Valjean.

One of the things that is Very Relevant to Valjean is that a huge part of his character is Taking Care of Kids.

It’s something that is written as largely automatic and unconscious to him. From his hand moving to the head heights of his nieces and nephews at his trial, to the way he doesn’t protest when his sister gives them the best part of his meal, to the way he pays for the milk they ‘borrow’, without thinking about it. It’s for them that he steals the bread; that’s why he ends up in prison. The whole purpose of his life – he has no time or energy for friends or lovers or anything else- is taking care of these kids.

And he fails. He never sees any of them again. The family is split up. Six of the kids just…disappear. If they don’t die of illness or privation, they’ll die on the streets or in jail as young adults. His punishment is not just the destruction of his life, but theirs.

Contrast this to the way he unthinkingly steals from Petit Gervais, and how horrified he his when he comes to his senses, at the way that Toulon has fundamentally affected him and his almost unconscious actions. It is really telling that it’s this moment that changes him, not just the Bishop’s actions, but the two things together.

In Montreuil, he is SUPER AWKWARD. He’s a thoughtful, introspective person. He smiles to avoid talking, gives to avoid smiling and BREAKS INTO PEOPLES HOUSES AND LEAVES THEM MONEY, in order to avoid Social Interaction™ WTF Valjean? But he is also helpful, because he can’t resist it and all the kids love him because he makes them toys out of straw and coconuts.

(Full disclosure: as a Socially Awkward person who suffered from PTSD and a related dissociative disorder who also works a lot with kids, it is possible I have maybe identified a little too much with Jean Valjean at times, ok??)

One of the main reasons that Javert gives us for believing Champmatheiu is Valjean is not just because of the physical resemblance, but because he’s having the same kind of reaction to trauma.

Because that is the other Fundamental Character Trait I associate with Valjean – Hugo has some of the best-written accounts of dissociation I have ever read. Valjean is SUPER DISSOCIATIVE.

Except that BBC Valjean….isn’t.

He’s afraid, sure. He’s shouty (so shouty!)

And I …sort of get why they made him that way, in order to externalise some of Valjean’s inner conflict. But I also think that it a) doesn’t work and b) says some really ugly and unfortunate things about the UK North/South class divide. (Which is a shame, bc I love the conceit of the different dialects)

Brick!Valjean does some terrible things sure. It takes him AGES to get Cosette. The whole part when he tells her the Thenardiess is after her to get her over the convent wall, and then JUST FORGETS that he said it and leaves her in terror for the whole night is BAD! But he himself is acting unthinkingly out of terror. One of the recurring themes of JVJ in Les Mis is the way that living in terror can reduce a person to nothing but unthinking, animal instinct.

And that’s the problem: BBC Valjean is far too in control, almost all the time. All of his actions, from the very first episode, are of someone trying to regain/gain control of the world around him. BBC Valjean probably would have succeeded in escaping from Toulon, or else not tried again. He’s violent and controlling towards Cosette, in a way that Brick!Valjean…isn’t. Brick!Valjean is mostly only a dick to himself, and he refuses, or at least tries hard not to let it affect Cosette.

Brick!Valjean tries SO HARD to put Cosette first. His relationship with her is Problematic, sure. He sees her far too much as an ideal. She’s his Purpose, and that by itself is unhealthy. But also, the whole relationship dynamic between him and Teenage!Cosette is based on each trying to spare the other their sadness. “These two beings, who had loved each other so exclusively, and with so touching a love, and who had lived so long for each other, were now suffering by each other, and through each other; without speaking of it, without harsh feeling, and smiling the while” He stays up all night, worrying about her and trying to see things from her point of view, to understand what might be going on in her head.

He doesn’t fucking drag her about by the wrist and having shouting matches with her, JFC. Brick!Valjean would be incapable of taking Cosette to see the wagons of prisoners on purpose as punishment/lesson.

In the book, when they ACCIDENTALLY (fuck you Davies) come across the convicts, he’s having a shitty, shitty time, but it’s the effect of the sight on Cosette that worries him. He spends the whole next day taking her to the fair, so she’ll forget about it.

Like, one of things that always kind of distressed me about their relationship, is that he is so concerned with Cosette being happy that she is never really allowed to face up to the fact that her childhood really did happen, and that she can accept and move on from it. He never really sees her as the same sort of complex person that he knows himself to be, and neither does Marius and she deserves better.

THAT DOESN’T MEAN I WANTED TO SEE HER ROCKING UNDER A TABLE BECAUSE HE DRAGGED HER TO HER CHILDHOOD NIGHTMARE WTF DAVIES??!!

And its so weird to me, because quite a few of the scenes from the BBC adaptation are almost word-for-word Brick accurate.  The casting is great, the sets are great. Grantaire and Gavroche (and all the Thenardiers, really, excluding Those Dreadful Scenes With Marius) are PERFECT (let’s not talk about NotEnjolras, ok)

But such a huge part of Valjean is how Toulon changed him (in both positive and negative ways), and we just…don’t get that. We don’t see who he was before Toulon, and how that carried through, and we don’t see the terrible effect of that traumatic experience. We don’t even see him saving that guy’s life on the Orion. West!Valjean is just a Shouty Man From Sheffield. And honestly, if that’s what you’re looking for, Dr Who does it better.

