak.
"There are no words that would lessen what we had done to you. But I want you to know that I recognize the pain we had caused you." Elijah said.
Katherine now turned the  look onto Damon's grave and then to Elijah.  "For more than 520 years I had one thing on my mind and that was finding a way to kill Klaus for having murdered my family. I have lied, cheated, manipulated, killed... all to survive and find a way to end him." Kathrine said, pausing for a moment.
She drew a deep breath and looked at Elijah poignantly, "We all have graves to visit now!"
Walking passed the Original vampire the brunette went her way to the house.
"I am sorry Katerina Petrova" Elijah muttered as he looked at her  walking away.
"I'm sorry. This was not easy" Elena said.
They agreed that they would all continue with a clean slate and leave the past behind.
"It's all right. You don't have to feel bad for bringing it up." Elijah said. "You also didn't have much choice- you didn't ask to be turned." Elena reminded the vampire of his disposition.
"Still, we had the choice of seeking humanity within us. We were not completely souless monsters."
"Choices-  yep!" Elena uttered.
"You miss Jeremy?!" "I do, but I have to respect his choices." Elena said with a little sigh and got up.
Suddenly they heard familiar voices coming from the disance. It was Rebekah arguing with Kol about him taking her supply of blood.
"Lable it then Rebekah's blood bag and maybe I won't touch it. Anyway, I hate cold blood!" Kol shot back at his sister.
"Why should I lable it- you should learn not to drink everything up and only think about number one-Kol!! Ugh, I wish I had that white oak ash dagger at times."
"And hello to you!" Elijah said as he opened the door for them.
"What brings you here?"
"May we not call on our brother?!" Rebekah said eyes still blazing angrily at Kol. "Of course you may. Still, has it occured to you that it might be best that you two get separate accomodation!" Elijah suggested.
"That is one reason why I came to see you," Rebekah said, "Stefan and I decided to leave MF! And I am hosting a farewell dinner-party! You are invited."
"Where are you going?" Elena enquired surprised to hear it as Stefan hadn't mentioned anything to her when they spoke earlier.
"England. We liked it there." Rebekah explained. "And you two are staying here for a guess?"
"For a little while longer." Elijah replied. Elena just added that she hadn’t decided what to do.
 It's time to dump this place!" Kol concluded.
"And where are you again?" Elena asked.
"Sophie's in New York. I will try to win her precious heart back"
"Good luck with that!" Elena remarked.
"She says she can't be with a vampire, but her goodbye kiss told me something entirely different!" Kol said.
"Keep telling yourself that" Rebekah turned to her brother still furious about the empty fridge she had encountered as she got up that morning.
To sway them from more bickering, Elijah changed the subject to the dinner party.
Elena's phone rang and she answered it. Bonnie wanted to meet her. "I will see you later." Elena said to them and left.
🍀
At the Grill
"Matt left, ha?!" Bonnie said.
"Everyone's leaving." Elena then told her about Stefan, Rebekah and Kol, as well as the dinner party.
"Dinner-party with the Original family?!" Bonnie then said still not being able to process the great gap of a year she had missed being locked away in the spirit world by the Hunding witches.
"It will be fine. They are already back on with the  bickering and I left Elijah to deal with them." Elena said.
"I will need loads of time to get used to it all.” Bonnie cocked an eyebrow and then got a chart out of her bag. “I found it among her Gram's books as I was trying to declutter. Read this!"
"Nova Scotia?!" Elena said as she took the map her witch friend handed it to her.
"Yes. Look at the name." Bonnie urged her friend to read on.
"Gwyn Mikaelson!" Elena read in the name written in runes and then looked at Bonnie amazed."This is weird. I don't get it?! There is another Mikaelson?!"
"I don't know what it is, but I guess one battle done, another mystery on horizon!" Bonnie said.
"One thing is for sure. It is never ends with the Mikaelson mysteries!" Elena said."can I take this?!"
"Be my guest. One thing is for sure, there is always something going on with the Mikaelsons!"
"Oh, yeah! New adventure here we come!" Elena exclaimed softly. Packing up the map and the books in the bags, they got up.
As the doppelganger got  into the car, she pressed Elijah's speedial number.
Hours later
Elijah, Kol and Rebekah, together with Elena, Stefan and Bonnie examined the map. They had Sophie Deveraux on loudspeaker.
"Gwyn Mikaelson," Rebekah said, 'tell me that she actually didn't die of plague and that this family has even darker secret in its closet!?"
Kol held the map in the hand. "There was nothing else in the Grimoire?" the Orignal said and  looked at Bonnie. "Nothing. Just this map put in it randomly." the witch replied.
"Well, how about we channel the Bennet witch line and try and dig some information out of them?" Sophie inserted.
"Let's."Bonnie said.
"So, when are you arriving in Mystic Falls?" Kol asked and everyone looked at him as the question was directed to Sophie.
"Not just yet. My witchy instincts are telling me I will see you in Nova Scotia?! Ok, you guys, I have to go now, but keep me posted." Sophie said and hung up.
Everyone could see that Kol was slightly hurt and peeved off and now moved away from the table. He tried to keep his emotions in check and not let disappointment burst into anger. Rebekah wanted to follow him, but Elijah suggested she let him be.
"So, that's it for now?!" Elena said getting up from the round table."or shall we get packing like Sophie suggested."
"I would pack, "Stefan said looking at Rebekah "I guess we are going to postpone England?!"
"Right. And I just hope it doesn't involve digging old witches up and some weird werewolves.
How come Eilif didn't say anything about Gwyn?"  Rebekah turned to her brother Elijah.
"I find it strange, too," Elijah said pensively,"but she left and it was a goodbye."
"I don't believe in goodbyes in this family. Something always comes up. Anyway, what secret do witches keep regarding our sister?!" Rebekah said taking the map in her hands,"secrets, secrets."
Bonnie now got up."Whatever it was it wasn't good. Ok, I am going to try and channel Grams and see if we can get any answers. See you later."
The witch took her books and went out of the room.
"You don't remember anything about anybody called Gwyn?" Elena directed the question to Elijah.
"Nothing that I can recall.” the Original replied.
"Mother did once say that there was a cousin born out of wedlock," Rebekah said.
”There is another Mikaelson out there - but - father had no brothers. I don’t understand. This does not make any sense.”
"I know."Rebekah uttered.
Elena looked at Elijah somewhat worried, but with great positivity in her voice "We will figure it out"
Elijah smiled a little. Her enthusiasm and optimism was always like the warm sun giving one strength to go on.

Flashback for readers
Nova Scotia, 995 AD
Three witches sat down around the small bonfire. They threw three rings into the fire chanting a spell.
"Always and forever" all three witches said in one voice.
Each of them then smeared their blood with sage, rosmary and thyme and threw it into the fire.
"The trinity of the sun, the moon and the earth is now sealed." one of the witches said.
As the fire subsided sometime after. They took the three rings from the ashes and put it on a young woman's body.
"Farewell, dear girl." they said crying, as they put the three herbs entwined on her head as a crown.
******
In New Orleans
"Jeremy...wake up!" Caroline said to poking Jeremy a bit with her finger.
"Ha...what?" the hunter murmured as he woke up looking at the blonde standing beside his bed.
"I told him to let you sleep." Klaus said sitting in one of the chairs by the window.
Jeremy rubbed his face and then his eyes.
"Tell me this is a nightmare...how...aren't you supposed to be locked away in some weird witchy void spirit world?!" Jeremy said referring to Klaus as he sat up.
"He kinda got released due to good behaviour. And I had something to do with it being a heroine for killing a weird-looking werewolf. Anyway, get up. you need to get to Elena and the others. Something weird is happening again. You have to tell them that they need to try and find Sigrid Mikaelson. That's all we know." Caroline said in her ghostly form.
"I thought it was too good to be true that I will have a life and not have to do any of the vampire-ghost relaying messages thing!!"Jeremy moaned.
"We have to go" Klaus said to Caroline.
"I want to stay here a little while longer"  Caroline said to the Original hybrid.
"We have to go, love" Klaus came up to the blonde.
Suddenly Jeremy could feel the surge of magic break.
"Caroline!" he called out, but the pair were gone.
"Great!" Jeremy said taking his phone dialing Elena's number, which went directly to voice mail.
*
Hours later, on the plane to Nova Scotia
Elena opnened her diary and wrote down, "I don't know what date it is anymore. Who cares. Here we are on the plane to Nova Scotia. Only a few months ago we fought off the Hunding werewolf clan, who tried to take over and kill the Original family.
I will not write about Elijah today. Because if I do, it will take pages and pages. It’s so complicated. Idk why. But it is. It’s like - we are friends, and then we are not. Idk what we are. Ugh I got to stop, cuz as I said it would be pages and pages and pages about me and Elijah - I just know that I - want to be with him. But he still has issues with stuff - like Tatia, Antoinette. Etc.
Oh....seems like there is a lot of ohs coming.
There was a lot going on in the last few months. Nothing is the same. And it is ok.
Now we are going to try to figure out if the mysterious map with the name of Gwyn Mikaelson really makes sense and if she is somewhere out there.
It's a new adventure. I must say that I am partly excited. Elijah, Rebekah and Kol are sort of anxious, although they would never admit it. The ancient Original thing being cool and all. We haven't got a clue what we will find, if anything. I just hope we don't dig something that will haunt us. But then again, I think we will. Like Bonnie said- ever since the Originals came into our lives, it is not boring.
