It was all Bayern Munich in the first half, with the Bavarians running riot over Paris Saint-Germain’s defense and midfield for long stretches of the opening 45 minutes. That lead to two goals, both set up by James Rodriguez — an eighth-minute goal from a cross that James sent in from the left side that Bayern knocked around in the box for a few seconds before Robert Lewandowski found himself alone in a huge bubble in front of goal, and a 37th minute tally on a counter, with Rodriguez sending in this peach of a cross that Corentin Tolisso headed home with authority.

But PSG came back strong in the second half, adjusting their approach to specifically attack the things Bayern were doing to slow them down in the first half. They put more pressure on Bayern’s defense in the first 15 minutes of the second half than they had in the entire first, and for their efforts they got this crucial goal from Kylian Mbappe off an outrageous assist from Edinson Cavani in the 50th minute.

But moments after Thiago Silva limped off with a bad knock, Bayern went flying up the pitch on a counter attack against PSG’s now-shorthanded defense. Kingsley Coman left Dani Alves spinning around in his wake before crossing to an almost-untracked Tolisso, who scored with ease to put Bayern up 3-1 in the 69th minute.

That set up a chaotic end to the match, with Bayern pushing hard to get two more goals so they could win the group, and with PSG trying to do anything they could to get two goals of their own to at least level the match. There were plenty of scoring opportunities at both ends, with Bayern definitely having the better of the chances, but ultimately nothing came of them and the match ended at 3-1.

It’s not the result Bayern wanted — they needed to win by four goals to win the group — but it was an emphatic win and strong performance from the Germans, who really needed a strong showing here to truly finish exorcising their demons from their poor start to the season. Their deflating loss to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the group stage is what finally got Carlo Ancelotti fired, and now Jupp Heynckes has flipped the script with a dominant win to cap the group stage.

Three things we learned

James Rodriguez is getting back to being James Rodriguez

For a good couple of years, it was a sad thing to be a fan of James Rodriguez. He was spending most of his time at Real Madrid sulking and not playing well at all, and while the why and how of the issue was up for debate, the end result was that he wasn’t the kind of dynamic, jaw-dropping talent who won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup any more.

He got off to a slow start this season at Bayern Munich, much like the team as a whole, but he’s been playing a bit more of late and he’s rewarded Jupp Heynckes’ faith with some excellent performances. James had his best showing yet against PSG on Tuesday, with two phenomenal crosses into the box to set up both of Bayern’s first-half goals, and he stood out as their best-performing player all throughout that half. He was everywhere, creating a constant attacking menace, and even doing very well to track back and help disrupt PSG’s passing buildup — just ask Adrien Rabiot about how he feels about James after this match.

Dani Alves is starting to become a liability in high-level games

Paris Saint-Germain fans were happy to see Dani Alves sign with their team in the summer, with the venerable Brazilian fullback bringing a ton of elite experience to the side and coming off a spring with Juventus where he’d enjoyed incredible form. But despite a few bright moments early in the season, Alves’ performances have not met expectations. In fact, he’s starting to become something of an Achilles’ heel for PSG’s defense.

At 34 years old, Alves doesn’t have the speed he used to, either in terms of his pure running pace or in how quickly he reacts to situations in front of him. That was on display in a big way in this match, with Alves’ poor defending involved in all three of Bayern’s goals, first getting beat cleanly by James Rodriguez, then not closing James down despite the Colombian not having a supporting runner to force Alves to play more conservatively. Bayern’s third goal really showed Alves’ overall lack of speed, though, turning at a glacial pace to respond to Kingsley Coman’s counter-attacking run, then getting absolutely torched by the young Frenchman.

Unfortunately for PSG, their only other option at right back at the moment is Thomas Neunier, who hasn’t played well for them either. They need a better solution on the right going forward, because right now all they have there is problems.

Joshua Kimmich and Corentin Tolisso shut Neymar down

One thing was notably quiet for Paris Saint-Germain in the first half — aside from one bad miss of a scoring opportunity, Neymar was kept almost completely out of the match. That was largely because of the efforts of Joshua Kimmich and Corentin Tolisso, who played some absolutely brilliant defense against the Brazilian megastar to keep him in check.