Yashere began and built a successful comedy career in the UK, going from winning prestigious comedy contests to occasional appearances on The Lenny Henry Show and celebrity panel shows to headlining sold out gigs at the Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo. The next step would have been getting her own TV show, which only a handful of black British comedians have been able to do. Besides Henry, Richard Blackwood had a show from 1999-2001 and Stephen K Amos had a brief run in 2010. And now there’s 29-year-old Michaela Coel, the creator and star of the hilarious E4 series Chewing Gum. However, 10 years ago, Yashere found herself stuck, unable to take her career any further if she stayed in Britain.

“I’ve definitely had a lot more opportunities given to me in America,” Yashere says. “I’ve sold three comedy specials in America.” These were to heavy-hitting channels: her special Skinny B*tch aired on Showtime, for example, and she sold Ticking Boxes, an hour-long performance filmed at Brixton Academy, to NBC-owned Seeso. Meanwhile, says Yashere: “I’ve never had any of my specials aired anywhere on British TV. If I’d sat in England waiting for someone to give me a TV show, I’d still be there, being the token black face on Mock the Week. That, to me, is a slap in the face.”

There’s still a glass ceiling for black comics in America, Yashere says, but “at least when you hit [it] in America, you’re a multimillionaire so it’s not so painful”. Yashere says she isn’t at multimillionaire status yet, but she’s getting there. She’s been working in the US for a decade now and is on the verge of becoming a household name, recently landing a correspondent gig on The Daily Show, Trevor Noah’s late-night news satire programme on Comedy Central. She made her inaugural appearance on the show in March with a segment called Ask the Brexpert.

Brexperting on The Daily Show is a long way away from Yashere’s first job out of school as a lift engineer. Her mum wanted her to have a “proper job”, Yashere says, rather than be a “clown”. It certainly doesn’t sound as if lift-engineering was much of a laugh. As a lone black woman on a building site of more than 2,000 white men, Yashere stuck out, and not in a good way. “I was more qualified than most of the guys I was working with, which they hated. I’d come into work and there’d be a banana skin stuck to my overalls or a picture of a monkey on my coat.”

Eventually, Yashere took voluntary redundancy and decided to spend a summer trying out standup before looking for another engineering job. That other job never happened because it turned out that she was pretty good at the whole comedy thing. Within six months of doing standup, she came second in the 1996 Hackney Empire New Act of the Year, one of the most important comedy contests in the UK. That got her an appearance on Jonathan Ross’s The Big Big Talent show, and things built from there.

Some of her early success, Yashere believes, was a result of her being different. “I wasn’t like every other comedian at the time because I was coming from a different perspective. I was an outsider looking in. And I was even different from all the other black comics on the scene because a lot of them were of Caribbean origin and a lot of their jokes were poking fun at Africans. So I got my first taste of success quite quickly just from being different. It was taking it to the next level that was difficult.”

Yashere’s comedy tends to revolve around being a fish out of water, the tensions inherent in being born in London but having Nigerian roots, or a black Brit in America. “I used to get criticisms like: ‘All she talks about is being black,’” Yashere says. “No, I don’t. I talk about me. The fact that I’m a black woman is what you’re seeing. When Peter Kay talks about his northern roots and his family, nobody goes: ‘Peter Kay, all he talks about is being northern.’ As far as they’re concerned, it’s just another aspect of white culture. But when black comics talk about our culture, then it’s like: ‘Ugh, her being black again.’”

Worse, Yashere is sometimes not black enough for her critics. “There was one Guardian reviewer [she pauses to give me an accusatory look] who said: ‘She doesn’t delve deep enough in to the African experience.’ I was like: ‘What the fuck are you talking about? I’m from London. I’m talking about my experiences of being London-born, but of Nigerian heritage. How deep do I need to delve?’”

In the US, Yashere came up against a different set of stereotypes: America’s view of Brits is definitely more John Oliver than Gina Yashere. “I’d come on stage and open my mouth and people would be like, ‘What the fuck is this?…w Who is this?’” Yashere says. “Most Americans don’t know there’s black people in England. They’re starting to know now with people like Idris [Elba] and [the singer] Estelle, and all the actors doing really well and the musicians, but when I came out here in 2007 they had no idea.”

Yashere first moved to the US to appear on a TV show called Last Comic Standing. She was given a two-year work visa, but she knew she was there for the long run. She put her house on the market, sold or gave away everything she owned, and moved to Los Angeles with just two suitcases to her name. Within a couple of months she became the first British comedian to appear on Def Comedy Jam, the enormously successful HBO series that launched the careers of Chris Tucker and Dave Chappelle. She also made regular appearances on The Tonight Show.

Despite these successes, it took a while to build up a reputation and to adjust to life in the US. There’s the chocolate for one thing. As Yashere says: “American chocolate is fucking disgusting.” As is the US healthcare system. Shortly after Yashere moved to LA, she ended up in hospital for a night because of a Lupus flare-up. “They tried to charge me $15,000 [£11,500],” she says. “I was like: ‘I didn’t have an operation. How can you justify this? $15,000!’ So, I called them up and said: ‘I’m not paying this. I’m not from here and I will get on a plane and disappear. Then I heard the woman typing away on her computer and she said: ‘OK, if you pay $4,000 today, that’s the end of it. I’m like: ‘Are you fucking serious? This whole thing’s a scam.’ So that was my first major wake-up call to life in America.”