I am glad Bonnie is with us, but it is still strange not having Caroline around. I miss her so much. And if there is any truth about her ghost being with Klaus' ghost, then it makes a bit easier to go on.
I don't want to think of my nightmare.
I will keep you up to date, dear diary.
Elena."

Reflection on Japanese Progress (so far)
I wanted to make something more coherent on my thoughts on how my japanese progress has gone lately, because in some ways its better than I expected. I think part of it has to do with better study methods being used right now compared to the first time I studied japanese, but another large part of it I think is my experience with chinese affecting my japanese.
Prior Japanese Progress (2.5 years)
When I first studied Japanese seriously I took 1 college class, then continued to self study. Generally 30 minutes to 1 hour per day, some weeks/months no study, sometimes more study. I studied like this for 2 years. Then the final portion, year 2 - 2.5, I immersed and studied more like 2 hours per day and that’s when I saw the fastest progress as far as milestones.
The reasons my progress went so slow up until year 2 are pretty clear to me. I had very little study time per day and japanese simply takes a lot more hours to hit milestones than french. The other thing slowing me down is that japanese has few cognates with english (compared to french).
When I read The Word Brain recently, it said for languages similar each other (like english/french) you need to learn around 5000 new words, and for less similar languages like chinese and japanese you need to learn 15,000. So for Japanese I needed to learn more words before I could hit the same milestones of “read a comic ok with a dictionary” or “read a comic comfortably without a dictionary” or “read the news with only occasional word lookups” etc. French having more cognates and similarities benefited me quickly - I could start reading comfortable with occassional dictionary look up (and follow the overall main idea fine) after learning ~500 words. For Japanese, I was expecting the same kind of results from a few hundred words when that wasn’t realistic.
I also remember I held myself back a lot with Japanese - I didn’t want to learn more words until I’d learned 1000+ kanji lol. Guess who never did. The closest I got was I borrowed a Tuttle book from the library and learned the meanings of 300 kanji. I tried Heisig’s RTK book and barely learned any, I never got past a couple hundred. I tried KKLC and my tendency to “over memorize until I’m perfect” meant I also never got past a couple hundred. In 2 years, I knew a few hundred words and a few hundred kanji, and it was not nearly enough to hit the same milestone I’d hit in French in 6 months with 500 words.
I didn’t make progress until year 2 in studying japanese, when I started Nukemarine’s Memrise LLJ decks and got through around 500 kanji, 500 other words, and a few hundred example sentences. It’s not surprising in retrospect that its at that point when I saw the same milestone I hit in french 5 months in. I finally had ~1500 ish words I knew from various resources. 3 times as many words as I knew in french when I could hit the same milestone (very basic reading skills with a dictionary of overall main idea).
At year 2 I made another major change that helped a lot - I started immersing. Before that, I’d “assumed” japanese would be too hard until I “learned more kanji, more words” and basically refused to challenge myself. But I learn best by doing. I remember best by doing things that make what I’m learning necessary to know. So immersion helped a LOT, it made remembering kanji much easier because I constantly needed them, it made picking up words easier too because I had reasons to know them.
I also started using more audio materials. It wasn’t a significant part of my study, but I remember I’d started using JapaneseAudioLessons.com’s lessons. I did 20 of them during that time period. What was useful, is I was practicing listening (which I later learned in Chinese really helps me specifically remember things better), and I had found a study method I could do when walking or doing other things. I’m very bad at sticking to flashcards or apps, which is why I always burn out on srs flashcard courses after a few weeks to a month. But just listening to files? If I manage to remember to, I don’t get burned out as easy, and its a good way for me to review and do new study regularly when I can’t carve out the time to sit down. Also again - in retrospect I think listening helps me learn a LOT better, which is something I didn’t really realize about myself until studying chinese later. But I think the regular audio exposure of japanese from year 2 - 2.5 helped a lot. Just like when I started japanese, my beginner college class made us listen to dialogues and shadow them constantly - which really helped.
So in retrospect, year 2 to 2.5 I made the quickest progress in japanese because I started prioritizing learning a LOT of words over learning them ‘perfect,’ and I got willing to just challenge myself and actually use the language regularly by trying to read manga and play a video game. I also realized at that time, that japanese was going to need more hours of study on a regular basis if I wanted a faster progress rate.
After 2.5 years, I stopped studying japanese. Because I was going to school full time, working 50 hours a week, and I knew I had no time for it.
During the study gap (2+ years)
I only engaged in japanese a little bit during the break where I no longer actively studied it. Every few months I’d try to read a manga - either one of mine or ones I found in thrift stores. I think I was hoping that like my french, reading once in a while would maintain it. But I knew a lot more french before I went down to not studying and only reading occasionally. So I did lose a lot of japanese.
I stopped remembering some verb endings, although in the middle of reading I could still recall a lot of them in context okay and understand what they meant. I forgot some particles - which again came back ok while I was reading. Word order I somewhat forgot. Hiragana-only words I FORGOT the most. Kanji for the most part I managed to keep remembering, so I suppose reading helped me keep remembering them. I am not sure if this occasional reading helped me review japanese year quicker and get back to progressing from where I left off.
The most noticeable thing was when I started learning Chinese, about 1 year after stopping Japanese. When I started learning chinese, some of the hanzi I learned ended up making manga more comprehensible to me. I remember maybe 6 months into chinese study, japanese manga (especially easy ones like School Rumble, Ranma 1/2, fan comics) had started to get understandable enough that I could sometimes follow chapter main overall ideas without a dictionary. So not the specific details - although sometimes I could pick up a few. But I didn’t need a dictionary to follow the main idea with simple manga anymore. Whereas at 2.5 years into study, I could follow the main overall idea of some simple manga chapters with a dictionary - that was the extent of my reading comprehension. So this was a significant improvement, a milestone I noticed. I know chinese hanzi study was indirectly benefiting my japanese reading skill a little bit.
In retrospect, I think it was giving me more ‘near cognates’ to rely on when reading. Since I didn’t know the new japanese words, but knowing the meaning if it were a hanzi gave me an idea of what to Guess the word might mean in the context of a manga chapter I was reading. Which helped a lot compared to having no information at all to rely on to figure out new words. With french, so much having latin and english similarity gave me a lot more tools when I was trying to figure out new words in context. So I think hanzi knowledge in the same kind of way was giving me more information, more related meanings, to pull from and make guesses. For me, that kind of information helps a lot when I study. its how I learned a lot of words in english - I’d relate them to english words I already knew, that they seemed similar to or written with something in common etc. So I could finally start relying on the same strategies I am more used to using for vocabulary figuring-out in japanese.
Current Japanese Progress (picking it up after a couple years gap)
I started trying to study japanese again I think in March or April 2021 - the exact month’s on this blog somewhere. So that’s 4 months as of now that I’ve studied japanese again. It took about 1 month to review the information I already knew - I just reread the beginning portion of Tae Kim’s grammar guide, and did the old lessons I’d done before in Nukemarine’s LLJ memrise decks.
At the very start of review, I just reread the intro of Japanese in 30 Hours (which I’ve read before), and listened to the first 15 lessons in japanese pimsleur. This was all audio or romaji so I didn’t confuse it with chinese. And it reminded me of the particles and general basic grammar. This mainly-audio portion of review was easy to just do while I was walking or playing video games.
After that, I went and reviewed old words and specific grammar using Tae Kim and Nukemarine’s memrise decks (which had text).
Then I was doing new stuff.
I had a goal to play a video game within a few months of restarting japanese - I met that goal about a month after reviewing. So May I think? I wrote down the exact month in previous blog posts.
It was easier than during my initial study at 2.5 years. It was still intense and draining though lol. However, I realized I didn’t actually need a dictionary to follow any main ideas. The biggest issue was either taking a long time to read for detail directions (very draining mentally), or trying to speed read for key info so I could get to a save point faster (draining mentally because I have less info and time to comprehend the info I’m reading). Anyway, not needing any dictionary for following the main overall ideas was a HUGE difference from my last japanese comprehension milestone at 2.5 years into study.
I am pretty sure its hanzi recognition that really boosted my reading comprehension in japanese. I know around ~1500-2000 hanzi in chinese right now, and a decent amount more I can comprehend pretty well if they’re in compound hanzi words (so context clues to figure out which word the ‘unknown’ hanzi is making the new compound word) since I read in chinese a lot. So in japanese, many of the most common kanji are similar to hanzi I’ve already learned well, and a lot of the compound kanji words are also pretty easy to guess a meaning for. And when the kanji doesn’t mean the same thing as the hanzi would, the prior context I have for these video games such as setting (and some knowledge of them in english playthroughs) and a similar-hanzi’s usual general meanings, means I can usually guess what the new japanese word might mean. Like japanese uses some kanji for somewhat different meanings than chinese (but a speech radical still means its probably talking related) then I can figure out from the scene how it might be a different speech-related word etc.
This past month, June 2021, I did two more things that boosted my japanese comprehension.
1. I’m playing a video game now that I know the story of really well. So I know the english lines almost by heart for most scenes, so if I don’t know a word in a sentence or don’t know the grammar pattern going on? I have a much better chance of figuring out what it might be. As a result I’m comprehending nearly all the details and words, nearly all the grammar roughly, so there’s very few portions of the game that I’m running into where I don’t have a good guess about every single part of a sentence or at least nearly everything. It’s Kingdom Hearts 2 I’m playing, and I am not surprised lol to realize I played that game So Much growing up I really do know all the lines by heart once I see them. KH2 is the game I initially played 2 years into studying japanese, and could somehow manage to function playing - probably because I know the game so well. So now? Now of course its the first japanese video game where I can follow nearly every part of it in japanese. It’s? A fun experience?? It’s kind of bizarre to me?
