i guess it’s unfair to say irene didnt change at all, she…acknowledges some things to be true and leaves the inquisition. but she essentially still operates under the same exact everything she did before in the same uniform and by the same blessing and interests. even your talk texts with her have her going like “why do some aegir here fear me Is It Because They’re Guilty Of Something I Will Punish Them If I Need To” like…no I didn’t expect someone as zealous as her to do a 360 after a week in a town and a day on a ship but you’d think she’d at least…I dunno, not say that rounding up nearly all the aegir in town and torturing/executing every single one was the necessary choice. she didn’t even need to say it was wrong, just to think on it, or think higher as the story seemed to be urging her to doing the whole time, in questioning what truly matters to her beyond an empty statement like “the glory of iberia”. or even less than that learn even slightly not to project that law and order punishment all members of a race are suspicious shit on people on some random landship.
anyway maybe im just too le moralistic but it doesn’t ring for me like in DE where I mean some people are straight up fascists who never really change and die as the way they are but the game typically wants you to acknowledge their humanity from the pov of the protag who is a cop and who is a part of the rot. and understanding each character makes the world make more sense and how…important? everyone is to this shithole dying town. i think arkn just gives is characters too much power and too much fantasy weirdness where everyone magic chainsaw killing god robots in the basement (while in DE the one time you actually fire on anyone is an extremely weighty moment in the game) and then tacks on a but they were noble because of their national ideals and because they were trying to strike a law and order balance against the terrible hellish chaos of the world and it makes characters feel very distant when they say things like The slaughter of entire groups of people is neccessary and Then I will proceed to tell you what makes a person great is dying in sacrifice for their country and each noble loss sanctifies the great mission even more I dunno dude. i dont blame anyone for not liking characters like her and I get ak generally REAAALLLLYYYY never wants to give an opinion on anything and mostly just wants to say people are trying in a lot of different ways in a very harsh world. but in trying to highlight the virtue and vice of each instances of Nations Trying the virtues it choses to extoll are insanely dissonant for me personally and then its vices are almost always acknowledged but deemed necessary in some way by all those who get to move forward or just completely unmentioned ever again in the story
#arkn#in a lot of ways i think the story just accepts that those who are like#exceptional and powerful are those who get to live#it has very little grace or consideration for ‘the rabble’ ever#and i do think it believes that the exceptional and enlightened are the ones who must lead humanity and whatever#so every life can be cast under their judgement#while DE is like i need every one of you. all of you create my existence