Americans don’t just have different healthcare to Britain, they have different notions of what’s funny. However, Yashere says she hasn’t really had to adjust her material. “My sense of humour has always been quite in-your-face. I haven’t got that quintessential dry British humour, so my style fits in quite well.” However, she does find she has to explain things. “A lot of Americans have never been outside America. So if I’m doing something about Malaysia, say, I have to explain where Malaysia is and what the culture is before I go into the joke.”

What are her current jokes about? Do they focus on recent political events? She shrugs. “I talk about a myriad of things. I talk about Trump a bit, I talk about the travel ban, I talk about pissing myself at McDonald’s seven feet from the toilet. Yeah, I had an accident a few weeks ago. Basically anything that happens to me is new material. I went to a restaurant, drank half a litre of water, then tried to get home on the subway and wanted to get to the bathroom. Get to McDonald’s where you can’t go to the bathroom unless you buy a burger. So I pissed myself in the middle of McDonald’s. It’s the most embarrassing thing, but yet ...” But yet, whether it’s racism or restroom mishaps, everything is material. And if Yashere has anything to do with it then it’s material that will likely have you wetting yourself with laughter. Just, hopefully, not in a McDonald’s.

Rose Leslie is distracted. Outside her window in Brooklyn a passer-by has fallen over on a patch of black ice and she can’t stop giggling. Storm Stella recently hit and New York has only just re-emerged from the state of emergency called by its mayor. It’s fine to laugh, she tells me, because the passer-by has got up and walked off, but she’s now positioned herself away from the window in case any more slapstick comedy strikes. Although she’s a big fan of comedy, the Scottish-born actress made her name playing serious-minded characters who are British to the bone. She first came to attention in 2010 as Gwen, a housemaid who betters herself and waved goodbye to Downton Abbey before the end of the first series. Next, in that other globally successful television juggernaut Game Of Thrones, she nailed the Yorkshire accent playing the fiery wildling Ygritte, Jon Snow’s enemy-turned-lover. There has also been a brief spell as a policewoman alongside Idris Elba in Luther. Right now, Leslie is feeling a bit nostalgic for ol’ Blighty, which may explain why she’s binge-watching The Replacement and This Country on BBC iPlayer. “I am obsessed with This Country,” she confesses. “The script is so astute about who they are representing – it manages to find the delicate balance of being truthful without belittling.” It’s been five months since the 30-year-old left her London flat for America to play a role that is completely different to her previous work: a high-flying lawyer in modern day Chicago. In The Good Fight – a new 10-episode spin-off from the eminently watchable The Good Wife, which finished last year after seven series – senior partner of the parent show’s law firm Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) loses her life savings in a financial scam. But, in the tenacious female fashion of the original show, she sets up shop afresh with her goddaughter Maia Rindell (played by Leslie) and Lucca Quinn (played by fellow Brit Cush Jumbo) in another distinguished Chicago legal firm. Already critically acclaimed in the US, The Good Fight does not shy away from contemporary politics, covering topics such as fake news and police brutality. Leslie admits that the opportunity to live in New York for five months while filming the show was a perk she couldn’t refuse, but Brooklyn is a long way from her family’s 15th-century castle in Aberdeenshire where she grew up with her four siblings (a stint in a Somerset boarding school put paid to her Scottish burr) before arriving in London aged 18 to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Her background may be lofty but in conversation Leslie is anything but. She is naturally warm, engaging, laughs often (and hard) and has impeccable manners. Until someone falls over on a patch of ice, that is… With the success of Downton Abbey and Game Of Thrones, it seems like you have the golden touch when it comes to choosing TV shows to work on. What attracted you to The Good Fight? I was late to the party with The Good Wife but so many of my friends loved it. When I finally gave it a go, I thought the writing was fantastic and I was pulled in by the fact that [writers] Michelle and Robert King wrote so powerfully and beautifully for women. The characters are intelligent, passionate women who are struggling with climbing the prickly ladder to the top of the legal profession. It’s not an easy path but the story lines aren’t obvious. The script was completely engrossing. It features a lot of strong women who show a sense of solidarity with one another. How significant is that element to the show? There is definitely an aura and an atmosphere on set, which hopefully translates on screen, of solidarity among all the female lawyers within this particular firm. You don’t see perfect women who can juggle all the aspects of their lives. They are struggling with the workplace environment. Something that I greatly believe in is the fight that one should have for those who are being unjustly targeted, and I think the writers execute this brilliantly by highlighting the political climate right now in the US. I don’t necessarily believe that I should be a political commentator but I’m proud to be working on a show that feels it has a duty to hold up a mirror to the political landscape and therefore provide an element of accountability. Was there anything that bonded you and Cush Jumbo as Brits on set? It sounds ridiculous but honestly, from the beginning it was tea. We were asked whether we wanted water on set and both Cush and I replied, “Er, can we have some tea?” We fell into the trap of being a cliché but the first thing that bonded us was our love for tea. What have you found challenging about working away from home? I’ve missed my friends’ 30th birthdays and I’ve missed weddings. But please, that’s fine, this is not a violin session right now. I am working with some wonderful people, but I do miss the pub, our sh*t weather, being able to hop on the Victoria Line and cross the city. But that’s only because I’ve lived in London for about 11 years and I very much consider it home. But I have most certainly embraced New York, it’s a fabulous city. Was growing up in a castle in the Scottish countryside as idyllic as it sounds? My siblings and I spent most of our days rolling around in puddles, clambering through bushes and climbing trees – it was glorious. As soon as I hear a wood pigeon I’m immediately transported back there. It’s the one place on earth where I feel very settled and grounded and at peace. My parents still live there and it’s an amazing place to come home to. In The Good Fight, your character Maia comes from a very privileged background but is desperate to prove her own worth. Is that something you’ve ever identified with? I was never oblivious [to] the challenges that an actor would face leaving drama school. At the time I felt lucky to get into LAMDA. Then you’re going to need a huge amount of luck on your side. I loved it so much though; there was never a feeling of having to prove my worth to anyone. Ygritte’s most famous line – “You know nothing, Jon Snow” – has now become a catchphrase. How did you become so talented at accents? At drama school we had an hour-long accent lesson every other day for almost three years. One of the dialects I responded to most was the northern one and I ended up playing a northern lass in a touring production for five months before Game Of Thrones, which was lucky as it helped me sound relatively authentic. There are still so many I can’t do though. I long to be able to do a South African accent but I’m terrible at it and am too ashamed to attempt it in public. If you weren’t an actor, what would be your Plan B career? I would have pursued a career in psychology – it’s so interesting. I think this leads into why I am an actor – it’s a fascination I have always had with behaviour, body language and the reasoning behind why one reacts the way they do. I read that Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow in Game Of Thrones, told a police officer about his character’s fate to get out of a speeding ticket. Is there anything you would spill Game Of Thrones secrets for? Probably something horribly self-involved like getting into a Bear’s Den gig. I happened to see them when they were here a couple of months ago and they packed out the Williamsburg Music Hall. I respectfully paid for that ticket but if I couldn’t have seen them? Well, I would be tempted… But I don’t know any spoilers. I’m actually completely clueless as to what is going to happen next season. What do you do to switch off? I am currently in Williamsburg and there is a pottery studio about two blocks away from me, so in the evenings I’ve been taking classes to entertain myself. So far I’ve made a couple of bowls and handle-less mugs – there’s no way I could set a handle on there! I’d like to think I��m channelling Demi Moore in Ghost but I really am so bad at it. The lovely instructor does most of it for me. Finally, what’s the first thing you’ll do when you get back to London? Have some baked beans on toast. I was devastated when the supermarket here didn’t have Heinz ones and I don’t trust the American version. They are my ultimate home comfort.