This is my favorite game, THE game when I was little that initially made me want to learn japanese. The game I wanted to play in japanese one day and understand and get to see the differences. It is an odd experience to be actually DOING what I wanted to do since I was 11. Over half of my life I’ve wanted to play this game in japanese! ToT I learned to draw people because of this game! It is absolutely surreal to me to be able to DO it. To be doing it.
Anyway back to study reflections ToT
2. Katakana english cognates and near cognates are galore in KH2 which makes navigation and playing easier than it could be, and my hanzi knowledge also helps with a lot more ‘near cognates’ I can recognize now compared to when I played 2 years into study. Reading Tae Kim’s grammar guide and Cure Dolly (and @yue-muffin telling me iru gets used like ‘ing’ in verbs like ‘doing’ versus to do) also have made the grammar somewhat easier to parse.
2. Clozemaster has ultimately been helping a lot. Clozemaster is definitely a contributing factor to having made KH2 easier to play for DETAIL understanding. I’ve been reading manga lately - which helped me practice parsing grammar in real life versus in textbooks a bit. Grammar and formality in manga like Yotsuba is informal and has these like slang-mood endings to sentences that I never see in grammar books I’ve read or in Nukemarine’s memrise decks (because they’re made from learner materials). But manga is easy to figure out context now, so I was getting used to grammar used in Reality.
Clozemaster is actually really good for practicing this too - and like with french or chinese, I think an upper beginner will be able to use it much better than a beginner. It changes formality, it changes how much slang is in a sentence or how polite, at random. Not all the translations are literal. You need a basic comprehension already to use clozemaster sentences somewhat. I did 632 sentences in clozemaster this past week. That was a LOT of practice with actual words regularly used in sentences, in dialogue, in various levels of formality and with words being hiragana or kanji depending on the specific sentence. So when I started KH2 again? Now a lot of endings that seem to convey moods, and words that I struggled with (like ‘a lot’ ‘always’ ‘because of’ ‘from’ ‘until’ ‘but’ ‘kedo’ ‘dakadesu’ ‘dakada’ etc) I am more used to following what they mean in a sentence. I’ve just seen a LOT of examples of them. Clozemaster also highlights verb endings sort of like their own ‘helper verb’ and while I don’t know if its actually grammatically true, it helps conceptualize stuff like verb tenses for me a lot easier. So now I am having an easier time recognizing them attached to verb stems, and recognizing the point the conjugation is getting across.
The main thing though is its just a lot of very focused practice on recognizing words and grammar in the context of regular sentences instead of learner material. Learner material tends to show one aspect at a time, not mix lots of things together since its giving examples, etc. Clozemaster does mix up the examples a lot - but while still generally having an easier ‘difficulty curve’ than an actual web novel or visual novel etc. Clozemaster will have a lot going on in a sentence but it will all be very common basic stuff where at most half is new stuff, and eventually only 1 is a new thing. Whereas if I just dived into regular materials it could be a bunch of “I know very little” sentences. Manga is good practice for this too - its just you see less text per minute in manga. In Clozemaster you see a lot of text and its generally at my reading level so it feels ‘graded’ but less learner-material perfected, which in this case makes it good for getting used to the variety. I think overall THAT is how Clozemaster is helping right now. Its also helping because of common words - but a lot of what I’ve seen so far has been review too, so I think its the exposure to different sentences and odd things in them that’s been most helpful in translating to making video games feel a bit easier.
I’ve been doing the “most common” word tracks in Clozemaster’s japanese lessons, and I think they’re more useful to me immediately than the JLPT track. The fast track is kind of useful, but it doesn’t expose me to as many sentences to really drill aspects. I took someone’s advice and have been doing listening mode, so I listen then listen a few times and identify words THEN read it and answer the cloze. They also said to do the full ‘most common words’ tracks, and so far that advice has been good. The JLPT track is good too - and matches up more with words I had to learn in my other lessons and textbooks, combined with more complex sentences with more stuff going on in them at once than some learner materials. But since I’m trying to study to understand japanese games, not take the JLPT, I think right now that track less useful to me. In the Common Words track I immediately learned a lot of ‘filler’ words that imply meanings and are important but weren’t in my textbooks, even though I hear them constantly when watching things or playing games. So because of that, right now I’m sticking to the common words track.
Summary: using kingdom hearts 2 is a good immersion material right now since I know the context well, it feels almost ‘graded’ for me since I can comprehend it much easier than other things I know less well (like Crisis Core which I love but requires much more focus and is more mentally draining since I have to re-figure out the initial context of scenes before i can focus on what the specific words mean). And using audio materials, clozemaster, has helped. Also just... I was wondering why lately handling japanese stuff has been easier (compared to previously for me) and I think a huge part of it is that for me hanzi knowledge really helped give me more near-cognates from kanji i can rely on now. Which makes japanese seem much less opaque as far as me trying to use context clues to understand things and learn new words. And since I prefer to learn by DOING, its valuable to me that now I have enough surrounding context and context-hints from kanji to start learning by guessing words in context a bit more. Also, in KH2′s case a huge benefit is the large amount of katakana words that I know what they’re meant to be in english, which are pretty much cognates, and both recognizing kanji a bit and also knowing the rough-english they Should be corresponding to (if its different than the chinese hanzi meaning).
I’m going to keep playing KH2 lets see if its the first Game I can finish in Japanese (which it may well be lol). Also I just... genuinely think that for myself, among the other things I learned about How I personally learn through the years of trying to learn this, I think for me learning some chinese first really helped.
I know books I used to have used to encourage me to learn kanji first, but that always just ended up holding me back from studying more because I just could Not handle a kanji with no sound attached solidly in my mind. And then when I did brute force just study words anyway, it helped, but I still had a much fuzzier way of handling and relating to kanji. And in general just was learning them from nothing as a prior basis.
With chinese, just one sound matched to most hanzi really like clicks with how I remember? And when there are pronunciation changes in my brain it just clicks a lot more like how english word-parts change pronunciation depending on the word - it makes a kind of pattern sense to me I guess? And the logic of sound+meaning for most hanzi formations means I finally get why certain radicals are in things - because it got simplified, or used to hint at sound, since they don’t All have all radicals relating to meaning only. Whereas when I studied kanji prior all the books would try to get me to associate all the radicals with meaning (but sometimes if a radical in hanzi come from a sound they don’t have to do with the meaning). And I guess it was just so much harder for me to stick the information solidly in my brain.
Now? Now I’m finding putting kanji pronunciations to different words is making a bit more sense to me. Like I already have a base to attach it to, so its less hard to add “this extra pronunciation for japanese word X” rather than just “this ONE pronunciation for this BRAND NEW kanji+hiragana word!” Because attaching an extra pronunciation to something I Already know? Is not too hard - I did it in english word-parts for my whole life, I did it with hanzi occasionally in chinese. So now attaching sounds to kanji feels more like something I’m used to doing and know how to do - instead of learning lots of new stuff with no idea how to mash it together and remember it.
Also now the ‘chinese like’ pronunciations for some words stick out to me much clearer in japanese, since I can tell when the pronunciation is similar to a hanzi in chinese versus not. Which makes those words much easier to remember, those pronunciations easier to remember, and it much easier for my brain to distinguish between ‘when to use this pronunciation versus another for this kanji.’ Also just grammar of course, knowing how the pronunciation changes in different forms also helps make it easier to think ‘ok this might be why the kanji sound changed when this verb is in a new conjugation.’
I just. If I would have told myself over 2 years ago that 1. I’d even learn some chinese, and 2. it would help my japanese this much (to a noticeable amount) I would have been really ???
Another thing I think helped is a Decent Solid sound base in chinese - I generally have a sound associated to all hanzi already that I know so I do not ‘confuse’ them with japanese words. Which would definitely happen if my listening wasn’t as solid. I worked on chinese listening a lot the past few months and it helped a LOT with keeping the languages as very distinctly different so I don’t mix up kanji/hanzi (also the fact kanji don’t have tones the same way helps me separate the sound when I hear so I don’t mix up what I’m listening to, which if me listening wasn’t as practiced I think mixing up would happen more - tones really help me clearly keep my brain from even thinking I’m hearing chinese when I see a kanji and hear pronunciation).

Guardian Angel
OKAY SO LISTEN. this is not the update anyone was hoping for but sometimes the only thing that’s gonna keep my contrary adhd brain from Abandoning a project is to Invest Energy Somewhere else for a while. case in point, I've been plugging grimly away at both café and wkw for weeks and written ~500 words total, and then I wrote this whole thing in About Twenty Minutes.
So uh. You know how FBI is an au of an Actual WIP I have about vampires? Well this is... technically also that but it’s a lot closer to the actual canon of that WIP. If you don’t know anything about FBI or those characters, that’s great, you’re in the same spot Karim is here lmao.
Also this is heavily inspired by this very good spn fic, which I keep coming back to despite not being active in that fandom at all anymore. This goes in a very different direction than that, but they open in similar ways.
Also please note, the main character of this is a young teenager, and there will be some mild underage whump, but this is my official promise that there is no underage sex in this story.
Anyway uh let’s get this..... car wreck underway I guess
TW for: car accident due to reckless driving resulting in serious injury (or by rights it should anyway); body horror; animated corpse (of a sort); religion/Christianity.