As Bayern’s right back, Kimmich was the man with the most responsibility against Neymar, but Heynckes put together a tactical plan that saw Tolisso regularly harry Neymar on his way up the pitch from midfield, then Kimmich closed him down and forced him wide. Even when Neymar was able to come inside, it was never on the path that he wanted, and he always had Kimmich in between him and whoever he wanted to link with. It was an impressive performance from the young duo, and a very effective bit of gameplanning to keep one of the most dangerous attackers in Europe quiet.

I have spent the majority of the week with doing preparation for the new trailer. I'm trying something new, in the film industry you usually do this thing called a ripomatic, which is a fake trailer which takes music and clips from other sources. They show this to the film distributors and producers to get greenlit, but it rarely gets outside of that setting, mostly because it's not really fair use. Since as I've said it's not really common to share I've censored the screenshot below, so mysterious, right? But I'm confident that the visuals that we will replace it with will look neat, you'll find out soon enough! ;)

I have been working on generating stories this week. The task has been bigger than expected, resulted in not being fully completed yet. I started off this week by transfering texts for different stories to the Unity project. Generating the texts was pretty straightforward. The difficult part has been giving tools for non-programmers to change the story generation. Localization has also been in mind meaning that the stories has to be told in multiple languages.

The current solution for generating the texts in different languages has been to use Unity's ScriptableObject for storing texts. Because human languages can vary a lot in structure, sentences in the generated story is built like formatted strings with numbers that gets replaced in code, for example "{0} effort but it wasn't {1} this time" where "{0}" and "{1}" get replaced by specific random words. For more complex words, like the name of a city or a follower in-game, the numbers in a formatted string are replaced by specific keys. These keys is then recognized in code and adds its corresponding value, like the last name of a city that survived in the game or the animal that ate the last follower...

This is only the surface of the story builder and I am working hard to get it to work properly. We feel like this feature is gonna be an interesting part of Crest!

A lot of progress was made with the expertise buildings and resource notifications. The buildings now use a better algorithm for placement around the city. They also make use of the new floating notifications to show when an expertise level has been increased.

Otherwise the notifications will be seen for followers that are either spending resources (such as building materials for constructions), or gaining resources (mining, farming, etc.).

I have made several changes to the word discovery feature. Words now have individual progression rates, which makes some words easier to discover than others. These rates are randomized when a new game is started. There will be a discovery balloon that pops up above followers heads when they progress the discovery of a word. The balloon is finished except for the implementation of new graphics for it. I have also made Warrior followers stronger against animals, giving the Destroy animal actions a buff. Previously, Destroy animals (Warrior follower) was the exact same action as Consume animals (Hunting follower) except that you get no food from Destroying animals, but you do from Hunting them.

In the beginning of the week I started writing the messages that I wanted in the tutorial but it proved to be tedious work and not very inspiring because I couldn't picture how it would be in game. I talked to Emma and came up with a much better way for me at least. I took screenshots and edited in information to see the flow and how I could fit the text in these smaller bubbles. "What is the most vital points that the player needs in order to play our game?" was the focus for the text. For the remainder of the week I made 60 images about all that is in the tutorial right now, not counting most of the new features. I thought I was done, but then Martin gave me a link to a gamasutra article and it made me rethink some of my decisions, which is where I am at now, changing the texts and some of the features I thought the tutorial needed but maybe it doesn't. I can't wait for the new tutorial to be implemented in the game and tested!

I have also been playing the game a lot in order to get a better grasp of where we need to focus our energy in the continued development of Crest.

So, Can We Use CSS Variables Yet?

With all the talk lately of finally being able to use CSS Grid, it got me thinking: What other amazing CSS features can I use now? CSS Variables was the one that instantly sprung to mind.

It’s been a while since I’ve heard anything about CSS Variables and it adds a whole new toolset and way of thinking to front end development that excites me.

A Refresher on CSS Variables

CSS Variables have been knocking around for a few years now but don’t seem to be in wide usage. With the popularity of pre-processors such as Sass, frontend developers scratched that variable itch a long time ago.

I was first excited by CSS Variables in around 2014 and since then they’ve dipped in and out of my interest sphere. I’m only now considering getting them into production sites and I’m going to show you how simple and easy they are to use.