Working From Home | Daily Routine, Productivity, Procrastination

Adjusting to the new normal in the current climate caused by COVID-19 is a challenge for us all. Huge swathes of the workforce are now working from home and still required to work in effective teams…and as normally as possible…whatever that now means! For many, this is the norm, for others they’ve worked from home on occasion so have a routine in place, but for some this is a brand-new experience. Remote working successfully can be achieved with the right systems and mindsets, so let’s follow on from my last article with a look at how we can work successfully from home, even in these strange and testing time.

As well as many people are now in the position of having to work from home and many are being furloughed, there are others who may have lost some of their livelihood due to the closure of shops, restaurants, and other businesses. Whole industries have ground to a halt, especially those that served – or depended on – travel and tourism.

Of course, there are always opportunities in every situation.  For example, eCommerce is on the up as people are now at home a lot more and cannot buy from regular stores, so it is understandable why more businesses are taking this route.

Living without a full income can be extremely trying, which is why the more ingenious amongst us are looking at new revenue streams from taking their bricks and mortar stores online, whilst remaining in line with government guidelines of using the post offices, to monetizing online programs and courses.

Successfully working from home takes discipline, planning, and real commitment. Many people may relish the opportunity, but it is also understandable if you don’t. Here we’re looking more closely at how to set up for success and make the most of this unusual situation for the benefit of your business or career.

Routine and good habits

It might sound boring and the last thing you need to hear in a time of crisis, but routine can be absolutely key to managing working from home. It can also be key to keeping your mental health in check and ensuring you’re able to effectively keep up with your work. It’s not just about the health of your marketing strategy or your database!

Stick to a regular morning routine

Getting up, getting dressed, washed and brushing your teeth should be a standard beginning to every workday. Keeping this regular routine is key to good mental health and beyond this, it ensures you’re ready if there are meetings to attend and you can’t afford to not be attending if the rest of the office is!

Exercise for your body and mind

Whether you join in with the kids and the new sensation of Joe Wicks or take advantage of your chance to have one run around the block or a short cycle, a bit of exercise goes a long way. Replace what would have been your daily commute with a bit of exercise to ensure you’re awake and ready for the working day.

Check in and be kind

Our mental health is bound to take a bit of a kick when we’re all inside and unable to follow our usual routines. Be sure to spend time checking in with friends, colleagues and others and be ready to listen and help if someone isn’t all right. Kindness is key to making it through this difficult period and understanding that other people’s reactions may be different to yours is important too.

Set aside workspace

Although not every home has room for a dedicated office, it is essential you have space set aside for when you work. Whether it means shutting the bedroom door or taking over the guest room, you need a space away from the family so you can focus on work. You can be sure there will be plenty of BBC Dad moments over the next few weeks, but you can’t afford for there to be too many.  (But just smile and laugh when it does happen…we’re only human!)