----
For about—let’s say—the first fifteen miles away from his house, the thrill of the stolen car and his notable lack of driver’s license was enough to keep Karim in his own skin, not spiralling into rushing panicky thoughts. After a while that thrill starts to fade into the background and every time it does he hits the gas a little harder, and the new speed is enough for him for another fifteen miles until he has to hit the gas again because his brain is catching up with him.
Which is to say that when the thin pale shape of a human being stumbles out of the bushes along the side of the highway, Karim is going easily a hundred miles an hour, and no amount of slamming on the brakes is going to get him to stop in the hundred feet between himself and this person’s human body.
He hits the white shape at, optimistically, sixty miles an hour. It shoots up the car’s hood, cracks the windshield with its skull, and disappears over the top of the car. Realistically there’s no way the quiet hard thump of the body hitting the pavement many feet behind the car is audible over the sound of the car’s squealing brakes but it feels like Karim can hear it, can hear the accompanying crack of bones breaking against the asphalt.
The car rolls to a stop, and Karim spends several unfathomable seconds staring at the windshield, not bloodied but almost completely starred with a huge spiraling crack just off the center, and all he can think is, no, no, no no no no no oh no oh no.
Then he hears a muffled groan from behind him and dives for the car door, tumbles out onto the pavement on his hands and knees, scrambles back toward the pale body squirming and twitching in the middle of the left lane behind his mother’s SUV.
Somehow there’s still no blood, even back here, but it is immediately clear that there is something seriously, deeply wrong with this body.
“Motherfucker,” it says, and Karim freezes a few feet away from it, still the most horrified he’s ever been and now also very confused and between those two feelings no longer able to move. The voice issuing from the ruined and twisted body sounds, at most, annoyed. It flops horribly onto its back, like a boned fish, and rolls its head awkwardly on its shoulders to face Karim. “Going a fucking million miles an hour on an—” The body stops speaking, and stares up with wide shocked eyes in its colorless face.
“Karim,” the dead thing says.
Karim stumbles back a step, the horror already overfilling his chest growing and mutating so fast he loses his footing and falls painfully backwards, scraping his palms as he catches himself to stop from sprawling completely. The initial all-consuming terror of having killed a person with his mother’s car is turning into a—different, harder to parse all-consuming terror.
Because every instinct he has is telling him that this thing that just called him by his name is a corpse.
Watching it sit up on the pavement, in a hopefully unconscious mirror of Karim’s own half-sprawled pose, is like watching a marionette puppet being controlled by a very unskilled puppeteer. It’s movements are jerky and uneven; it falls back when it puts its weight on one of its arms and the leg on that side is stuck out stiffly in front of it and bending in places that aren’t joints. And above its wide filmy eyes its forehead is starred with cracks like an egg dropped on a hardwood floor.
“You’re alive,” it says. Its voice is—completely normal, which is somehow the strangest thing about it. About—him.
“I—I’m so sorry,” Karim says, starting to run on autopilot now, fumbling in his pocket for his cellphone, “I’ll call, I’ll call an ambulance, I’ll—”
“I don’t need an ambulance,” the dead boy says absently. He leans forward, his mangled arm hanging useless at his side, though he doesn’t move like he’s in any pain at all. “You’re—holy shit, you’re a baby.”
Karim blinks, away from his phone screen, up at the dead boy. He looks—older than Karim, but not by that much, like a college student, maybe. And he’s looking up at Karim with alarm that’s almost horror, like Karim is the weird mangled abomination here.
“I am not,” he says automatically. There’s still no blood, anywhere. There’s—he can see that the skin of the boy’s head is broken, but it’s not bleeding, not a drop.
The boy searches his face with his weird foggy eyes, still leaning forward. His hair is short, maybe even buzzed in the back, and it’s a dull sandy-brown, above a face that might be handsome if it wasn’t gray-tinged and bloodless and cracked open.
“What year is this?” the dead boy says urgently.
Karim stares at him.
His arm is dangling limply at his side and his leg is definitely broken in more than one place and Karim did that, which will continue to be true regardless of whatever else is going on with this guy medically, and Karim has no idea what to do about that, is almost paralyzed by the desire to physically twist time back ten minutes and have this not be the moment he’s in right now.
But he can’t do that, so he answers, “Uh, 2009?” in a high squeaky voice like it’s a question, instead.
The dead boy’s eyes go even wider.
“It’s,” he whispers. “You’re,” and then he stops and looks at the ground. He raises his still-working arm to scrub across his cracked forehead, maybe tries to raise the other one, winces.
“I’m sorry,” Karim croaks. “I should— I gotta get you to a hospital.”
The dead boy shakes his head. “I don’t need a hospital,” he says, “I need a church.”
Karim feels himself gasp sharply. “Oh god,” he says, “Oh no, I’m— sure you’ll— make it, man, you’re—” He laughs, the sounds grating and hysterical in his own ears. “Look, you’re not even bleeding!”
The dead boy blinks up at him, and then he laughs, throwing his head back, and it’s a full, pretty laugh, sparking up toward the darkening sky— and when he lifts his chin Karim can suddenly see a bizarre pattern of marks all over his neck, a dozen little dots, in pairs, clustered around where you would look for a pulse on someone you weren’t sure was alive.
“That’s not what I mean,” the dead boy says, his eyes squinty and warm with laughter, and then he takes in a deep breath and lets it out slowly, staring at Karim, the smile fading from his pretty dead face. “Christ,” he says softly, and then, again, “Karim.”
Karim takes half a step back. “How— how do you know my name?”
“Ha,” the boy says, “that’s—” He tries to push himself to his feet and hisses, falling back like his broken leg won’t take any weight. Karim takes a step closer, unable to keep from reacting to obvious pain that he definitely 100% caused. “Actually,” the boy says, “I—would love it. If you could give me a ride. To the nearest church before I try to answer that. Karim.”
Karim stares at him. “What?”
“Catholic would be best if you’ve got it,” the boy says, with the air of somebody who knows he’s saying an absurd thing and is trying very hard to play it off. “I’m sure another kind would work but I’d just as soon not—” He shifts, winces a little; Karim looks down at his leg and squeezes his eyes shut, he’d momentarily forgotten how awful it looks. The boy laughs, sounding slightly hysterical. “I’d just as soon not drive around between a bunch’a churches if it’s all the same to you. Save you some gas money, huh?”
“Why,” Karim says, and he forces himself to look at the boy’s leg for real. There’s a place beside the— crooked, displaced— kneecap where Karim can see a strip of skin missing, and the exposed flesh is pale and bloodless; he feels his stomach squeeze in panicked nausea. “Why would you need a church right now.”
The boy sucks his teeth audibly, bowing his head, and then spreads his still-working hand wide with a fine-you-got-me shrug.
“Because,” the dead boy says, “I need holy water to put my leg back together.”
Karim blinks. Blinks again, for good measure.
“What,” he says. He shakes his head. “What. Why would that. Why.”
The boy looks away, tilts his head like he’s doing math in his head, and says slowly, in the voice of someone trying a gambit they’re pretty sure won’t work. “Because I’m... your guardian... angel?”
Karim narrows his eyes. The boy could at least have the decency to say it like he means it.
“Okay,” the dead boy says, and nods like he’s trying to psyche himself up. “Okay, yeah, no, that’s fair, I— Hold on, I’ll— I’ll show you.”
The dead boy sighs and shakes his head. “This is gonna fucking suck,” he mutters, and he closes his eyes.
At first Karim doesn’t think anything weird is happening— that an evening breeze has just kicked up. But as the wind gets stronger and he can see pebbles and bits of loose asphalt skittering away from where the dead boy sits on the pavement, it becomes clear that the sudden rush of cool air is coming from him. His sandy hair is whipping around his head, too, like it’s in a stronger wind than the one Karim can feel, and Karim realizes a second late that there’s— light coming from him too, a cold white glow growing so slowly he didn’t see it at first.
The dead boy lets out a shaky breath, his face creasing in concentration, or maybe pain.
Karim stumbles backward, hitting the back of the car and pressing his back against it, staring at the dead boy. The wind picks up and the light suddenly flashes, so bright that Karim throws up his arm to shield his eyes— and through his fingers, he can just see that the light beaming from the empty air above the dead boy’s shoulder blades, where it almost forms the shape of two enormous wings out of thin air and dust.
The wind and light sputter and die roughly in unison. Karim lowers his hand enough to stare at the dead boy in— he’s not sure what feeling, actually. Possibly terror.
The boy’s hair settles back against his cracked forehead. “Oh, good,” he says, breathing hard, like he’s just run a mile on a hot day. “It worked.”
Then the dead boy sags sideways and flops limply onto the pavement, and lies still, like corpses generally do.
“What the fuck,” Karim Mun says, with feeling.

How many times a day do you talk on the phone with your significant other?: I just answered this on another survey lol. Idk it really depends how long or short our conversations are so there’s no one definite number of times, but generally I talk to her throughout the day. If we’re both busy, talking in the morning and before turning in for bed would be enough as well.
Other than English, what was the last language spoken to you?: Filipino.
What math level are you currently taking/did you last take in school?: I’m taking up a journalism degree so there’s very little math required for me to take. The one and only math class I had was Math 1 in freshman year and it was so basic we didn’t even take up actual math – it was a class on the history of math lmao.