Declaring the Variable

Declaring the custom property is simple: We need only create the property we want and append two dashes to the beginning of it. These can be declared anywhere but adding them to :root seems to be a good approach at the moment.

--my-reusable-value: 20px;

Accessing the Variable

Using the property is pretty simple as well. We access it through the var() function and use the property we declared above.

padding: var(—my-reusable-value);

Isn’t that simple and glorious?

CSS Variables are straightforward to use and pretty easy to remember. The biggest challenge with CSS Variables (as with most CSS) is knowing the right time and place to use them. Throwing them in haphazardly is a sure fire way to create a mess of a stylesheet and with these variables thrown in debugging will probably become more difficult.

Proper use cases and strategies for using them should be considered and this is where the majority of your effort should be focused.

An Interesting Use Case : Responsive Modules

In the following example I’m going to show you a basic example of how I currently build a responsive component using Sass variables. Then I will show you how it could be improved upon with CSS Variables in a way that’s not possible with a pre-processor. This is a specific use case which does not apply to every way variables are used but is to show how CSS Variables can be used differently.

When using Sass there are a few different methodologies I’ve tried. My current go to version is placing media queries within the CSS blocks I want to change. In here I can use a variable, standard CSS, mixin or an extend to modify this element without scattering the styles for the component everywhere.

One problem with this is having multiple media queries and lots of variables which are kind of related but not. I could use maps for the variables which would give more organisation but I think the main issue is that we’re using a multiple variables to define one property. This just feels wrong.

Sass variables are used ahead of time which means we have to plan every way we’re going to use them. They make developing easier but technically don’t provide us with any new superpowers.

CSS Variables to the Rescue

CSS Variables do not need to be declared up front, they are dynamic. This is useful in a very different way. We can now conditionally change variables from anywhere and in specific contexts such as media queries.

By serving our media query styles right up from we can reduce the amount of media queries scattered around for responsive styling. It also gives a really nice and clean way to see general spacing and typography styling across different formats.

I think responsive designs and theming are two excellent use cases for CSS Variables but there are so many possibilities.

How Are CSS Variables Different From SASS Variables?

Sass Variables and CSS Variables are two different beasts, each with their own pro’s and con’s.

Sass Variables Can Be Organised Better

Due to the popularity of Sass and the more programmatical nature of Sass, more in depth organisation patterns have evolved over time. I particularly like sass maps and combining similar type variables into the maps. Colors, sizes and shortcuts for paths seem to be popular choices for including in maps.

Because of the relatively smaller usage of CSS Variables the best practices have yet to evolve. Maps and arrays are not possible in the same way in CSS so these new organisational patterns will have to innovative and solve the problems in a different way to Sass.

CSS Variables Can Be Dynamically Changed

CSS Variables are handled dynamically by the browser at runtime whereas Sass Variables are used when the CSS is compiled.

This is the core selling point of CSS Variables for me. It will be interesting to see how people use this feature over time and whether it will live up to its potential.

CSS Variables Are a Standard Browser Feature

I’m personally of the opinion that the more things we can remove from Webpack, Gulp, and whatever-new-framework-is-out-now, the better. Having interesting new browser features means we don’t have to rely on compilation and JavaScript frameworks to do things developers feel are essential. I would hazard a guess that a high percentage of frontend developers use variables in their CSS in one way or another, so everyone using this a core feature seems like a sensible thing to do. It means one less thing in the build step (which I think we can all agree is getting pretty immense these days) and more consistency across the web.

What Is The Support Looking Like?

The support is looking remarkable good with one glaring exception: IE 11. Most modern browsers support CSS Variables with Edge having a few bugs.

At 78.11% this is higher than CSS Grid (at the time of writing) but that IE11 support could be a problem.

So, Can We Use CSS Variables Yet?

I think the time is now. That IE11 support is not going to get any better, and we know from previous versions of Windows that it takes a long time for some people to upgrade. But the support across modern browsers is great which means we should be looking to CSS Variables and experimenting with the possibilities.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t forget about our responsibility to older browser support though. A basic fallback system using a supports tag, or even a polyfill, for older browsers should be considered, even more so if your actual site usage is a lot more skewed to older browsers.

It’s an exciting time for front end development, and I for one can’t wait to be using more of these technologies in my production sites.