Fight procrastination

You might dedicate a small part of your day to LinkedIn engagements and other social media but don’t get dragged in. As soon as you click on one of these sites you can be sure there will be plenty of recommendation of self-improvement webinars you simply must watch or books you should be reading.

Do everything at your own pace and once the workday is done, do things your own way. Whether this is downtime in front of the TV, your short daily walk, a little meditation (the Headspace app is particularly helpful) or even a nap, do something that works for you and helps you keep a level head in these difficult times.

Keep productive

Keeping productive at home is one of the biggest challenges. A productive workday involves following the steps already mentioned but also taking advantage of the tools and software out there to help make your working day easier. The most effective way people are staying productive and checking in with work is through video calls and conferencing.

While we’re not in the same world as a few months ago, poor conference call practices were shown to cost businesses billions by LoopUp and now we’re even more reliant upon them, it’s important to get to grips with the latest methods for keeping on top of work and being connected to your team.

FaceTime and Skype have regularly been used for conference calling for many years, with Google Hangouts also proving popular. However, it has been Zoom which has become the standout tool of the current situation. Zoom has floated a little below the radar for many years, although it has been successfully growing at a speed quicker than we may have imagined.

FT.com reported Zoom shares jumping 6% on the day that Wall Street saw a 3% tumble overall and the company continues to go from strength to strength as it is being used for everything from family reunions to international conferencing between employees around the globe. The key to Zoom’s success and growth seems to fall into three key areas:

Customer-driven experiences are at the heart of all they do

It’s a self-selling product

Investing large amounts in the company is something they are more than committed to doing

Zoom makes it easier than ever before to quickly team up with any number of individuals from your workplace and have regular check-ins to ensure things are going in the right direction.

A word on phishing

While all of us are working from home and are pretty convinced connections are secure, it is important to be vigilant about the risks from IT security.  New phishing scams relating to the COVID19 outbreak are being discovered every day and unscrupulous individuals are bound to continue to try and exploit the crisis.  Keeping your connection as secure as possible may involve looking into more secure firewall products or liaising with your company’s IT department to ensure everything is secure as it can be. Extra vigilance is essential for ensuring online safety as you work.

Internet speeds to improve

UK broadband caps have been lifted so no one should have issues with managing the volume of data/downloads required for your work. However, internet speeds have been put under a huge amount of stress.

Enrique Blanco, CTO at Telefonica in Spain told sources: “In just two days we grew all the traffic we had planned for 2020”; ad statistics are showing similar in many countries, with the demand for the internet outstripping he availability. Ookla reported the average time it took to download videos, emails and files increased due to broadband speeds declining as much as 5% from previous weeks.

Measures are being put in place to improve things and there are individual changes we can make to ensure our speeds are as fast as they can be. It may take a little patience on our parts but with so many changes upon us, it is something else we will soon get to grips with.

Making a success of your work from home time

Working from home may not be something you’d ever choose to do or even done before, but there aren’t any other options right now. With a little discipline and a lot of kindness, we can work together to ensure our workplaces can still exist, just from afar. There’s the opportunity to add a bit of morale-boosting fun through Zoom calls and it’s important to make sure you check in on colleagues, as they should check in on you.

Eight+ Things to Read About China and Other Things, Part 20

This is the twentieth episode in our ongoing Saturday series on eight+ things to read about China and a lot more. We constantly get emails from readers asking what to read on China and all sorts of things related and even barely related to China and this series is intended to constantly and consistently answer these questions.

As we said in our initial post on this, our plan is to list out eight (or so) articles we benefitted from reading and think you our readers would also benefit from reading, along with a very brief explanation as to why the particular article was included. More specifically:

The articles will likely include many on China and on Asia and a few on international trade, international politics, Spain and Latin America, economics and really just anything else we believe might benefit our readers or even that we just want people to read. We do not plan to choose articles that push our or any other political agenda or any other agenda for that matter, but having said that, we are not objective and our views may creep through. Our goal though is to focus on articles that are important or helpful or — most importantly — that make you think. Our posting of an article will NOT mean we agree with all of it or even any of it. Most of the articles will be from the week preceding the post but we will also sometimes throw in older articles (classics if you will) as well.

1.  A Mysterious Pencil Factory Sharpens Focus On Tariff Scams. NPR. Because tariff abuse is incredibly rampant in large part because many do not realize that it can and does lead to jail time. Because our international trade lawyers worked on a case that led to a $62.5 million settlement against a subsidiary of Univar for allegedly “mishandling” the location from which it was getting its saccharin. Because there are going to be a ton more of these cases in the next few years and companies need to know that skirting U.S. tariffs is a bad idea. 2. An acclaimed French chef is suing over a lost Michelin star. It all started with a cheesy allegation. Washington Post. Because we live in the age of ranking services. Because the validity of nearly all ranking services are overrated but because of that, they can matter for your business. Because I spent two years of my life living in France (Aix-en- Provence and in Tours) I totally grasp how unbelievably insulting it is to be accused of having used cheddar cheese in a soufflé. 3. All-Time Player Rankings: NBA’s Top 50 Revealed. Bleacher Report. Because for a large chunk of my life, basketball was everything. Because with the exception of relegating Pistol Pete Maravich to an honorable mention and not ranking Elgin Baylor high enough it does a pretty good job.