Who was the last person to ask you for relationship advice?: Kate. I haven’t checked up on her and the guy, actually. Last time she went to me she seemed stressed and I never heard a rant from her after that, so I dunno if they fixed stuff or just broke up altogether.
Do you have a sleeping problem?: No, I sleep just fine.
Have you ever taken a survey with a friend, listing both answers?: Nooooooo no no hard pass. I wouldn’t want my friends to know I do surveys.
Where would you order your favorite burger from?: Pound’s burgers are so good. I stopped looking for other burgers once I got to try theirs.
Who have you been hanging out with most often these days?: Myself...and by default Kimi, who follows me literally anywhere.
Do you know a guy who has hair longer than yours?: Yes.
What color was the last cup you drank out of?: It was just a clear glass.
If you’re in school, what do you do to fill in time between classes?: I go to our org lounge, which is a place in the college we call Skywalk since it’s a walkway on the second floor connecting two buildings. There’s always stuff to do or people to hang out with there, so it’s my favorite place to go to and kill time.
Do you have friends in your classes? Not always. I wasn’t one of those people who needed to enroll in every class with a friend. I just walk into my classes to do my acads, submit shit, and finish off the class with a good grade. It’s cool if I spot a friend, but otherwise it’s not my priority.
When did you last encounter someone you disliked? Today and generally daily, pretty much.
Ever been to a real haunted house?: I don’t think so. Though when we went to Laurice’s house she told us that the house in front of theirs is abandoned – and it did look creepy lol – so we just assumed it was haunted. A couple of the boys went in to check it out but the rest of us just stayed at Laurice’s.
Where was the last place you got lost?: Probs the last time I went to BGC. That place has so many fancy schmancy traffic rules of its own and so many one-way streets and stoplights that anyone who isn’t from there can easily get lost.
What windows are open on your desktop right now?: I have a Try Guys video paused on YouTube, the Google Doc file for my thesis, the Google Forms file for my thesis questionnaire’s results, and a digital copy of the book I’m currently reading.
When was the last time you had cheesecake?: The other day I had ube cheesecake. It was supposed to be my dad’s Mother’s Day gift for my mom, but I asked for some heheh.
When you last shed tears, was it because of a person?: Technically? I cried from of a song, but it also kinda reminded me of a person.
Which music artists were at the last concert you attended?: Paramore <3
What was the last thing you discussed through text messages?: I spent my last peso texting Gabie we had no internet at home for the night so I won’t be able to talk to her, and that I’ll try again the next day.
How many songs are on your iPod/MP3 player?: I don’t keep one anymore. Technically, any songs I wanna listen to are accessible to me on Spotify now. Though it’s safe to guess that my iPod probably reached a peak of 500+ songs.
Other than yours, whose house did you last fall asleep at?: Gabie’s, most likely.
Have you ever had a significant other whose parents didn’t like you?: I don’t think so. I get very insecure about this every so often given that we’re in a same-sex relationship and that I don’t always have the money to woo her parents and buy them pasalubong, but Gabie always reassures me her parents are more than alright with me. And there’s zero reason not to believe her when I do meet up with her parents as they’re very lovely people, so I guess it’s all good in the hood.
What’s so unique about your computer?: The stickers I’ve placed on my laptop case are probably the most unique about it.
How was life for you six months ago?: November was mostly uneventful for me. I think I was still mostly reeling over Nacho’s death.
How much is gas in your area?: I dunno, I never check lol. There’s been a series of rollbacks since March because of the virus, but this week my dad mentioned something about a price hike so it might be starting to come up again.
What’s something interesting you learned in the past week?: A bunch. I just got into a YouTube channel called Oversimplified which posts hilarious narratives of historical events (mostly wars) complete with doodles to make them easier to follow. Yesterday I learned about the Battle of Hastings which would also apparently become very influential when it came to the English language, so it was pretty cool to learn it was more than just a physical war.
Do you know what you plan to do for your next birthday?: Out-of-town trip or an overseas one altogether. Either sounds ideal.
Was the last book you read for fun or assignment related?: For leisure.

A Hallmark Celebration | Writing Challenge
Tumblr media
This is a thank you to everyone who has followed, supported or even just liked something on my blog. I wouldn’t be celebrating 400 followers today if it wasn’t for all of you. 400 isn’t a lot to other people but it means so much to me. When I set up this blog I wasn’t even 100% sure that people would even like my writing or if my writing was up to par with some of the other writing that I had witnessed here.
Now about 2 years later, 400 of you are being incredible and supporting me consistently even though I’ve been away recovering and going through the process of getting a book published. Which wouldn’t have been possible were it not for the people who encouraged me about my writing since the beginning. All of you have been my rock and my support as a writer and I can’t thank you enough for that but I can give you a writing challenge.
When I started writing here it was other people sharing my work, giving me feedback and loving on it that got me to where I am. So I want to give back to everyone, whether you’re a new writer here or you’ve been writing longer than I have, I hope you have fun and challenge yourself to write something fun.
Tumblr media
RULES AND INFORMATION
Give the list a scan and send me an ask with the following: your prompt, your pairing (______ x reader/character), and if you know what the genre ( fluff, angst, etc) is going to be, let me know as well.
You don’t have to be following me to participate, it’d be highly appreciated if you wanted to! It would also mean the world if you could reblog this even if you decide to not participate, just to signal boost it!
This challenge isn’t only limited to one fandom rather five because I, as a writing blog, am multifandom. You can write for Marvel (All Marver whether it’s Netflix, Fox, Sony, the MCU or even the comics, go wild!), Sherlock, Merlin (because I recently rewatched it.) and Supernatural, DC (All DC applies here too!). If you’re not sure if you can write for a certain character, hit me up and ask.  Or if you want to write for someone not in these fandoms let me know also and it might just be okay.
Keep whatever you write legal, don’t write smut if you’re underage, and no incest! Include the right warnings. I can’t stress this enough. Make sure your warnings are very clearly stated at the start of your fic and that you’re using correct tags! Please be considerate of the dash and the tag that you’re posting in.
If your fic is long (I’d consider long upwards of 500 words) put it under a ‘read more’.
This challenge will be running from today (June 24), until October 2nd 11:59 pm GMT. I know summer is the peak of all these challenges so I thought I’d give people plenty of time to have a chance to join in with all the other challenges happening. You can join in at any time so long as you post by October 2nd.
I will be compiling all fics that have been submitted with a link to them. If you do a series, please make a masterlist for just that series so I can link the masterlist.
Once you have posted, please make sure to tag me in it. I want to be able to track down every fic submitted to share them. Tumblr has been fickle lately with tags so you can also use the tag: #ahallmarkcelebrationchallenge that way I can track the tag and everything that appears in it. If all else fails, your fic doesn’t appear in the tags and Tumblr won’t allow you to tag me. Please send me a message with a link to your fic if I haven’t reblogged/liked your fic within the first two days.
If you have any other questions at all don’t be shy and have the most fun writing!!

Second Chance Sanctuary
It has been updated! Y/N now has a name...among other clarifying actions..
Ariana Waters had been alone most of her life. It wasn't that her mother didn't love her, she just worked a lot. Her father? Who knows where he was, and if she ever asked her mother about him she'd get a side eye and an angry grunt.
Growing up in Brooklyn, Ariana was a tough kid with a sweet inside. She knew how to take charge and stand up for herself, but she was easily amused and always had a smile on her face. Life was ok, and she was fine with that.
Her mother was a nurse so she worked long nights, and when she finally did come home, she'd cook enough meals for a few days and sleep for hours on end.
"Ari, how's school going?" Her mother would kiss her forehead, smoothing back her blown out natural hair.
"Good mama, just finishing a paper now." Furiously typing on the laptop her mother had saved for months to get her.
"That's my girl." Her mother would linger a bit and ask about friends and any social events. Once exhaustion kicked in she would disappear into her room and Ariana would quiet her tapping fingers as to not disturb her mother.
Then her mother met JinWoo Park, a doctor that came to New York on a special request from the hospital. He was a top surgeon in Korea, and some high profile patient needed his expertise. He fell in love with her mother, and the next thing Ariana knew she was flying to Korea in her junior year of high school, from Brooklyn to Seoul, South Korea with her mother and new step-father.
South Korea was...different. She was now in an international school, so sure the language barrier wasn't so much of an issue, but there were also more...hybrids here.
There weren't too many hybrids in New York. At least, not in Brooklyn, sure she had seen some in Manhattan, but here hybrids were a normal part of life. The idea that she would think that made her feel silly, they originated in this part of the world. Cloning science combined animal and human DNA to create the perfect soldiers, service companions and guards.
Cats and dogs seemed to be the only mixes that were around so far. The first time she saw a hybrid up close, she was in the airport. A Beagle/Human was walking around sniffing luggage coming in from overseas. His floppy brown ears, hung low on his head, brown colored nose moving eagerly along the suitcases.
He seemed to feel someone staring at him, as he turned around and looked at her, she went wide-eyed unable to do anything but stare. He'd smiled at her, winking before going back to his work, his long white-tipped tail wagging anxiously.
The second time, she had been following her mother as she walked down a street in Gangnam when she spotted a woman with a young man whose long, fluffy white tail was twitching as he stared at birds on the patio. His green eyes flicked right to left, while the woman spoke to a friend, his hand sneakily trying to reach out and grab the bird.
"DaeSuk...if you even think about it..." She let her words linger, as the male turned his delicate triangle shaped face towards her.
He was a Turkish Angora hybrid, his delicate eyes narrowing as he pretended to not hear her, and continued to watch the birds with rapt interest.
