Sasuke’s eyed slid to their corners when he heard the choked sound of Kimiko’s sob pry through her lips. He glanced at the ball that was her form, arms wrapped tightly around her knees drawn up to her chest and head tucked in between them too.

He knew she was crying as soon as she started a few minutes ago, but he pretended to focus on his book instead, assuming she would like as much privacy as could be awarded in the small living room they were sharing space in. It didn’t cross his mind that if she really wanted privacy, she would have gotten up and walked away. If she really wanted privacy, she wouldn’t have chosen to join him in the first place. Instead, her knees flopped over onto his leg.

Sasuke tensed up, turning his head in time to catch a glimpse of Kimiko’s head finding its way to his shoulder. Her arms wrapped around his arm, pulling his hand up from between them to rest on her leg as she hugged his arm tightly. Her sobs seemed to deepen and rip from her chest with more fervor the more that she hugged him.

Sasuke knew she must be in a rare raw form to cling to him so. Calmly, he closed his book and set it aside. He felt awkward, but something about it seemed natural too. His hand gripped her leg firmly, a silent message.

I’m here.

His head tilted back and rested against the wall, and he just stared out of the window, watching the trees on the other side and dreaming up all the possible scenarios that could cause her to behave this way. It was fruitless though. He couldn’t know.

He could only be present in the moment and remind himself periodically to grip her leg again, reminding her that he was in fact present, that he was still there. In mind, in body, in heart, he was there.