4. Harvesting organs to serve a thriving global market. Quartz. Because where there is constant smoke there is nearly always fire. Because the world needs to know.

5. Nasdaq cracks down on IPOs of Chinese companies. Because even though President Trump has said he is backing down from blocking Americans from investing in Chinese companies it is going to get increasingly tougher for Chinese companies to list on U.S. stock exchanges or even to remain listed.

6. Mapped: The World’s Largest Exporters. Virtual Capitalist. Because the graphic is way cool and super revealing. Because the only countries to export more than 500 billion dollars in product a year are the China ($2.5 trillion), the United States ($1.7 trillion), Germany ($1.6 trillion), Japan ($738 billion) The Netherlands $723 billion, South Korea ($605 billion,  and Italy $547 billion). Oh, and Hong Kong shows up at $569 billion, but much of that is really from the PRC. I am shocked Germany is so close to the U.S., that Italy is so high and that India is so low (at $326 billion). I am delighted Spain shows up so high at $345 billion because we have offices there and because a bunch of our lawyers will be speaking in both Madrid and Barcelona in early November.

7. Chinese citizens must pass a facial-recognition test to use the internet as part of Beijing’s social credit system. Daily Mail. Because nothing need even be said about this.

8. Five Charts That Will Change The Way You Think About Racial Inequality. Forbes. Because “most Americans assume the wealth gap between white and black families with post-graduate educations is virtually negligible. The truth is that black families with post-graduate degrees are still only worth about 30 cents to every white families’ dollar.” Because most Americans believe that racism has pretty much ended and then completely ignore that holding people back for hundreds of years does not immediately mean they are at the same starting line as everyone else. Because if you truly look at these charts it likely will change how you think about racial inequality.

9. Goldman Says Up to $4 Billion Moved From Hong Kong to Singapore Amid Unrest. Bloomberg. Because there are still some people who insist Hong Kong will be just fine. Because my law firm’s immigration lawyers are seeing an increase in all sorts of people fleeing Hong Kong for the United States and the EU.

10. Zika Was Soaring Across Cuba. Few Outside the Country Knew. New York Times. Because it shows a government’s ability to keep things quiet. Because I went to Cuba with my family while Zika was raging instead of Oaxaca because I was concerned about my two daughters.

11. Why Chinese and U.S. Stakeholders Should Listen Carefully to What PLO Lumumba Has to Say. The China/Africa Project. Because Lumumba does have a lot to say and for many who fail to listen it will be at their peril. Because whatever China giveth with the one hand as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, it taketh with the other hand. 12. The teenager married too many times to count. BBC. Because sex trafficking is bad enough, but when done by religious clerics to children as young as nine years old and all the while justifying it on religious grounds, it seems even more horrible.

Weekend reading: I shopped til I dropped

What caught my eye this week.

I would have had this post to you much earlier on Friday, but for consumerism. You see I got totally distracted trying to get the best out of my new Sage Barista Express:

Real life: Messy.

Having done a barista training course a few years ago, I improbably fancied myself as pretty hot stuff with a coffee grinder.

I’ve enjoyed flat whites knocked out by a friend on this well-reviewed model many times, too.

But it turns out I didn’t know my friend as well as I thought I did!

I’ve discovered he’s great at making coffee – but perhaps more shockingly that he’s modest about it. (What other talents does he boast, I now wonder? Or rather does he not boast?)

Seriously, I know it takes a while to get the hang of DIY espressos on new kit, so I’m not too perturbed. It’s only eaten a couple of hours so far, and that includes washing the bits and bobs, figuring out how it fitted together, and collecting beans I spilled on the floor.

No, the other reason why I fell behind was because as soon this new toy finally arrived from Amazon, I went out for a three-hour hike around West London.

Did you sign for it, sir?

You see I’ve been in all week waiting for deliveries – and it drives me crazy.

I’m on edge all-day, until the deliveries do (or don’t) arrive.

A laid-back friend who doesn’t understand my hair-trigger control freak personality asked me what the big deal was.

“Imagine waiting all day to be slapped in the face,” I said. “You don’t know when it’s coming, but you will be slapped in the face. That’s me waiting for the door buzzer.”

It’s not even that I can’t do the social interaction bit. It’s worse: I usually talk the delivery person’s ear off. (A common failing among those of us who work from home.)

Rather it’s the waiting and uncertainty that kills me – and the unexpected and unscheduled state change.

Years before the Millennials I kept my mobile on silent always, for the same reason.

A totally unexpected phone call to my mobile feels like being tapped on the shoulder by a suddenly apparating supernatural nosy neighbour. I hate it.

Now at this point you’re either nodding along (a very few of you) or you’re aghast with incomprehension. Which is fine.

(I’ve said before when explaining why I invest actively and nearly everyone reading shouldn’t that I’m wired differently. I didn’t say it was easy!)

Economy class

Anyway, the reason I’m sharing these asides – and the rare from real-life picture above – is to give a quick update on my embrace of consumerism.

The story so far: You’ll remember I bought a flat, I still haven’t written up why, and I set about spending some of my 20-odd years of winnings (well, savings and winnings) to make it fancy.

This got off to a good start. I’ve always loved nice furnishings and so on – from afar. But by the middle of the hot summer I was bored of spending money.