Apparently, only the rich "owned" hybrids. Others were employed by the government or private corporations. The rest? She didn't know.
Once she was settled into her new home, Ariana got used to being alone again. Her mother was off on adventures with new friends and her step-father. Not that Ariana was upset, she was happy that her mother didn't need to work so hard now. She could relax, she could have fun. She couldn't remember the last time, she saw her mother smile. Now she was always smiling.
But as for her, she was alone.
One month into the new year, 1 year of officially living in Korea, Ariana found herself walking down an unfamiliar sidewalk as she explored the city. She had gone to a new coffee house in the Yongsan District and planned on going to a park near the Han river. Her GPS seemed to be taking a long way around, and she zoomed in on her phone for a shortcut. The snow was falling lightly, not enough to make her turn back, and she'd come this far anyway.
"Turn left in 500 feet." Her GPS said to her, as she held her phone out in front of her, looking at the cars that went by.
The turn would take her next to a large building and around some shopping district. Right before that was a small alley, it was narrow, but it seemed that it would take her right to the park. Or at least near it. She touched her 4A hair snug in its bun, smoothing it down as the snow fell on her.
Perhaps it was too cold to be out here.
Then she heard something, or did she? A small whimper somewhere in the alley. A chill ran down her spine as she took a deep breath and turned towards the sound.
"Hello?" Ariana called, suddenly very aware that no one seemed to be around. A few people passed but, 1 or 2 at a time. Not noticing her.
The whimper came again, and it almost sounded like a small cry. Slowly, she felt her boots crunch under new snow as she slowly made her down the alley. Why was it so dark down here?
"Do you need help?" A rattle sound and another whimper, she was about to turn back.
This is how people got murdered, but as she turned around and heard the sound of a puppy snuffle, she hurried to a pile of boxes, moving them out of the way. Old noodles, rotten vegetables, and some very smelly kimchi fell over and to the side.
Then there was an old, dirty box with Chinese writing on it. Slowly she opened it to reveal what looked like a small boy. His long, dark tail was curled around him, his face hidden in his ragged sweater that covered his whole body.
He was a hybrid. Reaching out she poked his back, only to watch him curl into himself. He was shivering, and he smelled horrible. Ariana reached her hand out again and tried to look at his face.
"Come on now sweetie, don't be afraid I won't hurt you." She didn't know if he could talk, but apparently, he could understand her.
Turning his face towards her, he gently licked at her palm before rubbing his nose into her hand. A gleam of metal shown around his neck, as she gently pulled the rectangle shaped tag so she could read it.
"Suho." She read out loud, that meant guardian. Why would someone leave a hybrid here in all this trash?
The pup named Suho climbed from the box and happily found a place to hide between her crouched legs. His small arms wrapping around her leg as he shivered. His tail was moving a mile a minute. Looking around no one noticed her, there was no one here and the snow began to fall harder. It was a lot longer walk back than she was sure he could make, but should she take him? Oh god, what would her mother say? Her step-father might have some authorities come and take him away. Ariana had wanted a friend...and her mother and step-father were never home enough to notice anything. Weighing the thoughts in her mind, Ariana looked down at Suho, he was currently trying to fit himself under her jacket, his puppy teeth biting on the cloth as he attempted to make room for himself. His dark brown ears stood erect on his head, moving about. Maybe he was some sort of Shepherd? She could spin this as a companion and just as his name implied, a guardian.
Maybe he was a reject?
Taking out her cell phone Ariana sighed dialing the number to the car service her stepfather told her to use.
"Hello? Yes, it's me. Yea, I know...I'm near the park in Yongsan...I'll send you a street name." Picking up Suho she bundled him in her jacket, his head under her chin as she looked into his deep brown eyes.
"I guess it's you and me now."
Back at home, Ariana quietly came into the house, she expected no one but didn't want any surprises. First, he'd need a bath. Rushing up to her room, she set Suho down in the bathroom, gathering clothes and shampoo and a spare toothbrush from the linen closet in the hall.
When she returned he was sitting on the floor in a pile of toilet paper. He was much more like a puppy than she expected. After he was washed and fed she'd have to do some research. Ariana wondered how fast they grew, surely not like regular humans. Was he able to talk?
"Suho." She said, taking his shirt over his head. She noticed a small patch of dark brown fur on his small chest. He looked up at her clearly knowing his name. "Can you talk?"
His ears twitched, as his head moved. He opened his mouth but closed it again. Was he mute? Running water in the tub, she added a bit of bubbles, watching as he stood next to her reaching out to touch the curious soap. When it popped he stood back, growling softly. Ariana took his hand gently and reached out to pop another bubble. When he looked at her and smiled, she smiled back before turning off the water.
"In you go." Lifting him into the tub, Suho struggled a bit in the air before settling down.
"Hot!" Suho cried out, scrambling out of the water.
So he could speak. "Ok, sorry!" Running more cold water, she adjusted the temperature for him before placing him back inside.
Was she supposed to wash him? He seemed to know what to do, taking the soapy rag from her hand as he cleaned himself. His slightly tanned skin glowed now as the dirt came off. Ariana noticed a few scrapes and cuts and wondered how he got them. When he sat back down, she set to washing his hair making sure no water got in his ears.
"So you can talk. Can you tell me where you were before? How did you end up in a box?" Finger combing through his dark hair, Suho murred gently, ears going flat.
"Don't know." He answered softly, trying to eat a handful of bubbles.
"Where is your mother? Father? Owner?" Ariana asked, rinsing his hair.
"Gone." Suho answered her. "May I eat today?"
Today? Was he not allowed to eat any other day? Tears pricked at Ariana's eyes when she noticed a large bruise on his neck. Her finger reached out to touch it, and she fought the crack in her voice as she spoke. "Suho...who did this?"
His ears flat against his head, he growled, small hands balling into fists. "I was bad."
She wasn't going to cry, he might panic or think something was wrong. Ariana rubbed her hand against his head. Wherever he came from, and whoever did this to him, they didn't need him back, and they obviously didn't want him if she found him in the trash heap. As Ariana took him from the tub, she cuddled him in a towel, gently drying his skin and hair.
"May I eat today?" He asked her again, his small eyes looking into her face.
Ariana smiled at him, taking his hands into her own. "You can eat everyday with me. You can eat when you want and as much as you want, just tell me when you are hungry."
His tail started wagging, moving his whole lower body, small arms going around her neck. Suho said nothing but this gesture, this feeling of warmth, someone wanted to be with her. Someone needed her. This was nice.
Ariana sat in the kitchen as Suho scarfed down the chicken, beef, rolls, corn, kimchi, and kimbap. He was quite fond of soda as well, burping loudly as he continued to pile food in his face. When was the last time he ate? He talked a little more about what he knew. A big building, with dogs like him, the men said he was bad, they smacked him and hurt him. They told him he couldn't eat. Then one night he fell asleep, tummy hurting and he woke up in the box and couldn't get out.
He knew nothing else.
Ariana wiped the tears from her eyes, as he said what he knew. He was a puppy, he was a child! Who could do such a thing? Finished with his food, clean and dressed in an old shirt and shorts that had to pin together Suho looked comical. She'd have to find him some appropriate clothing.
"I'm sleepy," Suho announced, sliding off the chair. He took a dish rag from the counter and bundled it on the floor in the corner. Ariana watched as he turned around on it several times before curling himself on it.
Jesus, he was used to sleeping on floors? Quickly cleaning up the dishes, Ariana carried the now sleeping Suho into her room. He was so small now. Would he always be this way? She made a pallet on the floor near her bed, laying him down on it covering him with a blanket. His mouth slightly open as he snored, his now big belly moving up and down. She smiled, taking the time to shower herself now.
She tried not to stop and think about what she was doing and what might happen. How she could get into trouble. Couldn't she? If they threw him away then they wouldn't come looking for him. Perhaps they expected him to die? Opening the door to her room, she discovered he wasn't on his pallet. A bolt of fear went through her until she saw him cuddled on the blankets of her bed.
"Suho...I thought you left." She breathed out, closing the bathroom door walking to the bed.
"Suho stays with you. I won't leave, and I'll be a good boy." He laid his head on her lap as she sat down.
Rubbing the tip of his ear gently Ariana smiled, giving his head a good scratch. "Yes, you'll stay with me."
"For a long time," Suho stated matter of factly.
"A very long time," She'd get to that research tomorrow morning. "Now it's time for bed." Getting up she closed her room door, bathing the room in darkness except for the soft pink light of a nightlight in one corner.
"Can I sleep with you?" He asked, getting himself under the covers.
A smile pricked at the corners of her mouth. "Are you afraid of the dark?"
She could barely see his face in the darkness but felt the stiffness of his body as she laid down next to him. "No. I can see in the dark. I just don't want you to leave."
Ariana ran her fingers through his hair, holding Suho's small body close to her. He smelled like her Cantu shampoo and Shea butter. "I told you, I won't ever leave. Now sleep."

500 Lives Ch.3
His hair was a light pink and his eyes twinkled; two small clock hands as he smiled.
“Sorry,” you whispered nervously, your heart barely maintaining its place within your chest. He chuckled, a glorious sound as he scratched his head playfully.
“Oh no no. It’s my fault! I should have looked where I was going!” his apologetic smile growing larger.
“Let’s just agree it’s on us both,” you smile playfully. He responds in suit, and you don’t even notice Jeonghan slinking away from you both.
“How about I buy you a coffee to make up for it?” he asks cautiously, his eyes flicking from your face to the ground quickly.
“I should run into cute guys more often!” you exclaim, nodding. You pretend not to notice the blush that creeps on his face when you say cute, instead relishing in the prospect of spending even a second more with him.
“I’m Y/N by the way” you offer, holding out your hand. He reaches his out, grasping yours tightly, warmly. You can barely maintain yourself as electricity shoots from your fingertips throughout your entire body. It’s a feeling you’ve had nearly 100 times, but one that you’ll never grow used to.
“I’m Soonyoung.”
And it begins.
***
Jeonghan slowly makes his way back to the table, noting on the faces of the boys that they haven’t witnessed probably the happiest moment of your life so far on this planet. He tried to hide his sting.
“Is Y/N okay?” Chan asks, concerned. A look of guilt covers his face and Jeonghan wonders silently if he blames himself for her leaving the table.
“Oh, she’s fine. In fact, she’s happier than ever right now.” Jeonghan points his thumb behind him to where you and Soonyoung sit at the café bar, laughing to each other. The glow of happiness on your face is hard to miss. He wished he could miss the identical glow on Soonyoung’s face.
“Ah, so it finally happened,” Wonwoo responded, looking intently at Jeonghan’s face for a reaction.
“You know, even as a human and not a spineless octopus thing, he still looks the same,” Vernon wonders out loud, Minghao nearly spits out his drink as he agrees in laughter.
“Is that…him?” Chan asks cautiously.
Jeonghan nods, “the one great love of Y/N’s life.”
The boys all pretend not to hear the sarcasm lacing Jeonghan’s voice. Chan looks confusedly at Jihoon beside him. In his ear, Jihoon whispers, “Jeonghan always gets a little crabby when Y/N and Soonyoung meet. They’re really close, and when Y/N and Soonyoung get together, she tends to disappear. It’s her happiest day, but it’s kind of the day Jeonghan loses his best friend too.”
Chan nods noticing the tense look on Jeonghan’s face, his mouth tightly shut.
“Well, let’s have a drink,” Wonwoo starts, his eyes darting to Jeonghan, “here’s to the last time we see or hear from Y/N for the next few months.”
The boys all cheer solemnly, noting Wonwoo’s sarcasm for its truth.
Chan doesn’t miss the unconcealed pain on Jeonghan’s face.
***
You lay on your bed giggling like a teenager in love. Well, adding a few years, you basically are a teenager in love. You glance down at your phone where you have a text still waiting for a response from Soonyoung.
Soonyoung Today 8:06 p.m.:
Tonight was amazing. Do you think we could do it again?
Say, Thursday night?
It’d been 30 minutes since you got the text and your heart still hadn’t stopped beating as rapidly as it had the minute you received it. You honestly didn’t know why you hadn’t responded immediately saying yes. Of course you were going to say yes. Meeting him was all you had been waiting for in this lifetime. In every lifetime. So why hadn’t you said yes yet?
A knock sounded at the door, causing you to flip your phone over as you told whoever it was to come in. Surprisingly, it was Chan.
“Oh hey Chan. What’s up?”
“Hey Y/N. Nothing…erm…are you busy right now?” he asks, looking at your phone beside you. You nudge it further away from you before shaking your head.
“I’m totally free.”
Chan nods his head awkwardly and steps into the room, shutting the door slowly behind him.
“I just still had a few questions about the whole reincarnation thing.”
“Oh yeah of course! The guys can be a little dense and poor at explaining things sometimes.”
You still remember Wonwoo explaining reincarnation to Vernon the first time: You died. Now you’re back. It sucks. Have fun with it. You shuddered.
“I can ask them again though if you’re too…distracted.”
You didn’t miss his choice of words.
“Too distracted?”
Chan looked at his hands uncomfortably.
“Some of the guys mentioned that you tend to, disappear after, you know, he comes around.”
“Let me guess. Some of the guys was Jeonghan wasn’t it?”
Chan tried to shake his head and deny but you knew you had guessed correctly. It wasn’t hard to miss the bitterness on Jeonghan’s face when you returned to the table after Soonyoung left the café that day. Or the way Jeonghan barely spoke more than 3 words to you on the way home, or the entire evening for that matter.
“He always gets like this. I don’t get why he can’t understand, it’s literally in the nature of my punishment to be like this!” you exclaim, frustrated. You look at Chan, who sits uncomfortably next to you and sigh in embarrassment.
“I’m sorry, you had questions. And I’m just blabbing here frustrated about my own situation.”
“That’s actually what my question was.” You quirk your eyebrow up at this. “I was hoping you could explain your punishment to me a bit more.”
You gulp, and finally nod in agreement. It was only fair that he got to know why everyone was here if he was going to spend the next 25 lifetimes with you.
“The actual love story isn’t that exciting or special really. Soonyoung and I met when we were kids in our original lifetime. Slowly, over time, we fell in love. We had all these plans, we were going to travel the world together. Then we’d get married, have kids, have a life and family to look back on. Then he got sick, really sick, really fast. I can still remember the day we found out. The doctors said he only had a few months to live…I could see written on his face, it was like he knew he wouldn’t even make it that long. He wanted me to move on and have a life without him. I wanted the exact opposite of that. I was desperate for anything that could keep him alive. I went to doctors, specialists, priests, even shamans. Anything that I thought could do something. Then I heard this rumor that if you went to a dark bar at the edge of town at 3 in the morning you’d meet Death there and you could exchange your soul in order for one wish to be granted. It sounds stupid, I know, but I was desperate. I had tried everything, and nothing. So, I went, and sure enough, there he was. I signed a contract that night. In the back of my mind I knew it was too good to be true, that nothing was ever as simple as that. But still I had hope. The next morning, he died.”
Chan looked at you, his eyes wide in surprised. “He died?” You nodded.
“The last few hours of his life and I was out searching for a way to make him live. So when Death came to my door demanding the souls I owed him. Well, I had to say no. Soonyoung was dead, I didn’t give a shit about souls or paying my debt. I just wanted my Soonyoung back. But, Death got me back in the end, didn’t he?”
Chan nodded looking at you. Still the confusion was written on his face, as it was on everyone’s face. To watch the one you love die, over and over again, was it really that fitting a punishment for your crime? Chan gulped, hesitancy on his face before he spoke.
“Did it…did you remember your entire past life right away?”
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t remember anything. My crime, my life. Nothing outside of my name.” Chan said, looking helplessly at his hands. You reached out and soothingly rubbed his back.
“You know, there’s another rumor amongst us souls. They say that Death was once like us too. A soul, one who’s crime was so irredeemable that he was punished by overseeing the death and punishment of every living soul under the universe’s dominion. They say he hates his job as much as we hate him for it.”
“Do you believe that?”
“I don’t know. The first 25 lifetimes were fucking tragedy for me. I mean, having to watch someone you love die, whatever the circumstance, that just sucks. And even though the vast majority of lifetimes he dies way too soon, every once in a while, Death gives us nearly the entire lifetime. Soonyoung doesn’t die too early. He lives a long, full life. And I only survive a few years longer. So sometimes, I think Death feels something, something almost like pity. In those moments, I think I believe that. I think he’s being punished just like us, and trying to figure out how to hurt us, but how to save us at the same time.”
“Save us?”
You look at Chan, putting a hand on his shoulder before answering him.
“Maybe it hurts not knowing anything about your past life. But maybe Death is sparing you from something worse?”
Chan nods, a small sense of relief falling over him. He smiles at you, genuinely and radiantly, and for a moment, the room seems to grow a bit brighter.
“Thanks Y/N,” he says, standing up and leaving the room.
“Anytime,” you call after him, picking up your phone.
To: Soonyoung
That sounds amazing. See you then : )
***
Chan slowly leaves Y/N’s room and is about to walk back to his when he lingers for a moment at Jeonghan’s closed door across from hers. Taking a deep breath, he knocks.
He hears a muffled “come in” before he slowly turns the knob, finding Jeonghan lying on his back and staring at the ceiling.
“Uh, hey?” Chan says, Jeonghan sitting up and smiling at the younger boy.
“What’s up Chan?”
“I just talked to Y/N…” Chan trailed off, not knowing where he was going with this. He wasn’t sure why he felt the need to come into Jeonghan’s room in the first place. He just knew the older boy had seemed down ever since this afternoon.
“And?”
“And, I noticed how upset you seemed earlier. I wanted to see if you’re okay?”
Jeonghan smiled, a slight hint of guilt playing on his face underneath.
“There’s a lot to unpack there Chan.”
“I have time! I’m a great listener. Trust me, Y/N just recounted her entire love saga to me.” Shit, probably shouldn’t have mentioned the whole Y/N head over heels thing in front of the guy who seems so upset over it.
“Did she now?” Jeonghan started, a flicker of annoyance flashing across his face. Chan guiltily looking at his feet. “Did she also mention that in every lifetime, all 100 now, the first name out of her mouth is never his?”
Chan looks up at this in surprise, seeing a small smile play on Jeonghan’s face, “Who’s name is it?” Chan asks cautiously.
“Mine.”

Tumblr media
Freeside is a slum that surrounds New Vegas, it’s inhabited by junkies and drunk people almost all the time. Some points of interest are The King’s School of Impersonation, the Atomic Wrangler casino, and Silver Rush, a place for all your energy weapon needs.