I’d lost enthusiasm, I’d lost my girlfriend (she said she didn’t like my sudden interiors obsession, but perhaps she just didn’t like the sofa I finally selected?), and I’d lost (/spent) more money traded for matter than I’d spent on things in the previous two decades combined.

I didn’t even go crazy! It’s just that living like a graduate student even as your earnings multiply is pretty low-rent.

For most of that long era I used to opine to my more normally spendy friends that buying stuff only produced problems. Which in my experience was almost always true.

Stuff didn’t work, or you had to upgrade something else, or it broke, or you felt guilty, or you had to wait in for days to get it delivered, or you were worried it’d get nicked when finally you did get hold of it – or any one of a dozen other woes that people who buy stuff all the time think is just the way the world is.

Only two things hit the spot for me without fail when I splashed the cash. Black cabs – which I almost never took, and felt so luxurious in those pre-Uber days – and the first beer with two poppadoms and all the sauces and other gubbins.

Obviously I did a gazillion other things over the decades. I didn’t just taxi around London from curry house to curry house! And often it was money well spent.

But never reliably so.

Well, this whole flat buying and furnishing thing has proven my younger self right.

Through the keyhole

Don’t get me wrong. It’s coming along. It looks beautiful, to me if not my ex. I feel lucky to live among all these things I chose in my still-new flat, even knowing luck is only part of it.

But, oh! I guess I secretly thought the universe would notice The Investor Is Finally Throwing Money At The Problem and the rules would change. But they haven’t.

Stuff comes broken. Trades people don’t show up. Some of them are great, but some are – well – yet to find their true calling. Deliveries don’t arrive. I made a final push to finish my flat before Christmas, and caned the Black Friday offers. But only three of the seven resultant purchases that were scheduled for delivery have actually made it here so far. A new record of rubbishness.

Coffee machines are harder to use than you expected. Analine leather sofas stain if you sneeze near them. Complete automatic watering systems require add-ons to water completely. Your boiler is already up for a service – and that’ll be £100+ with VAT please.

I feel sometimes like Robinson Crusoe, finally back on the mainland after a long sabbatical away catching fresh fish with his hands and brushing his teeth with a fragrant root. I can confirm 2018 has a lot of gorgeous stuff on offer – but as we all know it comes at a price and doesn’t really solve anything.

Still happy I did it, but pleased I’m mostly buying things that will last.

Once I’m done the hedonic treadmill is going back into storage!

Note: Yes, it’s an expensive coffee machine (though one of the cheaper good ones). I’ve always liked a few quality things in life, I’ve just tended to get them cheaply. I saved about half my income for 20 years, so while the Frugal Police are welcome to give me a caution, keep in mind that I wrote the (racier) pages of the book you’re throwing at me. And beware Buffett’s Folly…

Last Friday, Syfy gave us a new image and premiere date for Krypton, the Superman prequel series set on his native planet about 200 years before his birth. It’ll arrive March 21.

Over the weekend, John Williams revealed in an interview that he’d be composing a theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story. The rest of the score is still being handled by John Powell. The standalone Han Solo film releases May 25.

The 32 Most Anticipated Movies of 2018

On Tuesday, Netflix released a brief teaser for A Series of Unfortunate Events season 2, starring Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf. The show returns March 30, and adapts books five to nine.

Later that day, Paramount announced that the next Cloverfield movie – which may or may not be called God Particle – has been moved back to April 20 from February. The film stars Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw among others.

On Wednesday, Netflix said that a Bright sequel is in the works, with stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton along with director David Ayer all attached. This confirms the Bloomberg report from two weeks ago.

TV: The X-Files Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny reprise their roles as FBI special agents for an eleventh year in the second year of the show’s revival era, whose rating success (despite negative critical reception) convinced Fox to greenlit a 10-episode new season. The premiere and finale will focus on the long-arc storyline, with the other episodes being standalone.

Recurring and guest stars include Annabeth Gish, Robbie Amell, Lauren Ambrose, Karin Konoval, Barbara Hershey, and Haley Joel Osment. Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) attempt to locate their son at the beginning of the series, while battling a mysterious organisation led by Erika Price (Hershey).

The X-Files season 1 has gotten average to good reviews from critics, with Vox’s Todd VanDerWerff surprised “how rejuvenated it feels”, and terming it “a damn sight better than the 2016 one”. Uproxx’s Alan Sepinwall concurred with VanDerWerff that it’s not anywhere near its season-three peak, but “it’s much better than it has any business being, particularly given what we got two years ago”.

Grown-ish In the penultimate episode of the third season of ABC’s popular African-American family sitcom Black-ish, the eldest daughter Zoey Johnson (Yar Shahidi) went off to college. Usually, audiences would just see less of her from the next season – as has become the case with the ongoing season 4 – but here, she’s gotten her own spin-off.

Stylised like the original, Grown-ish follows Zoey as she begins her freshman year at Southern California University. Joining her is Charlie Telphy (Deon Cole) – now part of Black-ish’s main cast – f and Aaron (Trevor Jackson), who has a recurring role on Black-ish. New cast members include Francia Raisa, Chris Parnell, Emily Arlook, and Jordan Buhat.

Reviews for the show’s first season – critics have seen a few episode – are mostly positive, with EW’s Dana Schwartz praising Shahidi’s chemistry with her Latina Republican roommate Ana (Raisa) and the snappy dialogue, while Variety’s Maureen Ryan called it “a smart, breezy expansion of the Black-ish family”.

Rotten Do you like true crime shows and are concerned about food production? This Netflix original documentary series is tailored especially for you then. Rotten focuses on the growing global food industry, exposing the corruption, waste and dangers of your everyday eating habits. “The food industry is under full-scale assault,” the trailer narrates. “The crisis is global.”

Episodes will look at the honey industry – a scam known as Honeygate that involved smuggling in inferior honey from China via Australia to the US – alongside the rise of severe food allergies, chicken farms, organic and unpasteurized milk, and regulation of the fishing industry. The show comes from the same production company that regularly collaborates with Anthony Bourdain.

“In a world where huge global supply-chains are increasingly intertwined and consolidated, this series starts on your dinner plate… and follows the money to the shocking consequences – intended or not – of regulation, innovation and greed,” Netflix’s official description for Rotten reads.

Movies: Fight Club We’re going to talk about Fight Club (sorry). The film that gave the world’s youth endlessly-quotable lines, that gave the generation some good values and some screwed-up ones, and that inspired foolish individuals to start their own fight clubs, completely missing the point the film – directed by David Fincher, and based on Chuck Palahniuk’s novel – was trying to make.

For the unaware, Fight Club stars Edward Norton as the unnamed protagonist and narrator, who’s disgruntled with his white-collar job. He visits support groups for terminal disease patients just to have someone to talk to. He meets Brad Pitt’s soap salesman on a flight one day, and starts a “fight club” with him, where they organise bare-knuckle boxing matches for people like them.

Fight Club was one of the most controversial films of the year in 1999, and though it received polarising reception from critics, it has gone on to become one of the greatest films of its time. Pitt’s acting, Fincher’s work, and the anti-consumerism message make it a must-watch.

L.A. Confidential Two decades on, it’s still a surprise that L.A. Confidential – a brilliantly written, powerfully acted, and gritty depiction of 1953 Los Angeles mixing police corruption and Hollywood – lost most Oscar categories it was nominated in to Titanic. (If you love Titanic, please go away.) But it did pick up two very well-deserved awards, Best Screenplay and Kim Basinger for Best Supporting Actress.

Basinger plays a call girl who looks a lot like a popular film star, and she becomes central to an investigation into a multiple murder at a coffee shop after two detectives – Bud White (Russell Crowe) and Ed Exley (Guy Pearce) – discover ties to the call girl service operator. The film also stars Kevin Spacey as a “Hollywood” detective, so whether that influences your decision to watch it given the recent revelations, is up to you.

L.A. Confidential is one of the best films of its era, with a 99 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 90 score on Metacritic. It’s dark, cynical, pessimistic and twisted, and it manages to craft compelling characters and wade into their psychology, while still being a taut crime thriller.

Fantastic Mr. Fox Wes Anderson has a new stop-motion animated feature on the way, and his previous venture – a comedy based on Roald Dahl’s children’s book about a fox who steals food from three mean and wealthy farmers – is a fantastic (pardon us) family adventure all-around. Clooney and Streep voice Mr. and Mrs. Fox, who’ve built a peaceful life for themselves after time as thieves. But after 12 years, Mr. Fox’s animal instincts pull him back into his old life as a chicken thief, which puts not just his family but the whole animal community at risk. The farmers are determined to catch him at any cost, which forces the Foxes underground.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a whole-hearted funny romp for people of all ages, full of personality, charm, wit and emotional undercurrents, and brought to life beautifully by set designers and animation directors, alongside a wonderful score by Alexandre Desplat.

Other mentions: For those who’ve seen every movie listed above, and want something more recent, there are a few choices on Blu-ray: the Tom Cruise-starrer American Made, based on the true story of a pilot who became a drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel in the 80s; Emma Stone and Steve Carrell in Battle of the Sexes, which is loosely based on the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs; and Ben Stiller in Brad’s Status, where he re-examines his life while on a college tour with his son.

If you’re on the lookout for more new TV, Showtime has a coming-of-age drama from Lena Waithe – Emmy-winner with Aziz Ansari for Master of None season 2’s “Thanksgiving” episode – called The Chi, with rapper Common as an executive producer. It’s set in the South Side of Chicago with Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) in the lead, who dreams of opening a restaurant. It starts Sunday in the US, and might be available on Hotstar in India, given the latter’s deal with CBS.

There’s also BBC One mini-series McMafia, inspired by journalist Misha Glenny’s book of the same name, which focuses on the British-raised son of a Russian mafia boss who’s trying to get away from the family business. You can watch it via BBC iPlayer.

Beyond that, given it’s the start of the month (and year), all streaming services have added tons of new content. On Netflix, you can find the third season of Jane the Virgin; the first and only season of One Punch Man, the anime about a superhero who can kill anyone with one blow and how that depresses him, and both versions of Fullmetal Alchemist, the 2003 one that was made before the manga was complete, and the 2009 edition Brotherhood that’s more faithful to the source material.

Meanwhile, Hotstar now has every single episode of The X-Files, starting from the first episode in 1993 to the latest one that came out this week (as mentioned earlier). It has also brought back The Wire – one of the greatest series of all-time – in addition to all nine seasons of 24, and all 12 seasons of Bones.