Tumblr media
But we decide to visit the Old Mormon Fort first, this is the home of The Followers of the Apocalypse, these people try and help those in need in and around Freeside with what they can. And someone I need to be on good terms with.
Boone: What are we doing here?
Freddie: I’m just exploring, Boone, I want to get a feel for Freeside before we find a way into the strip to find Benny.
Boone: We’re gonna help the people here, right?
Freddie: Yes, absolutely.
But not long after we get attacked by muggers! They don’t last very long against us so after dealing with them we can continue to make our way to the oldest place standing in Freeside.
~~~~~
Walking inside the walled fort there’s a pretty large camp set up inside, a flag with the Follower’s logo on it a cross inside a circle, tents all around the camp, and a sandbag barricade in front. We all take a look around and greet the people, I make my way to the southwestern tent to greet a man with blonde hair.
Freddie: Hello.
He turns around, holy moly.
Tumblr media
Arcade: Hi. If you're looking for medical help, try the other doctors. I'm just a researcher. Not even a particularly good one.
I shake my head and focus.
Freddie: What kind of research?
Arcade: Oh, you know. Finding alternative treatments for common illnesses and injuries. Stimpaks out of barrel cacti and other fantastic improbabilities. As far as fruitless wastes of time go, it's quite noble in its aims.
Freddie: What’s the goal?
Arcade: For the past hundred years or so, the Followers have managed to get by using salvaged medical supplies from the Old World. But the side effect of medical success is that more people live longer. Funny how that works.
He then looks sad.
Arcade: Eventually, we'll run out of hospitals to loot. We need new ways to produce those supplies. Or maybe old ways, if this research goes anywhere.
Freddie: What kinds of illnesses and injuries?
Arcade: Cuts, lacerations, broken bones. Infections resulting from all of the above. Common cold, influenza. Take your pick. There are plenty of ways to die out here, and most of them, surprisingly, don't have anything to do with war. Just common human fragility.
Freddie: You don't sound too enthusiastic about it.
I tilt my head as he pushes up his glasses.
Arcade: I'm enthusiastic about helping people, but nihil novi sub sole.
Freddie: Nihi-what?
Arcade: Oh. Sorry. "There is nothing new under the sun." If agave and mesquite were that miraculous, the locals would have figured it out a few thousand years ago.
This guy is starting to sound like someone in the Legion.
Freddie: Isn't that the language that Caesar's Legion speaks?
Arcade: Caesar can cite Cato to suit his purpose. Many people have spoken Latin. Some of them were quite pleasant. It's unfortunate that the language is now associated with the gentlemen across the river.
Wow, this guy is so smart and so handsome. No wait, I have to be serious here. Ahem.
Freddie: Where did you learn that?
Arcade: Not from the Legion, if that's what you're getting at. Books. Sheet music. Gladiator movie holotapes. Bits and pieces here and there. The Followers have extensive libraries, but we all draw water from the same old well. Even Caesar.
Freddie: So why do you do research instead of providing medical assistance?
Arcade: Not all Followers are "people persons." Besides, someone needs to do research. I have no problem with Julie sticking me back here. Out of sight, out of mind. There are worse things one can be, though I do admit, it is a bit boring. Though it has a noble goal, I don't think this research will yield much fruit. No pun intended.
Freddie: Well Arcade, do you and the Followers need any help?
Arcade: Me, specifically? No. I'm sure Julie Farkas does, though. Lab coat, pointy hair. Answers to the name "Julie Farkas," strangely enough.
Freddie: Why don't you come with me?
Arcade: No offense intended, but why should I go anywhere with you?
Time to work your magic, Freddie.
[Confirmed Bachelor] Freddie: I need a good-looking doctor to help take care of me in the big, bad wasteland.
With that, he laughs and places a hand over his glasses. I got him.
Arcade: Overt flirtation will get you everywhere, you know. On a slightly more serious note, if you're interested in helping out with the troubles plaguing Freeside, I can come with you. Just don't do anything obnoxious, like trying to help Caesar's Legion, and we should be fine. Understood?
Freddie: I’d never help the Legion, my other companion would have my head if I did especially after everything I did for him. After I get what was taken from me back from some guy on the strip, I plan on terrorizing the Legion just like they do us.
Arcade: Heh, I don’t think the Legion is going to be scared of you. Unless you take out Caesar and his legate, Lanius. But seeing as you’re asking me to come with you. You aren’t going to be doing that any time soon. Don’t get too cocky now.
When I go tell Boone the good news about Arcade, I can’t help but notice that he’s staring down ED-E. Does he have a problem with him? Maybe he’s seen ED-E before.
Freddie: Hey, Arcade, I can’t help notice that you seem to have a problem with ED-E here, what’s up?
Arcade: it just seems a bit twitchy. Some of these robots, you look at them the wrong way, don’t screw in a vacuum tube right… The next thing you know you’re a pile of ash on the floor and someone’s stepping out of a vertibird to sweep your remains into a Nuka-Cola bottle.
Freddie: Oooo-kay, I’ll keep my eye on him.
Arcade: Safety first. That’s all I’m saying.
Freddie: Let’s get going then.
~~~~~
We all head southwest towards the gate until an old man stops us.
Tumblr media
Old Ben: You look new to Freeside, so here’s a little advice, friend. Don’t go past the South Gate greeter without talking to it first.
Freddie: Going past it seems rude, why wouldn’t I want to go past the greeter?
Old Ben: Those bots are programmed to vaporize anyone who enters the fenced-in area without authorization from the greeter.
Freddie: Thanks for the advice.
He smiles and walks away towards a campfire near the gate. Let’s see what this robot says. I walk to the Securitron Gatekeeper.
Tumblr media
Securitron Gatekeeper: Submit to a credit check or present your passport before proceeding to the gate. Trespassers will be shot.
Freddie: Credit check? What’s that for?
Securitron Gatekeeper: Admission to the Strip requires an official passport or proof that you are carrying the required minimum balance.
Freddie: What’s the minimum balance?
Securitron Gatekeeper: 2,000 caps.
Freddie: 2,000 caps?! I don’t have that kind of cash! Uh, what else can I do?
Securitron Gatekeeper: If you are unable to meet the minimum balance requirement, an official passport is an acceptable alternative.
But after telling me about the passport he doesn’t say where I can get one, wow thanks robot. The gang takes a step back.
Arcade: I heard of a shop called “Mick and Ralph’s” who sells things you can’t buy anywhere else.
Freddie: You think I can buy an unofficial official passport from them?
Arcade: Who’s to say?
Arcade tries to act very sly about it, after all, I did flirt with him so he could join my team because he wasn’t convinced I was good enough to travel with. Guess I must just have a thing for doctors. Or researchers, whatever he is. Lab coat people.
~~~~~
Tumblr media
Ralph: If you’re looking for guns, talk to Mick. Otherwise, I’ve got a nice selection of general supplies.
Freddie: Do you offer any other services?
Ralph: I only offer services if The King gives the okay. Impress him and we can talk.
I’ll do whatever the King’s have in store for me another time, maybe I can get the passport out of this guy in a different way.
[Speech 50] Freddie: A resource fellow such as yourself must have something on the side.
[Succeeded] Ralph: All right. Yeah, I’ve got a little side business going, but what I am about to share with you does not leave this room, eh? Over the years, I’ve gradually perfected my craft to the point of perfection. No one can distinguish between my work and the real thing. What I am referring to is a passport. If you’ve got the caps, I can whip up a Strip passport which will fool even the most well-trained eye.
Freddie: Ah, now I see why you want to keep this low key.
Ralph: Hey, if you’re interested and have the caps, they go for 500. Any less and it ain’t worth the risk of getting caught. What do you say? You game?
You’ve gotta be kidding me… Looks like I’ll have to barter with him.
[Barter 50] Freddie: No way your material and expenses require that. How about half?
[Succeeded] Ralph: Hah! I like your style, kid, but the best I can do is meet you halfway. 375 caps, and we can call it a deal.
He says with much enthusiasm.
Freddie: 375 works great. Okay, I’ll take one.
I hand over the caps and he hands over the passport. Sweet! I bid Mick and Ralph goodbye and make the way back to gate.
[Passport] Freddie: I’ve got a passport.
Securitron Gatekeeper: Thank you, sir. You may proceed.
With that, we can finally open the main gate to New Vegas.
~~~~~
Before I can stare at New Vegas in awe, I’m approached by a familiar face.
Tumblr media
Victor: Howdy, pardner! You’ve come a far piece, haven’t you? Welcome to New Vegas!
What the hell is this guy’s deal?! Why is he everywhere I go?!
Boone: Why is this robot following us?
Freddie: He’s the one who dug me out of my grave after all. What are you doing here?
Victor: Consider me your personal welcome wagon! Now hear this - the head honcho of New Vegas, Mr. House, is itching to make your acquaintance.
Arcade: Did he just say Mr. House?
Freddie: It seems like you pop up everywhere.
Victor: Aw shucks, pardner. I suppose it can’t hurt to let you in on my little secret! Old Victor wouldn’t be much use stuck inside just one Securitron! No, I can move from one to another with the snap of a finger! Pretty nice trick, ain’t it? Just don’t ask me how I do it, because I don’t know!
Freddie: All right, I’ll go meet Mr. House right now.
Victor: Yeehaw, pardner! That’s the spirit. He’ll be waiting for you.
He quickly makes his way to the front of the Lucky 38 casino and I follow behind him.
Victor: Boss is waiting for ya upstairs, so get a move on!
A massive gate behind him opens up and we all walk on inside.
